The best classic superyachts available for charter

Want to sail back in time? For your next yacht charter holiday, step on board a classic charter yacht to experience life on board during the glamorous bygone ages. The definition of what makes a classic yacht is hard to pin down, but the term is generally used for superyachts delivered before 1975. Encompassing both motor and sailing yachts that have been constructed using traditional procedures and materials, these relics of the past offer colourful histories as well as a luxurious experience on board. Take a look at the best classic yachts available for charter now.

Christina O

She’s hosted Winston Churchill, the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Rudolf Nureyev during her time as a superyacht, and had a former life as a Canadian anti-submarine frigate. The classic 99.15 metre Christina O boasts a remarkable history.

Formerly owned by Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, the classic 99.15 metre Christina O was first delivered in 1943 before Onassis refurbished her in a $4 million refit under his ownership in the 1950s. Despite having undergone extensive refit periods, her opulence has been preserved, including her famous Ari’s cocktail bar and concert room.

On board you can expect plenty of wood panelling, antique furniture, pianos and pictures of famous guests sprinkled throughout the interiors. Accommodation on board is for up to 34 across 17 well-appointed cabins.

Primed for entertaining, there is a stage installed around the base of the funnel where Maria Callas has performed and a Minotaur mosaic dance floor, which drops down to reveal a swimming pool.

Kalizma has had many high-profile owners over her lifetime, but perhaps her most renowned owner is actor Richard Burton. At the peak of Hollywood’s cinematic Golden Age, Burton purchased Kalizma as a gift for his wife Elizabeth Taylor after she won an Oscar – and it was on board Kalizma that he would later present Taylor with her famous 69.42-carat diamond. Kalizma would go on to host guests of note including Clint Eastwood, Brad Pitt, Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh before she was rather unceremoniously offered for auction in a state of disrepair in 2019. Under new ownership and having now completed an extensive refit that has refurbished her glamorous interior top to bottom, Kalizma is ready for a charter season in the stunning islands of the Maldives. With a range of al fresco spaces for soaking up the sunshine, as well as a toybox bursting with diving gear, Jet Skis, Seabobs and gear for snorkelling and waterskiing, Kalizma is well-equipped for an Indian Ocean charter with a touch of old-school charm.

Stats: 31.39 metres, Brooke Marine, 1939, 8 guests, 6 crew

Eros  was built in England in 1939 for the daughter and son-in-law of a British Lord. Soon after her launch the waters were mined by the Germans and she spent World War II stuck in port, during which time her owner died. After the war she became the private yacht of billionaire Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. Following a no-expense-spared restoration,  Eros  is a true classic in immaculate condition.

She still retains much of her original features like teak panelling in the dining saloon - a nod to her original art-deco interior - and can sleep up to eight guests in four double cabins. Those looking for the thrill of sailing can take the helm at her classic wooden wheel, while others can simply kick back on a sun lounger at the bow. As the sun sets, guests can dine on deck thanks to a large teak table with wraparound seating for up to 10.  Eros  also boasts a well-stocked toybox, carrying the likes of kayaks, deep-sea fishing gear, paddle boards and equipment for waterskiing and wakeboarding.

Stats: 50.29 metres, Camper & Nicholsons, 1937, 10 guests, 11 crew

After serving in World War II as part of the evacuation effort in Dunkirk, Malahne was owned by film producer Sam Spiegel, acting as the production headquarters for Lawrence of Arabia  and played host to the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Jack Nicholson and Grace Kelly. In 2015, she underwent a major restoration project at Pendennis . 

Her Guy Oliver designed interior echoes her charming 1930s roots, including some authentic writing desks installed in a number of the six cabins. Her main saloon offers numerous armchairs, a piano and a casual dining area in one corner. A more formal dining room for up to 10 boasts art deco features and a stunning wood floor. A second lounge/study acts as the perfect place to send a few last-minute emails or to enjoy a glass of your favourite whisky atop comfortable sofas.

On deck, guests can relax in the sunshine atop crisp white sunpads with optional shades of comfy blue loungers before tucking into an al fresco lunch in the sunshine.

Charter cost: Malahne is managed for charter by Edmiston and has a weekly rate starting from €165,000.

