Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard is bringing the famous “Leopard Yachts” brand back to the market with a new, sporty and elegant 36-meter model.

Render #2 Leopard 36m

It is precisely this shipyard, located along the historic Canale dei Navicelli between Pisa and the Port of Livorno, that launched the last Leopard models and has now moved on to a shipbuilding project that favours the production of custom-made yachts .

The restart operation of the Leopard Yachts brand includes all the necessary investments to produce new lines of boats of different sizes. In fact, in addition to this first 36-meter model, a 24-meter and a 46-meter yacht are also being planned. Each project will be customized ad hoc on the customer, involving different skills and an heterogeneous work group, from engineers to naval architects, up to specialized craftsmen.

Italian designer Andrea Bacigalupo , a pupil of Paolo Caliari (who designed the brand’s very first model) who worked closely on many of the successful Leopard Yachts motor yachts is now the author of this new 36-meter superyacht. His project is devoted to enhancing the Italian spirit in the world, placing itself in continuity with what the previous owner had done: Leopard yachts are recognisable from a distance and appreciated by those who love the sea and want to sail fast. Relaunching a historic brand like Leopard is an impossible task if you don’t have in-depth nautical know-how: this is why Seven Stars has decided to take up this challenge. This is a fast 36-meter yacht which, completely open and airy, places the master cabin on the main deck and includes an important sun deck that is almost invisible from the sea: refined technology, high comfort and low consumption are the distinctive features of the project.

“ We are proud of this investment that comes from the common will of a team of entrepreneurs to revive a historic brand of Italian nautical science and Made in Italy – states Davide Mugnaini, CEO and Partner of Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard – Leopard Yachts intends to meet the needs of the best ship owners on the market, thanks to its design and production excellence, and its attention to every detail. Having a new Leopard will be a privilege, an experience that will be unique from the moment of the purchase choice”.

Leopard Yachts, an iconic Italian brand since the early seventies, has been re-launched by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard near Pisa. Andrea Bacigalupo, one of Leopard’s original naval architects, has designed the new range’s streamlined hull. The interior and additions on each individual 36m yacht are fully customisable, with Monaco brokers TWW Yachts overseeing contracts and construction.    Davide Mugnaini, CEO of Seven Stars Marina and Shipyard, told SuperyachtNews , “We are very much focused on retaining the exclusivity of Leopard Yachts. We will be building one, two… maybe three yachts every year, and every boat will be tailor made and crafted to suit the needs of the owner… We are bringing with us everything from the old brand, while at the same time, we are changing and adapting everything to the future. The iconic lines, the best engineering, as well as the high performance and speed are all main features of our future strategy.” Following on from Mugnainis’ comments, brand manager Carlo Pittis said,

“Simply taking the name and using it would be easy. What we plan to do is enhance and reinvigorate the very best aspects of Leopard to give the client something really special.”

The fruitful history of Leopard Yachts began in 1907 when the Picchiotti family first established the Giuseppe Picchiotti e Figli shipyard. However, it wasn’t until 1973 when the Picchiotti family, based in Italy’s Tuscany coast, collaborated with naval architect Paolo Caliari to create the first Leopard Yacht. These sleek motor yachts were celebrated for their speed, reliability, comfort and elegance. From 2000, Leopard Yachts' newest models were constructed at Tombolo Shipyard, located on the Canale dei Navicelli between Pisa and Livorno.

In 2019, Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard acquired Tombolo Shipyard. The company's CEO Davide Mugnaini affirmed his long-held fascination with Leopard Yachts. “Seven Stars specialises in creating tailor-made yachts for demanding owners,” Mugnaini explained. “But with Leopard, the importance in relaunching a renowned Italian brand made the challenge even more interesting.”   Mugnaini researched Leopard Yachts’ compelling backstory, with a view to reviving the legendary brand. He travelled to Genoa to meet Andre Bacigalupo, Caliari's student and Leopard’s designer since 2000. To his delight, Mugnaini found that Bacigalupo had continued to perfect his Leopard Yacht designs and drawings as a private passion.

“We had a mutual respect for Leopard’s history,” stated Mugnaini. “Combined with Seven Stars’ technical know-how, it has made our collaboration on the relaunch of Leopard Yachts an act of love.”

The newly-revived range of Leopard Yachts will be produced in the Tombolo shipyard by Seven Stars, where Leopards have historically been built. The first 36m will be ready to hit the water just 24 months after signing. This model is said to boast contemporary interiors and more efficiency than the original.

