A 7-day private yacht charter itinerary visiting New England

Depart Newport at noon and cruise to Block Island, just 12 miles southwest, and one of the premier yachting ports-of-call of your New England yacht charter. Renowned for its fresh and salt water fishing, it has two fine harbors:

New Harbor on the west side of the island, boasts the beautiful Great Salt Pond. This completely enclosed salt pond has three large marinas, 100 town moorings and anchorage for 1,000 yachts. It’s a three-minute taxi ride or 15-minute walk to town or to Crescent Beach.

You can always catch something in Block Island's Great Salt Pond, surfcasting off the 20 miles of island beaches, or by taking your friends on a fishing charter trip offshore. Most beaches have public access, and skiffs or kayaks are available to rent for the day or the hour.

Old Harbor on the east side of the Island is the center of town. A breakwater protects it, but there is limited space for dockage at the town dock.

Depart Block Island for Martha’s Vineyard. It’s approximately 28 NM east to Menemsha, a small fishing village located in the town of Chilmark. Martha’s Vineyard is well accustomed to greeting visitors who arrive by sea. Many towns offer mooring, marina, launch and fuel service. Your New England yacht charter takes you to historic towns that are close to harbors, and mariners will find a wonderful variety of shops, restaurants and services within easy walking distance. There’s a public beach adjacent to the harbor and the bicycle ferry.

Depart Menemsha and sail northeast to Edgartown. One of New England's most elegant communities, Edgartown was the Island's first colonial settlement; it has been on the county seat since 1642.

Main Street’s harbor and waterfront is a picture book setting. To view and fully appreciate this town, walk its streets. North Water Street has a row of captains' houses, many which predate the whaling era.

You’ll find excellent public beaches. Norton's Point, known as South Beach or Katama, is a barrier beach providing surf bathing and the opportunity to explore Katama Bay on the other side of the dunes. Lighthouse Beach, located off North Water Street near the town center, offers calm water and views of harbor activities. Make a lunch stop at Quik’s Hole or Tarpauliu.

Depart Edgartown and cruise southeast to Nantucket Island, approximately 20 NM.

On your approach to Nantucket, you may be greeted by harbor seals, often found sunning themselves on the jetties. Once you round Brant Point Lighthouse, you will discover one of the most beautiful places on earth... Nantucket Harbor.

Anchor or tie up at Nantucket Boat Basin. Just two blocks from Nantucket Town, it’s a charming, historic seaport with fascinating shops, unique galleries and world-class restaurants.

Your New England yacht charter will take you to wide sandy beaches are as beautiful as any in the world. Swim in the sparkling waters of Nantucket Sound to the north, or brave the mighty Atlantic along the island’s south shore. Try your hand at surfcasting for stripers and bluefish, or charter a boat for deep-sea fishing.

For those who prefer a more tranquil experience, dinghy to your own private beach on Coatue or head up to Wauwinet Harbor; enjoy a picnic or have a grand lunch at the Wauwinet House. Fishing, clamming and swimming are all available.

If you have small children, don’t miss a dinghy ride to Children's Beach...where you will find a playground and a lifeguard on the beach. Take a guided tour of the island or pick up a picnic lunch and rent a bike, a good way of discovering Nantucket for yourself.

Head northwest to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. Oak Bluffs is a short run from Newport, Block Island, Cuttyhunk, Boston, the Cape and Nantucket. As a result, it is a nice stop as either a multi-port cruise, or an exciting port-of-call.

The largest marina on Martha's Vineyard, Oak Bluffs not only has the most slips, but is situated right in the midst of a historic gingerbread campground, and offers easy access to the rest of the island.

As you enter the harbor, you will see the Oak Bluffs Marina office on your port side. There are 80 slips, 45 moorings, and med-moorings for yachts up to 105' in length. Hail "Oak Bluffs Marina" on VHF channel 71, and the staff will direct you to a slip or a suitable mooring. Slips fill quickly on weekends, so book a day ahead.

Depart Oak Bluffs and head northwest to Woods Hole, less than 10 NM (a great lunch stop), or on to Cuttyhunk Island. Woods Hole is a salty, sea spray village that brings the Nobel Laureate and the local angler together in harmony. Take a short walk along the beach road, Church Street, to historic Nobska Lighthouse for sensational views of Vineyard Sound, Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard.

If you wish to linger for the day, visit Spohr's Garden on Fells Road. It’s hard to find, but the spring sea of daffodils in this waterfront garden is spectacular. A visit to the Bradley House Museum to explore the history of whaling and the Woods Hole Historical Collection is a "must" for history buffs. Serene Quissett Harbor is perfect for peaceful walks any time of the year. Just follow the path that leads to the "Knob," a little chunk of land overlooking Buzzards Bay and perfect for viewing crimson sunsets.

Plan your arrival and departure for slack tide. The currents in Woods Hole Passage can exceed 7 knots -- some of the swiftest in the world! Use good, up-to-date nautical charts of the area, as the buoy set- up is tricky.

Cuttyhunk Island rests 12 miles south of New Bedford, MA and 8 miles west of Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard. Cuttyhunk has two harbors. The main harbor lies between Cuttyhunk and Nashawena Island to the east. Follow the narrow channel to the west to find a deepwater basin in Cuttyhunk Pond. The scenery in the harbor is beautiful.

A great place to do a whole lot of nothing, Cuttyhunk has a small beach, a great harbor, good fishing, a few dozen houses, some great ice cream, and some beautiful hiking trails. There are no discos, bars, malls, party life, video games, parking lots, traffic or much action.

What Cuttyhunk does have is a quiet, isolated, beautiful, ocean environment, perfect for getting in touch with yourself and your family, or just catching up with your reading.

Sail from Cuttyhunk to Newport, RI, about 20 NM. Newport is synonymous with yachting at its most glorious, and nothing is finer than a New England yacht charter in the summer. Refresh yourself with golden sunrises, steaming lobsters and fresh salt air. Elegant mansions, historic inns and exquisite restaurants line the cobblestone streets of Newport’s historic shorefront. You’ll see America’s Cup yachts racing in the harbor, modern racing machines moored beside legendary traditional yachts, class boats and dinghies of every type.

Stroll the breathtaking Cliff Walk, and wander through lush Topiary Gardens. Visit the Museum of Yachting and the Tennis Hall of Fame. For a mouth- watering getaway, enjoy a tour and tasting at the three local vineyards followed by a memorable dining experience at a waterfront restaurant.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before preparing to disembark at midday.

At times, travelers can find adventure right at your doorstep; this is especially true in the case of New England. Located in the northeastern part of the United States, this unique region is known for its colonial past, Atlantic coastline, stunning beaches, and stunning autumn foliage. New England yacht charters open the door to admire and explore what the waters have to offer. Internationally recognized as one of the best sailing locations globally, New England has over 400 miles of coastline that is steeped in rich maritime heritage that you can discover with sailboat charters in New England.

