Ghost Window in Windows 11

157203-ghost-screen.jpg

I upgraded to Windows 11 and now I have this constant Ghost Screen on my laptop display. If I hover over it, is shows a processing blue circle that never stops. I have no idea what it is and it never goes away. Any screen area under it can not be accessed. Very annoying.

Any ideas? Thanks Sue Darte

Thank you, it worked. By far the best explanation with link. Ty

You need to turn off a couple of taskbar animations ( Advanced System Settings -> Advanced -> Performance -> Setting ). I can't remember what animation exactly, but you can change in turn and find out which one is responsible for that effect.

for some reason my drop down tabs are invisible, when i click on the dropdown, i can select the content, its only happening on my second monitor, when i drag to 1st screen, its shows content clearly? 195689-drop-down-invisible.png

That is the search widget failing for some reason. The ghost screen you see is the search widget stuck in a loop. This widget comes up whenever you hover over the search icon on the task bar in windows 11.

A quick and easy way to fix this is to bring up task manager, search for windows explorer under processes and restart it. That should reset the taskbar and everything else that runs off it. Hope that fixes the issue.

Spot on Ajas!

This is the answer that helped my solve my users problem. Thank you and good catch!

This is the simplest answer to the question. It works 100%. Thank you.

"A quick and easy way to fix this is to bring up task manager, search for windows explorer under processes and restart it. That should reset the taskbar and everything else that runs off it. Hope that fixes the issue."

This is actually the worst answer ever. How do you expect people to know this? Do you think that windows users are all programmers?

This should be downvoted 1000 times.

The real answer is that WIndows 11 has a bug. Period. And that bug sucks. Fix it.

Perfect solution. Resolved the issue. Thankyou

I also have that issue, and I figured out that I can simply restart Windows Explorer. It works for me!

This is easy. https://imgur.com/a/tDM3Wdj (I can't attach the file because its too large) By the way, to start the task manager, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard and click on "More Details".

In my case, restarting was a solution that was temporary. It kept coming back, sometimes within hours. This solution seems fine, it has not recurred for 2 days now.

@Kevin Brown , you're what's wrong with the world.

If you don't understand something, ask questions which others might be able to help answer instead of just complaining/criticizing without adding any value to the conversation.

@Ajas Rehman 's answer is excellent and fixed my problem.

See the answer by LimitlessTechnology-2700. Turn off " drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop ".

Task killing file explorer is not a solution. This problem comes back within minutes. Task killing a program does not prevent anything and is the same sort of "fix" as press and hold the power button to restart Windows.

Excellent solution - quick, easy & it works.

the link was perfect! it showed exactly what to do to resolve this annoying issue. thank you very very much!!!

You're right, it is a bug. But while I wait for it to get fixed in an update, this is an adequate workaround.

Spot on, Ajas!! Thank you, wish I had seen your post sooner :) !!

Excellent fix Ajas! :)

Hello @Sue Darte

This shadow is a known issue with certain windows 11 devices and a simple update will sort this out. If the update doesn't sort this issue try running the SFC and DISM command and this will surely sort the Issue.

If none of them are helpful try the below steps -Press the Win + R keys together on your keyboard to open the Run command window.

  • In the Run command search field, type sysdm.cpl and hit Enter to open the System Properties window. -In the System Properties dialogue box, select the Advanced tab . under the Visual Effects tab, look for Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop and uncheck the option. Once it is done try restarting and see if that sorts the issue.

Hope this resolves your Query!!

Guys, you don't need to struggle so hard running strange commands and having errors.

Just restart explorer. It works for me.

I have the same issue, and when it appears, just press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to start task manager, click the More Details button, find the Windows Explorer and click the restart button at the bottom.

Its Simple!

This is the correct answer that actually works. Thanks!

A correct and uncomplicated answer that works!

  • Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  • Patiently scroll further down to windows explorer
  • right-click
  • select Restart

This worked, thanks

The problem seems to be that if you move the mouse over the search icon at exactly the right speed the search hover menu for the search icon crashes because you move off of the icon before it has finished it's animation and rendering.