MONACO, August 4, 2021 (Newswire.com) - Leopard Yachts , the iconic Italian brand since the 1970s, has been re-launched by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard near Pisa. Andre Bacigalupo, one of Leopard's original naval architects, has designed the new range's streamlined hull. Contracts and construction will be overseen on the owner's behalf by experienced Monaco brokers TWW Yachts .

In 1973, the Picchiotti family, based on Italy's Tuscany coast, collaborated with naval architect Paolo Caliari to create the first Leopard Yacht. Mugnaini researched Leopard Yachts' compelling backstory, with a view to reviving the legendary brand. He met Andre Bacigalupo, Caliari's student and Leopard's designer from 2000 onwards. Mugnaini found that Bacigalupo had continued to perfect his Leopard Yacht designs and drawings as a private passion. "We had a mutual respect for Leopard's history," continues Mugnaini. "Combined with Seven Stars' technical know-how, it has made our collaboration on the relaunch of Leopard Yachts an act of love."

The first 36m will be ready to hit the water just 24 months after signing. Connoisseurs of the Italian brand's history will recognize its racing lines and nuanced form. Yet this model boasts contemporary interiors and is more efficient than the original.

Carlo Pittis, Brand Manager of Leopard Yachts, explains, "No Leopard constructed by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard will be identical. Our approach is truly artisanal and tailor-made. New owners have a blank canvas, whether they wish to install a Jacuzzi or completely redesign the yacht's interior spaces."

Customization is possible, says CEO Davide Mugnaini. "The degree of personalization is limited only by the owner's imagination. Our clients can be assisted by interior experts Nauta Design, with whom we collaborate closely. In terms of elements within the yacht, Seven Stars is renowned for its obsessive attention to detail and tenacity in sourcing any material or accoutrement."

TWW Yachts is acting as a central agent for Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard and Leopard Yachts. TWW will offer owners comprehensive support during the construction and customization of their yacht as well as overseeing management and maintenance of the yacht once completed.

Seven Stars 1200x630

Leopard Yachts have long been the yacht of choice for owners who require high tempo cruising, but refuse to sacrifice space. "The new range boasts dimensions and elements that are not found in other yachts of this size and type,” explains Pittis. “For example, the large owner's cabin on the main deck, or the spacious beach club aft.” The Leopard’s speeds of up to 42 knots allow for fast point-to-point voyages. Making it ideal for a weekend cruise from Monaco to Sardinia, from Miami to The Bahamas, or exploring the 250 or more islands off Hong Kong.

When a purchase decision has been made, the pleasure of customisation begins. Any addition is possible, says Mugnaini. “The degree of personalisation is limited only by the owner’s imagination. Our clients can be assisted by interior experts Nauta Design, with whom we collaborate closely. In terms of elements within the yacht, Seven Stars is renowned for its obsessive attention to detail and tenacity in sourcing any material or accoutrement.”

The forthcoming 24m and the 46m Leopard Yachts afford equally attractive options for potential owners. The former will be sporty and compact, while the latter’s incredible spaces will offer unparalleled comfort. Although each launch will pair cutting-edge design with technological solutions, Leopard Yachts’ unique lines will be immediately recognisable.    TWW Yachts is acting as a worldwide central agent for Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard and Leopard Yachts. As experienced yacht brokers based in Monaco, TWW will offer owners comprehensive support during the construction and customisation of their yacht. They also offer the option of overseeing management and maintenance of the yacht once the new owners take possession.

WHERE OUR SAILBOAT WAS BORN (Catamaran Factory Tour)

We live and travel about the world on a South African built catamaran.  So, we couldn’t come to South Africa and not see where our boat was born!

We think of our boat Curiosity as an old friend.  She (because I can’t stand to say something as insignificant as “it”) isn’t alive by scientific standards and yet we treat her with almost human regard.

Which seems absurd…but when have we humans ever been a sensical species?

It makes sense that we’re drawn to other living things but where does this attachment to the inanimate come from?

We give our vessels (rolling or floating) names and personalities.  They become prominent characters in the story of our lives and for the unsedentary few, it’s also the place we call home.

We’ve lived aboard Curiosity for four years now and she’s taken us almost halfway around the world.  In that time, we’ve gotten to know each other intimately.  Ohhh, if these hulls could talk…the expletives she could spew!

And, like any hard-earned relationship, we love her more with each passing nautical mile.  But we know her as the sailboat she is now…our fifteen-year-old catamaran with more than a few nicks in her fiberglass (that we still need to patch up, sorry about that ol’ girl).

So naturally, when we had the opportunity to see where she was born, we didn’t even blink!

Not only do we stand in the exact spot Curiosity was made, we get a “hands-on” look at how Robertson and Caine builds Leopard catamarans today.

