Paros Catamaran

“Paros catamaran” is a small family owned and run catamaran charter company in Greece providing stress-free sailing holidays in the Cycladic islands. “Kallisti”, a catamaran Lagoon 39, built in 2015, sets off from its charter base in the port of Paros. Allow us to show you the ‘best’ of small Cyclades while you are enjoying the finest sailing experience in the Aegean Sea.

“the impressing cycladic daughter in the absolute white and blue”.

In the center of the Aegean, in the heart of Cyclades, is the island Paros which was voted as “Europe’s Best Island For 2018”. A white touch in the big blue. There are several reasons to book a trip to Paros, the island that is most renowned for its natural beaches, cosmopolitan nightlife, and ancient monuments. An ideal destination for your summer holidays. An ideal base to start your sailing vacations thanks to its position in the center of Cyclades and its frequent connection with the port of Piraeus(4hrs connection) and Athens’s airport (half an hour flight).

CATAMARAN CHARTER   CYCLADES  ISLANDS

Catamarans are characterised by their two hulls, which provide not only significantly more stability but also more space, privacy, and comfort than a classic monohull sailing yacht. All catamarans have fantastic sundecks, trampolines, and a spacious living room, which offers excellent views on the beautiful Greek scenery. Catamarans usually have a considerable small draft which allows them to get into shallow waters close to the shore. They are an ideal choice for a cruise with a group of friends or family.

You may start your sailing trip to Cyclades from different marinas, according to yacht availability, flight schedules, charter duration and desired itineraries: Marina Lavrion (Athens area), Marina Alimos (Athens), Marina Zeas (Athens), Marina Agios Kosmas (Athens), Marina Vouliagmeni (Athens), Marina Flisvos (Athens), Marina Paros (Cyclades), Marina Mykonos (Cyclades) and Marina Santorini (Cyclades).

You may see below our wide range of catamarans that can be offered for bareboat charter, skippered charter, or crewed charter.

Please note that for a bareboat charter you need to hold a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you are holding an ASA or RYA equivalent license, it can be easily converted into an ICC in your home country. We further advise that at least one additional guest holds an RYA Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent.

Rent a catamaran in the Cyclades, an island group situated in the Aegean, which is within a short distance of the southeast of Athens. The Cyclades present travelers with paradisiacal beaches, hidden coves, and festive activities that are perfect for families, groups of friends, and even couples, making them ideal for a great sailing vacation in Greece.  The name Cyclades comes from the Greek word “kyklos” which means circle; the islands encircle the sacred island of Delos, where Apollo was born. The famous and bigger islands of the archipelago include Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Ios, Naxos, and Paros. Some of the lesser-known and yet smaller islands include Serifos, Sifnos, Folegandros, Kythnos, Tinos, and Amorgos. Since the sea is close to the mainland, some of the earliest maritime routes and artistic expressions started in the Cyclades, meaning trade was a fundamental aspect in the Aegean Sea. Nowadays, the whitewashed houses and rocks that are enclosed by the sea are a typical representation of the Cyclades. The buildings are in perfect harmony with the natural environment. This has constantly brought visitors yearly who want to enjoy a great sailing vacation and admire the dramatic landscapes.

A catamaran charter in the Cyclades can begin from Athens, but ideally,  you would want to start from Mykonos or Santorini. This way, you can immediately begin exploring the Cyclades islands.  Mykonos sets a vibrant social scene where many rich and famous arrive on mega yachts. You can enjoy a wonderful night by the clubs or plan a short cruise to Delos. You can also head to Tinos or Symi where you can enjoy the traditional side of Greek culture and lifestyle. If you are visiting during peak months of late July and August, we then recommend you to head to Symi, in Finikas, which offers good protection from the Meltemi winds. Tinos and Andros are the windiest islands in the Cyclades during this period. Alternatively, if you choose to depart from Santorini, you can then head to Folegandros. This is known to be a secret gem with stunning beaches. The main town of Chora will also offer guests a magnificent view of the vast Aegean Sea.

