NEWS and Full Review: The Market at Ale & Compass in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

We’re coming to you today from The Market at Ale & Compass !

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, “Great! But where’s Ale & Compass?” The Market at Ale & Compass is located in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. You may already be familiar with Ale & Compass Lounge , which sits near the Captain’s Grille (which is currently closed for refurbishment — guests can enjoy Captain’s Grille dishes at its temporary location in Ariel’s ).

The Market at Ale & Compass, however, is located right by the Fittings & Fairings gift shop (which is… umm, also closed for refurbishment 😉 , with a reopening planned for July. Change is the name of the game ‘round these parts!).

With the exception of the Yacht & Beach Club’s pool bar, Hurricane Hanna’s , the Yacht Club has been without a Counter Service option, with guests relying on nearby choices at the neighboring BoardWalk Inn and Beach Club.

The Market at Ale & Compass has been established in half of what was the Fittings & Fairings gift shop (the other portion of the space will once again operate as a merchandise spot once it reopens in July).

One of the reasons the Yacht Club greatly needed a Counter Service option is that it is a Convention Resort as well as a Disney World guest resort. We’re talking lots of folks in and out on the way to conferences and meetings in need of a place to grab a quick bite without hiking over to the Beach Club Marketplace or Boardwalk Bakery .

Market Hours

For that reason, the setting is very much function over form, with the food options front and center in a fairly simplistic, minimalist setting, with wooden tables and baskets providing a few rustic touches, a la an outdoor marketplace.

Though the emphasis is on allowing guests to get in and get on their way, there is also a section of tables and chairs. All pretty basic. (Note that there is currently no outdoor seating.)

In many ways, it’s the food itself that provides most of the “decor.”

So let’s take a look at those options next.

With an apparent focus on the convention crowd, the food at The Market is primarily grab-and-go style eats.

That said, you will also encounter a menu with hot offerings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Specialty coffee is at the ready for guests in need of a caffeine fix.

Now, for a closer look. In all areas from the pre-packaged grab-and-go to the cold refrigerated selections and so on, you’ll notice some differences compared to what we’ve found in the past at Disney food courts. Even though The Market carries standard choices such as Lay’s brand chips, granola bars, and cereals, you’ll also spy lots of higher-end brands among them.

Take, for instance, the pre-packaged choices, which include Epic Salmon Bites, The New Primal Jerky, and Smash Mallow Snackable Marshmallows.

Bagged and boxed items include Carrot-Zucchini Bites, Gruyere Choux, Lemon Macarons, and even chocolates from The Ganachery .

The trend continues with chilled choices, with hummus, tabouleh, and shrimp cocktail among the salads and cold sandwiches.

Even the frozen novelties have a unique addition.

As far as we know, The Market is one of the only places selling Halo Top on property at the moment.

Hot options are available for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner.

The hot counters are kept fully stocked for high traffic hours. If they are on the empty side when you arrive, you can visit the coffee counter to place a hot sandwich order during less busy times.

Drinks include basic bottled beverages (with a few not-so-basic, like Orgain Protein Shakes), wine, and beer.

Coke Freestyle customizable drinks are also an option. By the way, did you know you can mix your drink flavors, even with the whole Rapid Fill refillable resort mug and cup situation?

Just fill your cup halfway with whatever flavor option you select, then press the “back arrow” to the upper left of the screen, and select your next choice to fill the rest.

Whew!  So, that’s the setup! I ended up trying a couple of sandwiches, pastries, and a few “somethings sweet” from the desserts.

First things first: when you have you ever known me to resist a Cinnamon Roll ?

The Market’s version is just your basic, other than that it’s quite light and flaky; not dense at all. And this one was notably fresh.

I was also intrigued by the Banana Bread with Chocolate Chips from the bakery case.

As it turns out, the chocolate provided nearly all the flavor, as the banana bread itself was pretty bland.

Cast Members shared that the Ham and Cheddar Cheese served on a Pretzel Roll has been the most popular of the hot sandwiches.