After our road trip with Tom and our visits to Vision Yachts and St. Francis Marine , we thought we had an idea of what to expect…but wow…it was soooo different.

Our respect for boat building, in general, has gone up tenfold but the differences in semi-custom boutique builders vs production catamaran builders are stark.

You simply can’t compare the two worlds.  The same as you wouldn’t compare Cape Town to Knysna.  One is a bustling metropolis and the other is a quaint resort town.

We walked away with so much new information swirling around in our heads that we still haven’t processed. But, there were a few things that really stuck with us.

Major Takeaways

The relationship between employer and employee.  We certainly noticed this at the other factories too, so this is a continuing theme.  But Johan said something to me during our tour. I can still hear his voice in my head and feel the compassion in his eyes, “Having a job in South Africa is a privilege” .  He said it as both an employer and an employee.

Life in Africa is no cakewalk and their history speaks for itself.  But the people are some of the most vivacious we’ve ever encountered.  The woman singing at the end is a perfect example.  People weren’t grumpy they had to work; they were happy to be working.

Or, perhaps the line manager summed it up best, “you have to have a connection with your people….if you love what you are doing, you never work a day in your life” .

On-Site Health Clinics

Robertson & Caine understands the work the employees are doing is physical and comes with health risks. They also employ over 1,800 people!   So making sure everyone is safe and healthy was an ongoing theme.   Plus, healthy workers equal steady production.

They have on-site health clinics with mandatory physical and respiratory checkups.  If someone isn’t adhering to proper safety (like wearing a respirator when working with resin) then their health checkup will show it.

Steady Production

Robertson & Caine pumps out about 200 boats a year and they increase production almost every year.  What started out as one small factory has grown to six locations in Cape Town.  From 1997-2019 they delivered 2,065 catamarans .

They are constantly improving their workflow and were implementing new modular stations into their production lines, even during our tour.

Boats move on the line every four days and it takes approximately 60 days from layup to splash to build a Leopard 45 catamaran. Then the cats get loaded on a freighter and shipped around the world…but a few are commissioned and picked up by the owners in Cape Town! Now that would be an exciting first sail: Crossing the Atlantic.

Clarification…

Because I know it can get confusing: Robertson & Caine is the boat builder and Leopard is the brand of our sailboat. One more little confusing bit: R & C also builds Moorings catamarans, which is the charter version of the Leopard cats. Confused yet?!?

🙏 A HUGE THANKS TO

We had a blast seeing where CURIOSITY was built, but we couldn’t have done it without a little help. Thanks to Marcel and the Robertson & Caine crew for spending soo many hours with us at the factories. Thanks to Leopard for hosting us and Rob at nautique.tv for letting us borrow the factory time-lapse of the Leopard 40 flipping. And a special shout out to all the factory workers that graced us with a smile, a wave or a song…you give the factory and the boats life!

And of course: YOU! Thank you!  Each week you show up and make this all possible.  Thanks for reading, watching, commenting, and sharing.  If you like what you see, there are lots of FREE ways you can show your support .

Hello there! I honestly don’t know what to say, so I am going to tell you a bunch of random facts instead. I'm a fish eating vegetarian who hates spiders and loves snakes. I almost never took vacations growing up. I wanted to be Pippi Longstocking (still do). I misspell about every other word I write and still struggle with grammar. I love splurging on a good high tea (which is really hard to find these days). And whatever you do, don’t tell me I can’t do something, because then I'll HAVE to do it!

Loved the tours, but especially the singing! Special people, as you are as well! Thank you!

My question to the design team would have been; do you own a cat? I’ve owned boats and RV’s and every so often wonder if the designer ever spent a night in the vessel. Why would they put a door here or why would they put a ? there. Even Mary was complaining about something that seemed pretty “useless” on her van as i recall from your travel video with her. Have you ever wondered about some physical aspect on Curiosity that you would change if you could?

' src=

Curious Minion

It’s a good question, and one that many boat and RV owners ask themselves on a daily basis. Why is there no shoe storage built in by the door? Why is there no place for dirty clothes? Things you don’t think about until you live in a tiny space. But it’s a battle between what’s required, what’s practical, & what’s desired. Nikki and Jason had some thoughts on this when Fleetwood gave them the opportunity to help design their Bounder. Check these vids out for insight into the battle: https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/story-behind-our-rv-design and https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/resurrecting-dinosaurs-wynn-custom-rv Curious Minion

Just a thought about spelling and grammar.. the very best way to master it is to simply READ. Read as much as you can, as often as you can. You don’t have to do anything else and it will build your skills like crazy. Of course, it hasn’t hindered you at all, you are doing just fine, so feel free to ignore my advice. =)