The solution is:

  • Right-click on the task bar
  • Click on taskbar settings
  • Turn off Search (it is redundant anyways - just click Start and start typing to open the search box)

If you have the problem at the time, restart Windows Explorer as described in other posts here (Ctrl+Shift+Esc , press w (to jump to the "W"s), right-click on Windows Explorer, click Restart)

BTW (for beginners): I am using "right-click" as shorthand for secondary click which may be 2-finger click, 2-finger tap, long touch (or left-click if using a left-handed mouse) depending on your device.

There is a ghost window on my desktop that won't go away (picture)

Sorry for the title, I'm not sure how to describe this thing. Its like a ghost window that is tied to the desktop (?) and overlays any application I open. It blocks all interaction with that part of the desktop/application/whatever I'm running and I have no idea where its coming from or how to get rid of it.

The purpose of the ghost image is to enable a quick restore of a system or offer data restoration support. In a nutshell, the ghost can include two aspects: system ghost and data ghost.

How do I get rid of a ghost window?

Table of Contents

What is a Ghost Window?

A ghost window, also known as a phantom window, is a window that appears on your desktop even though the application it belongs to is not open. It is essentially an empty window frame that shows up without any content inside.

Ghost windows usually occur when an application crashes or fails to close properly. Parts of the application may still be running in the background, causing the window to still appear on screen. However, since the program is not fully responsive, you cannot interact with the window at all.

Ghost windows can be frustrating because they take up space on your desktop and can overlap or obscure other open windows. Thankfully, getting rid of a ghost window is usually simple. Here are the common causes of ghost windows and how to remove them for good.

Common Causes of Ghost Windows

There are a few common culprits that tend to produce ghost windows on computers:

  • Application crashes or hangs: If an application encounters an error or hangs, it may not close out its windows properly. This leaves behind empty ghost windows.
  • Improperly closed apps: Force quitting an application or using Task Manager to end a process can sometimes leave windows dangling.
  • Display driver issues: Faulty or outdated graphics drivers can cause glitches that lead to ghost windows.
  • Multiple displays: On multi-monitor setups, an app window may get stranded on the wrong display.
  • Malware/spyware: Rarely, ghost windows may be caused by malicious software installing unwanted programs.

So if you notice a persistent ghost window after an application crashes or hangs, that is likely the source of the problem. Other times, it may not be clear what app the window belonged to.

How to Get Rid of a Ghost Window

Here are some step-by-step methods to try removing a stubborn ghost window from your desktop:

Method 1: Restart the Associated Application

If you can identify the application that the ghost window is coming from, restarting the app is worth a try:

  • Right click on the ghost window and choose Close Window.
  • Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc (on Windows) or Command + Option + Esc (on Mac).
  • Look for the associated application under the Processes tab.
  • Select the application process and click End Task to force quit it.
  • Reopen the application normally and see if the ghost window is gone.

Restarting the app essentially forces it to reload which may clear out any stuck windows. This method works well if you know which application the window is associated with.

Method 2: Log Out and Back In

If you cannot identify the source application or restarting it did not work, logging out and back into your account often helps:

  • Save any open work and close any programs.
  • Click the Start menu or Apple menu and select Log Out, Sign Out, or a similar option.
  • At the login screen, sign back into your user account as normal.
  • Once logged back in, check if the ghost window still appears.

Logging out resets the entire user session and clears out any stuck application processes when you log back in. Just make sure to save your work first.

Method 3: Use Task Manager to End Processes

Task Manager provides a way to view and force quit any processes associated with a ghost window:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager on Windows or Command + Option + Esc on Mac.
  • Click on More Details if needed to expand Task Manager.
  • Go to the Processes tab.
  • Look for any application process that could be related to the ghost window.
  • Select the process and click End Task to terminate it.
  • Repeat for any other suspicious processes.

Ending the process from Task Manager can close orphaned windows if rebooting the app itself does not work.

Method 4: Update or Reinstall Display Drivers

On Windows, faulty display drivers are a common source of ghost windows. Updating them may help:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and choosing it.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right click on your graphics card driver and select Update driver.
  • Allow Windows to automatically search and install an updated driver.
  • Restart your computer after the driver update.

If updating does not work, try uninstalling the display driver completely, rebooting, and reinstalling the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website.

