Debating between a two-hour hire or a full-day trip along the Hudson? Choose a boat to start your adventures around NYC
Courtesy: Sailo
Finding a boat rental may not be the first thing on your mind when planning your next trip to NYC. However, some would argue (us included) that one of the best ways to see the city at its best is on the water. From two-hour bareboat hires (yes, you’ll be the skipper) or a boat tour to full-day events fit for up to 600 people on a super yacht, there is a wide choice of boat rental options in New York City for you to choose from And we’re here to walk you through them and help you find the right one for you—and your socials, of course. Let’s get into it.
Before sailing into our list of the best boat rentals in NYC, we’ve got to keep you in the know-how for renting boats. It may sound super simple, but there are certainly a few things you should know before booking your dream yacht. Thanks to us (no shame), we’ve put in the research so you don't have to. Take a look and get ready for one of the best things to do in NYC .
RECOMMENDED: The best tours and walks in NYC
Renting a boat in NYC can be a surprisingly cheap thing to do, especially when split between your pals or family members. Most of the offerings are centered around quarter- and half-day rentals, while the mega-party yachts occasionally deliver a full-day experience. Prices for quarter-day boat rentals begin around $500, while larger boats and half-day rentals can get into the lower thousands. With that in mind, we’d suggest finalizing your guestlist and budget before putting down a deposit. It's smarter in the long run, promise.
Chartering a private yacht in NYC varies from other parts of the country where you’ll often hear of $100,000 charters as standard procedure. Thankfully, in New York City, things are a little different. Full-day charters can range from $5,000 to $60,000 – although the higher price points typically cater to large groups of 300 guests plus. it's best to decide beforehand what kind of party you’re throwing and how many guests you’d like to accommodate to ensure you get the best deal.
To rent a boat in NYC, you’ll need to be over 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have a credit card (in most cases). In some circumstances, you’ll also need a Boating Safety Certificate, but it’s best to check in with your boat rental company in advance to find out exactly what they need from you. Alternatively, you won’t need any sailing qualifications if you charter a private yacht as the captain will be in charge – just have the cash ready.
No, a crew doesn’t come with a boat rental in NYC. If a boat is offered bareboat, this means that you’ll be the skipper for the duration of the trip and there will be no captain onboard. However, if you charter a private yacht, more often than not, there will be a crew onboard to heighten your experience. You will need to verify this in your package offering.
Most boat rentals in NYC are typically quarter-day or half-day trips centered around the Hudson River and offer up a unique perspective of New York City. There’s also a large variety of boats available, ranging from speedy motorboats to soaring sailboats. A few boat rentals in NYC offer the bareboat option, while the majority will have a captain available to sail you around the Big Apple's coastline so you sit back, relax on charter and enjoy that glass of bubbly in peace.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
1. the azimut express cruiser.
This 70ft luxury Italian yacht is one of the most incredible (and well-priced) super yachts in New York that we've ever seen. Catering to 12 guests with three bedrooms and three bathrooms a piece, this Azimut Express Cruiser is a brilliant yacht to charter for a group of friends or a large family looking for a memorable experience. Sail away, friends.
There's nothing quite like hiring a private sailboat from Brooklyn Bridge Park and gliding across the Hudson River. Pack your own picnic beforehand and spend an afternoon soaking up the NYC sun while your captain takes you for a spin on this gorgeous Catalina. Yes, this one comes with a captain included.
This luxury woman-owned motorboat in New York City is designed with a group of friends in mind. With plenty of seating for up to 12 guests, an onboard bathroom, a fantastic sound system, and coolers for all your spritzers, this is the ideal boat for a day out with the pals. What’s that? Oh nothing, we just see a bachelorette party on the horizon.
If you’re searching for iconic, you've just found it. This US Lightship comes from the '50s before she was decommissioned in 1985. A unique charter offering, she caters to over 100 guests and is one of the few full-day event options aboard a ship in NYC. And if not for anything else, she's pretty Instagrammable.
Some might just say that Atlantis is the go-to New York party yacht. With a capacity for 300 guests and 147ft of event space, this private charter yacht will be the party that's talked about for decades afterward. Whether it's corporate dinners, birthday parties, or a full-blown wedding, Atlantis and her crew will cater to yours – and your event's – every need.
This one-of-a-kind boat rental in NYC offers guests a private fishing charter experience. Bask in the ambiance of Long Island's coastline while Captain Arthur shows you how to perfect your tackle – pun not intended. Simply cast your line and see what comes of it. Ay-ay, captain.
Hop aboard this 200ft European-style party boat originally from the naughty ‘90s. Catering for 300, this cruise provides guests with epic views of the Manhattan coastline (and skyline) through its revolutionary glass windows. Hear that? Yep, it’s popping-bottle time. Grab your bestie and get dancing.
Cruise through New York City's harbor on the stunning Beneteau Sloop sailboat, courtesy of the captain. There’s a large table onboard ideal for food and drinks served by the professional and friendly crew. Ideal, right? Just don't forget to wave to the Statue of Liberty as the USA flag billows in the wind beside her.
