OCEAN VICTORY yacht was built in Italy by the Fincantieri shipyard and delivered to her owner in 2014.

She ranks 12th on the list of the world’s largest yachts, with a length of 140 meters (459 ft).

Like many other superyachts in her size category, she currently sails under the Cayman Islands flag.

The OCEAN VICTORY yacht was designed by Alberto Pinto, a well-known photographer and interior designer from Paris, France. Onboard there is room for 26 guests in 13 generously designed suites.

A crew of 56 is responsible for the service, maintenance, and maneuvering of OCEAN VICTORY.

In addition to a spa, there is also a beauty salon, a fitness room, and an onboard cinema available for the enjoyment of the guests.

The elevator system allows guests and crew to move quickly and comfortably between the seven decks.

Specifications

The OCEAN VICTORY yacht is powered by two MTU marine engines with nearly 7,000 hp, enabling the yacht to reach top speeds of up to 25 knots. At a cruising speed of 18 knots, her range is 5,000 nautical miles.

Thanks to her state-of-the-art at-anchor stabilizers, OCEAN VICTORY offers comfortable cruising even during rough seas.

Her hull is made of steel, her superstructure of aluminum, and her many decks were constructed from more than 2,000 square meters of high-end teak.

The exterior of the superyacht was created by the world-renowned designer and architect Espen Øino, who is based in Monaco.

OCEAN VICTORY has a helipad with a lift that allows aircraft to be transported to an internal helicopter hangar.

There is also a floodable dock on board that can hold vessels up to 14 meters long.

The yacht has a spacious beach club, an underwater observation room, and six swimming pools distributed across the different decks.

Guest entertainment onboard the OCEAN VICTORY is ensured in the form of jet skis, water skis, sea bobs, and snorkeling equipment which are available for the guests at any time. 

The owner of the OCEAN VICTORY paid an estimated price of US $300 million for this luxury yacht. The annual running costs amount to US $25 – 30 million, depending on use.

Ocean Victory: How this new, small ship is a game changer for Alaska cruises

When it comes to cruising in Alaska, there have long been just two distinct options: the big ocean liners that cruise-averse travelers love to hate and the small ships that cater to outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure over amenities.

I've generally avoided both, being put off by the crowds and mass-market feel of traditional ocean liners and too spoiled by years of luxury travel to be tempted by the more basic adventure ships.

Enter Ocean Victory, which merges luxury and adventure for an experience that is as unique to Alaska's waterways as its pointy, submarine-looking X-bow nose. The new 186-passenger expedition ship is operated during the summer Alaska cruise season by American Queen Voyages, a company best known for its red paddle-wheelers that ply America's rivers.

Ocean Victory marks the company's first foray into Alaska and expedition cruising. The itineraries are designed to appeal to a younger demographic than AQV's more senior-oriented river, Great Lakes and coastal cruising trips.

Judging from the reactions of passengers and travel advisors on its inaugural sailing, the ship is going to be a huge hit. On its face, the blue and white polar-class vessel radiates pure adventure. It features retractable, over-the-water observation decks that offer in-your-face wildlife viewing and special lower deck doors and a fold-out platform for launching kayak and Zodiac expeditions. The ship is so hardy it will spend winters sailing Antarctica for Albatros Expeditions.

Inside, the contemporary boutique-hotel vibe says pure comfort. Balcony cabins and spacious suites come equipped with large televisions, luxury bedding and heated bathroom floors. The ship is laden with amenities, including a small spa, fitness center, infinity pool, two outdoor hot tubs, two dining areas and three bars.

I was hooked the minute I boarded the vessel for a three-day preview sailing to showcase the new ship to travel advisors and other industry VIPs as it made its way from Bellingham, Washington, to Vancouver, British Columbia. I ended up liking it so much that I cast aside other obligations to stay on board for its 10-day maiden sailing through Alaska's lesser-traveled passages, islands and remote towns.

My only regret: not being able to find an excuse to stay on even longer.

Immersive experiences ashore

Ocean Victory offers what AQV founder John Waggoner calls "encounter" travel, or "getting deeply immersive in things through experiences," with its adventure offerings and itinerary that sails into lesser-traveled areas of southeast Alaska.

Setting out from Vancouver to Sitka, Alaska, the ship spent the first two days at sea, veering off from Canada's more widely traveled Inside Passage. Instead, it sailed through the narrower Fiordland Conservancy area and past the ghost town of Butedale, British Columbia, known for its proximity to a concentration of white-furred black bears known as spirit bears.

My shipmates and I made good use of the scopes and binoculars the ship provides in guest cabins and across the ship to search for wildlife. Though we weren't lucky enough to spot one of the rare bears, over the course of our sailing we saw whales, bears, sea lions, otters, moose and bald eagles — both from the ship and from the water.

Our first stop was Ketchikan, Alaska, the only port on Ocean Victory's itinerary that's also a regular stop for the big cruise ships. We docked a few miles from the heart of town, away from the larger vessels, but Ocean Victory provided plenty of shuttles, as well as options for a free, traditional city highlights tour. Passengers could also pay extra for more culture- and culinary-focused excursions.

After that, the itinerary alternated between expedition days and stops at lesser-visited ports, such as Alaska's Wrangell Island, population 2,500.

There, I passed on the group excursions, opting instead to wander the streets and then join AQV's culinary ambassador Regina Charbonneau for an informal "pub crawl" and a fish-and-chips lunch at what appeared to be the town's only, and very popular, diner. She was on board to start developing regionally focused menus as well as some culinary-focused excursions, which she said will include local diners and dive bars.

As a fellow writer and I wandered the main street, which was delightfully devoid of souvenir shops, we heard an odd, and quite loud, water-like sound coming from the sky.

"Oh, that's the raven," said Zak's Cafe owner Catherine George-Byrd, who had emerged to see if she could help the two startled visitors on Wrangell's otherwise empty main street. "It's imitating dripping water. Some imitate cats, others crying babies."

I didn't expect to be learning about local wildlife from a friendly diner owner, but that's just the kind of random encounter I came to expect on Ocean Victory. I likely would not have experienced this type of local interaction while wandering the souvenir and jewelry stores that dot the streets of the larger ports frequented by the big cruise lines.

For instance, in Kake, Alaska, population 500, the town mayor greeted us on arrival. We saw the world's tallest totem pole and went to the community gym to meet residents committed to keeping their indigenous Tlingit culture alive. Their children performed traditional dances and a woodcarver taught us how totem poles are made. A bonus: A local World War II veteran was there, and he and a fellow veteran sailing on Ocean Victory sang "The Marines' Hymn" together.

In Petersburg, Alaska, we hopped aboard the 13-passenger Point Retreat jet boat operated by a father-son team, Rob and Teagen Schwartz, who promised to get us closer to the LeConte Glacier than any of the other small boats in the town, which gets regular visits from small adventure ships but not the larger ocean liners.

On the way, they took us on a detour along the coast to see whales and bears – a route that also took us past Bootleg Creek, where Rob said his great-grandfather used to buy moonshine from a man who in 1929 was found "deader than a doornail, curled up with a bottle."

Ultimately, they kept true to their word, navigating for nearly two hours through dense fields of breathtaking blue and white icebergs while regaling us with stories of life in the Last Frontier.

Sea days with extra adventure

Every other day, Ocean Victory anchored in remote passages and fjords, where we spent the day exploring from the ship's fleets of kayaks and Zodiacs. Sea days on big ships are full of trivia contests, poker games and line dance lessons; on this small ship, they offered extra adventure.

While Ocean Victory is the first adventure offering from AQV, the expedition team and onboard naturalists are seasoned experts, having collectively sailed hundreds of Alaska and polar cruises.

The naturalists taught us how sea otters carry their young, pulled glacier ice onto the Zodiacs to show off the pieces' unique formations and gave informed narratives about the flora, fauna and geology of our surroundings. They were also expert spotters, helping us find everything from starfish to moose, bears and mountain goats on the surrounding coasts and cliffs.

The company has also teamed up with founder John Waggoner's alma mater, California Polytechnic State University, as well as whale and wildlife experts from the Sound Science Research Collective and the Sitka Sound Science Center, who will conduct whale and marine biology research from the ship.

Between the water outings on expedition days, two recent graduates of Cal Poly gave fun hands-on lessons about our surroundings. We peered through microscopes at sea algae, watched them make miniature glaciers that model ice floes and learned about everything from whale snot to regional plants and wildlife from the expedition team's naturalists. I was engaged and involved, not falling asleep in the back of a huge ship's theater.

Casual luxury on board

Where Ocean Victory really sets itself apart from traditional adventure operators is with the onboard experience. Most adventure ships in Alaska are quite basic, with few onboard amenities other than a simple dining hall and lounge and cabins featuring fixed twin or queen beds and picture windows. Ocean Victory ups the ante, offering the type of public spaces and accommodations you would expect to find on luxury river and yacht cruises.

The cabins are spacious, even by ocean liner standards, and offer all the amenities of a luxury hotel. Most have private balconies; some feature picture windows or French balconies, and a few are suites with separate living and sleeping areas. My deluxe balcony cabin featured a queen-size bed, sitting area with a small couch and a desk that offered a comfortable working space. The Wi-Fi worked well except when we anchored in the remote Gut Bay, Alaska.

My favorite spot was Deck 8, which has a large glass-walled lounge with a bar and a variety of tables and comfortable chairs, as well as a large outdoor observation deck. It was great for reading or relaxing and taking in the sweeping views.

The deck's casual-dining area with indoor and outdoor seating will be the perfect spot for barbecues and other informal meals. Unfortunately, it was not operating on the first sailing (never mind that it was still too cold for outdoor dining). The weather was perfect for relaxing in the Deck 7 hot tubs under the stars, even if the weather didn't allow a dip in the infinity pool.

Deck 5 is the main public area, with a central lounge, private library area and a lecture hall, all surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. The lecture hall is laid out theater-style, but the seating is more lounge-style with comfortable chairs, bench seating and tables in each row.

Just behind the lectern are doors that lead to the fold-down, over-the-water observation decks. Whenever the officers or expedition leaders spotted a whale, bear or other interesting creature, announcements were made and activities halted, so passengers could grab binoculars or a scope and hit the decks to take in the views.

The main dining room has the formal feel you would expect to go along with its fine-dining options. But this is Alaska, so passengers are equally welcome in dresses and heels or jeans and sneakers. The menus change daily, with a good variety of gourmet meat, fish and vegetarian options. I was a fan of the homemade soups and the outstanding pasta options from the ship's Italian chef that changed daily.

I didn't use the spa, which looks to be more substantial than what's offered on other adventure ships in Alaska. The menu showed ample offerings from traditional massages to hot therapies, even manicures, pedicures and hair-cutting and -styling services.

Evenings were for casual socializing, listening to stories from the naturalists after dinner or simply sipping wine in the spacious lounge while the onboard pianist tickled the keys.

Oh, and did I mention the service? Whenever you turn around, there's a crew member at the ready. I barely needed a key as my cabin attendant always seemed to know when I was coming down the hall and would be there to open the door for me. As soon as I left for coffee or breakfast, he was there ready to clean up and take care of all the little extras, like filling my water bottle, without being asked.

Bottom line

While a few smaller luxury ships sail Alaska, Ocean Victory stands apart with its hybrid mix of intimacy and adventure.

"We're right in the sweet spot," Waggoner said.

I couldn't agree more. It's a sweet spot that I predict will be a huge hit with cruisers and non-cruisers alike who are seeking a truly immersive Alaska vacation.

About the Ocean Victory

The ship is laden with facilities. The Main Restaurant and the more casual Panorama Restaurant offer menus that change daily. Dinner always starts with delicious hot soups, cold cuts, and crisp, fresh salads. Several choices of entrees are offered each evening, to accommodate different tastes and dietary requirements, with a good variety of gourmet meat, fish and vegetarian options. Freshly prepared desserts include ship-made ice cream or cakes.

Much of the onboard social activity takes place on Deck 5 in the Albatros Nordic Bar Lounge, where you can partake in a wine-tasting menu. Next door in the Shackleton Lecture Room, you’ll discover plenty more about the region from the expedition team’s experts, including climatologists, geologists and renowned photographers, all of whom are eager to share their adventures and knowledge. This is also the place for learning about the next day’s expedition activities.

Deck 8, the Albatros barbeque deck, offers a casual-dining area with indoor and outdoor seating, making it the perfect spot for barbecues and other informal meals. On the Midnight Sun Pool Deck, you’ll find hot tubs under the stars, and an infinity pool.

The Knud Rasmussen Library is stocked with plenty of books, magazines, and games, while the on-board fitness center has weight machines, cardio equipment, and floor-to-ceiling windows with awe-inspiring sea views.

Finally, after an active day, you may wish to step into the Polar Spa for an escape within your escape in the form of rejuvenating destination-inspired treatments.

Wildlife Viewing & Excursions

Aboard your Ocean Victory Antarctica cruise, you can enjoy the ship’s terrific viewing areas, both indoors and outdoors, with a highlight being the retractable, over-the-water observation decks that offer in-your-face wildlife viewing. You can enjoy stunning views of the icy landscape from the Albatros Observation Lounge, which is also great for reading or relaxing.

Additionally, virtually all of the indoor spaces are lined with floor-to-ceiling windows, so whenever you want to see what’s ashore and in the water, you’ll never be more than a couple of steps away from a spectacular polar landscape view, ensuring that you’ll never miss a sea lion or whale tail.

Ocean Victory joined our fleet in November 2021 and was established as one of the most modern small ship vessels in the market.

