The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations
There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity. While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration. Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.
The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way. The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.
Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow. The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum. Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.
Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide. What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater. You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.
With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure . I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history. It’s the ultimate interactive museum.
Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)
Kievskaya station.
Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River. Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).
Mayakovskaya Station
Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention. The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper. Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.
Novoslobodskaya Station
Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station. Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action. The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases). Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.
Komsomolskaya Station
Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur. It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city. The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life. Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.
Dostoevskaya Station
Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature . The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile. However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment. Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections. At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.
Chkalovskaya Station
Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again). Chrome borders all. Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft. There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects. Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display. By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.
Elektrozavodskaya Station
Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry. The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform. The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns. The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.
Baumanskaya Statio
Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students. Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success. Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing. At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45. Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.
Ploshchad Revolutsii Station
Novokuznetskaya Station
Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics. This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area. Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market. The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in. The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.
Here is a map and a brief description of our route:
Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya. Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya. At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north. Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center. Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii. Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Shedding Light on a Very Dark River
May 23, 2023 JPEG
If the appearance of the muddy Amazon River evokes a coffee cut with cream, the Ruki River, coursing gently through the Congo Basin, is like a dark tea . On its slow path through mostly untouched lowland rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the water leaches organic material from vegetation, prompting some researchers to think it is one of the darkest blackwater rivers on Earth. The dissolved material in this distinctive water, scientists are finding, offers clues into the carbon cycle of tropical forests.
The Ruki drains an area about the size of Senegal. Most of this watershed is covered in broadleaf and lowland swamp forests. It also contains peat bogs and only a small amount of deforested land. “The Ruki is a good candidate for being one of the most pristine and homogeneous large tropical watersheds on Earth,” the authors said in a recent study about the river. The OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8 captured this image of the Ruki River at its confluence with the Congo River, approximately 650 kilometers (400 miles) upstream (north) of DRC’s capital city Kinshasa.
For the first time, researchers have measured the chemical composition and flow of the Ruki’s dark waters. For one year, they collected water samples from a field station just upstream from the confluence and analyzed them for components such as dissolved organic carbon . Rivers are conduits of carbon to the ocean and atmosphere, especially in the tropics, so scientists are interested in knowing how much carbon they are transporting and from where.
The study reported that, as the water color suggests, the Ruki is rich in dissolved organic carbon compounds. It contains four times as much organic carbon as the Congo River and 1.5 times as much as the Rio Negro, the world’s largest blackwater river and a major tributary of the Amazon. They calculated the Ruki drains only 5 percent of the Congo Basin but contributes 20 percent of the Congo River’s total organic carbon. The Ruki watershed is very flat, such that water drains slowly and allows dead jungle vegetation plenty of time to “steep” in it, the authors said. Because of this heavy carbon load, they added , “tropical forests like those around the Ruki might not accumulate quite as much carbon as we once thought.”
The researchers also measured radiocarbon isotopes of the dissolved carbon to determine its source. The Ruki runs through areas with peat soils full of partially decomposed plant matter that could represent another source of carbon if eroded or leached into the river. Their results showed that very little carbon comes from the much older peat and that most comes from younger forest vegetation and soils. Although the peat appears stable now, they said, future drought or human disturbance in the watershed could release carbon that is now mostly locked up.

More than 100 people have been evacuated from the remote Northern Territory community of Borroloola as it faces dangerous record flooding just days after it was lashed by Tropical Cyclone Megan .
The McArthur River at the township was forecast to peak at 18 metres by Thursday afternoon, three metres higher than the previous 2001 flood record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The NT police incident controller Sonia Kennon told ABC Darwin that 102 residents were evacuated on Wednesday night. The NT police commissioner, Michael Murphy, said two residential areas in Borroloola home to 350 people, Garuwa and Yanyula, would become inundated with water as the flooding progressed.
Garawa residents were taken across Rocky Creek via boat before being evacuated to Darwin Showground in a Australian Defence Force aircraft on Wednesday.
Around midday the river at McArthur River Mine was at 17.6 metres, and the weather bureau said this was likely to pass downstream through Borroloola during Thursday afternoon and reach between 17.2 metres and 18 metres.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service assistant director, Gemma Bellenger, said evacuations would continue throughout Thursday “as a precautionary measure”.
