Has anyone replaced their Morse style transmission shifter?

Hello All, I have been having quite a time trying to get my transmission to shift in & out of gear recently, in order to do a proper haul out of my C-30, but so far I can't get her out of the slip! I have thoroughly lubricated the shifter, engine trans. cable, etc. but to no avail. I made the mistake of trying to force the transmission to shift at the Morse handle assembly. This resulted in shearing off the connection between the shifter handle assembly & the inner plate which connects the rod to the transmission cable. I guess when in doubt, don't force it! So I attempted to remove the shifter & throttle assembly bolted to the port side of the cockpit foot well. I managed to release the two handle assemblies by releasing their allen retaining screws. But there is a large steel retaining ring on the outside of the shifter pinion rod assembly that won't budge. I need to remove the shifter assembly to see if I can weld the broken plate to rod assembly back together. If it can't be repaired, then I will need to replace it with a $600. Teleflex replacement, but either way I must remove the shifter assembly. Any insights from those who have tackeled this job before? Thanks for any advice.

Re: Has anyone replaced their Morse style transmission shift I think if I had to change mine, I would separate the shifter and the throttle. That's how it was on my last boat (K41) and it was more intuitive and less likely to mess both up if there was a problem. Just a thought.

The Garbone

The Garbone

I replaced my setup recently. If I recall I removed a nut and clip that was holding the disk on the shaft. After the disc was free the controls slid out into the cockpit. Yours looks a bit different tho. If I were you I would go on "sailboat swap shop" and the C30 owners group on Facebook and ask if anyone has the assembly. My controls had a bent shaft and i located a replacement assembly that way at relatively low cost. Once you have a replacement sawzall the old one out.

Re: Has anyone replaced their Morse style transmission shift Gary, I agree that I may have to sawzall the old one out, but I was hoping to at least try to weld the broken plate back to the shaft, but if it won't come out this may be my only option. Jongleur, I know the newer C 30's have the separate levers for the throttle & trans on the steering pedestal. But I've heard that it's tough to run the cables up into the pedestal base with an already tight clearance from the wheel steering chain. I would really like to have a single shifter & transmission combo control unit, like my last S 2 sailboat had, which is way easier to control. But my 5411 diesel engine is a little primitive, & you have to pull all the way back on the throttle in order to kill the fuel flow to turn off the engine, past the throttle detent. So I would unfortunately not be able to install a single lever combo control, unless I install a separate throttle kill pull mechanism, similar to a choke lever, I guess. I wish I could make some real improvements to this set up, but at this point I'd be happy to just have a working transmission shifter! I will post more pics of this trans level removal, once I figure out how to remove the bloody thing! Cheers.

Re: Has anyone replaced their Morse style transmission shift I don't know how your gear box is set up. but when my morse transmission cable fried itself on top of my exhaust elbow, i undid it . then i shifted for 3 weeks with a line attached direct to the 3 position gearbox lever at the back of my Yanmar 2GM20F.

Check out this thread on Facebook if you think you need the controls still. https://www.facebook.com/groups/sailboatswapshop/permalink/644592945677047/

Only SailboatsToGo lets you choose your sail when you buy a new Snark*.  The "Sail Swap" process is quick and easy.

You can pick from any of our seven styles shown below.  the only cost is your postage cost to return the manufacturer's sail to us, about $5 to $ 7.  two types of dacron sail upgrades also available.  (not buying a new boat today  you're on the wrong page.   got to  https://www.sailboatstogo.com/content/snark_sail#snark ).

Easy as 1-2, not even a 3!  Here's how it works:

1.   Order a Super Snark or Sunflower from SailboatsToGo.

2. Pick which sail you want using the no-charge links below and add it to your cart along with your Snark sailboat. We will ship our sail to you promptly when availability of your boat is confirmed by the factory.

3. When you receive your Snark, take the sail that it comes with to the post office. They will have a Priority Mail tyvek envelope available for free. Send the sail in the Tyvek envelope to our address (SailboatsToGo LLC, 23 Pine Vale Road  Waltham, MA 02451). The post office will collect postage from you, about $5 to $7 in the continental US.  ONLY NEW, UNUSED SAILS SENT BY BUYERS OF NEW BOATS FROM US QUALIFY FOR THE SAIL SWAP.

We also offer sail upgrades that allow you to get a dacron sail at a deeply discounted price. Same as with Sail Swap, you pick the dacron sail you want and send us back the sail that comes from the manufacturer.  To see our dacron sail upgrades, click here . They appear below the Sail Swap sails and come in white and 2 colors patterns for the Super Snark and 4 color patterns for the Sunflower. Our color dacron sails are manufacturered for us by Neil Pryde International, a premium quality sailmaker.

*Applies only to Super Snark and Sunflower purchases from SailboatsToGo.

Blue Stripes: light/dark blue panels.    (Sail B)

Spring.    (Sail F)

Summer: Yellow/White.     (Sail C)  No need to do a sail swap on a Sunflower if you want this sail.  Sunflowers come with yellow/white striped sail standard.  The Sunflower sail does have  the words "Sunflower 3.3" in 6-inch high lettering at the bottom toward the back.  If you object to this lettering, then a sail swap would get you one that did not say "Sunflower 3.3."

Dacron Upgrade Sails

White dacron sail.

