Insider Today

If you've got a spare eight figures sitting around, there's something on the market that fits right in your budget: Silvio Berlusconi's 158-foot sailing yacht, which is yours for a cool $11 million.

Of course, most things on the market fit right in your budget. This one just happens to emphasize sailing.

The multimillion-dollar vessel, which is listed for sale through Burgess Yachts and was brought to our attention by Robb Report , has pretty much everything you'd expect from a massive — and massively expensive — superyacht. It's decked out in warm wood, has an operational marble fireplace, sports several lounging and dining areas, and sleeps up to eight guests.

Plus, it's got quite the provenance. Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire businessman behind the Fox empire, had Morning Glory built in 1993. He married his third wife Wendi Deng aboard it in 1999 , according to Robb Report, and sold the yacht to the controversial Italian businessman and former Prime Minister later that year.

Take a look inside Morning Glory:

Morning Glory, a 158-foot sailing yacht owned by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, just hit the market with an asking price of $11 million.

The Historic Ketch ‘Morning Glory” Has Been Restored To Her Former Glory

perini morning glory

Lusben concluded the refit of “Morning Glory”, Perini Navi’s 48-meter sailing superyacht, famous for having the Australian telecommunications magnate Rupert Murdoch as a previous owner.

The historic  ketch , built in 1993 at the Perini Navi shipyard in Viareggio, has been restored to her original splendor according to the wishes of her new Italian owner. Through the Forza 3 company in Milan, Lusben was chosen to carry out the ten-year refit of the yacht.

The Lusben team was responsible for painting the hull, living areas and part of the aft cockpit, as well as replacing the generators and refurbishing almost half of the teak deck. The deck work in particular has allowed the shipyard’s specialized workers to highlight their experience and know-how; more than 40% of the teak was replaced with slats of variable length from 4.5 to 6 meters, a notoriously complex operation. The standard slats are typically much shorter at just 3 meters, and work of this type requires greater care and precision on sailing boats than on motor boats.

The refit went on for a total of 5 months and involved almost 50 workers in total, including direct employees and external suppliers who worked in cooperation with the crew. The incredible team effort earned the expressed interest and satisfaction of the owner, who is now ready cruise the Mediterranean.

“Morning Glory” is the first of 6 Perini Navi boats to be launched this season. The remaining 5 are currently undergoing refits at the Lusben facilities in Livorno and Viareggio, planned for delivery to their owners in the coming weeks.

Since then, many millions of dollars have been lavished on refitting Morning Glory. The updates include installing new 850-hp MAN diesels and new generators in 2010, as well as a comprehensive rebuild in 2016-17, which saw the original white hull repainted dark blue, the flybridge extended, and the entire rigging refitted.

Viareggio-based Perini Navi  is world-renowned for creating yachts that combine beauty, elegance and performance. According to yacht broker Burgess , which holds the coveted listing, Morning Glory has a top speed under power of over 14.5 knots and a transoceanic range of 4,900 nautical miles at 10 knots.

During Berlusconi’s ownership, the yacht has been a regular visitor to the Caribbean, especially Antigua, where the controversial politician and businessman has a vacation home. Summers have usually been spent cruising the French and Italian Rivieras.

With luxury accommodations for up to eight guests in four suites—as one witty commentator said, “be they blonde, brunette or redhead”— Morning Glory comes with unique features, such as a working marble fireplace, formal dining area and spiral staircase.

As for octogenarian Berlusconi, he hit the headlines last month for his split from his former partner of 12 years, 34-year old Francesca Pascale. According to the Guardian , he is reportedly now dating 30-year-old Marta Fascina, an MP from his political party.

Perini Navi ketch Morning Glory completes refit

After five months undergoing work at the Lusben shipyard in Italy, the 48-metre sailing yacht Morning Glory has completed her 10-year refit.

Previously owned by Australian-American media mogul Rupert Murdoch, Morning Glory was first delivered by Perini Navi in 1993. She has now been restored to her former glory according to the wishes of her new Italian owner, who now plans to cruise her in the Mediterranean.

Constructed in steel and aluminium, Morning Glory is classified as a motorsailor with 990 square metres of easily handled sail area as well as twin 850hp MAN diesel engines that give her a top speed of 14.5 knots and a trans-oceanic range of 4,900nm at 10 knots. She can also accommodate up to 10 guests and eight crew in her classic-style interiors.

The refurbishment project involved as many as 50 workers who managed to ensure that her re-launch stayed on schedule despite limitations imposed by the pandemic. Work undertaken by the team included a repaint of the navy blue and gold-striped hull, the living areas and the aft cockpit, as well as replacements of the generators.

