“The first Flexplorer is a game changer, there is no doubt bout it. It is actually already a trend-setter project if we look at many of the latest renderings published by other yards on the press after we presented the project. This makes us very proud, indeed,” says Vasco Buonpensiere, co-founder and Sales & Marketing Director at CdM. “Being the first interpreters of a new trend and being those who lead the pack, launching this kind of yacht years before our competitors… well, it is just priceless and a perfect reward for all the efforts we did to create the Flexplorer range of vessels!”

Being at the forefront of innovation and setting new benchmark in the explorer yachts segment is in CdM’s DNA. When CdM started its activity, explorer vessels were almost unknown to most yacht owners and neglected by most shipyards. Nowadays explorer or expedition vessels represent one of the most interesting class in the yachting market and many shipyards are proposing explorer-like yachts. We can safely say that CdM set a trend and still master the explorer vessel segment.

Recently CdM is moving forward with one-off projects and new series among which the Flexplorer line represents a highlight as well as a turning point. The embrace of both design and technological advancements and deeply held commitment to move forward define what a CdM’s explorer vessel is today. Flexplorer is a testament to these values.

Aurelia’s main features

The Flexplorer line embodies all features of a pure explorer vessel, robustness, seaworthiness and comfort in all sea conditions adding to these qualities an extra dose of flexibility and functionality. The Flexplorer encompasses CdM’s superlative levels in both construction and equipment.

The first yacht in the Flexplorer line, Aurelia, is indeed a stunning piece of technology wrapped in an elegant design by Sergio Cutolo/Hydro Tec with groundbreaking interiors by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Her eye-catching superstructure, almost vertical bow, huge aft deck are not styling exercises as they provide the yacht with features that make her a perfect ocean-going vessel designed to face all sort of weather conditions in total safety and comfort. She has an asymmetrical layout on  the Main deck. The starboard side of the salon encompasses the side passage on starboard side becoming larger and benefiting from open views onto the sea through large side windows. Her bold hull boasts a custom Star Green livery by Alexseal Yacht Coatings.

Aurelia’s distinguished features

Among Aurelia’s genuinely unique aspects it is worth mentioning the carbon fiber, 3.5t A-frame crane that is perfectly encompassed in the deck’s flooring. This feature itself is a remarkable piece of engineering purposely developed by CdM’s in collaboration with AMS (Advanced Mechanical Solutions) to provide the yacht with a powerful crane to launch an 8.5m tender – a Jokerboat Clubman 28 EFB – without interfering with full use of deck space. It goes without saying that the A-frame crane also allows much safer loading and offloading operations and it eliminates inclining issues.

The fact that the tender is loaded and offloaded in the protected water at the stern of the vessel is another plus, indeed. The second tender is a William Dieseljet 445. Another remarkable feature are the bulwarks that are collapsible on both sides for around 7 metres to increase the deck space astern. Once the bulwarks are folded down it becomes a beach area of more than 115 square metres. There are many storage spaces on board for both food and toys to allow long permanence onboard and non-stop passages to remote destinations.

On the stern terrace, to port side, there is a stainlesssteel drainable storage space to host boards and other  toys, different slots for a carbon fiber removable 500kg crane, and a very big lazzarette are only a few of the features which make the Flexplorer a perfect vessel for those who like to stay active when cruising. The list of toys includes 3 mountain bikes, two sea-bobs and a few surf boards.

Naval architecture, equipment, etc. Aurelia is a displacement yacht with a bulbous bow. Her hull is deep and flared in its forward sections to keep the deck dry in all weather conditions, even the worst, while they flatten and enlarge astern to allow large diameter propellers. “The transverse frame, in line with the shipyard approach, allows for better spaces optimization, increasing the internal volume thanks to reduced internal structures,” says Sergio Cutolo. “It also provides additional design flexibility, allowing for easier modifications/ customisation. She has two pairs of electro-driven stabilizing fins. This solution grants better functionality also because, thanks to a sophisticated software, they work together with the two independent electro-driven rudders to improve the seakeeping. This allowed the installation of smaller machines and blades, minimizing the ‘rudder effect’ caused by larger fins while offering redundancy in case of blade failure.” A gallery/tank deck runs below the guest area to connect the engine room to the crew area. This technical space also allows easy access to equipment and tanks.

