School Sailing Club sets sail in 2024

yacht club sailing school

As the winter frost begins to thaw and signs of spring emerge, the Boothbay Region Sailing Club is already gearing up for another exhilarating season on the water. Despite the recent bouts of snow and sleet, middle and high school students from the Boothbay peninsula and beyond embraced the warmer weather last week, heralding the start of their sailing adventures.

On March 18, amidst the welcome embrace of sunshine and gentle breezes, students wasted no time in dusting off their sailing gear and preparing their vessels for the season ahead. Rigging their 420 boats and unveiling coach boats from their winter wraps, they anticipated the thrills and challenges that lay ahead.

Despite the brief return of wintry weather over the weekend, the sailors remained undeterred in their enthusiasm. With their sights set on the horizon and the first regatta looming on March 30 in Portland, they are poised to make the most of every opportunity to hone their skills and prepare for competition.

Head coach and Boothbay Region High School teacher Chris Liberti extends a warm invitation to prospective team members, encouraging those who may still be undecided to join a couple of practices before making their enrollment decision.

Boats and personal equipment, including dry suits, are provided to students. The fee to participate is $300 for the entire spring season. The Boothbay Region Sailing Club is dedicated to removing barriers to entry. Financial aid is available through the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, ensuring that every aspiring sailor can share the fun and camaraderie.

High school sailing is not an official Boothbay Region High School team sport; it is a club. The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Junior Program Foundation sponsors the club which competes in two leagues. One is the New England Scholastic Sailing Association (NESSA) which includes both public and private school teams and the Pen Bay League which has teams in coastal Maine. Chris Liberti has coached the local team for nine years. He described the club as providing students with an opportunity to sail in a competitive league. “The two leagues allow our team to compete against other teams with similar skill levels,” he said. “There is a regatta almost every weekend, so our team members have many opportunities to showcase their talents.”

The US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee has awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to five Chicago-area sailors for saving the life of a skipper who had fallen overboard. The medals were presented in an award ceremony on March 23 at Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in Wilmette, IL.

On Friday, September 8, 2023, the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club and the Wilmette Sailing School hosted the 2023 Soling United States National Championship amid a forecasted wind of up to 20 knots with 3 to 5 foot waves. The water temperature was 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

Skipper Dave Slaght, Bob Nickel, and Kent Smith on Soling USA 802 were sailing by-the-lee downwind when a wave hit them, causing an accidental jibe. Slaght, 73 years old, was violently flung backward to the leeward side of the boat where he landed on his back squarely on the oak tiller, severing the tiller where it attached to the rudder post.

He then continued over the side and into the waters of Lake Michigan where he stayed alongside the boat by hanging on, and his crew hanging onto him.

yacht club sailing school

In the aftermath, conditions on the boat were challenging for the remaining two crew members. The broken tiller made it impossible to steer, the spinnaker was flagging, and the main was catching wind and propelling the boat sideways.

The result was how the crew was unable to get into the proper position to rescue their skipper, who weighed some 220 pounds. After 10 minutes in the water, Slaght discovered his PFD was inadequate, and found it difficult to kick and hold on to the boat.

While his crew kept hold of him for 20 minutes, two Race Committee Zodiacs, crewed by John Kennedy, John Kiener, and Richard Traub, saw the vessel in distress and came to aid. The Zodiac with two crew tossed Slaght a line, pulled him to their boat, and together they pulled him on board. The victim completely recovered.

For their high degree of situational awareness, tenacity, and unhesitating action resulting in the rescue of a sailor in peril, US Sailing awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to the rescuing crews of Soling 802, Zodiac 1, and Zodiac 2.

Award recipients: • Bob Nickel • Kent Smith • John Kennedy • John Kiener • Richard Traub

Lessons Learned and Safety Reminders: • Always wear a lifejacket on the water. Adding leg/crotch holds it in place in the water. (Skipper reported that he was having a difficult time keeping his life jacket from riding up over his head) • Make sure there is a “throw rope” rescue bag on all safety boats. Consider also having a boarding ladder and/or Lifesling to assist in getting the victim out of the water. • Having a second “type 4” crew overboard “throwable” on board the boat, allows you to throw one, and have a second one for the person in the water to hang onto. • Evaluate, and re-evaluate weather conditions before sailing. • Practice emergency VHF radio communications.

The Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal is awarded to any person who rescues or endeavors to rescue any other person from drowning, shipwreck, or other perils at sea within the territorial waters of the United States, or as part of a sailboat race or voyage that originated or stopped in the U.S.

The medal was established in 1990 by friends of the late Mr. Hanson, an ocean-racing sailor from the Chesapeake Bay, with the purpose of recognizing significant accomplishments in seamanship and collecting case studies of rescues for analysis by the Safety at Sea Committee of US Sailing for use in educational and training programs.

Any individual or organization may submit a nomination for a Hanson Rescue Medal.

EAST SIDE — A day-long open house for local boaters of all experience levels this weekend in East Side aims to be an accessible, fun draw for newbies to the nautical world, organizers said.

Yachtapalooza takes place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Crowley’s Yacht Yard , 3434 E. 95th St.

The free, indoor event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It features free seminars and demonstrations, a pig roast, live music, a flea market Friday and Saturday and a three-day sale on nautical items from Boater’s Closet Friday-Sunday.

Organizers hope to draw 1,000 current and future mariners out to this year’s event, said Nick Fugate, sales manager at Crowley’s Yacht Yard.

Yachtapalooza will also include a boat showcase by Nautical Donations , Crowley’s charitable arm, featuring several rehabbed, budget-friendly boats for sale.

Proceeds from the boat sales will support nonprofits like the Chicago Maritime Society and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation, Fugate said.

The Chicago Boat Show dropped its sailing portion in recent years and is planning a move to the suburbs next year , so this weekend “is probably the closest thing to a sailboat show that we’ve got in Chicago,” said Charles Szymanski, a Yachtapalooza organizer and president of the nonprofit Rainbow Races .

With a few dozen vendors and free seminars on topics like marine pumps and toilets, splicing line and rope, and applying epoxy and varnish, Yachtapalooza offers “anything you would need” to maintain a boat, Fugate said.

The seminars give attendees “the chance to use the products, put their hands on them and feel them, and learn a little more than watching a powerpoint on a screen,” he said.

The event is “the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to get into sailing, [with] questions about sailing or [wanting] to check out a sailboat for the first time,” Szymanski said.

yacht club sailing school

Rainbow Races is one of Yachtapalooza’s featured vendors, and its members will host one of the day’s seminars. The group aims to erase barriers marginalized groups may face in getting into sailing, Szymanski said.

It’s the only U.S. Sailing-sanctioned, LGBTQ+ sailing school in the country, and the only LGBTQ+ sailing organization in the Midwest, he said.

Rainbow Races’ first day of sailing school begins May 18. The group is offering a $50 early-bird discount on sailing classes through the end of April with the discount code “hydra50.” To register, click here .

The sailing world struggles with homophobia, misogyny, elitism and other forms of discrimination prevalent in other sports, Szymanski said. Rainbow Races creates a safe community around the sport which tries to counter those problems, he said.

Despite its issues, due to the collaborative nature of sailing, it’s also “probably the most friendly sports arena I’ve experienced,” Szymanski said.

“Sailing is a true team sport,” he said. “You have to trust your crewmates with your life, and you also have to support each other.

“Sailors are aware if we don’t evolve, we die … If the wind changes, you have to change with it.”

yacht club sailing school

Chicago’s sailing community is robust, particularly with groups like the Park District, local yacht clubs and Rainbow Races encouraging new people to explore the sport, Fugate said.

But with a massive lake as Chicago’s backyard and “a very strong maritime history” in the city, the community could definitely stand to grow, Szymanski said.

Yachtapalooza is a free “casual meeting of the minds” that can help spread the joy of sailing and boating and change a misperception that the community is only for the ultra-rich, Szymanski said.

Million-dollar yachts “are great to look at and to dream about, but when you get down to it, Chicago is a blue-collar city,” Szymanski said. “A lot of the folks trying to buy boats are probably younger and more [budget-conscious]. It makes this a really unique opportunity to bring people in, in a very casual, unencumbered way.”

Milwaukee Yacht Club Worth $2.28 Million

But is it really the oldest yacht club on Lake Michigan?

Milwaukee Yacht Club. Photo taken March 27, 2024 by Graham Kilmer.

