Miami International Boat Show

Elevated interest rates, economic uncertainty, and a cooling boating market don’t appear to be lessening the appeal of the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show, which kicks-off its five-day run on Wednesday.

With six venues spread across downtown Miami and Miami Beach and an expected crowd of over 100,000 forecasted to attend through the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend, the first major U.S. show this year could be a banner event. “It’s the world’s largest boat and yacht show, offering everything from kayaks to superyachts, plus the latest equipment,” says Andrew Doole, president of Informa’s U.S. Boat Shows division. The stats back him up: There will be more than 1,000 boats from kayaks to superyachts on display, with more than 1,000 exhibitors.

The show will have a VIP program called Windward that provides access to lounges and transportation between the event’s six locations. The exclusive offering will also give access to Superyacht Miami and Art Wynwood.

Here are 10 boats, from global debuts to recently launched brokerage superyachts, that will define this year’s event.

AK Yachts ‘Victorious’

yacht property international

The star of this year’s Miami show? That title will likely go to the 278-foot globe-trotting explorer Victorious from the Turkish yard, AKYacht. Taking up much of the dock space at the Yacht Haven Grande superyacht display, Victorious is coming to MIBS looking for a buyer. Asking price? A cool $129 million. This recipient of a 2022 Robb Report “Best of the Best” award is owned by Turkish entrepreneur Vural Ak, who bought the half-completed superyacht in 2016 from New Zealand billionaire Graeme Hunt and had it towed back to Turkey for completion. With an interior design by Britain’s H2 Yacht Design, Victorious offers sumptuous accommodation for 24 guests across 12 staterooms. It also comes with such luxuries as a massive wellness center with a beauty salon and steam room, a wine cellar, a cinema, two wood-burning fireplaces, and a well-designed playroom for kids. The range of 14,000 nautical miles at 13 knots shows that this vessel can go the distance.

Azimut Magellano 30M

yacht property international

Azimut’s new Magellano 30 Metri splashed way back in January 2022. The flagship of its popular explorer series was originally scheduled to debut at last September’s Cannes boat show, which never happened. It’s finally making its “world premiere” at Miami. This new 98-foot 30M looks fresh, with a striking exterior by naval architect Ken Freivokh and glass-rich interior by Vincenzo De Cotiis. With its trademark wood slats by the stern cockpit and towering hull sides, the yacht is instantly recognizable as being from the Magellano series. The Miami showboat is the first in the U.S. and is currently listed for sale at $12.75 million. It’s said to have over $3 million in options, including upgraded MAN 1900 diesels.

Benetti ‘Grateful’

yacht property international

Less than a year old, the 112-foot Benetti Grateful  will offer some lucky buyer the opportunity to skip the waiting list and take delivery of what is essentially a brand-new boat, in time for summer cruising in the Hamptons. Another bonus: the asking price of $15.9 million is reckoned to be well below the replacement cost. With an exterior design by Britain’s RWD studios, this Benetti 34M Oasis boasts one of the best beach clubs of any sub-120-foot superyacht, courtesy of fold-down terraces on each side, a glass-sided plunge pool overlooking the hydraulic swim platform, and even a cocktail bar. Add to this a contemporary interior in 50 shades of gray and beige by New York architectural firm Bonetti/Kozerki. Grateful ‘s twin 1,380 hp MTU diesels give her a 16-knot top speed and, at 10 knots, the range is 2,700 nautical miles.

Itama 62 RS

yacht property international

If ever a boat was designed for the fast-living, look-at-me Miami boating lifestyle, it’s the Italian-built Itama 62RS . Launched back in 2011 with a wave-cleaving, deep-vee hull that dates back to Itama’s classic FiftyFive model from the mid-2000s, this classically styled 62-footer got a full makeover back two years ago. Now it’s being displayed for the first time in the U.S. at Miami. Looking like some classic 80s rocketship from Miami’s fabled Thunderboat Row, it has an impressively long foredeck, a wraparound windshield, and impressive power and performance. How impressive? With twin MAN V12 turbo diesels cranking out 1,400 hp each, the yacht has a top speed well over 40 knots. The cockpit can hold a crowd of up to 14, with three en suite cabins below deck accommodating up to six.

