ABOUT Sanlorenzo SX112

The flagship of the SX line measures 112′. Her main characteristics include the beach club opening on each sides and the continuous main deck, cleared of the more traditional wheelhouse. The yacht offers large tender storage on the beach club, while not in use, optimising the interior volume to the maximum. 

The enclosed sundeck offers the only wheelhouse for the crew to operate the yacht, clearing up a lot of space on the main deck, allowing to position either a forward facing lounge or the master suite on the main, deck with stellar views, a rare feat for a yacht in her class. Another unique feature aboard has to be that beach club, folding out on each side and carrying the tenders while cruising. The amount of available space wile at anchor is simply enormous. 

The suites located on the lower deck are just forward of the beach club, featuring a lounge and a gym. The four suites are generous each coming with an ensuite and a bathroom and a walk-in closet.

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF THE NEW SANLORENZO SX112 AT GENOA BOAT SHOW

Exterior Design: Zuccon International Project / Interior design: Piero Lissoni

The SX112   is the new flagship  of the innovative  SX crossover line , the first in the world of yachting, launched in 2017 by Sanlorenzo and result of the synthesis between the classic motor yacht with flybridge and what is now recognised as an Explorer yacht. A combination of style, flexibility and functional quality.

The SX112 is 34 meters in length and represents the consolidation of a path that began with the SX88, first, and then the SX76. Many of the normal barriers on board are eliminated, and the boat opens to the outside, in a close relationship with environment beyond.

The design of the new model has been assigned, for the external lines, to the creativity of  Bernardo Zuccon , of Studio Zuccon International Project, who has concentrated on reinforcing the “family feeling” of the range, bringing out certain linguistic choices such as the balance of the volumes and the fluid forms, and to  Piero Lissoni , art director of the company since 2018, for the interiors of the first unit, who has focused on the subdivision of the internal spaces, in constant dialogue with their outdoor counterparts.

In line with the concept developed for the other models, the main deck has been organized as an open space, to maximize the relationship with outdoor spaces.

The focal point of the project is the new stern zone, which undoubtedly represents the most iconic area of the yacht, a choice that generates new living perspectives based on an idea of the architect  Luca Santella , creator of the concept of the innovative SX crossover line. A refinement and evolution of the design of SX88, the new model offers a spacious beach area of about 90 sqm, expandable thanks to folding terraces, composed of an internal zone with fitness area directly connected to the outside by means of large sliding glass doors that permit the owners to utilize the spaces in an unprecedented way, maximizing the indoor-outdoor relationship.

The SX112 is the flagship of the innovative SX crossover line, which has broken the mould by offering a new type of yacht on the market. A synthesis of the classic motor yacht with a flying bridge and explorer type, the SX range is a proposal where style and functionality merge into a common language.

The project concept

A line that was born from the constant dialogue between the company and its’ owners and that has led to the creation of a project never seen before in the yachting world, to meet the new needs of a constantly evolving market. A range of yachts that favours the use of the boat at sea, designed for true yachting enthusiasts.”

The SX112 represents the consolidation of a journey that began with the SX88 and then the SX76, a challenge that continues and is enriched with new content, and which aims to offer a new way of experiencing the sea: on board barriers fall away and the boat opens up to the outside world, entering into a relationship with the marine habitat.

The focal point of the project is the new stern area, which is undoubtedly the yacht’s iconic space, a choice that gives the project new propositions and living perspectives, the brainchild of the architect Luca Santella, who also came up with the concept for the innovative SX crossover line.

A conceptual refinement of the SX88 project, this new model offers a spacious beach area of about 90 squaremetres, which can be extended thanks to the fold-down terraces, consisting of an indoor space, with a gym area directly connected to the outside, through large sliding glass windows that allow owners to enjoy these spaces in a new way, maximising the connection between indoor and outdoor.

A large platform where large toys can be hosted and which allows direct contact with the sea.

The SX112’s design is characterised by the extensive use of glass. The innovative wheelhouse, which is located exclusively on the fly bridge, can be fully closed and air-conditioned by electrically operating windows or opened to let the sea breeze in.

The main deck saloon is also enclosed by floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural light from all sides, increasing the sense of space and allowing the view of the sea to be enjoyed at all times, thanks also to the openings in the bulwark at the centre of the boat.

An absolute innovation on the SX112 is the position of the engine room, which for the first time has been located under the stern platform, making it possible to recover 40 square metres of space on board.

The design of the new crossover model was once again entrusted to the creativity of Bernardo Zuccon, of Studio Zuccon International Project, for the exterior lines and Piero Lissoni for the interiors of the first unit.

The design studio Zuccon International Project on the one hand has been busy consolidating an image, working strongly on the concept of family feeling of the range, on the other, it has had the opportunity to strengthen some linguistic choices thanks to the extension of the yacht’s dimensions.