Milwaukee Yacht Club. Photo by Graham Kilmer.

On February 26th, 1967, Milwaukee County Executive John Doyne  and the officers of the Milwaukee Yacht Club sank silver shovels into the sandy soil of McKinley Park to break ground for a new clubhouse. Back on November 23rd, 1943, at the height of World War II, the original 1896 frame building located there had burned down to its pilings. At the time, the United States Navy took precedence over private sailing clubs when it came to requisitioning construction supplies, so, in 1945, the members assembled a “temporary” clubhouse from materials they could scratch together until a new home could be built. Now, nearly a quarter-century later, at last construction could begin.

But as the days of the war economy were long over, why did it take until 1967 for a permanent home to be built?

A Decades-Long Battle Goes to Supreme Court — Twice

In 1887 the city created Flushing Tunnel Park (now McKinley Park) as part of a sanitary improvement designed to pump Lake Michigan water into the polluted Milwaukee River , discharging it just downstream from the North Avenue Dam, in an area that abounded with tanneries and other heavy industrial uses. The idea was that the water would dilute and flush the noxious effluvia that emanated from the factories into the lake. It was realized that the channel that led to the pumping station (now Colectivo Lakefront) could also serve as a harbor for small vessels such as personal sailboats.

In 1907 it was determined that such filled lakebed land “was and had been the property of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, and not the City of Milwaukee.” (Railroads were notorious land-grabbers.) In 1913, the railroad quit-claimed the property to the city “upon condition that it be maintained by the city at all times for park purposes.” If not, the land would revert to the railroad.

Thus, matters stood for a generation until 1936 when, in an early example of intergovernmental consolidation, voters approved a referendum to transfer all city park property to the county to create a unified park system. Hundreds of acres, including the Yacht Club site were conveyed to the county on November 12th, 1936.

Shortly after the 1943 fire the county sought to evict the yacht club. This resulted in litigation and a number of appeals that went on for years. The walls of the temporary clubhouse echoed with the laments of members: What could be worse? To have to scuttle one’s vessel or be obliged to join the South Shore Yacht Club? Either option would be unthinkable. The club claimed it owned the site due to adverse possession, hiring Louis Quarles to make their case. This claim was rejected in a 1950 Supreme Court decision, which sent the matter back to the lower court. Then, in 1951, the court again settled some technical issues in the case, which at this time involved Milwaukee County as appellant, versus the City of Milwaukee as defendant and the Milwaukee Yacht Club as respondent. The county was granted ownership of the land, which it retains to this day. Even so, it took another 16 years to get around to building the new facility.

A Taxable Building on Tax-Exempt Land

In what may be a unique situation, we have before us a privately owned building (taxable) sited on publicly owned land (non-taxable). The 2-story brick clubhouse of 9,500 square feet features a number of amenities for its members, according to its website .

They include:

  • The main dining room overlooking the harbor.
  • Private east-facing banquet room known as the Cove.
  • Conference room known as the Library.
  • Expansive Main Bar with seating and private wine lockers.
  • Lounge with a fireplace.
  • Outdoor patio with seating overlooking the harbor.
  • Wrap-around deck with bistro seating overlooking the grounds.
  • The “Boatique”

There is also a 21st century outdoor pool and other improvements to the facility, including a large crane to hoist boats in and out of the water. Plans are afoot to replace the fixed docks with floating docks, and the Parks Department is making improvements to the flushing channel walls in conjunction with the club.

Get a daily rundown of the Milwaukee stories ']);" action='https://urbanmilwaukee.us5.list-manage.com/subscribe/post?u=47fecf5ef8bf9b1436043c330&id=fa7240869f'> The “temporary” clubhouse was retained after the current clubhouse was built in 1967. It is now the Boathouse, the Dockmaster’s office, event and classroom space as well as locker rooms for the pool and hot tub.

The City assesses the improvements at $2,288,000, while the exempt land is not valued. Property tax of $53,995.76 is current on the installment payment plan. Additionally, the County receives $68,000 in annual rent from the club. This payment more than offsets the sum the county would have received as its portion of the tax on the land. The 25-year contract was renewed in 2018 at the current rate.