Formula 457 Center Console Sport

yacht property international

Formula Boats’s popular 387 Center Console Sport is getting a new big brother. Being unveiled at MIBS is the all-new 457 Center Console Sport, which becomes the second-largest boat in the Formula line-up, behind the 500 Super Sport Crossover flagship. Part dayboat and part fishing machine, this new 45-footer comes with Formula’s proven FAS3TECH deep-vee hull and elongated hardtop with an opening windshield and air-conditioning, plus two rows of bolstered sports seats. Up front there’s plenty of seating, while a port-side door in the console leads down to a comfy cabin with a small galley, a head compartment, and a forward double bed. In keeping with Formula’s go-fast heritage, this new 457 comes with triple Mercury Verado 600 V12s. And next summer Formula is unveiling the 457 Center Console Fish version with an upper helm.

Riva 82 Diva

yacht property international

The unveiling of a new Riva makes for a red-letter day at any boat show. And while the Italian yard’s latest 82 Diva flybridge had its premiere at last year’s Cannes show, it’ll be one of the showstoppers at Miami where it will be making its U.S. debut. This sleek, high-sided 82-foot beauty, from the drawing board of Officina Italiana Design, is distinguished by that unmistakable, swept-up hull feature line, a raked-back windshield, and a spacious flybridge. It also features a first for Riva: a beach club with fold-down bulwark terraces on each side. And when you have Piero Ferrari, son of Enzo, overseeing the design and engineering team, you know it will be fast. Powered by twin 1,900 hp MAN V12 turbo diesels, the Diva boasts a top speed of 31 knots.

Chris-Craft Launch 27, 150th Anniversary Edition

yacht property international

Happy 150th to all Chris-Craft owners. In 1874, Christopher Columbus Smith started building wooden skiffs and inboard boats in Algonac, Michigan. To mark this auspicious milestone, the manufacturer—now based in Sarasota, Fla.—is unveiling a Sesquicentennial version of its iconic Launch 27 sports bowrider. There aren’t too many dramatic changes: The silver-gray hull gets an aquamarine boot stripe that was one of the builder’s signature colors in the early years. The hand-stitched, embossed leather cover on the steering wheel has a special 150th Anniversary cap and a Chris-Craft 150 welcome page on the chart-plotter. There is also an aquamarine-edged 150th burgee on the flagpole. It’s fitting that the classic Launch 27 was chosen to celebrate the 150 years of the brand since it was the first model in the current Chris-Craft’s lineup.

Boston Whaler 365 Conquest

yacht property international

More than a few Boston Whaler devotees were upset when the much-loved 345 Conquest fishing machine quietly slipped out of production last year after a long, nine-year run. Thankfully their disappointment should be short-lived because the Miami show sees the unveiling of the 345’s spiritual successor, the all-new 365 Conquest. Loosely based on the larger, flagship 405 Conquest, the newcomer sees the 405’s quartet of Mercury Verado 400s replaced with triple 400 V10s. And while the 365 shares hull and superstructure design cues with the 405, the hardtop gets a new curvier windshield and increased glass in the pilothouse, plus a new upper helm station. The Edgewater, Florida-based division of Brunswick Corporation nicknames its new 365 Conquest the “SUV of the sea” courtesy of its unsinkable hull design, offshore capabilities, and “transformer” cabin, where the dining area transitions to sleeping quarters at the touch of a button.