The mudroom is utilised for passenger embarkation and disembarkation via our Zodiac boats. It is the place for guests to store their expedition gear, jackets, and boots and get set for their shore-landings.

Ocean Victory features two jacuzzis an infinity swimming pool and an outside bar on the upper deck, allowing spectacular views of the polar landscape outside in a relaxing environment.

Premium suite 45 m2 – PS The largest of all the staterooms on board the Ocean Victory is the Premium Suite. This 2-bedroom suite features a double bed (or twin beds), a sofa bed, table and chair, a balcony, and a spacious bathroom. Located on deck. 4. This category is available upon request. All stateroom types contain a safety box, television, refrigerator, several 230 W power and USB outlets—additionally, bathrobes, slippers, toiletries (body wash, lotion, shampoo) and a hairdryer are also included.

Junior suite 39 m2 The 4 Junior Suites aboard Ocean Victory have a great view from their location high up on the ship on deck 7. The suites feature a double bed or twin beds, sofa bed, seating area, a spacious bathroom, and a private balcony. The suite can accommodate up to 3 people.

Balcony Suite 25-32 m2 Ocean Victory has 6 Balcony Suites on board located on Deck 4 & 6. The suites feature double or twin beds, a bathroom and a large balcony. The balcony suites can host 2 people.

Two of the Category B Suites are larger in size and are equipped with HCP facilities, such as larger bathrooms and easy-access doorways.

Balcony State Stateroom app. 18-22 m2 The most abundant type of stateroom on Ocean Victory, the Balcony State Staterooms are located on decks 4 & 6. They have a balcony, a double bed or two single beds, a bathroom. Several of the Balcony Staterooms also include a seating area complete with a table and chair. Additionally, a select few of the Balcony Staterooms are equipped with a sofa that can serve as a bed for a third occupant.

If you prefer to book two staterooms with connecting doors, this is possible under this category upon request.

Albatros State Stateroom (Porthole) 22 m2 The standard stateroom on Ocean Victory is close to the Mudroom and has quick access to the zodiac platforms for disembarkation during landings. This is very convenient if you have more limited mobility and would like a short distance to the zodiacs. The staterooms are perfect for those who wish a comfortable base during their stay onboard Ocean Victory. The standard staterooms all have a double bed or 2 single beds and bathroom. The staterooms are located on deck 3 except for 1 which is located on deck 4.

French Balcony Stateroom 16 m2 The French Balcony Stateroom is a standard stateroom with a French balcony, one queen-sized bed (150x200 cm), floor-to-ceiling windows and a bathroom. All French Balcony Staterooms are located on Deck 7.

Triple Stateroom (Porthole) 22 m2 There are four Triple staterooms on board Ocean Victory featuring portholes, all with private en-suites. Located on Deck 3, they're close to the mudroom and loading platforms. Triple staterooms are normally with twin beds however a double bed can be accommodated.

Single Stateroom (Porthole) 18 m2 Standard single stateroom onboard, located on deck 3. This is a conveniently located stateroom close to the Mudroom which facilitates access to the Zodiacs during embarkation and disembarkation to begin your adventures on the Zodiacs. Single staterooms are normally with a porthole, double bed (200*90), reading light, and a sitting chair.

BRIDGE Due to its important role as a control center for all nautical and technical processes, the ship's bridge is a vital, sensitive place. Therefore, the bridge may not be accessible to the public at all times. Conditions permitting, we will be happy to welcome you into the bridge for a visit. Guests must be accompanied by the expedition leader.

JACUZZIS The ship features two jacuzzis on the upper outside deck (deck 7), allowing spectacular views of the polar landscape outside in a relaxing environment.    Please note, that there is no lifeguard on duty, and the jacuzzis will not be accessible if weather and wind conditions render them unsafe to use. It is to be expected that the use of these facilities will be on certain calm days and within certain hours, so if you plan on using them, please confer with the expedition staff onboard. The jacuzzis (hot tubs) can normally be used much more frequently and whilst the ship is moving.

STATEROOM SERVICE Your stateroom is serviced daily. We provide a turn-down service. We provide meals to the room only for serious cases of guests being sick. Our suites will have VIP services.

ZODIAC LANDINGS One feature of our expedition cruises includes landings and excursions aboard Ocean Victory's fleet of 18 inflatable, motorized rubber "Zodiac" boats. The Zodiac brand has earned a well-deserved reputation as the sturdiest and safest small watercraft available. These boats have a low draft and great stability. Zodiacs are constructed for professional use and are outfitted with a top-quality outboard engine, yet their design minimally impacts the environment.

The Zodiacs are designed to provide unrestricted access to the world’s last great frontier. Their versatility enables us to make landfall on remote shores, cruise along awe-inspiring coastlines, and share breathtakingly close encounters with whales, seals, penguins, seabirds, and more. We will come within arm’s reach of icebergs and set foot on land discovered by pioneering explorers just over a century ago. Your safety and comfort are our #1 priority, and your expedition leader will carefully plan for as many Zodiac excursions as possible, dependent upon the local weather and prevailing conditions. In each case, the expedition leader makes the final decision if the landing is possible or not. Safety regulations apply on landings. All guests receive mandatory instructions on the safety guidelines. Life jackets are mandatory to wear.

Please note, that we highly recommend the use of waterproof bags in order to protect your personal camera or binoculars, as both hands must be free of everything during boarding. Participation is fairly easy and comfortable for able-bodied guests but can be more challenging for those with physical handicaps.

CRUISE CARD / PAYMENTS / CREDIT CARDS At the time of embarkation, you will receive your personal cruise card, which you should always have with you. This card is used on board as a payment instrument and identity card. All on-board purchases from the boutique, bar, internet, telephone, laundry, and the like are charged to your shipboard account.

To activate your personal onboard account, we accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards. At the end of the voyage, your account will be settled by the payment methods mentioned above.

There is no currency exchange office onboard the vessel. Onboard payment will be completed by your cruise card. For stays ashore during the cruise, we recommend changing a minimal amount of the local currency in small bills, as most of the ports and airports have exchange offices. Alternatively, lots of shops and restaurants accept international credit cards. In bigger ports and cities, you have the possibility to withdraw cash from ATMs.

If you choose to leave a gratuity for the crew, the amount that you authorize will be charged to the shipboard account. Be sure to contact your credit card provider regarding the use of your credit cards overseas. Any questions regarding the bill can be addressed to the Reception.

GRATUITIES Following international standards in the service industry, it is customary to leave a gratuity for the ship’s crew at the end of the voyage. All gratuities will be divided among the crew. Typically, the recommended amount is approximately 13.50 USD per person per day. Gratuity is, of course, not required and any gratuity payments are voluntary. If you choose to leave a gratuity for the crew, the amount that you authorize will be charged to the shipboard account.

DRESS CODE The dress code on board is casual. Ties, jackets and evening dresses you may leave at home. It is rather more important to wear the right clothes in order to adapt to the different weather conditions. We recommend comfortable, breathable, waterproof, and windproof clothing. Also, you should have a pair of gloves, thermal underwear, and sturdy footwear in your luggage. For the captains and farewell cocktail, we recommend a smart casual dress style. For specific packing recommendations, refer to the specific itinerary of interest.

ENVIRONMENT As a tour operator for cruises in the Polar Regions, which are some of the world’s most pristine environments, we extremely emphasize environmental awareness as well as sustainability. One of our top priorities is to protect the environment and minimize our CO2 emissions. All waste will remain onboard the vessel until we return to shore and it's possible to dispose of waste. We ask that you show deep respect for the unique nature and act according to the motto: leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories.

INTERNET / PHONE Keep in mind, that we will be cruising in a very remote region of the world. Where accessible, internet access is available for an extra charge. Mobile phone reception may be possible in select regions along our route. For further details please contact your mobile phone operator. Prices can be found in the information folder in your stateroom. Please ensure that your ‘Data Roaming’ function is switched off.

LANGUAGE ONBOARD The official language aboard our vessels is English; however, our expedition leaders and crew are knowledgeable in a variety of languages. If there is a large group, who desires communication in their own language, we will make special arrangements to accommodate their needs.

PASSPORT / VISA Each guest is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the applicable passport and visa requirements for the duration of the trip. The passport is the only valid proof of identity for all trips with the Ocean Victory. Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after arriving home from your destination. Although some countries may require shorter periods, we implement this 6-month prerequisite to avoid situations where a country’s validity requirements may be amended between the time of your booking and departure. The name in your passport must be identical to the name in all travel documentation. Costs incurred due to insufficient travel documents are the responsibility of the passenger. Please note that passports will be collected for clearing formalities at the beginning of the voyage. The passports will be kept safely by the Purser during the whole voyage and will be handed out on the last day. We, therefore, recommend preparing copies of all documents before you start your travels.

RECEPTION The daily office hours of the board reception are from 06:00 until 23:00.

ALBATROS OCEAN BOUTIQUE The selection of items available for purchase varies by ship and may include a range of warm and practical clothing, as well as souvenirs, local arts, and postcards at reasonable prices. A small selection of soap, toothpaste, and other sundries are also sold.

HEALTH / MEDICAL EMERGENCY Each of our vessels has a small medical facility equipped with the necessary equipment and medicine to handle small emergencies. The infirmary is always staffed by a professionally licensed, English-speaking physician. Should a serious incident occur, the nearest hospital will be contacted. All guests must have personal travel/health insurance. Although we do not have an official requirement regarding personal fitness, you should be able to move on board and ashore without the help of others.  Due to safety reasons, a cruise is only possible for pregnant women until the 24th week of pregnancy. The state of pregnancy must be presented by a medical certificate.

SAFETY / SECURITY ON BOARD Our ships comply with all safety regulations and are ice-class vessels suitable for sailing in polar environments. Upon arrival on the vessel, there will be a mandatory passenger briefing and safety drill before departure. We will provide security information and practical details regarding life onboard and introduce key personnel. You will be informed where the safety equipment is located and how it is used. Each stateroom is equipped with lifejackets. Once onboard, please familiarize yourself with the ship's emergency rescue plan.

PHYSICAL DISABILITIES / WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY The Ocean Victory has two cabins available to guests requiring wheelchair access. Guests needing any form of assistance, and those who are physically disabled must be accompanied by someone who will take full responsibility for any needed assistance during the cruise and in the event of an emergency. Moreover, guests requiring a wheelchair must provide their own collapsible wheelchair. Please be aware that some ports of call, shore excursions, docks, gangways, and other requirements may preclude a wheelchair-bound guest from leaving the vessel; that decision will be made by the Expedition Leader or ship’s captain and is binding.

SEASICKNESS / STABILISATORS The ship is equipped with stabilizers in order to reduce the ship’s roll. However, these expeditions are hosted in remote regions, and it is possible to periodically encounter changing environments and climate patterns, including rough seas and large swells. Seasickness medication work solely or in part to help cure nausea for most people. These medicines can cause sleepiness. If you are prone to motion sickness, consult with your doctor prior to departure to help ensure your comfort while travelling.

SMOKING For safety reasons and to protect the health of our guests and employees, smoking is only allowed in designated areas on the outside decks. Smoking is not permitted inside the vessel, in the stateroom or near the Zodiacs. Please remember to respect our natural environments and dispose of cigarette butts in designated bins.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS All meals on board the vessel is chef-prepared. If you have special dietary requirements (food allergies, intolerances, health conditions or religious preferences), please inform us as early as possible - ideally, no later than 2 weeks before departure. In order to ensure efficient service, please re-confirm your requirements with the crew upon boarding the ship.

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS The ship has a 220v / 50 Hz cycle system. Please check your appliances before use. 110-volt appliances require an adapter prior to use aboard the ship. The electrical outlets on board Ocean Victory are the so called ‘F-type sockets’, round 2-pin, 220-240 V, grounded, used in continental Europe and Russia. They take C, E, and F-type 2-pin plugs.

WATER There are several water stations onboard Ocean Victory. Normally, water is not rationed, but we do advise our guests to pay attention to their water consumption.

LAUNDRY If you wish to have some laundry done while aboard the ship, laundry service is available for an additional fee.

ONBOARD BRIEFINGS The Expedition Leader will conduct regularly scheduled briefings to highlight key points in the itinerary, organize excursions and communicate important information.

CHILDREN Due to safety precautions, children under 12 years of age will be taken into consideration on each landing. It is entirely at the Expedition Leader’s discretion to permit children on excursions and shore landings.

ITINERARY & PROGRAM CHANGES As this is an expedition cruise to the world’s most remote region, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. We have planned itineraries for each tour package, but to ensure to safety of our guests and crew, we may be forced to change the route.

RULES FOR LANDINGS & EXCURSIONS When ashore, it is very important to show deep respect for the unique nature and act according to the motto: leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories. We also ask that you remain together with your group, as we are truly in the wild and must remain extra vigilant of the wildlife and weather conditions around us. A seguire visita guidata della città: la Piazza dei Miracoli, iscritta dall’Unesco nel Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità, si ammireranno la famosa Torre Pendente, la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore, il Battistero, il Camposanto. Al termine proseguimento per Lucca . Visita con l’accompagnatore dell'antico centro storico ricco di storia e monumenti: dal  Duomo di San Michele alla Via Fillungo con le case a torre, la Piazza Anfiteatro. In serata arrivo a  Montecatini , rinomata località termale della Toscana. Sistemazione in hotel. Cena e pernottamento. SOLO TOUR: MONTECATINI Arrivo individuale a Montecatini. ESCURSIONE ALLE CINQUE TERRE

2° giorno (km 205).

