Ecume DE Mer

Ecume DE Mer is a 25 ′ 11 ″ / 7.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Jean Marie Finot (Groupe Finot) and built by New Japan Yacht Co. Ltd. and Chantier Mallard between 1968 and 1979.

Drawing of Ecume DE Mer

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Ecume de Mer – An Ideal Budget Sailboat for Sailing Adriatic

by Boroot · Published July 30, 2023 · Updated January 31, 2024

Ecume de Mer, translating to “Sea Foam” in French, is a sailboat from the early 1970s known as a swift, comfortable, and resilient vessel. Hailing from the classic designs of the early ’70s, it has withstood the test of time. This compact but robust vessel, measuring 26 feet (8 meters) in length, continues to captivate sailors with its sheer performance and elegance. But what makes it a top choice today after 50 years for couples seeking a budget-friendly, week-long cruising experience on the Adriatic Sea? Let’s dive in to explore.

A Brief Overview

Ecume de Mer, designed by Jean Marie Finot and introduced by the French shipyard Mallard, was a sensation when it first hit the seas. Its production ran from 1969 to 1980, with a remarkable fleet of over 1300 boats produced during this period. Its fibreglass monohull design offers durability, making it reliable for cruising journeys. Ecume de Mer’s shallow draft of 1,5m allows for exploring smaller, less accessible harbours and anchorages that larger yachts simply can’t reach. This makes for a more adventurous and unique cruising experience, full of hidden gems and less crowded spots.

Accommodation and Interior Design

Ecume de Mer is cleverly designed to maximize space and comfort despite its relatively small size. The vessel offers accommodation for four people, perfectly catering to a couple seeking additional room or planning to bring along friends. The boat contains a V-shaped double berth forward, two berths in the main cabin, a head to the starboard, and a small galley to the port. It’s a compact setup yet offers everything needed for a comfortable sailing experience. The bright and airy interior ambience, with a touch of vintage charm, adds to the overall appeal, promising a unique experience for couples. Ecume de Mer offers a certain simplicity and intimacy that larger boats often lack.

Performance and Usability

When it comes to performance, the Ecume de Mer is impressive for its size. Its strong sailing characteristics make it a great performer under various wind conditions. It easily cuts through the water and holds its own against larger cruising vessels. It’s stable and agile, making it perfect for a couple to manage, even with limited sailing experience. The smaller size of the boat also allows for easier manoeuvring in the diverse range of weather conditions that the Adriatic can present.

Cost-Effectiveness

One of the most appealing features of the Ecume de Mer sailboat is its cost-effectiveness. Given its age and size, it’s often more affordable to rent compared to newer or larger yachts. This makes it an ideal choice for couples on a shorter budget seeking an Adriatic cruise experience.

The Adriatic Cruise Experience

Cruising the Adriatic on an Ecume de Mer offers couples a unique, romantic experience. The Adriatic’s calm waters and stunning coastline, dotted with picturesque towns and idyllic islands, make it a perfect cruising destination. Whether dropping anchor in a secluded bay for a quiet swim, exploring Dalmatian towns’ rich history and culture, or sampling local cuisine at waterfront restaurants, the possibilities are endless. Its versatile design, shallow draft and cost-effectiveness make it a perfect vessel to enjoy all the Adriatic offers.

In conclusion, the Ecume de Mer sailboat embodies an affordable, compact, yet capable sailing experience. It’s an ideal choice for couples aiming for a budget-friendly, week-long Adriatic cruise, promising comfort, adventure, and romance all rolled into one.

My next project is to race the Mini Transat, a race across the Atlantic single-handed on a one-design fleet.

The Mini 6.50 class is an incubator for innovation. Most of the technology and design concepts you find today in the IMOCA class have first been tested (and crash-tested) on a mini.

I chose to go for a scow, more powerful and stable downwind, the Maxi 650, from IDB marine, see more specs  here.

Can’t wait to get on the water with this new toy to see what it can give. Until then, have a look at the surfs these tiny offshore beasts are capable of.

Jean marie finot's "ecume de mer".

ecume de mer yacht

As a sailing instructor at the Iles de Gl é nan school - “ the only place in France you could really learn to sail, at the time ” according to Finot - he got to know Philippe Harl é , the chief instructor, who was leaving to set up a yacht design practice. Jean-Marie, too. wanted to learn about yacht design, so he took a lowly position as Harl é 's assistant in order to pick up some experience.

The apprentice Finot did actually design a couple of boats for the Harl é practice, but as a recently married man he wanted a career that would support a family, so he gave up his yacht design ambitions and left Harl é . However, as a favour to a friend, he agreed to design one last boat, Ecume De Mer , a small cruiser/racer of which it was intended only two would ever be built – one for the friend and one for Jean-Marie himself. This would be, he decided, his last design.

The pair looked around for a French yard to build the hard-chine plywood boats, but none seemed interested. Finally a Dutch builder, Walter Huisman, heard of their project and, impressed by the young designer, offered to build one boat at a reasonable price, provided they would campaign it in a number of races, including the International Quarter Ton Cup competition. Although this entailed modifying the plans to create a slightly larger boat, agreement was reached.

ecume de mer yacht

The following season, back in France the prototype boat won race after race, and even returned briefly to Holland to win the Delta race again. Soon this phenomenon caught the attention of the French boatbuilder, Mallard, who contracted to build a series of boats to the design, in GRP. Once again the drawings were modified. Away went the chines to be replaced by a rounded hull shape. The stepped sheerline and flush deck were replaced by a conventional sheer and a short coachroof. Though the efficient racing deck layout was retained, with halyards and controls led aft to the cockpit, on the inside the accomodation was re-designed for comfort in harbour rather than racing. There would now be standing headroom, a dinette, a toilet, and a separate forecabin.

ecume de mer yacht

Further modifications were made to re-style accommodation and coachroof, giving more headroom in the heads in 1975. This version won the 1977 Boat of the Year title and was chosen for the 1978 "Tour De France" race . It continued in production until 1980.

Eventually 1385 boats were built to the Ecume De Mer design. Examples of this fine boat, that was supposed to be Finot's farewell to yacht design and of which there should only ever have been two, can still be seen in almost any marina in France as well as in many other parts of the world. This great boat - that launched a lasting career for its designer - has itself lasted pretty well.

At the time responsible for the boats maintenance at the famous Les Glenans sailing school, and freshly graduated in Architecture,  Jean-Marie Finot designs the Ecume de Mer for his own usage. The prototype is built in aluminum by Huisman in the Nederlands. In 1969, the Mallard shipyard begin producing it in series and in composite materials.

It is a resounding success : 1385 units will be built until 1980.The Ecume de Mer wins the Quarter Ton Cup in 1970 and 1972. It receives the first ever french "Boat of the Year" award in 1975.