' src=

We’d love to have extra time to sit and read, but that’s just not in the cards at this point in our lives…unless it’s a user manual on how to repair boat parts 🤣

' src=

Well I have seen you pull off some stuff that, from the curb, I would have never thought you could

' src=

How cool was that. Getting to see the birth mama up close and personal and the sweet song at the end simply made this the best. Now I’d love to own a Leopard just because I know the heart and soul that is put into the craft. It really is the best sales video made for their boats. Can’t wait to get you back on the water. Cheers

Tremendous video – as always. So interesting to see how and where Curiosity was ‘conceived’. Stay safe and well and I’m really looking forward to your next video. Thx for sharing this adventure with us all. 💖⛵️🙏

Love the fact that you also spoke with, interviewed and heard from those craft people building the boats. And the voice of the lady in the end (agreed with John Schretlen) – Wow. Best ending ever.

' src=

That was our my fave moment too! She was the icing on the cake.

' src=

Thank you so much for your content! You are my binge-watching choice during this lockdown. I just became a patron because I value what you do! Hope you get back to your boat soon!

are you building a new boat soon or thinking about buying a new one soon

There are no plans for a new Curiosity. Unless you’re buying haha! Curious Minion

Two comments: I wonder what the difference is between the Mooring Cats and the regular production boats?

Secondly, it is quite remarkable that Robertson & Caine have been able to weather the storm of political discourse in South Africa and retain their large factory. The happy employee’s are a credit to their management style and commentment to a quality product.

That is a good question. I know the layout is part of it as well as the equipment (sails, running rigging) can be different but I too wonder what else. Next time I am at a boat show I will have to ask that question.

John Schmidt

How are the boats delivered all around the globe? Do they have to hire people to sail them to the retailers or does every owner have to fly to South Africa to pick up or what?

All of the Leopards (like our Curiosity) used to be sailed over to their buyers. Which was a testament to their blue water capabilities but now most are put on a big ship for delivery. Simply because of how efficient shipping has become and it saves the extra wear on the vessel. And some people choose to take delivery in South Africa and sail them off themselves.

' src=

Wow! What an incredible day for you! I was thinking a few tears may spew! Did this make you want a new boat? New is nice even when you have had so many great times together!

Loved the ladies singing! ❤️

It was quite the experience! No tears but more than a few giddy moments and if I would have had a bigger bag…I would have been tempted to try and snag a few new parts for Curiosity.

' src=

Love watching you guys! I’m a South African, currently living in London and supposed to be visiting my family in Durban but alas couldn’t get home in time so it’s been great watching your videos and seeing a bit of home…. you guys are my favourite couple to watch out of all the sailing videos out there. Looking forward to seeing Cape Town soon in your next video. Hope all okay in Tonga 🙂

' src=

Very interesting. Nice to see the process from the design concept to the finished product. A lot of great craftsmanship. Stay safe Nikki and Jason, I hope you’re reunited with your own home, Curiosity, sooner rather than later.

' src=

Steve Tannenbaum

Did you ask the builders about the problems you’ve had with the windows on Curiosity?

We had reached out to them about that at the time. Unfortunately, our boat is old and an old design so they don’t make parts for it…including those windows. We can have them custom made and will when we get to New Zealand or Australia.

' src=

JOHN SCHRETLEN

The last 50 seconds of this video was the best ending of any video you have ever done. It really closed out the factory tour with the best feeling of South Africa; you could not have done any better.

That was such a moment! I couldn’t possibly love South African women anymore. They are beautiful inside and out and those voices…brings tears to my eyes and joy to my soul!

The Arno shipyard started building pleasure boats in the 1960s after having spent decades building commercial and military vessels.

Thus he passes the experience of the shipwrights and carpenters who had worked with the shipyard during its growth. From the first wooden Leopard, born in 1973, followed a long list of boats, until, on August 2, 1984, the first fiberglass Leopard was launched, the LEOPARD SPORT 19 whose prototype was made of aluminum.

From here on a series of successful boats worldwide.

Modern Leopard Yachts is an extensive manufacturing facility, equipped by the latest trends in yacht building technologies, allowing it to work on the hardest and biggest projects there are. Having been making custom ordered yachts for over than 40 years, the company has become well known among the luxury yacht devotees.

Every Leopard Mega Yacht is made following the latest building technologies, possesses individual design and technical features. Each and every one of them deserves to be judged at the best boating shows of the world.

New Leopard 36m

where are leopard yachts made

Seven Stars revives iconic Made in Italy brand Leopard Yachts with customised 36m range.