On Macs, graphics driver issues are less common, but you can try downloading the latest macOS updates which may contain fixes.

Method 5: Reset Window Manager

The window manager is what keeps track of open application windows. Resetting it may clear out phantom windows:

**On Windows:**

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Go to the Details tab.
  • Find the process called explorer.exe.
  • Select it and click Restart to restart the process.

**On Mac:**

  • Open Activity Monitor in /Applications/Utilities/
  • Search for WindowServer under Process Name.
  • Select it and click the “X” icon to force quit it.

Restarting the window manager essentially reloads the list of open windows which may eliminate any ghost windows.

Method 6: Check for Malware

While less likely, malware or adware could potentially cause ghost windows to appear as unwanted programs load.

Run a full system antivirus scan to check for any infections. On Windows, use built-in Microsoft Defender or third-party software like Malwarebytes. On Mac, try built-in tools like XProtect or MalwareBytes for Mac.

Removing any malware or unwanted programs can clear up ghost windows happening due to malicious software.

How to Prevent Ghost Windows

To avoid dealing with ghost windows in the first place, here are some tips:

  • Close apps properly: Always use the Close button or Quit/Exit command instead of forcing apps to close.
  • Update apps/OS: Keep your applications and operating system updated to avoid crashes.
  • Don’t overload system resources: Ghost windows can appear if you have too many intensive apps open at once.
  • Check for driver/software conflicts: Conflicts between software and drivers can cause glitches leading to ghost windows.
  • Use a task manager: Use Task Manager or Activity Monitor to periodically end unwanted processes.
  • Reboot regularly: Reboot your computer every few days to clear out any stuck processes.

Following general computer maintenance best practices can go a long way towards avoiding ghost window issues.

Ghost windows are harmless, but can get in the way by cluttering up your desktop. Thankfully, they are usually easy to banish.

Try restarting the associated app, logging out and back in, closing processes in Task Manager, updating drivers, or resetting the window manager. For prevention, always close programs properly, keep software updated, avoid overloading your system, and reboot regularly.

With the right technique, you can exorcise ghost windows and restore a clean desktop. Just be patient and persistent until you find the solution that works. The phantom window will soon disappear so you can get back to uninterrupted productivity.

What is Windows 11 Ghost box issue? How to fix it?

Some of you might have noticed a “Ghost Box” just above the search feature on your screen if you are using Windows 11. The ghost box or ghost window occurs above the taskbar when the search option in Windows 11 gets stuck while finding results.

According to computerhope.com, here are the two ways you can try to resolve the ghost box issue on Windows 11:

Temporary fix: If you don’t want to restart your system but have to get rid of the ghost box, here are the steps: ― Close any File Explorer windows that are open. ― Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager. ― On the Processes tab, go to the Windows Explorer process and choose it. Select the Restart option on the bottom-right corner of the window. ― The ghost window will disappear temporarily. It will appear once more after the restart process is over.

Note: If you are unable to view the Windows Explorer option in the Task Manager, it means that some Explorer windows are still open. Close them before you reattempt the process.

Permanent fix:

To prevent the ghost window permanently, here is the step-by-step process: ― Go to the Taskbar settings after you right-click the Taskbar. ― Expand the Taskbar items and click the Search toggle to switch it to the off position. ― Since the Search Window widget is turned off, the ghost box issue will disappear permanently.

Note: You can still use the Windows key and type your query to perform searches in the Windows Search Box.

How to Fix Ghost windows in Windows 11

You can achieve the goal by restarting Windows Explorer, disabling MiniSearchHost, Updating or Reinstalling your displayer driver or Running DISM and SFC, etc. You can try these solutions in turn, and I believe there is always a way to help you solve this problem.

The first workaround is by restarting Windows Explorer, which allows you to fix the problem without restarting your computer. You can remove the ghost window when it appears by following the graphic steps below.

Step 1. Click on the Search icon in Windows 11.

Step 2. Type Task Manager in the search field.

Step 3. Double-click on Task Manager to launch the app .

Step 4. Select the Processes tab.

Step 5. Right-click on Windows Explorer and select Restart .

Note: If you don't see the Windows Explorer process, you may have one or more File Explorer windows still open. Close all open File Explorer windows, then look for the Windows Explorer process in the Task Manager.

