As the evolution of the trawler and cruising motoryacht continued into the 1980s, there was growing interest in developing boats with raised pilothouses to separate the helm station from the rest of the boat. Robert Beebe wrote about this in his seminal Voyaging Under Power. The need for a protected helm, from which the boat could continue on course at sea, without the distraction from galley lighting or crew quarters, day and night, was considered important enough for designers to include models with a raised pilothouse, much like one sees on commercial vessels.

The introduction of the Krogen 42 in 1976, then the Fleming 55 in the mid-1980s (as Grand Banks owners clamored for a pilothouse yacht with the quality of Grand Banks), followed by the Nordhavn 46, all set the expectation that a raised pilothouse was now a requirement of any serious passagemaker and ocean-going cruising motoryacht. While they have been around for quite some time, in Northern Europe and elsewhere, Art DeFever was a big proponent of the style, as well as Willard and other designers building pilothouse cruising yachts in fiberglass, wood and steel, and demand for raised pilothouse cruising yachts became mainstream by the 1990s.

Of course, there have been pleasure yachts built on commercial fishing hulls, such as Delta Marine’s 70-foot Zopilote, which circumnavigated before it began showing up on the bucket list of those in the world cruising community. The Pacific Northwest has a history of pilothouse trawlers, as the conditions are demanding for the fishing fleets that work the Northwest and Alaska.

In its most common form, the raised pilothouse is located up a few steps from the saloon and galley level, bringing the pilothouse above the rest of the boat. This provides a commanding view from large forward and side windows. There are generally one or two doors to the side decks, many of which are well protected by a Portuguese bridge. The large helm console has enough real estate for a full complement of cruising electronics, navigation instruments, VHF and SSB radios, engine and generator controls and gauges, bow and stern thrusters, windshield washer, horn, and firefighting controls. All of the electrical panels are usually in the pilothouse as well.

It is the command center for all the boat’s systems.

One can safely and comfortably drive this type yacht from the pilothouse in all weather, with air conditioning and heat to match the conditions. There is usually a fixed helm chair that is more of a throne. Crew can also enjoy the day’s journey in the pilothouse, seated on settees wrapped around a table. There is also a chart table and storage for navigation tools.

While an ocean passage on most other types of offshore boats calls for a complete wardrobe of foul weather gear and robust safety equipment, with harnesses and strobes, it is common to cross an ocean (or any body of water, for that matter) from the comfort of a pilothouse wearing flip flops.

Some pilothouse designs have access down to the accommodations from the pilothouse, but that not always. And while it is generally easy to bring meals, drinks, and snacks up to the pilothouse so the crew can eat meals together underway, that is also not always the case. The Nordhavn 62, for example, requires the crew to climb a steep set of steps, balancing plates, glasses, wine bottles, and cutlery while holding onto the railing for safety. It is just the nature of this design, which has about the most shippy profile as anyone will find. 

Stepping outside of the pilothouse during a night watch is a nice break to get some refreshing air and reminds you how great standing watch is in the protection of the pilothouse.

Some of the builders of raised pilothouse yachts include Alaskan, Nordlund, Outer Reef, Fleming, Northern Marine, Kadey-Krogen, Nordhavn, Offshore, Cheoy Lee, Ocean Alexander, Nordic Tugs, Selene, Marlow, Vripack, Northwest Yachts, and others.

Most pilothouse yachts have a large destroyer-type wheel for steering, but a trend today is to use jog sticks instead to control the autopilot(s) steering the boat. The big wheel is removed and stored out of the way.

Docking usually requires stepping out of the pilothouse, and many yachts have controls for using the thrusters and engine controls on handheld remotes or wing stations off the bridge or in the aft cockpit.

Whether the front windows are raked back for that “North Sea” look, are vertical as found on tug yachts, or slanted forward for a sleeker profile, standing watch in a raised pilothouse is a marvelous experience. 

It feels like driving a small ship, or as close as one can get.

