http://www.consolidatedyachts.com/history

History 1850’s: G.W. Horton jr. superintended the laying of a marine railway on the east shore of Pilot Avenue for the purpose of hauling and launching vessels for a Mr. Underhill of New Rochelle.

1863: David Carll bought the property at East Pilot Avenue from G. W. Horton Jr. and officially established his shipyard. In 1866 David Carll builds the 106 ton c.b. schooner yacht VESTA for Pierre Lorrilard Jr.. Vesta competed in the Great Ocean Race of 1866 with the full keel schooners Fleetwing, and Henrietta.

1867: The old U.S. battleship U.S.S. North Carolina is bought as salvage by David Carll beached at his yard and salvaged for good timber and hardware used in future building including that of the first bridge connecting City Island to the mainland.

1886: August 6th of that year, Henry Piepgras a shipbuilder and Naval Architect who owned and operated a yard at Pottery Beach in Brooklyn, buys the David Carll Shipyard . At City Island he introduces construction in steel and iron to compliment building in wood.

1889: Henry Piepgras builds the steel schooner yacht Constellation designed by Edward Burgess . At 136’ the largest steel schooner yacht yet built in the country. The yard is busy with upwards of 150 employees.

1899: In May of this year 65 year old Henry Piepgras sells his yard to a syndicate led by Robert Jacob , a businessman, yachtsman. Jacob expands the yard operations with new railways, sheds and a sail loft to be occupied by Ratsey & Lapthorn Sailmakers.

World War I and II: The Jacob Yard was gears for war time production building Harbor tugs and Subchasers as well as yacht conversions for Patrol Boats during the WWI. During the second World War built 136’ YMS Minesweepers, 136’ PCS Subchasers, Harbor Tugs, 70’ Vosper style PT Boats as well as much conversion work for yachts to Patrol Boats.

1946: Seeing the last of government contracts and the trend towards smaller yachts with less maintenance the Robert Jacob yard is sold to Consolidated Shipbuilding. Consolidated established in the 1890’s had operated for many years out of Morris Heights area on the East River and were famous for building mostly power yachts up to and over 200’. Over a two year period they would relocate to City Island. Consolidated Shipbuilding continued building yachts mostly in the 39’ to 60’ range with several model available.

1959: The Consolidated Yard is bought by a syndicate headed up by Wes Rodstrom Sr.. Rodstrom at time operated a boat yard at the City Island Yacht Club at the other end of Pilot Street. At first he ran both yards eventually giving up the yacht club yard. Over a two year period the yard changed names to the Rodstrom Shipyard and then in 1961 became Consolidated Yachts Inc.

2000: A new century with new owners Michael Piparo and Wes Rodstrom Jr., as Wes Rodstrom Sr. after 50 years retires from the Yacht Yard business.

City Island Yacht Club

Incorporated 1907.

CIYC building

Our History

The City Island Yacht Club (CIYC) was formed during the Winter of 1904-1905. At first, the Club was located at Herman Cordes’ boathouse on the west side of City Island Avenue, just north of Ditmar Street. Ike Tabor designed the Club’s burgee and it was first raised on May 30, 1905. CIYC incorporated on May 17, 1907 for the purpose of “Yachting; encouragement of yacht building and naval architecture; inter-club and other competitions and the cultivation of naval science.” Samuel Smith served as CIYC’s first Commodore.

In 1910, CIYC moved to a one story building on the west side of City Island Avenue, north of Cross Street, what is now the parking lot for The Harbor Restaurant. The building was owned by Cap Walters, a very active member of the Club. In July of that year, Robert Jacob, owner of a prominent shipyard on the site of what is now Consolidated Yacht Yard, donated a flagstaff with topmast and yardarm. The mast came from the schooner yacht Queen Mab. The original topmast remains in use to this day at the present clubhouse.

In 1911, John Barrett became CIYC’s first club steward. The following year, Ted Kaufer became Commodore and served through 1913. That year, the Club moved to the other end of Cross Street on the East side of the Island. This new home originally was the residence of the famous Captain Charles Barr. The site later housed the Grant’s Canoe Club and is now the site of new apartments. CIYC leased the Cross Street property for ten years with an option to purchase. A porch, lockers, dock and seawall were built and numerous interior changes were made.

CIYC moved again in May 1919 to the foot of Pilot Street West on the south side (what is now the Pickwick Terrace Apartments) and stayed there for almost two years. Charles Cafferty was Commodore from 1919-23 and, in 1921, members Walters, Sayers, Huebner and Frapwell joined Commodore Cafferty in negotiations for the purchase of the present clubhouse on the North side of Pilot Street. Upon acquiring the property, the interior of the building was entirely rebuilt. Louis Huebner took on the job of building the summer house, dance hall, porch and part of the runway. In 1930, the Club took title to the Reynolds Street property, including the water rights. This greatly increased the size of the Club’s yard.

