The Ultimate List of 1,000 Foot Freighters on the Great Lakes
It’s hard to pick a favorite freighter when there are nearly countless vessels that call the Great Lakes home and rely on the Soo Locks to haul cargo. Because traveling into Lake Superior is so important for the shipping industry, there are 13 freighters which push the envelope on how large a freighter can be. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, freighters measuring over 1,000 ft. were all the rage. These bulk carriers were designed with the maximum dimensions of the Poe Lock in mind. They’re so large, they can’t travel outside of the Great Lakes. We’re thankful they call the lakes home and are frequent fliers to Sault Ste. Marie.
We’ve gathered up information on all 13 of them to help you keep track of the largest freighters on the Great Lakes. Be sure to hover your cursor over the photos or to tap them on your mobile device to display each vessel’s stats. For more information on these freighters, be sure to visit our TikTok which features facts, trivia, and sometimes just peaceview views of these freighters and more.

Size: 1,000’00”
Capacity: 58,000 tons
Engine Horsepower: 14,000 bhp
The Stewart J. Cort is the one that started it all. In fact the “#1” painted on her aft house celebrates her distinction as the first 1,000 footer. By being the first 1,000 footer, “Stubby,” as she’s affectionately known was in turn briefly the Queen of the Great Lakes (the crown the largest ship on the lakes wears.) Construction for the Stewart J. Cort’s bow and stern begin in 1970 in Mississippi. She was transported up north and in 1971 she had her hull inserted. Her unusual design and method of fabrication gave her the nickname “Stubby.” Her maiden voyage was on May 1, 1972.

Launched: Feb. 4, 1981
Company: Interlake Steamship co.
Size: 1,013’05”
Capacity: 68,000 tons
Engine Horsepower: 17,120
The Paul R. Tregurtha is the current “Queen of the Great Lakes” and the longest reigning “Queen” the Great Lakes has seen. Big Paulie as she’s affectionately known was the last of the 1,000 ft. freighters capping off a decade of ship builds the Great Lakes has never seen and may never see again. The Tregurtha was the last freighter built on the Great Lakes for nearly 30 years until her newest fleetmate, the Mark W. Barker set sail in 2022. Want to take a look at the PRT? View a TikTok on her here . If you’re into vertical videos, we have feature videos on most of the 1,000 footers available here .
1,013 ft. of Freighter Facts
Looking to learn a bit more about these freighters while visiting the Soo Locks? Be sure to take a look along the fence at the Soo Locks Park. You’ll find 13 banners spaced out over 1,013 ft. with each one featuring one of the 1,000 footers. These banners make for great reading material while waiting to watch one of these giant freighters use the Soo Locks.
These 13 freighters are some of the main reasons people visit Sault Ste. Marie, and they’re a huge part of what makes the Soo a unique travel destination. Which one of these lake freighters is your favorite? Be sure to tag your freighter photos with the hashtag #ilovethesoo on social media while visiting Sault Ste. Marie. And don’t forget to tag us on your post on Facebook, Twitter , Pinterest , TikTok , and Instagram.

