RC Controls for Model Boats

Looking for rc controls confused about the best option for radio controlled boats here you'll find my humble opinion on 2.4ghz remote control systems, am, fm, pistol grip and stick radios..

RC controls systems have changed a lot over the last few years, especially since the 2.4GHz systems started to appear. As with a lot of electronics, especially in the RC field, prices have come down significantly. This in of itself has helped open the hobby to more people across the world.

While a lot of the technology has changed that makes the systems go, the hardware looks and operates much the same. A couple of things to note: The size and weight of the receiver has decreased significantly, while surprisingly, the transmitters are about the same size as they were 30 years ago.

RC Controls Components

Most RC systems you buy will include:

• Transmitter
• Battery holder
• Switch harness

Some systems come with servos, but it seems because the variety of uses and applications have widened, less and less systems come bundled this way any more.

Depending on what type of RC boat you're building, here are some other components you may need to complete the control system:

• RC Servos - for rudder control, sail sheet, or throttle for gas or nitro engines etc.
• Battery charger and rechargeable batteries
• ESC (Electronic Speed Control)

RC Controls Layout

Most Radios are made and marketed toward either the RC plane or RC car/buggy markets. To my knowledge there are no optimized RC systems strictly for boats.

As a result the transmitters you'll find are either  Pistol Grip  - developed for RC cars, or  Stick  generally intended for RC planes.

It seems, maybe not too surprising, that pistol grip radios are favored by those running high speed boats such as hydros, tunnel hulls, mono-hulls.

Stick Radios

Stick radios are often seen as more universal. If you need multiple functions - say four or more, you're not likely to find it on a pistol grip. Stick radios are often favored by those who have had exposure to RC helicopters, airplanes and RC robotics.

Which one is "better" for RC boats is entirely a matter of taste. Use whatever you feel more comfortable with. Generally, if you are more interested in RC cars than planes, let that be a clue as to what to try first and vice versa, of course.

Pistol Grip

I don't like pistol grips. I'm not knocking it - these systems work great for a lot of people. I'm a south-paw (left handed for my non-US visitors), so I could never get my hands to do what I wanted them to with a pistol grip - it was very frustrating. I may have tried harder if I hadn't been "brought up" with stick radios.

Dual purpose - Air/Ground

Before I got my Tactic TTX-404, my previous systems were purchased for the dual purpose of air/ground. At the time I still thought I'd be able to learn how to fly RC planes. I gave up that idea 20 years ago.

Today things have changed. If you are looking for a dual purpose air/ground radio, the 2.4GHz Spread Spectrum systems is pretty much it. The 72MHz band is dedicated to Aircraft and the 75MHz to Ground. Don't violate these FCC rules, they can confiscate your equipment - model and all.

2.4GHz Spread Spectrum

For buying new I would only consider a 2.4GHz Spread Spectrum system. It's simply ingenious the way it's designed.

There are 100 frequencies within the 2.4GHz band and shared with anything from remote car door openers to cordless phones.

Here are a few notes about the 2.4GHz Spread Spectrum:

• A warning - if you intend to use the radio for RC submarines use a conventional 27 or 75 MHz system. The higher frequency of 2.4GHz will not penetrate water, and will be useless.
• There are a lot of systems to choose from. Futaba is a name-brand that will cost you top-dollar. The 6EX has features you'll never use for boats - exotic mixing options for helicopters, v-tails, exponential motion etc. On the other hand, the build quality is top notch.
• The low-end holds players like Hobby King (www.hobbyking.com) where you'll get a 6-channel transmitter and radio for $25. I wouldn't have the nerve to ask about build quality at that price.
• Keep in mind there is sometimes a "Mode 1" or "Mode 2" option. This refers to which side (left or right) that the throttle stick will be at. In plain text - which stick will stay in its vertical position when you let go.

Buying used

If I were considering a used system, I'd look for a Brand-name Spread Spectrum or ditto 75MHz radio on ebay.

I'd be hesitant to buy:

• heavily used gear
• old stuff (say more than 5 years old)
• anything AM
• pistol grip

Pillaging an RC toy

OK, don't laugh, but a number of tinkerers have had great success stripping the RC controls from toy trucks. This is an economical option if you're on a tight budget and will operate within a limited range. I would expect the range to be around 100ft, possibly even less.

Conclusion and Final Thought on RC controls

Personally, I would not buy new or used AM or FM gear. I have a feeling we're just entering the 2.4GHz Spread Spectrum era in RC controls. I would not be surprised if prices on brand name systems will come down in the next year or two.