Thanks to the hull’s large volume, easily accessible storage compartments and freezers are located below the crew area. An interview to Sergio Cutolo, founder of Hydro Tec, who designed Aurelia’s bold exterior lines and developed her super-efficient naval architecture (not to mention her state-of-the-art engineering) CDM You designed the exterior line of Aurelia as well as all Flexplorers. Spaces on board Aurelia, 39.37 metres, are actually huge for a yacht of this size and the layout is extremely functional with plenty of space for storages, too. How did you succeed in combining an exterior that is not aesthetically heavy or voluminous with such roomy interiors?

SC From a structural point of view, we have tried to minimise the impact of the structures on the hull and superstructures to maximise interior spaces. In the superstructure we have managed to create the perfect match between the designed internal layout and the positioning/size of the windows. The transverse frame, in line with the shipyard approach, allows for better spaces optimization, increasing the internal volume also thanks to the structural arrangement that requires limited space for internal structures.

The hybrid structural arrangement, main longitudinal structures and transversal frames at 500 mm, also provides additional design flexibility, allowing for easier modications/ customisation. A gallery/tank deck runs below the guest area to connect the engine room to the crew area. This technical space also allows easy access to equipment and tanks. Thanks to the hull’s large volume, easily accessible storage compartments and freezers are located below the crew area.

CDM How you developed her naval architecture?

SC The hull was preliminarily optimised using CFD analysis with particular attention to avoid any kind of interference between the various appendages (rudders, stabilizers, thruster, exhaust scoops, etc). Once the CFD analysis has been completed, the hull has been tank tested at MARIN Institute in Holland.

The naval architectural aspects were influenced by the peculiar weight distribution and the profile of the bow which was designed according to the specific aesthetic needs of the owner. Hull lines were designed to improve efficiency and to match the weight distribution as well as interior space requirements.

CDM On the occasion of sea trials – in all weather conditions – she proved to be even more efficient than expected. Would you please tell us what makes her so efficient?

SC I’ll make a list of the key characteristics: Her hull is a typical fast displacement round bilge hull, with a bulbous bow and deep and flared in its forward sections to keep the deck dry in all weather conditions, even the worst, and to allow for optimal space for the crew area and for the Owner Suite. The hull has a generous  arc and flat sections at the stern. The Beam/Draught ratio has been brought to an optimal value and special arrangements have been made to allow high diameter/ high efficiency propellers. Towards the transom, transversal sections flatten and enlarge astern to allow large diameter propellers without affecting the draught and huge space for beach club and swim platform.

Aurelia has two pairs of electro-driven stabilizing fins. This solution, which is not common on vessels of this size, has multiple beneficial effects. First, the four fins arrangement grants, by definition, for better course keeping because they cancel completely the steering effect caused by aft fins. In addition to that, Aurelia was designed also with independent electrically driven rudders that, thanks to a sophisticated software, work together with the four stabilizers furtherly improving coursekeeping and, consequently, seakeeping itself.

CDM What are the main benefits of having four fins? SC Compared to two-fins installations, the fourfins installation allow for the installation of smaller machines and blades, offering redundancy in case of blade failure. In practice the experience showed that, during normal operation, the contribution of the aft fins to stabilization is about one third compared to the forward ones, so they be kept almost centered reducing any possibility of turbulence to the propellers. At anchor, the four fins work in synchrony to provide optimal stabilization.

CDM As said at the beginning, Aurelia behaviour during the tough sea trials exceeded your expectations …

SC Yes, indeed! Data from sea trials were excellent in all regards: the maximum speed has been more than 15 knots, exceeding by more than one knot the contract specifications. Also range calculations showed an incredible 7.000 nautical miles range at 10 knots, much higher than the contractual values, due to the extremely low fuel consumption which is about 70 l/h at a speed of about 10 knots. This amazing achievement is the result of the hull optimization combined with the perfect integration between the hull itself and the propulsion package (engines, gearboxes, propellers).