A large portion of Morning Glory ’s teak deck was also refitted by specialists, with more than 40% of the teak replaced with slats ranging in length from four to six meters. This was a notoriously complex operation, as standard slats are typically much shorter at just three meters long, but the team at Lusben was able to successfully undertake the work with the care and precision required.

Morning Glory is the first of six superyachts currently undergoing work at the shipyard and scheduled to be re-launched by Lusben this season, with delivery to their owners expected within the next few weeks. Despite current conditions, The Viareggio site has seen a peak of 23 boats visiting its work stations, ranging in length from 28 to 50 metres.

Rupert Murdoch, the Greatest Romantic of Our Time

murdoch's yacht morning glory

By Emily Jane Fox

This image may contain Human Person and Dating

Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire 84-year-old News Corp. mogul, made headlines this week, as he’s accustomed to doing, for his engagement to 59-year-old former model and rock-star wife Jerry Hall. This will be Murdoch’s fourth march to the altar, Hall’s second.

News that the executive popped the question [after a mere four-month courtship] (http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/01/rupert-murdoch-and-jerry-hall-are-engaged) set off a Rube Goldberg-like chain of dropping jaws and exclamations. No one saw it coming. It happened so quickly, almost without warning. The age difference—a cool 25 years—furrowed some eyebrows. That Murdoch and rock legend Mick Jagger , Hall’s ex-lover and father of her four children, would wed the same woman is a fact some simply cannot digest. And that the duo announced their engagement in a classified ad in a Murdoch-owned newspaper, well, that was the aptly strange cherry on top.

The biggest question the coupling left in its wake was why Murdoch, no stranger to a punishing, public divorce, would choose to marry again. The man, worth more than $11 billion, is 84. Surely, he could enjoy his twilight years, his successes, and riches in the company of a female, or several females, without having to go through the rigmarole of a legal partnership. But to say that would discount the fact that Rupert Murdoch is perhaps the greatest romantic of our time. It’s a conclusion easy to draw from any examination of his love life past. The man just loves love.

With the exception of just about three years between and after his divorces, Murdoch has been married since 1956. That’s 60 years of combined matrimony. He’s been married since before Alaska and Hawaii were considered part of the union, through 11 U.S. presidents. Murdoch’s first three marriages lasted 11 years, 31 years, and 14 years, respectively. The average length of a marriage that ends in divorce in the United States is just over eight years.

Murdoch wed his first wife, Patricia Booker , in 1956, when he was just 25 years old. Booker, a beautiful blonde former department-store model and airline hostess, gave birth to Murdoch’s eldest child, __Prudence, two years later. Though Murdoch’s mother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch reportedly regarded Booker as “less than” she should have been, the two remained married for 11 years, though their love ended in divorce. Mothers always know best.

But Murdoch’s failed first attempt didn’t ding his hope in the institution. In fact, he wed again just about a year later, this time to Anna Torv , to whom he remained married until 1999. In a dishy 2001 magazine interview with Australia Women’s Weekly , the former Mrs. Murdoch revealed how the two met and fell in love. She was working her way up at the Murdoch-owned Daily Mirror in Sydney when she decided she wanted to interview her boss, whom she found quite handsome. “He was like a whirlwind coming into the room. It was very seductive,” she told the Weekly . The article also reports that Murdoch himself spoke of their meeting, saying, “I thought she was a very pretty girl. Her writing skills were not going through my mind.” The rest, they say, is history. The two had three children together, she published several novels through Murdoch’s publishing companies, and sailed through three decades as a highly public couple. By the late 1990s, Anna said she wanted her husband to slow down, enjoy their 155-foot yacht, and take time for the two of them to enjoy one another and their growing family. Rupert, she said, was not interested.

The two separated in 1998, around the time that Murdoch started to be seen with Wendi Deng , who interned for him him at the News Corp.-owned Star TV in Hong Kong, where she reportedly traveled with Murdoch throughout Asia serving as a translator. After one of their trips, Murdoch informed one of his employees that Deng would not be returning to work at Star TV.

“I don’t want to get too personal about all this, but [he] was extremely hard, ruthless, and determined that he was going to go through with this no matter what I wanted or what I was trying to do to save the marriage,” Anna told the Weekly . “Perhaps I was in love with the idea of still being in love with him. But the Rupert I fell in love with could not have behaved this way.”

The two announced their separation in a gossip column in the News Corp.-owned New York Post. “I think that Rupert's affair with Wendi Deng—it's not an original plot—was the end of the marriage,” she said.