I assume that’s because of said pretzel roll, which is always a draw, but honestly there’s nothing remarkable about this one.

I much preferred the other hot sandwich I ordered: the Spicy Italian Panini , which is capicola (smoked pork shoulder), mortadella (an Italian lunch meat), ham, provolone cheese, and giardinere (a vegetable and herb blend) served on a baguette.

Two things stand out with this sandwich: first, this thing is PACKED with flavor from the interesting combination of meats.

Second, this sandwich IS, indeed, spicy, thanks to the giardinere (which typically includes serrano peppers in the mix).

Even though The Market is not meant to be destination dining, I would come back specifically for this sandwich. So that’s saying something.

Since they went beyond your typical cupcakes and ramekin offerings, I decided to try three of the desserts.

The Chocolate Coffee Mousse a bit of a nice surprise. I’m not a chocoholic, really, but this rich mousse with its punch of mocha flavor was much better than I expected.

While I wasn’t particularly wowed by any of the desserts, as far as chocolate dome options in Disney World go, this was the best one I’d tried. (Though it still wouldn’t be on my must-eat list._

The Apple Mousse is definitely cute and eye-catching.

It’s an apple mousse covered in a thick glaze, served on top of a bit of apple compote above the crust.

Its looks are the most memorable thing about it, though, and there’s no reason to go for it over the chocolate.

My final dessert was the Lemon Cheesecake , which is topped with a blackberry mousse and a blackberry foam with a gritty texture that I didn’t particularly care for.

The base is simply your typical lemon cheesecake that you’ll see in other spots around property. Decent flavor, but nothing special. Additionally, it’s really small for what you pay for. Pass.

Still, the dessert options at least differed from what I anticipated, as did many of the selections packed into the space. I’ll be curious to see how the choices go over with the resort’s guests, and we’ll be keeping an eye out to see if any changes take place to the offerings in the future.

The Market at Ale and Compass is what it is. Like I said, it’s not destination dining. In all fairness, though, it’s not intended to be. It’s a simple convenience for guests at the resort, and a solid option primarily focused on serving convention traffic. This is why it was interesting to spot some fairly unique choices and decent variety in what otherwise is a mostly an amped up grab-and-go. In that sense, it reminds me a lot of Cafe Rix in Coronado Springs Resort — another resort that hosts lots of convention guests. The Market and Cafe Rix both fulfill a basic role of providing easy access meals, but in both cases you can also find at least one or two items that are somewhat unique and above par. And since it’s high time that the Yacht Club had a Counter Service option of its own, we’re glad to say “Welcome” to The Market at Ale & Compass.

Eat Here If:

• You’re staying at the Yacht Club or Beach Club
• You’re in a hurry and need a hot sandwich or a pastry
• You love a good Italian pressed sandwich
• You really need Halo Top

Don’t Eat Here If:

• You’re staying anywhere else on property
• You’re looking for very kid-friendly food
• You want atmosphere/ambiance, or you’re looking to make memories with your food choices during this meal

They didn’t rip out the gift shop for this. It doesn’t sound like they took out anything. It’s near the gift shop, which is closed for refurb, and the Ale & Compass lounge.

Lynne, I echo your thoughts 100%. I showed the photos to my wife yesterday and we just shook our heads. I’m holding out hope that the “rehab” isn’t complete and there will yet be a shop that houses the very nice brands that once filled Fittings and Fairings. Not to mention Ale & Compass. I did so enjoy that little bar area. Whether to have a cocktail, or just relax. Frank

Meg, I was there last month. The gift shop, at that time was in the lobby, in the spot where they put the Christmas train display. They didn’t have much. Definitely didn’t have any Tommy Bahama or Vineyard Vine lines. Also at that time, the entire Fittings & Fairings was shutdown for this rehab. They had to take something out to put this in. Frank

Frank, could you tell if this took up the ENTIRE gift shop? I know the area where the ladies fine clothing once was, is now table and chairs. But I had trouble deciding if the rehab went all the way back to mens wear and fitting room. Thanks. Lynne