Unprecedented design solutions Francesco Paszkowski on the interior decoration of Aurelia Aurelia’s interior decoration – highly personal and extremely original – is the work of the Florentine designer Francesco Paszkowski in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. It is like nothing else ever seen aboard a yacht.

“The brief for Aurelia was to create a peculiar interior. It had to reflect the owner’s personality,” says Paszkowski. “He doesn’t like a boat interior furnished with famous brand furniture, he likes objects and furniture which have a special feeling and vibe, which tell a story and have a flavour.”

Brown and charcoal grey hues and an industrial style are the red thread throughout the yacht. Brushed oak floorboards underfoot are cut to different widths to give an irregular, repurposed look. Panels of plywood bearing a thin coat of concrete butt up to steel girders overhead. There is concrete on the walls and ceilings – a thin coat of concrete on panels of plywood – as well as steel framed-furniture and shelves, and sofas upholstered in vintage leather. Antique Persian rugs add warmth to the atmosphere. The wiring for the lights on the boat is carried through brass piping fixed in plain sight to ceilings and bulkheads, even the light switches are old-fashioned industrial boxes that stand proud on every wall.

“A feature that is likely to win over even the hardest-hearted of modernists is the wine cellar,” says Paszkowski. It spans two decks – Main and Upper deck – and is meant to be a remarkable design feature as it occupies the entire stairwell. It is composed by two separated wine cellars accessible from the main and upper deck. Each rack (a sort of square column) rotates on a swivel base. The racks rotate manually to give access to all bottles. They contain 44 bottles each. It has been designed by CdM in conjunction with Romagnoli Inox. “We are very proud of the iron staircase with the steps covered with leather surrounding the wine cellar,” adds Paszkowski. “We like it, as it fits with the industrial vibe, but the leather gives a special sensation under your feet.”

Every major item of furniture has been rescued from a previous life, or at least inspired by a vintage piece: daybeds and benches resemble old wool mattresses, recreated in precious Ralph Lauren fabrics; there is a lamp whose mantle once adorned an airfield as a landing light, discovered in a flea market in Florence; the model of a Spitfire and a few exquisite pieces of art and paintings hanging on the walls.

“This design gave us the opportunity to explore unprecedented design solutions on board.” AMS developed – in conjunction with CDM’s Technical Department – the project of the A-frame crane.

CDM AMS designs and produces cranes, too, and the A-frame installed on the Flexplorer Aurelia is a very peculiar one. What are its main characteristics?

AMS Throughout the years we have produced a lot of cranes and tender launching systems tailored according to the space available on board, the lifting capacity required and the handling needs of the vessel, yet I have to say that the A-frame crane represented a first and a true challenge. With the A-frame crane, Ennio Cecchini and the CDM’s team really had a stroke of genius! We embraced the idea with enthusiasm and worked with the CDM team shoulder to shoulder to bring the project to completion. A-frame cranes are usually designed to perform offshore load handling on ships, fishing and research vessels, Aurelia’s A-frame crane is the first crane of this kind ever used on a luxury yacht.

Cantiere delle Marche introduces Flexplorer 130 Aurelia

It is composed by two pillars and a transverse cylindrical element that encompass and holds the winch that has to be free to rotate to remain always in perpendicular position (that is aligned with the gravity force) while the frame rotates. The main dimensions of the frame are (B x H) 4.2m x 10.1m, the structural carbon weight is 460kg and the total weight is 1150kg. The lifting capacity is above 3 tons. The two pillars have been laminated in two pieces each and then bonded together, and secondary bonded with the top transverse cylindrical element.

The whole structure, when not in use, is recessed into the deck floor and hidden underneath flush deck flaps. We designed the automatically-operated flaps, too. The A-frame crane must operate smoothly in all positions and the structure, while moving from ‘rest’ position to launching position undergoes critical stresses. The first critical position occurs when the structure starts rising from the deck and, due to the very narrow angle, the weight force on the actuators is at its maximum.

Moreover, the actuators must work in perfect synchrony to make the structure operate without any torsion or misalignment. Another critical position is reached when the structure reaches an obtuse angle to let the tender hang beyond the stern to be launched or hauled.

CDM What about your relationship with CDM?