Anna, who was entitled to half of Murdoch’s wealth and a fair share of his many properties, walked away with far less than she was entitled to in order to have a fresh start (she married a wealthy financier just four months after the divorce; the Weekly interview took place at their Hamptons estate). One stipulation Anna was very clear about was that his four children would take over his empire, in order to protect them from his future wives or children down the road.

Just 17 days after the ink dried on their divorce papers, Murdoch married Deng aboard that same 155-foot yacht, Morning Glory, in New York Harbor in front of about 85 guests, who enjoyed a trio of songs from singer Charlotte Church . According to The Hollywood Reporter , one guest recalled Murdoch giving a long speech “that he loved her and would take care of her, forever and ever.” The couple took off on a honeymoon. A photo of the nuptials was later posted on the News Corp. Web site.

In the name of love, Murdoch and Deng first moved into an apartment in Soho, a far cry and cab ride from his preferred Upper East Side. Vanity Fair contributing editor Mark Seal wrote that he was “reborn under the direction” of his third wife, who is 38 years his junior, going as far as enduring a rigid yoga routine, darkening his hair, and abandoning his coat-and-tie standard for a more relaxed, casual look. He would drink a concoction of soy protein and fruit in the morning if she told him to. He would eat only Chinese food if she said. The pair had two daughters in their 14-year marriage, though the mogul was far older than he was his first or second time around as a dad. These are the things you do as a romantic, as a man besotted for the third time.

Unfortunately, that love was not enough to make it work, though it seems Murdoch’s devotion was not the issue. Rumors of Deng’s high-profile infidelity wounded him so, and the two were divorced in 2014 .

But not one, not two, not even three commitments gone wrong are enough to keep the modern-day Romeo away. He and Hall, who were introduced by one of Murdoch’s sisters and have reportedly introduced a combined 10 children, seem to be giving it a go, despite the loves, and divorce settlements, he’s lost along the way. Pre-nuptial agreement or not (though, likely, pre-nuptial agreement): Is there anything more purely romantic than an octogenarian willing to put his fortune on the line for the fourth time for no other discernible reason other than to satisfy his heart’s desire? The answer is no. Let’s hope the fourth time is the charm.

Murdoch Divorce Said to Be Almost Final

By Peter Lattman and Amy Chozick

  • Nov. 19, 2013

Rupert Murdoch and Wendi Deng Murdoch are negotiating the final details of their divorce settlement, a deal that will officially end the 14-year marriage of the media mogul and his third wife, according to people with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

A judge has scheduled a hearing in the case, Murdoch vs. Murdoch, for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, according to a courthouse clerk. Both Murdochs are scheduled to attend the conference.

Lawyers for the couple could announce at the hearing, or even earlier, that they have reached an agreement, though the talks could still fall apart, these people cautioned.

William D. Zabel, a lawyer for Ms. Murdoch, declined to comment. Mr. Murdoch’s divorce lawyer, Ira E. Garr, was not immediately available to comment.

People close to the Murdochs have described the settlement negotiations as amicable, in part because they signed one prenuptial and two postnuptial agreements outlining the separation of assets in the event of a divorce.

Still, there have been several contested issues. It is unclear how those issues have been resolved, but one of the stickier ones is the dividing of their residences. In New York, the Murdochs lived in a penthouse triplex at 834 Fifth Avenue that was once owned by Laurance S. Rockefeller. The Murdochs purchased the apartment for $44 million in 2005.

In Beijing, they own a siheyuan, a courtyard-style house near the Chinese capital’s Forbidden City. Shortly after marrying, they transformed the home in an old hutong, or alley, into a sprawling oasis filled with works by Chinese artists. Mrs. Murdoch has held parties there in the past with such guests as Tony and Cherie Blair. There are also properties in Australia, London and California.

There are also the custody arrangements for their daughters, Grace, 12, and Chloe, 10. Mr. Murdoch has four children from his previous two marriages.

In addition, the Murdoch family trust, which holds most of Mr. Murdoch’s wealth, estimated at about $13 billion, has been a point of contention. Mr. Murdoch upset his wife by not giving their daughters the same voting rights in the trust as his four elder children. The two girls do, however, have an equal economic interest.

For the last several years, Mrs. Murdoch has focused on producing movies.

Mr. Murdoch has devoted his time to the recent split of his multibillion-dollar media conglomerate into two separate companies, News Corporation, the publishing company, and 21st Century Fox, which houses the entertainment assets.

Once a fixture on the New York social circuit with a group of loyal friends that includes David Geffen, Diane von Furstenberg, Arianna Huffington and Bono, Mrs. Murdoch has kept a low profile since June, when Mr. Murdoch surprised her with divorce papers. The filing said that the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.”