This comfy pontoon is ideal fun for all the family. It's easy to drive (that's one for you, cap) and has a built-in GPS and Bluetooth radio. The finishes are super modern and with adjustable roofing, you’ll have prime viewing of New York City all around. Please note that you must be at least 25 years of age to hire this boat.
Perhaps the largest NYC party yacht rental we’ve seen, this party cruise is a step back into the early 2000s – but with an interactive DJ from 2023, thank goodness. Or not? Either way, marvel at the breathtaking views of New York while you sip on something cold included in the food and drinks package. Don’t you just love a win-win? We certainly do.

I have attended several events on the Yacht Justine. The plush furnishings and careful interior layout produce an atmosphere that is both elegant and intimate. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. A truly memorable way to experience the New York harbor.
We spent the first night of our honeymoon on Yacht Justine. It was the ten year anniversary of 9/11, and the tour around lower Manhattan was sobering and reflective, but also heart-stoppingly beautiful. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our country and one of its greatest cities, and made the first day of our marriage magic and memorable. The accommodations were also very chic and comfortable, preparing us for the five-star resorts we had booked for the rest of our honeymoon. On top of spending the night in luxurious accommodations, we got a kick out of the novelty of knowing we were on a boat. All in all, it was a cherished experience, and one we would recommend to anyone looking for a truly special night.
Justine is beautiful, outside and in; and her crew is tremendous. I have been on many leisure trips on New York waterways on all types of boats from rustic sailboats to cruise ships, and can say that the aesthetic and ethos of one's immediate surroundings greatly impacts the experience. The elegant look of Justine, and the friendly unpretentious feel of her crew has been the number one factor in my enjoyment.
I had the great pleasure of coming aboard Yacht Justine for a cruise on NYE. Justine is a beautiful vessel and the staff was extremely accommodating and nice. I was very impressed by how attentive the staff was and all their efforts to make sure that I enjoyed my time aboard Justine. I will definitely book another cruise in the near future. If you are looking for a classy retreat from the city in the company of an incredible staff, this is where you want to be.
YACHT CHARTERS
Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.
All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.
It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.
We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.
Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.
Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.
We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.
No, but cell phones and streaming data will work throughout all of our routes.
Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.
We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.
Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.
Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.
All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.
If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.
Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.
We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.
Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.
Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.
Thank you but pass.
New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.
We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.
We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.
You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.
Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.
No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.
New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

NEW YORK -- President Joe Biden's new plan to cap rents and build housing drew mixed reactions in New York.
The White House unveiled the housing plan Tuesday.
The plan calls for building 200,000 new homes and providing $10,000 in mortgage relief. It would also cap rent increases at 5% for landlords with more than 50 units, and landlords who raise rents more than that would lose tax breaks.
The plan was praised by New York tenants.
"President Biden is right: rent caps ensure families can set roots in their communities and stay for the long term," said Cea Weaver, the director of the Housing Justice for All Coalition.
But the Rent Stabilization Association, a group of 25,000 landlords in the metropolitan area, turned thumbs down.
"Seventy-five years of trying to cap rents in New York City has not made New York City more affordable. It's been a disaster for taxpayers. It hasn't created the new housing," said Frank Ricci, the association's executive vice president.
"It doesn't make an a economic sense to me, personally. There's no incentive to build more housing, no incentive to improve housing. It'd destroy the market," one New Yorker said.
"I think it's excellent. It's for the common man. At this point in time, everybody's struggling," another New Yorker said.
The plan was part of a two-pronged attempt by Democrats to grab voters' attention, in addition to sending members of the Democratic National Committee to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention .
New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker was one of a number of Democratic Party officials and labor leaders who traveled to the RNC and Milwaukee to warn people about Project 2025 , a plan put together by some Republicans to cut Medicare and Medicaid, cut social security and limit abortion.
"This is a stark choice, folks. It's between having health care and not. Between having reproductive rights and not. Between having affordable prescription drugs and not. Between having retirement security and not," Booker said.
New York State Republican Chairman Ed Cox dismissed their concerns.
"President Trump has made it clear from the start of his campaign ... he's not about to change the basic rules about Medicare and social security," Cox said.
The theme of the RNC Tuesday is "making America safe again." It will focus on crime and border security. Trump wants to close the border and deport immigrants.

A proposal to make landlords’ tax breaks contingent on rent limits has drawn industry pushback, progressive applause and some alternative approaches.
By Talmon Joseph Smith
When the Biden administration laid out a suite of plans this week to address housing affordability, it added a bold update to previous proposals — and sent the housing industry and the economics world buzzing.
The White House called on Congress to pass legislation giving “corporate landlords” — defined by the White House as those with over 50 rental units — a choice to cap annual rent increases on existing units at 5 percent annually or lose federal tax breaks based on property depreciation.
The proposal is expected to go largely unaddressed this year, with Congress in campaign mode. But public reaction has been lively.
