Toum Tiou Cruise

Cruise company: Compagnie Fluviale du Mékong

Cruise type: Midrange, Sharing, 10 cabins

Destinations: Vietnam - Cambodia

Toum Tiou’s steel hull and sleek low draft make it the only true vessel that sails the Mekong. Toum Tiou and its sister vessel, Toum Tiou II, are the only ships which can sail from the Siem Reap pier to Saigon’s harbor. With other vessels, passengers have to disembark mid-river and continue on land. Moreover, Toum Tiou’s low draft allows it access to the remotest of villages and to gently hug the river line, affording passengers priceless views of people, flora and fauna – hardly touched by modernity. Toum Tiou was custom built for passenger privacy, intimacy, comfort and safety.

Full Itinerary

Toum Tiou Cruise 6 days Phnom Penh to Saigon

Day 1: phnom penh - kampong tralach.

The Toum Tiou II is all revved up, spruced up, and ready for you at the Phnom Penh Port.  Enjoy a sumptuous lunch as the ship cruises to Kampong Tralach to visit its wonderful Vihara.  To reach this magnificent edifice, we cross Kampong Tralach Krom village along a small road perpendicular to the river, walk along some gorgeous stretches of emerald rice paddy as we leave the river behind. We return to Toum Tiou II. We cruise gently towards Koh Chen (Chinese island). A mouth-watering dinner is served and the cruise ship moors overnight.

Day 2: Koh Chen/Oudong – Phnom Penh – Border

We arrive at Kôh Chen, a small village whose inhabitants specialize in silver and copper smiting. They produce ornamental items, including delicately engraved tropical fruit which are used in traditional ceremonies or at weddings. You will be able to catch a glimpse of the distant hills of Cambodia's ancient capital – Oudong – and its royal stupas when you are a few kilometers away from the ferry.  We return to the Toum Tiou II. We cruise towards Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, while lunch is served onboard. Upon arrival in Phnom Penh, you are free to explore this vibrant city. Chau Doc is a remote border town and cultural melting pot of Chinese, Cham and Khmer communities. The city is situated at the intersection of a tributary linking the Bassac and the Mekong River. What Chau Doc lacks in size, it makes up in colours. Lots of it. Vivid and vibrant. Even its store fronts are painted in warm pastel shades. We are taken on a short panoramic tour of the city. This is the perfect opportunity to feel the throbbing vibration of the local markets. The Toum Tiou II then cruises towards Sa Dec. Toum Tiou II moors overnight.

We visit a typical local dwelling and a show room of traditional farming tools. Vinh Long – Vietnamese for Majestic Dragon- sits merrily in the middle of the delta, protected by the two arms of the Mekong. The soil of Vinh Long is enriched by silt deposits, making it ideal for growing mandarins and other citrus fruits.  Life here centers on water. Houses are hoisted precariously on stilts that are planted onto the banks of the river. Hawkers peddle knick knacks from boats. Hundreds of small boats travel the river daily. The unbridled warmth of the locals makes this a destination par excellence. Passengers re-embark the Toum Tiou II which then cruises for My Tho. A delectable dinner is served during navigation. In the evening, you are entertained by the graceful and beguiling ‘Apsara Dance’, whilst you enjoy dinner onboard.

Day 6: Phnom Penh to Kampong Tralach

Breakfast is served before a morning at leisure. We depart Phnom Penh at 11.30am, with lunch served en route to Kampong Tralach. We visit the spectacular Wat Kampong Tralach Leu Pagoda before returning to the ship. Dinner is served onboard and the ship moors overnight.

Day 7: Kampong Chhnang to Chnok Tru

At dawn, the ship sails for the port of Kampong Chhnang. Located some 56 miles northeast of Phnom Penh, the town of Kampong Chhnang is one of the largest fishing ports on the Tonlé Sap. It is famous for its fish farms and pottery. Not to be overlooked either are the products of the Thnot tree - a mellow-tasting, caramel-coloured sugar sold in large cakes and palm wine. The tree grows abundantly in the area and is one of Cambodia’s national symbols.

Day 8: Chnok Tru to Siem Reap

The ship departs early in the morning, with plenty of time for you to pack your bags and relax as the ship navigates its way across the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. We arrive at Phnom Krom Pier, approximately 5 miles from Siem Reap.

  5.0 - Excellent

What a fabulous trip! This 8 day trip from Saigon to Siem Reap is just wonderful. The crew are dedicated, friendly, thoughtful and just so caring.  The food, especially the lunches and dinners are outstanding. The cabins are cozy, have room to store luggage and fit every need. The ensuite bathrooms are fine too. The sundeck, where you spend most time on board is spacious, has great views of the river and the 24/7 tea and coffee is very welcome, as is the bar, of course!  Our guide Mimea is the best in the world. She was full of information, is tireless, thoughtful, charming, funny and so endearing. She made our trip an educational adventure.  The excursions were so well researched. We visited small industries, villages, temples, islands, small waterways and all the while Mimea was with us and talking, explaining and sharing her wealth of information.  How lucky we are to have had such an experience of Vietnam and Cambodia.