For RC boaters a lot of high-end radios are loaded with mixing functions you don't need, or plainly can't use. If you're looking for dual purpose Air/Ground - by all means - it's a whole other story and the sky is the limit.

For RC boats, I'd look for a relatively basic 2.4GHz Channel Hopping system. That pretty much excludes the low-end such as many Hobby King radios around $25.

There are other brands though. The Spectrum DX5e for instance will cost you $80 for Transmitter and Receiver and I've heard good things about them. Here are a few more to consider:

RC Sailboat Controls – Radio Layout, Radio Setup

RC Sailboat Controls are rather different then your typical Radio Control.

We will first look at what channels on the radio control transmitter, control which part of the RC Sailboat and then we will look at the specific setup concerning the radio gear on an RC Sailboat.

Transmitter Channels and Controls – RC Sailboat Controls

The most common type of transmitter for RC Sailboats are the stick type transmitters . The stick type transmitter allows the ease of use over the sail control. On a stick type transmitter referring to the image below, the left

side channel, typically throttle on an airplane controls the Sails. Moving the left side stick up or down would draw the sail in or let the sail out. Motion on the stick is vertically.

The stick on the right hand side controls the rudder on the RC Sailboat. The rudder channel operates as like any other rudder channel. Motion on the stick is horizontally.

These two channels are the required minimum for RC Sailboat Controls. You can see all the extra switches and controls on the radio to the right. These may be used for controlling those fancy features on your RC Sailboat. In some cases these extra features include alternate lighting, winches, or anything else to make the sailboat appear and operate more scale like.

Radio System Controls – RC Sailboat Controls

RC Radio Receiver

Now that we have talked about the transmitter we will look at the rest of the components that are required in order to run an RC Sailboat. The component that is responsible for talking to the transmitter is the receiver. The receiver is what talks to the transmitter and then converts the radio signal to an electrical signal that can be used to control the rudder and sails of a sailboat. The reciver can be purchased with the transmitter if you choose to take that route. Purchasing a transmitter/receiver combination is more common when building your own boats.

Receiver Battery – RC Sailboat Controls

To power the radio equipment a standard receiver battery is required. This is a battery that operates on 4.8-6.0v. Although a 4 cell disposable AA case can be used, it is highly recommended for an RC sailboat to use a rechargeable battery . The main reason is to ensure the battery pack can supply a sufficient amount of current to the servos. For larger RC sailboats a rechargeable battery is a requirement. The average user would use a 4.8-6.0v NiMh pack however LiFE, Li-ion, LiPo packs are available but be certain to include a Voltage Regulator in your system to limit the voltage.

 Sail Servo – RC Sailboat Controls

The most important servo for an RC Sailboat is of course the Sail Servo. The sail servo comes in two different styles that are most common. Each style has its own specific set of advantages and disadvantages. The first  style of sail servo that we will talk about is the sail winch servo.

The sail winch servo as pictured on the right hand side uses a drum like wheel to house the sail line. When the drum rotates the line is either let out or brought in. The Sail winch servo typically allows for 3 rotations of the drum with

torque specs around the 150 oz-in / 11 kg-cm. The biggest difference is that these torque specs are at a relatively short distance from the center point of the drum. This small distance increases the amount of torque relative to the next sail servo type that we will be looking at.

Sail Winch Servo Advantages:

• Amount of force generated to pull in the sails
• Amount of  total line length (travel) that can be brought in – approximately 3 revolutions of the drum
• Relatively Small Space Requirement, even with larger servo sizes

Sail Winch Servo Disadvantages:

• Slow Reaction time relative to transmitter input as winch must rotate up to 3 times

Sail Arm Servo – RC Sailboat Controls

The other Sail Servo style is the arm type . The arm type sail servo uses quite a long arm in order to get an acceptable amount of line draw. As you may expect this operates nearly the same as a standard servo where the only difference is the servo arm itself. For a typical one meter Sailboat, you would require a servo of this style that has at least 150 oz-in / 11 kg-cm of torque as a minimum. This style servo requires more torque then a winch servo as the amount of force produced at the end of the arm is reduces due to the length of the arm.

