There’s Probably a Ghostbusters Car For Rent In Your Town

Ecto-1 is EVERYWHERE.

ghostbuster car near me

When it comes to iconic movie cars, Ghostbusters ‘ Ecto-1 is right up there with Doc Brown’s Delorean, the Batmobile, the Mystery Machine, and James Bond ‘s Aston Martin. And if you are a die-hard fan of the franchise, you can almost certainly rent a replica of the vehicle pretty much anywhere in the United States. Here’s how.

Sites like Cars As Rentals and Drive Share offer you the chance to rent the Ecto-1 and other legendary cars from movies and TV shows for a day (typically for a few hundred bucks, though prices do vary). If you’re worried about the car looking like a lemon, Cars As Rentals’ vehicle has been featured on several TV shows, including Screen Machines and Cars That Rock. It’s even been autographed by Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Ray Parker Jr., Ivan Reitman and his son Jason (who is directing the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife ).

There are tons of these types of operations all around the country, so if you want the Ecto-1 at your party or event, you can almost certainly make that happen regardless of location.

If you’re a true Ghostbusters fanatic and just renting the Ecto-1 isn’t good enough for you, you could also go the route of Barrie J. Clark, who managed to build his own version of the car after making his own DIY Ghostbusters costume five years ago. The 56-year-old went all-out, as his replica includes a full-size Proton Pack, a full-size head of Dana Barrett’s “Zuul,” and a projector inside that makes it look like ghosts are spinning around the inside of the car.

But if that is outside of your budget, you can always just hire a Ghostbuster to come to a birthday or holiday party you’re hosting. They only cost about $200 to be at an event for up to an hour and, at the very least, they can make sure your party is free of any ghouls or spirits .

In Photos: Florida Family Turns Kia Soul into 'Ghostbusters' Ectomobile

This love of ghostbusters is a true family affair., madison dapcevich, published jun 8, 2021.

A family in Florida took their love for the film franchise "Ghostbusters" to new heights — and onto new wheels — when they turned their Kia Soul into what they have dubbed the “Ecto-Soul,” nicknamed for the ghost-catching vehicle, the Ectomobile or Ecto-1. (The original was a 1959 Cadillac Ambulance Miller-Meteor, according to the Internet Movie Cars Database .)

Photographs of the vehicle, and the people who drive it, were shared online after the Tampa Bay Times shared the Wittmaak family’s story in early June 2021.

Snopes spoke with Stephen Wittmaak who said that he founded the Ghostbuster fan group, the Lost Spirits Division, in 2017. Membership is a mix of new members from the Wittmaak family and members that left another local group, the Real Tampa Bay Ghostbusters.

“We are a local Florida Ghostbuster franchise dedicated to community and charity events,” said Wittmaak. “As our membership is small, we tend to act as a liaison with other groups adding to their numbers for their hosted events with ourselves, our gear, and of course our Ecto.”

Wittmaak told Snopes that there are more than 500 Ghostbusters fan groups around the world while the Ghostbusters Fans Worldwide group on Facebook has over 11,000 international members. Groups like the Lost Spirits Division dress in costume and support charity events around the state. And as many of these events were postponed or canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic, the premier of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" was similarly delayed from its July 2020 release for a second time, from June to November 2021.

To ease the let-down of another delay, Wittmaak and his family turned their Kia Soul into the EctoSoul to inspire smiles from familiar and unfamiliar faces.

“Why the Ecto? Every franchise group has two things, a franchise patch that's kind of branding or a group "coat of arms" and an Ecto of some sort,” said Wittmaak. “Our group didn't have one, and we started with just Ghostbusters stickers on our cars. Big car magnets. Even that got a lot of smiles from kids and passersby and really made me want to tinker and one-up it.”

The car in question is actually the second Ecto. The first was a 2010 Scion XD (nicknamed the Ecto 1XD) that was totaled in September 2020. In the first phase, Wittmaak said that he added basic car stickers and a roof light. The second phase brought with it a base roof rack, cylinders, and front plates while the third phase brought under-glow lights, interior lights, and an equipment rack. Wittmaak said that he plans to upgrade the roof light, horn, and Bluetooth speaker, as well as add a remote start and — perhaps one day — a hover conversion.

Ghostbusters Ecto 1 For Sale

MMS ID 66006 (created by CM Utility)

By Colin Bird

Last year we revisited some of the most memorable movie cars of all time. Now, No. 9 on that list can be plucked from the sliver screen and put into your driveway — for the right price. While surfing eBay, we spotted a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor endloader combination car up for auction — probably best remembered as the Ectomobile in the film “Ghostbusters.”