She told Mix 104.9 those who were evacuated were “a bit worried” but “in good spirits”, with no reports of people becoming stranded or injured overnight.
Murphy said the flooding at Borraloola was “absolutely significant” and “demonstrates the change in environmental conditions we’re facing with changing conditions and increased flood levels.”
“A one-in-a-hundred-year flood is really serious [and] we’re doing everything we can to make sure the residents of Borroloola are safe,” he said.
Barkly MP Steve Edgington said several homes and communities would be inundated, according to flood modelling, but the Borroloola town centre – including the shop and school – would remain above water level.
The federal emergency management minister, Murray Watt, told the ABC on Thursday that roughly 200 people had been evacuated, with a priority on those most medically vulnerable.
Seventy-eight medically vulnerable people had been identified in the community, Murphy told reporters yesterday.

Watt said emergency officials on the ground would decide whether more evacuations were needed or if people could safely remain at Borroloola.
“We have also approved a request from the Northern Territory government to provide ADF personnel and aircraft to evacuate people from other communities such as Timber Creek, Pigeon Hole, Kalkarindji,” Watt said.
“We expect that will begin later [on Thursday] subject to weather conditions.”
Kennon said the only community currently being evacuated is Borraloola.
“Any plans for any other community to be evacuated [are] in place and ready to go [but] they are not currently required,” she said.
Edgington said flights on Wednesday had been scheduled to depart every 40 minutes until dark, carrying up to 70 people at a time.
Evacuations from Borroloola are continuing today as the latest modelling for the McArthur River now forecasts a peak of up to 18 metres on Friday morning. On Wednesday the ADF delivered four tonnes of supplies, primarily food and water, for those residents choosing to stay. A shelter capable of housing 400 people was established at a local school, in addition to another location that can house 100.
NT chief minister Eva Lawler urged people to stay safe and avoid floodwaters where possible.
Rainfall totals up to 380mm were recorded across the McArthur River catchment between Monday and Wednesday this week.
Tropical Cyclone Megan made landfall along the Gulf of Carpentaria as a category three storm on Monday afternoon, with about 700 residents in Borroloola copping the brunt of the downpour once it moved inland.
At the time, local Rebecca Whitehead said the town was “literally cut in two” with some residents forced to boat across the McArthur River to buy food.
Hopes of evacuating the town before the cyclone arrived were dashed when five Royal Australian Air Force aircraft were unable to land and residents were urged to take shelter in specific buildings capable of withstanding a category three storm.
Watt said as the ex-tropical cyclone weather system moved across the NT it was dumping huge amounts of rain on communities “which have had flooding in the last few months already”.
“So it is a dangerous situation,” he said.

The body of University of Missouri student Riley Strain, who went missing earlier this month after being kicked out of a Nashville bar on a trip with fraternity brothers, was found Friday in a river , police said.
“The body of Riley Strain was recovered from the Cumberland River in West Nashville this morning, approximately 8 miles from downtown,” the Metropolitan Nashville Police wrote on X .
No foul play is suspected, but an autopsy has been scheduled, police said.
A worker at a company located near the river clearing debris from the shoreline discovered a body floating in the water near 61st Avenue North around 7:30 a.m. and notified authorities.
The fire department worked quickly to remove the body from the water before cops confirmed it was the 22-year-old a few hours later.
Police Chief John Drake told reporters Strain had been wearing the same shirt, watch and “other identifying items” that initially led investigators to believe they had found the missing student.
His body was found exactly two weeks after he was last seen.
Strain was visiting the Music City with his Delta Chi fraternity brothers when he vanished after leaving country star Luke Bryan’s honky-tonk bar, Luke’s 32 Bridge, on March 8.
Over the next two weeks, authorities followed a breadcrumb trail of phone pings and grainy surveillance footage, even finding a bank card in his name on the shore of the river earlier this week.
The 6-foot-7 finance major purchased one alcoholic drink and two drinks of water during his visit to the watering hole, according to TC Restaurant Group — the operator and owner of Luke’s 32 Bridge.