rent a catamaran cyclades

You also have the option to go from Santorini to Milos on a day trip; both islands exhibit gorgeous landscapes, due to the volcanic activity that occurred in the ancient years. Taking pictures on board of the multi-colored volcanic beaches, including the white and black beaches of Santorini or the famous Sarakiniko beach of Milos, will leave you breathless. For an extended catamaran charter in the Cyclades, you can go a little further to other islands, such as Kythnos, which has numerous anchorages and beautiful serene bays that are also fairly untouched from tourism. Some great destinations in between include Sifnos which is famed for its pottery and known for its top cuisine in the entire complex. If you go a little farther, you can reach Serifos, which has been forever bound with the mythical Perseus; its bustling cobblestone streets by the harbor are a walking paradise. Finally, if you wish to travel around the Cyclades islands on a catamaran charter, you can visit many more islands, such as Naxos, Paros, and Koufonisia.

A catamaran cruise in the Cyclades starting from Paros is also an excellent choice. Paros is very well connected to a lot of its neighboring islands. The port of Naoussa sits in a picturesque bay and offers the largest fleet of fishing boats in the Cyclades; all types of catamaran can depart from here. A lot of charterers head from the Port of Parikia to Naoussa so they can admire the golden-sand beaches, hidden coves, and beautiful caves. Do not miss the chance to visit the Blue Lagoon and Kolymbithres beach on a one-day cruise. From those renowned ports, you can easily head to Ios, the island of Homer’s mother, which has beautiful beaches and offers a vivid nightlife with exhilarating parties. You also have the option to go for sensational excursions to low-populated or completely uninhabited islands such as Antiparos, Donousa, Heraklion, Kimolos, Koufonisia, and Schinoussa. These islands offer an exotic escape, crystal-clear waters and are ideal for a relaxing getaway. They are also easily accessible from Naxos, the largest island in the complex. A great way to finish off your trip is by visiting Amorgos, one of the farthest islands, offering its visitors the ultimate getaway.

Below you will find some useful information for your catamaran charter in the Cyclades.

Old Port in Chora, Mykonos: located on the western coast of Mykonos; several rocks are near the quays so when anchoring care should be taken. The Northeast has the best mooring spot but the new port of Mykonos offers better berthing sections.

Mykonos International Airport: is 4km away from the main town, Chora, and is roughly 15 minutes away from the port by car/taxi.

New Port/Marina Tourlos, Mykonos: located 20km from the old port and has a 700m length quay. The best berthing section is on the inner-north side of the quay. Has good restaurants within walking distance and the marina can accommodate up to 220 yachts at a length of 25m. Provides water and electricity supplies as well.

Vlychada Marina, Santorini: is about 20 minutes from Fira Village. It is a great marina and offers the safest anchorage in Santorini. However, a few berths are available at the shallow depth of 2-3m. This is not an issue, since a lot of sailing vessels can only just dock overnight.

Santorini, Thira International Airport: is roughly a 10min drive from the Vlychada marina.

Karavostasi Marina, Ios: has a maximum length of 60m for yachts but gives immediate access to the Aegean sea; it offers water and electricity supplies. Excellent shelter against the Meltemi.

Marina Naxos: offers 70 berths in total with a max length of 20m and a depth of 3.5m. Visitors will have access to water and electricity and amenities such as shops, bars; has restaurants in close proximity.

Naxos Airport: is 4km southwest of the island’s capital, Chora, and is 10 min away by car.

Naoussa Marina/Harbour, Paros: provides excellent shelter and has numerous shops and tavernas in its town. Although it can get crowded in July-August from both visiting boats and ferries, there is an excellent anchorage in Ag. Ioannis Cove on the northern side of the bay; is very well sheltered. The marina has a berthing capacity of 70 yachts, fuel is available, and there is a good bus service to Parika, the capital of the island. The southeast quayside is affected by the swell from the strong winds at times, so make sure you moor alongside in calm weather.

Paros National Airport: is roughly 30 min away from Naoussa Marina. If you want a more convenient port, then head to Port of Parikia, which is just 10 minutes away, offering berths for all kinds of vessels.

Adamas/Adamantas Marina, Milos:  great shelter from the W-E winds, excellent services with specialized staff at the dockside, and facilities such as free Wi-Fi; showers are available too. Offers 50 berths at a depth of 5m.

