Yachtley Crew & Wayward Sons at the Starlight Bowl

July 15, 2023 @ 6:00 pm.

yachtley crew starlight bowl

YACHTLEY CREW For those unfamiliar with the concept, ‘Yacht Rock’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and power ballad hits of the late 70s to the early 80s. And while yes, a lot of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, the music itself is still a guilty pleasure to listen to, watch and sing along!

Although just about everyone appreciates how ridiculous it is to sing along at the top of your lungs to “Brandy”, “Africa” or “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)”, it is a perfect example of the rediscovery of this era in music.

WAYWARD SONS Wayward Sons is a nostalgia-fueled, power chord-packed rock show featuring the greatest songs of the ‘80s including hits from Journey, Queen, Bon Jovi, Styx, Def Leppard and Guns N Roses. This LA based band have become the reigning kings of the Sunset Strip and regularly headline legendary Southern California rock venues such as The Viper Room, The Belly Up and many others. This tailor-made rock & roll concert is choreographed and arranged by seasoned musicians and singers who hit all the right notes, transporting audiences back to the area-rock favorites that defined a generation.

You will not only be entertained. You will dance and you will sing along! Monster guitar riffs, face-melting solos, lighter-igniting ballads, heart-pounding rhythms, searing vocals, skin-clinging spandex, pure raunchy rock & roll euphoria resplendent with flowing locks of hair and genuine fake English accents.

When Wayward Sons hit the stage, it’s an arena rock party that will blow your socks off, every night!

Yachtley Crew and the Radio Rebels at Starlight Bowl

Yachtley Crew and the Radio Rebels play the  Starlight Bowl on Saturday, July 16.

Yachtley Crew – Yacht Rock

yachtley crew starlight bowl

For those unfamiliar with the concept, ‘Yacht Rock’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and power ballad hits of the late 70s to the early 80s. And while yes, a lot of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, the music itself is still a guilty pleasure to listen to, watch and sing along!

Although just about everyone appreciates how ridiculous it is to sing along at the top of your lungs to “Brandy,” “Africa” or “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” it is a perfect example of the rediscovery of this era in music.

Yächtley Crëw, also known as, “The Titans of Soft Rock,” will reel you in with not only their great sound but also their silly and fun antics as they perform these timeless soft rock hits by Christopher Cross to Hall & Oates to Toto and more!

By being the first to have fun themselves with their heightened ironic songs, they keep it light enough to amuse the younger members of the crowd but respectful enough for those who remember singing along to all these hits on AM radio back in the day to enjoy, too! You will love the look of their thematic nautical suits and highly entertaining, cheeky, self-aware choreography.

Radio Rebels – Variety Music Era Act

Yachtley Crew and Radio Rebels play the Starlight Bowl on Saturday, July 16.

These pro musicians will take you straight back to the 80s/90s! The Radio Rebels play top dance hits, tribute rock, grunge and new wave, giving the feeling that you are listening to the original band at the height of their popularity!

Starlight Bowl Celebrates America’s 247th Birthday With Flair

David Laurell

PHOTO GALLERY

With unseasonably cool temperatures augmented by a summer breeze that was not at all typical for a Fourth of July in Southern California, the city of Burbank Parks and Recreation staff, scores of volunteers, Burbank police and fire officers, food vendors, entertainers and pyrotechnic professionals were all doing their last-minute checks as the sun began its descent over the Starlight Bowl last Tuesday.

Overseeing the final preparations for an evening that would include a flyover, food, music and a fireworks show to celebrate America’s 247th birthday, Recreation Services Manager Erin Barrows, Deputy Parks Director Kris Smith and Senior Recreation Leader Jocelyn Navarro gave the thumbs up to open the bowl’s gates shortly after 5 p.m.

Welcomed by Amy Hammes of the Burbank Recycle Center and volunteers from the Burbank Veterans Committee led by Mickey DePalo, each person in the throng were handed a small American flag upon entrance.

Celebrating the Fourth of July at the Starlight Bowl has become a tradition for many Burbankers, including Rey and Gema Sanchez, who were accompanied by their son Trey, daughter Veronica St. Clair, who plays the role of Riley Velez on the NBC drama “La Brea,” and her beau Michael Bradway.

“We have been coming here as a family since the kids were very young,” said Gema. “They wouldn’t know a Fourth of July that didn’t include celebrating at the Starlight Bowl.”

Once the full house settled, the evening’s festivities got underway with recent John Burroughs High School grad Chloe Barthelemy’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a flyover by the Condor Squadron.

Making it a true “Beautiful Day,” the event’s entertainment kicked off with a performance by Hollywood U2, a U2 tribute band that features Joe Hier as Bono.

