Speed on the Water article Written by Matt Trulio Without question, the nomenclature surrounding the Spectre line of catamarans, which was originally created by Florida-based Jay Pilini, has been confusing at times during the years. But given that Screaming Eagle Boats of Bellefontaine, Ohio, owns the Pilini-designed tooling for the Spectre 30-, 32- and 36-foot catamarans—the tooling was purchased from its former owner Chris Ivey—company principal Todd Lamb has decided that a name change is in order. “We have had some confusion in the past with potential customers inquiring about Spectre Powerboats and being confused with the Screaming Eagle Boats name,” Lamb said. “So after discussing a lot of pros and cons in a meeting this past week, the decision was made to drop the Screaming Eagle Boats name and just keep the Spectre Powerboats name solely. “So from here on forward we will be known as ‘Spectre’ and ‘Spectre Powerboats,’ ” he added. “Hopefully we should have the first one out of the paint shop soon and back down here getting rigged.” Still in the sport catamaran manufacturing business, Pilini’s current company is called Pilini Marine Technologies. “Although Jay Pilini is the originator of Spectre Powerboats, he sold that company in 2006 and is no longer affiliated with the construction of any Spectre cat after that date,” the Pilini website states.

SEB takes a bigger leap into the CAT boat market with Todd and Karen Lamb purchasing the remaining molds and company name of Spectre Powerboats. Last summer, Screaming Eagle Boats purchased the 30’ and 36’ original Spectre boat molds. At that time the 32’ molds and the Spectre company name was not for sale. Todd told the owner of Spectre, if he ever wanted to sell, to put him first on the list. It just so happened, that the first of this year Todd received that call from the owner of Spectre. Even though this was happening a lot quicker than expected, SEB knew it was a now or never opportunity. After a month and a half of sleepless nights, SEB officially closed the deal Friday, February 16th, 2018. The SEB crew is very excited to have the complete Spectre line up along with Talon and American Offshore Powerboats under one roof. There are great things to come with this company, and great quality boats to back it!

"Screaming Eagle Boats, Talon 22 - The Talon 22 is without a doubt one of the most stunning designs of any boat from any time. I remember seeing one in a magazine as a kid and it literally looked like a spaceship compared to other boats. With a wide stance and swept back fairing, the small Talon looks like it was designed in a wind tunnel by an F1 racing team. But, it was actually designed and originally built by Gary Armington, who previously built a 21 that was unique but not the caliber the 22 is. Not long ago the molds exchanged hands and are now being built by Screaming Eagle Boats. The owner Todd Lamb, has posted some awesome builds recently and it looks like they are doing a great job. You can get a brand new one from them and when rigged with a 300 XS will eclipse 100 MPH no problem. Still one of the nicest looking small tunnels around, they are a center pod design that can handle big power and is a really stable boat that is near impossible to beat. The hull is exactly 22’ with an 8’ beam and weighs about 1,150 Lbs."

The Return of Spectre Powerboats

After making its name as a builder of high-performance catamarans in the 1980s and 1990s as Spectre Powerboats, the manufacturer is taking on a new role as Spectre Offshore Performance Marine and creating center consoles.

While most builders such as Nor-Tech , Deep Impact and Contender are building high-dollar stepped bottom boats, Spectre Offshore Performance Marine president Jay Pilini is taking a different approach. “Our new Spectre 35 is designed to fill a niche in the current center console market that is wide open,” he said. “It’s equipped with more standard features than boats priced tens of thousands above us.”

A veteran builder of high-performance boats, Pilini knows that customers demand quality fit and finish and the ability to accommodate custom requests.

At 34’8” long with a 9’9” beam, the Spectre 35’ CC is a whole lot of boat. It’s available with Mercury or Yamaha outboards and the most popular configuration is two motors. The boat will top 60 mph on a non-stepped V-bottom, which is a plus when it comes time to call your insurance agent. Because of the load that center consoles often carry, including people, gear, ice, refreshments, etc, Pilini doesn’t think that steps are effective so he sticks with a conventional design. To help give the driver maximum control, the boat comes standard with heavy-duty trim tabs.

FIVE FAST CENTER CONSOLES

From a construction standpoint, Spectre Offshore builds the boat with vacuum-bagged composites laid up with vinylester resin. No wood is used in the construction of the Spectre 35’ CC and the boat requires more than 50 molded parts.

Popular features include a padded forward seat, walk-in head area with electric commode and a comfortable helm console. There are stainless-steel cupholders positioned throughout the boat for easy hydration. If you want to fish, there are insulated boxes that measure nearly 6’ long aft in the cockpit sole. LED courtesy lights will illuminate the cockpit if you like to cruise or fish at night.

INSURANCE FOR FAST CENTER CONSOLES

For convenient reboarding when the kids want to take a dip, the swim platform is equipped with a stainless-steel ladder and a freshwater shower. To keep everyone shaded on a hot day, the boat comes standard with a heavy-duty aluminum T-top with Sunbrella canvas and aft-facing lights.