Milos Airport: is roughly 10 minutes from the marina by bus or by car ( 4.7km away). The flight from Athens to Milos is 40 min.

Marina Ermoupoli, Syros: Ermoupoli is the cosmopolitan main town and the capital of the Cycladic islands. The marina is active 24 hours a day and provides berthing for about 100 boats at a length of 40ft. Protected from all the weather conditions except the S-E winds.

Syros Aiport: is 4 min away from the center and 2km from the marina. The flight from Athens is 30 min long.

Platis Gialos Marina, Sifnos: one of the most protected marinas in the Cyclades islands.  It is very easy to berth here and has all the services and facilities you might need.

The fastest ferry route between Athens and Cyclades is Lavrio to Kea, which takes about 1 hour.

Anchorages spots for yachts in the Cyclades:

Megali Ammos, Mykonos: a large bay that is close to the town. An occasional swell may come in but usually in the north quadrant. Has a popular beach where many can relax and swim in the bay.

Rhenia islet: has a great and quiet bay for a trip to Delos and good holding, but make sure you keep to the middle to avoid the fishing buoy on the entrance.

Aliki Harbour, Paros: a small fishing harbor on the SW corner of Paros, offering a quiet anchorage and good shelter year-round. The holding is good if you anchor in the sand. You can even land a dinghy in the tiny inner harbor. Aliki is close to the airport, so boat hire in Paros is also recommended here.

Marmara Bay, Paros: a well-sheltered bay, open to the east coast of Paros. The holding is good and has depths of 5m. The village of Marmara is a 20 min walk away.

Ormos Mylopotas, Ios: a great alternative to the main Chora harbor in Ios and much quieter. The holding in the bay is good at a depth of 8m. There is even a dinghy quay in the SE corner by the taverna close to the resort. Supplies can be obtained from the shops or resorts.

Oia, Santorini: the anchorage here has reasonable shelter from the Meltemi with about 8 buoys; you can view the Caldera from the cliffs in the town and admire the sunset.

Provatas Bay, Milos: on the south coast of the island, which offers much room for yachts of all sizes; has good protection from the northern Meltemi winds.

Megas Bay, Syros: has 3 small bays where the east has the best holding with calm conditions and shelter from the south-westerlies.

Vari Bay, Syros: a large bay with clear water and good shelter. There is also a fishing harbor ashore where few smaller vessels tend to anchor.

Faros, Sifnos: you can anchor in the fishing harbor, which has good holding and a great taverna above the small bay.

Myrsini cove, Schinoussa: a large narrow bay on the west coast of the island. Watch out for the ferries and moor alongside the jetty. The anchorage is sheltered from all directions except the southerly. Some beaches, tavernas, and shops are ashore.

Pori Bay, Koufonisia: a semi-circular bay sheltered very well from the winds. A fine beach and a couple of tavernas are also ashore. In the bay to the north, you can go snorkeling in caves.

Cyclades Yacht Charter, Greece

Cyclades yacht charters bring freedom to explore one of the most inspirational Islands of Greece. White stone walls are nestled into the arid hillside, backed by startling blue seas make these islands amazingly picturesque from aboard a luxury charter yacht. The Cyclades offer both culture and hedonism: ancient sites, Byzantine castles, museums and lively nightlife, shopping, dining, and beaches. What more could you want from a Greece yacht charter in the Mediterranean?

Some highlights in the Cyclades:

  • Mykonos – Travellers rub shoulders with millionaires in the trendy and exotic nightclubs. Small sailboats moor beside luxury superyachts in the picturesque port.
  • Delos - The Cyclades archaeological jewel; the birthplace of Apollo - the god of light, poetry, music, healing and prophecy.
  • Santorini - Be seduced by the extraordinary landscape, spectacular heights and breathtaking sunsets.
  • Sikinos - Anchor your sailing yacht in the charming port framed by two villages hugging the cliffs high above. Sikinos has so much charm and diversity.
  • Paros and Naxos - Perhaps the most beautiful islands in the archipelago. Paros has some of the finest beaches and is famous for it's stunning white marble.
  • Serifos - A taste of natural beauty. The rocky coastline is cut with deep coves and protected beaches. You can even walk amongst stone formations, resembling human figures.