AMS We’ve been working with CDM for many years on a great number of projects. We have built stern doors, hatches, handling systems, cranes, foldable bulwarks for CDM explorer yachts of the Darwin Class, Nauta Air and Acciaio series and for custom projects such as Audace and Crowbridge. We are developing a new, larger A-frame crane for the Flexplorer 146. Our relationship with CDM is excellent under all aspects and when we work on a project we join forces and really become an unique team.

Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has really flexed its design muscles with its latest 130-foot vessel. The Italian yard has just launched a new “ Flexplorer ,” which fuses superyacht standards of space and design with the rugged, go-anywhere capabilities of an explorer vessel.

The inaugural model, known as Aurelia , hit the water over the weekend, with the momentous occasion captured by CdM in a YouTube video (above). “The first Flexplorer will be a game-changer, there is no doubt about it,” Vasco Buonpensiere, co-founder and sales and marketing director at CdM, said in a press release .

Designed by Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec, Aurelia sports a near-vertical bow, a deep, flared displacement hull, and an eye-catching superstructure. She was built using a combination of steel and aluminum with the goal of faring all sorts of weather conditions in total safety and comfort.

Aurelia Flexplorer

  • Cantiere delle Marche

One of Aurelia ’s biggest drawcards is her versatile aft deck. It features collapsible bulwarks that fold out to create a picturesque “infinity deck” of more than 1,200 square feet. The deck is also equipped with a remarkable A-frame crane that can launch a 28-foot tender weighing roughly 7,700 pounds. When not in use, the crane is perfectly integrated into the deck’s flooring to prevent it from creating an eyesore.

Aurelia ’s interiors were penned by Francesco Paszkowski Design and are reminiscent of a sophisticated New York loft. Think brushed oak flooring, combined with slate, concrete, glass, iron and aluminum. It’s industrial yet still plenty cozy. Her spacious layout allows for up to nine guests and includes a well-appointed master suite on the main deck, as well as two VIPs and two twins on the lower deck. There are also three crew cabins to accommodate six crew. (More photos of interiors will be available soon.)

To ensure that globetrotters can explore in comfort, Aurelia features all must-have luxury amenities, from an overflowing toy garage to a fully equipped gym. She even has a two-story wine cellar that occupies the entire stairwell on the main and upper decks.

Aurelia Flexplorer

Aurelia gets her grunt from a pair of heavy-duty Caterpillar C32 engines (1600-1800 rpm), which give her a top speed of 14 knots. She has an impressive range in excess of 5,000 nautical miles when traveling at a cruising speed of 10 knots. The vessel is also fitted with electro-driven stabilizing fins for smoother sailing.  Flexplorer, indeed.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

Flexplorer 130 Aurelia by Cantiere delle Marche

Superyacht 71-Autumn 2021

“Aurelia” is the first of CDM’s Flexplorer range which as the name suggests represents an evolution from the explorer yacht concept designed to offer total flexibility.

This explorer yacht’s ever expanding segment is led by CDM that is currently offering an ample heterogeneous range which starts with the more classic Darwin Class in steel to the more modern Nauta Air as well as a series of One Offs like the fascinating “Audace” and “Crowbridge” and the most recent RJ Class and Flexplorer yachts. This latest product has been launched with the launching of the 130’ “Aurelia” designed by the yard with precious input from Sergio Cutolo’s Hydro Tec and Francesco Paszkowski’s Design.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

“The first Flexplorer is undoubtedly a turning point. In actual fact despite the notable success judging by the latest renderings of other competitors we’re way ahead and this makes us very proud” said Vasco Buon Pensiere, co- founder and Sales & Marketing CdM shipyard Director. “The first to interpret a new tendency and the first to have launched the project design work years ahead represents a perfect return for all the efforts we’ve put into creating the Flexplorer range”.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

The reason for this pride is found in the yacht’s features beginning with typical CdM navette thanks to Sergio Cutolo’s experience flanked by his Hydro Tec Studio which has delivered design work, as well as a functional asymmetric layout. “Flexplorer is the perfect example of how the same contents can possibly be expressed in diverse forms: with CdM we have completely revolutionized the Explorer yacht concept to obtain a synthesis which encompassed this typology’s core features, coupling them with centuries of naval tradition and creating a new shape and a flexible model which well adapts to being made to satisfy each and every client”. said Sergio Cutolo.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