Tiara EX 54

yacht property international

The slogan for Tiara Yachts’s brand-new EX 54 cruiser, making its Miami debut, could be: “Honey, we shrunk the EX 60 .” Looking very much like a scaled-down version of its flagship 60, the 54-footer has inherited nearly all the best features of its larger brother. They include twin fold-down terraces on the cockpit with built-in doors, a side helm door, sliding glass rear windows with a drop-down section, and a large entertaining area in the bow. Of course, with six less feet to work with, the smaller aft cockpit has less lounging space. The Volvo IPS 950s diesels are also a step down in horsepower from the 60’s twin Volvo IPS 1050s or optional 1350s. Below-decks, the master is a tad smaller and bunk beds instead of twins define the guest cabin. Otherwise, the family resemblance remains intact.

Lazzara Yachts ‘Lanida’

yacht property international

Just gazing at this 92-foot, Florida-built Lazzara 92 LSX and you can almost hear that iconic Jan Hammer soundtrack to Miami Vice. Built in 2010, it’s fresh out of a major refit managed by Lazzara as well as the original crew that’s still with this go-fast superyacht. Named Lanida, which roughly translates to “free spirit,” the yacht has never been chartered and only lightly used. Now it’s on sale, with a $2.95 million asking price. What sets the yacht apart, in addition to that dramatic styling and silver metallic paint, is its impressive power. Squeezed tight into its engine room are four Volvo IPS 900, packing around 780 hp apiece. The combined 3,120 hp is enough to punch the LSX to a top speed of over 31 knots.

The Ultimate Product Placement: Thailand on ‘The White Lotus’

Season 3 of the hit HBO series is being shot in the lush Southeast Asian country, which is betting financial incentives given to the production will pay off in increased tourism numbers.

A shot of a beach with a few people at water’s edge is framed by a palm tree with handpainted signs like “Relax,” “Sand” and Surf” nailed to it.

By Jessica Shaw

“Unforgettable experiences are in the making,” teases an Instagram post from Feb. 13 liked by more than 80,000 people. The photo offers a glimpse of an empty white-sand beach, azure waters, and the barely visible roofs of buildings immersed in a lush landscape of trees. “We are eager to welcome new guests to our resort in Thailand.”

Obscuring the view of the resort: a film clapboard emblazoned with a coral-colored flower logo and the words, “White Lotus Resort & Spa.”

White Lotus resorts, of course, exist only in the fictional world of HBO’s hit hospitality-and-bad-behavior series, “The White Lotus.” The post was HBO’s way of letting fans know that shooting had begun on the series’s third season.

For years it’s been clear that entertainment productions can be big business for locations, but “The White Lotus” has taken the trend to another level, spurring tourism with a show about tourism (at least on its surface), by publicly partnering with tourism. After two seasons, the biting and delectable social satire has an influence that far transcends its many golden statuettes and endless supply of memes. To the travel industry, it can turn a season’s region into an “it” destination, drawing international visitors to the White Lotus stand-ins (the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in Season 1; the San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel in Season 2), not to mention the surrounding sights.

While Mike White, the show’s creator, was undoubtedly drawn by Thailand’s natural beauty and welcoming people, the Thai government also significantly sweetened the pot. The financial details have not been disclosed (HBO did not comment), but last year the Thai government approved a plan that increased the rebate for international productions to 150 million Thai baht (about $4.5 million) . Several months before that, the government announced that for five years it would waive the personal income tax it had been collecting from foreign talent. In other words, Season 3’s cast, which includes Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey and returning Season 1 favorite, Natasha Rothwell, will not have to pay Thailand to work in Thailand.

What’s at stake for Thailand is clear: pre-Covid, the country was making 3.5 billion Thai baht per year from international productions. After falling during the height of the pandemic, that number hit 6.6 billion baht last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Considering the potential windfall during filming and long after, it’s understandable that the country would court Mr. White and his production.

A spokesperson for the Tourism Authority would not give specifics, but wrote in an email, “It had been brought to our attention that ‘The White Lotus’ team was exploring the filming of Season 3 in Asia and therefore we reached out to them to assist with potential hotels to film/stay, possible airline sponsorships and other production support to bring some of their budget costs down to allow Thailand to be more competitive.”

The strategy has already started to pay off: Since the official announcement, searches for Thailand have already jumped 50 percent on Expedia, the online travel agency.