The Cyclades have plenty to offer. Both onboard your sailing yacht and ashore, you’ll be entertained. There is enough in the Cyclades to please even the most discerning sailing charter guest.

A Cyclades yacht charter holiday on a luxury superyacht is in every aspect a Mediterranean classic. Easily one of Greece’s most important yachting destinations, the Cyclades is one of the favorite holiday areas for crewed luxury yachts. This Greek delight comes with everything that one desires from a dream holiday destination – near-perfect weather, quaint bays, idyllic beaches, breathtaking landscapes and, of course, good winds.

Experience and Enjoy the Coast and the Sea

The Cyclades belongs to the highly acclaimed and often preferred island groups within the Aegean Sea. Considered by seasoned and regular visitors to this region as sailing paradise, Cyclades usually ranks high among the top Greece yacht charter holiday destinations. With more than 220 islands and Delos Island at the heart of this holiday paradise, Cyclades is a definite pick by those who want to experience a Greek yacht charter holiday that is complete and authentic.

Majority of the islands have no local residents, but the larger islands like Santorini, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos are popular places of gathering for those who love the sun and those who want to get a good taste of the old Mediterranean.

The Islands of Cyclades

Cyclades completes the triad that comprises the Aegean Archipelago, together with Dodecanese Island and Sporades Island. The islands that comprise Cyclades are actually the exposed peaks of mountain ranges beneath the Aegean Sea, save for 2 islands. Santorini and Milos were the creations of past volcanic eruptions. This is the main reason why sailors consider Cyclades as one of the more challenging destinations in Greece.

This sort of an obstacle comes as a blessing for charter yachts enthusiasts as this Greek yacht holiday destination has been able to maintain its pristine and idyllic state owing to the fact that it is accessed by only a few and the more persistent yacht charter enthusiasts.

The vast swathe of open sea dividing the islands gives you a climate that is distinctively Mediterranean, making this Greek destination truly a sailor’s paradise, with warm summer months and mild winter months. The islands of Cyclades are covered with lush vegetation and is composed of vines, lemons and olives, and in the island of Naxos, you will see the potato crops, which is a major source of income by the locals, aside from their activities that are related to tourism.

Sailing Experience in Cyclades

The sailing experience in Cyclades is more of an engaging challenge for most seasoned sailors and yacht charter enthusiasts. Compared to the other regions in the Mediterranean, holidaymakers may find Cyclades a hard nut that is difficult to crack. Still, it is a favourite destination by yacht charter enthusiasts and tourists who are spending their yacht vacation on board Greece charter yachts.

If there is one thing that would make you stand on your toes in Cyclades, that would be the legendary Melteni, the seasonal wind which normally begins during the month of June, which reaches a peak speed in the months of July and August and starts to dissipate during the months of September. It is during this period that it takes a north-easterly direction.

Cyclades is definitely an important part of your luxury yacht charter Greek itinerary, and if you are planning a yacht charter holiday, then you should have Cyclades at the top of the list of places to visit.

As one of the most well known yacht charter grounds in the Mediterranean, Greece and the Cyclades Islands offer all the main types of yacht charter such as motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and especially the ever increasing super yacht charter.

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Greece and Cyclades yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have strong meltemi winds blowing frequently. This is also the high season as far as numbers go. The best time to charter a yacht is probably either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are the most comfortable, the wind lighter (yet reliable) and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

A yacht charter in Santorini will greet you with this picture-perfect reality, where you can sit sipping wine, looking out at a breathtaking Santorini sunset, from the enchanting Oia Village. With a bustling nightlife, watersports and golden sands, it’s sure to have something so suit every sailor! Hike to the lighthouse at Cape Kórakas for stunning ocean views, or visit the Ágii Anárgyri monastery above Parikiá, surrounded by pine and citrus groves. Paros is home to endless stunning coastline; if you want to windsurf or kitesurf during your yacht charter, then head to Pounda or Golden beach, or if you’re looking for a scenic patch of beach, sail to Kolymbithres, where crystal-clear waters meet unique granite formations scattered across the sands. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea as you wander through the village, stopping at local tavernas and shops.