New Leopard 36m – Leopard Yachts , an iconic Italian brand since the 1970s,  has been re-launched  by  Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard  near Pisa.  Andre Bacigalupo , one of  Leopard’s original naval architects,  has designed the new range’s streamlined hull.  The interior and additions on each individual 36m yacht are completely customisable . Contracts and construction will be overseen on an owner’s behalf by experienced Monaco brokers  TWW Yachts .

In 1973, the  Picchiotti family,  based on Italy’s Tuscany coast, collaborated with naval architect Paolo Caliari to create the first Leopard Yacht.  These sleek motor yachts  were celebrated for their speed, reliability, comfort and elegance.  From 2000, Leopard Yachts’ newest models were constructed at Tombolo Shipyard , located on the Canale dei Navicelli between Pisa and Livorno.

In 2019, Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard acquired Tombolo Shipyard.   The company’s CEO Davide Mugnaini  affirms his long-held fascination with Leopard Yachts. “Seven Stars specialises in creating tailor-made yachts for demanding owners,” Mugnaini explains. “But with  Leopard, the importance in relaunching a renowned Italian brand made the challenge even more interesting .”

Mugnaini researched Leopard Yachts’ compelling backstory, with a view to reviving the legendary brand. He travelled to Genoa to meet Andre Bacigalupo, Caliari’s student and Leopard’s designer from 2000 onwards. To his delight,  Mugnaini found that Bacigalupo had continued to perfect his Leopard Yacht designs and drawings as a private passion . “We had a mutual respect for Leopard’s history,” continues Mugnaini. “ Combined with Seven Stars’ technical know-how, it has made our collaboration on the relaunch of Leopard Yachts an act of love .”

The  newly-revived range of Leopard Yachts will be produced in the Tombolo shipyard by Seven Stars , where Leopards have historically been built .  The first 36m  will be ready to hit the water just  24 months after signing . Connoisseurs of the Italian brand’s history will recognise its racing lines and nuanced form. Yet this model boasts contemporary interiors and is more efficient than the original. Carlo Pittis, Brand Manager of Leopard Yachts , explains the customisation process. “ No Leopard constructed by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard will be identical . Our approach is truly artisanal and tailor-made. Potential owners are afforded a blank canvas,  whether they wish to install a Jacuzzi or completely redesign the yacht’s interior spaces .” Leopard Yachts have long been the yacht of choice for owners who require  high tempo cruising , but refuse to sacrifice space. “The new range boasts dimensions and elements that are not found in other yachts of this size and type,” explains Pittis. “For example,  the large owner’s cabin  on the main deck, or the  spacious Beach Club aft .” The Leopard’s  speeds of up to 42 knots  allow for fast point-to-point voyages. Making it ideal for a  weekend cruise from Monaco to Sardinia,  from Miami to The Bahamas, or  exploring the 250 or more islands off Hong Kong.

When a purchase decision has been made, the pleasure of customisation begins. Any addition is possible, says CEO Davide Mugnaini. “ The degree of personalisation is limited only by the owner’s imagination . Our clients can be assisted by   interior experts Nauta Design , with whom we collaborate closely. In terms of elements within the yacht, Seven Stars is renowned for its obsessive attention to detail and tenacity in sourcing any material or accoutrement.”   The  forthcoming 24m and the 46m Leopard Yachts  afford equally attractive options for potential owners. The former will be sporty and compact, while the latter’s incredible spaces will offer unparalleled comfort. Although each launch will pair cutting-edge design with technological solutions,  Leopard Yachts’ unique lines will be immediately recognisable .

TWW Yachts  is acting as a worldwide central agent for Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard and Leopard Yachts. As  experienced yacht brokers based in Monaco , TWW will offer owners comprehensive support during the construction and customisation of their yacht. They also offer the option of overseeing management and maintenance of the yacht once the new owners take possession.

Leopard 42 Boat Review

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: July 23, 2021

Mick Jagger was not singing about boat tests and wind speeds when he belted out the title lyrics to the classic Rolling Stones tune “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Far too often during many years of conducting sea trials on new boats—when you’re locked into a tight, non negotiable schedule for getting on the water—I’ve shown up just in time for a languid spell of very light air or, even worse, zippo breeze whatsoever. Definitely not what you want.

But there are also those lucky afternoons when you get what’s required for a sweet sail. Which pretty much describes the conditions this past spring when I rolled into a marina near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a test run aboard the new Leopard 42 catamaran , and was greeted by windswept palm trees and a stiff 20- to 25-knot easterly whipping up whitecaps on the deep blue Atlantic.

What’s the line, “When you try sometimes…you get what you need”? Exactly. And in this instance, then some.

