The company also offers 4 hour charters if you want a dedicated captain or a larger travel area at your disposal. What a nice way to guarantee you can come and go to bars and restaurants as you please. Families, family reunions, bachelor and bachelorette parties all love this service!

From luxury bowriders to innovative cruisers and pontoon boats, cruising in style while experiencing the wave ripples and the sun’s warm glow accentuates the magic of these waters. Here, we’ve highlighted six of the top boat picks ideal for the Lake of the Ozarks, each one carefully selected for its performance, comfort, and class, ensuring an unforgettable boating experience.

What type of boat is best for Lake Of the Ozarks?

The best type of boat for Lake of the Ozarks depends on your preferences and intended use. However, there are a few types of boats that are particularly popular among boaters on the lake.

• Pontoon boats are a common choice, as they offer a spacious and stable platform for cruising, fishing, and entertaining. They are also suitable for families with children and elderly passengers, as they have a low center of gravity and easy access.

• Speed boats and performance boats are other popular options for thrill-seekers who want to enjoy the lake’s open waters and waves. These boats are designed for speed and agility and offer a great ride for watersports enthusiasts.

• Cruisers and yachts are ideal for those who want to spend extended periods on the lake, as they offer comfortable accommodations and amenities, such as sleeping cabins, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Yes, Lake of the Ozarks is an excellent destination for boating. With over 54,000 acres of water and more than 1,100 miles of shoreline, the lake offers plenty of space for all types of watercraft, from small fishing boats to large yachts. The lake’s clear water, varied terrain, and numerous coves and channels make it an ideal place for water sports such as skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing.

Additionally, the lake’s many marinas and boat rental companies make it easy for visitors to rent boats, purchase supplies, and enjoy all that the lake has to offer. However, it’s important to always practice safe boating habits, such as wearing life jackets, obeying speed limits and other regulations, and staying alert to other boaters and potential hazards.

The deepest part of the Lake of the Ozarks is located near the dam, where the water can reach depths of up to 130 feet (39.6 meters). However, the average depth of the lake is around 60 feet (18.3 meters). The lake’s depth can vary depending on factors such as water level fluctuations, erosion, and sedimentation, but it remains one of the deepest and most popular lakes in the Midwest region of the United States.

It can get pretty rough around Lake of the Ozarks. The best boat for Lake of the Ozarks is a multi-species boat. The best ship for Lake of the Ozarks is a 19-footer. Being close to the Lake’s main channel, I would not want to go any smaller than a 19-footer.

However, the lake is regularly monitored by state and local agencies, and efforts have been made to address these issues and improve water quality.

In general, the lake is considered to be relatively clean and safe for swimming and boating, but it’s always important to take precautions, such as avoiding areas with visible algae blooms and checking local advisories before swimming or consuming fish caught in the lake. It’s also important to practice responsible boating and fishing practices to help protect the lake’s ecosystem and maintain its cleanliness for future generations.

What created the Lake of the Ozarks?

The Lake of the Ozarks was created by the construction of the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River in central Missouri. The dam was built by the Union Electric Company (now Ameren Missouri) in the 1920s to generate hydroelectric power for St. Louis. The construction of the dam required the flooding of the Osage River valley, which in turn created the Lake of the Ozarks.

What is at the bottom of Lake of the Ozarks?

The bottom of Lake of the Ozarks is primarily composed of sediment, rock formations, and various types of aquatic plant life. The lake’s underwater landscape also includes submerged trees, docks, and other man-made structures that were inundated when the lake was created.

Additionally, the lake is home to diverse fish and other aquatic species, which can be found at different depths depending on their habitat preferences. While some areas of the lake may have debris or other objects on the bottom, it’s important to note that disturbing or removing objects from the lake’s bottom can have negative ecological impacts and may also be illegal.

25 Quirky Facts That Make Us Love The Ozarks Even More

Posted: October 13, 2023 | Last updated: March 30, 2024

The final season of Netflix's hit show Ozark aired last year, and many viewers might be wondering what the series' setting has to offer in real life. Most don’t know much about this relatively remote part of the United States, that's filled with natural wonders, opportunities for recreation and relaxation and a few quirks along the way too. Here are a few facts to help you to better get to know this beautiful part of the country.