The bar shared that security decided to boot Strain from the nightspot based on their “conduct standards” due to Strain’s behavior, escorting him from the venue through the Broadway exit at the front of the building at 9:35 p.m.
“He was followed down the stairs with one member of his party. The individual with Riley did not exit and returned upstairs.”
Strain told his friends he would meet them at their room at the Tempo by Hilton, about five blocks from the bar.
But Strain never returned.
He was seemingly captured on surveillance footage crossing Gay Street around 9:47 p.m. after leaving the bar — about a 17-minute walk from Luke’s 32 Bridge and in the opposite direction of the hotel, according to Nashville police .
He was then spotted on Nashville Police Officer Reginald Young’s bodycam while he walked down Gay Street, the department posted on X.
Young, who was in the area investigating a reported vehicle burglary, briefly interacted with Strain, asking him how he was doing, to which the Missouri senior replied: “Good.”
Strain did not appear to be in any distress during their short interaction.
A local homeless man claimed he saw a “very, very intoxicated” Strain almost fall over the edge of a trail into the Cumberland River.
Police say Strain was spotted one final time on Gay Street at 9:52 p.m. but shared that “No video has been discovered that shows Riley away from Gay St. after the 9:52 p.m. timeframe.”
Strain wasn’t reported as missing until about four hours after he was escorted out of Luke’s 32 Bridge, at 1:35 a.m., when a friend returned to their hotel to find him not in the room.
What to know about the mysterious disappearance of Riley Strain
- College student Riley Strain, 22, went missing after being kicked out of Luke’s 32 Bridge Food + Drink in Nashville on March 8, 2024. Strain told his University of Missouri fraternity brothers that he was going back to his hotel room, but never arrived or contacted his friends.
- Surveillance footage shows him walking toward the hotel before making a wrong turn. His cellphone last pinged about a mile from the bar.
- According to the Luke Bryan-owned bar, Strain only purchased one alcoholic drink and two waters the night he went missing. The 22-year-old’s parents have claimed he was “overserved.”
- The student’s bank card was found days later on an embankment of the Cumberland River by two TikTokkers searching the area.
- A local homeless man allegedly saw a “very, very intoxicated” Strain almost fall over the edge of a trail into the river. Strain was also spotted by a police officer near the river, according to body camera footage.
- The college senior sent the bizarre text message “Good lops” to a love interest before vanishing, according to a family friend.
His phone last pinged between 10 and 10:30 p.m. in the area of Public Square Park, located near the sheriff’s office and the Cumberland River.
A girl Strain had been romantically involved with said she texted him on the night of his disappearance “to see how he was doing” on the trip.
His Delta Chi fraternity brother Chris Dingman said the girl received a bizarre “scripted text” from Strain saying “Good lops.”
Dingman said the girl had trouble understanding what the text meant and resorted to Googling its meaning.
Strain’s fraternity brother noted that the text highlighted his friend’s mental state that night.
On March 17, police found Strain’s bank card on the embankment of the river, but the card had not been used since he went missing.
As the search intensified, the United Cajun Navy — a nonprofit that helps organize search and rescues during natural disasters — joined in the efforts.
After Strain’s body was discovered, the group stood down in their search, later taking to Facebook to thank those who had lent a hand.
“We regret that the search for Riley Strain didn’t end joyfully, but oftentimes the closure outweighs the unknown,” the group’s statement reads in part .
“Riley’s family gets a chance to bring him home and say goodbye in their own way.”
The United Cajun Navy did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
In a statement provided to The Post Friday, Delta Chi Fraternity spoke glowingly of their departed brother.
“The Delta Chi Fraternity is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our esteemed fraternity brother, Riley Strain,” it wrote.
“Our hearts go out to Riley’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time as we work to provide support and resources to all those affected by this tragedy.”
Strain’s stepfather, Chris Whiteid, and his mother, Michelle Whiteid, who earlier this week tearfully told reporters she was holding out hope her son would be found alive, could not be reached for comment Friday.

Riley Strain: Body of missing student found in Nashville's Cumberland River
T he body of Riley Strain — the University of Missouri student who disappeared after a night out with fraternity brothers at a Nashville bar earlier this month — has been found, police said.