The Ultimate list of 1,000 Foot Freighters on the Great Lakes
We love big boats and we cannot lie! It’s hard to say which freighter is your favorite when comparing the countless vessels that traverse the waters of the Great Lakes. Although, there are 13 that stand out from the crowd for their sheer goliath-like size. Their sizes range from 1,000 feet in length to 1,013 and they all American. These amazing “1,000-footers” seem to always make it to the top of everyone’s must-see list and attract visitors from across the globe.
While there may be 1,000 interesting tidbits about this baker’s dozen of colossal haulers, we have gathered a guide to help you learn more about them and see what sets them apart from the crowd. You can also find all 13 in our #FreighterFrenzy contest on Twitter taking place throughout March to celebrate the opening of the Soo Locks on the 25th.
Edwin H. Gott
With an engine capable of producing 19,500 horsepower, the Gott is the most powerful freighter on the Great Lakes.
American Integrity – In July 2019, the Integrity and Walter J. McCarthy Jr both broke the Soo Locks Tonnage Record. Hours after the McCarthy set it, the Integrity hauled 76,000 tons of iron ore through the Soo Locks to set the current record. The American Integrity was named the Lewis Wilson Foy and Oglebay Norton prior to 2006.
American Spirit – Originally the George A. Stinson, she was renamed in 2004 to honor the spirit of the American Steamship Company’s workers as well as the spirit of America.
American Century – Once known as the Columbia Star, in honor of the brig Columbia which was the first vessel to haul iron ore through the Soo Locks in 1855, the American Century was renamed in 2006 once she was purchased by American Steamship Company.
Paul R. Tregurtha
Paul R. Tregurtha – Sporting the title “the Queen of the Lakes” for being the largest freighter to sail on the Great Lakes, “Big Paul” is a staggering 1,013 feet in length. The Paul R. Tregurtha is one of the most popular vessels on the Great Lakes.
Edgar B. Speer – There are only two Great Lakes ports that can service her unique self-unloading system. Those ports are located in Gary, Indiana and Conneaut, Ohio.
James R. Barker – This beauty was the third vessel built to this impressive scale. She was the first 1,000-footer built entirely on the Great Lakes for the Interlake Steamship fleet.
Mesabi Miner – Named after the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota, the Mesabi Miner is the sister ship of the James R. Barker. Her 265-foot self-unloading boom is able to offload cargo at up to 10,000 tons per hour.
Indiana Harbor
This beauty looks like a gentle giant as she peacefully makes her way past a gaggle of paddleboarders, but she is one of the most capable 1,000-footers on the Great Lakes. The Indiana Harbor was the first U.S. flagged vessel on the Great Lakes to be equipped with satellite communication equipment in 1983.
Stewart J. Cort – Perhaps the most well-known of the 1,000-footers, the Cort was the first freighter to reach this milestone length when she launched in 1972. The Cort is the only 1,000-footer with a forward-facing pilothouse.
Walter McCarthy Jr – The McCarthy Jr boasts four V-20 3,600 horsepower GM diesel engines. She briefly held the Soo Locks Tonnage Record in 2019 for a few hours before the American Integrity carried an even larger load through the system. The McCarthy’s design was also used for the Burns Harbor, Indiana Harbor, American Spirit, and American Integrity.
Burns Harbor – She can haul either iron ore or coal, and has a deadweight tonnage capacity of 80,900. The Burns Harbor was the last vessel of the 2019 shipping season to pass through the Soo Locks on Jan. 15, 2020.
Presque Isle
Photo credit: U.S. Army Corp of Engineers
The Presque Isle is the only 1,000-foot tugboat/barge combination on the Great Lakes and is the largest of its kind in the world. She was constructed in separate sections at different shipyards in 1972. Construction cost a reported $35 million, which equates to over $230 million in 2020.
All of the boats on this distinguished list are worthy of greatness. Which boat is your favorite? be sure to tag all of your amazing freighter photos with the hashtag #ilovethesoo on social media. And don’t forget to tag us on your post on Facebook, Twitter , Pinterest , and Instagram.

65m undersea superyacht Phoenix 1000 is a personal luxury submarine built by US Submarines. Submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 is the single largest private undersea vehicle ever built, and probably one of the most important personal transportation devices of the century.
US Submarines Phoenix 1000 submarine
213´ luxury submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 has more than ample space. The total interior area of the submarine is in excess of 460 square meters (5000 square feet). The significant volume, coupled with very large acrylic viewports, and the potential for relatively large open spaces, results in a vehicle as luxurious as the finest of motor yachts.
Clearly, underwater super yacht Phoenix 1000 provides its owner with substantially more capability than a simple yacht – the opportunity to explore the depths of the world’s oceans in perfect comfort and safety. The Phoenix 1000 yacht is capable of making trans-Atlantic crossings at 16 knots yet can dive along the route and explore the continental margins of some of the most fascinating waters on earth.
US Submarines Phoenix 1000
And unlike surface yachts, when the water gets rough, the submarine can submerge into a perfectly smooth and quiet environment, continuing on toward its destination, providing a ride unsurpassed in quality-unequaled by the finest motor coach or the most luxurious executive aircraft.
At 65-meters (213 feet) in overall length, and with a beam in excess of 8 meters (26 feet), the Phoenix 1000 is a vehicle of formidable size. Yet despite its 1500-ton displacement, the submarine is quite streamlined. Given the significant waterplane area and ample internal volume, which allows for greater battery storage, the Phoenix 1000 yacht will out-perform smaller counterparts in surface speed, submerged speed and submerged endurance.