The seller looks legit and seems to have all the proper paperwork that proves this is one of three original vehicles from the “Ghostbusters” franchise. However, this particular model spent most of its time exclusively as an attraction for the Universal Studios theme parks and not in the films.

The current owner bought the vehicle in 2006 and has restored it back into shape – he says it even drives well. New items for this Caddy wagon are a set of Coker 4-inch whitewall tires and a new headliner. This striking piece of childhood nostalgia can be yours for the right bid, which currently stands at $45,000.00.

A Detailed Look At The Ghostbusters Car: The “Ecto-1” Ectomobile

Ghostbusters  is a timeless classic film that has spawned multiple sequels and reboots. Many fans love the Ghostbusters car, a rapid-response ghost-busting vehicle. The converted Cadillac is called the Ectomobile or Ecto-1. It is one of the most memorable cars from movies , of all time. This fictional station wagon had a fascinating story, and the car used in the original movie survives to this day.

In the 1984 paranormal comedy film,  Ghostbusters , a team of parapsychologists battle ghosts haunting New York City. Dan Aykroyd wrote the script and starred alongside Bill Murray.

During the movie, the team decides they need a dedicated Ghostbusters car to respond to supernatural emergencies. Dr. Ray Stantz (Aykroyd) arrives at their base in a 1959 Cadillac hearse and announces, “Everybody can relax; I found the car.”

To the shock of Venkman (Murray), Stantz admits the 25-year-old vehicle needs “suspension work and shocks, brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear end… maybe new rings, also mufflers, a little wiring…” To make matters worse, Stantz says he paid $4800 for the jalopy.

But they fix up the long-wheelbase wagon and paint it white. Then, they decorate it with their logo and number. They also install a siren, a roof-full of gadgets, and a ladder. Next, they convert the ambulance’s pull-out gurney into a rack to hold their ghost-capturing proton packs. Then, they use the unique Ghostbusters car to respond to ghost sightings and hauntings all over the city.

The resulting vehicle is nothing short of zany. It is easily one of our favorite 80s movie cars . It has four headlights, a station-wagon body bracketed by 1950s fins, steel rims, and worn-out chrome. The Ectomobile’s NY license plate reads “Ecto-1”. It was a central piece of both 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II.

The Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car began life as an ambulance

In Dan Aykroyd’s original screenplay, the writer specified that the Ectomobile was a converted 1959 ambulance. His vision was of a black car topped with white and purple strobe lights imbuing it with a “purple aura.” But much of the movie takes place at night, and the film crew decided that a black Ectomobile would not show up on screen very well. For this reason, they decided to paint it bright white.

The film crew eventually purchased a 1959 Cadillac series 62. It had been converted into an ambulance by the Miller-Meteor company in Piqua, Ohio, which built limousines, ambulances, and hearses.

The picture-car department decorated the Cadillac and installed all the prop gadgets on its roof. The crew also leased a black Cadillac hearse for Stantz’s jalopy’s pre-restoration scenes. Unfortunately, during the filming of  Ghostbusters II , the original Ghostbusters car “died.” The team scrambled to buy another, more reliable model to complete the movie. After both films wrapped, Universal Studios purchased the original, leased jalopy to convert into a third Ectomobile for display purposes.

The Ectomobile appears in Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The surviving Miller-Meteor converted Ectomobile appeared in multiple museum displays and drove in various parades. But, by 2009 it needed, “A lot of work.” So, Sony Studios gave the Ghostbusters car to Cinema Vehicle Services to restore. The team fully refurbished the classic movie car.

The Vehicle Services team stripped the car back to metal, installed new sheet metal where needed, and repainted the entire vehicle. They hunted down new trim or refurbished the old chrome. They even bought a fresh windshield from a parts car in South Africa. Finally, the restoration team updated all the rooftop gadgets with modern bulbs and electric motors.

The Ectomobile will reprise its role–along with Murray and Aykroyd–in the upcoming sequel  Ghostbusters: Afterlife . In the movie, Ecto-1 appears abandoned in a barn , but still runs well enough to drift across a wheat field. For this sequel, the film crew upgraded the Ghostbusters car with a slide-out “gunner’s seat” and even swapped a modern Chevrolet LS V8 engine into the Ectomobile . This supernatural comedy also stars Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard. It was directed by Jason Reitman.  Ghostbusters: Afterlife  hits theaters on November 19th, 2021.

PICS: Up Close With The Original 1984 Ghostbusters Movie Car, ECTO-1

ECTO-1. One of the most recognizable vanity license plates in cinema.