Welcome to the Ozarks

The Ozarks aren’t centered around a specific city or nature reserve – the name actually refers to a large mountain range in the south-central United States. The mountains span portions of five states: Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Kansas, with the largest portion in Missouri, although the actual boundaries are vague. All in all, the range occupies about 50,000 square miles (130,000sq km).

Unlike many oddly-named places in the US, the name Ozark isn’t a reference to an early colonialist’s surname, although its roots are in colonialism. It’s believed to be a misspelling of the words Aux Arc, which was a French trading post in the area in the 1700s. The phase translates to “with bows”, likely a reference to the Quapaw people, who were also known as the Bow Indians. Either way, there’s still a campground on the Lake of the Ozarks that bears the Aux Arc name.

There aren’t a lot of mountains in the middle part of the United States – those “flyover” states are shockingly flat. The Ozark Mountains (paired with the adjacent Ouachita Mountains) are the only rough ‘n’ rugged range between the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains. If you take a look at a topographical map (or literally fly across the country), you’ll see that there’s a lot of smooth plains in between those ranges.

While the Ozarks might not get the same fanfare as the majestic Appalachians or the incredibly tall Rockies, the range does have some pretty impressive peaks. Many of the mountains in the Boston section of the Ozark range (which are actually all in Arkansas and nowhere near Boston) are more than 2,000-feet (600m) high and the famed Taum Sauk Mountain in Missouri is a mighty 1,772-feet (540m) high.

Love this?
The Ozarks region is as famous for the Lake of the Ozarks as it is for the mountains that the area is named after, largely because of the sheer size of that particular body of water. Fisherman nets 164-pound fish in Lake of Ozarks

Chad Williams of Olathe, Kan., caught a world record 164-pound, 13-ounce paddlefish. Williams was on his first snagging trip March 17 when he reeled in the fish at the Lake of the Ozarks.

ST. LOUIS — A fisherman on the Lake of the Ozarks brought ashore a world-record paddlefish March 17 that weighed more than 164 pounds — the biggest paddlefish ever caught and the largest fish of any kind in Missouri’s record books.

Chad Williams, of Olathe, Kan., hooked the monster fish around 8:30 a.m., on an outing chartered by Smith’s Fishing Adventures, based out of Warsaw.

“As soon as it hit the boat, everybody’s jaws dropped,” said Jason Smith, who runs Smith’s Fishing Adventures. “It was an epic day for all of us.”

The fish measured just over 62 inches from its eye to the fork of its tail and was caught in a roughly 10-minute tussle, said Smith, the boat captain — who called state officials to tell them about the catch. After coming ashore, the fish was weighed on a certified scale at a butcher shop in the town of Montreal, where Missouri Department of Conservation personnel met the group from the boat.

“I could not believe my eyes when I actually saw it person,” said Samantha Clary, a fisheries biologist from MDC, who was there.

Paddlefish are aquatic oddities in the modern age, unlike any other fish that’s still swimming — ancient relics that are considered a “living dinosaur” of the fish world, said Andrew Branson, a fisheries programs specialist for MDC. They look almost like swordfish at the front, with a long, protruding, paddle-shaped rostrum. And like sharks, they consist largely of cartilage and are covered in scale-less skin except for an area near the tail.

They are found throughout regional stretches of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as well as their tributaries, and have earned recognition as Missouri’s “official state aquatic animal.” (They are not, however, Missouri’s state fish — a distinction that belongs to the channel catfish.)

In Missouri’s records, the enormous specimen blew any competition out of the water — coming in 24 pounds heavier than any other recorded fish in state history. The previous record was a 140-pound paddlefish caught in 2022. And those top paddlefish have tipped the scales more than other fish caught in the state. For comparison, a Florissant man landed the largest blue catfish in Missouri’s history, at 130 pounds — which was a world record at the time it was caught in 2010.