Sergio Cutolo said: “The Flexplorer is the perfect example of how the same content can be expressed in different shapes. In CdM’s case we have totally revolutionized the concept of Explorer vessel to get to a synthesis which encompassed this typology’s core characteristics where optimising spaces along a transversal frame increases interior volume thanks to the reduction of the structure”. Furthermore this solution enhances greater flexibility in the design work which translates into simpler, less laborious modification according to different clients’ wishes.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

Aurelia is equipped with twin pairs of electrically operated stabiliser fins. This solution guarantees greater efficiency also thanks to integrated sophisticated software acting on both independent electric rudder blades upgrading sea keeping performance. All of this resulted in installing smaller electric engines and smaller fins minimising what we know as ‘rudder effect’ which is normally brought about by larger fins which would substitute the preceding ones in case of partial failure”.

Beyond a yacht’s technical aspects there are several important aspects concerning the interiors for which Francesco Paskowski’s studio delivered useful input and know-how. “Drawing up Aurelia’s interiors has been very stimulating involving CdM’s whole design team as well as the owner and Margherita Casprini who gave us the opportunity to explore new solutions in terms of design”, commented Francesco Paskowski.

Additionally, “Aurelia possesses an industrialised inspired model which takes after some of New York’s sophisticated lofts. Brushed oak strips dedicated for the flooring enhance a vintage feel which blends well with slate coloured finishes, details, cement glass iron and aluminium. Brown hues and gun metal greys of precious fabric and furniture upholstery, treated skin made to look old is used for sofas and armchairs’ upholstery. The styling of the lamp and faucets bring out an atmosphere of industrial inspiration”.

Cant Marche Flexplorer 130

The layout requested foresees just four cabins with the owner suite situated along the main deck and with three guest cabins along the lower deck. There’s loads of room for a wine cellar distributed on two levels, it is made up of two columns with a capacity of 44 bottles in each and a gym equipped with latest Technogym gear.

A pair of Caterpillar C32 746kW engines are expected to deliver a top speed of 14 knots and a range of 7,000 nautical miles at 10 knots with a fuel consumption of 70 litres/hour. This thanks to a CFD designed hull tested in Holland’s institute as well as resulting into a perfect match with the engines.

THE FLEXPLORER LINE

Ennio cecchini - co-founder & president sergio cutolo - naval architect & exterior designer.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

“The creation of the Flexplorer line stemmed from the shipyard's aspiration to advance the Explorer Yacht concept, pushing the boundaries of exploration and granting access to the earth's remotest areas, devoid of any services or assistance,” says Ennio Cecchini , co-founder and President of Cantiere delle Marche. “The concepts that were already present in the Darwin line have been further developed in the Flexplorer line, with particular attention to two aspects: further development of internal volumes and the possibility of accommodating unusually large tenders for yachts of this size.”

“When embarking on extended journeys without making landfall, it becomes essential to have ample space to accommodate a sizable tender and various other recreational equipment,” says Ennio Cecchini .

Tenders of 8 meters and above with an approximate weight of about two tons can be carried by the Flexplorers, thanks to the ample space available at the stern and the tender launching system. The A-frame crane, stemmed from an idea of the company’s President and was developed by AMS in collaboration with Cantiere delle Marche’s technical Department. Tenders of this size are typically found on 50/60-meter vessels with a Gross Tonnage exceeding 500 GT. However, on the Flexplorer 146-35 there is no A-frame crane because the Owner opted for a jib-crane encompassed in the superstructure.

“The inspiration for the Flexplorer line comes from highly specialized vessels, typically offering support to ships, such as supply vessels, which have extensive aft surfaces designated for cargo. In this case, the space maintains its multifunctionality and flexibility adding to it all sort of amenities and comfort of a luxury yacht,” says naval architect and designer Sergio Cutolo.

The exterior lines are modern, harmonious, and muscular, with details featuring sharp lines and edges, highlighting the character and stylistic recognition.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

With the three Flexplorer 146 under construction, two paths have been followed:

On one hand, the base-model of the Flexplorer 146 has been developed following the line of the Flexplorer 130, Aurelia, which boasts an unusually large aft main deck for a yacht of her size. One of them, the Flexplorer 146-35, has indeed the same configuration of Aurelia (Flexplorer 130). No need to say that the larger dimensions of the 146-footers offer increased habitable volumes and cargo capacity.