Yachts for charter

Stats: 71.1 metres, Krupp Germaniawerft, 1929, 12 guests, 18 crew

Launched in 1929, this classic saw service in the Second World War and was sold to a new owner in 2015 who set out on a mission to restore the yacht to her former glory. After a 16-month refit at Pendennis she hit the water once again, and was awarded the Neptune for best rebuilt yacht at the World Superyacht Awards 2019 . Highlights on board include a master suite complete with a private lounge and shaded dining terrace, a stepped pool on the sun deck and a spa complete with a Turkish Hammam and a a barber shop for that perfect shave. The classic superyacht also boasts no less than three cinemas and three fireplaces for the perfect cosy night on board.

Charter rate: Haida 1929 is managed for charter by Edmiston , with a weekly charter rate starting from €310,000.

Over The Rainbow

Stats: 35 metres, Dickie & Sons, 1930, 11 guests, 5 crew

Like most yachts her age, Over The Rainbow has played a significant role in history. During World War II the wooden motor yacht was conscripted as a coastal patroller by the name of HMS Coraxand after her service cruised the Mediterranean as a floating casino, entertaining locals from the Athens who were keen to bypass strict laws forbidding gambling in the Greek capital. From Winston Churchill to Madonna, Over The Rainbow has hosted her fair share of celebrities on board.

The superyacht was last refitted in 2017 and is now equipped with high-tech safety and navigation systems while maintaining her classic charm throughout.

Charter cost: Over The Rainbow is available for charter with TWW with a weekly charter rate starting from €56,000.

Stats: 54 metres, Uljanik Shipyard, 1952, 12 guests, 9 crew

Seagull II was originally constructed as a passenger ship that could carry as many as 700 guests as she cruised between Croatia and Montenegro. She was totally transformed when her current owner bought her in 2004 and refitted her into a luxury motor yacht that can accommodate up to 12 guests. Featuring a distinctive dark blue hull, Seagull II maintains a classic 20th century look with her interior decorated in a faithful Art Nouveau style. Highlights include a master suite apartment with two staterooms and a shared private salon, a deck Jacuzzi, a formal dining room for hosting meals in a glamorous setting and ample deck spaces for sunbathing and al fresco entertaining. She is also well-stocked with toys, from gym equipment and Jet Skis to paddle boards and kitesurfing gear. While at anchor, she can accommodate up to 80 guests for a special event.

Stats: 49.06 metres, Wienerwerft, 1926, 10 guests, 8 crew

Classic sailing yacht Trinakria offers all the glamour of a bygone era with the comfort of modern amenities. The gaff-rigged schooner was first delivered by Wienerwerft in 1926 as a sailing vessel for Bulgarian fisheries on the Black sea, avoiding involvement in World War II when her then-owner sent her to hide away in Morocco. In the 70s, she was bought by a captain based in Cannes and was used for filming and cruises along the French Riviera. In 2004 she was in a state of disrepair and began a decade long refit project completed in 2014. Today, her wood panelled interiors still embrace the opulence of roaring ‘20s design but with refreshed amenities and tech. Her panoramic main saloon and al fresco dining lounge offer atmospheric dining spaces for up to 10 guests, while her toybox is packed wakeboards, stand-up paddleboards and gear for fishing or snorkelling.

Stats: 65.3 metres, Camper & Nicholsons, 1927, 11 guests, 15 crew

Named as the world’s largest wooden sailing yacht , the 65.3 metre Creole is an iconic three-masted schooner in impeccable condition. Boasting a sail area of 1,040 square metres, Creole can hit top speeds of up to 16 knots when the winds are right, and her impressive performance at sea has seen her collect a number of awards at international regattas including the Grimaldi Trophy Les Voiles des Saint-Tropez. 

As well as serving her time as a mine-hunter during World War II, Creole boasts a slew of notable owners who have looked after her during her lifetime, from members of the Gucci fashion family to Stavros Niarchos of the Greek shipping dynasty. Timeless styling is evident throughout her interior, especially in the pastel-coloured saloon and dining room, and she also offers al fresco dining for enjoying warmer weather.

Classic Sailing Charter

Try something different

For those who wish to experience the golden age of classic sailing, we have a 1921 Cornish lugger: Our Daddy. Looe’s best-known lugger, a splendid 45-ft vessel, was built there by Dick Pearce in 1921 for the J E Pengelly family and was skippered for years by his son, Alfred John.