Sailing Conditions in the Cyclades

Sailing in the Cyclades is not for the faint-hearted. Due to the force of the Meltemi winds during the summer months, navigation can be tricky, and waves can be choppy. If you’re a beginner, don’t let this stop you from exploring these stunning islands, you could consider renting your yacht with a skipper on board so that you can enjoy all the wonders of sailing without any of the stress of navigation!

Best time to Visit the Cyclades Islands in Greece

When should you set sail to these beautiful islands? Enjoy a Mediterranean climate and the sun? Here, the summer months consist of warm, dry weather. In contrast, winter months tend to be cooler and rainy. A yacht charter in Lefkada would be ideal during June and September. These months you will be able to soak up the glorious sun while avoiding the crowds that come into town during the peak season (July – August). For those looking to rent a boat during these peak months, it is recommended to book in advance to avoid high costs and have the best options available.

When planning a yacht charter trip, you need to decide on the length of your charter. Our yacht charters are usually bookable for a minimum of one week. We recommend guests spend one to two weeks sailing in the Cyclades area.

Do you already have dates in mind for your trip? Contact one of our expert charter advisors, who can provide all the details you need to decide on your boat rental. Please note that the price of a yacht charter will vary depending on the time of year. If you choose to charter a yacht in the high season, the price will likely be higher than other less popular times of the year.

Choosing the perfect boat to rent for a sailing trip in the Cyclades

Regarding yacht rental, the options can seem overwhelming! At GlobeSailor, we have boats of all shapes and sizes for you to rent. Our yachts range in length, cabins, berths, boat model, when they were built, add-ons such as a dinghy or water sports equipment, and of course, price.

Your choice of cabins will vary depending on the sailboat or catamaran you choose. Usually, cabins will be single or doubles, meaning they can accommodate one or two people. There are also double cabins for individual use available on some boats, which is a cabin option for one guest who wishes to have more space aboard the yacht.

We offer guests a choice between a sailboat, catamaran, power boat, luxury yacht, gulet or even houseboat! The choices are endless!

Most guests choose either a sailboat or a catamaran to rent. Both boats have unique characteristics to satisfy the varying needs of clients.

A monohull or a sailboat is a traditional boat with one hull (mono!). It is focused on performance and offers sailors the traditional sailing experience. Many sailors like the traditional feel of a monohull. A monohull might be best for you if you fancy yourself a true captain of the seas! GlobeSailor has many boat rentals for our guests to choose from, including popular models like Oceanis or DuFour Grand Large.

Catamarans have more than one hull. The multihull of a catamaran offers its guests more stability as it the boat is equipped to rock less against the ocean waves. A catamaran is also more spacious than a monohull. Catamarans usually range from 30 feet to 60 feet, with the average length being around 45 feet. Catamarans have less heeling (tilting) than monohulls, providing passengers a more comfortable and stable ride. Catamarans also have a shallower draft, which means they can sail in waters with a low tide and get closer to shore. The GlobeSailor catamaran fleet is massive, offering guests options for whatever charters they have in mind. Popular models such as the Lagoon 46 and the Bali 4.5 model can be found on our website.

Sailing Bareboat or With a Crew in Greece

Sailing bareboat or with a skipper and crew is a personal preference and depends on several factors, such as experience, comfort level, and budget. Suppose you are an experienced sailor with a good understanding of navigation. In that case, yacht charters without a skipper (also called bareboat) can be a rewarding adventure, providing more freedom and flexibility to explore the destination at your own pace. However, if you are a beginner or prefer a more relaxed sailing trip, sailing with a skipper is the best option. A skipper is like the captain of the boat, and they can provide guidance, help you with the nitty-gritty details, and ensure the safety of the crew and the yacht. A skipper can help guests create the perfect itinerary for your sailing trip. Once your perfect itinerary is built, you can sit back and relax for the week while your skipper takes you sailing in the most beautiful destinations in all of Greece.