With the end of prohibition, CIYC obtained a liquor license. The early thirties marked a period of growth. Then, in 1938, a severe hurricane struck doing great damage to the clubhouse and sinking many boats in the fleet. It was a year before repairs were completed and normal activity could resume. The war years were quiet for the Club with many members in the armed forces or otherwise involved in the war effort.

Although the Club had joined the YRA of Long Island Sound in 1914, it was Commodore Henry Sayers (1926-27) who instituted the active racing program that has been followed ever since. In 1954, the Atlantic Coast Star Class Championships, defended by Herb Hild (owner of Hild Sails), the 1953 winner, were held at the Club.

A rich racing tradition continues today with CIYC boats entering and winning many On the Sound races, the Around Long Island race, Block Island Race Week, as well as races from Halifax to Key West to the Newport to Bermuda race.

Eviction notice posted 5/31/2023. Can't say I'm shocked. Wonder what will happen to the property - unbelievable that there wasn't huge money to be made with this location and the number of boats needing repair in western Long Island Sound. They did great work for me in 2010 but were incorrigibly absent and unmotivated on a recent metalworking job for which they had all the parts on site.

This is a terrible Marina. The facilities suck and the people who work here suck. No one gives a crap about the boats or the docks. Looks like it's more of a crane company then a Marina. They need to change the name to Consolidated Cranes.

Photo of Michael Z.

I brought an old IOR 1 ton racer to have the mast stepped, and found on arrival I fouled a dock line in the prop. 4 years later, I paid $17500 new bottom paint, a bad deck paint job that failed within months secondary to bad / no prep, the keel to be re-mounted off angle, the yard sent the motor for repairs to a shop that lost the motor, and as a nice send off they put the boat in the water and now there are 2 holes in the sides. Sure they talk nice, but wow, my son is now 4 years older without any sailing experience. Simply stay away, any positive feedback comes from someone in the shop...

All I hear on City Island is "Stay AWAY from Consolidated!" I wish I had heard that before they ripped me off: I asked them to make new life-lines for me and asked for an estimated price, after long calculation they said $300-$400. The life-lines were ready for me in a few days, with a bill for something around $750. Since I had no idea that time about what should it cost and the guy who did the work seemed to be nice and honest (and I still believe that he is the only one honest out of the people I have dealt with in that marina). After I tried to install the life-lines on my boat, I found out that all the lines were too long, despite they measured the length at the spot themselves and charged me for that time. (Later a friend explained me that the right length can be inferred just from the length of the old cables after compensating for their stretch; besides you can get all done in West Marine store for a fraction of the price.) Then they kept promising me to fix it and give me free parts from old boats. They would always promise something and then found an excuse to postpone it. They won't call me at arranged time, instead I always needed to come to their marina to hear another excuse. I find their acting very arrogant, instead of trying to be helpful they would make me ignorant. I have heard stories from other people who got ripped off at Consolidated - I recommend to avoid that place unless you want to get a lesson!

Consolidated Yachts is where rich people put their very expensive racing yachts. If you're not putting everything on an Amex Black card, please keep moving, because they will bleed you for every penny, and/or treat you like you're an incompetent moron. Like a lot of guys in the boating business, the proprietor, Wes Rodstrom, knows everything there is to know about sailing, and when he stands close to you, his massive brain acts as a magnet, erasing your knowledge about sailing, physics, fair price for goods and labor, and self-esteem. He doesn't hesitate to let you know that you're just a giant credit card waiting to swipe, and all his "advice" will end up costing you $700-70,000 dollars. At Consolidated, you're not allowed to do any of your own bottom painting--they would prefer if you would pay them $25/foot plus materials to do it for you. At first I was told that EPA regulations prevented me from doing this, since I haven't taken some 40 hour class. This is of course, total crap, and when I pointed out the real regulation, I was told that I wasn't allowed to do my own bottom paint for "insurance" regulations, something about someone once falling off a ladder. Of course, I don't need a ladder to paint my hull, and it would take anyone doing it all of an hour, so I wasn't about to pay them $500. I was then told that if I didn't paint the bottom I would likely be "not able to sail" the boat, which is just crazy. Anyway, I'll paint it for next season, when the boat will be up on blocks for winter storage at some place far away from Wes's influence. Barron's boatyard looks like a much better option on City Island. Don't give people like Wes the time of day.

Photo of Rosie K.