Newport is America’s yachting capital and is a perfect place for shopping, scenery, and good food. Maritime trade built this colonial town, and most of its 18th-century architectural features can still be seen today, giving this small town its unique edge. Thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod is the isolated island of Nantucket known for whales, breweries, lighthouses, and fishing. Just west of Nantucket is Martha’s Vineyard, another island, which is curiously not famous for wine. Hop around from island to island with private yacht charters in New England. Instead, it is a popular vacation destination for people wanting to explore its beaches and lush green forests. Maine has over 5,000 miles of coastline and is famous for one particular type of crustacean, the Maine lobster. Although famous for seafood, it is also the home of various harbors and bays waiting to be explored, including Boothbay and Bar Harbour, which offer great shops, fun cafes, and gorgeous scenery to travel with our New England boat charters.

Newport – america’s yachting gateway.

Newport, Rhode Island, with its America’s Cup heritage, has long been the gateway to New England, especially for sailors. Though they lie together off the Massachusetts coast, the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket each have their own character.

Cape Cod is the part quiet countryside, part elite retreat. Hyannis is regarded as being a longtime outpost for American royalty, with the Kennedy family vacationing here for generations. Each place seems strikingly similar, yet still has a unique feel and attitude. One thing that holds true throughout is the unhurried pace of life and the picturesque beauty.

Maine Coast

Spectacularly rugged shorelines, harbors, coves, and islands. You could spend a lifetime cruising the Maine coast and still have an abundance of opportunities for new discoveries. Scenically unmatched, settle into a day of gunkholing and land-based day trips. Refresh the palette with local seafood and your favorite sunset cocktail.

Newport, Rhode Island

Meet your yacht in Newport, regarded as the sailing capital of the world – fittingly so as it’s home to the famed New York Yacht Club, which kept America’s Cup trophy safe for 132 years. Take time to visit some of the historic mansions that line the shore, peruse the boutiques and enjoy dinner at a waterfront restaurant.

Newport to Block Island

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast as your yacht motors to Block Island, a beautiful gem that is a great spot for onshore outdoor pursuits such as hiking and biking, and on-water diversions such as sailing and fishing.

There are also plenty of beaches where you can while away the afternoon – the crew will pack you a picnic lunch. Dine on board this evening, enjoying island views.

Nantucket to Martha’s Vineyard

After breakfast on board, the yacht will leave for Martha’s Vineyard, a longtime playground of the elite. The island is a summer haven, dotted with pretty beaches, harbor towns and cliffs topped by lighthouses. After a visit to the brightly colored cliffs at Aquinnah, sail around to Vineyard Haven and stop at the Black Dog Tavern for chowder at lunch.

A bit further down the coast is Edgartown, famed as the location where Jaws was filmed. Your captain will recommend an elegant restaurant for dinner ashore this evening.

Martha’s Vineyard to Hyannis

Wake up to find the yacht en route to Hyannis on Cape Cod – famed as the Kennedy family’s getaway. Those interested in presidential history should visit the JFK Hyannis Museum on Main Street. Dine on fresh seafood tonight, overlooking the harbor bustling with yachts and local boats.

Charms with its gray shingled cottages and a quaint main street. Don your “Nantucket reds” and feel right at home. Bike along the paths that lead to dune-backed beaches or history buffs will enjoy a tour of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Take a bicycle ride around the postcard-perfect island.

The Elizabeth Islands

Leave Cape Cod behind as you head for the Elizabeth Islands, where you can stop off for a swim before anchoring in Hadley Harbor, secluded among forests and pastures. Cars are forbidden here, so the only way to arrive is by yacht, hiking in or on horseback. Take out the kayaks and water toys and enjoy frolicking in this quiet, picturesque spot.

Hadley Harbor to Newport

One last breakfast in this idyllic setting, then it’s a few-hour cruise to Newport. Stroll through the town, and have another clam chowder or lobster before the plane home.

Insider guide New England.

Published 16 July 2020

New England will forever be associated with glamorous figures like John F Kennedy and JD Rockefeller, who spent their summers sailing here. The beauty and heritage of New England’s coastline is like a dot to dot map of cultural highlights, offering something for everyone with gorgeous scenery and charm in abundance. It is the quintessential American cruising ground.

These ragged coasts and rocky isles have always been home to seafaring folk, so chartering a yacht is the perfect way to discover New England. Deeply proud of its produce, the region has endless events celebrating local delicacies, such as Maine lobsters, Wellfleet oysters and Vermont beer. History has never been more alive – or more delicious – than along New England’s coast.

Below, we highlight the very best areas to visit during your charter and we include two interviews with our most experienced captains who share their first-hand knowledge of this wonderful cruising ground.

Chart of New England

yacht guide new england

One of Long Island's best kept secrets, Sag Harbor is not simply a physical memory of days gone by nestling amid celebrity mansions, it is a destination in its own right. The old whaling town is edged with historic homes and you'll find a number of fine restaurants and shops on its main street. Down by the water is a windmill commemorating former mayor and author John Steinbeck who spent the last years of his life in Sag Harbor.

Block Island

yacht guide new england

The white sandy beaches, laid back vibe, and island time mentality of Block Island have earned it the nickname 'Bermuda of the North'. Stroll along the beach, which stretches for miles to the north of Old Harbor, cycle around the island's rolling farmland and get to know the calls of the many migratory bird species in the National Wildlife Refuge (above) in the island's northern tip. Then head to South East Light atop the Mohegan Bluffs, the best place on the island to watch the sunset.

yacht guide new england

The most famous landmarks in Newport have to be the Newport mansions, built in the mid-1800s by wealthy socialites and great New York families like the Astors and Vanderbilts as summer getaways. Cliff Walk provides beautiful views over the back gardens of these famous properties. A walk at Sachuest Point has stunning views and a cooling breeze, or a bike ride down Bellevue Avenue allows for some sightseeing of fabulous properties. Cool off with a quick dip at Easton’s Beach, which lies to the east of the town.

Martha's Vineyard

yacht guide new england

'The Vineyard' has long been the vacation destination of choice for many former Presidents. Best known for its wild beaches and red-orange clay cliffs, the island is rich in history and an emerging gastronomy scene attracts foodies the world over. From the port town of Oak Bluffs, the bustling Vineyard Haven and cosmopolitan Edgartown, to the quaint fishing villages of Menemsha and Chilmark, the island provides the perfect blend of downtime and diversion. Cruise through Katama Bay along the shores of Chappaquiddick where you can browse the boutiques and art galleries or grab a clambake.

yacht guide new england

Famous for its 'Nantucket-gray' weathered beach houses, this is the place to head for old school, barefoot relaxation. Explore 80 miles of coastline and 23 named beaches, cycle the island’s sandy trails and cool off with a dip in Nantucket Sound. Catch the famous sunsets at Madaket, said to be the best in all New England, before enjoying a fantastic choice of restaurants in Nantucket Town. Alive with history, its cobblestone streets are still lined with the whaling company owners' grand mansion houses, all perfectly preserved in their 19th century style by Nantucket’s historic society.

The Ultimate New England Yacht Charter Itinerary

Comprising the states of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, New England ’s famous Atlantic coastline is a paradise for luxury yacht charters wanting to take in the best that the region has to offer.