And it’s over at the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle this weekend. One of those will make any movie buff happy – they’ve rolled out from California the original Ghostbusters car from 1984.

The base of the vehicle is a 1959 Cadillac GM professional chassis – made for hearses and ambulances.

It’s owned by Sony Pictures and normally lives in Culver City, CA. Locally there was the Great Lakes Ghostbuster Coalition repping it and taking pictures with fans, Michael Brewer and Adam Lallone. There’s a new Ghostbusters movie due to come out next month – July 15, 2016 – so they’re obviously making the P.R. rounds.

The car still runs and drives (though for the most part it was transported over, and then took a drive across the Belle Isle Bridge – that must have been a sight), and it’s interesting to see what’s obviously props under close inspection, but it’s cool a blast from more than 30 years ago of cinema past.

The car will be on Belle Isle at the Grand Prix today and tomorrow. Look for the Sony setup near the entrance. More pics below.

Ghostbusters Ecto-1 lookalike is coming to Grand Theft Auto Online

  • June 13, 2023

ghostbuster car near me

Bustin’ is about to make players of Grand Theft Auto Online feel good, as with the new San Andreas Mercenaries  update, it’s been revealed that an upcoming vehicle will take heavy inspiration from the Ghostbusters Ecto-1!

Listed as the Albany Brigham, while not exact, the car is an homage to the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor, being altered just enough to dance around copyright, not only from General Motors but seemingly Columbia Pictures, as decking the car out in the caution-striped heavy Ghosts Exposed livery, will make it appear as if drove right off a New York City film set.

While the new update is now live, the Brigham is part of GTA’s drip-feed content, meaning that at this time, the car has yet to release officially, with this update coming from PC players who, through mods, have gained access to the vehicle early, with YouTuber Aziial showcasing a host of customization options, among them the classic white body, red fins, and white wall tires combo, in addition to a livery more akin to a 1950s ambulance and the aforementioned Ghostbusters -inspired Ghosts Exposed .

PC players have also begun digging deep into the update’s raw data, revealing an upcoming event, most likely around the Halloween season , with players needing to snap photos of ghosts, sending them into Los Santos ‘ supposed team of paranormal eliminators , Ghosts Exposed.

We should make it clear that at this time, Rockstar Games has yet to confirm the Albany Brigham or the assumed limited-time event; however, if/when they do, we’ll be sure to update accordingly, so stay tuned!

Ghostbusters Tribute! 1959 Pontiac Ambulance

Russ Dixon

Superior Coach Co. built quite a few ambulances and hearses between 1940 and 1980. They had a propensity for General Motors products, like this one which was based on a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville. We’re told it was used as a hearse in Mexico for quite a while and it later gained some Ghostbusters badging (for fun or profit). This one starts and drives, but it doesn’t stop so well and needs other work. It’s located in El Paso, Texas and available here on eBay here the Buy It Now price has been set at $13,750, although offers will be accepted. So, “Who ya gonna call?”

ghostbuster car near me

This ambulance/hearse was made by Superior Coach Co. The company was founded in 1909 and through the years constructed bodies for these professional types of vehicles as well as school buses. After these segments saw a downturn in business in the late 1970s, Superior was liquidated in 1980. From 1925 to its end, Superior was based out of Lima, Ohio. Somewhere along the way, this Pontiac Bonneville (and others like it no doubt} was transformed into a transport of a more somber nature, like relocating the departed or nearly departed.

ghostbuster car near me

The ambulance used in the Ghostbusters franchise is called the Ectomobile , or Ecto-1, and it was based on a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Futura Duplex. This was a limo-style, end-loader combination car (ambulance conversion). Special modifications were made to it to be used in the film. Other than the graphics on this ’59 Pontiac, it looks as though no other effects from the movies made it to this vehicle.

ghostbuster car near me

The seller refers to this ambulance as the “Ghost of Ecto-1”. As the story goes, it found its way south of the border perhaps decades ago and was used for what it was intended, an emergency vehicle. The seller has some paperwork for it that is dated for that period. However, the transport also has an old New York registration dated before 1972 which is considered acceptable today for transference in many states. So, your guess is as good as mine which documentation takes preference and if any hardship will be involved taking ownership.

ghostbuster car near me

We’re told this Pontiac is a driver, but only in an empty lot because the brakes are weak. The Pontiac V8 that it would have come with (389?) is long-gone, having been replaced at some point with a small-block Chevy V8 of undetermined displacement. The body is said to have some rust, but it doesn’t jump out at you. The interior may need more attention, with the seats and floor covers having long ago lost their fabric.

ghostbuster car near me

So, to continue on, this vehicle needs a restoration. But what direction to take it in? Restore it to its original purpose, but how would you use it? Or go further down the Ghostbusters! path and make it more like the Cadillac that starred in the movies. Either way, it might serve best for advertising or events around Halloween. Here’s a clip of the movie’s theme song by Ray Parker Jr., which reached #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 in 1984. You know you want to hear it now!