Generally speaking, cruising cats are different than their spindly racing siblings: more tankage, more machinery, more furniture, more stuff. Which means they don’t maximize sailing performance in lighter conditions (nor are they attempting to…that’s why they’re cruising boats). But give a well-designed, well-built cat with liveaboard capabilities some legitimate air pressure to play with, and the results can be eye-popping. (Or not, frankly. Lots of wind can be too much for some lesser vessels.) Which was most certainly the case with the latest Leopard under sail in the double-digit gusts. Where she thrived.

Naval architect Alex Simonis—based near the wild, windy waters off Cape Town, South Africa—is the longtime designer of Leopard cats, and a man who relishes drafting solid boats that sail and perform exceedingly well (for proof, have another look at this month’s cover shot of a Leopard 42 hauling the mail in the shadow of iconic Table Mountain). His willing partners in this crime of nautical passion are the artisans at Robertson & Caine, the boatyard that in 2022 will build approximately 120 to 130 sailing cats ranging in size from 42 to 50 feet. It’s true that the company could probably expand production based on the current and ongoing demand for Leopards, but that would run counter to the builder’s very ethos: Quality is the aim here, not quantity.

As we motored out of the inlets and into the open sea for the trials, I’ll admit that I was so relishing the sail that it never occurred to me to jot down the relevant statistics—speed, high and low RPM, etc.—for the twin 45 hp Yanmar diesels. My bad. Let’s just say we got out there smoothly and quickly.

Leopard was conducting a mini boat show at its docks in Dania Beach that upcoming weekend, so there was an all-star crew of sailmakers and company reps aboard, including Franck Bauguil, an executive at travel conglomerate Travelopia, whose brands include the privately owned Leopards, and chartering giants Sunsail and the Moorings, and whose duties include product development—a fancy title that actually means he spends a lot of time hanging with Simonis while sailing around and dreaming up cool boats. As we powered into the chop, I mentioned something about a reef, and Bauguil gave me a sidelong look of disappointment, like a resigned parent inspecting a horrible report card. Full hoist it was. As the full-battened, deeply roached, square-topped mainsail was raised, I had a brief thought about singer/songwriter Cat Power, for it was abundantly clear what was powering this darn cat.

It’s interesting to note the difference between the Leopard’s sail plan and, say, the current approach from one of the big French production-cat builders like Lagoon. In recent years, Lagoon, as a brand, has made a conscious decision to slide the entire rig aft, depending more on an expansive foretriangle for drive and grunt, and taming the entire arrangement with a self-tacking headsail. With the Leopards, including the 42, the rig remains comparably forward, and it’s the mainsail, with a relatively longer boom than a Lagoon, that supplies the muscle (we’re talking basically a low-aspect main and rig on a Leopard versus a high-aspect one on the Lagoon), aided and abetted by an overlapping 110 percent headsail that’s tacked like a traditional sailboat. I honestly can’t say if there’s a right or wrong answer here, but it’s fascinating to recognize and compare the differing philosophies.

Back in the real world, I’d ascended the four steps to the starboard helm station, which is where you’ll find the wheel on every Leopard; in such matters, these guys are unabashed creatures of habit. The surrounding view was expansive but, more pertinently, within arm’s length I had everything—and I mean everything —required to sail and command the boat: a trio of electric winches (two of which are standard), mainsheet and jib sheets and rope clutches, a nifty traveler setup, dual engine controls, chart plotter and related sailing instruments, and so on. For the most part, across the board, catamaran designers these days lay out decks with the notion and objective that it takes only one sharp sailor to run the whole bloody show, and the Leopard 42 certainly perfects that concept.

After motoring off the coast for sea room, we hardened up to a close reach, and matters became extremely interesting, not to mention noisy and blowy. Which was great. The cat trucked along at a solid 8.5 knots, but what struck me the most was how solid and steadfast she felt as she cleaved through the chop; the sensation of the twin hulls of a fine cat in exquisite balance really does feel like a freight train on its rails.

But the real fun happens when you crack off and free up the wind angle, and the Leopard leaped at the course change and eased sheets, flirting with 10 knots on a screaming reach. We did have a bit of a fire drill when a blast of wind caught the corner of the furled code zero—which then, of course, started to totally unfurl—and I got my day’s cardio helping drop and corral the beast on the trampolines. Extremely good times.

Back at the dock, all systems once again calm and shipshape, I had a chance to wander the decks and interior. The look and feel of the features and accoutrements are totally modern, as in ultra-contemporary (more than once in my notebook the word “angular” appears). The profile is enhanced by tinted, continuous side windows in the hull, and the coach roof segues into the hard Bimini that’s carried aft and canopies the cockpit. Up top—on the penthouse, so to speak—there’s an inviting lounge space. There’s a marvelous afterdeck and swim platform, features for which I have an extremely soft spot. The cockpit has a fine-dining area to port, opposite the helm.

The galley is forward in the roomy central cabin, with the dining table aft to port. The 42 doesn’t have the forward cockpit employed on larger models, but there is a watertight front doovate owner’s cabin to starboard (with desk, vanity, flat-screen TV, huge head, etc.) and a pair of staterooms to port, but you can spec out the interior in multiple ways: tr that leads to a pair of sun lounges, the tramps, and an optional fixed bowsprit if you’re going with the performance package that includes the code zero. Our test boat had the pretty awesome private owner’s cabin to starboard (with desk, vanity, flat-screen TV, huge head, etc.) and a pair of staterooms to port, but you can spec out the interior in multiple ways: three or four cabins, three or four heads, six or eight berths, three or four showers. The four-cabin, four-head configuration is likely what you’ll find if you charter one; about half the production run is bound for the bareboat fleets.

The Leopard 42 replaces the Leopard 40 in the brand’s quiver, and is certainly a more substantial ride in every notable way. The only problem, really, is that as the world emerges from these pandemic times, they’re going fast. The 42 might be quick, but if you want one, you need to be even quicker.

Powering Across the Atlantic on a Leopard 46 Powercat

where are leopard yachts made

There are thousands of stories out there about crossing oceans under sail. But transiting a long stretch of the ocean under power? That's a different adventure.

Delivering a Leopard 46 Powercat

Leopard agent and delivery captain Guilherme Kodja had a challenge. A new Leopard 46 Powercat needed delivery from the Robertson & Caine yard in South Africa to a buyer in Brazil, and an ocean lay in the way. Captain Kodja started planning and, ten months later, set out for a month-long, 4,453 nautical mile (nm) trek across the South Atlantic with three crew.

Delivering a power yacht has similarities and differences from delivering a sailing vessel. Fuel is the priority. You need a lot, and there's no guarantee you'll get good quality fuel once you leave mainland ports.

Weather is a concern, but your criteria are a little different. "Sea state is more important than wind direction," says Captain Kodja. "We can travel a more direct route because there's no tacking."

The Route and Plan

This won't be a non-stop trip. At a cruising speed of 6.8 knots, the Leopard 46 used just over two gallons (eight liters) of fuel per hour. With a built-in diesel tankage of over 400 gallons (1,852 liters), the Leopard 46 Power Cat has a standard range of more than 1,500 nautical miles.

Like sailing yachts, wind and current influence a powered delivery, even if the priorities differ. "We headed north for better wind and current," said Kodja. "It's a longer distance, but faster and more comfortable." And the need for more fuel somewhere along the way means he can't easily take a more southern route.

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T165814.111

Leg One - Cape Town to Luderitz, Namibia

The first step was a coast-hugging trip up the African coast. This 502-nautical-mile trip took about three days. The goal was to top-up fuel and provisions while waiting for a good weather window. Captain Kodja noted that "a powering boat pitches more than a sailing, so choosing a good window is important."

Leg Two - Luderitz to St. Helena

Though St. Helena lies north of Itajai, Brazil, their ultimate destination, it's a popular stopping point for yachts crossing the Atlantic. It's not just that the northerly route is more comfortable; there are few places to the south to stop. This 1,338nm leg took eight days of motoring and used 424 gallons (1,926 liters) of fuel. This was the last stop to refuel for the rest of the trip.

Leg Three - St. Helena to Martin Vaz Island and Trinidade

The Martin Vaz and Trinidade islands are the easternmost possessions of Brazil, and the crew made a brief stop there to perform the 500-hour service on the engines. This was another long leg at 8 1/2 days, covering 1,385 miles. It was a welcome return to Brazilian waters after a long time at sea.

Leg Four - Martin Vaz Island/Trinidade to Cabo Frio

Rio de Janeiro was not in the plan. The closest the crew ventured was nearby Cabo Frio. It's there, after four and a half days and 725 nm of motoring from Martin Vaz Island, they had some exciting encounters with busy shipping traffic headed into Rio and a military exercise. They ducked into Cabo Frio to miss some weather and only stayed overnight.

Leg Five - Cabo Frio to Itajai

The final sprint to the yacht's new home was along the coast of Brazil. This three-day coastal passage covered another 465 nm of water before completing the trip.

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T165941.541

Fuel, Engines, and No Problems

Captain Kodja solved the fuel problems by carrying external tanks. It took twenty-eight five-and-a-half gallon (25L) jerry cans and five fifty-five gallon (250L) drums. These were latched to the deck and cockpit where they could fit.

"Refueling wasn't a problem," Kodja said. "We'd look at the weather and find a good window of calm. With an electric pump, it worked easily."

"The engines ran like a Swiss clock," he added. "Quiet and smooth, we usually couldn't hear them from the forward cockpit."

As far as other problems go, the maiden voyage of this Leopard 46 came off with no significant hitches - a testament to Leopard quality out of the factory. "We had a hose work loose; we had to tighten a few screws," the captain said. "Nothing, really."

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T170210.806

Weather, Wildlife, and Warships

In a month at sea, they avoided dramatic weather. By watching the weather and picking good windows, they made out well. And along the way, they saw spectacular wildlife.

"We stayed south, below the humpback whale migration," said Kodja. One thing they did not want to do was hit a whale. But they did see some of those fantastic creatures. Close to Brazil, they spotted dozens of whales at once. Other sightings included rare porpoises and countless sea birds.

Another surprise was sailing into a multinational naval exercise off the coast of Brazil. The crew expected lots of shipping traffic off Rio, but they were surprised to find a naval fleet off Cabo Frio. The captain spent the last twenty miles in VHF contact with U.S. warships talking about positions and maneuvering plans.

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T170032.392

Smooth Start for a Happy Owner

The trip is documented in a series of videos , with some stunning sights and marine life. Captain Kodja and his crew made the delivery of a lifetime and put the boat through her paces. And the Leopard 46 showed off her build quality and capability, delivering a flawless performance on a demanding delivery.

"We brought the boat back for the Rio boat show," Kodja said. "Even after the 210nm delivery to the show, it took almost nothing to get this boat looking perfect."

Officials say a boat carrying 16 people sunk in a canal in northern France, ITV News Reporter Sam Holder has the latest

A seven-year-old girl has died after a migrant boat capsized in northern France.

Officials say the boat was carrying 16 people when it sank in the Canal de L'Aa in Watten, around 20 miles from Calais.

She had been travelling with her pregnant mother, three siblings and father, according to local officials - who confirmed surviving family members were all taken to hospital in Dunkirk.

Police and firefighters were alerted to the sinking boat by a walker.

Bertrand Gaume, prefect of the Hauts-de-France region, stated that the boat was "probably stolen" and not large enough to carry the amount of people onboard.

Local authorities confirmed the vessel was also carrying a couple, two men, and six young children.

This week’s Home Office figures showed more than 2,000 migrants have arrived in the UK so far this year after crossing the strait between England and France.

The number of Channel arrivals is 32% lower than the total recorded this time last year (2,953) but 49% higher than the total at this stage in 2022 (1,482).

Some 29,437 migrants arrived in the UK after making the crossing in 2023, down 36% on a record 45,774 arrivals in 2022.

The Home Office said there were no new arrivals on Tuesday or Monday this week, but 290 asylum seekers arrived across five boats last Sunday.

Home Secretary James Cleverly was in the US this week where he made a speech focused on tackling unauthorised migration.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made stopping the boats one of his top five pledges to the electorate in January last year.

Jamie lynn spears makes no mention of christina aguilera in vegas recap, jamie lynn spears no mention of xtina in vegas recap ... appeasing sister britney, 103 3/4/2024 3:31 pm pt.

Jamie Lynn Spears may have realized she'd be pissing off her sister, Britney Spears , by showing off her Christina Aguilera residency drop-in ... so, she made sure not to in a recap.

Brit's famous younger sibling shared a series of sweet memories from her Sin City getaway over the weekend -- where she was enjoying a bachelorette party with a solid group of ladies. Lots of highlights in her IG post ... but interestingly, none capturing Xtina onstage.

Take a look at some of Jamie Lynn's standout snaps from the getaway -- she made sure to point out they hit up a 'Magic Mike Live' show .. and just hitting the town in general.

Yet, Brit's kid sis noticeably didn't post a single pic/vid from Christina's performance at the Voltaire at the Venetian in Vegas. In fact ... Jamie Lynn said her friend -- who is set to get married soon -- and the male stripper show were the only things worth leaving her kids for.

Of course ... there are a lot of complicated dynamics at play here -- which could have a role in Jamie Lynn's social media choices. BS and CA may go all the way back to the Mickey Mouse Club -- but fans have pitted the pop princesses against each other for decades.

It's not just fans though ... Britney and Christina have had rumored beef as well, for realsies. Whether any of that animosity has carried over into the 2020s is anyone's guess -- but it would appear Jamie Lynn was mindful of their history in going through her Vegas vacay.

On its face, you could argue JLS was just trying to keep the peace and not ruffle feathers.

In any case, here's hoping she had a good time ... sure looked like she did from our POV.