Sailing along the wild Atlantic coast is best when the weather is warm and the seas calm, which is typically from May through to late September. During the early summer months, the region is a cacophony of emerald green canopies, colourful plants, and the sweet fragrance of marigolds and violets, not forgetting the stunning beaches, townships, and coves waiting to be enjoyed.

From the southern charm of Boston to the ever-changing scenery of Nantucket, here’s our perfect itinerary for your yacht charter in New England.

1. Rhode Island to Nantucket

Start your yacht charter in New England by climbing onboard your chosen yacht at Rhode Island. Rhode Island is the perfect place to embark on your trip, home to some of the biggest superyachts and an extensive yachting and sailing history, it’s easy to see why it is called the city by the sea .

As you set sail, you’ll make your way past some of the most legendary mansions in New England. From the Astors to the Vanderbilts, imposing architecture and views into the world of the mega-rich are everywhere to be seen.

From here, you can make your way to Nantucket, known as the whaling capital of the world. Spend a few hours hiking or biking around pristine beaches and wild Atlantan landscapes before heading back to your luxury yacht for dinner and pampering as the sunsets over the Atlantic.

2. Nantucket to Edgartown

Famous for its whaling past, Nantucket is next up on the destination itinerary. A wild expanse of seagrass, sand dunes and historic buildings, it’s now a superyacht destination for multi-millionaires and the elite crowd looking to enjoy the high life. With so much to do here, you’ll definitely want to spend at least a full day enjoying what’s on offer.

Tie up at Nantucket Harbour and make your way to CRU, a stylish and upmarket waterfront hotspot serving up sizzling seafood, decadent drinks and stunning views over the bay. Landmarks include the Old Mill, Brant Point Lighthouse and Hadwen House.

Of course, one of the biggest draws to Nantucket is its beaches. No matter whether you want to enjoy a spot of surfing, sunning yourself on soft sand, fishing or swimming, there’s something for everyone. In the evening, sip on champagne cocktails and enjoy a few light bites at The Gazebo in Harbour Square before heading back to your yacht for some much-needed rest.

3. Edgartown to Boston

Edgartown, situated to the South of the Cape has a long and rich history of hosting American presidents and A-list celebrities at Martha’s Vineyard. Roosevelt, Kennedy and Clinton have set up base here to retreat to some of New England’s most spectacular coastline and scenery.

Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a postcard-perfect scene, welcomed by the old lighthouse and jutting rockscapes before making your way past the pristine sandy beach. Spend the day exploring upscale shops, galleries and boutiques or enjoy a round or two at Farm Neck Golf Club.

Once you’ve exhausted the charms of the town, board your yacht and make your way to the cliffs of Gays Head for a spot of fishing before heading toward the cosmopolitan call of Boston.

Why more superyachts than ever are cruising in the US

Related articles.

Once the yachting hub of America’s most influential families, New England on the US East Coast is luring superyachts back to its historic cruising grounds

“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or to watch it – we are going back from whence we came.”

Spoken by US president John F. Kennedy, these words echoed across the foyer of The Breakers mansion in Newport in 1962. A passionate yachtsman who would escape to sea during his presidency for respite, Kennedy was a guest at a celebratory America’s Cup dinner inside the city’s most magnificent Gilded Age home when he uttered the words that still resonate with sailors today. It is only fitting that JFK would express his love of the sea in the place he enjoyed sailing most: the New England coast.

Running along North America’s eastern shore from Maine to Rhode Island, New England has a long and significant connection with the sea. The landing site of the Pilgrims’ Mayflower and the birthplace of the America’s Cup regatta, the region was once the summertime playground of the most powerful families in the US, inviting billionaire bankers, Boston Brahmins and First Families to its shores for the summer sailing season.

With other destinations off limits in recent years, New England’s coastal states have now seen something of a revival with the yachting set. Nearly 350 superyachts headed to New England in August 2021, an increase of more than 60 from pre-pandemic years. Some of the standout vessels spotted taking in the charms this coastline has to offer included 75-metre Huntress , 87-metre Fountainhead and 60-metre Perseus 3 . And far from finding mere relics of the past, owners and charterers discovered that New England’s old outposts are now being refreshed and refurbished to keep up with modern demands.

Following in the wake of the superyacht fleet, I find myself standing in the hallway of The Breakers, where JFK delivered that iconic speech. I marvel at how the elaborate architecture of this lavish home competes with the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean on its doorstep. An opulent symbol of New England’s glamorous Gilded Age, the home was constructed for Cornelius Vanderbilt II with funds derived from the family’s prosperous shipping business, and its rooms – each decked with gilt furnishings and dripping crystal chandeliers – still hold a collection of trophies from Harold Stirling Vanderbilt’s celebrated sailing career.

The Breakers has now been transformed into a museum, but 10 minutes away visitors will find another historical Vanderbilt home in which to rest their head, now under new management and with an exciting revamp underway.

Rumoured to have been designed as a hideaway for the mistress of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, this 1909 red-brick home has since been reformed into a handsome boutique hotel known as The Vanderbilt. The original façade and indoor swimming pool remain unchanged, but since being taken over by Auberge Resorts in 2018, the 33 rooms and atmospheric common spaces have been gradually renovated to bring the establishment up to date without totally painting over the building’s unique past.

“We are beyond excited about how the property looks now,” enthuses front office manager Elena Pupazan. “The interior designers, SWOON, tried to keep the same Gilded Age decor and the style and look of Newport’s downtown mansions,” she elaborates. The rooms are covered in hand-drawn wallpaper and vintage portraits and its ornate parlour houses a hidden speakeasy bar.

The dining room is the most recent part of the renovation to be completed, now finished in a rich, moody colour palette, accompanied by a cosy red-brick fireplace and a backlit cocktail bar. The younger generation that populates Newport is out in force as I dine alongside professional types in cocktail dresses and sharp blazers. With the ocean minutes away, fresh seafood dominates the menu in the form of tangy, lemon-drenched mussels or a plate of the day’s catch served up with briny samphire and browned butter.

For foodies looking to get more hands-on there is also the option to learn how to shuck fresh Rhode Island oysters with specialists from the nearby Matunuck Oyster Farm. This is just one of a handful of specially curated experiences offered by the property – many of which naturally highlight Newport’s connection with the sailing community. Nautical options include racing on America’s Cup schooners around Narragansett Bay – the waters where JFK would often sail on his yacht Honey Fitz – or going behind the scenes at local shipyards that are restoring classic yachts.

The Vanderbilt is, of course, not the only legacy that remains in Newport. From the Astor, Forbes and Roosevelt families to JP Morgan and Howard Hughes, this harbour town was once descended upon by numerous American moguls, who would berth their spectacular sailing yachts and steamships on the waterfront between May and October. In the past couple of summers, 70-metre Freedom and 95-metre Kismet are just some of the superyachts that have dropped anchor on the city’s doorstep.