Prima colazione in hotel. Intera giornata dedicata all’escursione con l’accompagnatore alle Cinque Terre , cinque piccoli borghi incantati abbarbicati con effetti spettacolari alla costa ligure, rocciosa e scoscesa.La costa frastagliata, le scogliere, i terrazzamenti e i paesini a picco sul mare costituiscono un paesaggio unico. Il poeta Eugenio Montale ha immortalato la bellezza dei luoghi in versi indimenticabili. Il Parco delle Cinque Terre è annoverato dall’Unesco nel Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità. Visita di  Monterosso , con il borgo vecchio, i carrugi e la Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. Pranzo libero. Proseguimento per Vernazza ,  il borgo più intatto e caratteristico delle Cinque Terre, reso inconfondibile sia dalla torre del Castello dei Doria che dallo sperone roccioso che domina il mare. Al termine rientro a La Spezia *.  In serata rientro in hotel a Montecatini. Cena e pernottamento. *in caso di avverse condizioni metereologiche o di problemi tecnici di qualsiasi natura che sconsiglino o impediscano l'utilizzo di battelli l’escursione verrà effettuata in treno.

3° Giorno (km 95)

Prima colazione in hotel. Partenza per Firenze , città incredibilmente ricca di storia e di cultura inserita dall’Unesco nel Patrimonio dell’Umanità. Dapprima salita al Piazzale Michelangelo da cui si gode una suggestiva vista  sulla città divisa in due parti dall'Arno. Discesa in città e visita guidata  a piedi  del centro storico: Piazza del Duomo cuore della città, con Santa Maria del Fiore, la cupola del Brunelleschi, il Campanile di Giotto ed il Battistero. Pranzo libero. La passeggiata termina al  Ponte Vecchio che unisce le due rive dell'Arno. Rientro a Montecatini. Cena e pernottamento.

Per scoprirla, vi proponiamo cinque itinerari in Toscana da tre giorni per scoprire tutte le sfaccettature di una terra meravigliosa.

### 1. Tra storia e cultura, nel nord della Toscana

Giorno 1. Se ami la storia e vuoi scoprire la Toscana attraverso l’arte, non puoi non iniziare il tour da Firenze . Arriva a Santa Maria Novella e immergiti nel suo magico centro. Raggiungi Santa Maria del Fiore, Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza della Signoria con Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio con le sue storiche oreficerie, Palazzo Pitti con il Grande Giardino di Boboli. Non perderti, poi, gli Uffizi ma anche le varie gallerie d’arte.

Giorno 2. Dopo un giorno a Firenze, raggiungi Pisa con la sua famosa Torre pendente, il Duomo e il Battistero di San Giovanni, tutti raccolti nella suggestiva e verde Piazza dei Miracoli.

Giorno 3. Infine raggiungi Lucca , con le sue possenti mura. Queste sono un esempio unico in Italia di fortificazione moderna ancora perfettamente conservata. Fai il giro delle mura e affacciati ai vari bastioni per apprezzare il paesaggio e il suggestivo centro abitato.

### 2. Lungo la costa, tra movida e relax

Giorno 1. Se raggiungi la Toscana da sud, visita Capalbio , piccolo borgo che domina una delle coste più selvagge d’Italia, tra laghi salmastri e canneti. Le sue spiagge sono quasi completamente libere e immerse in una natura incontaminata. Procedi verso nord, e fermati ad Orbetello , particolare borgo al centro di una laguna. Da qui, in poco più di 15 minuti d’auto, raggiungerai Porto Santo Stefano, sul promontorio dell’ Argentario . Il lungomare del borgo ispira una passeggiata con il gelato in mano. Poco oltre potrai immergerti nelle meravigliose acque di Cala Grande.

Giorno 2. Ritorna a Orbetello e prosegui sulla Via Aurelia verso nord. Visita il piccolo borgo marinaro di Talamone , dove Garibaldi sostò durante l’impresa dei Mille. Da Principina a Mare fino a Follonica, passando per Castiglione della Pescaglia scoprirai una costa immersa nel verde delle varie riserve naturali. Non perderti un tuffo a Cala Marina .

Giorno 3. La Via Aurelia prosegue per Marina di Bibbona, Cecina e Rosignano. Dopo Livorno , dove non potrai fare a meno di fermarti a mangiare un cacciucco favoloso nei pressi del porto, prosegui per Viareggio , Lido di Camaiore e Forte dei Marmi . Qui le spiagge selvagge lasciano spazio ai sofisticati stabilimenti. Concludi il tour in qualche discoteca sulla spiaggia.

### 3. Toscana, vino e fiorentina

Giorno 1. Quando in Toscana si parla di vini, il Chianti la fa da padrone. Parti da Firenze verso Siena seguendo la Strada Chiantigiana costellata di importanti cantine. Visita il borgo di Greve , nel cuore del consorzio del Chianti classico. Fermati al Museo del Vino dove potrai assaggiare oltre 100 tipi di nettare per scoprire tutti i sapori di questa terra.

Giorno 2. Raggiungi, quindi, Siena con la sua piazza dove si corre il famoso Palio e visita le sue chiese e il centro medievale. Poco più a sud incontrerai Montalcino con la sua splendida torre centrale e il suo abitato medioevale. Qui, non dimenticare di visitare il Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino : perditi nelle numerose cantine nel borgo e nei suoi dintorni.

Giorno 3. A pochi chilometri verso est puoi raggiungere Pienza , conosciuta come “città ideale” di impronta decisamente rinascimentale. Qui puoi assaporare uno dei migliori formaggi pecorini d’Italia, da accompagnare con il miele locale o con le mostarde. Non perderti nei vari ristoranti il lampredotto, il castagnaccio e la famosa bistecca alla fiorentina.

### 4. Tra la natura

Giorno 1. Uno dei luoghi in Toscana dove la natura regala paesaggi naturali avvincenti è la Maremma . Visita la Riserva Naturale del Lago di Burano , lungo la costa del comune di Capalbio. Qui, accompagnato da una guida del WWF, potrai scoprire i segreti di questo specchio d’acqua salmastra e l’incredibile varietà di uccelli migratori che tra i canneti trovano rifugio.

Giorno 2. Spostati poco più a nord, oltre il promontorio di Ansedonia, per scoprire l’integra macchia mediterranea che si estende lungo il Tombolo della Feniglia , striscia di terra che separa dal mare la laguna di Orbetello. Qui potrai incontrare daini che scorrazzano liberi sotto i pini e potrai fermarti per un bagno ristoratore sulla vicina spiaggia selvaggia.

Giorno 3. Sali sul Monte Argentario per seguire i vari percorsi di trekking nella natura. Raggiungi la sommità e goditi l’incredibile paesaggio della Costa d’Argento dall’alto.

### 5. In viaggio tra le isole

L’Arcipelago toscano è un amalgama perfetto di storia e natura. Da Porto Santo Stefano, da Piombino e da altre località sulla costa è possibile salire a bordo di imbarcazioni che consentono di scoprirlo con una mini-crociera di una giornata tra l’Isola del Giglio e l’Elba. Ma se hai più tempo, goditi le varie isole e le loro spiagge.

Giorno 1. Il Giglio offre la possibilità di immergersi in un contesto unico e naturale tra torri di avvistamento e acqua cristallina. La piccola Giannutri conserva nel suo cuore una villa romana, da raggiungere attraverso impervi sentieri.

Giorno 2. Naviga nell’arcipelago verso nord fino all’Elba. L’ Isola di Montecristo è una riserva naturale e non può essere visitata se non con un permesso speciale, mentre Pianosa conserva la struttura di un ex carcere.

Giorno 3. Infine, l’ Isola d’Elba riserva a chi la visita specialità culinarie, spiagge e calette magnifiche. Poi, mettiti sulle tracce di Napoleone che trascorse qui l’esilio e ne divenne principe.

The tour started in Florence on October 6th and ended on October 12th in Pisa, Italy. The trip was a magical experience, weaving its way through the small medieval towns and narrow streets that have defined the people and travel in the area for centuries. To be able to walk and ride the roads, see the historical greatness of Western Civilization envelope you, the craftsmanship and stunning beauty of the Renaissance show themselves off in all their splendor was emotionally and spiritually moving. Much of what you will experience all depends on your expectations and openness to the travel experience. If you want to meet the people in their daily walk of life, eat at the table set aside with only your group, eat food specifically made with the love and attention of the owner and only for your group of travelers--that was special and memorable--and TASTY! If you want to be the only group in a courtyard dining setting that is set off against the warmth and glow of the street lights hanging against the backdrop of stone houses and the night lights of the sky above you, then this trip will slowly pull you into a growing love of the area and the people you experience in your travel. Stopping off at small shops for a cappachino, a pastry, or some other warm drink; overlooking a vineyard while sitting on a patio setting in the home of an elderly couple as they loving prepare a warm drink;lounging in the moment and savoring the conversation of your fellow cyclists and then moving onto the next stop or final destination is like slowing finding yourself falling in love with the place and surroundings, to the point that you now know you are in love with the people and the places that make up the heart and soul of Italy. This trip was like decorating a Christmas tree: you place all the lights and ornaments on a tree and see its beauty manifest... and then you turn on the tree lights and see the magic of the lights transform the tree and the surroundings. It all adds to the wonder and magic of the experience. Our tour guide, Elisa Cattaneo, a native-born Italian, was the woman who gave all the experiences the specialness from which I will hold in my heart forever. She freely and willing shared the love of her country with us and provided the special places that we stopped and ate our meals in throughout the trip. I would only suggest two things regarding this trip; 1. Name tags for the first day 2. Using a video camera on the helmet of the group leader and the sweeper at the end was spacially beautiful to see the riders moving in rhythm and harmony while riding. We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel in Florence but only because the same street changed names 3 times in 3 blocks! The trains were comfortable and on time. La Dolce Vita - 11 days

The first 7 days were excellent with Clara, our tour guide. She was knowledgeable, coordinated the schedule to make sure everything was on time and everyone was included. She was also fun and interesting with a good sense of humor. The tour guide for the last three day, Ludovica, was not communicative or very friendly. On the day we arrived in Sorrento we were dropped off at a street corner and told our hotel was just up the road. It turns out the hotel was over a mile uphill and Ludovica never mentioned that the hotel would provide a shuttle. We ended up climbing up the hill with our luggage in very hot weather. It is very disappointing that the tour guide did not communicate this.

La poco appariscente pasticceria Conca d’Oro , a Venturina, non lontana da Campiglia Marittima, è un ottimo posto per fare colazione. Le gustose brioche al gianduja o alla crema sono davvero golose! Noi le abbiamo apprezzate accompagnate da un buon cappuccino.

Bulichella, vini espressione del territorio

L’ azienda agricola Bulichella si trova nei pressi del piccolo borgo medievale di Suvereto , un suggestivo borgo che sorge tra le colline che si affacciano sul Mar Tirreno, l’isola d’Elba e il vicino Montepeloso. Una posizione ideale che permette alle vigne di godere di un favorevole effetto climatico.

Hideyuki Miyakawa con la figlia Maria Schizuko amministra 42 ettari di terreno, di cui 14 vitati, 10 ettari dedicati all’olivicoltura con 1.600 piante dalle quali si ricava l’ olio Extravergine di Oliva IGP Bulichella, un laghetto, un orto con frutteto, un piccolo bosco e un’area destinata all’attività agrituristica.

In questo terroir i vitigni bordolesi Cabernet Sauvignon e Merlot insieme al tipico Sangiovese trovano le condizioni ideali per raggiungere massimi livelli di eccellenza. A contraddistinguere in particolare i vitigni della zona sono l’eleganza e l’equilibro nel finale.

Sono davvero tanti i posti dove mangiare bene nella zona di Campiglia Marittima . Ecco una piccola selezione di proposte per gli amanti del pesce e della carne. Se vuoi mangiare, anche tardi, nel borgo medievale di Campiglia Marittima, il ristorante pizzeria Il Pozzo Lungo è il locale per te. Ristorante con tavoli all’aperto, serve piatti di pesce, di verdure e pizze, anche gourmet. Ottimi gli antipasti di pesce, in particolare il carpaccio di tonno. Lo sformato di zucchine con crema di taleggio al tartufo è veramente super!

Se vuoi una cucina gourmet con un pizzico di sperimentazione scegli, sempre a Campiglia Marittima, il ristorante Mamanonmama . Cucina italiana e mediterranea, propone la divertente formula: “ fidati di me” proposta in 3 diverse formule (con la possibilità di scegliere il numero di portate e il prezzo del menù), affidandoti allo chef e al suo percorso a sorpresa. Simpatico il finto pomodoro , ottime le polpette di tonno e il gazpacho , così come i piccoli assaggi di torte fatte in casa .

Nei pressi di Venturina Terme da provare l’ Osteria Vecchio Borgo con il suo antipasto Vecchio Borgo , una zuppetta di cozze e vongole racchiusa in pasta di pane e la sua frittura di pesce .

A Cafaggiol’ Osteria Annalisa , offre ottimi piatti di terra e di mare. Dalla squisita trippa ai gnocchetti conditi con un sugo di cozze e vongole fino alla fiorentina . E per chi alla carne non sa proprio dire di no? A Suvereto BOS Fuoco e Grano . Ottime le tartare al coltello , così come la fiorentina . E non perdeterti la torta di cioccolato !