New 32-Footer From Hellkats Powerboats A Team Effort

A little more than two years ago, an ambitious Miami-based automobile dealer named Rey Marino purchased the tooling for the Jay Pilini-designed 30-foot Spectre sport catamaran and created a sport cat company of his own called Hellkats Powerboats . According to its founder, the company has delivered a dozen of the outboard engine-powered 30-footers since then.

The first Hellkats Powerboats 32-foot catamaran will debut at the Keys Island Runners Key West Poker Run next month.

But with the ongoing trend toward wider tunnels in the go-fast catamaran world, Marino had his eyes on a larger. His goal was to extend and widen the 30-foot Spectre hull, as well as create a new flat deck for it.

Now the first new 32-foot widebody catamaran from Hellkats Powerboats is out of the mold and almost complete—with three more customer-ordered builds behind it. Getting there, however, was the product of teamwork between Marino and his friend Todd DeFilipps of Wicked Power Boats in Naples, Fla.

A veteran offshore powerboat racer who competes in the Super Stock ranks, DeFilipps was in the process of widening the full and creating the deck for 30 Spectre catamaran of his own when Marino began his project.

“We were doing same project at same time,” Marino said, then laughed. “And I got some good ideas from Todd.”

The two boat-builder friends struck a deal. DeFilipps would complete the hull, which meant expanding the tunnel to 45 to 63 inches, and deck conversion, and provide it to Marino. Marino would create the tooling from what was essentially a running plug with a 10’5” beam and start building his new 32-footer.

To add the extra length, Marino filled in the hull’s notches by about a foot before creating his hull mold. The other foot of overall length comes from the cat’s added ducktail-bustle. (Working former offshore racing great Peter Hildago, Marino also modified the steps in the sponsons—and the two reportedly are collaborating on a 40-footer.)

Marino, in turn, will build the first all-carbon-fiber 32-foot Hellkats catamaran for DeFilipps, who doesn’t know whether it will be a pleasure cat or a raceboat. 

With the addition of a 32-footer Hellkats Powerboats currently offers two catamarans—and a 40-footer reportedly is in the offing.

“I just want to see Ray do well,” said DeFilipps, who has been building his own boats since 2007. “He’s a very fast learner—a sponge who soaks up information well.”

With current power—a pair of Mercury Racing 300R outboard engines— DeFilipps and Marino expect the boat to top out between 115 and 118 mph.

Though hull No. 1 has not been sea-trialed, Marino said that should happen well before the April 23 Keys Island Runners Key West Poker Run. The boat will make its public debut at the event, which thrills Keys Island Runners founder Daniel Garcia, III, who counts Marino as a friend.

Said Garcia, “Hellkats Powerboats is one heck of a story.”

But the best part of the story could be the boat’s price. According to Marino, a base Hellkats 32 catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines will list for $300,000.

Selling my 1989 24' Skater cat. Comes with custom built 2014 Allstar Aluminum Trailer with torsion axles, brakes, custom wheels, and all LED lights. Trailer has a 5 year warranty. Motors were rebuilt at Diamond Marine last year with new top pinned Pistons, rings, beatings, custom tuners and porting, and the ECU was flashed to ROS specs by Simon Motorsports. Engines had 130-140 original hours prior to rebuilds and have approximately 20 hours now. Very clean engines and boat! 4 JL Audio 8.8's and two 10" JL subs, JL Amps, all installed by JL Audio Factory Employee. Full Sunbrella cover with suede on inside, Livorsi gauges and Livorsi throttles, LED nav lights. Blue led lights in the cockpit and white in the bilge. Racing hatch in the rear can hold a large cooler out of the way of passengers. Sportmaster lower units 20" and offshore midsections. Cleaver 3 blade props recently balanced and polished by Frank and Jimmie's in Fort Lauderdale. Latham steering with dual rams and wing plates. Boat has the throttles in the center so you can drive it using two people or just one. Trim switches wired to both sides for driver and throttleman. Boat has a tunnel tab that also has switches wored to both sides. Comes turn-key with props, hubs, etc. and will run 110mph as it sits. With more setup you could probably see 117-120mph. I have only run Aviation Fuel/Recreational (Non-Ethanol) fuel in this boat, so there are no Ethanol issues whatsoever. Boat has two fuel tanks, one on each side that hold approx 50 gallons each. If you don't know the history of Skater boats, check them out on YouTube or Google. These are world champion offshore powerboats, and this size (24ft) hasn't been made since the 90's so they are hard to come by. The engines were rebuilt by the best on the business (Marty and Joe Signorelli) and they are the only ones that have ever cracked them open. The engines started their life in freshwater and over the course of 14 years only had 140hrs put on them. These are pure race engines built to run at high rpm's for long distances, and these are also no longer produced by Mercury Marine so a nice pair like these are very rare.