I kept my boat at Consolidated and used them for repair work. They are expensive for dock fees (especially given how rustic their bathrooms and facilities are), but they are a true rip-off for repairs. I had an expensive insurance claim that I brought to Wes for an estimate. I submitted the estimate with the claim and the insurance company paid up promptly. The repair took literally twice as long to complete as projected (keeping me out of the water for most of a sailing season), and came in about 30% over the estimated amount. I assumed Wes would cover the difference, but he insisted on charging me for his incorrect estimate. So even though my damage was fully covered by my insurance, Wes charged me thousands of dollars more than the insurance paid, and I ended up having to pay out of pocket. The quality of work was poor as well and parts had to be re-done, again, at my expense. I moved my boat out of Consolidated and would never do business with them again.

Photo of Ian K.

This is the best yard in the NYC Metro area to get work done on your boat. It's a working boat repair yard, not a pretty marina, the guys working there know their stuff and the management is very willing to work with you. Consolidated always gets things cheaper and faster than anywhere else around.

Photo of Ken S.

$1,000 for a bottom clean and a thermostat change only to find out a half hour sail away the overheating problem still existed. Also changed the new oil in the motor for no reason. Not done on time. The only good part of the experience was that they were friendly.

Photo of Mickey N.

We crawled into Consolidated Yachts mid trip on my yacht (36 ft) with engine trouble, (overheating) in need of assistance, looking to pay for a highly skilled mechanic to get on our way. We were shoved back out into the City Island harbor by the proprietor Wes, who used his docking skiff to push our yacht off the dock, and straight out into harbor traffic One of our party members had to run and jump to make it back on board. We were rudely told their mechanics don't have time for "bullshit boats", that their mechanics couldn't "be bothered" and also that we couldn't pay for dock space for the two hours it took a tow boat to come get us to a different boat yard (we ended up at Barrons, like other review below) I wish i was making this up, but really, that really is what happened. Boat owners, you know how stressful engine trouble always is, and how it always comes at the worst time. The owner amplified that stress by multitudes. The words "freefalling" don't even begin to express the heart attack that being dragged off a dock on an unmanuverable yacht into open water feels like. Wes is the lowest form of subhuman being-- not just arrogant, nasty and greedy, but one that genuinely takes delight in the misfortunes of others. Shame to him and Consolidated, for they are a shame to honest seamen. Yes the "bullshit boat" is alive and well, but it'll only end up back at Consolidated Yachts in my nightmares, or over my dead body.

Jonathan on July 3rd, 2022:

I called Consolidated as we made way up the East River. Our bilge pump was running continuously and we needed to find a secure spot to figure out the problem. I got a call back right away from Wes, the owner, who directed me to Alex his yard manager. They took me in right away and Alex and I went through the issues eventually discovered a failed wash down spigot that emptied our tanks into the bilge. A short time later parts secured and replaced all was well. This was on the Friday of a July 4th weekend. Can't more highly give thanks to Alex and Wes for prioritizing our issue and resolving it.

Terry Godbold aka Captain on July 31st, 2019:

When one reads the previous reviews, one will find far more negative comments than positive. Having lived on Magic for well over 2 years and in that time visited over 300 marinas, I found that most marinas cater to boaters as if the marina was a motel. Y’all know, showers, laundry, boaters lounge, etc. Consolidated Yachts (under its new management) is a work yard. In WWII PT boats were built here. There is a good shower but that is about all. The service here is excellent and the prices (for the Long Island Sound area) are fair. I cannot say enough about Alexander, the yard foreman. If you need your boat repaired, this is the place. But don’t expect the same amenities you would find at upscale marinas. Remember, this is a work yard. You are here to get your boat fixed. If you want a pool, go to another marina.

Is this your marina?

Boats for Sale & Yachts

Consolidated commuter 1929 boats for sale & yachts, consolidated commuter 1929 boats review and specs.

Table of Contents

MOHICAN   In the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, many of the New York area’s wealthiest businessmen commuted by motoryacht from summer homes in Westchester County, western Connecticut, and the north shore of Long Island to Manhattan’s financial center. Over the years, the design, aesthetics, and performance of commuter yachts became more refined, and a number of yacht-building firms distinguished themselves as specialists at producing commuters. To meet their clients’ exacting demands, these yards designed exceptionally fast yachts that were also elegant and beautiful–and of these specialist yards, none had a finer pedigree or was more closely identified with commuters than the Consolidated yard of City Island, New York. Built in 1929, MOHICAN is one of these exceptional Consolidated commuters. Her present owner, an experienced classic-yacht owner with a passion for original detail, spent six years restoring her, expending considerable time and effort researching and documenting the original specifications for Consolidated generally and MOHICAN specifically. MOHICAN is highly recommended to anyone desiring a pedigreed classic motoryacht that has been restored to her original details. She represents the apex of the development of the classic American commuter yacht. This is the real thing! MOHICAN is EU VAT paid.