Dove andare in vacanza a settembre: Argentario

Rocca Aldobrandesca, la visita guidata per scoprire come si viveva a Capalbio

Simbolo di Capalbio , la Rocca Aldobrandesca affianca l’elegante  Palazzo Collacchioni e consente, grazie ad una terrazza merlata di godere di un panorama meraviglioso. La dimora storica ha origini medievali ed è appartenuta anche all’Abbazia delle Tre Fontane di Roma. Nel 1200 passò alla famiglia degli Aldobrandeschi per poi essere conquistata dai Senesi. Giacosa, il bar dove nacque il Negroni

Lo storico locale, dove nel 1919, nasceva il Negroni – all’angolo fra via Tornabuoni e via della Spada – riapre offrendo cibo e cocktail di qualità. La storia del Giacosa risale agli inizi dell’800 quando via Tornabuoni era sulla mappa del Grand Tour dei viaggiatori da tutto il mondo. Il locale divenne ben presto il ritrovo dei dandy di tutta Europa. Negli anni il bar perse importanza. Fu messo in vendita più volte fino ad essere chiuso definitivamente nel 2017. Oggi la famiglia Valenza recupera un importante pezzo di storia fiorentina. La ristrutturazione, firmata dagli architetti  Paolo Becagli  e  Alessandro Interlando,  rispetta l’immagine storica del locale e restituisce a Firenze un pezzo della sua storia.

Il primo menu dei cocktail del nuovo Giacosa propone il classico aperitivo italiano con una drink list composta da tre sezioni. La prima è un omaggio alla tradizione, con i “classici” Negroni, in cui la ricetta tradizionale rimane invariata, pur cambiando modalità di servizio o tecniche di preparazione. La seconda è dedicata alle rivisitazioni in chiave moderna della tradizionale ricetta inventata dal Conte nel 1919, da cui nascono il  Gibson Negroni  o il  Cham-on!,  personale rivisitazione di un Negroni Bianco. Nella terza si guarda al futuro dell’aperitivo.  Giacosa Creations  è il nome che propone le rivisitazioni di alcuni grandi classici dell’aperitivo italiano come il  Garibaldi  con Savoia Americano, Chinotto, arancia e cacao, o il  Cardinale , arricchito da note d’incenso.

Scarperia, per gli appassionati di coltelli

Delle 450 botteghe di coltellinai che si trovavano a Scarperia , a pochi chilometri da Firenze, nel periodo di massimo splendore, oggi ne restano solo cinque. La bella cittadina medievale è sede di mostre, collezioni temporanee e del Museo dei Ferri Taglienti, dove è conservata una collezione di coltelli da offesa, per gioco e per difesa e diverse tipologie di forbici.

Itinerario 4 giorni in Toscana

Lo ammetto, non vedevo l’ora di raccontarvi questo viaggio! Innanzitutto perché posso mettere la spunta a una delle 100 cose da fare prima di morire , in secondo luogo perché questa regione si fa amare facilmente, tra borghi, terme, buon cibo e ottimo vino!

Ci siamo regalati questo viaggio di coppia subito dopo la mia sudata laurea in Management e consulenza aziendale, avete presente quando si dice meritato relax ?!

Come organizzare un weekend lungo in Toscana

Abbiamo scelto la Toscana perché si presta bene all’improvvisazione. Mi spiego meglio: non avevo tempo di studiare l’itinerario, causa laurea di cui sopra, quindi ho scelto una destinazione che prevedesse tante cose belle in uno spazio ristretto e ragionevolmente percorribile in auto in pochi giorni. Ho prenotato solo la nostra base, un agriturismo su Booking che prometteva il silenzio e la pace della campagna toscana che si stende attorno al Monte Amiata.

Qui occorre una precisazione: il nostro agriturismo era fin troppo fuori dal mondo, perché non avevamo considerato i tempi di spostamento in queste zone. Se anche voi siete abituati a spostarvi tra autostrade e superstrade, calcolate che qui i tempi di percorrenza sono almeno duplicati. Si passa per borghi stupendi, dalle strade molto strette, e si ammirano paesaggi collinari che costringono a continue curve.

Attenzione ai tempi di percorrenza: 18 km possono corrispondere a 40 minuti di strada

Itinerario in Toscana nelle terre del Brunello: giorno 1

La mattina del primo giorno la passiamo in viaggio, usciamo dall’autostrada a Siena e inizia il nostro itinerario toscano . Prima tappa: pranzo a Buonconvento e due passi digestivi per il borgo semideserto, complice la giornata festiva. Ci addentriamo per le sue stradine ammirando le case in pietra, i cortili, i balconi curati. Come dico nel video su YouTube , è il posto perfetto per giocare a nascondino.

Seconda tappa a Montalcino , il regno del Brunello. Scopriamo che oltre alle cantine c’è molto altro da visitare, passeggiando per le viuzze in salita sino alla Rocca. L’antica fortezza diede rifugio all’ultima repubblica senese sino al 1559, quando cadde in mano ai Medici. Oggi ospita una cantina al piano terra e una mostra d’arte ai piani superiori, dai quali si può accedere alla cinta muraria. Garantiamo che la vista sul borgo merita anche quando c’è nebbia!

Terza tappa a Bagno Vignoni , che vanta meno di 50 abitanti ma un’incredibile vasca termale in centro al paese che potrebbe tranquillamente ospitarli tutti. NDR: non è balneabile, ma potete rilassarvi negli stabilimenti termali privati lì accanto.

Itinerario in Toscana alle terme di Saturnia: giorno 2

Il secondo giorno è la volta di realizzare un sogno: le terme di Saturnia. Trascorriamo tre piacevoli ore immersi nelle calde acque termali, spostandoci in diversi punti delle Cascate del Mulino . La temperatura esterna è tra i 10 e i 15 gradi, probabilmente sopra la media per essere i primi giorni di novembre. Questo rende accettabile anche cambiarsi fuori dalla macchina, per poi proseguire verso la seconda tappa: Pitigliano!

Pitigliano è un borgo di quasi 4.000 abitanti a circa mezz’ora di strada da Saturnia. L’ho subito paragonato a un presepe, per l’impatto visivo che ha questo borgo arroccato.

Non a caso, viene chiamato anche la piccola Gerusalemme . Può vantare infatti la presenza di una comunità ebraica molto ben integrata. Nel centro storico si possono visitare i resti degli insediamenti più antichi e la sinagoga, tutt’oggi utilizzata.

Itinerario in Toscana tra i borghi del tufo: giorno 3

Il terzo giorno continua la nostra esplorazione dei borghi del tufo , definizione che oltre a Pitigliano comprende Sorano e Sovana . In questa zona sono state ritrovate antichissime necropoli etrusche, raggiungibili a piedi. La pioggia però ci sorprende sul più bello della nostra esplorazione, quindi decidiamo di restare nei borghi e concederci una degustazione di vino. Sorano è il più antico di questi borghi, dove ancora si conservano le case-torri medievali e le cantine scavate nel tufo.

Sovana invece è nota per aver dati i natali a papa Gregorio VI. Il borgo si sviluppa lungo la via principale, che porta dalla Rocca aldobrandesca alla Concattedrale dei santi Pietro e Paolo, un importante esempio di stile romanico. Durante la nostra visita il borgo era poco affollato, ci è sembrato di essere sul set di un film western. Avete presente le strade deserte in cui si muovono solo le sterpaglie?

Rientrando non abbiamo potuto rinunciare al secondo bagno alle terme di Saturnia, per poi fermarci a fare due passi in centro paese. Nonostante fosse presto, abbiamo fatto fatica a trovare posto per mangiare, vi consigliamo di prenotare.

Ultimo giorno in Toscana: giorno 4

L’ultimo giorno passiamo a salutare Roccalbegna , il paese in cui abbiamo soggiornato, seppur molto fuori dal centro, persi tra i campi. Anche questo borgo è molto caratteristico, in particolare merita la vista dall’alto della Rocca e il trittico del Lorenzetti conservato nella chiesa principale.

Ebbene sì, i borghi toscani li abbiamo amati tutti, impossibile decretare un solo vincitore!

Poi torniamo verso Montalcino, nella sua contrada Castelnuovo dell’Abate, dove si trova l’ abbazia di Sant’Antimo . La costruzione romanica risale al XII secolo, ma leggenda narra che l’abbazia fu fondata da Carlo Magno nel IX secolo. Dopo, una lunga storia di ristrutturazioni e abbandoni, sino ai tempi più recenti: negli anni Settanta vi rientrarono i monaci benedettini. Le visite guidate sono disponibili tutti i giorni, mentre la domenica si può assistere alla Messa delle 11 con canti gregoriani. L’abbazia si trova in una location eccezionale, immersa nel verde di vigne e uliveti. Nell’orto e nelle serre vengono coltivati molti dei prodotti che troverete nella farmacia monastica.

Merita senz’altro una visita anche il cuore antico di Castelnuovo dell’Abate , piccolo borgo abbarbicato sulla cima d’un colle, com’è classico da queste parti.

La Toscana regala sempre scorci meravigliosi. Molti dei luoghi da te citati li ho già visitati ma alcuni me li sono segnati per la prossima occasione. Adesso attendo il post dedicato ai tuoi locali preferiti.

Che meraviglia il vostro mini-tour toscano! 😀 La Toscana mi affascina da tempo, ma non ho ancora avuto occasione di andarci, ad eccezione di una capatina a Lucca e a Firenze lo scorso anno. I piccoli borghi della Val d’Orcia, però, immagino siano tutt’altra cosa! Le fotografie sono bellissime, con quel cielo cupo poi hanno un fascino tutto particolare! Conoscevo soltanto Montalcino e le Terme di Saturnia, perciò mi segno tutte le altre vostre tappe! 😀

Anche io ne ho fato uno simile in centro italia nelle vacanze di Pasqua, in cui erano compresi anche le cascate del mulino e Pitigliano, solo che a causa di un guasto alla moto abbiamo dovuto cambiare leggermete programmi e quindi sono saltati… Dalle tue foto e descrizioni, mannaggia, mi mangio le mani a non esserci stata!

Io ti consiglierei di alloggiare in almeno due posti, perché muoversi tra le colline toscane richiede molto tempo. Noi avevamo scelto un agriturismo immerso nel verde, ma per fare 18 km fino alle terme di Saturnia ci impiegavamo 40 minuti.

Ho prenotato il ponte del primo novembre in un albergo nei pressi di Saturnia. Dal tuo racconto sembra che ci si possa immergere ne le cascate del mulino anche in quei giorni! Speriamo bene!

Ciao Angela, l’anno scorso secondo me era particolarmente caldo per essere novembre, ricordo che un giorno a Pitigliano ero in maniche corte. Se hai paura di avere freddo ti consiglio di andare nelle ore centrali della giornata, troverai le cascate un po’ affollate, ma la temperatura è ideale. Noi ci siamo stati sia di giorno sia la sera e la differenza di temperatura si sente.

4 giorni possono essere pochi, ma ci sono talmente tanti percorsi ed itinerari in questa zona che non potete esservi proprio annoiati! Spero tu abbia anche altre occasioni per approfondire la nostra zona

Impossibile annoiarsi, sono d’accordo! Infatti cerchiamo di tornare ogni anno, lo scorso autunno ci siamo concentrati sulla Val D’Orcia.

Toscana: itinerario di 10 giorni on the road

Quest’anno la Toscana chiama e così abbiamo pensato di consigliarvi un itinerario di 10 giorni tra splendide città, borghi, campagna, mare e montagna. Questo è un itinerario da fare in auto o in moto, è molto intenso, ma è un percorso adatto a tutti, anche per chi come noi ha voglia di visitare e vedere cose nuove ma senza stancarsi troppo, perché ci sarà anche modo di riposare.

La regione Toscana offre tutto: mare, montagna, relax, jetset, terme, colline, campagna, borghi, laghi, esperienze particolari e se vi piace cercare sempre cose nuove da vedere questo percorso è l’ideale. Ovviamente non vedrete tutto, ma siamo certe che sia il miglior itinerario di 10 giorni per vedere il più possibile. Abbiamo creato questo itinerario on the road della Toscana partendo dal nord della regione fino ad arrivare quasi al confine con l’Umbria, ma ovviamente può essere percorso anche al contrario, se ad esempio arrivate dal sud d’Italia.

Dopo questo itinerario on the road siamo sicure che tornerete a casa sodisfatti ma con la voglia di ritornare in questa splendida regione per vedere quello che vi manca. Ma andiamo con ordine e partiamo!

ATTENZIONE!

L’itinerario on the road di 10 giorni in Toscana che abbiamo sviluppato è pensato per visitare il più possibile della regione. Un mix delle bellezze che questa terra offre, per questo motivo abbiamo rinunciato a tappe importanti come Firenze, Siena, Arezzo e Livorno con la sua costa e non perché non valga la pena andare, tutt’altro, pensiamo che alcuni posti meritano di essere visitati per più tempo e che 10 giorni non sono certamente sufficienti per vedere bene le città d’arte della regione. Inoltre le città sono facilmente raggiungibili anche per un week end dunque teniamoci qualcosa per le visite future! Enjoy!

Ecco la mappa dell’itinerario in Toscana da fare in 10 giorni

GIORNO 1) Isola Santa e Ponte del Diavolo

La prima tappa in Toscana è la bellissima e suggestiva ISOLA SANTA . E’ il punto più a nord che visiterete e secondo noi è l’ideale per iniziare il vostro on the road in Toscana in maniera rilassata e con la bellezza negli occhi. La visita al piccolo borgo è abbastanza rapida, ma se volete potete restarci anche tutta la giornata. L’acqua e la folta vegetazione vi cattureranno! A soli 43 minuti di auto c’è Borgo a Mozzano, un piccolo paese montano affacciato sul fiume diventato famoso per il suo ponte: Il Ponte della Maddalena, conosciuto come “Il Ponte del Diavolo”. Ne abbiamo parlato ampiamente qui in questo articolo e secondo noi è il punto di partenza ideale per esplorare la regione in maniera soft!