There is also an option to have a hostess or a cook on board GlobeSailor yachts. A hostess is responsible for making two of the daily meals (usually breakfast and lunch) and will take care of the boat's upkeep (tidying up common areas etc.). A cook is responsible for making all three meals on board the boat. Both crewed options allow clients to eat Greek dishes aboard a beautiful sailboat. Some guests prefer to choose the hostess option as it allows them to sail to a different marina each night and find the best authentic Greek restaurants on land. Sailing with a full crew offers guests an extra element of luxury as all the details are taken care of for you by the wonderful crew.

Please note the price of your charter will vary depending on whether you choose a bareboat or a crewed option. Each crew member option is a different price and might change depending on your specific yacht type. To enquire about the price of each option, please contact one of our booking advisors who can provide you with more details on each of the rentals available in the Cyclades islands.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Yacht Charter and Sailing Holidays in the Greek Cyclades (Paros and Mykonos)

Explore the sun-baked cyclades islands with their dazzling whitewashed hilltop villages..

The Cyclades in the central Aegean Sea are the archetypal Greek islands, with charming whitewashed houses, windmills, churches with bright blue domes, ancient ruins and small tavernas with traditional food and wine.

On a yacht charter holiday you can visit Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, popular tourist islands with sandy beaches and a lively nightlife. Santorini (Thira) has one of the most spectacular landscapes in Greece as the island is the exposed rim of a submerged volcanic crater. As a contrast Kea, Skiathos, Kithnos, Serifos and Amorgos are much simpler with unspoilt small fishing harbours and protected anchorages - charming island to discover and still very genuine places to visit on your holiday.

This sailing holiday is great for more experienced sailors who want plenty of wind, longer passages and more challenging sailing itineraries. Distances between the islands in the Aegean are longer so you will spend much of the day sailing. Great sailing for serious sailors!

DAY 4 : Ios (15nm)

A "party island" famed for its nightlife but the harbour front is not noisy - most of the action is in the town, a steep walk up the hill. Apart from fun, the island has many beautiful beaches and peaceful anchorages.

A sailing holiday in the Cyclades will suit more experienced skippers as the passages between the islands can be exposed. In general the sailing conditions are more demanding than in other areas of Greece and involve longer passages.

The best times to sail in the Cyclades are May/June and September/October when you are less likely to be affected by the prevailing  meltemi  wind from the north which blows strongest in July and August at Force 5-6 and may reach Force 7-8. The  meltemi  can blow for 1 day or it can blow for 1 week continuously. In the Spring and Autumn the wind strength is less, around Force 3-4. Summer temperatures reach 25-27ºC.

There are many sailing itinerary options available in the Cyclades so you can plan your itinerary to best suit your sailing experience and the weather forecast. Your itinerary in this area must be flexible to cope with wind conditions, it is always a good idea to keep an extra day or so in hand to allow for adverse weather on the return leg.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 2-3'  (levels info)  and you will need an ICC qualification for bareboat charters in the Cyclades. You should be Coastal Skipper standard with plenty of skippering experience.

You can see all of the bases we offer in Greece along with the level ratings  here  so that you can find the most suitable destination for you. If you are at all unsure about a destination then please get in touch and our sales team will be more than happy to make their recommendations for you.

Cyclades islands

Yacht Charter Cyclades islands

General information.

In the centre of the Aegean Sea, south of Evia, lies the island complex of Cyclades. Ancient myth sets the archipelago as the scene where the god of sun and light, Apollo, was born and consists of around 2,200 island, islets and rocky outcroppings. The Cyclades are known for their abundant sunshine, stark and almost barren landscape, white washed houses, traditional windmills, footpaths lined with wild flowers, a lively night scene and wind!

Steeped in history, the Cyclades was inhabited in the neolithic period and, later, had their own ancient civilisation before various occupations, invasions, and was even a pirate base in the Byzantine era.