Sail Arm Servo Advantages:

• Very quick response time vs the Sail winch Servo
• More servo options as any standard servo can be used with a long sail arm. Options for very high torque servos are available
• Line has less chance of getting tangles or wrapped upon itself as compared to the winch style servo

Sail Arm Servo Disadvantages:

• Require a lot of space due to the radius of the outer point of the sail servo arm
• Lower amount of Line Draw force due to length of Arm requiring higher torque at the servo for equal performance that of a winch style servo
• Generally has a smaller total line length(travel) that can be brought in resulting in lower amount of sail movement (travel)

RC Boat: T24 Tug

The T24 Tugboat is a beautiful, classic wooden tug that is both practical and charming in its traditional design. At 24 inches long, the Tug is easy to transport, but big enough to handle heavy seas and rough weather on big lakes or open bays. The RC Tugboat is electric powered with a full power radio and runs in both forward and reverse. Originally designed to place marks for model sailboat racing, the Tug is very maneuverable which makes it great for running obstacle courses, chasing swimmers, and rescuing other boats as well! Whether used as a work tug during races or a cruising pleasure vessel, this RC boat is sure to delight.

The Tug was designed to be extremely seaworthy; the traditional hull design allows the weight of the electric driving motor and the batteries to be placed low in the hull for ultimate stability. A remarkable feature of the hull design is that, when running at a certain speed, the shape of the hull causes the water to move around the boat in such a way only the bottom of the Tug is in contact with the water and the sides are left virtually dry! In this mode the tug moves through the water easily and very fast. The bottom of the tug is shaped like a wave and the water around it takes on a similar wave shape, which is very beautiful to see in still water.  

The T24 RC Tugboat is an exceptional rescue boat for saving your sailboats that sailed out of range or are stuck in bushes or on a distant shore. If your sailboat is stuck in bushes or a shore, the Tug, along with a  Retrieval Arm  that is an optional addition to your kit, can rescue the sailboat and allow you to continue your sailing fun. The Retrieval Arm sticks out to the side of the tug and hooks on the forestay of the boat to be rescued. Once hooked, the arm swings back and tows the rescued boat behind the Tug. The Tug’s radio range is considerably more than that of Tippecanoe RC Sailboats because the Tug’s antenna is slightly higher up inside the wheelhouse. The placement of the antenna higher above the water extends the effective range. Due to this, the Tug can also rescue your sailboat if it has sailed out of range. Since it is difficult to time the approach right to catch the forestay with a distant perspective, a different rescue method is used for long distance rescues. We recommend using a Styrofoam float on a 10 foot line and circling the boat to be rescued once or twice. This allows the line to catch the keel of the sailboat and be towed in. The Styrofoam float keeps the sailboat above water.

Q: Is this boat powered by an electric motor?

• No, the Voyager 400 is an unmotorized sailboat, powered only by wind. The Voyager 400 includes a battery-powered two-channel radio-controlled transmitter that controls the rudder and sails. You use the rudder to turn the boat. You use the sail control to move the sail angle in and out to take advantage of the wind based on wind direction and speed.

Q: Is this driven by a motor?

• No, there is no motor. The Voyager 400 is powered by wind in the sails and controlled by RC which manipulates the sails and the rudder.

Q: How tall is this boat?

• The Voyager 400 is 26.5-inches (672mm) tall, from bottom of keel to top of the mast. The Voyager 400 rises 21 inches above the water surface.

Q: How wide is this boat?

• The Voyager 400 is 4-inches (100mm) wide.

Q: How fast does the Voyager go?

• This all depends on the winds. But we don’t recommend using in a gusty breeze or a heavy winds above 15 mph.

Q: Can these be used in saltwater?

• Should be okay, except it is not designed for use in any significant waves or winds.

Q: Is the Voyager 400 radio controlled?

• Yes, the Voyager 400 is controlled by two servos. One for the rudder and the other for the sail angle to catch the wind.

Q: What is required?

• Four AA batteries for the transmitter and you will need light winds or a slight breeze.

Q: Is the Voyager 400 fully assembled?

• Yes, the Voyager 400 is RTR (Ready To Run). The only thing you need to do is install four AA alkaline batteries in the transmitter and charge the included LiPo battery located in the boat. That LiPo battery powers the radio control receiver and the servos located inside the boat.

Q: How is the LiPo battery charged?

• This is done by connecting the battery to a port in the back of the transmitter. Typically takes 15 minutes to charge.

Q: What is the frequency used? Is a license required?

• 2.4Ghz. No license is required.

Q: How do I open the hatch to get inside the boat?

• Find the “table” on the deck and turn that 90 degrees to release the latch holding the hatch down to the deck of the boat.
