15 Best Things to Do in Gadsden (AL)

The charming city of Gadsden lies on the banks of Coosa River in northeast Alabama . In the 19th century, it was an important shipping center and economic hub for tire, rubber and steel companies.

Today, remnants of these industries still remain, however, the city is better known for its welcoming atmosphere, parks, lakes and gardens. It’s also a superb city to discover local history and outdoor pursuits, and if you are touring the Deep South, Gadsden is within a short drive of Birmingham , Chattanooga and Atlanta .

I’m an Alabama native and Gadsden is a really cool city that I love to visit. I think it’s a great place to take the kids, with museums, outdoor pursuits and performing arts to enjoy.

I’m sure you will enjoy my list of the best things to do in Gadsden:

1. Noccalula Falls Park

Noccalula Falls Park

Noccalula Falls Park is the most popular Gadsden attraction. Set on a picturesque 250-acres, it’s home to Noccalula Falls – a magnificent waterfall which cascades 90 feet below into the Black Creek.

The park’s 1.7-mile trail takes you through beautiful scenery, past rock formations, shrubs and botanical gardens. You can walk, jog or mountain bike, or if you prefer a more leisurely approach, take a trip on the park’s train. There are camp sites and cabins, and even a Noccalula Falls Wedding Chapel if you fancy tying the knot during your stay!

Children aren’t excluded either, the park has a petting zoo, miniature golf course and historic Pioneer Village.

2. Noccalula Waterfall

Noccalula Falls, Gadsden

Inside Noccalula Falls Park are the legendary Noccalula Falls. Best viewed when there’s plenty of water in spring and winter, although stunning at any time of year, it’s a wonderful sight to see. Learn all about the legend of Native American Princess Noccalula, for whom the falls are named after, and see her statue along the park trails.

For the best vistas, walk across the bridge above the falls. The bridge offers 360-degree panoramic views of the cascade and lush surrounding parkland.

Alternatively, to experience the falls from a different perspective, I suggest following the Gorge Trail underneath the waterfall for incredible photography shots.

3. Gadsden Museum of Art

Gadsden Museum of Art

The Gadsden Museum of Art is located in the Downtown area of the city. It first opened in 1965, showcasing artwork and exhibits synonymous with artists from the region.

The museum encompasses three galleries over three floors with solo artist shows, historic photography and cultural artefacts on display. It has a pretty relaxed vibe, plenty of interactive activities for children, and even a café where you can sample good ole’ fashioned southern cooking.

4. Neely Henry Lake

Neely Henry Dam

Neely Henry Lake is often referred to as Gadsden’s best kept secret, and it’s easy to see why. The lake attracts anglers from all over America with 11,200 acres of water and 339 miles of shoreline. It’s packed with different species of fish, from bass and bluegill to catfish, plus, you have the option to take a boat out, or fish from the shore.

If fishing isn’t for you,  I recommend enjoying a leisurely trip to Neely Henry Dam, created in 1966 to provide Gadsden with hydroelectric power, or stop off for some bird-watching at Ten Islands Historic Park. You may be lucky enough to see Bald Eagles, Purple Martins, Prairie Warblers and Eastern Screech-Owls, so don’t forget your binoculars.

For a completely different experience, I suggest hiring a mountain bike to explore the pathways and verdant forest trails along the water’s edge, and break for a picnic to take in breath-taking lakeside views.

5. Back Forty Beer Co.

Back Forty Beer Co.

If you like to sample award-winning craft beer wherever you go, head for Back Forty Beer Company. Set in an historic 1940s Sears & Roebuck red-brick warehouse, the brewery was named after an old agricultural term referring to the most fertile soil on the farmland.

With imaginatively named ales, such as ‘Naked Pig’ and ‘Truck Stop Honey’, you are sure to find a pale ale, brown ale or speciality beer to your taste. Whether you wish to sample craft beer, have a bite to eat at Back Forty Test Kitchen, or make new friends, you’re assured of a warm welcome at Back Forty Beer Co.

6. Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts

Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts

The Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts opened in Gadsden in 1990. A non-profit arts centre, it’s located inside an old remodelled department store on the corner of Broad Street in Downtown.

The building is distinctive and easy to spot with a tri-colour cylinder at the entrance and a triangular rooftop. This impressive center hosts a range of travelling art exhibitions, visual displays and performances, and between April and September you can kick back and enjoy concerts in the pretty New Orleans-style courtyard.

