Cheoy Lee's new Explorer and Tradition yacht series revealed

Cheoy Lee Yachts has teamed up with Overing Yacht Designs to reveal a new fleet of explorer yachts.

Designed with American owners in mind, the new series of “rugged expedition vessels” is described as the “perfect platform for any oceangoing adventure”.Key features include full-displacement steel hulls, bulbous bows and long-range fuel capacities.

One unique feature is a tank deck that allows the crew to move around the yacht from bow to stern uninterrupted. The yachts balance practicality with spacious and luxurious owner and guest spaces, including a large flybridge lounge and aft beach club.“Fresh and comfortable” interior design comes courtesy of Seattle-based Sylvia Bolton Design .

Overing Yacht Designs owner Jon Overing described the new models as “true world-cruising yachts".

The Cheoy Lee Yachts Explorer line includes four new models:

107 Explorer

Currently in build with delivery scheduled for summer 2022, the 32 metre 107 Explorer features accommodation for 10 guests and a maximum of eight crew members. Accommodation comprises a master suite on the bridge deck, and VIP on the main deck.

126 Explorer

With contemporary exterior styling, this 38 metre expedition yacht has spacious living quarters thanks to a 7.9 metre beam. Accommodation is for a total of 10 guests and a maximum of eight crew, spread across a bridge-deck master, a VIP and captain’s cabin on the main deck and three further guest suites on the lower deck.

130 Explorer

Currently in build and due for delivery in summer 2022, the 39 metre 130 Explorer is equipped with a shallow 2.2 metre draft and 10,000-gallon fuel capacity, making it well suited for both long-range adventuring and island hopping. Accommodation is for a total of 10 guests and a maximum of eight crew.

132 Explorer

Spread across four decks, this yacht is designed for experienced owners and provides accommodation for 10 guests and eight crew across a five cabin layout. Toys and tenders can be stored out of the way on the foredeck.

The yard also revealed a new Tradition series, which marries semi-planing hull performance with luxury accommodation. Power will come from twin CAT C32 ACERT 1,600hp engines.

Designed with American yachtsmen in mind, the Cheoy Lee Tradition series aims to bring “luxury and functionality together” Overing said.

118 Tradition

With a 21-knot cruising speed, the 118 Tradition features plentiful social gathering spaces, including an enclosed skylounge. A country kitchen is found on the main deck alongside a master suite with far-reaching ocean oceans. Further accommodation includes two twin suites and two VIPs for a maximum of 10 guests on board.

Cheoy Lee Yachts for Sale

The Cheoy Lee Shipyard has built over 5,000 vessels in the past 60 years and currently builds luxury yachts ranging in size from 59 feet (18m) to over 200 feet (60m), as well as commercial craft including tugs, ferries, patrol, pilot, supply and stand-by vessels in steel, GRP and aluminium.

The Cheoy Lee Company has been a major shipbuilder for well over a century and has grown from humble beginnings into the largest yacht builder in Asia. Cheoy Lee’s founding family still owns and runs the company, now 4th and 5th generation, whose popular modern yacht lines include the Serenity series of ocean-going displacement yachts, the Bravo series of fast motor yachts, and the semi-custom Global series.

The Cheoy Lee Shipyard still operates from the same original site in Hong Kong today, on the banks of the Pearl River, with a state-of-the-art production facility which was opened in 1999. The yard has been expanded three times and covers a total 28 acres, including on-site dormitories that house over 1,200 employees and skilled labourers.

Clients benefit from the latest in technology and advanced production machinery. In addition to the Hong Kong shipyard, Cheoy Lee also has a US-based purchasing department, handling the acquisition of equipment, navigational systems and various other parts from the international marketplace.

History of Cheoy Lee Yachts

The Cheoy Lee Shipyard was founded in 1870 by the Lo family in Shanghai, initially operating as a build and repair yard for wooden steam-powered craft. In 1936, the company moved its headquarters to Hong Kong when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded China. When the Japanese Imperial Army also entered Hong Kong, the Lo family fled back to China abandoning the shipyard.

During the next four years of Japanese occupation, much of the shipyard was dismantled. When the Lo family’s eldest son returned in 1946, he found there was little left of the family legacy and embarked on the build of the first post-war boat with his own hands.

By the mid 1950’s, Cheoy Lee was building teak sailing and motor yachts, most of which were exported to the USA. By the mid 1960’s, 90% of Cheoy Lee’s output was pleasure crafts and at this time, a second build shed was established on Lantau Island at the western end of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor. As a pioneer in the development and implementation of fiberglass construction techniques, Cheoy Lee phased out their wooden construction soon after.

In 1977, Cheoy Lee built what was the world’s largest moulded GRP yacht to date, the 130-foot (40m) SHANGO II and by 1979 their first line of all-foam cored production motor yachts was underway; the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sports Yacht.

Powered by family values and a passion to achieve new heights, the defined core values of performance, innovation, reliability, quality and service are executed at all times.