I see no stickers on the windows that this was ever in Mexico.

When you get a plate in any Mexican state it comes with a sticker of that plate to put in the window and all registration stickers also go in the windows.

I think this car was used just south of the border but never legally registered in Mexico so the New York registration would be the only thing you have to show ownership.

If you look at one of the pictures on Ebay, it shows a temporary Texas paper plate so it looks like the current owner did use that New York registration to get that.

With that being said, I think the price is really high. The original engine is long gone and there is no emergency equipment on it, so you are starting from scratch with this car.

Bill McCoskey

Miguel, I agree with you.

Plus, if the car has any export or import paperwork registered with the US government, showing it was exported to Mexico and then imported back again, that New York registration is worthless.

ghostbuster car near me

I love the back end of this car. Such awesome lines and those wild windows. It needs a lot of work and I don’t know if I’d keep it a hearse set up or what. Weird that they through an SBC but oh well. It needs some interesting wheels and get rid of the ghost stickers for dure. You just never see these so it is speacial.

ghostbuster car near me

Spectacular roof line but blah front end.

ghostbuster car near me

They’re nuts. Milked that “white vintage ambulance/Ghostbuster” car to the end. It’s not even the right make. The movie came on the other day, and like Wizard of Oz, or Blues Brothers, you just gotta watch the whole thing, very fun movie, but to have every white ambulance to come down the pike, dressed up as Ecto-1, is too much. I suppose old ambulances/hearses aren’t really good for anything else.

ghostbuster car near me

I love the movie, but the last 15-30 minutes are the best in my opinion. “Let’s show this prehistoric B**** how we do things downtown!” :)

They are good for the enjoyment of the drive.

ghostbuster car near me

the Ghostbusters fan base is incredibly active. There are local franchises (clubs) across the country that get together to build replica equipment and then make appearances at places like hospitals and parades to “raise spirits” Most, if not all of these groups will only do paid things to raise money for charities. It is mainly for that reason I don’t mind seeing a portion of these old retired ambulances re-purposed as an ectomobile. Some of these groups will deck out whatever car they have. Ford Explorers, Pontiac Vibes, Scion XBs etc… . It may not be on-screen correct, but it follows the “spirit” of the boys in the original movie talking about growing their business. In the movie world if they had ever franchised, as Peter Venkman suggested in GB1, you know that not every group across the country would be using a 59 Miller Meteor. they would have bought whatever vehicle would haul the equipment. In that mindset this car is perfect! I’d be happy to see it go either way. a restoration would be beautiful. and an ectomobile would be cool too! just do it right! not just a red and white paintjob and a couple stickers. Old service vehicles are very expensive to restore and have a limited appeal. so remember that many of these would no longer exist at all if it were not for a dedicated fan base that is willing to dump the money into a project like this

A local guy has a PT Cruiser as his Ectomobile – looks pretty cool. I see it driving around and at a show one time. He had a really cool looking backpack that he had made – lots of blinking lights!

Sweet looking ambulance. I’ve seen 1959 Pontiacs, but never a 59 Ambulances. My favourite cars have always been the 1959 Chevy, the 1959 Olds, and the 59 Pontiac. While I also like the 59 Cadillac, I don’t know made the producers decide to use it as the Ecto-1.

“…it doesn’t stop so well and needs other work.” Then it would be the perfect mode of transportation!

Dr Ray Stantz: Everybody can relax, I found the car. Needs some suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear-end.

Back in about 1965, there was a dispute between ambulance companies in El Paso Tx . My Dad borrowed an ambulance like this from Van Horn Tx. It had a huge siren mounted on the fender and a red rotating beacon on the roof. The siren would turn in the wind as you drove. It was a blast to ride in as a 12 year old! Wow, great old memory!

Hi Mike! Great to hear from you again! Traded my Charger for a 1-owner 2010 Mercury Mariner for the girls. It’s all good though, they really like it. As for this car, lose the Ghostbusters crap, restore the body and drive line, and put it to work in the cadaver transport business. Those folks make $70K a year moving bodies from morgues to medical schools. Morbid? yeah but if you treat it as a business, it’s not that bad. If you think about the business side, it makes sense and the car earns its keep.