7. Chestnut Station

Live Music

If you want to be where the action is, Chestnut Station in Gadsden comes pretty close. This lively bar/grill and music venue always has something going on. Whether you fancy impressing locals with your Karaoke skills, want to listen to live music, or shake your stuff on the dancefloor, you can do it all here.

Throw some deep-fried southern buffalo wings, mini corn dogs and local brew into the mix, and you’re in for a fun night!

8. Tigers for Tomorrow

Tiger

Located on 140 acres, Tigers for Tomorrow is a non-profit wild animal preserve, with over 170 tigers, African lions, black leopards and bears. This non-breeding reserve offers a forever home to many predatory animals who were at threat in the wild.

The sanctuary’s goal is to bridge the gap between humans and animals through conservation and education. I highly recommend taking a look at the private tours and educational group visits that are on offer, where you can see wolves, cougars and more in this picturesque park set in the Appalachian foothills.

9. Chief Ladiga Trail

Hiking

With 33 miles of paved pathways, Chief Ladiga Trail is the ideal place for cycling, jogging, hiking or even inline skating. You can bike, or walk through emerald forests, passing farmland, and wetlands brimming with wildlife.

There’s no motorized traffic, so you can enjoy Alabama’s natural beauty in peace as you weave through Cleburne and Calhoun counties. There are several streams dotted along the trail, offering the perfect spot for a picnic, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the countryside in all its glory.

10. Mort Glosser Amphitheater

Mort Glosser Amphitheatre

Mort Glosser Amphitheater was built in Gadsden in 1935. It was constructed from locally-sourced sandstone quarried from Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. The outdoor theatre features a half-hexagon shaped seating area, timber frame and stone arch, and a club room. It was utilised during the Second World War as a USO centre to entertain servicemen from nearby camps.

In the decades which followed, it has hosted live music events, summer plays, boxing matches and even political rallies. Every first Friday during the summer you can enjoy free concerts, or there’s the option to hire the amphitheater for your own celebration.

11. Etowah Memorial Bridge

Etowah Memorial Bridge

Etowah Memorial Bridge, or Coosa River Bridge as it’s also known, spans the Coosa River in Gadsden.

Built in 1927 by Charles G. Kershaw Contracting Company of Birmingham, Alabama, the open-spandrel concrete arch bridge is dedicated to the memory of servicemen who lost their lives during World War I. The memorial plaque and monument can be seen at the entrance prior to crossing, there’s also some great views of the cityscape from the bridge, so don’t forget your camera.

12. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Golf

Surrounded by Lee’s Lake the Appalachian foothills, The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Silver Lakes awaits. This incredible verdant landscape with forests, grasslands and wetlands is a sight to behold. There are 36 holes of golf to play, on a variety of challenging courses including The Mindbreaker, Heartbreaker, Backbreaker, and The Short Course.

As you make your way around the golfing trail, skies, colors and landscapes change dramatically throughout the day, displaying an atmospheric, cinematic backdrop as you navigate some of the best courses in Alabama.

13. Downtown Gadsden

Downtown Gadsden

Downtown Gadsden is home to great shopping, dining and museums. Whether you’re seeking a special gift for a loved one, discovering local artwork, or want to enjoy ‘First Friday’ events with locals, this is the place to be.

First Friday’s are held on, you guessed it, the first Friday of each month on Broad Street in Downtown Gadsden. It’s an event which everyone in the city comes out for, with street food vendors, classic cars, market stalls and live music. Bring the family, make new friends and dance, dine, and shop till the sun goes down.

If you are looking for a place to eat I recommend The Rail Public House , which is an upscale pub in Downtown Gadsden.

14. Imagination Place Children’s Museum

Imagination Place Children’s Museum

Designed for children between the ages of 2 and 10 years, Imagination Place is a safe zone where kids can learn, explore and interact with exhibits. Discover the museum’s permanent exhibit, KidsTown USA, a miniature town center for youngsters.

Visit the grocery store, board the Imagination Express train, or even sail on a sunken pirate ship! Whatever your children fancy doing during their Gadsden trip, here, the imagination knows no bounds.

15. Central Carver Legacy Museum

Central Carver Legacy Museum

Carver High School served African-American students of Gadsden until it was closed in 1971. It was named in honor of George Washington Carver, the famous American botanist and inventor.

The museum, located in the old high school, showcases the positive impact it had on the African-American community at the time, through a range of displays, exhibits and artwork. I think it’s a great example of how a small school, transformed into a thriving educational center with new departments, gymnasiums, 26 classrooms and a lunchroom.

My 9 Favorite Things To Do In Beautiful Gadsden, Alabama

riverboat in gadsden alabama

  • Destinations
  • United States

Gadsden, Alabama, in Etowah County, has a prime location in the northeast quadrant of the State of Alabama between Birmingham and Chattanooga and just off Interstate 59. The population numbering approximately 36,000 enjoys the geographic beauty of the Appalachian foothills, a vibrant downtown, and the advantages that come with life along the Coosa River.

It is a city of superlatives, at least if you believe their claims to fame such as “the world’s largest” and “the world’s longest” as you will see on my list. Gadsden also has a famous park with a captivating legend. It’s a great place to spend a day or a weekend, and I have recently been able to enjoy both. Here are my suggestions for nine must-do activities when you find Gadsden for yourself.

Noccalula Falls

1. Noccalula Falls

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Indian maiden who was in love with a young brave in her tribe. Her father, the chief, made a different alliance and promised her to another man. To learn the rest of the story, visit the 90-foot waterfall at Noccalula Falls Park and see the statue of Princess Noccalula.

At the park, you can camp in an RV or tent, rent one of the two-bedroom cabins, walk, hike, or bike 16 miles of trails, visit the petting zoo, enjoy a train ride, explore a pioneer homestead, or play miniature golf. Fly fishing for trout is available in season in Black Creek feeding the magnificent falls.

Special events at the park include Smoke on the Falls, which is the annual Kansas City Bar-B-Q Society Cook-off held in the spring, and Art on the Rocks, an arts and craft show held in the fall.

Although Noccalula may have been a legend, it is an important part of Gadsden history that the Creek and Cherokee nations of American Indians inhabited the area in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Pro Tip: The two-bedroom cabins are particularly nice for a getaway in the fall. The colors of the trees are spectacular, the fireplace is cozy, and the sounds of Black Creek which can be seen from the back porch are mesmerizing.

Gadsden Variety & Deli

2. Broad Street

Mater’s Pizza and Pasta Emporium reigns as the oldest restaurant in the downtown historic district, but through the years it has been joined by two dozen other eateries. The most recent ones are S.A. Cantina, Las Brisas Mexican Restaurant, NOLA on 2 nd (a block and a half off Broad Street), and Scoop de Jour, serving great ice cream.

30 retail shops are ready to be explored, a massage and yoga studio will help you relax, and an axe-throwing business will increase your aim and focus.

Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts

3. Mary G. Hardin Center For Cultural Arts

Broad Street also serves as the City of Gadsden’s hub for fine arts with three outstanding facilities. Gadsden Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free. Imagination Place, a well-planned children’s museum, is designed for children ages 2 to 10. Everything is child-sized to make it easy for kids to explore a town, a grocery store, a train station, a farm, a sunken pirate ship, and more.

Mary G. Harden Center for Cultural Arts is on the corner of the block in what was once a Belk-Hudson department store. The center houses an art gallery, event venues, and a 72-foot model train running through a replica of Gadsden as it was in the 1940s. It is the home for the Downtown Dance Conservatory and the Etowah Youth Orchestra. Visitors can find parking along Broad Street or in the convenient lot behind the museum and center.

In addition to the Imagination Place, there are musical instruments attractive to young children in an outdoor space behind the Hardin Center. This is a great place to take children and grandchildren, especially when you combine it with an ice cream cone from nearby Scoop du Jour.

Pro Tip: Museum lovers will want to find the Gadsden Museum of Art and History. The third floor houses a history museum of Etowah County.

"World's Largest Seafood Platter" served at Top O' the River in Gadsden

4. Top O’ The River

Any meal that begins with a skillet of hot cornbread, a plate of pickled onions, and a bowl of coleslaw is promising enough, but when Top O’ the River adds catfish, shrimp prepared three different ways, stuffed crab, and hushpuppies, the meal goes over the top. I’ve seen a lot of seafood platters, and I believe this one must surely be the largest. The restaurant also offers grilled and fried crawfish, steaks, chicken, and delicious fruity drinks.

Combine that with a view of the Coosa River and it becomes swoon-worthy. The river, in fact, is a major asset for Gadsden and nearby cities such as Anniston. River Rocks Landing has recently been developed, so guests can stay on the river and enjoy the views for a night or more. You can stay in a condo or a tiny house, experience glamping, or sleep luxuriously in a five-bedroom home. The Current is a riverside snack bar and a great place to watch kayakers navigate the waters.