Mr. Murdoch met Wendi Deng in 1998 on a business trip to China, where she worked for a division of News Corporation. They married a year later in New York harbor aboard Mr. Murdoch’s 155-foot sailing yacht, the Morning Glory.

The boat has been put up for sale.

An earlier version of this article misstated the age of the Murdochs’ daughter Grace. She turned 12 on Tuesday; she is not 11 years old.

Stupenda barca. Franco

Holiday like a media mogul on Rupert Murdoch's superyacht

It boasts five spacious suites, several luxurious salons, a gym and the king size bed in which Rupert Murdoch enjoys his holiday lie-ins. And now, from just €210,000 (£181,000) a week, you too can holiday like a media mogul, accompanied by nine lucky guests, and attended to day and night by the same number of exceptionally solicitous staff.

The Australian tycoon may head a $33bn (£20bn) global newspaper and television empire, but even billionaires can do with a little extra pocket money now and then. It has emerged that the News Corporation chairman has made his yacht, Rosehearty, a 183ft (56-metre) "aluminium masterpiece", available for holiday rents – although of course only those with quite a few million of their own need apply.

The charter company CharterWorld.com is listing the three-year-old yacht for hire in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, boasting "magnificent" performance and "a stunning interior by famous French designer Christian Liaigre" that includes "full beam owner's suite with king bed and sitting area". The yacht's two tenders, reportedly named Grace and Chloe after Murdoch's young twin daughters, are included, along with two dinghies complete with instructor, six sets of dive gear, and nine plasma TVs.

Photographs on the company's site of the interior reveal the 78-year-old to have a minimalist taste in interior design that one might suggest (though not in any outlet owned by NewsCorp) borders on the bland. The spacious main salon features a large sofa in beige, the same colour as featured in the internal reception rooms, and, for the sake of consistency, the bedrooms. A similar approach to colour characterises its exterior – hull and masts are a brilliant, uninterrupted white.

Hugo Andreae, editor-in-chief of the magazine Superyacht World, said at 56 metres the Rosehearty was certainly "up there" in terms of luxury and scale, but was by no means among the flashiest of vessels favoured by the super-rich. "A few years ago that would have been a pretty sizeable yacht, but these days you regularly build up to 100 metres."

With even Murdoch's relative tiddler costing an estimated €30m, however, Andreae said it was not unusual for the super-wealthy to offer their yachts for charter "to offset the enormous costs. There are certainly bigger and more luxurious boats available." He added that those hiring a boat would not be made aware of its owner's identity. "It's a very discreet world, for obvious reasons."

According to enthusiasts who have posted sightings on the web, the Rosehearty has recently sailed around Alaska, where Murdoch has reportedly been holidaying with the actor Mel Gibson, according to Gawker.com . One spotter on the site yachts.monacoeye.com reported that she arrived two days ago in British Columbia, Canada, commenting: "What a beauty!"

Others who have first-hand experience of the Rosehearty are the Conservative leader, David Cameron, who in October took a private jet to the Greek island of Santorini where the yacht was moored in order have drinks on board with the NewsCorp chairman. Singer Billy Joel, a sailing enthusiast, has also reportedly spent time on board with Murdoch and his wife, Wendi Deng.

The billionaire has been a yachting fan for some time, marrying Deng on board the Morning Glory in New York harbour in 1999. At 48 metres, however, that boat was evidently not large enough for his growing second family; happily, Murdoch found another media tycoon on whom to offload it – the Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

Other top lets

Richard Branson's private island, Necker, is available for private hire for $51,000 (£30,000) a night, with a minimum stay of five nights. The 74-acre island, part of the British Virgin Islands, can accommodate up to 28 people.

The £80m Maltese Falcon yacht of Tom Perkins, a Silicon Valley billionaire, can be hired for £300,000 a week, and comes with four dinghies, two windsurfers and a jet ski. It can accommodate 16 guests, with 18 crew.

Musha Cay, a group of 11 islands in the Bahamas owned by David Copper–field can be rented from $37,500 for 12 people to $46,500 for 24 people. The islands have five guest houses, 40 beaches, a gym, and other facilities.

Mick Jagger lets out his oceanfront villa, Stargroves, in Mustique. The six-bedroom Japanese-style villa comes with a large koi pond, a freshwater swimming pool and croquet court. There is also a cook, butler and gardener. It is available for £6,500 a week between May and December.

Goldeneye, an 18-acre estate in Jamaica, was originally owned by Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, and is where he wrote 17 of his novels. It is now owned by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. The estate and its three villas can be rented, with the main villa costing from $2,500 a night.