Having been honored with the Hollywood FAME Producers Choice Award for an outstanding U2 tribute band and nominated as Best Tribute Band by the L.A. Music Awards, Hollywood U2 was also selected to perform on Mark Cuban’s show “The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands.”

Following a brief intermission, the evening’s main event had the sold-out crowd on their feet and celebrating being “Born in the USA” as The Rising, which pays homage to Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, presented the music of “The Boss” portrayed by Tom Vitorino, Steven Van Zandt as interpreted by John Doran, and the late Clarence “The Big Man” Clemons, performed by Tim Miles.

The evening, which concluded with a fireworks extravaganza, was not only a perfect way to end the celebration, but it also left an emotional impact on Vitorino.

“Playing the Starlight Bowl on the Fourth was a spiritual experience,” he said the following day. “I have never been that close to a fireworks show in my life, and that just made it all the more magical.”

Having arrived early that afternoon to do a sound check, Vitorino said he always likes to walk around a venue prior to playing.

“I walked up on the grass area and just took it all in,” said the man who has been portraying Springsteen on stage for 23 years. “It’s like an intimate Hollywood Bowl with a vibe that reminds me of the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.”

Vitorino said from the moment he walked out on the Starlight Bowl’s stage he felt an energy that is rare.

“The show had a very unique and moving tone for me, right from the start,” he said. “The audience was deeply into what we were doing. I could feel that intensity and when we did ‘My Hometown’ I looked out and saw some people crying.”

Saying he was especially touched by the communal spirit of the evening, Vitorino was moved numerous times during his performance.

“As a society we have, sadly, become such isolationists that it was emotional for me to see all those people sitting on those benches, right next to one another, and really into the music,” he added. “I specifically remember at one point, the lights hit in such a way that all I could see were the shadows of thousands of people on the bowl’s rocky sides. The entire night was magical for me, and Erin (Barrows) and her crew were all so positive. That really set the tone for us right from the time we arrived.”

With the Starlight Bowl’s 2023 Summer Concert Series now officially under way, Saturday night’s show will feature Yachtley Crew and Wayward Sons.

On Saturday, July 22, Starlight bowl favorites The Fab Four will be joined by The Monkee Men to bring back The Beatles and The Monkees. The month will then conclude with tributes to The Eagles by The Long Run and Linda Ronstadt by Ronstadt Revival on Saturday, July 29.

Saturday, Aug. 5, will bring Bruno and the Hooligans to the Starlight’s stage along with Prince Again’s tribute to Prince, with the series finale taking place on Saturday, Aug. 12, featuring Queen Nation’s tribute to Queen and The K-Tell All Stars.

Progressive jam giants Umphrey's McGee‘s return to Las Vegas for the seventh installment of the massively popular UMBowl production was marked once again by a stand-out tour closing dual evening extravaganza where all stops were pulled out and the power given directly to the fans, for better or for worse.

On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Yachtley Crew, the seven-piece band who burst onto the California club scene in 2017, selling out countless local venues before exploding into a nationally recognized touring act will release their debut six-song EP, Seas the Day, on July 14th via Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records.

Seas the Day was produced and mixed by Grammy award winning Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day) and features the band’s first original song “Sex on the Beach,” accompanied by a video with a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host, Mario Lopez.

The video was directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid) and will debut on July 17th. The band is managed by longtime industry icon Andy Gould (Rob Zombie, Pantera, Lionel Richie, Guns N’ Roses).

The nautical-suited and captain’s-hat-clad Yachtley Crew (also known as “The Titans of Soft Rock”), includes lead vocalist Phillip Daniel (Philly Ocean), drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald). The ships ahoy septet are joined on the album by special guest, world-class percussionist Lenny Castro.

“We’re beyond excited to release our first album,” said Yachtley Crew. “Seas the Day is a love letter to the fans who have made this all possible, and a dream come true to be on the Mailboat Records roster, alongside their incredible artists.”

Adds Chris Lord-Alge: “Yachtley Crew brought new life to the songs we all know so well. The energy and enthusiasm in making the first EP was fantastic! There will be more to come and I have no doubt Yachtley Crew will be full steam ahead of its time conquering the globe!”

For those uninitiated, Yacht Rock encapsulates the revival of soft rock and Top 40 hits from the late ‘70s to the early ‘80s, which has become a nation wide phenomenon, inspiring fans to dress the part and sing along.

Other songs on Seas the Day include fan favorites such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” and all-time Yacht Rock pioneer Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass’ “Brandy” and Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”

Yachtley Crew are currently on a nationwide “Seas The Day” tour, with a residency at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas through December. The band performed and helped ring in the New Year on KLAS and KTLA’s “Las Vegas Countdown to 2023,” the exclusive, Emmy-winning special syndicated across 14 Nexstar markets and reaches more than 16.5 million U.S. TV households.