The Cheoy Lee collection

Operating shipyards in Doumen in Southern China and also on the Howloon Peninsula in Hong Kong, Cheoy Lee builds luxury motor yachts and superyachts.

The Cheoy Lee Shipyard is one of very few yards in that world that routinely build in steel, fiberglass, aluminum and various combinations of these materials. The versatile yard builds to globally recognized standards and regulations, often partnering with specialist design firms, naval architects and structural engineers to ensure the full extent of their abilities is utilized. Cheoy Lee offers several semi-custom luxury yacht series, including the Alpha performance yacht range, the Bravo raised pilothouse motor yacht range, the Serenity luxury cruising yacht range, and the Explorer superyacht series.

One of the yard’s most notable builds to date is the 148-foot (45m) MY MARCO POLO. A transoceanic explorer, this superyacht is constructed in steel with a GRP superstructure. The yacht has a distinctly recognisable dark green hull and was designed by the award-winning Ron Holland.

Northrop & Johnson can offer a wide range of Cheoy Lee yachts for sale, including wholly custom superyachts built in steel and aluminum and fiberglass semi-custom full and fast displacement series motor yachts.

CL Yachts Drives Iconic Asian Builder Cheoy Lee Into New Era

The new brand from historic builder Cheoy Lee, CL Yachts shares its parent company’s production facilities and pioneering spirit.

It’s not often you see a Director of a major shipyard dressed in white overalls, but that’s exactly what I saw upon arriving at the Cheoy Lee/CL Yachts facility in Doumen after a two-hour car ride west from Hong Kong.

Martin Lo and Hans Lo, fourth and fifth-generations members respectively of the Lo family that has owned Cheoy Lee since the late 19th century

Martin Lo and Hans Lo, fourth and fifth-generations members respectively of the Lo family that has owned Cheoy Lee since the late 19th century

After crossing the world’s longest bridge to Zhuhai, we drove another hour or so to the site that has been building Cheoy Lee boats since 1999 and, more recently, models for CL Yachts, the company’s new brand of luxury motor yachts.

Martin is one of eight sons of Lo To, who led Cheoy Lee’s 1936 move to Hong Kong from Shanghai, where the company was first formed by Lo To’s grandfather in Pudong in the late 1800s.

“Our ancestors started everything in Shanghai from a very, very humble beginning, doing repairs, boiler making, those sorts of things,” says Martin, part of the fourth generation of the Lo family that has owned the company.

“My grandfather and my father worked very hard to lay the foundation for my generation and we’ve just been making it better.”

All eight sons are involved in the business as Directors, with Martin among three based during the working week in the Doumen factory, where each of the trio have a house near the ‘Senior Dorm’ building for management-level employees.

Six of the eight Directors and the three fifth-generation Deputy Directors (*) celebrate the launch of the expanded Hong Kong headquarters in 2019: (left-right) Karen*, Martin, Frank, Henry, S.Y., Simon*, Ken, Rick and Hans*

Martin is also Director of CL Yachts and works closely with nephew Hans Lo, the brand’s Deputy Director and also based at Doumen from Monday to Saturday.

There are worker dormitories for 1,200 staff, with the current workforce in Doumen estimated to range between 800-1,000.

The site is the latest in Cheoy Lee’s history, which in Hong Kong started with a main facility in the former Ngau Chi Wan Shipyard – now reclaimed land – and a smaller one near Lai Chi Kok, situated in east and west Kowloon respectively.

In the 1960s, Cheoy Lee moved to Penny’s Bay in northeast Lantau while keeping the smaller site in Lai Chi Kok, where the current head office and service yard sits on reclaimed land and neighbours include Turbojet, Shun Tak and New World First Ferry.

In the 1990s, after Penny’s Bay was designated for the Disneyland theme park (which eventually opened in 2005), Cheoy Lee looked at several sites on the mainland before settling on Doumen.

GREAT GROWTH

Now more than double the size than when the facility opened over two decades ago, the Doumen site sits by the Xi River (West River), which leads south to Macau and is a western tributary of the Pearl River.

The current site has been built in three phases and is one of Asia’s best-equipped yacht building facilities, with enormous halls for fabrication, moulding, assembly and painting; furniture, components and steel workshops; and machine, propeller and furniture-paint shops. A mock-up space houses real-size wooden versions of upcoming models, either part or whole.

The site’s advanced machinery includes five-axis, four-axis and three-axis CNC machines, a CNC plasma cutter and waterjet cutters. A 150-tonne TraveLift is emblazoned with CL Yachts branding, while larger vessels are launched from the 1,000-tonne slipway.

“We have everything onsite. We even have a 3D printing machine to quickly prototype a shape or hull,” says Martin. “I’d say we produce more than 90 per cent of each of our boats in-house.

We fabricate the hulls, the [fitted] furniture, the interior finishing, cut our own marble and so on, so I’d say 95 per cent.”