This is a house brand sail (not Neil Pryde) but still very good quality.  As compared to nylon, dacron (polyester) is a stiffer, less stretchy material so the sail will hold its shape and not belly out in strong winds.  More Pictures and info  click here .

Classic White Dacron - $29 Upgrade.

NEIL PRYDE INTERNATIONAL DACRON SAILS

Dacron (polyester) is a stiffer, less stretchy material than nylon.  A Dacron sail will hold its shape and not stretch out in strong winds.  It's also a heavier material and therefore stronger, as compared to nylon.   Neil Pryde is a widely-respected sail maker, known for quality workmanship.  You will be impressed with the extra heavy stitching on these sails, done with the greatest attention to detail.

Please note:  Pastel Corners and Candy Stripes Red/White are available in sizes for both the Super Snark and the Sunflower. Blue/Gray stripes and Spring are only available in the size to fit the Sunflower.

  Pastel Corners ("Joy")  $79 Upgrade.

BOATS & SAILS

Often, a boat is left with someone who cannot be its caretaker, for various reasons. While many companies charge $100 per foot just to pick up and dispose of the boat in a landfill, adding thousands of pounds of waste to the environment, we take a different approach. We aim to reuse and recycle 80% of each boat we take in. Our removal pricing is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but we are usually very affordable, and often even free, for sailboats. This is how we maintain a majority of our inventory. We prioritize reducing, reusing, and recycling not just for boats, but in all that we do including sails through our sail donation program!

Have you ever sailed a dory? While best known as rowing craft, they make wonderfully fun sailboats.

We offer a couple of different sail plans, including the gaff jib and main rig shown here on a 26-foot loa Seine dory. Boats can also be outfitted for outboard or even inboard engines.

Build Your Own Boat

Dreamed of building a boat yourself but aren’t sure you know enough to get started? Join us for one of our two-week dory courses.

Working with our master builder, you and your classmates will construct a traditional Banks dory, beginning with raw lumber and culminating in a launch party and celebratory row. Check our news section for upcoming courses.

While we definitely have a soft spot for dories, we also build a variety of other classic wooden boats, including sailing dinghies, power skiffs and handsome rowing tenders like this one made for the Schooner Martha Seabury.

More Classic Wooden Boats

Built by our parent company, Dawson Moreland and Associates, the 61-foot loa Martha Seabury was the first schooner to be launched on this historic waterfront in more than 30 years.

But she’s just the beginning. A twin hull was built at the same time, and we hope there will be many more to come!

Strength and Quality

It’s the defining feature of a Lunenburg-built Banks dory – the naturally-grown frames or what we dory builders call knees.

Ours are cut from the lower trunk and roots of Hackmatack trees that are pulled from the muck of Nova Scotia swamps, then shaped to fit our boats, always following the grain for maximum strength.

Building and Launching a Dream Dory at The Dory Shop

Oct 25, 2021

Keith Farrier still has a hard time believing that the dream boat he’d been wishing for since he was a child is almost ready to be launched in Lunenburg Harbour. Currently on her cradle at The Dory Shop yard in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Farrier’s beautiful Seine Dory with a cabin attracts a lot of attention from passersby and visitors as the final touches are being worked on. Now she’s ready for her big debut: to be launched in the Lunenburg Harbour on Thursday, October 28th before heading to her new home in Shediac, New Brunswick. “I say to my wife often, ‘I find it pretty hard to believe that I’m going to have a boat in the water soon, something I’ve always wanted my entire life’ and now it’s like my childhood dream is coming true,” said Farrier. “Who gets to say that? A lot of people don’t.” (To read the rest of the article, click READ MORE)

Bluenose 100: "The Dory Story: A Conversation with Captain Daniel Moreland"

Sep 09, 2021

The Bluenose 100 features The Dory Shop in their latest video! Watch the interview with Captain Daniel Moreland (Captain of the Picton Castle and owner of The Dory Shop) as he explains the significance of The Dory Shop in Lunenburg (building dories for schooners since 1917), the history of the schooner fishery and what that history means today!

“Such an unassuming little shop, but very special…like you can feel the history of the place.”

We build dories. Day in, day out, one after the other. In fact, we have been building the iconic Grand Banks dory and other traditional wooden rowboats for close to a century. Although we’ve added a few power tools, we’re proud to say our boats are still hand-built using tried-and-true construction methods, along with quality materials like solid oak transoms, pine and cedar planking, and our signature grown hackmatack frames, all held together with quality copper fastenings. We like it this way. It works and it will continue to work as long as the sea is salty and the ocean has waves.

That doesn’t mean nothing ever changes here. These days, in addition to dories for rowing and sailing, power skiffs and runabouts, we’re also building big powerful schooners, perfect for coastal cruising or blue water adventures across the world’s oceans. Like our dories, they are traditionally-built; in this case, from a designer’s half model instead of the decades-old jigs and patterns from which we build our smaller boats, their edges worn smooth from the touch of so many craftsmen’s hands.

Our boats are strong, durable, seaworthy, and beautiful in their simplicity. But the place we work is special too. The Dory Shop is located on the harbour shore of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, a port renowned for shipbuilding and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We welcome you to drop by – the locals all do! – or better yet, to join us for one of our two-week dory building classes. For those unable to visit, we are happy to work with you to build the boat of your dreams and can assist you with all the shipping details.