Paddlefish, also called spoonbills, are prized for their size, uniqueness and even black-market caviar. They’re “filter-feeder” fish that primarily eat plankton, so they are not caught through traditional fishing methods with bait or lures. Instead, the fish are caught through snagging, when fishermen pull hooks through the water to snare them.

MDC said it was Williams’ first snagging trip when he hauled in the record fish. Williams could not be reached for comment Monday.

Williams’ catch holds the record for the world’s biggest paddlefish ever caught, surpassing one from Oklahoma by 13 ounces, according to MDC. And it dwarfed the paddlefish that Smith is accustomed to. Before Sunday, he said the biggest one he’d boated was 108 pounds, with keepers typically weighing between 40 and 70 pounds.

Not only did the paddlefish break the previous state record of 140 pounds, but it also broke the previous world record of 164 pounds.

"I’m honestly still processing this whole thing," Williams laughed. "Conservation Agent Tyler Brown was in disbelief it was my first time snagging. He said, ‘You don’t have to go out fishing ever again! Nothing can top this!’ and he’s probably right!"

Williams said he had the good fortune of being invited to snag with some friends for the beginning of this year's paddlefish snagging season. Snagging is a fishing technique that uses a sharp hook to pierce the flesh of a fish.

Shortly into the fishing trip, he hooked into something colossal.

"I was thinking I was extremely weak because it was taking so long to reel in," he recalled. "My body was aching."

After successfully getting the massive fish onto the boat, the group of fishing buddies were astounded to realize they were looking at a record-breaking catch.

The group rushed to meet Missouri wildlife officials at Three Brothers Meat Company in Montreal to weigh the fish on a certified scale to ensure its accuracy and legitimacy. By doing so, they could be confident in the weight of the fish and the fact that they had indeed made history .

According to the MDC, Williams' paddlefish was the second state-record catch made this year.

Williams and his wife decided to keep some paddlefish meat and gave the remaining to his fishing group. He intends to preserve the head through taxidermy.

In Missouri, state-record fish are acknowledged in two groups: pole-and-line and alternative methods, including snagging.

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.

Lake Pueblo State Park installs ‘exit only’ gates to let boaters leave after hours

"Exit only" gate at Lake Pueblo State Park.

PUEBLO, Colo. (CPW News Release) - Beginning April 1, boaters who remain on the water at Lake Pueblo State Park past gate closing times on the two boat ramps will not be prevented from leaving.

A new policy – and new gates – will allow after-hour departures, which have not been permitted since the rise of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) forced Colorado Parks and Wildlife to begin inspecting every boat that enters and leaves state-managed waters.

This winter, Lake Pueblo installed new gates on the south boat ramp that resemble large railroad-crossing guards. They are equipped with sensors – and spike strips – to allow the boaters to leave, but not enter the water after hours.

The change comes with new ANS inspection requirements that boaters will need to strictly follow.

“This is a response to our guests who like to fish and boat late into the night,” said Joe Stadterman, manager of CPW’s busiest park. “We are trying to accommodate them while maintaining the highest defense possible to prevent aquatic nuisance species from entering the lake.”

The new south ramp gates are becoming operational as Lake Pueblo ANS inspection stations shift from winter to springtime operating hours. Beginning April 1, south ramp gates will be open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The north ramp operating hours will be 5 a.m. to midnight.

Boats leaving after hours still must follow CPW’s “clean, drain, dry” ANS protocols. However, they will not receive a seal that designates them as clean. They may be required to go through the decontamination station before being allowed to re-enter the water.

In recent years, CPW has aggressively policed boats entering its waters to guard against the invasion of non-native zebra and quagga mussels, in particular.

“Our seasonal hours, combined with the new south ramp gate, give boaters more freedom to come and go at Lake Pueblo,” Stadterman said. “But we will not relax our ANS inspections as we continue to keep Lake Pueblo free of invasive zebra and quagga mussels.”

When ANS inspection stations are open, all trailered or motorized watercraft must be inspected by on-site staff prior to launching on the lake. CPW’s ANS protocols include inspecting watercraft before they enter state waters, decontaminating those with ANS attached, educating boat operators and ensuring that users clean, drain and dry watercraft.