The large pressure hull diameter allows for very large acrylic viewports, making the undersea viewing capability truly extraordinary. The interior space, with the noted absence of structural bulkheads, provides for tremendous versatility in interior layout and space planning. And finally, the Phoenix 1000’s large size coupled with its integrated roll stabilization system makes surface transit quite comfortable in all but the worst conditions.
Flying Bridge
The uppermost level of the vessel is the flying bridge. This area is similar to its equivalent area on most yachts, with the exception of the fact that the materials selected are subject to immersion in water. Ample space exists for lounging, and cushions may be brought up from the area below. The flying bridge also houses the pressure-compensated radar radome, GPS antennae and satellite communications radome, as well as radio aerials, running lights, etc. A remote steering station is also available.
Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht
Deck Saloon
Immediately below the flying bridge and accessible through a large hydraulically operated hatch and a stairway, is the deck saloon. As proposed, this area would be composed of structural acrylic cylindrical sections 2.1 meters (7′) in diameter and 20 centimeters (8″) in thickness. The overall length of the deck saloon pressure hull would be 12 meters.
The deck saloon would have a comfortably appointed interior and would boast an incredible view for observation, both on the surface and when submerged. By fitting transparent sections into the deck of the flying bridge, a view above can be enjoyed as well.
In the forward portion of the saloon is the surface bridge. This area contains all the necessary control, monitoring and navigation equipment to operate the submarine in the surfaced condition. The captain has a hemispherical sector acrylic viewport immediately in front, with the transparent cylindrical walls to either side.
The aft portion of the saloon has a large acrylic window, providing a view astern that also acts as a large hydraulically operated hatch. A small automobile could be kept in the aft section if desired.
Superstructure
The superstructure itself is composed principally of aluminum (or FRP if the owner prefers), and it houses the deck saloon pressure vessel and also provides the structural base for the flying bridge. There is a large degree of latitude possible with regard to the styling of the structure, with the caveat that its hydrodynamic efficiency will have a significant effect on the submerged speed of the submarine.
Aft of the deck saloon is a covered space that can be either fully or partially enclosed. The greater the degree of closure to the after portion of the structure, the less turbulence and the more hydromdynamic efficiency. Hydraulically actuated after doors could be designed to open, allowing fresh air to circulate. The area would be excellent for covered, informal, deck-level dining.
Docking Minisub
Aft of the superstructure, or optionally, above the control cabin on the bow, is an area for a docking minisub. Utilizing a special docking collar, this vehicle is capable of leaving the Phoenix 1000 superyacht while submerged and making excursions down to 610 meters (2000 feet). With both top and bottom hatches, the minisub could also bring passengers from the surface to the submarine lying at depth. The minisub could be designed to hold between two and eight passengers, depending upon the owner’s preferences. Additionally, in the unlikely event of an emergency at depth, the minisub could be used to take passengers and crew to the surface.
Forward Control Room
The forward control room is entered from the main deck through a watertight, pressure-proof door. The control room has a 2.4 meter (8′) diameter hemispherical sector acrylic viewport forward and three 1.8 meter (6′) diameter viewports on either side, with the foremost pair angled slightly forward.
The control room contains all of the control and navigation equipment necessary to operate the submarine while submerged. The 8 meter x 4 meter (26′ x 13′) area contains sufficient space to fit comfortable lounge chairs for passenger observation while underway.
Main Passenger Areas
The main passenger area consists of two decks, each 31 meters (102′) long and 6 meters (20′) wide. The upper deck is accessed from one of two hatches, either from the deck saloon or from a hatch to the after portion of the superstructure. Two stairways, one in the center of the deck, the other in the after section, lead to the lower deck.
The upper deck is intended to provide space for an engineering workstation, a switch and contactor room, crew cabins and mess, as well as the galley. The forward portion, which ends at a bulkhead, is designed as a room of the owner’s choosing.
The main deck is situated such that the forward portion, with eight 1.8 meter (6′) diameter acrylic windows, contains the living and dining areas, while the section aft of the beam houses the owner’s stateroom and guest cabins. Five viewports, 90 centimeters (35″) in diameter, are situated on both port and starboard sides.
Below the passenger area is the battery compartment and bilge. A narrow manway allows access through the compartment for battery maintenance.
Engine Room
The engine room is accessed through doors at the after portion of both passenger decks. The space contains the majority of the equipment necessary for the submarine’s operation, including the main diesels, motor generators, drive systems, air compressors, hydraulic aggregates and life support systems. The upper level of the engine space provides access to the minisub, and in the stern section, to a diver lock-out chamber. The bottom level allows maintenance of the main engines and related components. Diver Lock-out Chamber
A spherical diver lock-out chamber, 2.4 meters (8′) in diameter is fitted above the shafts and attached to the aftermost section of the pressure hull. The chamber allows a diver to enter or exit the submarine from the area between the shafts at depths of up to 45 meters (150′). The chamber can be fitted with decompression capability if required.