When Newport’s harbour becomes a little too bustling, the quieter island of Martha’s Vineyard – favoured by US presidents past and present, from Ulysses S Grant to Kennedy, Clinton and Obama – is less than 30 nautical miles away. The former whaling island is rich in history like much of New England, but new blood is giving the Vineyard’s historic hotels a fresh face influenced by modern tastes, enticing superyachts such as 56-metre Baba’s and 40-metre Cetacea back to its cruising grounds last season.

The Harbor View Hotel dates back to 1891 but new ownership, followed by a recent multi-million-dollar renovation, has ensured the resort is far from resting on its century-old laurels. All of the rooms inside the quintessential, weathered-wood building have been refurbished with what general manager Scott Little describes as a “nautical fit and finish”– think crisp white linens, splashes of marine blue fabric and glossy wood furniture that keeps the focus on the sights and sounds of the ocean out front. Visitors who chose to stay in the main complex – where Steven Spielberg and his crew lodged to film Jaws in 1974 – or who rent one of the white-picket fenced Victorian Captain’s Cottages, will be treated to an experience that rivals the summertime offerings of some of the Mediterranean’s best grande dame hotels.

The Bettini restaurant, backdropped by Edgartown Lighthouse, functions as the hotel’s social hub. The menu here offers an innovative take on New England cuisine – during my visit I’m treated to locally sourced seafood served up in the form of creamy tuna tartare seasoned with soy sauce and bursting with rich flavours, followed by a classic cheesecake that’s tweaked with fresh thyme-infused blueberries. The delights continue as after a morning stroll along the gently creaking boardwalk, where I watch the sunrise turn the sandy beach a dusty-rose colour, I return to Bettini for a stack of fluffy pancakes drenched in thick maple syrup from the fellow New England state of Vermont.

The hotel attracts its fair share of visiting superyachts. “In any given summer there may be 400 boats in the nearby waters,” says Little. “In our peak season we get maybe 10 or 20 luxury yachts up here.” Recent visitors include 63-metre Scout and 70-metre Martha Ann , and Little impresses that the hotel aims to cater to those “looking for equal accommodations [on land] to what they have arrived on”.

For those who’ve left their yacht elsewhere, Harbor View offers day charters with local captain Scott Morgan on board his classic 16-metre Hatteras Alewife . Originating from a long line of Martha’s Vineyard sailors, Captain Morgan knows the island’s beauty spots intimately, and spurned Florida and the Bahamas to return to his beloved New England.

“There are four harbours on the Vineyard, and each one of them is completely different,” explains Captain Morgan. “Menemsha is the old fishing village which is just beautiful, while Oak Bluffs is a funky party harbour – Saturday in Oak Bluffs harbour is just amazing. Vineyard Haven is more industrial – that’s where the steamships to and from the mainland stop. And if you’re on a yacht that’s more than 30 metres, Edgartown is where you’ll want to anchor – I think the onshore activities appeal more to the superyacht crowd who want to have a more upscale experience.”

After a jaunt to the islands, superyachts in search of familiarity can return to the coast of Cape Cod on the mainland. These cruising grounds favoured by the Kennedys offer something of a time capsule, being perfectly preserved since the region’s glamorous heyday. Many of the names that have peppered the annals of American history can also be found in the logbooks of Cape Cod’s historic hotels, and the demanding natures of such elite clientele has ensured that these resorts continue to uphold high reputations centuries later.

One New England hotel that has hosted names of note is Cape Cod’s Chatham Bars Inn. Both Henry Ford and William Rockefeller have visited this charming resort, draped in the region’s characteristic weathered shingle and white paint. Though the property has since expanded, its heritage is wholly embraced. It feels like I am stepping back in time as I walk beneath the rustic wooden beams and lantern-shaped chandeliers of the Main Inn, heading out to the veranda to take in timeless views of the North Atlantic with a cinnamon-spiced margarita in hand.

“We try to keep a sense of the history,” explains Beth Patkoske, Chatham’s senior marketing manager, as she points out the original concierge desk from 1914. Historical emblems are dotted throughout the Main Inn, from the antique 1869 music box in the South Lounge to a star-spangled Norman Rockwell painting in Stars, a fine-dining restaurant.

The Inn has all the archetypal components of this region. Summer days are spent sunbathing along the private beach, lined with swaying pampas grass and overlooking the waters of Aunt Lydias Cove. Bobbing close by, the hotel’s fleet of blue-hulled boats await guests for a day of sailing, fishing or whale watching offshore. The Inn’s Sacred Cod tavern also offers a taste of typical New England cuisine: buttery lobster rolls, rich clam chowders and sea-brined oysters are caught from local waters, complemented by seasonal produce from the resort’s private farmstead.

The views from Chatham, which overlook sandbars frequented by local seals, also have a significant history as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. JFK, who was raised 30 minutes away in Hyannis, campaigned to protect 17,000 hectares of Cape Cod’s landscape as a senator, signing the bill to create a national park shortly after becoming president. His aim was “to preserve the natural and historic values of a portion of Cape Cod for the inspiration and enjoyment of people all over the United States”.

It seems that JFK’s vision has come true – this entire stretch of coastline still offers a special kind of respite. New England is predicted to see another bumper superyacht season, and those yachts that do make the trip will find a destination that’s been refined by the tastes of yacht owners for centuries. The region continues to cater to this specific set of visitors – perhaps with the ambition that they too will be remembered as a part of New England’s nautical history.

New England

Composed of six beautiful states, New England is a dazzling region that is distinctly American. Home to a glorious seasonality, this area of the country offers a bounty of exquisite opportunities, from sailing alongside majestic whale pods to cycling the rustic paths of Martha’s Vineyard, New England is the quintessential land of plenty.

New England is a gorgeous region rich in beauty, history and culture that is sure to enrapture and enthrall no matter in which of the bountiful seasons travellers choose to visit. Widely considered the home of sailing in America, New England has a deep and rich maritime history as enthralling as its rugged landscapes.

City Escapes Boston is New England’s largest city and the capital of Massachusetts; a vibrant metropolis known for its glittering skyscrapers set against the backdrop of a bustling waterfront. Steeped in a rich colonial history preserved in Boston’s many museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston also provides an aesthetically pleasing cityscape - particularly in the autumn months when its many gardens and green spaces take on a fiery orange tint. The remainder of New England’s cities are significantly smaller but no less charming, including the shoreline cities of New Haven, Providence and Portland.

Beach Bliss Known as the ‘Ocean State’ for its spectacular stretches of glorious beach, Rhode Island is home to the famed yachting capital of Newport, whose sprawling mansions and prolific vineyards are renowned for their gorgeous clientele. The capital city of Providence is a chic, elegant destination for vibrant nightlife alongside numerous opportunities for indulgent pleasures. Massachusetts is also home to Cape Cod, whose magnificent sand bluffs and powdery beaches are notorious for their glitzy devotees. Equally as notorious are the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, both of which are famous for their attraction of both the young and old crowd of jet-setters for bucolic, restorative relaxation in an unimpeachable landscape of pristine beauty.