Lynne, I don’t know. I’m going back for a few days in early June… but until then I won’t have the information. Hopefully, someone reading who can get over there will fill us in. When I spoke to the CM at the “lobby gift shop” they “sounded” like they would be bringing back the clothes but I’m not sure. One has to wonder if they aren’t trying to get it all to the Springs. Can’t imagine though they’d mess w the shops in the Grand Floridian. I REALLY hope they don’t ruin Ale & Compass, or if they do, they staff Martha’s Vineyard better. I’ve had a tough time getting served there. I even go up to the bar and wait for my order and take it back to my table. Ahh, for the old days at Riptide in the Beach Club or Crew’s Cup. Almost an entirely new Crew there. Frank

Thanks Frank, I appreciate the reply. We’ve always been happy at the Crew’s Cup, with Martha’s running a very close second. Now, my biggest fear is what will be happening to the Captains Grill or “The Galley” to me. I’m afraid it will turn out looking like our local “Culvers”.

Lynne and Frank — I wouldn’t get too worried. They seem to have expanded the Fittings and Fairings space altogether, so the space dedicated to merchandise will be the same size as it always was — or larger. And it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if all of the same brands and merch came back. No reason to be concerned yet.

Nice that they added a QS, but I am not getting a vibe from this place at all that it is in or near a Yacht Club themed resort. It looks like a generic cafeteria like the one at my work. I hope this is not a recurring thing, this is the 2nd or 3rd food rehab on property to be done “minimalist”, or stripped of the theme.

Lynne, I think there is only one hold over left from a longstanding crew there. Everyone else is new. As for Martha’s Vineyard, every time we go there, we never get waited on. I started going to the bar as I mentioned, but it gets old. Great venue though. Haven’t eaten at the Captain’s Grill in ages, but I may want to go to Ariel’s just for old times sake. Loved it as a seafood restaurant in the day.

AJ, Hope you are right. Thought has crossed my mind that Disney wants everything higher ticket downtown. Seems you get an Annual Pass discount if you buy Tommy at a resort, but not at Downtown, er Disney Springs. Frank

We were at the Boardwalk Inn last month. My wife made the comment that our room wasn’t as “Disney” as she remembered it in past years. We are staying at the Beach Club in an upcoming trip. It will be interesting to see what that looks like. And why no clock in the room at the Boardwalk??? I had to call the Boardwalk Guest Services to request a clock. They said they aren’t “standard” anymore????? Frank

Of course, the Disney Parks have plenty of gift shops to browse. But often, it’s simple to pick up an item at your resort. I don’t know about you, but I almost always want a piece of resort-branded merchandise to show off where I stayed. Most resort gift shops offer items like magnets, beach towels, robes, and apparel with the resort’s logo.

Over the last year, we’ve visited all of Walt Disney World’s resort gift shops. Below, you’ll find a list of each one. Best Resort Gift Shops at Disney World

While we love all the gift shops at the resorts, a few stand out a little more than others. Below, we’ve ranked our five favorite resort gift shops at Disney World. If you’re looking for something special, these are some of the best shops to browse during your vacation!

#5 La Boutique at Disney’s Riviera

Everything at Disney’s Riviera Resort has a boutique feel, so it’s appropriate that the gift shop’s name is La Boutique. While this shop is super tiny, it packs a punch when it comes to merchandise. If you’re not staying at Disney’s Riviera, you might enjoy visiting the resort via the Skyliner. You can stop in for a meal and some shopping while you’re there.

La Boutique is located on the resort’s second floor, off the main lobby. Don’t miss the Riveria-specific merchandise at this shop. If only every resort modeled this one!

Tip: Since Disney’s Riviera is a DVC (Disney Vacation Club) Resort, you’ll usually find an entire section of DVC merchandise. So, DVC members, this is a perfect shop for you!

#4 Panchito’s at Coronado Springs

Panchito’s used to be one of the most fun gift shops at Disney World. Unfortunately, most of the props that made it fun were removed a few years back when Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort was remodeled.