Besides the first method, you can also adopt disabling MiniSearchHost to solve the Ghost problem on the Windows 11 home screen. And you just need to follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open the Task Manager .

Step 2. Click on the Processes tab.

Step 3. Locate the MiniSearchHost process.

Step 4. Right-click on it and select End task .

Note: If you can’t find MiniSearchHost on the Processes tab, click on the Details tab. You can find it there.

If you have tried the first two methods in turn, but the problem still persists, then you can try the next method, which is to update or reinstall your display driver. You can follow the steps below.

Step 1. Press Win + X to open the Device Manager .

Step 2. Expand the Display Adapters section.

Step 3. Right-click on your Display Driver and select Update driver .

Step 4. If the ghost boxes are still there, right-click again on your Display Driver . Then select Uninstall device .

Step 5. Restart your computer to automatically reinstall the driver.

There is another way to fix this Ghost windows on Windows 11 problem, you can use System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tools to fix corrupt or missing system files. You can follow the steps below.

Step 1. Press Win + S to open the search box, and type cmd then click on Run as administrator to open Command Prompt .

Step 2. Run the following commands one by one, hitting Enter after each command

  • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • sfc /scannow

Note: When the scan process is finished, you can input exit and press enter to leave the Command Prompt window.

Step 3. Restart your computer, and check the results.

Protect System Security from Problems

When a Windows 11 ghost window appears, anything behind it is inaccessible, including icons, text, and buttons. Then you can't use your computer normally. After you have fixed the problem through the above methods, it is recommended to back up your operating system regularly. This can effectively protect the security of the system. Even if you encounter damage to the operating system, or malware, inability to boot, drive failure, etc, you can quickly restore the system backup.

The free backup software AOMEI Backupper Standard can help you easily achieve the goal of regularly backing up your system. You can set different backup frequencies according to your needs. When you perform a scheduled backup, the software automatically selects the incremental backup method for you to improve backup efficiency and save disk space. You can choose to backup your system to different destination paths, and it also supports multiple Windows operating systems.

You can first download this software and install i t, and then follow the graphic tutorial below to operate. If you are a Windows Server user, you can choose the AOMEI Backupper Server version.

Step 1. First open the software, click Backup and then select System Backup .

Step 2. The software will automatically select the system partition and boot-related partitions. So you only need to select a destination .

Step 3. Click Start Backup to backup system before upgrade.

  • Options: It allows you to write comments, choose compression levels and set email notifications for system backup.
  • Schedule Backup: You can choose various backup frequencies such as Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Event trigger and USB plug in. The latter two features are supported by the Pro version.
  • Backup Scheme : It provides different backup methods, and if you upgrade to the pro version, you can also enable automatic backup cleanup feature to save you disk space.
  • Explore Image: If you just want to restore individual files or folders instead of the entire backup, you can mount the system image as virtual partitions with the Explore Image feature.

In Windows 11, the Search widget would sometimes get stuck and fail, causing a small "ghost" window to appear above the taskbar. When the ghost window appears, nothing behind it is accessible. This article introduces 4 ways to fix Ghost in Windows 11. You can try these solutions in turn, and I believe there is always a way to help you.

After you fix this problem, in order to avoid any subsequent problems that may cause damage to the system, it is recommended to use the free backup software AOMEI Backupper Standard to regularly back up the system. You can choose different backup frequencies and backup destination paths by yourself. It also supports multiple Windows operating systems.

Friday’s ‘Dateline’ features case of Austin jeweler whose son ordered his death

Posted: January 12, 2024 | Last updated: January 12, 2024

Friday’s episode of NBC’s ‘Dateline’ centers on the shocking murder of an Austin jeweler and the mastermind behind his death, the person his family least suspected: his own son.

The episode will feature interviews with Corey Shaughnessy, whose husband, Ted, was murdered after their son, Nicolas, hired a hitman to kill them both for insurance money. In a preview for Friday’s episode, “Dateline” host Andrea Canning asked Corey how she could “wrap her brain” around the case.

“You don’t,” Corey said, shaking her head. “You just don’t.”

Who was Ted Shaughnessy?