Skiing &   Snowboarding Heavily forested and perfect for skiing, Vermont is a picture-perfect winter holiday locale. Scattered with quaint mountain towns, this is the best area for premier skiing and snow sports in general. Also the center for boutique dairy and maple sugar industries, Vermont is the only state within the glorious New England region without a coastline, though it is home to the crystalline Lake Champlain. New Hampshire is also known as the ‘Granite State’ for its majestic mountain ranges which includes the dramatic Mount Washington, which makes it a great locale for skiing and other adventurous winter sports. Home to a variety of stunning lakes and pristine beaches, New Hampshire is the quiet sister among the flashy reputations that make up this area.

Regional Specialities Perhaps nowhere is more emblematic of the New England spirit than Maine, with its iconic striped lighthouses dotting rugged, rocky coastline. Possessing the longest coastline of its five sisters, Maine is a torrent of coves, estuaries, bays and diminutive islands that are a delight to the eye. Visitors to this area should also be sure to sample some of the rich delicacies of the area, such as steamed lobster and clam chowder, while shopping enthusiasts should make sure to purchase some of the exquisite local crafts and sample some of the local syrups, cheeses and chocolates.

New England Patriots NFL Draft 2024 guide: Picks, predictions and key needs

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA - AUGUST 27: Drake Maye #10 of the North Carolina Tar Heels rolls out against the Florida A&M Rattlers during the first half of their game at Kenan Memorial Stadium on August 27, 2022 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

“ The Beast ,” Dane Brugler’s expansive guide to the NFL Draft , is here.

The New England Patriots have the third pick in the NFL Draft when Round 1 begins April 25 in Detroit. The Patriots own eight total picks in the seven-round draft.

NFL Draft 2024 ‘The Beast’ Guide: Dane Brugler’s scouting reports and player rankings

About the Patriots

• Head coach: Jerod Mayo (first season with team) • Last year’s record: 4-13

The Patriots don’t want to begin the post-Bill Belichick era with a multiyear rebuild. But unless they hit big time on this draft class, that might be their reality. That’s because after a 4-13 season, the Patriots made very few additions in free agency, mostly re-signing their own players while adding a few depth pieces like receiver K.J. Osborn . Now, led by Mayo and de facto general manager Eliot Wolf, New England is looking at the franchise’s most important draft in decades.

Patriots’ key position needs

Quarterback: We have to start here. The Patriots watched as 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones imploded, forcing a need to restart at the game’s most important position, and prompting a trade that sent Jones to Jacksonville for a sixth-round pick. The Patriots would like to use the No. 3 pick on a quarterback — but they won’t get to pick which of the top three falls to them since Chicago at No. 1 and Washington at No. 2 are both expected to draft quarterbacks, too.

Wide receiver: The Patriots tried to sign Calvin Ridley in free agency, but a year after missing out to the Titans on DeAndre Hopkins , Ridley also chose Tennessee. Now the Pats are left with a plethora of No. 3 receivers (Osborn, Kendrick Bourne , Demario Douglas and JuJu Smith-Schuster ) but no game-breaking option for their next quarterback.

Patriots fail to land Calvin Ridley, so what are their WR options now?

Offensive tackle: The Patriots are entering the NFL Draft without a starting left tackle, an unenviable position considering they’ll likely have a rookie quarterback next season and uncertainty about who will block his blind side. The expectation is the Pats will use one of their first three picks on an offensive tackle who can immediately compete for the starting job on the left side.

March 19: Patriots mock draft 2.0 Graff nabs Drake Maye at No. 3, then goes all out to find him plenty of help on offense.

Patriots’ last five top picks

2023: CB Christian Gonzalez , No. 17 — It was a weird rookie season for Gonzalez. He looked like a future All-Pro, yet played only four games. Training camp and his first month, though, were so impressive that the Pats feel really good about his future despite Gonzalez missing most of the season following shoulder surgery.

2022: G Cole Strange , No. 29 — The surprise pick of the first round two years ago has been just OK in his first two NFL seasons. Optimism is high that the team’s new offense — led by Alex Van Pelt — better suits his skill set and could lead to a breakout. However, Strange is expected to miss the start of offseason practices as he recovers from a knee injury.

2021: QB Mac Jones , No. 15 — The Jones era is over in New England after trust eroded amid drastically declining play and changes to the offensive coaching staff in each of the quarterback’s three years with the team. Three years after drafting Jones, the Pats are back in the market for a rookie quarterback.

2020: S Kyle Dugger , No. 37 — Dugger and the Patriots have been trying to negotiate a long-term contract extension but haven’t yet, leading to the team placing the transition tag on him. They like his versatility on the back end of their defense, and it seems likely he’ll be on the field for them in 2024.

2019: WR N’Keal Harry , No. 32 — Harry was arguably the worst draft pick of the Belichick era, and he headlined one of the former coach’s worst draft classes.

The Opening Days of Trump’s First Criminal Trial

Here’s what has happened so far in the unprecedented proceedings against a former u.s. president..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions.

It’s the first day of the Trump trial and just walking out the door in my house. It’s a beautiful day, 6:11 AM. The thing that keeps running through my head is it’s kind of amazing that hundreds of jurors are going to show up at the Manhattan courthouse. And some of them are going to know what they’re there for — probably talking to their friends, their relatives about it.

Some of them are going to learn this morning talking to other jurors in line, asking what all the fuss is about. But I really do imagine that there’s going to be at least one potential juror who, headphones on, getting into court. Here they’re going to be there for the first criminal trial of Donald J. Trump. And just, I mean, how would you react?

[MUSIC PLAYING]

From “The New York Times,” I’m Michael Barbaro. This is “The Daily.” Today, what it’s been like inside the lower Manhattan courtroom, where political and legal history are being made? My colleague, Jonah Bromwich, on the opening days of the first criminal trial of a US President. It’s Thursday, April 18.

Is that his mic? Hi, there.

Hello. How are you?

I’m doing good.

OK. Thank you for coming in, Jonah —

Thank you for having me.

— in the middle of a trial. Can you just explain why you’re able to even be here?

Sure. So we happen to be off on Wednesdays during trial, so.

We being not “The New York Times,” but the courts.

That’s right.

Which is why we’re taping with you. And because we now have two full court days of this history-making trial now under our belts. And the thing about this trial that’s so interesting is that there are no cameras in the courtroom for the wider world.

There’s no audio recordings. So all we really have is and your eyes and your notebook, maybe your laptop. And so we’re hoping you can reconstruct for us the scene of the first two days of this trial and really the highlights.

Yeah, I’d be happy to. So on Monday morning, I left the subway. It’s before 7:00 AM. The sun is just rising over these grandiose court buildings in lower Manhattan.

I’m about to turn left onto Center Street. I’m right in front of the big municipal building.

And I turn onto Center Street. That’s where the courthouses are.

I’m crossing.

And I expected to see a big crowd. And it was even bigger than I had anticipated.

Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Now, I finally see the crowd.

You have camera banks. You have reporters. You have the beginnings of what will eventually become a protest. And you have this most New York thing, which is just a big crowd of people.

[CHUCKLES]: Who just know something is going on.

That’s right. And what they know is going on is, of course, the first trial of an American president.