The other two yachts of the Flexplorer line, Flexplorer 146-30 and 36, take a further step adding an additional deck to meet the needs of owners who desire a dedicated owner's deck with private spaces.

All three new Flexplorers will sail at a maximum speed of 14 knots and have a range, at economical speed, exceeding 5,000 nautical miles.

The Flexplorer is a very rational vessel, where engineering and design merge and integrate completely. Form must follow function, as these are extremely practical boats. However, there is a significant human factor that goes beyond practical elements, which is the charm of a project that represents the creation of a shipyard that pioneered a new type of vessel, starting with the idea of creating a niche product and becoming the reference point for that product.

“The concept of a pocket-explorer, that is, a medium-sized explorer, has already reached an advanced level, both in terms of remarkable technical and stylistic aspects, thanks to the careful and consistent work of CdM anf Hydro Tec’s teams, which now boasts more than a decade of collaboration” Cecchini maintains. “It has further evolved by creating a medium-sized vessel below 500 GT with unique and unparalleled technical characteristics, encapsulating everything that was missing in a compact yacht, offering owners with a thirst for exploration the opportunity to expand their horizons.”

The engine room is one of the sources of that independence as its redundant equipment allow to sail far and wide and to reach remote areas of the globe where it is impossible to access any sort of assistance. An expansive lazarette provides a very large storage area needed for many cruising necessities, water toys, sport and diving equipment, etc.

44m CDM Flexplorer 146 explorer yacht Maverick

Maverick: Cantiere delle Marche delivers first Flexplorer 146 yacht

Italian yard Cantiere delle Marche (CDM) has successfully delivered the 44.3-metre Maverick . According to BOATPro , the explorer yacht is now moored in Valetta, Malta.

Maverick is currently undergoing her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean with the owner and his family on board. She will then embark on an extensive journey to the Northern latitudes with the ultimate goal of crossing the Northwest Passage.

Sold to an “experienced” German owner, Maverick is the inaugural vessel among a trio of Flexplorer 146 yachts. She is also the second yacht sold in the Flexplorer line, following the delivery of the smaller Flexplorer 130 Aurelia in 2020.

Described as a “true explorer vessel”, Maverick features a robust displacement hull and exterior design penned by Hydro Tec . The interior, meanwhile, has been designed by Francesco Paszkowski in collaboration with Margherita Casprini .

The yacht boasts several features geared towards functionality, including a custom-built A-frame crane with a lifting capacity of 4.4 tonnes, used to store and launch a 9.5-metre Rivellini tender and an A27 sailing boat. Her hull is also equipped with a 22-millimetre “ice-belt” above and below the waterline to ensure safe navigation at the highest latitudes.

A large infinity pool is included on the aft deck, which can be covered and used as storage for deck furniture when underway. At anchor, collapsible bulwarks on either side of the deck transform the space into a vast outdoor beach club spanning more than 135 square metres.

Other onboard features include a gym, sauna and diving centre, with additional capacity for a rescue boat and jet skis on the forward section of the upper deck.

Guest accommodation is  spread across two owner's cabins on the main deck and upper deck, the latter of which features an adjoining single cabin. The remaining four staterooms will sit on the lower deck. The crew quarters, meanwhile, can accommodate a staff of six.

Maverick is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines for a top speed of 14 knots and a transatlantic range in excess of 5,000 nautical miles. Additional zero-speed stabilisers ensure increased comfort on board.

"The three Flexplorer 146s currently under construction perfectly show the concept’s inherent flexibility, with each unit being significantly distinct from one another,"  said CDM CEO and sales director Vasco Buonpensiere. "Despite each one being unique in its own way, they all share the same features that enable safe exploration of remote destinations while providing utmost comfort and all the amenities expected of a true luxury yacht.”

According to BOATPro , the remaining two Flexplorer models will be delivered in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, KrĂĄsnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

130 cdm flexplorer expedition yacht price

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