“It’s another form of product placement,” said Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia brands. In this case, however, the product is an entire country. “It only makes sense that a studio and destination would cut a deal and in exchange get some promotion.”

How ‘White Lotus’ Took Off

“The White Lotus” was born out of necessity. HBO approached Mr. White during the early pandemic months of 2020 and asked if he had written anything that could be shot quickly and under strict Covid restrictions. He told them his idea to film a limited series set in a hotel, and by fall was in production on what he hoped would feel like, as he later told Vanity Fair, “a tropical anxiety attack.”

The series may have cleverly skewered some of the ugliest parts of humanity — privilege, racism, sexism — but, oh, the view. Online interest in the Four Seasons Resort Maui jumped by 425 percent after Season 1 ran, according to the property.

Season 2 offered a new slew of eye-catching locations in Sicily, whether on a yacht in the Mediterranean with some (spoiler alert) murderous “high-end gays,” or in a fresco-filled villa in Palermo. Following the October 2022 premiere, Expedia noted a 300 percent jump in online searches for Sicily.

For Marc Speichert, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, partnering with the production has been a lucrative no-brainer.

“Following their roles as the backdrop in ‘The White Lotus,’ both Four Seasons hotels in Maui and Taormina experienced jumps in website visits, availability checks as well as enhanced brand and property awareness; ultimately driving more bookings,” he said in an emailed statement. The Taormina hotel was almost completely sold out for the summer 2023 season, he added.

The Covid rebound

Just how much Thailand’s economy relies on tourism was made clear in the fall of 2021, when the Ministry of Tourism & Sports released dire pandemic-impacted numbers. The number of passengers on international flights to the country had fallen by 95 percent and hotels were only 9 percent occupied. Visitor numbers dropped to 510,000 in 2021 from nearly 40 million two years earlier.

Last year, the country welcomed 28 million visitors, well below 2019’s high. In December, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin met with his tourism ministers to encourage them to draw more foreign tourists year-round , according to the Thai press, telling them, “I want foreign tourists to stay longer and spend more.”

In the zero-sum world of tourism, Thailand’s “White Lotus” gain was another country’s loss. Last fall at the Tokyo Film Festival, during a session on how to attract productions to film in Japan, Georgina Pope, a producer who works in the country, told a story about accompanying a “high profile” showrunner and production team on a scouting trip in Japan, the Hollywood trade publication Deadline reported.

She said conversations about shooting in Japan ended when the showrunner — whom Deadline identified as Mr. White — and team were informed that “the Thai government had just announced a renewal and improvement on their film incentive system,” she said, adding that “for their project, that meant $4.4 million alone.”

But which Thai property would stand in for the titular White Lotus? Sleuths quickly noted the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui was sold out during February and March, when the series would be filming. The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas has also been reported to be a location. Needless to say, both properties offer a spectacularly stunning array of plunge pools, outdoor showers and postcard-worthy vistas that could make a director of photography drool. Neither Four Seasons nor Anantara would say whether their hotels were involved; Mr. White did not return a request for comment.

Set-jetting in overdrive

The New York Post journalist Gretchen Kelly used the term “set-jetting” in 2007, referring to touring the locations of the movies “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Babel.” Since then, there have been enough fans and fortune to go around the globe. According to one study from the University of Zadar, “Game of Thrones” contributed $200 million to Croatia’s economy between 2013 and 2018. New Zealand saw a 50 percent increase in inbound tourism after the success of “The Lord of the Rings,” though it is hard to tease out how much of that is because of the movie. Albuquerque, N.M., mayor Tim Keller wrote on his Instagram in 2022 that “Breaking Bad” had “over $385 million in economic impact.” No wonder the city erected statues of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.

When international borders closed in 2020, the set-jetting spigot ran dry. Going abroad was done from home, with a screen serving as a sad stand-in for a passport. The closest a fan might get to the Scottish Highlands would be binge watching “Outlander.” The only way to make it into a national park was by way of “Yellowstone.”