All right, I’m passing the camera, folks. Camera, camera, camera, camera. Here we go.

Let’s start with Sharon Crowley live outside the courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

I want to get right to ABC’S Aaron Katersky who’s outside of the courthouse.

Robert Costa is following it outside the courthouse in Lower Manhattan. Bob, I saw the satellite trucks lined up all in a row. Good morning.

Talk to us how we got here exactly.

So this is the case that was brought by the Manhattan district attorney. So prosecutors have accused Donald Trump of covering up the actions of his former fixer, Michael Cohen, after Cohen paid hush money to Stormy Daniels. Stormy Daniels had a story about having had sex with Donald Trump, which Trump has always denied.

Cohen paid her money, and then Trump reimbursed Cohen. And prosecutors say that Trump essentially defrauded the American people because he hid this information that could have been very important for the election from those people when he reimbursed Cohen.

Right. And as I remember it, he also misrepresented what that reimbursement was. Claimed it was a legal fee when, in fact, it was just reimbursing Michael Cohen for a hush money payment.

Exactly, yeah. He definitely didn’t say reimbursement for hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. It’s a cover up case. It’s a case about hiding information you don’t want people to see.

Right. And of course, the context of all this is that it is in the middle of a presidential election. It’s 2016. Trump wants to keep this secret, prosecutors allege, so that the American public doesn’t know about it and potentially hold it against him.

Right. And prosecutors are telling a story about election interference. They’re saying that Trump interfered with an election. And Trump himself is also using the phrase “election interference.” But he’s painting the trial itself as election interference as he now runs again in 2024.

Fascinating.

And because we’re in Manhattan, and because the jury pool is going to be largely Democratic, and the judge is a Democrat, and the district attorney is a Democrat, Trump keeps claiming he cannot get a fair shake. This is democrat central. And in democrat central, Trump doesn’t have a chance.

OK. So, what happens once you actually enter the courthouse?

Outside, there’s all this fanfare. But inside, it’s a little bit business as usual. So I go up to the 15th floor, and I walk into the courtroom, and I sit down, and it’s the same old courtroom. And we’re sitting and waiting for the former president.

Around 9:30, Trump walks in. He looks thin. He looks a little tired, kind of slumping forward, as if to say with his body like let’s get this over with. Here we go.

The judge walks in a little bit after that. And we think we’re all set for the trial to start, but that’s not what happens here. And in fact, there are a series of legal arguments about what the trial is going to look like and what evidence is going to be allowed in.

So, for example, prosecutors ask that they be allowed to admit into evidence headlines from “The National Enquirer” that were attacks on Trump’s 2016 opponents — on Ted Cruz, on Marco Rubio, on Ben Carson.

Because prosecutors are in some sense putting Trump’s 2016 campaign on trial. These headlines are a big part of that because what prosecutors say they show is that Trump had this ongoing deal with “The National Enquirer.” And the publisher would promote him, and it would publish damaging stories about his opponents. And then crucially, it would protect Trump from negative stories. And that’s exactly what prosecutors say happened with Stormy Daniels. That “The National Enquirer” tipped Cohen off about Stormy Daniels trying to sell her story of having had sex with Donald Trump, which he denies. And that led to the hush money payment to her. So what prosecutors are doing overall with these headlines is establishing a pattern of conduct. And that conduct, they say, was an attempt to influence the election in Trump’s favor.

And the judge agrees. He’s going to admit this evidence. And this is a pretty big win for the prosecution. But even though they win that one, they’re not winning everything.

They lose some important arguments here. One of them was that after the Access Hollywood tape came out, there were allegations of sexual assault against Donald Trump. And you know this, Michael, because you reported two of them — two of the three in question at this very trial.

Prosecutors had hoped to talk about those during trial in front of the jury to show the jurors that the Trump campaign was really, really focused on pushing back against bad press in the wake of the Access Hollywood tape in which Trump seemed to describe sexual assault. That was a big problem for the campaign. Campaign did everything it could to push back, including against these allegations that surfaced in the wake of the tape.

But the judge, saying that the allegations are hearsay — that they’re based on the women’s stories — says absolutely not. That is incredibly prejudicial to the defendant.

Interesting.

And that Donald Trump would actually not get a fair trial were those allegations to be mentioned. And so he will not let those in. The jurors will not hear about them.

So this is a setback, of course, for the prosecution, a victory for Trump’s legal team.

It’s a setback. And it also just shows you how these pre-trial motions shape the context of the trial. Think of the trial as a venue like a theater or an athletic contest of some sort. And these pre-trial motions are about what gets led into the arena and what stays out. The sexual assault allegations — out. “The National Enquirer” headlines — in.

OK. And how is Trump sitting there at the defense table reacting to these pre-trial motion rulings from the judge?

Well, as I’ve just said, this is very important stuff for his trial.

Right. Hugely important.

But it’s all happening in legal language, and I’m decoding it for you. But if you were sitting there listening to it, you might get a little lost, and you might get a little bored. And Trump, who is not involved in these arguments, seems to fall asleep.

Seems to fall asleep — you’re seeing this with your own eyes.

What we’re seeing, overall, including our colleague, Maggie Haberman, who’s in the overflow room and has a direct view of Trump’s face — I’m sitting behind him in the courtroom, so I can’t see his face that well.

You guys are double teaming this.

That’s right. I’m sitting behind him, but Maggie is sitting in front of him. And what she sees is not only that his eyes are closed. That wouldn’t get you to he is asleep.

And we have to be really careful about reporting that he’s asleep, even if it seems like a frivolous thing. But what happens is that his head is dropping down to his chest, and then it’s snapping back up. So you’ve seen that, when a student —

I’ve done that.

(CHUCKLES) Yeah. We all kind of know that feeling of snapping awake suddenly. And we see the head motion, and it happens several times.

Lawyers kind of bothering him, not quite shaking him, but certainly trying to get his attention. And that head snapping motion, we felt confident enough to report that Trump fell asleep.

During his own criminal trial’s opening day.

Does someone eventually wake him up?

He wakes up. He wakes up. And in fact, in the afternoon, he’s much more animated. It’s almost as if he wants to be seen being very much awake.

Right. So once these pre-trial motions are ruled on and Trump is snapped back to attention, what happens?

Well, what happens in the courtroom is that the trial begins. The first trial of an American president is now in session. And what marks that beginning is jurors walking into the room one by one — many of them kind of craning their necks over at Donald Trump, giggling, raising their eyebrows at each other, filing into the room, and being sworn in by the judge. And that swearing in marks the official beginning of the trial.

The beginning is jury selection, and it’s often overlooked. It’s not dramatized in our kind of courtroom dramas in the same way. But it’s so important. It’s one of the most important parts of the case. Because whoever sits on the jury, these are the 12 people who are going to decide whether Trump is guilty or whether Trump is innocent.

So how does jury selection actually look and feel and go?

So, jury selection is a winnowing process. And in order to do that, you have to have these people go through a bunch of different hurdles. So the first hurdle is, after the judge describes the case, he asks the group — and there are just short of 100 of them — whether they can be fair and impartial. And says that if they can’t, they should leave. And more than half the group is instantly gone.