“On the SX112 there is more ‘oxygen’ available to convey the stylistic message, into a logic of signs where the harmony and balance of the volumes can be traced back to languages similar to the principles of organic architecture. The shapes are fluid, almost a reminder of the nature of large marine mammals. This is a product for those who really love the nature of the sea and which combines a transversal and innovative type of living space, that alters the traditional distributional balances with what are now the “must-haves” that the market demands, even on vessels with more contained dimensions.”

Interior design by Piero Lissoni

After the interior design projects for SX88 and SX76, Piero Lissoni returns to design the interiors of the SX line, devoting particular attention to the subdivision of the interior in continuous dialogue with the exterior.

In line with the concept conceived for the other models, the main deck is designed as an open space that reinterprets the concept of areas inside the boat, developing into a single, continuous environment from stern to bow with a living area, adjacent to the bar area and followed by a dining area, seamless between inside and outside, thanks also to the large windows that overlook the sea. This innovative solution, which maximises the relationship with the open-air spaces, was introduced by Sanlorenzo for the first time on the SX88, thanks to the helm station located on the fly bridge, which keeps the area on deck free forward of the saloon, making it possible to create a single environment.

“The SX112 is another empirical model, like every new model we work on with Sanlorenzo.
In this case we have brought an even more architectural attitude: it is a floating building.
We have connected the spaces exactly as in a building through very technological openings that relate the inside to the outside and vice versa. In fact, we have built a villa that floats.”

The forward area of the main deck is fully equipped to offer a living, convivial and relaxing space with a very large sun deck that can be converted into a very private and shaded dining area.

The stairs are once again a fundamental and characterising element of Lissoni’s design. The internal helical staircase is developed on three levels to connect the decks and, at the height of the main deck, is enclosed in a transparent oval volume, like a precious jewel box, that enhances it while making it appear to be suspended in the air. The external stairs, on the other hand, are requisite and have a clean design, built according to the principles of racing boats.

“The element that links all three models in the SX line is the vertical connection. Usually on boats the connections are almost always serviceable or sometimes become incredibly decorative. As an architect, I thought of inserting absolutely astonishing details into the boats, such as the stairs, which are designed specifically for each model.”

On the lower deck, the SX112 offers accommodation in three large cabins, one for the owner and two VIP cabins, plus a lounge area enclosed by wooden panelling and mirrored walls, that can be converted into a twin or double cabin. On the lower deck, there is also a kitchen connected directly to the crew quarters.

Details and materials are the leitmotif common to all the interiors, carefully chosen to combine Japanese purity with Italian elegance.

From the tatami, used both in the cabins to cover the floors and headboards of the beds and for the ceilings of the interior spaces, to the wooden walls that define the main deck and the sleeping area where it is combined with bronzed mirror walls that amplify the space. The bathrooms are adorned with the precious veined marble, while teak characterises the exteriors.

A perfect example of Lissoni’s style, combining refinement and simplicity in a space characterised by soft, neutral colours, flooded on all sides with natural light to create a warm, private atmosphere. This is aided by the counter-trend decision not to adapt the furnishings to the spaces but to arrange them freely, as in a home where design proposals, icons of the great masters and objets trouvés are combined in the name of maximum contamination.

The companies involved, representing the excellence of international design, include Alpi, B&B Italia, Boffi, Cassina, Flos, FontanaArte, Glas Italia, Living Divani, Oluce, TechnoGym and Vitra.

With the new SX112 crossover yacht, Sanlorenzo once again focuses on the concept of liveability through solutions that allow all spaces to be lived in freedom. A project made possible by that unique combination of creativity, research, industrial perfection and craftsmanship that has rendered Sanlorenzo world-class excellence.

A pioneer by definition, visionary and determined, Sanlorenzo once again looks to the horizon and beyond, shaping a new imaginary to give rise to original habitat solutions. Hence the new SX112, the flagship of the innovative SX crossover line, the first in the world of yachting , launched in 2017 by Sanlorenzo through the initiative of Massimo Perotti , Executive Chairman of the company, who thanks to his courage and ability to defy conventions has brought a new type of yacht to the market.

A blend of the classic motor yacht with flying bridge, for which Sanlorenzo has been and continues to be one of the worldwide leaders, and the Explorer type, the SX range is an ‘intelligent’ proposal where style, flexibility and functional quality come together in a shared language.

A refinement of the SX88 project, the new model here propose a spacious internal beach area that is directly connected to the outside, allowing the yacht owner to enjoy these spaces in a novel way, also thanks to the retractable terraces, maximizing the indoor-outdoor connection.

While Zuccon has concentrated on reinforcing the ‘family feeling’ of the range, bringing out certain linguistic choices such as the balance of the volumes and the fluid forms that seem to reference large marine mammals, Lissoni has focused on the subdivision of the internal spaces, in constant dialogue with their outdoor counterparts.  I

n line with the concept developed for the other models, the main deck has been organized as an open space, an innovative solution introduced by Sanlorenzo for the first time on the SX88, to maximize the relationship with outdoor spaces.