With that said, Panchito’s is still an excellent gift shop. They often have a nice selection of resort-branded merchandise representing Coronado Springs. Secondly, this massive gift shop is filled to the brim with apparel, toys, art, snacks, gifts, and many souvenirs. You could spend a good amount of time shopping here.

Panchito’s is located inside El Centro, Coronado Springs lobby. It is right behind the fountain.

#3 Zawadi Marketplace at Animal Kingdom Lodge

Any reason to visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a good reason. One such reason could be to visit Zawadi Marketplace.

This gift shop has all the usual souvenirs, but it also has an extensive collection of African animal wood carvings. Often, you’ll find a native African wood carver sitting outside the entrance of the gift shop crafting his wares.

You might also find a few cheetah-print items, like Minnie Mouse Ears or a Disney backpack by Loungefly. Both are usually available when we stop in to browse.

Zawadi Marketplace is located on the immediate right once you enter the Jambo House lobby. Additionally, a secondary entrance from the outside walkway leads down to the bus stop.

#2 Boutiki at Disney’s Polynesian

Have you ever had a store where you knew you were in trouble before you got there? Well, Boutiki at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is one of them for me. As I write this, several cute Tommy Bahamas dresses are on my mind. Maybe they’ll be sold out soon before temptation gets the best of me.

However, there will likely be something new to replace them because Boutiki has tons of cute merch! Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you stop in for a visit. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort’s gift shop is located on the first floor of the Great Ceremonial House.

Tip: The Polynesian Tiki Lamp is notorious for getting broken during shipping.

#1 BVG at Disney’s Contemporary

Ask any day, and we’ll tell you that the best gift shop among Disney Resorts is the BVG, short for Bayview Gifts at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. While Boutiki gives this store some fierce competition, the BVG gets a bit of an edge.

Why? Well, where else would you find monorail merchandise? This shop is also constantly refreshed with the latest items. It’s a real treasure trove. You’ll find BVG on the resort’s Grand Concourse floor. Inside the shop, a few windows look out to stunning Bay Lake. Hence the name Bayview Gifts.

Tip : If you’re looking for the latest Disney Dooney and Bourke bags, this is an excellent place to check. They usually have a nice selection along the back wall.

Final Thoughts on the Resort Gift Shops at Disney

Overall, we love all of the resort gift shops at Walt Disney World. However, the ones mentioned above require a stop every time we visit the resorts. So we consider them a little extra special.

All of the Ship-Shape Merchandise Available Now at Disney’s Yacht Club

Hello from Disney’s Yacht Club Resort! We were taking a stroll along the BoardWalk when we stopped into The Market to see what fun resort merchandise finds Yacht Club currently has to offer. 

The Market at Ale & Compass

We love Disney’s Yacht Club for quite a few reasons, with some of them being their fun nautical theming, apparel, and accessories that make great souvenirs to take home from your trip. 

This ceramic mug has the resort colors and logo on one side and “Mickey’s Sailing Club” with the mouse himself on the other.

Yacht Club Mug

At $21.99, it’s the perfect size for your morning coffee before a stroll along the BoardWalk. 

The resort cap has a nautical touch with a band of blue rope circling an embroidered resort logo.

Yacht Club Hat

The back of the cap has a blue and white adjustable band and is $29.99. It’s the perfect cap for a day of sailing! 

Resort T-Shirt

If you love taking home shirts as souvenirs, this may be more up your alley!

A soft red shirt with a stamped-style Disney’s Yacht Club logo is available for $29.99.

Resort Beach Towel 

This was a large beach towel! The towel is navy and a lighter blue with a grey and red resort logo for $26.99. 

Yacht Club Beach Towel

While towels are provided at the resort pools, it would be great for taking on the beach near Disney’s Beach Club!

There’s even a fun rope pattern with lighthouses, anchors, and Mickey heads on the other side. 