Most [if not all] states regulate the transportation of human bodies. Every hospital has contracts with specific firms to provide the service. Most of the removal companies are part of a funeral home chain.

And the last thing you want to use is a vehicle that attracts attention! The majority of the removal vehicles today, are mini vans without side windows, or the windows are dark tinted. Those who do the job keep the lowest profile they can. This allows them to make other stops along the way, like running thru a drive thru [typically bank or fast food].

If you live or work in a populated area, chances are that sometime a dark blue mini van sitting next to you at a traffic light, the one with the dark windows, will be transporting a client who never complains.

Back in the early 1980s I used to provide subcontracted load deck assemblies to my friend Joe Thacker in Washington DC, for use in Mercury and Chrysler station wagons, that his company converted for just this kind of work. The folding seat was replaced with a longer load deck. Plus latches along the sides for the gurney to attach to, as well as the dark tinted glass from the door posts rearward.

Here’s what Coachbuilt.com says about Thacker Coach: http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/t/thacker/thacker.htm

Oh, that’s just great, Bill. Now when I pull up next to a dark blue mini-van I’m gonna be afraid to look over at it. Bwaa-ha-ha!

Along the same lines, I always thought a funeral home could offer a premium option of using a vintage hearse. I bet a lot of car guys and gals would prefer to take their last trip in a restored classic instead of a nothing special modern car.

Believe it or not banjo, most people don’t pay attention to the hearse used.

Back in the ’80s a friend was asked to bring his 1959 Superior limo style out for a funeral because their car had broken down.

My buddy was worried the whole time because his plate said I BURY YOU. Not one person noticed that detail or even commented on the age or style of the car.

Great you got rid of the Charger Ken. I got new ride myself, a wheelcair. LOL! I broke my neck in early November, been underground for a while. I will send an email soon buddy. 14 below and snow tonight, I wish I was down by you at that cool outdoor pub! Take care, Mike.

I get your point Bill, but that’s what a friend’s dad did to start his ambulance service over 50 years ago. Mr. Belcher started out with a ’58 Cadillac with a Superior body–not much different than the the Pontiac shown here. From there, he grew his business to be the biggest business of its kind in the state of Illinois. And it’s funny you should mention Ford and Mercury service cars in that the company purchased a Ford LTD based hearse in the late ’70s. By the time my buddy inherited the business, he was driving that very car the day we had a few beers together at a neighbor’s house. He was pretty much wasted, so my neighbor took his keys and let him sleep it off at his place til he sobered up enough to make it home that next day. Neither my neighbor or myself knew there was a body in the back of that rig, but it was sure a nice looking hearse.

I know of a few funeral homes who do offer the option of a vintage hearse, but only because those funeral home owners already collect vintage cars and/or hearses. They tell me very few people opt for the vintage versions.

The primary reason funeral homes have little or no incentive to offer an alternative to their modern hearse is financial. The cost of a new Cadillac hearse is often in excess of $100,000. They need to sell the use of that rapidly depreciating asset while they can, so virtually every level of funeral packages they offer, will have the hearse included.

The public has also been conditioned by the funeral industry to want conformity and dignity during the funeral. This plays into the expectation that the limousines provided for the family and close friends, shall be of matching color and brand name. The industry encourages the use of Cadillac limos following a matching Cadillac hearse. In fact most funeral home information packages tout “matching” hearse & limousines.

Cadillac has long been the leader in the commercial chassis business. This was no accident. In the 1950s GM made the decision to continue semi-mass production of the long wheelbase series 75 limousine & sedan, and the much longer bare commercial chassis for hearse & ambulance construction. With the elimination of Packard as a provider of a LWB chassis in 1955, and the decision to go with unit-body construction for all Lincolns starting in 1958 [at a time when the technology didn’t exist to stretch regular unit-body sedans more than a few inches], the competition basically handed GM the hearse, ambulance, and limousine business, and the competition has never been able to “take back” the funeral trade.

Lincoln did take back a large segment of the commercial limo business in the 1980s, when they began offering their cars with a factory heavy duty suspension & brake upgrades, but only for cars destined to be stretched. They did this by raiding the component parts bins of the Ford Truck division! The way Lincoln devised this strategy, allowed them to meet new Federal regulations that impacted the heavier limousines.

Well it seems I’ve gone off on another tangent, time to go back to work!

Another entertaining and informative post from my bud Bill! :-)

Great insight! Thanks for the follow-up to my pondering. It answered some questions I’ve had for a long time.