1995 4788 Bayliner Pilothouse Motoryacht

We just finished a 260 mile loop out to Block Island and a couple of other fun stops along the way. Cruising weather was some of the best we have ever seen and the boat performed exactly as expected. Due to schedules and changes we will be around Long Island another month and a half before we head back up to Kingston for the winter months. Thanks for looking at happy boating. “No Worries” sleeps six, privately and very comfortably, with two in the forward master stateroom, accompanied by a private head with tub and shower, control to lower Heat/AC and stereo. Two more sleep in the guest stateroom amidships. Additionally, forward, there are upper and lower berths, to port which also converts to a settee. There is a second head with shower in the companionway across from the guest stateroom. Also, in the companionway is access to the washer/dryer and central vacuum system. The salon is equipped with an L-shaped lounge, 2 chairs, a dining and cocktail table, wet bar, ice maker, built-in blender, CD stereo, television DVD/VCR and plenty of storage. The battery switches are also conveniently located in the salon. There are 4 access panels to the main engines as well as entry to the engine room through the companionway stairs. The galley, located adjacent to the salon, is equipped with a full size refrigerator/freezer, trash compactor, microwave, 3-burner stove with oven, double sink, Heat/AC control for main unit and ample storage. The pilothouse has a full lower station, and wrap around settee with removable insert and table. It is equipped with auto pilot, radar, GPS, VHF, depth sounder, turbo boost gauges, pyrometer gauges and vacuum gauges. Both DC ad AC electrical panels are located here, along with all monitoring systems, generator controls, anchor windlass control, search light control, Heat/AC control to upper unit and map area. Access doors to both port and starboard walk-arounds and steps to flybridge. The flybridge station has wrap around seating (dry storage underneath), GPS, auto pilot, VHF, depth sounder, stereo/CD and dinghy/jetski cradle and davit. The flybridge also has a bimini top which can be easily opened and closed. The cockpit is spacious and has two storage lockers, a fresh water and saltwater wash down and hot/cold shower. There is also a ladder which goes directly to the flybridge from the cockpit. The Bayliner 4788 has packed more flexibility, amenities and economy into a boating package than any other comparable sized boat. All boats are compromises, but the larger areas of the 4788, coupled with its fuel economy of better than 1mpg (0.92 nmpg) at 16-18 knots, or 3-4 mpg if you keep it below hull speed, help make it a great choice for many boating families. These are fantastic boats to own, but as with any boat each one would have been maintained and operated differently which will greatly affect their future use. Our boat is a great fit for anyone to use immediately as is and/or for extended cruising such as the great loop. It would also be a good fit for those who have viewed a number of these boats and have been discouraged by their poor represented mechanical or overall condition. Our boat has always received all required proactive maintenance prior to any failures rather than the typical 'repair when failed' type of parts replacement. We have permanently installed direct gauges for EGT, boost, and fuel vacuum, which allows you to continually monitor engine conditions in real time. We have owned the larger Bayliner motor yachts for 20+ years and have the knowledge to answer most any question you may have about this boat and its engines. Looking to move into the crewed-yacht experience? Gilman Yachts has a 2003 127-foot Burger Tri-Deck Motoryacht listed for $7.9 million. Impetuous has the pedigree to push limits with a 5,000-nautical-mile range, giving owners the ability to practically throw a pin at a world map to set their next waypoint.

Impetuous is unique in that it’s wheelchair accessible throughout most of the yacht thanks to an elevator, wide passerelle, gantry cranes and a swim platform scissor lift. Its amenities allow for wheelchair access to the gangway, master stateroom, main deck, skylounge and swim platform. There are also three cranes strategically placed around Impetuous .

Waste-to-ceiling windows running the length of the salon bring in light that plays off the rich sole-to-ceiling pomelli and sapele mahogany finishes and light-tone furnishings, creating a sense of warmth and adding to the sense of volume. The salon’s lounge area is aft with an L-shaped sofa to port and two lounge chairs. A more formal dining area is forward of a marble-topped banquette of forward-facing drawers with seating for eight to 10 guests.

The salon’s forward bulkhead hides the stairs and the vessel’s all-deck-access elevator is adjacent to the staircase. 

Taking the starboard walkway forward leads to the commercial galley, the day head and the yacht’s on-deck master stateroom. The well-appointed galley has state-of-the-art appliances, stowage for extended voyages and caters to the culinary aspirations of the most discerning chef. Features and appliances include:

The full-beam (27’3″) on-deck master stateroom has a centerline king berth, a flat-screen TV and a his-and-hers en suite head. Impetuous ’ sense of luxury carries through to the lower deck accommodations, which has four additional staterooms for guests, all en suite. Two VIP staterooms have queen berths and are abaft the two guest staterooms with twin berths. Crew cabins can sleep six to seven.

One deck up from the main deck are the pilothouse, captain’s cabin and skylounge. Forward, the pilothouse has a helm station with additional bench seating. Heading aft towards the skylounge you pass the captain’s cabin. The skylounge beckons guests to sit and stay a while with two three-person sofas, a large ottoman and a flat-screen TV.

The uppermost deck on Impetuous is the open flybridge, which is clearly a space designed for lounging and outdoor entertainment. Amenities on the flybridge include sun pads flanking a Whirlpool spa, a four-stool bar, two forward-facing bench seats and two additional aft-facing bench seats that flank the helm station.

The cockpit has shaded alfresco dining thanks to the superstructure’s overhang with space for eight at the transom bench seat and fixed table.

Twin 1,300 hp Caterpillar 3508 diesels power Impetuous , giving it a top speed of 15 knots. At its top speed, the 127-footer will see a reported 1,700-nautical-mile range. Range increases to 3,700 nm at11.5 knots. At 10 knots, range is a reported 5,000 nm. It’s worth noting the CAT engines had a fresh top-end rebuild in November 2022.