By the time Covid restrictions were lifted and the homebound could finally fulfill their pandemic travel fantasies, set-jetting had become one of the primary factors in picking a destination.

A TripIt survey released earlier this month showed that nearly twice as many American travelers plan on taking pop culture-related trips this year as they did in 2023. And according to an American Express study released last year, 70 percent of Gen Z and millennials said that they have been inspired to visit a location based on something they saw onscreen.

It’s a demographic statistic that didn’t go unnoticed by Four Seasons, a chain not known for catering to the 40s-and-under set. “Gen Z and millennials are certainly a target for our brand, as they represent the next generation of luxury travelers,” said Mr. Speichert. “Over the next five years, we anticipate a significant wealth transfer of approximately $68 trillion from baby boomers to millennials, accompanied by a 50 percent increase in High-Net-Worth individuals.”

Not that Thailand’s Tourism Authority is expecting every set-jetter to be able to afford a Four Seasons stay. After all, Season 2’s cobblestone Sicilian streets were as coveted as the hotel’s piano bar. And Thailand’s Tourism Authority is hoping to showcase more than luxury properties. Earlier this month, HBO announced that the Thai singer Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal, of the South Korean K-pop group Blackpink, will make her acting debut in the series.

“The show will undoubtedly generate great awareness for Thailand,” said the Thai Tourism Authority’s spokesperson in an emailed statement. “‘The White Lotus’ will certainly strengthen the kingdom’s status as a preferred filming destination and a beacon of experience-based tourism, inspiring even more filmmakers to consider filming in Amazing Thailand.”

How 'vietnamese kim kardashian' ly nha ky spends her multi-million-dollar fortune.

Recognized as an actress and businesswoman, Ly Nha Ky disclosed on a TV show that she possesses over 400 handbags from prestigious international brands, highlighting her Hermès collection in a variety of hues, with prices ranging from several hundred million to over a billion Vietnamese dong (VND100 million equals US$4,048).

She explained that she tends to purchase multiple bags of the same style but in various colors, citing a concern over not having a matching bag to complete her outfits if she were to buy only one or two, which she finds "very frustrating." She applies the same principle to her footwear, often buying multiple hues of the same design.

"I bought so many bags that it’s hard for me to manage and I sometimes lost some of them without knowing," she said. "If I particularly like a bag, I'll commission the brand to create a bespoke version for me."

The actress noted that her extensive bag collection was primarily acquired during her international travels, constantly adding new pieces upon encountering them on shopping excursions.

"My home currently dedicates two rooms solely for the storage of apparel and fashion accessories," she revealed.

According to a 2022 South China Morning Post article, in addition to her apparel collection, Ly Nha Ky owns a 25-story mansion in Ho Chi Minh City and a villa in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in Southeastern Vietnam. She became one of Vietnam’s pioneers in yacht ownership by purchasing a 360 Ferretti yacht for US$4.4 million in 2016.

Her automobile collection includes a US$1.8 million Rolls-Royce Ghost, which she uses for local travel, and a Jaguar F-Type R Convertible valued at US$500,000.

Beyond her vehicles and fashion collections, the actress is known for her exquisite diamond jewelry, notably wearing pieces valued at US$600,000 at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

In response to many’s questions about her wealth, she explained that apart from her acting career in the entertainment sector, she has found success in business ventures spanning real estate, diamonds, and in trade and tourism.

Ly Nha Ky, 42, is celebrated for her acting in TV series and movies such as "Kieu Nu Va Dai Gia" (Beauty Women and Rich Men), "Mua He Lanh" (Cold Summer), and "Gio Nghich Mua" (Unseasonal Winds).

She was recognized as Vietnam’s first Tourism Ambassador in 2011, and is currently serving in the same role for Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in Southeastern Vietnam.

She has also held the position of Honorary Consul of Romania in Ho Chi Minh City since 2018.

Ly Nha Ky recently faced allegations regarding a freezing of her assets , which she has openly refuted.