So after we do this big mass excusal, we’re left with the smaller group. And so now, jurors are getting called in smaller groups to the jury box. And what they’re going to do there is they’re going to answer this questionnaire.

And this part of the process is really conducted by the judge. The lawyers are involved. They’re listening, but they’re not yet asking questions of the jurors themselves.

And what’s on the questionnaire?

Well, it’s 42 questions. And the questions include, their education, their professional histories, their hobbies, what they like to do whether you’re a member of QAnon or Antifa.

Whether you’re far left or far right.

That’s right. Whether you’ve read “The Art of the Deal,” Trump’s book, which some prospective jurors had.

Right. It was a bestseller in its time.

That’s right. And some of it can be answered in yes/no questions, but some of it can be answered more at length. So some of the prospective jurors are going very, very fast. Yes, no, no, no, yes.

Right. Because this is an oral questionnaire.

That’s right. But some of them are taking their time. They’re expanding on their hobbies. So the potential juror in seat 3, for example, is talking about her hobbies. And she says some running, hiking. And then she said, I like to go to the club, and it got a huge laugh. And you get that kind of thing in jury selection, which is one of the reasons it’s so fun. It’s the height of normality in this situation that is anything but normal.

Right. The most banal answer possible delivered in front of the former president And current Republican nominee for president.

Well, that’s one of the fascinating parts about all this, right? is that they’re answering in front of Trump. And they’re answering questions about Trump in front of Trump. He doesn’t react all that much. But whenever someone says they’ve read “The Art of the Deal —” and there are a few of those — he kind of nods appreciatively, smiles. He likes that. It’s very clear. But because there are so many questions, this is taking forever, especially when people are choosing to answer and elaborate and digress.

This is when you fall asleep.

This Is. When I would have fallen asleep if I were a normal person.

And by the end of the day. Where does jury selection stand?

Well, the questionnaire is another device for shrinking that jury pool. And so the questionnaire has almost these little obstacles or roadblocks, including, in fact, a question that jurors have seen before — whether they would have any problem being fair and impartial?

Hmm. And they ask it again.

They’re asked it again. And they’re asked in this more individualized way. The judge is questioning them. They’re responding.

So, remember that woman who said she liked to go to the club got a big laugh. She reaches question 34. And question 34 reads, “Do you have any strong opinions or firmly-held beliefs about former President Donald Trump or the fact that he is a current candidate for president that would interfere with your ability to be a fair and impartial juror?” She said, yes, she does have an opinion that would prevent her from being fair and impartial. And she, too, is excused.

So that’s how it works. People answer the questionnaire, and they get excused in that way, or they have a scheduling conflict once they reach the jury box. And so to answer your question, Michael. At the end of day one, given all these problems with the questionnaire and the length of time it’s taken to respond to and people getting dismissed based on their answers, there is not a single juror seated for this trial.

And it’s starting to look like this is going to be a really hard case for which to find an impartial jury.

That’s the feeling in the room, yeah.

We’ll be right back.

So Jonah, let’s turn to day 2. What does jury selection look like on Tuesday?

So when the day begins, it looks almost exactly like it looked when the day ended on Monday. We’re still with the questionnaire, getting some interesting answers. But even though it feels like we’re going slow, we are going.

And so we’ve gone from about 100 people to now there’s about 24 the room there’s 18 the jury box. And by the time we hit lunch, all those people have answered all those questions, and we are ready for the next step in the process.

Voir dire. And what it is the heart of jury selection. This is the point where the lawyers themselves finally get to interview the jurors. And we get so much information from this moment because the lawyers ask questions based on what they want out of the jurors.

So the prosecution is asking all these different kinds of questions. The first round of wajir is done by a guy named Joshua Steinglass, a very experienced trial lawyer with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. And he’s providing all these hypotheticals. I’ll give you one example because I found this one really, really interesting. He provides a hypothetical about a man who wants his wife killed and essentially hires a hitman to do it. And what he asked the jurors is, if that case were before you, would you be able to see that the man who hired the hitman was a part of this crime?

And of course, what he’s really getting at is, can you accept that even though Michael Cohen, Trump’s fixer, made this payment, Trump is the guy who hired him to do it?

That’s right. If there are other people involved, will jurors still be able to see Donald Trump’s hands behind it all?

Fascinating. And what were some of the responses?

People mostly said, yes, we accept that. So that’s how the prosecution did it.

But the defense had a totally different method of voir dire. They were very focused on their client and people’s opinions about their client.

So what kind of questions do we get from them?

So the lawyer, Todd Blanche, is asking people, what do you make of President Trump? What do you think of President Trump?

And what are some of the responses to that?

Well, there’s this incredible exchange with one of the jurors who absolutely refuses to give his opinion of Donald Trump. They go back and forth and back and forth. And the juror keeps insisting you don’t need to know my opinion of him. All you need to know is that I’m going to be fair and impartial, like I said. And Blanch pushes, and the guy pushes back. And the only way the guy budges is he finally kind of confesses almost at the end that, yes, I am a Democrat, and that’s all we get.

And what ends up happening to this potential juror?

Believe it or not, he got dismissed.

[LAUGHS]: I can believe it. And of course, it’s worth saying that this guy and everybody else is being asked that question just feet from Trump himself.

That’s right. And you might think you were going to get a really kind of spicy, like, popcorn emoji-type exchange from that. But because these are now jurors who have said they can be fair and impartial, who, to some extent, want to be on this jury or at least wouldn’t mind being on this jury, they’re being very restrained.

Mostly, what they are emphasizing — much like that guy just described dis — is that they can be fair. They can be impartial. There’s one woman who gives this really remarkable answer.

She says, I thought about this last night. I stayed up all night. I couldn’t sleep, thinking about whether I could be fair. It’s really important to me, and I can.

What ends up happening to that particular juror?

She’s also dismissed. And she’s dismissed without any reason at all. The defense decides it doesn’t like her. It doesn’t want her on the jury. And they have a certain number of chances to just get rid of jurors — no questions asked.

Other jurors are getting dismissed for cause — I’m doing air quotes with my hands — which means that the lawyers have argued they actually revealed themselves through their answers or through old social media posts, which are brought up in the courtroom, to be either non-credible, meaning they’ve said they can be fair and they can’t, or somehow too biased to be on the jury.

Wait, can I just dial into that for a second? Are lawyers researching the jurors in real time going online and saying — I’m making this up — but Jonah Bromwich is a potential juror, and I’m going to go off into my little corner of the courtroom and Google everything you’ve ever said? Is that what’s happening in the room?

Yeah, there’s a whole profession dedicated to that. It’s called jury consultant, and they’re very good at finding information on people in a hurry. And it certainly looked as if they were in play.

Did a social media post end up getting anybody kicked off this jury?

Yes, there were posts from 2016 era internet. You’ll remember that time as a very heated one on the internet, Facebook memes are a big thing. And so there’s all kinds of lock him up type memes and rhetoric. And some of the potential jurors here have used those. And those jurors are dismissed for a reason.