The Bottom Line

The Club’s IRS Form 990 for the year 2022 shows total assets of $3,449,892 (2021: $1,999,192) and total liabilities of $2,259,675 (2021: $453,396) for a net asset of $1,190,217 (2021: $1,545,796). Revenues were $1,754,339 (2021: $2,271,859) and expenses were $2,109,918 (2021: $1,631,130) for a net income of -$355,597 (2021: +$640,729).

Income from public use of the club facilities was $203,666 (2021: $157,860). The highest paid employee is club manager Matt Michael , who earned $110,746 (2021: $108,537).

Oldest Active Yacht Club on Lake Michigan?

There is something about the water that leads to tall tales, from the mermaids and sirens of antiquity to a fisherman’s estimate of the size of the musky that got away from him on Potato Lake one summer.

The clearheaded landlubbers at the Milwaukee County Historical Society , unintoxicated by the romance of the sea, report that The Milwaukee Yacht Club was indeed organized in 1871 by 25 Milwaukeeans, “but the organization died out by 1878. It revived in 1884 but again was short-lived.” The current Milwaukee Yacht Club was organized in 1894. However, in 1945, the original Milwaukee Yacht Club was once again revived. The defunct club then merged with the current club, thus giving it rights to claim to be the oldest operating yacht club on Lake Michigan.

  • Taxes: 2023 $53,995.76. Payments current on installment plan

UW dock renovations pose threat to 75-year sailing tradition, yacht club students say

by Denise Whitaker, KOMO News Reporter

SEATTLE — Students in the Washington Yacht Club (WYC) accuse the University of Washington (UW) of working to stop a 75-year history of teaching students to sail.

Those students told KOMO News that the UW’s plans to renovate the docks near Husky Stadium will eliminate the docks they use to store their 70 boats, thus taking away their ability to teach students to sail.

“It would really mean, like a death blow to the community,” said Renee Chien, the current Rear Commodore of WYC.

The U.W. has plans to repair and remove docks. The total dock space will be reduced by 4,000 square feet.

“And the university has actually given us a statement as of March that we will no longer be able to keep beyond one boat on the dock,” said Chien.

UW told KOMO News that the club only needs to move some of the club's boats short term.

“We have up to 75 boats. We’ve got everything from sailboats up to a 44-foot ocean-going vessel and everything in between,” said William Rae, another member of WYC.

Once the renovation is completed in 2025, the university told KOMO that UW recreation will no longer maintain dock storage space, so the WYC and the Union Bay Rowing Club would each be able to maintain just one boat at the dock.

“It would mean the loss of something that I have poured my heart and soul into,” said Chien. “And I feel like that is the case for most people that I work with in the WYC, who like are united by their common love of sailing.”

Chien told KOMO she just joined the WYC in November, to learn to sail and loves it so much, she’s already been out sailing 22 of the past 23 days.

“I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan and as an international student, I wouldn’t have felt like my roots were planted firmly anywhere. I thought maybe I would stay in Seattle maybe I wouldn’t, but I didn’t feel attached and it was really because of sailing and because of my access to the water and this newfound connection that I have with the Puget Sound that I feel like I would like to stay here to keep sailing and keep building the community here,” explained Chien.

Perhaps the best part of getting out on one of the 70 boats to learn to sail, is the price. Students pay just $39 per quarter.

“And if we lose that that’s a huge loss to people being able to enter into a sport that traditionally has such a high barrier,” said Rae.

Sailing lessons in Seattle cost several hundred dollars a month.

“We’re pretty unique, definitely in the Pacific Northwest, and really for student-run organizations we believe we're unique in the country,” said Rae.

UW's tradition of sailgating right outside Husky Stadium is another unique Pacific Northwest tradition and some accuse the University of putting profits from events like this over student benefit.

The renovation plan calls for adding new docks for large sailgating boats plus greater access for students and the public to rent kayaks and canoes.

“And we just want to emphasize that kayak rentals are $19 per hour our quarterly membership is $39 a quarter,” said Chien.

UW told KOMO that they are prioritizing Rec Clubs with the new waterfront plan, to expand student participation.

Construction on the docks and beach at the UW is scheduled to start in January and UW told KOMO that they are still working with the WYC through this process.

“Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers, we put our heart”

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

fitzroy zefira

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo
