SEA CORAL II is a modern, solar-powered superyacht measuring 32.00m (105’). Built by Arcadia Yachts in 2019, the yacht features a contemporary style with naval architecture by Hot Lab Yacht & Design accommodating up to 10 guests in 5 cabins. There is a crew of 6 on board.

The main deck aft is furnished with a C-shaped sofa where the arms can be used as sunpads, and a coffee table and aft-facing sofa allow for casual alfresco meals as well as outdoor lounging with reading material. Farther forward beneath the upper deck overhang there is a grand alfresco dining table suited to quick afternoon lunches or lavish meals celebrating a special occasion.

On the foredeck, there is a forward C-shaped sofa with the arms doubling as plush sunpads.

The upper deck aft is replete with plush seating, the largest lining the stern and doubling as sunbeds. More sofas are placed to port and starboard and each has a coffee table, with a forward wet be to provide refreshments throughout the day.

The refined interiors borrow minimalist and geometric elements to create clean and fresh contemporary living spaces with a nautical theme in navy and crisp white with golden accents.

The lower deck hosts the guest and crew accommodation, with the engine room behind the Master suite and the stern dedicated to storing the tender and water toys.

On the main deck, the forward room can be used as an additional salon or playroom for children and can be converted into a fifth cabin with an en-suite bathroom. Amidships is the port galley and main foyer, both of which feed into the main salon where three sofas are placed around a coffee table and have excellent views of the wall-mounted widescreen TV on the forward wall as well as through the floor to ceiling windows and glass sliding doors out onto the side decks.

SEA CORAL II Specifications

The skylounge can be separated from the forward helm station for greater privacy, and the guest space comes furnished with an L-shaped sofa, a raised table and additional chairs for formal dining.

Twin MAN V8 engines producing 1,000 HP create a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 10 guests over 5 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom and 2 twin cabins plus 1 convertible cabin. ~ The Master suite takes advantage of the full beam on the lower deck with staircase access directly into the main salon. The king-sized bed is accompanied by a wall-mounted widescreen TV, a desk, walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with two sinks, a toilet and a shower. ~ The VIP stateroom is placed forward to port of the Master suite and has an en-suite bathroom to starboard. The bedroom has two wardrobes and a wall-mounted widescreen TV opposite the bed, plus a desk. The bathroom has a toilet, sink and shower. ~ The two twin cabins are placed forward to port and starboard and each has a wardrobe with a widescreen TV, plus an en-suite bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower. ~ The main deck forward salon can be converted into a spacious fifth guest cabin with a wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower. ~ The crew of 6 will ensure that every guest is well taken care of throughout their cruise.

Many yachts rely on one or two standout features to define them, but Sea Coral 2 combines more than a dozen designer brands, a distinctive, almost military exterior, and an open-plan interior to create its own statement. With a grey hull, many windows and plumb bow, the 105-footer from Arcadia Yachts was launched several months ago, and is now cruising the Caribbean.

The owner chose his own interior designer, Alain Perrier, for the furnishings, while also working with Italian yacht designer Hot Lab on the internal and external design. Perrier said the yacht design represents the “art of relaxation and comfort,” adding that he wanted “the owner’s personality” to be seen through the décor. The design team used more than 15 Italian labels, from B&B Italia furniture to Royal Botania lighting. The one common color throughout is Klein Blue—an intense electric blue—named after the painter Yves Klein.

The designers also worked to create different moods across the boat. The upper salon’s palette of whites and off-whites match the teak floors and wood furniture, while a multifaceted Quasar Holland light fixture on the ceiling creates a dramatic starry sky effect. The bronze Tom Dickson lamp was chosen because it resembles a lantern with a candle. A B&B Italia table and Maxalto chairs complete the quaint ensemble.

This is the “play room” on Sea Coral 2 , with glass walls and ceiling as well as designer sofa, chairs and ottomans chosen to work with the space. The Klein blue of the pillows is the common color across the yacht.  Courtesy Alberto Cocchi

On the main deck, the primary living space has sofas from B&B Italia, chosen for their simple, linear design, while the lamp by Tom Dickson is the same as the upper salon. The Trizo 21 chandelier also creates the starry sky look on the ceiling (something the owner loves at night), while a Klein Blue ottoman by India Mahdavi serves as coffee table or footrest. This area can be opened up, with two bulwarks that fold out, creating terraces over the sea.