Resort Robe

We’re big fans of the fluffy robes that you can find in the closets in your resort room and now you can take one home! 

Yacht Club Robe

The all-white robe has a soft, fluffy interior with pockets on the exterior and an adjustable band. 

The robe is $99.99 and features an embroidered Yacht Club logo on the upper left pocket. 

Women’s Vineyard Vines Pullover

It’s always a little chilly on the water and what better way to stay warm than with a cozy pullover for $128.

The jersey-like material is incredibly soft! It also has a more updated resort logo.

Men’s Vineyard Vines Pullover 

There’s also a men’s Vineyard Vines pullover that’s made of a more athletic, breathable material.

It has blue stripes and also has an embroidered logo for $135.

Resort Ornament 

We love Christmas ornaments! This one has Mickey and Minnie as sailors in a boat with the Yacht Club on the sail.

Yacht Club Ornament

This would make such a cute addition to any tree. The ornament is $24.99.

Resort Corkcicle 

We’re finding Corkcicles all over the park now that they are an official Walt Disney World sponsor, and the resorts are no exception.

Yacht Club Corkcicle 

For $44.99, you can take home this blue metal tumbler with the Corkcicle logo on one side and Disney’s Yacht Club on the other. These are also great to use during your stay as they keep your drinks quite cold.

Resort Ceramic Dish 

This sweet little accessory dish reminds you to “Cast Your Cares Away” while Mickey and Minnie go sailing past a lighthouse with the resort in the background.

Magnets are also a great take-home souvenir!

I'm pretty sure my YC room will have a refrigerator. I have a 2 yr old and will need milk and a few little snacks for her for the evening. We have DDDP so we won't really need much once back in the room. I'm wondering if the gift shop sells milk? Also do they sell any wine?

You will need to walk through the hotel to get to the store over in the beach club to buy food and drinks.

They should have wine - I think all the resort stores do, I just never looked at Beach Club Marketplace (which is the location that has food/beverage for both Yacht & Beach). Milk and snacks, definitely. There's quite a bit in the fridge for cooking in the room - like frozen microwave dinners, eggs, bacon, etc. - due to having Beach Club Villas at the resort. The Yacht Club store (Fittings & Fairings) is clothes & accessories only last I knew.  

If you can't find wine at Marketplace at BC, they have it at the store on the Boardwalk. You will also find some in WS in EP.

In August 2014, the YC gift shop (Fittings & Fairings?) had both milk and wine. We purchased milk for our coffee from there.

Resort-Specific Merchandise at Disney’s Yacht Club

The Disney World resort hotels offer merchandise selections specific to the hotel. The selection at the Yacht Club is not as large as at many of the other WDW hotels. The items that are available have, not surprisingly, a nautical feel, with images of anchors and sailor stripe motifs. Look for men’s and women’s sportswear, prints of the resort, decorative items like ornaments and magnets, and household glassware.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Offering Disney Cruise Line Merchandise and Treats

Over at  Disney’s Yacht Club Resort  at Walt Disney World Resort there is a limited time offering of Disney Cruise Line treats, drinks, and merchandise.

Disney Cruise Line merchandise will be available in the Market at Ale & Compass offering an assortment from apparel for the whole family, drinkware, nautical luggage, and more. While we have not been over to the Yacht Club to check out the selection, I suspect it will be similar to the merchandise offerings at the Marketplace Co-Op Disney Cruise Line pop up shop at Disney Springs .

If merchandise doesn’t float your boat, the Yacht Club’s chefs created some Disney Cruise Line themed treats available at The Market at Ale & Compass. The offerings include a blueberry cream cheese trifle, Mickey-shaped rice crispy treat and lemon tart with raspberry mousse.

Owned by Chuck Bond. I'd definitely say its one of the best places to live in Moscow. It's just off campus, affordably priced, and 'round the clock maintenance and speedy response to any issues. Extremely well maintained. Laundry facility on site and great neighbors! Nothing better than living in the Yacht Club for 3.5 years!! Chuck's amazing!