What travelers love Toum Tiou Cruise

We are small and intimate . Passengers get a "family-type" feel

As the boats are small, the ships are able to enter smaller parts of the river and enter into places that other ships can't

As the ship are small , they are able to navigate right through the Gao canal and dock at Saigon port , other ships are too big and they stop at My Tho and the passengers need to take a bus to Saigon

The same for Siem Reap , during high water the ship is able to dock at Siem Reap port

As our ships are tastefully made and designed and wooden feel and also authentic, the passengers will not feel that they are "distant" from the village people they are visiting. There is not a huge gulf between the passengers and the local people .

Built in 2002, Toum Tiou Cruise is proudly the first Cambodian cruise boat to serve international standard accommodation on Mekong River. The vessel consists of 10 private double rooms on the main and upper deck, which are furnished with air-conditioner, comfy bed, private shower, and deccent other amenities. Offering incredible Mekong expedition connecting Siem Reap and Saigon, Toum Tiou Cruise, with its comfort in mind as well as beautiful local style, delivers you a pleasantly home-like stay as well as a lot of fascinating experiences en route.

Good - Small Group

We came to the Mekong Delta in December 2013. The staff was great and it was nice to stay in a roomy space. We went to explore many exciting places. Furthermore, they have wonderful tours of their own. It was so great for several days enjoy the fresh and peaceful air of the Mekong Delta. It was so fascinating to explore the local country.

Beatriz

Good - Couple

It was our first trip to Vietnam. I can say it was a delightful relief from the noise of the city. The place is a gem. Our accommodation is clean and nice decorated with large window and river view. Both of us were satisfied with the excellent food. Vietnamese dishes were at a very reasonable price and matching fresh fruit. The staff was friendly and attentive. The tours were very enjoyable. This is a good getaway for relaxing and gain background about Asian culture.

Mr.Vicky

Good - Family with children

We did the Mekong Delta travel on this boat. My family all really took pleasure in it. The service was truly excellent, though the staff could improve on their English more as it was rather hard to communicate with them sometimes. The food was abundant and the portions were just right. The experience was nice and I would recommend it to anyone that was looking for a relaxing time. I do think it's a bit on the pricier side for Vietnam.

RV Toum Tiou II Review

Review of rv toum tiou ii.

RV Toum Tiou II cruises allow international travellers to discover Indochina along Mekong River. The riverboat differs from other Mekong river cruise ships as she is able to provide an authentic cruising experience with departures from homeports Siem Reap to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) . Besides CroisiEurope (via its subsidiary company Compagnie Fluviale du Mekong), the riverboat is also operated under charter by G Adventures (USA).

Not only can travellers sail the entire trip on the river, but they also do cruising in close proximity to the river line. This way they are allowed to see an unobstructed view of the rustic existence of the local people. Most Mekong cruise ships are large and not custom-built for such intimate navigation. Toum Tiou 2 offers spectacular views of the river's flora and fauna and diverse day-to-day life of the inhabitants and cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia.

RV Toum Tiou II cruise ship, Mekong River, Cambodia-Vietnam

The 14 cabins on Toum Tiou II are all sized 12 m2 (129 ft2). All staterooms are fitted with elegant, colonial style furniture with wood finishes and with large windows (non-opening). All cruise cabins face the river and have two beds that can be joined to form one. Stateroom amenities include air-conditioning, private bathroom with shower, hairdryer, safe, dresser, hi-fi system, bathrobes, towels, complimentary tea, and coffee.

Shipboard facilities

Onboard public areas include a panoramic, open restaurant that is matchless on the Mekong River. A spacious sun deck adds to the facilities. The ship's kitchen is famous for the variety of Asian food and its smiley cooks. The vessel's equipment contains a filtration/chlorination system for water safety.

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All companies and their fleets are listed there.

He answered the same questions repeatedly from those of us who weren't paying attention with incredible patience! He ensured we arrived at each location on time and in good condition. He got along incredibly well with the entire ship's crew and passengers. Kim went above and above to provide us with all extras. Every day, Kim made himself available to give us informal lessons about the area's history, geography, and culture during his own "downtime" while we were sailing and when our visitors were taking a nap. He purchased strange items for us while taking us on walks through the marketplaces so we could all sample them. He aided us with shopping and communicating with the locals. He is an excellent guide! Less

We took the Mekong River Cruise and were dropped at the bee hive farm and pagodas,... and the Apsara show onboard was interesting. We bought many local products as gifts, that's truly valuable. We also had a sampan ride, which was different and unique.

This journey was impressive. We had a lot of exciting experiences. The boat was also lovely, the food was delicious, and the staff was kind and polite; they always smiled at us and accepted all our requirements. The traditional apsara show was terrific; we were very impressed with that!

shore excursions in Vietnam were with vendors where it was expected that money be spent, and that the guide recieve a tip, even though it was clear that the guide was receiving a fee for bringing the group

We had a fantastic holiday with many fabulous memories.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

toum tiou ii riverboat

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

toum tiou ii riverboat

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

toum tiou ii riverboat

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

toum tiou ii riverboat

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

toum tiou ii riverboat

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

toum tiou ii riverboat

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

toum tiou ii riverboat

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