His body was found in the Cumberland River on Friday morning, “approximately 8 miles from downtown. No foul play-related trauma was observed. An autopsy is pending,” Metro Nashville police wrote on X.
Strain, a 22-year-old finance student who was set to graduate in May, had been drinking with friends at Luke’s 32 Bridge Food + Drink when he was kicked out for violating the bar’s “conduct standards” on March 8. The bar is owned by country music singer Luke Bryan and is located on Broadway, a downtown strip that’s popular among tourists.
In the days after his disappearance, police, the United Cajun Navy — a nonprofit search-and-rescue organization — and TikTokers had been searching for Strain.
What happened the night Strain disappeared
After leaving Luke’s 32 Bridge, Strain reportedly told his friends that he would walk the five blocks to their hotel, Tempo by Hilton. But he never made it back to the hotel, his friends said. Later that night, Strain’s cousin, Chelsea Strain, told Fox News Digital that those friends filed a missing persons report.
The bar said they provided police with camera footage, time-stamped photos of Strain there, staff accounts and transaction records. Here’s a timeline of the night (all times are local time).
7:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
During a FaceTime call with his mother, Michelle, Strain says that he had already been to several bars that night before going to Luke’s 32, according to stepdad Chris Whiteid.
Strain is escorted out of Luke’s 32 Bridge after buying one alcoholic drink and two waters.
“Our security team made a decision based on our conduct standards to escort him from the venue through our Broadway exit at the front of our building,” the bar said in a statement . “He was followed down the stairs with one member of his party. The individual with Riley did not exit and returned upstairs."
A camera captures Strain walking across Gay Street with a crowd of people.
“Riley appears to be in a very good mood in the video, joking with fellow pedestrians. Riley is taking visibly large steps,” organizers of a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of Strain’s dad, Robert Gilbert, said of the security footage.
The GoFundMe added that at the end of the video, Strain is seen “sort of spinning around and stumbling” before turning back around to follow a woman wearing a cowboy hat and another person walking.
This was the time Strain was last seen on Gay Street, according to Metro Nashville police.
10 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
Strain’s phone last pinged near Public Square Park, located near the sheriff’s office and the Cumberland River, according to a Fox’s Nashville affiliate .
Family friend Chris Dingman told NewsNation that Strain’s last communication was a text message to a girl.
“She texted him to see how he was doing, if he was having fun. He sent kind of a scripted text back to her saying ‘Good lops,'” Dingman said.
Strain’s mother and stepfather have not been able to confirm who the girl was or if she was the last person he talked to. Dingman said it’s also unclear if the text message was a typo or slang.
"We know that Riley was possibly communicating with multiple people," he said.
On Monday, Nashville police released bodycam footage of Strain to quiet the rumors that he was being chased. In the video, he briefly exchanged greetings with a cop on Gay Street just before he disappeared. Strain, who was walking by himself, “did not appear distressed,” police said .
The search for Strain
Nashville police said at a March 14 press conference that there were no signs of foul play.
On X, the department shared a video that shows a police helicopter flying over Cumberland River to search the area. Detectives were also on the ground searching for evidence of Strain’s disappearance.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Strain's parents requested more resources to help find their son to “bring some more clues to light.”
The United Cajun Navy — which was established to help with the Hurricane Katrina disaster response — announced on Tuesday that they were helping search for Strain and would use a hovercraft and a pilot to look along the Cumberland River.
On Sunday, two TikTokers who joined the search were livestreaming their hunt for evidence near the Cumberland River. While they were walking, they stumbled upon his credit card which was peeking out under leaves on the river’s embankment, Fox News Digital reported.
Dingman told the outlet that the TikTokers, described as “young ladies,” reached out to Strain’s family after they found the credit card. Dingman added that even though the family was glad to have a lead, the discovery had left them with "a thousand more questions than answers."
Strain’s family is ‘struggling’
Strain’s family had expressed their frustration with the investigation, saying that it was riddled with “lots of confusion.”
“We’ve heard multiple people that have tried to call Crime Stoppers and leave tips and told they don’t know anything about a Riley Strain case,” Whiteid told NewsNation . “So, lots of confusion. We’re struggling. ... It’s disheartening.”
Whiteid had also told NBC News that earlier in the night, Strain told his parents that he had already been to several bars before going to Luke’s 32, but noted he didn’t sound like “he had been drinking a lot." He said that Strain continued to text his mom — whom he talked to “multiple times a day” — for some time after the call ended.
Whiteid said that several people shared "horror stories" with him after Strain went missing claiming they were allegedly drugged while out at Nashville bars.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Riley Strain, a University of Missouri student who went missing in Tennessee’s capital for nearly two weeks, has been found dead in a river, police announced Friday. No foul play is suspected, investigators said.
Metro Nashville police officials confirmed that Strain’s body had been recovered from the Cumberland River about 8 miles (12.8 kilometers) west of downtown at around 7:30 a.m.
Police Chief John Drake told reporters that workers on the river initially found Strain’s body and alerted authorities. Medical examiners later confirmed it was Strain, he said. Police department spokesperson Don Aaron said an autopsy will be conducted Saturday.
“We have reports that normally under these circumstances ... with his height and weight, he could have surfaced between 14 and 20 days,” Drake said. “This is the 14th day. So we were really expecting to find him.”
Police previously said Strain, 22, was last seen just before 10 p.m. on March 8 after drinking downtown. A massive search was quickly launched, with just small clues available to help investigators trying to find him, including finding his bank card along a riverbank and using surveillance footage to track his final moments.
University of Missouri officials said in a statement that Strain was traveling to Nashville to attend a private event.

Members of Strain’s family offered their thanks for everyone’s help and support during remarks to reporters Friday in Nashville.
“I just ask that you mommas out there, hug your babies tight tonight please,” his mother, Michelle Whiteid, said through tears. “Please, for me, just hug your babies tight tonight. And again, thank you. Thank you for sharing our story.”
Drake said that his “heart and prayers” were going to Strain’s family “for this very unfortunate and tragic accident.”

Body of Riley Strain pulled from Cumberland River, 8 miles from downtown Nashville
by Jordan Whittington, Sydney Keller
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The body of missing college student Riley Strain was pulled from the Cumberland River on Friday morning, Metro Police confirm.
Strain's body was recovered near 61st Avenue North in West Nashville, about 8 miles from downtown. Metro Police Chief John Drake said the department received a call from an employee who works along the river around 7:30 a.m. Friday. The worker was removing an object from the water when a body surfaced.
The Medical Examiner's office confirmed the identification. Strain's body still had the same black and brown shirt he was wearing the night he disappeared, along with his watch.
Police say there is no foul play-related trauma and an autopsy is pending. It will be conducted on Saturday, but completion could take weeks or months, Metro Police says. The family was notified of Strain's death Friday morning.
“My heart and prayers go out to you all for this very unfortunate and tragic incident,” Metro Police's Chief John Drake said during the news conference.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell took to X after the news broke. He says the city will work to improve safety "in a variety of ways."
"I met with Riley’s family earlier this week, and as devastating as I find this news, I can’t imagine their heartbreak," the mayor wrote. "We will continue to work toward improvements in safety in a variety of ways."
Strain went missing on Friday, March 8 after being asked to leave Luke Bryan's bar on lower Broadway. The 22-year-old University of Missouri senior got separated from his friends when he was asked to leave the bar for intoxication. He told his friends he would meet them back at the hotel, but instead started walking in the opposite direction.
Surveillance video from the night he disappeared shows him running, crashing into a pole off and hitting his head in a Church Street parking lot.
Bodycam video from Metro Police also shows a brief encounter with an officer on Gay Street the night he disappeared.
Strain’s family said his phone last pinged near Public Square Park, at 9:58 p.m. Video showed Strain near the James Robertson Parkway bridge, but the trail ended there.
Chief Drake said because of Strain's height and weight, his body would surface between 14 and 20 days. The chief added since Friday marked two weeks since his disappearance, search teams were planning to go out on boats that morning.
Strain's bank card was recovered near the Cumberland River on Sunday, March 17. It was the first major clue in his disappearance.