The owner’s full-beam suite, which is accessed via a private staircase, is a contrast to the rest of the boat. It has a blue carpet, Cassina armchair with felt upholstery and special seam stitches, and Cantalupi reading lights with woven leather. The owner’s cabin also includes an office, with lamps from the Flos collection.

Sea Coral 2 also has two VIP staterooms with yet more designer furniture. Despite its being a floating designer showpiece, the owner plans to live aboard the yacht, cruising the Caribbean over the next few months.

Sneak peek: Inside the Arcadia A105 Sea Coral II

The third hull in the Arcadia A105 series, Sea Coral II features an exterior designed in-house and boasts a wide selection of furnishings and accessories. Measuring 31.5 metres, Sea Coral II features a 7.76 metre beam and hull constructed from fibreglass.

On the main deck, the open aft cockpit resembles a patio on the sea. Folding side windows provide ample natural light while preserving the far-reaching ocean views. In colder climates, these windows can be kept raised to provide respite from the elements outside, creating a sheltered dining area.

Sitting in the centre of the main deck, this large living space can be completely opened up on all sides thanks to folding down bulwarks, creating two terraces on the sea. Sea Coral II’ s interior was penned by Hot Lab in collaboration with the owner’s personal designer.

The skylounge on the upper deck is one of the standout areas on board, with a sheltered dining area located aft of the bridge.

This space was designed to be used for a variety of uses and can convert into an office, playroom or second VIP cabin thanks to a sofa bed and day head adjacenet.

Master Cabin

The elegant full beam master cabin is accessed through a dedicated staircase aft. Finishing touches include reading spotlights, blue carpets and an orange finish to the furniture.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

Cargo ship hit by Houthis sinks, spilling oil and fertilizer into Red Sea

Spill could have 'devastating' effects on marine life, food and water supplies, health expert says.

Food, drinking water and marine life are at risk after a cargo ship attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels spilled oil and fertilizer into the Red Sea.

The U.S. military's Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, said early Sunday the Rubymar, a Belize-flagged vessel carrying 21,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphate sulfate fertilizer, sank at 2:15 a.m. local time Saturday.

The ship was struck by a Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile on Feb. 18 in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a waterway linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and had been drifting northward after taking on water. Before plunging, the vessel had already been leaking heavy fuel that triggered an oil slick through the waterway.

"It's really devastating," said David Rehkopf, associate professor of epidemiology and public health at Stanford University in California.

Rehkopf co-authored a study about a potential Red Sea oil spill in 2021, when the FSO Safer oil tanker carrying millions of barrels of oil was decaying and in danger of spilling. Researchers found a spill would have "catastrophic" public health ramifications for residents in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Eritrea.

Rehkopf is concerned about potential harm to marine life, which many residents rely on for food, as well as drinking water, given Saudi Arabia relies on desalination plants that filter sea water.

Spill could have 'implications for the health of millions'.

"Worst-case scenario is that there could be implications for the health of millions of people from pollution, and food supply and water supply effects," Rehkopf said.

"This would be bad anywhere. I mean, if this occurred off the coast of Florida, it would be bad. But it's exponentially worse because of the difficulties that are already going on for folks there."

The Rubymar could leak 7,000 barrels, which is only a fraction of the oil carried by the Safer until its cargo was successfully transferred to another vessel last year. But that is still significantly more oil than was spilled by the Wakashio, a Japanese ship that wrecked near Mauritius in 2020, causing millions of dollars in damages and harming the livelihood of thousands of fishermen.

Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak, the prime minister of Yemen's internationally recognized government, called the Rubymar's sinking "an unprecedented environmental disaster."

"It's a new disaster for our country and our people," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Every day, we pay for the Houthi militia's adventures, which were not stopped at plunging Yemen into the coup disaster and war."

U.S. Central Command has warned in recent days of an "environmental disaster" in the making.

Fish could become 'inedible,' researcher says

The Houthi rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, a critical waterway for energy shipments heading to Europe, since November in protest of Israel's attacks on Gaza.

The Red Sea is a vital source of food, especially in Yemen, where fishing was the second-largest export after oil before the current civil war between the Houthis and Yemen's Sunni government.

"The most direct effect is one of tainting or contamination, which means that the fish become inedible," said Peter Hodson, an oil spill expert and professor emeritus with Queens University's School of Environmental Studies in Kingston, Ont.

"The impacts are ultimately on a failure to reproduce, or a lower reproduction rate because fewer embryos and larvae survive."

Drinking water safety is of particular concern for Saudi Arabia, which for decades has been building the world's largest network of desalination plants. Cities like Jeddah rely on the facilities for almost all of their drinking water.