Classic Yacht Charter Description

A 45′ lugger (75′ with bowsprit and bumpkin) carrying 2,500 sq feet of sail. Built in Looe 1921 by Dick Pearce for the J E Pengelly family for £435, she was skippered by his son, Alfred John. She fished for some 65 years in the pilchard, mackerel and later shark fishing industries.

She was the last sailing lugger to work out of Looe and was owned by Mike Darlington and Stuart Murray. Mike, who fished on the boat with the legendary Alfred John Pengelly, said: “A J told me, ‘One day, she will be yours,’ but he forget to say it would take 21 years…”

She has been re-built as a yacht with a Dandy rig .

About Cornish Luggers

The luggers built to operate out of the harbours east of the Lizzard, such as Mevagissey, Looe, Fowey, Gorran Haven and Polperro, were somewhat different than those built in West Cornwall. They were all registered at Fowey with the letters FY.

Both had a dipping lug on the fore mast and a standing one on the mizzen, but the east coast boats had finer underwater lines often with a fore mast stepped in a tabernacle on deck occasionally without lowering back into a scottle. The boats from both areas were of a similar size. The sails were made up to their own yards and when not in use, were stowed forward on the deck port side (unlike the west Cornwall luggers with their raft irons for stowing). Any spare sails with no yards were kept aft below deck.

Although the luggers of Porthleven were generally built with a transom stern, this was the exception in West Cornwall as they were usually double ended or pointed sterned. The boats of East Cornwall were all transom sterned and only varied in the different harbours with the rake of the transoms: well raked at Mevagissey and with more upright stern posts at Looe and Fowey. They were built somewhat lighter than the vessels west of the Lizzard and had the same sail configuration but often with the addition of a jib on a running bowsprit to port through a hole in the bulwarks and even a mizzen topsail set on a mizzen pole topmast. They used legs in their drying-out harbours, as they had finer bodies than their West Cornwall counterparts.

East Coast Yacht Charter Guide

If the Solent is Britian’s capital of yachting, the East Coast is the spiritual home of classic yachts and traditional workboats.

The misleading term refers not to the East Coast of Britain, but specifically to the expanded area of the Thames Estuary, starting with Ramsgate on the Isle of Thannet (which isn’t an island) in the south, to Lowestoft in the north.

It encompasses the north Kent coast of faded grandeur in its many Victorian seaside towns (Ramsgate, Margate, Deal, Sandwich, Faversham and Whitstable among them), the Essex coast, spiritual home to Thames sailing barges (Maldon) and Essex oyster smacks (Brightlingsea).

It is a place of shallow waters, creeks, salt marshes, islands and rivers – lots of them, from the gorgeous Deben to the outer reaches of the Thames itself.

The East Coast has been loved by many, including the late yachting journalist Maurice Griffiths, who immortalised it in articles and books, most famously Magic of the Swatchways .

Charter opportunities here include smacks and bawleys, Thames sailing barges (ideal for nervous charters and large groups), and the Classic Sailing Club, which operates out of the River Deben on a points basis.

Classic Sailing Club

Conquest is reborn and back in the water. Tradition, fabulous deck areas, class and style, all rolled into one. Conquest is an elegant Lady and she has been lovingly restored to her timeless and beautiful glory.

She was originally built to the highest standards in the early 1960`s and was one of the first luxury yachts available for private charter in the Mediterranean. Originally designed by D. J. (Rick) Richardson for the actor Norman Wisdom who was the first owner of the yacht. Her construction was completed in Spain before being towed to UK for high standard outfitting.

Conquest accommodates up to 9 sleeping guests in three double and one triple cabin, making her ideally suited to groups with multiple couples or a families. She has two incredibly spacious deck areas that are wonderful for sun bathing, enjoying a sundowner and dining al fresco. Her ample deck space for up to 50 guests also makes her an excellent yacht for entertaining.

Enjoy the tranquil surroundings and the latest in facilities and technology. Step on board and enjoy the unforgettable service level from Captain Angus Cowie and his crew whilst you are cruising in the most beautiful marine environment of the astonishing Mediterranean.

She is well equipped with a good size tender, waverunner, waterskis and wakeboards. For a more relaxed pace to unwind at anchor she also has snorkelling equipment and two paddle boards.