Tenant organizations and progressive leaders generally allied with the administration’s economic team cheered the news. Yet a range of economists, Wall Street analysts, real estate groups and landlord associations responded with forceful critiques, assailing the limits as counterproductive.
“Increasing the supply of affordable rental housing nationwide — not politically motivated and self-defeating rent control proposals floated during election campaigns — is the best way to alleviate affordability constraints for renters,” Robert D. Broeksmit, the president of Mortgage Bankers Association, said in a statement.
The policy would affect about 20 million units in the country, roughly half of all rental properties.
Senior administration officials responding to questions about unintended consequences — like disincentives to build housing — noted that in addition to exemptions for new construction, the proposed caps would be in place for only two years. That, they argue, would aid tenants until more units are built.
The administration initiative comes as surveys indicate growing public concern about the cost and availability of housing for renters and first-time buyers.
Rents have surged 26 percent nationally since early 2020, according to a recent report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. That increase has exceeded overall inflation. In 2022, a Harvard report found that 50 percent of all U.S. tenants, a record high, were “cost burdened,” spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent.
The White House has undertaken previous efforts to increase housing supply. In 2022, the Transportation Department set up grant programs worth about $6 billion designed to award more dollars to jurisdictions that have deregulated zoning and land-use policies to allow more housing.
President Biden’s 2023 fiscal year budget proposal called for two million new units with the same logic: States and localities that reduce constraints to building more housing would receive tens of billions of extra federal funding for development in return.
And the administration backed bipartisan legislation this year to expand the largest federal subsidy program for developers of affordable housing, the low-income housing tax credit. The bill was approved by the House but did not come to a vote in the Senate.
But for economists dedicated to a tight focus on relieving shortages of shelter, government caps on rent is taboo.
Economists of various ideological leanings cite years of research showing that aggressive rent control policies have often backfired, protecting renters from being displaced but failing to reduce overall prices in many cases for new tenants.
Jay Parsons, a housing economist at Madera Residential, a property investment company, called the White House’s rent cap exemptions for new housing development “an empty promise.” He specifically warned, “Look at New York, where rent control has been revised to ‘recapture’ units previously exempt from rent controls.”
(New York is contending with a particularly dire housing shortage, though some researchers also put a hefty amount of blame on restrictive local permitting processes.)
There is an industrywide fear that limited rent stabilization rules, once enacted, inevitably expand to cover more units, hampering profits and limiting construction.
At the same time, some economists and developers contend that there is plenty of room for nuance in the matter — with the policy details of tenant protections, including their degrees of magnitude, mattering the most.
“Everyone on all sides is getting too worked up with their blinders on,” said Paul Williams, the executive director of the Center for Public Enterprise, a think tank focused on increasing the public sector’s capacity to fund and build infrastructure. “No one wants to strike a balance.”
Moses Kagan, a co-founder and partner at Adaptive Realty, a multifamily development and property management firm in Los Angeles, argued that “most deals in most markets will look pretty good” for large landlords like his firm, even with a brake of 5 percent on annual rent growth.
Many real estate investors put their money in projects that are expected to be profitable with annual rent growth assumptions below that rate.
Nevertheless, some economists sympathetic to using government carrots and sticks to limit price gouging, such as Christopher Clarke, an assistant professor of economics at Washington State University, have made the case that 5 percent per year may still be too low a ceiling for rent growth.
The most vigorous support for the White House’s rent cap plan has come from liberal organizations focused on economic justice issues.
Rakeen Mabud, the chief economist at Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive advocacy group, said it “simultaneously checks the exploitative behavior of corporate landlords, stems the upward pressure that housing puts on overall inflation, and most importantly, helps address the skyrocketing cost of housing for families around the country.”
Many in housing development research hope that this latest debate will lead to bipartisan conversations in Congress next year about ways to encourage, subsidize or directly finance more housing.
“The piece of the puzzle that has yet to be addressed is financing constraints,” Mr. Williams of the Center for Public Enterprise said.
A report by the center detailed how “a national housing construction fund” could help solve the housing crisis for renters overall and for prospective first-time home buyers, who have been hurt by the scarce sales inventory.
The fund would create a national market for construction financing loans indirectly backed by the federal government’s buying power. The key idea is that federal backing would provide safety for investors and lower the cost of credit, as it does in the residential mortgage market.
That security, Mr. Williams and his co-author Yakov Feygin say, would allow the math to add up for lenders providing financing for housing development — whether they are banks or state housing agencies. The end goal is that funding would flow much more freely, even in uncertain economic cycles.
It is the sort of market-oriented policy intended to win over people like Jonathan Woloshin, a strategist at the bank UBS who tracks large firms in the U.S. real estate and lodging sector. He panned the White House proposal on rent caps in a note as soon as it was released.
“If the economics of building additional shelter are artificially capped and not reflective of the economics and risks of development,” Mr. Woloshin said, “then developer capital will go elsewhere.”