So we have these two types of dismissals, right? We have these peremptory dismissals — no reason at all given. And we have for cause dismissals.

And the process is called jury selection. But you don’t actually get selected for a jury. The thing is to make it through all these obstacles.

You’re left over.

Right. And so when certain jurors are not dismissed, and they’ve made it through all these stages, by the end of the day, we have gone from zero juror seated to seven jurors who will be participating in Donald Trump’s trial.

Got it. And without going through all seven, just give us a little bit of a sketch of who so far is on this jury. What stands out?

Well, not that much stands out. So we’ve got four men. We’ve got three women. One lives on the Upper East Side. One lives in Chelsea. Obviously, they’re from all over Manhattan.

They have these kind of very normal hobbies like spending time with family and friends. They have somewhat anonymous jobs. We’ve got two lawyers. We’ve got someone who’s worked in sales.

So there’s not that much identifying information. And that’s not an accident . One of the things that often happens with jury selection, whether it be for Donald Trump or for anyone else, is the most interesting jurors — the jurors that kind of catch your attention during the process — they get picked off because they are being so interesting that they interest one or the other side in a negative way. And soon they’re excused. So most of the jurors who are actually seated —

Are not memorable.

Are not that memorable, save one particular juror.

OK. All right, I’ll bite. What do I need to know about that one particular juror?

So let me tell you about a prospective juror who we knew as 374, who will now be juror number five. She’s a middle school teacher from Harlem. And she said that she has friends who have really strong opinions about Trump, but she herself does not. And she insisted several times, I am not a political person.

And then she said this thing that made me quite surprised that the prosecution was fine with having her on the jury. She said, quote, “President Trump speaks his mind, and I’d rather that than someone who’s in office who you don’t know what they’re thinking.”

Hmm. So she expressed approval of President Trump.

Yeah, it was mild approval. But the thing is, especially for the defense in this trial, all you need is one juror. One juror can tie up deliberations in knots, and you can end with a hung jury. And this is actually something that I saw firsthand. In 2019, I was the foreperson on a jury.

How you like that?

Yeah. And the trial was really complicated, but I had thought while we were doing the trial, oh, this is going to be a really easy decision. I thought the defendant in that case was guilty. So we get into deliberations, but there’s this one juror who keeps gumming up the works every time we seem to be making progress, getting a conversation started.

This juror proverbially throws up his hands and says, I am not convicting. This man is innocent. And we talked and we talked. And as the foreperson, I was trying to use all my skills to mediate.

But any time we made any progress, this guy would blow it up. And long story short, hung jury — big victory for the defense lawyer. And we come out of the room. And she points at this juror. The guy —

The defense lawyer.

The defense lawyer points at this juror who blew everything up. And she said, I knew it. I knew I had my guy.

OK. I don’t want to read too much into what you said about that one juror. But should I read between the lines to think that if there’s a hung jury, you wonder if it might be that juror?

That’s what everyone in the courtroom is wondering not just about this juror, but about every single person who was selected. Is this the person who swings the case for me? Is this the person who swings the case against me?

These juries are so complex. It’s 12 people who don’t know each other at the start of the trial and, by the end of the trial, have seen each other every morning and are experiencing the same things, but are not allowed to have talked about the case until deliberations start. In that moment when deliberations start —

You’re going to learn a whole lot about each other.

That’s right. There’s this alchemical moment where suddenly, it all matters. Every personality selected matters. And that’s why jury selection is so important. And that’s why these last two days are actually one of the most important parts of this trial.

OK. So by my math, this trial will require five more jurors to get to 12. I know also they’re going to need to be alternates. But from what you’re saying what looked like a really uphill battle to get an impartial jury or a jury that said it could be impartial — and Trump was very doubtful one could be found — has turned out to not be so hard to find.

That’s right. And in fact, we went from thinking, oh, boy, this is going awfully slowly, to the judge himself saying we could be doing opening arguments as soon as Monday morning. And I think that highlights something that’s really fascinating both about this trial and about the jury selection process overall.

One of the things that lawyers have been arguing about is whether or not it’s important to figure out what jurors’ opinions about Donald Trump are. And the prosecution and, I think, the judge have really said, no, that’s not the key issue here. The key issue is not whether or not people have opinions about Donald Trump.

Right. Who doesn’t have an opinion about Donald Trump?

Exactly. They’re going to. Automatically, they’re going to. The question is whether or not they can be fair and impartial. And the seven people we already have seated, and presumably the five people that we’re going to get over the next few days and however many alternates — we expect six — are all going to have answered that question, not I hate Trump; I love Trump, but I can weigh in on the former president’s innocence or guilt, and I can do it as fairly as humanly possible.

Now, Trump is not happy about this. He said after court yesterday, quote, We have a highly conflicted judge, and he’s rushing this trial.” And I think that he is going to see these beats of the system the criminal justice system as it works on him as he is experiencing it as unfair. That is typically how he talks about it and how he views it.

But what he’s getting is what defendants get. This is the system in New York, in the United States. This is its answer to how do you pick a fair jury? Well, you ask people can you be fair? And you put them through this process, and the outcome is 12 people.

And so I think we’re going to see this over and over again in this trial. We’re going to see Trump experience the criminal justice system.

And its routines.

Yeah, openings, witnesses, evidence, closings. He’s going to go through all of it. And I think, at every turn, it makes sense to expect him to say, well, this is not fair. Well, the judge is doing something wrong. Well, the prosecutors are doing something wrong. Well, the jury is doing something wrong.

But at the end of the day, he’s going to be a defendant, and he’s going to sit, mostly silently if his lawyers can make him do that, and watch this process play itself out. So the system is going to try and treat him like any other defendant, even though, of course —

— he’s not. And he is going to fight back like no other defendant would, like no other defendant could. And that tension, him pushing against the criminal justice system as it strives to treat him, as it would anyone else, is going to be a defining quality of this trial.

Well, Jonah, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

Of course. Thanks so much for having me. [MUSIC PLAYING]

PS, have you ever fallen asleep in a trial?

I have not.

[CHUCKLES]:

Here’s what else you need to know today.

It’s clear the Israelis are making a decision to act. We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible and in a way that, as I said —

During a visit to Jerusalem on Wednesday, Britain’s foreign Secretary left little doubt that Israel would retaliate against Iran for last weekend’s aerial attack, despite pressure from the United States and Britain to stand down. The question now is what form that retaliation will take? “The Times” reports that Israel is weighing several options, including a direct strike on Iran, a cyber attack, or targeted assassinations. And —

Look, history judges us for what we do. This is a critical time right now, critical time on the world stage.

In a plan that could threaten his job, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson will put a series of foreign aid bills up for a vote this weekend. The bills, especially for aid to Ukraine, are strongly opposed by far-right House Republicans, at least two of whom have threatened to try to oust Johnson over the plan.

I can make a selfish decision and do something that’s different, but I’m doing here what I believe to be the right thing. I think providing lethal aid to Ukraine right now is critically important. I really do. I really — [MUSIC PLAYING]

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

yacht guide new england

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.