The little (electric) engine that could: The Port of San Diego unveils the nation’s first all-electric tug boat
The 82-foot eWolf expects to eliminate 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.
Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.
For the record:
1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.
“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”
Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.
Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.
“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”
The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.
Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.
Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.
“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”
The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.
Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.
But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.
The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.
In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.
By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.
“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.
Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

A 75-foot-yacht off the coast of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach caught fire, forcing its occupants to jump into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Mayday call for "a recreational vessel on fire" came in around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson of the U.S. Coast Guard told USA TODAY over the phone.
Motor Vessel Savage, a 75-foot-yacht, was on fire about two miles off the coast of Cape Henry.
Three adults who were on board the vessel jumped into the water and were later rescued by a pilot boat, said U.S.C.G.

Pierce Brosnan apologises after fined for walking off trail in Yellowstone
(Reuters) - Actor Pierce Brosnan has said he deeply regrets walking off trail in Yellowstone National Park in the United States after he was fined by a court in Wyoming for getting too close to a thermal area.
Brosnan, 70, pleaded guilty to foot travel in a thermal area and was fined $500 and required to pay a $1,000 community service payment to the Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Wyoming, said on Thursday.
Citing court documents, it said the James Bond actor had in November uploaded photos to Instagram of himself "standing on a Yellowstone National Park thermal feature at Mammoth Hot Springs", referring to the scenic area in the park's northern part.
"There are signs posted in the area that warn visitors of the dangers of thermal features and state that visitors must remain on the designated boardwalks and trails," it said.
Walking of trail in such thermal areas can be perilous as the ground is fragile and the water extremely hot.
Posting on his Instagram page late on Thursday, Brosnan said he was "an environmentalist" who had "the utmost respect for and love of our natural world".
"However, I made an impulsive mistake - one that I do not take lightly - when entering a thermal area covered in snow in Yellowstone National Park to take a photograph. I did not see a 'No Trespassing' sign posted that warned of danger nor did I hike in the immediate area," he wrote.
"I deeply regret my transgression and offer my heartfelt apologies to all for trespassing in this sensitive area. Yellowstone and all our National Parks are to be cared for and preserved for all to enjoy."
He added #StayOnThePath.
Brosnan is known for playing the suave 007 agent in four James Bond films from 1995 to 2002 as well as for his roles in the "Mamma Mia" movies, "The Thomas Crown Affair" and most recently "Black Adam".