5. The World’s Longest Yard Sale

A yard sale that stretches for 690 miles through six states deserves the title of “World’s Longest.” Taking place annually on the first Thursday through Saturday in August, the sale begins in Gadsden at Noccalula Falls Park and ends in Addison, Michigan. The sale is also called the 127 Yard Sale because it follows Highway 127 and the Lookout Mountain Parkway.

Expect to find thousands of vendors and realize that it will be impossible to stop at all of them.

You’ll find collectibles, antiques, household goods, games, toys, dishes, fresh produce, baked goods, sporting goods, and so much more. Take plenty of cash, because only a small number of vendors will accept credit cards. Check the website for the route, plan to start at any point that looks convenient for you, expect to cover no more than 100-150 miles a day, and reserve a hotel room well in advance. Take plenty of water in a cooler in your car, and best advice of all — don’t pass up a public restroom whenever you find one.

6. Coosa Landing

The Coosa River has earned a great reputation for having impressive numbers of bass and crappie. That, in turn, has led to fishing tournaments galore beginning and ending at Coosa Landing. If you are an early riser, the start of a tournament is fun to watch with the engines revving and racing away at the starting signal, all trying to get to the best spots first. But it is also great to be there at the end when the anglers bring in the day’s catch for a weigh-in which will hopefully lead to coveted prizes.

The Coosa Landing Super Bass Tournament held in April has a hefty first-place prize of $3,000. Coosa Landing is also the host site for tournaments sponsored by Crappie U.S.A., the BASS Federation, the Women’s Bass Fishing Association, and others.

First Friday event in Gadsden

7. First Friday Festivities

From April to October each year, Broad Street is the place to be on the first Fridays of the month. Police close off several blocks beginning at 3:30 p.m. Antique cars, polished and gleaming, park on the street to be admired and possibly driven home by a new owner. Live musicians set up their speakers on a few corners, and stores and restaurants prepare to keep their doors open until 9 p.m. Then the crowds begin to show up. This is a great place to see your friends, enjoy some free entertainment, browse the shops, and order a meal. The atmosphere is light-hearted and lively. It’s like having a festival, only this festival happens every month for 7 months.

Worker preparing Noccalula Falls Park for the holidays

8. Holiday Lights

Noccalula falls park.

Gadsden dresses up for the holidays. Broad Street is filled with lights and fun window displays. There are special events planned at the Hardin Center and in area churches. But probably the most spectacular sight happens at Noccalula Falls Park when Christmas at the Falls flips the switch on millions of lights and dozens of colorful decorations. You can enjoy the lights by walking, but it’s especially fun to take the train through the park after dark. Park employees start preparing weeks in advance because this is arguably their most popular time of the year.

Barbecued ribs, grilled cabbage, grilled bread, and more at Bootsie's

9. Bootsie’s

Bootsie’s is in Attalla, and downtown Attalla is approximately 5 miles from downtown Gadsden. However, the barbecue is so good at Bootsie’s that I must include it on my list of favorite things. Daddy Bootsie is the chef. His wife manages everybody and everything, and their daughters make the desserts and keep the diners happy. Bootsie’s ribs and pulled pork are outstanding, and the side dishes are exceptionally good, too. They serve grilled cabbage rather than coleslaw, and the grilled bread is divine. No calories have been saved in this café with a happy family atmosphere.

Pro Tip: Bootsie’s is only open Wednesday through Saturday, so plan carefully to avoid being disappointed.

Gadsden has several sites that are significant to African Americans who participated in Civil Rights Marches in the early 1960s. Among them are Union Baptist Church, Dr. J.W. Stewart’s Skyliner Building, and Etowah County Courthouse.

Other popular activities in Gadsden include golfing on two championship golf courses, Silver Lakes and Twin Bridges , and indoor rock climbing at GadRock on the Coosa River. Silver Lakes is part of the acclaimed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. You’ll also want to be on the lookout for special events at Gadsden State Community College and nearby Huntsville. Let me encourage you to allow yourself time to get off the interstate between Birmingham and Chattanooga and explore this gem in Northeast Alabama.

I?ve heard of this place for years, and as many times as we?ve traveled to this area for business and leisure, this was our ... first time to try it. With all the local historical photos on the walls, you get a riverboat vibe when you first walk inside. Wecame on a Thursday night, and it wasn?t totally packed out, but was busy. However, there was no wait, and our gracious server,David, was on top of things. He brought our drinks promptly, as well as our appetizer of delicious greens with the regular?passarounds? of coleslaw and cornbread, which was also good! The two of us ordered the Biggest Seafood Platter in the world for$28.95, and honestly, we could have easily fed 3-4 adults off of everything we ordered. We will be eating it again tomorrownight! The food was very good, especially the greens, popcorn shrimp, boiled shrimp, and catfish. We will return next time we?rein the area! Thank you, David, for your excellent service and friendly smile! Highest-rated seafood restaurants in Gadsden by diners

Whether you've waited in line for soft-shell crabs in the Chesapeake Bay or savored sushi in New York City, you know there's something special about finding the right spot to enjoy seafood. From ceviche to grilled salmon and towers of shellfish, the top-rated seafood restaurants in the United States serve up mouthwatering dishes across diverse cuisines like Japanese, Latin American, and Mediterranean to suit every palate.