Ted Shaughnessy was a successful businessman in Austin, Texas, the owner of Gallerie Jewelers. In a preview for Friday’s episode of “Dateline,” friends remembered Ted as a kind, friendly, hardworking person who loved cars, cooking and his family.

“He was just very effusive, and just easy to be around, and very engaging,” Tad Cole, Ted’s best friend, told Dateline.

What happened to Ted and Corey Shaughnessy?

Late in the night of March 2, 2018, Ted and Corey Shaughnessy awoke to the sounds of intruders in their Austin home, per Fox 7 . Ted grabbed a gun and went to confront the men but was shot dead in the hallway, so Corey grabbed her own gun and returned fire on the intruders before hiding in a closet and calling 911.

Police determined the intruders had entered the home through an open window in the old bedroom of the Shaughnessy’s son, Nicolas, who was living nearby with his wife in College Station. They also found Nicolas’s cell phone had been used to disarm the house’s alarm system.

How did police catch Ted Shaughnessy’s killer?

After Ted’s murder, Nicolas and his wife, Jaclyn Edison, moved in to the Shaughnessy’s home. Per the Austin American-Statesman , Corey had no reason to believe Nicolas had anything to do with his father’s death and maintained her hope in his innocence even after police began investigating him.

However, detectives were able to follow Nicolas’s trail. Within a few months, they determined he and his wife had hired two hitmen to carry out the attack so they could cash in on the Shaughnessys’ life insurance, per FOX 7. The couple and the intruders, Arieon Smith and Johnny Leon, were arrested and charged with their corresponding roles in the murder, per Fox News .

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Corey spoke at a court hearing for Leon in 2021 and shared the betrayal she felt at the murder.

“Not me, my husband, anyone in our family or any of our friends could have ever imagined that Nicolas and Jackie would want to have us murdered,” she said.

Smith, Leon and Nicolas Shaughnessy were each sentenced to 35 years in prison, while Edison received 10 years probation, per Fox News.

How to watch tonight’s ‘Dateline’

Friday’s episode of “Dateline,” titled “Ghosts Can’t Talk,” will air on NBC at 9 p.m. MST and will be available for streaming on NBC’s website and Peacock the next day.

Consumer antivirus software providers for Windows

If you’re running a supported version of Windows, you’ve already got Microsoft Defender Antivirus built in, helping to protect you against viruses, spyware, and other malware.

Malware consists of viruses, spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is free and is included in Windows, always on and always working to protect your PC against malware.

Hackers and scammers sometimes use fake antimalware software to trick you into installing viruses or malware on your computer. Should you wish to explore alternatives to the already installed or available Microsoft antimalware software on your Windows PC, the reputable security companies listed below provide consumer security software that is compatible with Windows. Just click the company name to see the Windows-compatible product they offer.

For business security software that is compatible with Windows, please contact your security vendor of choice.

Many companies, including those listed on this page, distribute antimalware software. You should carefully investigate the source of antimalware and other products before downloading and installing them.

To learn more about protecting your Windows device see  Stay protected with Windows Security.

Important: Microsoft Defender Antivirus will turn off if you install another antimalware program to protect your PC. Before you install antimalware software, check to make sure you don't already have another 3rd party antimalware product on your computer. If you do, be sure to remove the product you don't want before you install the new one. It can cause problems on your computer to have two different antimalware products installed and running at the same time.

Note:  The antivirus providers listed on this page might be unavailable for your version of Windows or in your country or region.

i am using ghost with pe 5 on dell machines. i created an new image using windows 11 23H2 and ghost stops at 50% with no errors. Network admin worked with me for two hours and no errors other than just stopping.

i then ghosted the image from a external drive and got the following message:  "this application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way"

the first time is mentioned framenet. so i checked and my framenet was not installed (all versions). i installed them and retested. now i got the same error but a mention of runtime library. i downloaded and installed c++ distri library, cleaned up image and ghosted.

same error all the time now and haven't seen anything like this posted anywhere.

this all started in november 2023, so i figured, wait awhile, push more updates, cleanup and ghost. ~ still  , same runtime error.

i also went back and turned off new security feature core isolation and scan memory. no help.

any ideas?