Thanks to the wheelhouse placed on the flying bridge, freeing up the bow zone of the living area on the main deck, a single continuous space has been created for the living and dining areas. Staircases return as a fundamental characteristic of Lissoni’s design. The internal helical staircase extends through three levels to connect the decks, and at the height of the main deck it is enclosed in a transparent oval volume like a precious coffer, enhancing the staircase while making it seem to be suspended in the air.

The external staircases have an essential, clean look, in keeping with the principles of racing yachts. Details and materials are the leitmotif shared by all the internal spaces, selected with care in a combination of Japanese purity and Italian elegance.

With the new SX112 crossover yacht, Sanlorenzo again puts the concept of livability at the center, through solutions that permit total freedom of use of all the spaces. A project that is possible thanks that unique combination of creativity, research, industrial perfection and craftsmanship that has made Sanlorenzo an example of excellence on a worldwide level.

As wakesurfing rises in popularity in Hong Kong, even surpassing wakeboarding – a similar, yet fundamentally different sport – surfing boat manufacturers have taken the opportunity to modify, refine, and upgrade their boat designs. Unlike wakeboarding, wakesurfing requires a particular set of features, such as a different engine placement and hull shape, alongside innovative and advanced equipment to provide an enjoyable, safe, and unforgettable wakesurfing experience.

The main difference between wakesurfing and wakeboarding is that with wakesurfing, you aren’t permanently attached to the boat via a rope. Wakeboarding gained popularity thanks to being an invigorating and fun sport in which you travel at high speeds across the water behind a boat. Wakesurfing is typically a slower – but by no means easier – sport in which you surf in the waves made by the boat’s engines. This provides surfers in Hong Kong with much easier and guaranteed access to surfable waves, provided the boat is designed correctly.

The design of the boat

The design of wakesurfing boats differs from wakeboarding boats in that there is a greater emphasis on your safety. Rather than jutting out of the back of the boat, the propellers are located on the bottom – safely out of reach of anyone in the water.

In addition to this, boats with a convex V-shaped hull ride deeper in the water, creating a bigger and more surfable wave. This is different from boats with flatter hulls that might be better for water skiing, for example.

Depending on the model of the boat, there is ample storage and a luxurious cockpit with plenty of space to move around in. There is also plenty of ballast weight on the boat for extra security without sacrificing any storage space.

Benetti ’s latest design concept and the smaller Oasis deck that preceded it are just two examples of how clients are looking to replace starched salons and prim dining rooms with larger, easier-living exterior spaces. This also includes a preference for foldout rear decks, reimagined bows, and balconies that extend when activated, all of which are in evidence on Bilgin ’s 263-foot Leona , which showcases how to design every conceivable square foot across the yacht toward enhancing the outside environment. 

That trend “has really gained steam,” says Dickie Bannenberg, of yacht-design house Bannenberg & Rowell . “Now it’s all balconies, beach clubs, and shell doors everywhere you look. And it’s not just on 200-foot boats, either—it extends down into production models.” 

Andrew Collett, team principal at U.K.-based design firm RWD , which conceived both the Oasis and the Veranda deck configurations, says the change in tack is driven by a new generation of owners who are “seeking spacious areas that blend indoor and outdoor living, with clear views of the water.” 

The pandemic intensified demand for airier layouts, says Collett, much as tuberculosis impacted modernist architecture in the 20th century, when residential blueprints began to include hospital-inspired sanctuaries with balconies and clean, well-lit interiors. And while he says that some of the aesthetic shift predated the pandemic’s lockdowns, it’s also true that “Covid heightened the appreciation for open-air environments and privacy. Now we’re just aligning with new preferences for health consciousness.” 

As with carbon fiber’s popularity in smaller boats, “the evolution of glass-related technologies makes possible what really wasn’t achievable in the past,” says Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon , designer of Sanlorenzo ’s 57Steel Virtuosity and many other glass-laden superyachts. “Since structural glass is at times stronger than steel, we’re seeing the extreme enhancement of transparent surfaces. That allows for great versatility in our designs.” 

Glass’s technical renaissance—and how the notion of boundaries has changed thanks to it—is evident on gigayachts including the 297-foot Dar, the 263-foot Excellence, and the 263-foot Artefact, but nowhere more so than the 141-foot catamaran This Is It, with a superstructure and hull made of more than 50 percent of the material. 

Other recent launches, including Sanlorenzo’s SX112, feature entirely open aft decks with cutaway sides, while Sanlorenzo’s X-Space and Baglietto ’s T52 maximize as much exterior square footage as their designers could justify across their tiered decks. 

“People don’t want to be inside,” says Bannenberg. “They want healthy outdoor living, and the designers are adapting accordingly.” Which means, for increasingly innovative superyacht concepts, the sky’s the limit.