Dal suggestivo Ponte del Diavolo vi consigliamo di puntare il vostro navigatore verso Lucca e di perdere di passare il resto della serata in questa meravigliosa città, pernottando proprio a Lucca.

GIORNO 2) Lucca + Pisa

Nel secondo giorno del nostro on the road di 10 giorni in Toscana vi dedicherete alla visita di due città: la mattina a Lucca con il suo centro storico, le mura e l’orto botanico e il pomeriggio gita a Pisa, città icona dell’italianità nel mondo. Entrambe le città sono abbastanza vicine ed è possibile visitare le zone più famose in un giorno. E la sera? Noi vi consigliamo una cena sul litorale pisano.

Giorno 3) A spasso tra borghi e campagna pisana

La terza giornata sarà piena di storia e di paesaggi collinari che meritano una la visita. Non c’è bisogno di alzarsi all’alba, tuttavia partire presto può essere un ottimo consiglio per prendersela con calma.

La prima tappa della giornata sarà GHIZZANO , il borgo colorato che ha puntato sull’arte per ripartire. Noi ci siamo state di recente e lo consigliamo davvero. La visita sarà breve, ma intensa e poi.. è uno dei borghi più instagrammati del 2021.

Da Ghizzano vi consigliamo di puntare il navigatore verso LAJATICO , il piccolo borgo dove è nato Andrea Bocelli e dove tutt’ora vive il celebre cantante. Il borgo è una vera chicca e vi possiamo solo dire che ve ne innamorerete a prima vista.

La terza giornata si concluderà a CASTELFALFI, il borgo ecosostenibile che abbiamo visitato nel 2020. Questo posto ha panorami mozzafiato, un hotel da urlo, un campo da golf, un resort con una SPA meravigliosa e ben 4 ristoranti. Se riuscite consigliamo di dormire in zona per vedere il tramonto sulle colline, sarà uno spettacolo meraviglioso.

Giorno 4) Medioevo ed enogastronomia toscana

Quarto giorno ricco di storia! Si inizia con una visita nella città di Volterra. La città di origine medievale è una delle più belle città toscane e in estate è gettonatissima! Consigliamo una visita tranquilla di circa 5-6 ore con pranzo a base di ottimi pici toscani e ottimo vino. Abbiamo parlato di Volterra in questo articolo e vi consigliamo di non perdervi il centro storico.

Subito dopo pranzo puntate il vostro navigatore verso San Gimignano, la città delle torri, o meglio quello che nell’antichità era considerata una sorta di Manhattan italiana. Inutile dirvi che siamo grandi fan di San Gimignano e che ci andiamo molto spesso. Dove dormire? Vi consigliamo la Fattoria San Donato , posto immerso nel verde con una vista mozzafiato sulle torri.

Giorno 5) E’ il momento della Val d’Orcia e dei suoi panorami

Il giorno 5 del nostro itinerario prevede la visita in Val d’Orcia. E niente, lo sapete: siamo follemente innamorate della Val d’Orcia e dei suoi paesaggi mozzafiato. Dal momento in cui arriverete ad Asciano fino a Pienza, la vostra parola più ricorrente sarà WOW! Perché qui non è un “effetto wow”… è il posto che davvero è WOW! Questa zona è splendida in ogni stagione anche in inverno, e se siete fortunati potrete vederla con una spolverata di neve, noi l’abbiamo vista qualche mese fa – ecco le foto

Abbiamo viaggiato abbastanza negli ultimi anni, ma non abbiamo mai visto niente che lontanamente somigli alla Val d’Orcia e alle Crete senesi e questo itinerario dedica una giornata intera all’esplorazione di questa zona. Ma attenzione, tenete conto dei tempi e delle distanze.

Da San Gimignano a Pienza sono in media 1 ora e 35 di auto e vi sono due strade. La prima è quella più panoramica, ma è anche la più lunga: da San Gimignano puntate il navigatore verso Asciano e da lì puntate verso Pienza. La strada è bellissima, passerete dalle Crete senesi prima di entrare in Val d’Orcia e siamo sicure che vi fermerete spesso per ammirare e fotografare il panorama. Un vero sogno – paradiso per fotografi di landscapes.

L’altra strada è quella più veloce: da San Gimignano puntate il navigatore verso Pienza e vedrete che risparmierete circa 15-20 minuti di strada. Questa via farà passare da Buonconvento , un borgo davvero bello e che vi porterà via circa 40 minuti per visitarlo.

Dunque tenete conto dei tempi. Questa sarà una giornata rilassante per gli occhi e per la mente, ma i chilometri inizieranno a farsi sentire, per questo motivo non aggiungiamo altro all’itinerario della giornata. Consigliamo di trovare un posto per la notte in questa splendida zona, prima di ripartire per la meta successiva: agriturismi e casali qui la fanno da padroni e certamente non mancheranno luoghi dove mangiare.

Vi consigliamo di prenotare in anticipo un posto per il pranzo, così da non dover cercare agriturismi o locali durante la vostra visita. Vi farà risparmiare tempo e … denaro. Per la cena invece potrete magari affidarvi alla struttura che prenotate per il pernottamento in genere non si tirano mai indietro.

Noi abbiamo soggiornato una notte al Relais Castello di Leonina ad Asciano e ci siamo trovate benissimo. E’ una struttura antica molto ben tenuta, al suo interno c’è un ottimo ristorante con tavoli all’esterno con vista sulle crete senesi. Il tramonto da qui è una cosa irripetibile.

Giorno 6) Montepulciano e Montalcino

Giornata dedicata alle due cittadine che hanno fatto del vino e dell’enogastronomia la loro forza. Degustazioni ed esperienze gastronomiche sono le cose che più amiamo fare in questi luoghi. Non abbiate fretta, prendete questa visita con lentezza: vino e cibo qui sono eccezionali. E poi questi due luoghi offrono scorci fotografici bellissimi.

Giorno 7) I borghi della maremma

Il settimo giorno è il giorno della Maremma e dei suoi bellissimi borghi. La destinazione più famosa è Pitigliano a cui affianchiamo Sovana , Sorano e Manciano . Borghi meravigliosi per una visita lenta. Ci siamo state diverso tempo fa ma sono tutti borghi che vi daranno vere soddisfazioni. Consigliamo di pernottare in zona, verso Montemerano dove troverete agriturismi e locande per ogni budget. La zona è strategica perchè da lì si raggiunge praticamente tutto. Noi abbiamo pernottato una villa con piscina La Gattaiola a Montemerano e ci siamo trovate benissimo. A pochi passi da questa splendida villa c’è una locanda con camere molto bella, i prezzi sono nella norma e soprattutto si mangia benissimo, dunque ecco un altro indirizzo: Locanda All’Andreas , ristorante con camere e wine bar.

Giorno 8) Terme e relax

Giornata dedicata al relax a alle terme di Saturnia, famose in tutto il mondo. Noi vi consigliamo di prenotare una giornata nel Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort , dove oltre ad avere impianti all’avanguardia potrete davvero rilassarvi per una giornata. Le terme libere sono a poca distanza, ma tenete conto che in base alla stagione, potrete davvero trovare tanta, troppa gente.

Giorno 9 e 10) E ora un po’ di mare

La prossima giornata è dedicata al mare e alla visita di un borgo situato sul litorale grossetano. Noi consigliamo la visita del borgo di Castiglione della Pescaia , e il pomeriggio un po’ di relax sulle sue spiagge sabbiose. E’ il momento di pensare al rientro, ma abbiamo ancora un ultima giornata da trascorrere in Toscana e l’ideale è trascorrerla nel relax più completo, per questo vi consigliamo di fermarvi un giorno intero in spiaggia. Dove? Scegliete voi, non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta!

Conclusioni e consigli

Nel nostro itinerario di 10 giorni in Toscana abbiamo cercato di concentrare il percorso su tutte le bellezze naturali e storiche della regione, ovviamente questo tour non è esaustivo perché ci sono tantissimi altri posti che meritano di essere visti, primi fra tutti la costa livornese e le grandi città. Tuttavia lo riteniamo un ottimo punto di partenza per conoscere la nostra meravigliosa regione e poi .. si può sempre tornare.

Sono fermamente convinta che la Toscana sia una delle regioni italiane che va esplorata assolutamente on the road! E’ l’unico, prezioso modo di non perdersi scorci meravigliosi e pittoreschi!

Sicuramente 10 giorni non bastano per esplorare tutta la Toscana ma sono sufficienti per cogliere sprazzi di bellezza qua e là e decidere dove tornare e passare più tempo!

Stiamo pensando proprio di fare un on the road in Toscana ad Ottobre! Noi staremo una settimana e vorremmo visitare anche le città più importanti, ma prenderò spunto dal vostroitinerario per inserire alcuni dei borghi e le terme di Saturnia sicuramente!

La Toscana esercita senza sosta - da secoli - un grande fascino sui “forestieri”: la sua inesauribile bellezza, raccontata in immagini, film, in infinite library fotografiche e su altrettanti profili social si imprime nello sguardo dei viaggiatori di ogni latitudine. Una serie di scenari, tra colli, valli, alture e fino al mare, che mutano al variare delle stagioni , passando dal trionfo giallo dell’estate, con le immense distese di girasoli presenti un po’ ovunque, ai toni caldi dell’autunno, quando il foliage regala a questi scorci toni romantici, malinconici. Il nostro tour alla scoperta delle meraviglie toscane non può che partire da Firenze : diamo per scontato che un paio di giorni alla città di Dante bisogna riservarli, tante sono le cose da fare e vedere. Arricchito lo spirito con le bellezze fiorentine, sei pronto per scoprire la Toscana dei borghi, dei vigneti, delle campagne, dei tanti prodotti DOC e IGP che incontrerai lungo la strada.

Greve, capitale del Chianti fiorentino

Seguendo le indicazioni da Firenze Sud per Siena , la strada con cui inizia il road trip in Toscana è  la regionale 222 (Chiantigiana), che dalla periferia fiorentina si snoda lungo l’appennino e attraversa davvero molti punti di interesse, meritevoli di sosta . Del resto, mai come in questo caso, non è la destinazione, ma il viaggio stesso ad essere esperienza. Una fermata interessante, lungo la strada, è  Greve in Chianti , piccolo borgo la cui piazza principale fin dal Medioevo ha sempre esercitato la funzione di mercato. Nato come semplice dipendenza del castello di Montefioralle, grazie alla sua posizione strategica tra il Valdarno, la Val di Greve e la via che unisce Firenze a Siena attraverso le Colline del Chianti , divenne il principale centro commerciale della zona. Oggi nel centro si trovano osterie, ristoranti, attività commerciali ed artigianali; qui c’è anche il Museo del Vino, per conoscere antiche tradizioni e odierne lavorazioni del mondo enologico toscano.

Monteriggioni, inespugnabile e ospitale

Procedendo sulla SR 222 in direzione Siena, in prossimità di Castellina in Chianti prendi la SP 51 direzione  Monteriggioni : un passaggio nel borgo del XII secolo che domina la valle, protetto ancora oggi dalle imponenti mura realizzate in pietra (lunghe quasi 600 metri) in cui sono incastonate 15 torri a pianta quadrata, è doveroso.  A circondare l’altura su cui poggia il borgo, si estendono vigneti ordinati a perdita d’occhio : anche da qui arrivano le uve che contribuiscono al grande successo nel mondo dei vini toscani. Molte le aziende che offrono visite ai propri impianti o degustazioni in loco . Tra Chianti Classico, Chianti dei Colli Senesi e Bianco di Toscana c’è solo l’imbarazzo della scelta.

Monteriggioni

Siena, tutto il gusto della città del palio.

Dalla via Cassia Nord appena fuori Monteriggioni, prendi il raccordo autostradale Firenze-Siena fino all’uscita Siena Ovest , poi segui le indicazioni per il centro. Perla di assoluta bellezza,  Siena  ha conservato praticamente intatti il fascino e la forza che nei secoli ne hanno fatto un polo di vitale importanza per la vita sociale, economica e politica (oltre che artistica) della Toscana prima e di tutta Italia poi.  Intorno all’antico abitato ci sono parcheggi gratuiti o a pagamento per disfarsi - almeno qualche ora - dell’auto e avventurarsi a piedi verso la bellissima  Piazza del Campo , simbolo senese in cui si tiene il celebre Palio .

Val d’orcia: la toscana da cartolina.

Muovendo da Siena in direzione di  San Quirico D’Orcia , attraverserai il  Parco Naturale della Val D’Orcia , riconosciuto dall’Unesco patrimonio dell’Umanità per la bellezza del paesaggio. Qui si snodano  itinerari e percorsi tra luoghi e sapori per gratificare anima e corpo . Se sei alla ricerca della Toscana più instagrammata (e instagrammabile) in questo tratto di strada potrai dare davvero sfogo al tuo animo social.

Val d'Orcia

Pitigliano, echi d’antico in maremma.

Percorri la SR 2 verso Acquapendente: qui prendi la provinciale Torretta verso Grotte di Castro e poi la SR 74 verso Pitigliano. Annoverato tra i Borghi più Belli d’Italia, ha un vino che porta il suo nome e si trova nel cuore della Maremma Toscana : Pitigliano (anche soprannominato  La Piccola Gerusalemme , perché a partire dal XVI secolo ospitò una grande comunità ebraica tra le sue mura) oggi è uno dei borghi storici più affascinanti d’Italia.  Arroccato su una rupe di tufo , il paese sorge sulle valli di tre torrenti (Lente, Meleta e Prochio) e regala una meravigliosa vista sulla natura selvaggia ed incontaminata di quest’area della Maremma.

