The Gibert Marine shipyard: from the renown of Gib’Sea sailboats to acquisition by the Dufour Group

Gibert Marine was founded in 1972 in Marans, Charente-Maritime. Initially, the yard specialized in building sport keelboats such as the Téquila. Later, the company broadened its expertise to cruising and racing boats.

Gibert Marine specializes in the production of boats in the Gib’Sea line. These cruising-oriented models feature comfortable interiors and high-quality fiberglass hulls. The brand’s reputation and renown is such that its name is often associated with that of the shipyard itself.

In 1996, the Dufour Group acquired the Gibert Marine shipyard and its emblematic Gib’Sea brand. The group decided to retain the name of the famous Gib’Sea range.

In the years following the acquisition of the Gibert Marine shipyard, only a few Gib’Sea yachts were built each year, in response to demand from loyal Gib’Sea enthusiasts. These included the 10-meter Gib’Sea 33 and the 12-meter Gib’Sea 42 . For a temporary period, these models were also mass-produced to meet greater demand.

Today, Gib’Sea continues to epitomize excellence and reputation in the racing-cruising field.

Swiftsure Yachts

The Gib’Sea 126, Rendezvous , is a spacious 44-foot cruising yacht, renowned for its design quality and robustness. Graceful under sail, comfortable and easy to handle, the design was awarded a “Cruising Sailboat of the Year” award when it was introduced. Rendezvous was built in France by Gilbert Marine, which was bought in 1997 by DuFour Yachts. It was designed by Oliver Poncin with offshore sailing in mind.

This yacht is perfect for sailing on the strong winds of San Francisco Bay, her current home port, or overnights on the coast, and especially for long distance blue water cruising. There are two queen quarter berths aft and two sets of sea bunks forward, providing sleeping berths for 8, without even using the settees. This is the perfect yacht for inviting friends or even two families to stay on board over a long weekend, or a longer voyage.

Accommodations

The Gib’Sea 126 has ample cabin room for fun for all. Upon entering the companion way you will see the large navigation station to port and the open galley to starboard. The salon has two fixed tables on either side, providing plenty of room for entertaining. Large salon windows fill the living areas with natural light. There are plenty of handholds to make passages easy and safer when the seas kick up or you are heeling over. The navigation station has a large desk with hinged lid, with substantial storage room underneath and outboard. In addition to the electrical panels the nav station has the VHF radio, SSB radio, and stereo controls, as well as a Garmin GPS and radar display.

The salon has a large dining table on starboard and a smaller breakfast table on port. The port table can be lowered to the level of the settee, turning it into a generous sea berth. Behind the settees are fixed ports high and low, open shelf, and enclosed storage cabinets.

Forward of the salon are two cabins with double bunks each, sharing a Jack-and-Jill wash stand forward. The forward cabins can be individually closed off from the salon and each other. Each cabin has a large hanging locker. All four bunks have lee cloths; the upper bunks have access to individual storage compartments. The wash area has a medicine cabinet, mirror, and opening overhead hatch. These cabins are perfect for kids or crew while allowing the main cabins privacy in the stern.

Rendezvous is equipped with a large L-shaped galley to starboard of the companionway and open to the salon. There is plenty of counter space for entertaining and preparing food. Starting inboard there is a generous wide counter, with voluminous storage beneath, including up to three wire baskets for stores. Moving further outboard is a double sink with additional storage underneath. On the outboard side are the two burner Eno gimbaled stove and oven. Outboard of the stove there is a large icebox. Finally aft of the stove is additional counter surface and the top-opening refrigerator. Above the stove and icebox are two double door cabinets.

History of Gib'Sea Yachts

Founded in France in 1972, Gibert Marine produced sailing yachts primarily for long-distance racing. The success of the Gib'sea brand led to its separation as a new brand. However, in 1996, the company was bought out by Dufour, resulting in a suspension of Gib'sea sailboat production.

It wasn't until 1999 that construction resumed. Sadly, today the production of boats under the Gib'sea brand has completely stopped. The company's production facilities were based in Maran, and renowned French naval architects Michel Joubert and Bernard Nivelt contributed to their projects.

Despite their discontinuation, Gib'sea sailboats have made a significant impact in the history of long-distance racing, with sailors still willing to purchase them today.

Review of Gib'Sea 76

Basic specs..

The Gib'Sea 76 has been built with more than one type of keel. One option is a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.55 - 1.65 meter (5.09 - 5.39 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Gib'Sea 76 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta 2001 diesel engine at 9.0 hp (6 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.6 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenence than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 20 liters (5 US gallons, 4 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Gib'Sea 76 is 2.18, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Gib'Sea 76 is about 126 kg/cm, alternatively 705 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 126 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 705 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.75

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 22m 2 (236 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Gib'sea 96

Gib'sea 96 is a 33 ′ 2 ″ / 10.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Joubert-Nivelt and built by Gib'sea/Gibert Marine between 1984 and 1987.

Drawing of Gib'sea 96

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