"If (oil) got into the intakes it would certainly start to affect the whole desalination process," Hodson said. "You might end up having to either shut down the purification process, or risk heavy damage that would completely destroy the desalination plant."

Fertilizer 'could be the worst component'

It is difficult to gauge the risk from the fertilizer that the U.S. military's Central Command and port authorities in Djibouti, adjacent to where the Rubymar sank, said the ship was transporting.

Fertilizer can fuel the proliferation of algae blooms, resulting in the loss of oxygen, asphyxiation of marine life and the creation of so-called "dead zones."

Hodson said the effect will depend on how badly the ship has broken, which will determine how quickly the toxins spill out.

"The fertilizer could be the worst component of all this, but it really depends on how intact the ship is," he said.

The Red Sea is home to some of the world's most colourful and extensive coral reefs, which are also at risk. Several are major tourist draws and increasingly a subject of great scientific research, owing to their apparent resilience to warming seawater temperatures.

Concerns raised about future spills

Ian Ralby, founder of maritime security firm I.R. Consilium, told the Associated Press that the Red Sea's unique circular water patterns aggravate these concerns. The patterns operate essentially as a giant lagoon, he said, with water moving north toward the Suez Canal during winter and outward to the Gulf of Aden in summer.

"What spills in the Red Sea, stays in the Red Sea," he said.

Ralby said he worries that even if this spill is manageable, there could be bigger disasters to come.

He said most container ships stopped using the Red Sea shipping lanes since the Houthis began targeting ships in the area. What remains, he said, are poorly maintained vessels, oil tankers and bulk carriers that pose far greater environmental risks.

"With fewer and fewer container ships to target, the odds of another spill with massive environmental impact has increased enormously," Ralby said.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn't return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa's northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu's speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu's cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

"Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined," Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.

Tech giant Fujitsu says it was hacked, warns of data breach

We can rebuild it —

Seeding steel frames brings destroyed coral reefs back to life, it won't help with heat-driven bleaching, but other human damage can be fixed..

Coral reefs, some of the most stunningly beautiful marine ecosystems on Earth, are dying. Ninety percent of them will likely be gone by 2050 due to rising ocean temperatures and pollution. “But it’s not that when they are gone, they are gone forever. We can rebuild them,” said Dr. Timothy Lamont, a marine biologist working at Lancaster University.

Lamont’s team evaluated coral reef restoration efforts done through the MARS Coral Reef Restoration Program on the coast of Indonesia and found that planting corals on a network of sand-coated steel frames brought a completely dead reef back to life in just four years. It seems like we can fix something for once.

Growing up in rubble

The restored reef examined by Lamont’s team was damaged by blast fishing done 30–40 years ago. “People were using dynamite to blow up the reef. It kills all the fish, the fish float to the surface, and you can scoop them all up. Obviously, this is very damaging to the habitat and leaves behind loose rubble fields with lots of coral skeletons,” said Lamont.

Because this loose ruble is in constant motion, tumbling and rolling around, coral larvae don’t have enough time to grow before they get squashed. So the first step to bringing damaged reefs back to life was stabilizing the rubble. The people running the MARS program did this using Reef Stars, hexagonal steel structures coated with sand. “These structures are connected into networks and pinned to the seabed to reduce the movement of the rubble,” Lamont said.

Before the reef stars were placed on the seabed, though, the MARS team manually tied little corals around them. This was meant to speed up recovery compared to letting coral larvae settle on the steel structures naturally. Based on some key measures, it worked. But there are questions about whether those measures capture everything we need to know.

Artificial coral reefs

The metric Lamont’s team used to measure the success of the MARS program restoration was a carbonate budget, which describes an overall growth of the whole reef structure. According to Lamont, a healthy coral reef has a positive carbonate budget and produces roughly 20 kilograms of limestone per square meter per year. This is exactly what his team measured in restored sites on the Indonesian reef. But while the recovered reef had the same carbonate budget as a healthy one, the organisms contributing to this budget were different.

An untouched natural reef is a diverse mixture including massive, encrusting, and plating coral species like Isopora or Porites , which contribute roughly a third of the carbonate budget. Restored reefs were almost completely dominated by smaller, branching corals like Stylophora , Acropora , and Pocillopora , which are all fast-growing species initially tied onto reef stars. The question was whether the MARS program achieved its astounding four-year reef recovery time by sacrificing biodiversity and specifically choosing corals that grow faster.