Capalbio, il salotto che attraversa i secoli

Appollaiato dove la Maremma guarda al Tirreno,  Capalbio  ha anche una parte “balneare”, in estate ritrovo dell'intellighenzia di tutta Europa e per questo soprannominata la Piccola Atene ; circondato da un ecosistema rigoglioso, il borgo antico - annoverato tra i “Borghi più Belli d’Italia” - ha radici di epoca etrusca, rovine di epoca romana e architetture rinascimentali. Entrando dalla porta Senese ti troverai immerso in un’altra epoca, specialmente nelle viuzze intorno alla Rocca Aldobrandesca .

Porto Ercole, obiettivo glamour

Da Capalbio, per chiudere questa giornata di viaggio in Toscana, ci spostiamo sul mare. Protetto da insenature naturali che lo rendono un piccolo gioiello, Porto Ercole è uno dei masterpiece di tutto l’Argentario. Il solo nome evoca scenari di  mondanità e nightlife , per cui sono d’obbligo una cena fronte mare e una romantica passeggiata tra le viuzze  prima di andare a letto.

Castiglione della pescaia, avamposto sul tirreno.

Una buona colazione a Capalbio, poi subito in auto per proseguire il viaggio iniziato ieri da Firenze. Costeggiando il Tirreno, risalendo sulla E80, in pochi chilometri scoverai un altro  diamante incastonato sulla costa degli Etruschi: Castiglione della Pescaia , il cui porto ebbe un periodo di floridezza tra il Settecento e l’Ottocento. Sono molte le costruzioni e i monumenti che si possono vedere, simboli e testimonianze del passato e della storia di questo territorio. Meritano una visita la Casa Rossa Ximenes, di origine rinascimentale, il Palazzo del Pretorio, la Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio e la Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista.

Castagneto carducci, la poesia è di casa.

Lasciato Castiglione, torna sulla E80 in direzione Donoratico , poi quando la strada si allontana dalla costa per dirigersi verso l’entroterra sarai arrivato a Castagneto Carducci.  Piccolo borgo con antiche tradizioni , è tra i più conosciuti della Costa degli Etruschi . Arroccato su una collina a pochi km dal mare, il centro abitato di Castagneto si è sviluppato intorno all’imponente castello medievale posto nel punto più alto del paese. La vicina Bolgheri  poi, con il viale dei cipressi narrato da Carducci nella sua poesia,   è una località davvero iconica della campagna toscana .

San gimignano, la manhattan del medioevo.

Il viaggio da Castagneto riprende lungo la provinciale 329 fino a rientrare sulla E80 (direzione Cecina) dove poi svoltare sulla provinciale 29 e puntare verso San Gimignano. Con  le sue torri che si elevano all’orizzonte , è davvero una delle mete più iconiche e riconoscibili di tutta la Toscana, nel cuore della Val d'Elsa , ideale per provare ad immergersi in una perfetta atmosfera medievale. Tutelata come Patrimonio dell’Unesco dal 1990,  San Gimignano  deve la sua fama all’incredibile quantità di torri costruite dal ‘300 in poi; oggi ne sono rimaste 13, ma continuano a conferire al borgo il soprannome di Manhattan del Medioevo.

San casciano val di pesa, nobili origini.

Porta sulle colline coltivate a Chianti,  San Casciano in Val di Pesa  annovera molte chiese che meritano una visita, come  la Pieve di Santa Cecilia a Decimo , poco fuori dall’abitato, citata in un documento di Carlo Magno già nel 774 e verosimilmente la più antica del territorio, poi la Pieve romanica di San Giovanni in Sugana o la Pieve di Santo Stefano a Campoli (del 903), nei pressi di Mercatale Val di Pesa. Infine, da queste parti, sorge  “Il Palagio”, la tenuta (visitabile) in cui si ritira Sting, il frontman dei Police, che qui produce ottimi vini. L’indirizzo? Via Campoli 98 in località Mercatale Val di Pesa.

San Casciano in Val di pesa

Impruneta, terra di argille.

Avvicinamento a Firenze dalle campagne, lasciando San Casciano in Val di Pesa verso  Impruneta , penultima tappa del tour prima del rientro alla base, la città del Giglio . Dopo valli, colli, vigneti, pievi e borghi dal fascino unico, resta l’ultimo passaggio per poter dire di aver davvero completato l’esperienza. L' argilla presente all'Impruneta e nelle zone circostanti è particolarmente adatta per creare un materiale duraturo e resistente, cotto nei forni per fargli acquisire la robustezza e il caratteristico colorito arancione. Oggi sono attive fornaci che adottano ancora le vecchie tecniche di produzione , risalenti alla fine dell’anno 1000, per produrre oggetti che da qui partono alla conquista dei giardini di tutto il mondo. Noi invece, ripartiamo per Firenze (sono gli ultimi 15 km) dove si chiude questa due giorni on the road per la Toscana.

Fuga in Toscana: Itinerario di 3 giorni

Ultimamente molti dei nostri lettori ci hanno tirato le orecchie perché  appena abbiamo qualche giorno libero preferiamo spostarci all’estero invece di restare in Italia e raccontare le meraviglie del nostro paese. Abbiamo promesso di rimediare e così è stato. Durante il ponte del 1 Novembre ne abbiamo approfittato per concederci qualche giorno alla scoperta di una regione che amiamo moltissimo: la Toscana .

L’idea iniziale era quella di andare in Val d’Orcia a fare qualche foto per il foliage senza prefissarci delle mete fisse, ma una ricerca tira l’altra ed è nato un vero e proprio itinerario di 3 giorni in Toscana .

Fuga in Toscana: Giorno 1

Il primo giorno è iniziato da Colle Val d’Elsa , provincia di Siena, paese famoso per la produzione del cristallo e per il Museo del cristallo. Diviso anticamente in Piano , Borgo e Castello, oggi invece è suddiviso in Colle Alta , parte vecchia, e Colle Bassa . Per gli amanti dell’arte si può visitare il  Museo civico e di arte sacra, ospitato nel palazzo dei Priori, mentre per gli amanti di storia si può osservare la  collezione del Museo Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli.  In questa collezione, tra le altre cose, sono conservate le rarissime kelebai volterrane . È d’obbligo anche una passeggiata nel Borgo medievale , molto bello, una visita al Duomo e al bellissimo Palazzo Campana .

La giornata prosegue con la visita di Castel San Gimignano (vi consigliamo di arrivare la mattina presto per trovare parcheggio), un antico borgo medievale rimasto intatto negli anni e diviso tra i comuni di Colle di Val d’Elsa e San Gimignano, sempre in provincia di Siena. Se avete poco tempo, date un’occhiata a questo Tour privato di San Gimignano che vi farà scoprire gli angoli più importanti della città.

A pomeriggio inoltrato ci dirigiamo verso il Borgo di  Volterra, una città medievale (ma di origini etrusche ), famosa per essere stata citata anche dalla scrittrice di Twilight come patria dei vampiri (i Volturi ). Il borgo è circondato da mura medievali risalenti al XIII secolo e contengono otto porte d’accesso al centro storico. Vi consigliamo di passare il tempo passeggiando per il centro storico e i vicoli più nascosti, senza itinerario prestabilito, e di respirare la bellezza e la storia di questo splendido Borgo.

Sicuramente non deve mancare una visita alla Fortezza Medicea , al Museo Etrusco , alla Pinacoteca Civica e al Museo d’Arte Sacra . Oltre al Museo, vi consigliamo di visitare la Necropoli e l’Acropoli Etrusche e il Teatro Romano che noi non abbiamo visitato per mancanza di tempo. Inoltre il panorama che si vede da Volterra è spettacolare! Finita la visita ci siamo fermati ad ammirare lo splendido tramonto sulla valle circostante e a fare qualche foto notturna, per poi tornare a Colle per la notte.

Il secondo giorno è iniziato con la visita all’ Abbazia di San Galgano , nel comune di Chiusdino a 30km da Siena, abbazia cistercense completamente in rovina e ridotta alle sole mura laterali. Fu costruita tra il 1220 ed 1268, periodo in cui in Italia si fondevano lo stile Romanico con il nascente stile Gotico, e la sua forma è la classica croce latina.

Poco distante un sentiero porta fino in cima alla collinetta dove si erge l’ Eremo di Montesiepi , famoso per la Spada nella Roccia . Questo Eremo fu costruito subito dopo la morte di Galgano sopra l’antica capanna dove visse l’ultimo anno della sua vita. La storia narra che nel giorno di Natale del 1180 Galgano, giunto sul colle di Montesiepi, infisse nel terreno la sua spada, allo scopo di trasformare l’arma in una croce.

All’interno dell’Eremo c’è infatti un masso da cui spunta una spada corrosa dagli anni e dalla ruggine, ora protetta da una teca di plexiglas. Questa spada viene spesso ricollegata a Re Artù e, ovviamente, a possibili relazioni fra la mitologia della Tavola Rotonda e la storia del santo chiusdinese.

Sempre a Chiusdino si trova il Mulino delle Pile , il famoso mulino della Mulino Bianco. Oggi è un agriturismo dove è possibile pranzare e pernottare e non è possibile visitarlo , ma noi ci siamo intrufolati ugualmente per scattare qualche fotografia!

Dopodichè ci siamo diretti verso Boccheggiano alla ricerca delle Colline Metallifere ..E le abbiamo trovate! Sembra di essere in un Gran Canyon in miniatura e lo scenario è davvero suggestivo. Queste colline costituiscono il principale e più esteso sistema collinare e montuoso dell’Antiappennino toscano e si estendono nella parte centro-occidentale della Toscana, interessando ben quattro province. Già al tempo degli Etruschi, le Colline Metallifere erano conosciute e sfruttate per i giacimenti di minerali ferrosi e nel secondo dopoguerra furono sfruttate per l’estrazione della lignite.

Lungo la strada per l’ultima tappa ci fermiamo a visitare il Ponte a Macereto , un ponte in pietra a tre arcate risalente al 1386 e ricostruito nel 1827. Oggi il ponte non è più percorribile in quanto rotto a metà.

L’ultima tappa della giornata sono le  Biancane , un parco naturale a Monterotondo Marittimo in provincia di Grosseto. In questo parco naturale ci sono diverse tipologie di manifestazioni geotermiche come soffioni, fuoriuscite di vapore dal terreno, putizze e fumarole. Il nome del parco deriva dal colore bianco delle rocce che caratterizza tutto il paesaggio.

Stanchi ed entusiasti ci siamo fermati a fotografare il tramonto in questo parco e ci siamo poi diretti verso Colle. La serata si è conclusa con una buonissima fiorentina!

Abbiamo passato la mattinata dell’ultimo giorno a Siena , un’affascinante cittadina medievale nel centro della Toscana. È piacevole camminare e perdersi nei vicoli e quartieri del centro storico, visitare Piazza del Campo  con il Palazzo Pubblico  e salire sulla Torre del Mangia,  visitare  Piazza del Duomo  e il  Battistero . Ovviamente in una mattinata abbiamo avuto solo un assaggio della bellezza di Siena, che approfondiremo maggiormente la prossima volta.

Dopo pranzo ci siamo messi in marcia per tornare verso Milano e durante il percorso ci siamo fermati al Mulinaccio di Scandicci , per approfondire date un’occhiata all’articolo Mulinaccio di Scandicci: una perla nel cuore della Toscana .

È stato un weekend intenso ma ne è valsa la pena e ci è rimasta la voglia di scoprire maggiormente questa terra, quasi vicino a casa!

Colle Val d’Elsa:

La prima domenica di ogni mese si può osservare la produzione di oggetti di cristallo durante una dimostrazione all’aria aperta che si svolge nel centro storico in Via della Misericordia (vicino al Duomo) alle ore 15.

• Museo del Cristallo:  da Pasqua a ottobre da martedì a domenica dalle 10.00 alle 12.00 e dalle 15.00 alle 19.00. Da novembre a Pasqua da martedí a venerdí dalle 15.00 alle 19.00, i fine settimana e le festività dalle 10.00 alle 12.00 e dalle 15.00 alle 19.00. L’ingresso costa €3,00.
• Museo Archeologico e il Museo Civico e Diocesano:  da maggio a settembre da martedì a domenica dalle 10.30 alle 12.30 e dalle 16.30 alle 19.30. Da ottobre ad aprile da martedì a venerdì dalle 15.30 alle 17.30, i fine settimana e le festività dalle 10.30 alle 12.30 e dalle 15.30 alle 18.30. L’entrata costa 3 euro per ognuno dei due musei.

Abbazia di San Galgano e Eremo di Montesiepi

L’ingresso all’Abbazia di San Galgano è permesso tutti i giorni  con i seguenti orari: da Novembre a Marzo dalle ore 9.00 alle 17.30 – ad Aprile, Maggio ed Ottobre dalle ore 9.00 alle 18.00 – a Giugno e Settembre dalle ore 9.00 alle 19.00 – a Luglio ed Agosto dalle ore 9.00 alle 20.00. L’ingresso costa €3,00 interno e €2,50 ridotto.

L’Eremo di Montesiepi è aperto tutti i giorni dalle ore 9.00 fino al tramonto con entrata gratuita . Ogni domenica mattina alle 11.30 si svolge la Santa Messa.

