Royal Welsh Yacht Club, Caernarfon

The home of the Royal Welsh Yacht Club – the gatehouse known as Porth-yr-Aur – is believed to be the oldest premises owned by any sailing club. The structure was built c.1284 as the West Gate, or Watergate, of the walled town.

caernarfon-regatta

The club moved in to Porth-yr-Aur in 1854. Facilities included a reading room and billiard room. The drawing (courtesy of the RWYC) shows a Victorian regatta, with Porth-yr-Aur on the right.

In 1856 a warden’s bedroom was created in the loft. The warden from 1890 was Crimean War veteran Sgt Major William Tegarty, who wore the club’s uniform (blue coat and white or blue waistcoat). He died at the club house in 1898 and was succeeded by his widow Elizabeth, whose daughter Augusta became the warden in 1912. The club’s Tegarty Bar is named in their honour.

The RWYC’s first Commodore was Henry Paget, the first Marquis of Anglesey. He commanded the cavalry under the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo, where he lost his right leg.

The club’s first Vice-Commodore was the engineer Robert Stephenson, designer of the Britannia Bridge across the Menai Strait. The first Rear-Commodore and founder of the club was Sir Llewelyn Turner , Mayor of Caernarfon.

Club members have achieved great seafaring accomplishments, including major ocean crossings and circumnavigations of the world. Among them was Victoria Cross winner Lionel Rees , who in 1933 sailed his yacht solo to the Bahamas, Florida and New York, a feat which earned him a medal from the Cruising Club of America.

The club continues to organise sailing, rowing and social events, including the annual regatta.

Seeing red over Llanfyllin bricks

Unlike most old churches in Wales, St Myllin's in Llanfyllin, Powys, was made of brick, in the early 18th century. One Victorian vicar loathed the look and had ivy planted to cover the walls, as you can see in an old photo when you scan the new HistoryPoints ...

Royal Welsh Yacht Club

The Royal Welsh Yacht Club was founded in 1847 under the following circumstances : Previous to this year there had been several regattas held at Carnarvon, which had been got up through the efforts of the late Sir Llewelyn Turner, who was the first Rear-Commodore of the club, and who, later on, succeeded to the office of Commodore. These were well patronized by the gentry of the neighbourhood, who subscribed liberally to the funds, enabling the committee to offer substantial prizes, which resulted in keen competition by some of the crack vessels of the day from Dublin, Cork, the North of Ireland, Liverpool, and many other parts.

When, on a visit to the Harwich Regatta in 1846, Mr. Knight, the Rear-Commodore of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, who had attended some of these regattas at Carnarvon, suggested to Sir Llewelyn the desirability of the establishment at Carnarvon of a club to be called the Royal Welsh Yacht Club, the idea was at once taken up, and on his return Sir Llewelyn immediately set to work to put the project in motion. With the co-operation of the late Mr. Griffith, of Llanfair Hall, near Carnarvon, Mr. Pennant Lloyd (then Captain Iremonger) and others, the proposal soon became a reality. The club was formed, and on May 5, 1847, it received the warrant of the Lords of the Admiralty authorizing the fleet to wear the blue ensign of Her Majesty’s fleet, and three days later Queen Adelaide, the Queen-Dowager, bestowed her patronage upon the new club.

The Marquis of Anglesey was for some years Commodore, and the late Mr. Assheton Smith, of fox-hunting fame, the owner of Titania, was Vice-Commodore. The latter owner raced  Titania  against the famous  America  on August 29, 1851.  Titania  was, a year later, almost destroyed by fire at Cowes.

The rendezvous of the Royal Welsh Yacht Club was, and still is, Carnarvon, on the Menai Straits. The distinguishing flag of the club is a blue burgee and ensign, with the Prince of Wales’s plume as a device.

Are you Looking for Kosher Eatery or Jewish POI near you?

About rostov-on-don.

Rostov-on-Don is a port city and the administrative centre of Rostov Oblast and the Southern Federal District of Russia. From ancient times, the area around the mouth of the Don River has held cultural and commercial importance. Ancient indigenous inhabitants included the Scythian, Sarmat, and Savromat tribes. It was the site of Tanais, an ancient Greek colony, Fort Tana, under the Genoese and Fort Azak in the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The Best Of Rostov-on-Don

Are you a rostov-on-don kosher establishment or tour operator, jewish history, poi & kosher establishments in rostov-on-don.

Rostov is the capital of Southern Russia, with a population of close to 15,000 Jews. Prior to WWII it was a thriving hub of Jewish life. Tragically, during the war it was also the site of the worst mass execution of Jews in Russia, where over 20,000 Jews perished over the course of two horrific days. Today the community is springing back to life, with one of the most active youth groups in Russia, a Jewish day school, an overnight camp, a dynamic women's club, a busy humanitarian aid service, and new programs every year.