What else to know about Cyclades islands? visit - Greek National Tourism Organisation

The following main areas make up the Cyclades:

NORTHERN CYCLADES - Closest to Attica and often passed by is KEA, mountainous and green in comparison to its barren neighbours;  KITHNOS, the bare island lies between Kea and Serifos, a quiet and peaceful place, good for families and relaxed holidaymakers with many enclosed coves; SYROS, with its large harbour, that was a centre of commercial activity for millenia, and hectic nightlife. Between Syros and Kea is the uninhabited and desolate island of GYAROS, previously used as a place of exile and internment; ANDROS, the most northerly island and the second largest, only 7 nautical miles from Evia, has steep cliffs and white-sand beaches, TINOS, a popular destination for Greeks on pilgrimage and famous for its whitewashed houses and unique Cycladic architecture and famous dove-coats. Tinos is also the island of artists with many famous sculptors having come from there; Famed MYKONOS, the most cosmopolitan island in the world and the Capri of Greece, to be avoided in the summer if you don't like crowds; DELOS, the small, barren island right in the middle of it all, birthplace of Apollo. The island is all light, without mountains or even a tree to cast a shadow and covered with centuries worth of ruins; just to the west of Delos is the historic island of RINIA resting place of the ancient dead.

MIDDLE CYCLADES - SERIFOS, is like a huge rock rising out of the water with excellent sandy beaches; SIFNOS, bare and mountainous, is topped with gleaming white churches and monasteries, as well as olive groves dotted with white villages; PAROS , a well-known tourist destination and source of the some of the best white marble in the world and ANTIPAROS to the south-west with a famous cave, shallow water and great beaches; NAXOS, the largest island of the complex with the highest, pyramid-like mountain, fertile valleys and Venetian towers. It is a busy and popular tourist resort; Finally, AMORGOS, the most easterly of the Cyclades and close to the Dodecanese islands , with two ports, and some of the best beaches - only accessible by boat.

LESSER CYCLADES - DONOUSA, IRAKLIA, SCHINOUSA and KOUFONISI. These islands were off the commercial route for years, but have since been discovered and are admired for their unspoilt beauty and simple way of life. The leeward ports and bays are perfect for sailing boats and were once a favourite hiding place of pirates!

SOUTHERN CYCLADES - MILOS is of volcanic origin with wonderfully shaped and coloured rock formations, caves, coves and quiet beaches, home of the famous Aphrodite statue which resides in the Louvre; Nearby is KIMOLOS, the island of chalk and a little out of the mainstream tourist trail; FOLEGANDROS is a small and peaceful island only recently 'discovered' by tourists. Many of its fine beaches are only accessible by boat. SIKINOS, with its northern cliff-lined coast, famous for its olives that are said to make the very best olive oil; IOS, reputed to be the most beautiful island in the Cyclades, and home to the 1km long Lylopotas beach - one of the finest in Greece . This island is a gathering place of the young from all the corners of the world; THIRA (SANTORINI), perhaps the most famous of all Greek islands, known for its upmarket tourism, excellent nightlife, volcanic beaches and wild beauty. Its popularity makes it very crowded in the summer months, the only really good anchorage point is in the marina which requires a daily fee and, for this reason, its gets very busy; Lastly, ANAFI, a quiet and simple cone shaped island on the south-eastern extremity of the Cyclades.

Sailing conditions

Known as the windy isles, this island complex is recommended for more experienced sailors, who don't mind some challenging sailing. There are plenty of islands to explore - quiet and relaxed to busy and lively. Alternatively, a skippered or crewed charter with an experienced local skipper is recommended and compatriots with a sense of adventure! Being comfortable on a boat is imperative. The prevailing wind in the summer is the "Meltemi", which blows from the North / North West. Starting  in June, it blows stronger in July and August at Force 5-6 and may occasionally reach Force 8-9. It could blow for 1-3 days or two weeks at a time.  It can get extremely windy and has been known to de-mast yachts!

During the quieter spring and autumn months, strong winds from the South may blow. Great care is needed and daily weather reports should be consulted. It is also a good idea to find out where the safe ports are, according to which wind is blowing.

Rostov is the capital of Southern Russia, with a population of close to 15,000 Jews. Prior to WWII it was a thriving hub of Jewish life. Tragically, during the war it was also the site of the worst mass execution of Jews in Russia, where over 20,000 Jews perished over the course of two horrific days. Today the community is springing back to life, with one of the most active youth groups in Russia, a Jewish day school, an overnight camp, a dynamic women's club, a busy humanitarian aid service, and new programs every year.