Lucca | SETTEMBRE LUCCHESE | tutto il mese

Un intero mese dedicato al divertimento, alle rievocazioni tradizionali, festival culinari e celebrazioni cittadine

Il Settembre Lucchese porta in città stand, bancarelle, fiere agricole, mostre mercato, esposizioni artigianali e soprattutto loro, le tanto attese giostre! Il parco giochi che per tutto il mese di settembre viene ospitato nel grande piazzale Don Baroni appena fuori le mura richiama, ogni anno, persone provenienti da tutta la regione, grandi o piccini che siano, bramosi di montare sulle montagne russe o sul bruco mela, sulle macchinine a scontro o fare un giro nel tunnel della paura...insomma, giochi ed installazioni per tutti i gusti, anche in tema prettamente culinario! Famosi quanto la manifestazione, i celeberrimi frati (ciambelle con il buco nel mezzo, fritte e zuccherate) o i bomboloni accompagnano - da sempre - questa manifestazione, tanto che sono diventati ormai parte della tradizione dolciaria cittadina.

Arezzo | FIERA ANTIQUARIA | 1° fine settimana del mese (31/08 - 01/09)

La più antica e la più grande fiera d'antiquariato

Molti anni fa, Ivan Bruschi dette vita ad una delle fiere più grandi ed antiche di Toscana, per non dire d'Italia: è riuscito a trasformare il suo amore per l'antiquariato, per gli oggetti unici e preziosi in un evento che ogni primo fine settimana del mese riempie le stradine del centro di Arezzo con il fascino e l'atmosfera di altri tempi.

Nonostante il nome "Aprilante", è una fiera che si tiene durante tutto l'anno! Si tratta di un mercato che viene organizzato la prima domenica del mese per le strade di questo incantevole borgo del Chianti, dove potrai trovare oggetti d'artigianato locale, vintage e prodotti della tradizione culinaria, appena fuori le porte di Firenze.

Arezzo | GIOSTRO DEL SARACINO | 1° domenica di settembre (01/09)

Rievocazione medievale profondamente radicata nelle tradizioni cittadine

La Giostra del Saracino di Arezzo è uno degli eventi più attesi del settembre toscano, un’occasione per rivivere emozioni ed avvenimenti storici, durante la quale tutta la città si trasforma in un feudo medievale e si prepara ad accogliere una settimana (quella antecedente alla giornata della Giostra vera e propria) ricca di eventi. In sostanza, si tratta di una sfida tra i 4 rioni della città che vede fronteggiarsi i cavalieri in una competizione per la vittoria della lancia d’oro, che andrà al quartiere i cui cavalieri avranno ottenuto il maggior numero di punti nel colpire - al galoppo sul proprio cavallo - uno scudo sorretto da un manichino, il Buratto . Sfilate in costumi storici, esibizioni di tamburini e sbandieratori e molto altro ancora! Pescia | PALIO CITTA’ DI PESCIA | 1° domenica di settembre (01/09)

Un'intera settimana di manifestazioni, giochi, rievocazioni storiche e delizie culinarie in provincia di Pistoia

Il famoso Palio di Pescia è un evento attesissimo dalla comunità locale e non solo: la cosiddetta Settimana del Palio darà il via alla manifestazione con una rievocazione del gioco medievale della Palla al Paniere . A seguire, cene propiziatorie dei rioni cittadini - ulteriore sfida a suon di mestoli, come si suol dire, tra i 4 rioni - sfilate in costume, esibizioni di musici e sbandieratori: una sorta di sette giorni di preparazione all’evento clou della manifestazione, il Palio vero e proprio, che si terrà domenica 4 settembre, sette giorni in cui la ridente cittadina della Valdinievole si vestirà letteralmente dei colori dei rioni che la caratterizzano e che ne animeranno le strade del centro storico. Il palio consiste in una sfida al tiro con l’arco in foggia medievale, che vedrà impegnati 4 arcieri per rione, i quali avranno a disposizione tre turni di tiro per aggiudicarsi la vittoria dell’ambito drappo.

Nozzano | IL CASTELLO RIVIVE | 1° fine settimana del mese (31/08 - 01/09)

Sapori e tradizioni del Medioevo in Lucchesia

Caratteristico paesino della Lucchesia che ospiterà questa caratteristica rievocazione medievale che coinvolgerà l’intero borgo con mercatini, artisti di strada, saltimbanchi e giocolieri, giullari e ristoratori pronti a deliziarvi con specialità locali del Medioevo! L'evento avrà inizio il 21 agosto e proseguirà durante il primo fine settimana di settembre (nei giorni 1 e 2).

Asciano | PALIO DEI CIUCHI | 2° domenica di settembre (08/09)

Corsa tradizionale dei ciuchi

Un evento che sembra essere una sorta di costante in tutta la Toscana e che vede fronteggiarsi le 7 contrade in una corsa a dorso di ciuchi, appunto, preceduta dal bellissimo corteo storico che attraversa il centro della città per arrivare allo stadio, dove, dopo l’esibizione degli sbandieratori, avrà luogo la sfida. Durante la settimana precedente, la cittadina si preparerà ad accogliere il momento clou della manifestazione con eventi culinari, degustazioni e tanta musica!

Celebrazione tradizionale della processione dei pellegrini e dei contadini in occasione dei festeggiamenti per la Vergine Maria

A Firenze l’atmosfera di festa e vacanza che ha caratterizzato i mesi estivi sembra non finire mai: anche il mese di settembre regala emozioni ed eventi dal sapore folkloristico a non finire, a partire dalla suggestiva Festa della Rificolona , nata per celebrare la nascita della Vergine Maria l’8 settembre. Durante la vigilia, viene rievocata l’antica processione dei pellegrini che partivano dalle proprie abitazioni prima dell’alba con delle grosse lanterne per farsi luce. Oggi, i partecipanti attraversano il centro storico di Firenze con lanterne coloratissime che accendono il cielo della città con le loro luci vivaci ed allegre.

Prato | SACRA CINTOLA | 8 settembre

Una reliquia preziosa dà vita a manifestazioni in tutta la città

L’8 settembre è un giorno importante per la tradizione religiosa della città di Prato: è uno dei 5 giorni in cui la sacra cintola della Vergine Maria (chiamata anche sacro cingolo ) viene esposta al pubblico riunito in piazza, dopo esser stata portata in processione dal Duomo, dove viene gelosamente custodita sotto chiave, in una cappella in cui un ciclo di affreschi di Agnolo Gaddi (La Leggenda del Sacro Cingolo, 1392-95) rappresenta e descrive la storia dell’arrivo della cintola a Prato. Oltre all’8 settembre, giorno della celebrazione della Vergine Maria, la sacra cintola viene esposta altre 4 volte nell’arco dell’anno, tra cui il 25 e 26 dicembre.

Una nuova tradizione nel sud della Toscana

Nonostante sia una sorta di new entry nel calendario degli eventi locali, questa manifestazione non vi deluderà in quanto a spasso e divertimento. Si tratta di un’altra sfida, durante la quale due coppie di atleti dovranno condurre un barellino con sopra il classico contenitore che veniva usato per portare l'uva durante la vendemmia ma...non finisce qui! Per aumentare la difficoltà (il contenitore mica poteva essere trasportato vuoto!), la penalità alla partenza - ovvero i chili con cui riempirlo - viene decisa da una gara degli arcieri, disputata ovviamente prima, nel pomeriggio. Il tutto sarà accompagnato da musica, ottimo cibo e vino, spettacoli in stile medievale.

Oltre a questa sfida competitiva, vi saranno anche esibizioni del "Teatro di Strada", durante le quali i 4 rioni cittadini porteranno in scena il lavoro svolto durante tutto l'anno per la preparazione di suggestive coreografie, balli e spettacoli basate su uno specifico tema.

Marty Abrams, father of the modern action figure, brought back Mego. So what's next?

World-renowned toy company Mego Corporation, the inventor of the modern collector’s market, is back in the toy game after 36 years. The Mego brand, a modest dime store toy company founded in 1956 by David and Madeline Abrams, exploded in popularity when their son Marty became president of the Mego Corp. in 1971.

With an excellent business sense and a sharp eye for toys and what the market was lacking, Abrams began making deals with pre-existing licenses and intellectual properties. By being the first brand to produce toys based on television, movie, and comic book characters, Mego Corp. created a playing field where children and new collectors could see their favorite characters come to life in their hands.

My personal favorite Mego property is without a doubt Micronauts. From its humble beginnings in Japan — created by Takara, who wasn’t quite sure what to do with the science fiction line of robot toys — Abrams figured out a way to bring the toys to the States and market them in a way that would make their popularity soar.

By the early '80s, Mego Corporation could no longer compete with the popularity of the new Star Wars action figures by Kenner. Mego filed for bankruptcy and officially closed its doors in 1983. Years passed by, and not a peep was heard from the once toy giant. Until today, when Hasbro Toys came knocking with an opportunity that would lead to the revival of Mego Corp. and allow a new generation of fans to collect these charming '70s-style action figures once again.

SYFY WIRE spoke with Abrams of Mego Corporation to talk shop about Mego, the toy industry, and some of what fans can expect from Mego in the not-too-distant future!

I wanted to start off with Micronauts. Since Mego Corporation was focusing so heavily on the superhero brands at the time, was doing a deal with Takara Tomy and its robot toys a big stray for you guys?

We were in the toy business. Going for Micronauts was a natural progression of what we were currently doing. I think it’s funny that the first thing you’re touching on is Micronauts; everyone else is focusing on the Mego line that you can find in the stores. The basic superheroes, Star Trek , and the Planet of the Apes series we do with the licensed stuff we have.

Micronauts came in in 1976, and we had been doing licensed stuff of anything that was out there on the current marketplace. When we decided to go down the Micronaut road, it just became an extension of the Mego brand, and the branding we were doing. We were making action figures, we were making playsets, and making toys of multiple figures within brands. Micronauts had all of the above, plus one additional piece of the pie, which was construction and building. You could literally build your own brand. You could take characters apart and put them back together again. It was an art form, and really, just a fun brand for us to do.

I saw that Hasbro did some work with Micronauts a few years back — is there any chance at a Mego Corporation Micronauts revival since your new action figure line has been so successful?

The answer to that question is that the reason Mego Corporation is back today is because of Micronauts and Hasbro. When I brought Mego out of bankruptcy, the key IP at the time was Micronauts. Hasbro came around and bought the rights to Micronauts from me personally because the Micronauts IP was still mine. And that’s how I got the money to go back and launch the Mego Corporation revival with the products you’re seeing today.

Micronauts was, for all intents and purposes, the predecessor to Transformers . You’d referred to them earlier as Takara Tomy, but back then that wasn’t the company’s name; it was just Takara. When we hooked up with them, Mego Corporation wasn’t just the first company to create licensed action figures, but we were the first company to do business with a major Japanese toy company. When I made that original deal with Takara, that deal with the manufacturers that first year made the toys too expensive for consumers, and we couldn’t make any money. We had to turn around and pay them a royalty and then ship the products out of the factories in Japan and over to China.

But once we did that, we were able to manufacture Micronauts at a cost that was acceptable for American consumers to buy at the right price. Micronauts was a huge hit for us. Not only in America, but we had worldwide rights for distribution in Europe as well as South America — we sold them everywhere! We did that for three years, and then Star Wars came out, and that really kicked our butts. So we had to go back to Takara and their design team, this is back in 1980, to redesign the product line to be able to compete with Star Wars [figures]. We had to find a way to take Micronauts and really build a brand. Which we did , by the way!

We started seeing what was happening in the Japanese market, because while the toys weren’t quite transforming, they did transform on some level. We said, "Let’s put hinges on the Micronauts," and when that became new, they became Transformers by the end of 1981. Micronauts were the prequel to Transformers. And when we were going to relaunch Micronauts with the Transformers connection, we just didn’t have enough staying power in the industry. Our banks pulled our bag lines and we went into bankruptcy. And that’s when Hasbro took it over and built Transformers.

So, to answer your question, Hasbro owns Micronauts and has for about the last eight years or so. They’re in the process of doing what they do best, which is delivering movies and television and tons of ideas to toys. Among everything, Micronauts is one of the brands that they’re doing. Hasbro is building a universe, like the MCU. They have five key brands in that writing room, which is MASK, ROM, G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and one more, probably Transformers.

Now that Mego action figures are back on the shelf and they’re doing well, what are the biggest differences you’re seeing from a business perspective now as opposed to Mego’s original run in the '70s and '80s?

It’s clearly the digital Amazon position and buying online directly from the company. There are companies that buy from you and there are resellers that sell on Amazon directly, Walmart directly, Target directly. That whole level of being able to purchase instantaneously all over the world from hundreds of different websites that all have your brand. It just makes your product get to that many more people that much quicker. There’re more eyes on your product from all different angles, faster. And back then, we were ahead of the collector’s market. In fact, we created the collector’s market! Even our Sky Dancers, which sold 35 million units, is what created the flying superhero toy.

That’s why we relaunched Mego. When we were doing the figures, we owned at any given time DC and all their brands and Marvel with all of their brands. So, between the license and everything under it, we owned the rights to just hundreds of different characters. You can see it today with just the Marvel universe and the interchangeability. We turned around and we branded it "The World’s Greatest Superheroes." It was a collective. When we did Star Trek and Planet of the Apes , then the TV shows like CHiPS and Fonzie from Happy Days , it became a collector’s market.

When Mego went out of business, that market didn’t die. It just made us stop adding characters to our umbrella. But that’s when people who wanted the characters started trading figures back and forth at shows, between collectors, and leading up to the digital age where these toys were being sold on eBay.

Knowing what I know today, I see why I’ve been called the father of the modern action figure. Even if there were some better figures out there at the time, like Star Wars . And there are other IPs today, like Masters of the Universe , that are collectible, but their parent companies don’t have that massive presence of collectability with lots of brands under it.

Speaking of collectability in regard to Mego Corporation’s return: We now live in a world with a big and prevalent pop culture convention presence. Are you available for fans to meet you and see Mego touring on the convention circuit?