She regularly cruises to Ibiza, Mallorca, Saint Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Corsica and Sardinia.

Seagull II, a classic yacht of unparalleled grace, underwent a complete luxury rebuild in 2004-5. Resplendent in Art Nouveau style, every cabin boasts exquisite artworks, and newly furnished sofas and beds ensure a perfect blend of aesthetics and comfort.

The 24.7m cutter HALLOWE’EN designed by William Fife III, was built to the 15m rule and launched in 1926.

The owner’s suite at the stern includes a comfortable sofa with a desk on starboard and a nice vanity corner with sink on port.

SS Delphine

SS Delphine is one of the truly wonderful classic motor yachts, built in 1921, this luxury motor yacht has retained its style and grace. SS Delphine can host up to 150 guests for coastal navigation while an expert, international crew of 24 look after the needs of every guest.

Classic Sailing Yacht ELENA is a 41,60m traditional sailing schooner built and launched in 2009 from Factoria Naval de Marin. ELENA has been conscientiously recreated from the 1910 yacht of the same name using the original drawings by designer Nathaniel G Herreshoff. In ELENA, charter guests will find an exhilarating yacht which combines performance, elegance and beauty.

Sunshine is the third `sister-ship` built to the design (no.468) drawn up by W. Fife Jun. in 1900. She is a modern classic two masted gaff rigged schooner with a total sail area of 5,296 square feet.

Classic luxury yacht MALAHNE is a 50m motor yacht designed by Camper & Nicholsons and built by William Laurence Stependson. She was delivered in 1937. In 2015, the yacht's 30-month refit was completed by Pendennis Shipyard of Falmouth, UK. In charge of the exterior and crew areas was Classic yacht experts G. L. Watson & Co., while her interior guest spaces were meticulously reinstated by Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws Ltd.

Boarding this faboulous yacht opens the heart to a series of unique and extraordinary emotions.

Luxury motor yacht SHEMARA is a beautiful and elegant classic mega yacht built in 1938 by Vosper Thorneycroft in Southampton, UK. Measuring 65 metres superyacht SHEMARA has a very interesting history and was used as a submarine training vessel during World War II, following which she was purchased by her previous owner Sir Bernard Docker and utilised as a luxury yacht in the 1960s.

I’ve spent pretty much most of the summer cruising up and down the Thames on 'Feisty' excepting compliments on behalf of the boat. Even when surrounded by some spectacular gin palaces, the PTS still gets the attention, from three lock keepers as well, which has to be the ultimate accolade, I thank you and Statement Marine for that.

BTW the canopy curtains are a brilliant idea, as too the shower.

These 9 Historic Superyacht Charters Will Take You Back in Time

Beyond striking a cutting figure, classic yachts offer more than the routine experience of most modern charter yachts. These vessels are living narratives—laden with stories and personalities from bygone eras—with details that carry a legacy of old-world sophistication and finesse: Think Christina O ’s distinctive swimming pool or Shenandoah of Sark’ s dramatic sail plan.

“Whenever I step on board a classic yacht, I like to imagine where the yacht has cruised through the decades,” says charter broker Céline Pujol. “Who were the guests who stepped onboard?” Christina O , for example, served as a wedding venue for people ranging from supermodel Heidi Klum to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who wed Grace Kelly in 1956. This vessel also hosted an unusually large share of prime ministers, presidents and celebrities, so that a charter today could mean sleeping or eating in the same areas as Winston Churchill, JFK, Frank Sinatra, or Elizabeth Taylor.

Time is the essence of a classic yacht, Céline explains. “First, you travel back in time, being onboard a unique piece of history. Second, the travel actually takes time, because these yachts aren’t fast. But that allows you to indulge and live each moment to the fullest. You simply can’t rush from one place to another.”

With many vintage vessels, both power and sail, now part of the global charter fleet, a growing number of charter clients are considering immersing themselves in the rich, wood interiors, eating at formal dining tables with 1930s china, or gazing out at the ocean from deck-chairs. The experience, really, is not comparable to life aboard a modern yacht. Many charter guests are asking themselves: Why chase trends when you can relive history?

Nearly 30 people were cut from the workforce, according to a post on LinkedIn from one of the people let go. At least some interns were abruptly told the summer internship program was canceled last Friday, on April 19, as well.