Of course, certain areas of the country are known for particular delicacies. California's proximity to the Pacific Ocean, for example, makes it one of the best states for seafood. The Los Angeles area serves up everything from caviar to Santa Barbara spot prawns while San Francisco is a mecca for fish tacos, ceviche, and sushi. Further north, Seattle is legendary for its shellfish, showcased at the famed fish counter at Pike Place Market.

While Chicago may be best known as a pizza capital, many flock to the city for its king crab dishes; a bit further south and east, you have Miami and its sought-after stone crab season. Southern locales like New Orleans boast fresh crawfish from the Gulf of Mexico and the two noncontiguous states have their own signature offerings, too: Alaska is known for its pollock and salmon, while Hawai'i is known for its poke.

Dining at a seafood restaurant can be one of the most memorable parts of your trip to a new city or offer comfort food in your own hometown. To celebrate the best options near you, Stacker used insights from Yelp to compile a list of the highest-rated seafood restaurants in Gadsden.

Businesses were selected using Yelp's ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself. Only restaurants with at least 10 reviews were considered. In an effort to highlight independent restaurants and local chains, those with more than five locations nationally, based on the Yelp data, were not included. Data is as of June 14, 2024.

Southside football coach Ben Stewart gets first win: How Gadsden area's new coaches are faring

Portrait of Maxwell Donaldson

Getting one's first win as a head coach is a special day for any coach and one they'll remember forever.

One Gadsden area head coach , Ben Stewart of Southside, picked up his first career win on Thursday of Week 2, with a 31-7 domination over Lee-Huntsville. Stewart is in his first season as the head coach of the Panthers after being the offensive coordinator at Oxford for the past three seasons. For Stewart and Southside (1-2), the win came later than they had wanted after two tough games to start the year. The win will not only be remembered by Stewart because of the milestone but also because of who was around for the win.

"It's a great feeling, one that I will never forget, obviously because it was my first but what made it really special was the group that we had to do it. That's what I'll remember the most about it, the guys that were there for it," Stewart said.

"Without trying to boast my own self, it makes you feel good that guys love you, not only are they happy for the team but happy for me specifically knowing it is my first win."

For Stewart, the win was a perfect image of what his style of football looks like. The Panthers were led by the their big offensive line which paved the way for more than 300 yards on the ground with all four touchdowns coming that way. Stewart, and offensive coordinator Andrew Owens, who was with him at Oxford, pride themselves on being a run-first team. Jamel Boyd led the way with 178 yards and three scores while Tae Strong added 129 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers and Stewart will look for win No. 2 on the year and career when they host Fort Payne (0-2) on Friday in a major Class 6A, Region 8 battle.

HOKES BLUFF FOOTBALL: Eagles offensive line proves it is for real in win over Etowah, move to 2-0

How rest of Gadsden area new coaches are doing to start 2024 AHSAA season

With the area coming out of Week 2, all the new Gadsden area coaches have played at least two games. It has not been a great start for any of the five new coaches, even those coming in with a wealth of experience from past stops.

Etowah: Scott Peavey

Record: 0-2

The Blue Devils didn't have an easy schedule to kick off the year, and it doesn't get easier this week either with Cherokee County. There are definite improvements around the program and the wins look to be coming in time for Peavey.

Gaston: Derrick Sewell

Record: 1-1

Gaston started the year with a big win and almost came back against Cedar Bluff. Time will tell how much the team improved, but the Bulldogs look to be moving in the right direction.

Sylvania: Tanner Nelson

Nelson also got his first head coaching win in Week 2, as the Rams took down Holly Pond to open Class 3A, Region 8 play. The Rams have the talent to compete for a playoff spot, and Nelson could have the most immediate success of any new coach.

West End: Matt Harris

Record: 0-3

It's been a tough opening start of the year for the Patriots under Harris. They had been in each game until a Week 2 loss to Falkville. They had to replace some key pieces on offense but the new starters look to be making big strides.