All of the above — last year we showed for the very first time at San Diego Comic-Con, and we are going back. We will be in Louisville, Denver, Minneapolis, Providence, Richmond … we will probably be at a ton of comic cons coming up.

We will set up a booth, and I sign autographs next to some of the bigger guys like Winkler and Shatner. It’s nice, because people at conventions will buy my Star Trek figures, and then they can take it over for both me and Shatner to sign. But I know which conventions I can and can’t compete at — Mego is too small, and sometimes there’s just too much noise. But at the smaller shows, people are excited to meet us and talk to us, and we’re creating new customers all the time.

Let’s segue to a more personal level. Putting aside all financial costs and difficulties of obtaining licenses aside, what would be the ideal toy that you'd want to make?

I’ll speak as a fan for a moment, but to be honest, I just can’t wait to see what Hasbro does with Micronauts. I really feel that it was the greatest toy that I ever made. From its roots with Takara, this tiny Japanese company that didn’t know what to do with these toys, we just turned them into a brand and made them take off. Even back then, we made several hundred million dollars on Micronauts. In today’s money, you can times that by four. And this all happened without the help of Nickelodeon and other TV networks, because that just didn’t exist yet. It was completely market-driven by our little company. It was such an accomplishment that I just can’t wait to see what Hasbro has in mind for them.

Okay, I have to ask because fellow KISS fans want to know. Are the Spaceman and Catman action figures on their way?

Yes! When they’re coming I can’t say. My people would kill me. But yes, they will be coming out. They’re on their way.

Do you have any hobbies or interests that your fans, friends, or family may not expect from you?

Here’s the real story and the reason I was so susceptible to relaunching Mego as a brand. I’ve been in the toy industry for many, many years. I’ve created huge amounts of product. But I was so excited to go back and start doing the Mego brand again. You’re really talking to one of the most boring people in the United States. I do nothing but think about toys all the time. Sure, I like going to the Yankees game or Madison Square Garden. Quite candidly, my grandson is a world-famous wildlife photographer, and I love going to Africa with him to take pictures of the rhinos and lions and leopards.

I love that, but there's no charge, there’s no kick or emotional explosion like creating a product. Seeing it rendered from three-dimensional, then seeing it get manufactured, then selling your brand to the marketplace. There’s nothing like that. So that’s really where I spend 92 percent of my time.

And as for Mego, we plan on expanding. We’re going to get bigger and bigger. We made plans with Stan Lee and his estate prior to his passing last year. There’s a lot more exciting stuff for Mego literally as we speak.

Everything Old Is New Once More!

Some of the most beloved stories in the world feature a return.

Be it Ellen Ripley in Aliens, or Han Solo in Return Of The Jedi, these tales successfully resonate with fans by bringing back the familiar faces of those that they love and placing them in a situation where they can eventually emerge triumphantly. Be it in one form, or another. 

Interestingly, this scenario is not one that is solely limited to the big screens of Tinseltown. 

No, even in the most unexpected of places – such as within the far-flung reaches of the toy industry – can such a successful return occur. Just ask the folks at a little place called MEGO.

The Early Days Of Mego

Originally founded in 1954 by David and Madeline Abrams, there was a time when that name was synonymous with quality action figures.

Years before Kenner came along and revolutionized the industry with their hugely popular Star Wars line, this Big Apple-based toy manufacturer was churning out beautifully crafted pieces based on characters from a wide variety of major licenses.

From DC Comics to Planet Of The Apes, it seemed as though MEGO could do no wrong in dominating the boy’s action figure market. And when their Star Trek figures eventually beamed down and became one of the top sellers of the mid-1970s, MEGO looked poised and ready to boldly go where no toy company had gone before. 

In fact, things were so good for the company that 20th Century Fox eventually gave MEGO the first official crack at the Star Wars license prior to the film’s release back in the summer of 1977.

And yet, by the early 1980s this story looked to be all but over. 

After a string of less than successful attempts to reclaim some of the glitz and glamor of their former days, the doors looked to close on MEGO for the last time. Or, so we thought. 

The Return Of MEGO

Jump ahead to 2018 and Marty Abrams, the man oftentimes regarded as the father of the action figure, shocks the pop culture landscape at San Diego Comic-Con.

To the surprise of all, he announces that the beloved MEGO brand will be returning to store shelves for the first time in over three decades! Exciting to be sure, but on the surface, this may have looked to be a rather unwise move. 

After all, it had only been ten months since Toys R Us, the one-time undisputed king of the retail toy market, had filed for bankruptcy and announced that they would be closing all of their physical store locations across the United States.

Up until that point, they had served as the unsung hero of the collector market – offering older fans a wide selection of brands and exclusives ranging from Marvel Legends to the Star Wars Black Series, and everything in between.

In addition, these new figures would still retain the vintage charm of their predecessors. Would fourteen points of articulation, cloth costumes, and a selection of bright color form accessories be able to compete with the premium sculpting, crisp paintwork, and realistic accessories of modern lines?

If the MEGO brand was indeed returning, it would need the support of older fans and collectors who had grown up with their products throughout the ’70s and ’80s. A quality product though it may be, this was a series of action figures that would appeal exclusively to a certain sort of collector.

It couldn’t just be placed on toy store shelves alongside brands like Beyblade and Barbie and expect to survive in the toy market of the 21st century. Especially when given the wide variety of products available to consumers, and the limited shelf space available at the modern-day retailer.

Yet, just like Han Solo being freed from the carbonite, MEGO was not without friends!

And, friends in high places for that matter.

Enter Target

In a retail landscape now void of the Toys R Us mega giant (at least in the United States), this new kid on the block would fearlessly step up and declare to the world that Target was going to fill the hole left in the collector market moving forward – a move that would also include aiding in getting this newest generation of MEGO figures back on to store shelves once more. 

Again, this was all very exciting to learn. But, could it all be successfully pulled off?

Well, in the words of one Cosmo Kramer: “You’d Better Believe It, Buddy!”    

It has now been over two years since the announcement was first made that the MEGO brand was returning to shelves. More retail and specialty stores from across the globe have begun carrying these new figures.

Marty Abrams and his team have once again churned out an impressive selection of beautifully crafted pieces from a wide variety of major licenses – this time under the slightly tweaked moniker of Marty Abrams Presents MEGO. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re simply rehashing the same old toys as back in the day. 

No sir, not by a longshot!

The “New” MEGO

Sure, there are some old favorites that fans are certain to remember from back in the day. Batman. Captain James T. Kirk. Joe Namath. However, in this new age of toy collecting, MEGO has also flushed out its selection with several new entries that were previously never offered as one of their beloved action figures.

From Jimi Hendrix to The Creature From The Black Lagoon, MEGO is now offering a slew of brand new pieces that are seeing the light of day for the first time in history. Each as exquisitely crafted as any modern era action figure from the likes of Hasbro, Mattel, or Diamond Select Toys.

And, these new figures are not just limited to the classic IPs that predate the early 1980’s. Many modern era properties are also present on the pegs and brandishing the MEGO logo with a sense of unabashed pride! 

Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Data. Khan. Saru. Captain Christopher Pike. Ultraman. The Fly. Gene Simmons. Stan Lee. Teen Wolf. And, this is just the beginning! The top of the proverbial iceberg. 

Not enough? Well, the artisans at MEGO have also gone back to the drawing board as it were to redesign some of their more classic figures with a much more screen-accurate appearance.

Does anyone remember the original Gorn from the Star Trek Aliens line? Yeah, you know the one! The dull brown lizard with the body of an ape and the attire of a classic era Klingon? Yeah, that Gorn. The one that looked nothing like the iconic reptilian warrior featured in one of the most memorable Star Trek episodes of all time.

For years, fans had hoped to see a new MEGO version released that better resembled the classically cold-blooded foe. And now, nearly a decade after Diamond Select Toys took an impressive crack at the classic critter, they finally have it!

This new version gives the character a complete and total overhaul, with a more accurate appearance and glow-in-the-dark accents for some added toyetic appeal!

This isn’t your daddy’s Gorn!

Sure, he still features some very puzzling accessories in the form of a bright red phaser and communicator, but the new figure is so great that there is no doubt longtime fans and collectors will be more than willing to let these two small details slide to the side.  

Whether you’re looking for a classic piece you remember from your childhood or something new that is being offered in the line for the very first time, there is no denying that it is a very exciting time to be a MEGO fan once more! And, in this day and age, why shouldn’t that be the case?

It’s All About Timing!

We are living within the golden age of toy collecting which, when coupled with the massive power of nostalgia, has allowed for some of the biggest names in the industry to return to store shelves in new and unprecedented ways.

Sure, the stores nowadays seem crammed with everything ranging from Roblox to RoboSapien – but that is in addition to a near swirling whirlpool of classically based brands that constantly look to clog the pegs.

Transformers. Star Wars. G.I. Joe. Micro Machines , Hot Wheels. Barbie. LEGO. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Alien. Predator. Godzilla. King Kong. Jurassic Park. Bucky O’Hare. Matchbox. DC. Marvel. Power Rangers. Masters Of The Universe. My Little Pony. Strawberry Shortcake. Hello Kitty. Polly Pocket. These timeless brands continue to be ever-present atop the pop culture landscape with new and exciting additions being released to each one on a near-weekly basis. 

This really shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise. After all, the majority of toy buyers nowadays are adults. Now, that’s not to say that today’s kids don’t play with toys. My daughter loves her LOL Dolls, and my nephew has always loved Star Wars. However, when it comes down to it, there is no denying that iPads and iPhones have taken the place of plastic and rubber during the majority of playtime. 

That being said, it is the adults who are now supporting the majority of the toy industry – men and women who spent the Saturday mornings of their youth with the likes of Optimus Prime and Jem, and who look to these beloved brands of yesteryear to help them reclaim a small piece of the childhood now far behind.

It is here where we find fans and collectors tirelessly scouring stores and combing through cyberspace in search of their beloved plastic heroes – a place where the relaunched MEGO brand now calls home and looks to show the world that everything old really is new again!

While there may have been a time when it looked as though the story was over for the Abrams family and their beloved company, MEGO has defied all odds and risen from the ashes of what was to soar like the Phoenix with such big names as Hasbro, Mattel, LEGO, and The Pokémon Company in a marketplace where the collector is now the king!

The Hero Has Returned. The Terminator is Back! 

And now, the quest begins anew. 

How will the hero emerge in the end? We can’t say for sure. However, come what may, one thing is for certain – it sure is great to have MEGO back at retail and specialty stores once more!

MeGo is a robot who appears in the episode of the same name and Revenge @ Tech Fest as the main antagonist. MeGo is shown to be obsessed with Hudson and will do anything to get him all to itself. It was broken since Double G pushed it off the roof for holding Triple G hostage. However, it reappears in Revenge @ Tech Fest , where it is rebuilt, but goes rogue trying to get revenge on Double G and Triple G. At the end of the episode, it blows up. It was never seen again after Revenge @ Tech Fest.

MeGo was first seen in " MeGo the Freakish Robot ", when a British technology company named "Robotamus" gave MeGo to Babe and Kenzie so that they could make a game based on his abilities. Upon meeting Hudson , MeGo quickly becomes infatuated with Hudson, and when he has to go with Triple G to Las Vegas for the MMA fights, it immediately sees Trip as a rival who wants to steal Hudson from it. So, it holds Trip hostage and is about to chuck him off the roof of the Game Shakers building. However, the rest of the Game Shakers find out, and MeGo reveals his motives for his wrongdoings. Hudson then says to MeGo that killing Trip would hurt his feelings, making MeGo reluctant to do so. But then, Double G chucks it off the roof, and Robotamus gets back the pieces of the mangled MeGo.

In " Revenge @ Tech Fest ", MeGo is rebuilt by Robotamus and it remembers Double G's mistreatment of him and the Game Shakers doing hardly a thing about it, so it goes to get revenge on them. It sneaks to Tech Fest, steals the Octopie costume, and badly injures Double G's arm. It then holds Bunny and Ruthless hostage so that they won't be able to help the Game Shakers. Lastly, it proceeds to hold Trip hostage (again), while taking Hudson with it to Cancun. However, when Double G comes back with a trionic right arm, MeGo is surprised, and a fight breaks out. The Girls Who Code then programs MeGo to explode. Bunny and Ruthless then escape from captivity and quickly get Dub away from MeGo. However, they almost forget Hudson, and Trip then moves Hudson away from MeGo. MeGo then says its last words before exploding into nothingness.

Mego 50th Anniversary World’s Greatest Super Heroes Wave 3 Revealed

Mego has been delighting collectors with their super retro and nostalgic 50th Anniversary World’s Greatest Super Heroes Figures and at this year’s Power Con Mego Meet Panel, they revealed Wave 3! We have also discovered Wave 3 up for preorder on BBTS, but are shown as sold out. These new Mego figures are spectacular as I own most of the first two waves. Wave 1 included Superman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Shazam, and Flash. Wave 2 consisted of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Reverse Flash and Green Arrow! These 8″ figures have amazing high quality soft goods costumes just like the vintage Megos. And who could forget those hilarious but nostalgic plastic “oven mitts” for gloves! In what is being dubbed Mego Wave 18, which is the third wave of the 50th Anniversary World’s Greatest Super Heroes, Friend of Toy Habits, Absolutely Retro , has all the figures up for preorder! Which is great news since BBTS is sold out and EE doesn’t even have them up for preorder yet. Frank Wojo and his team at Absolutely Retro do an incredible job at packing the figures in very good condition, and making sure they get to you safe and sound! Red Tornado

Red Tornado is a fictional superhero character in comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dick Dillin, and first appeared in Justice League of America #64 in 1968.