Outside components include the engines, carbon-fibre and loose furniture, made by a Guangdong-based company that produces to Italian designs.

Hans, who also wears overalls onsite, adds: “Our advantage of doing everything in-house is that we control the quality. When you’re buying a yacht from CL Yachts, it really is built by CL Yachts as opposed to some other shipyards where it’s being built by the lowest bidder.”

The brand was launched at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October 2018 and currently comprises the CLB72 and CLA76 models, soon to be joined by the flagship CLB88.

CL Yachts also shares its parent company’s headquarters in Hong Kong, where the launch of the expanded and remodelled office was held in mid-2019.

“CL Yachts is creating a new direction for the future. It’s laying a good groundwork for Hans and my other nephew and niece to carry on the legacy,” Martin says. “Now that the younger generation is coming in, we have to refresh our image.”

PIONEERING PRODUCTS

Today, the vast majority of Cheoy Lee’s global business is commercial boats including tugboats and ferries, although the company remains recognised as a pleasure boat builder in the US, where it has a purchasing, sales and marketing department in Fort Lauderdale.

Martin acknowledges that CL Yachts was conceived when Cheoy Lee started to look at itself and what it needed to do to relaunch itself in the world of luxury yachts.

“Before we did the rebranding, we asked ourselves, do we do the product or branding first? We looked back at our history and we had always been a product-driven company – innovative, daring,” he says.

“We’ve been the first to do many things, but we didn’t want to become complacent. We need to be trend-setters, not trend followers.” Its pioneering spirit is reflected by its product evolution even more than its ability to move location and start again several times over.

When Cheoy Lee arrived in Hong Kong, it was building fishing boats and powered cargo vessels, then diversified in the 1950s into teak sailing and motor boats, mainly for export to the US.

In the 1960s, the company phased out wood production as it became a pioneer in the use of fibreglass and, later, GRP. “Cheoy Lee even helped Lloyd’s write the book on fibreglass manufacturing in the early 1960s,” Martin says.

In the late 1970s, Cheoy Lee built the world’s largest moulded GRP yacht, the 39.6m motorsailer Shango II , and then the first foam-cored production boat, the 48’ Sport Yacht designed by Tom Fexas.

In the mid-1980s, it produced a Hargrave-designed 103-footer that was then the world’s largest fiberglass production motoryacht and, again, fully cored – a first for a production yacht of that scale.

“Tom Fexas was relatively unknown when we used his design for the 48ft sport fisherman, so we helped put him on the map. We’ve always been daring enough to hire visionary naval architects and employ visionary techniques,” Martin says.
“In 1987, I worked on a quality-assurance programme for fibreglass production, also for Lloyd’s, that trickled down to other classification societies, so my quality-assurance programme became the benchmark.”

Cheoy Lee built several Frank Mulder designs including 100ft
and 125ft models, and the 44.1m, all-composite Seashaw launched in 1995. In 2004, the yard delivered the second Seashaw ( see Top 100 Superyachts of Asia-Pacific 2020, Issue 50 ), completing the 51.9m build after adding a composite superstructure to a steel hull built in northern China.

The 45m Marco Polo and 46m Qing (ex Mazu ) transoceanic yachts were built in 2007 and 2010 respectively, followed by more superyachts including the Global 104’ in 2016.

The yard has remained on top of design and production trends, also incorporating some of the latest materials and technologies in its commercial vessels.

“The use of carbon-fibre is very popular now, with many companies spouting its virtues,” Martin says. “However, we’ve been using this material for over a decade; we simply haven’t mentioned it.”

NEW DESIGN LANGUAGE

To compete in today’s world of luxury motor yachts, CL Yachts employed the services of Jozeph Forakis, a designer from Milan, Italy, who’s responsible for the design of the new brand as well as upcoming models. His work has already been recognised, with both the CL Yachts branding and the design of the CLB88 winning their categories at last year’s Good Design Awards.

Having carefully studied its competitors in the 60-100ft range, the CL Yachts management is ultimately aiming to build on Cheoy Lee’s reputation for strong, seaworthy boats with exciting, forward-looking designs and modern features for a new generation of owners.

Hans, who was born in Hong Kong and educated in Canada, elaborates: “We needed a new design language. For our upcoming models, we’re using three themes – the floating loft; nature, bringing the outside in; and the spaceship concept.

“That symbolises that when you go yachting, you’re on a vessel. Many boats today look like mansions on the water, so we’re looking at what we can do to remind people you’re still on a vessel that takes you on a journey in a luxurious setting. You’re living on a machine and we need to bring back this idea. The point is to be on a boat, not to be on a house on water.

“We’re also looking for iconic design elements that might differentiate us from other brands; incorporating flowing spaces into our interiors, seamless surfaces, innovative materials, unique furniture. The CLB88 is going to be one of the first boats that introduces this new design language.”

Much of the excitement in Doumen is focused on the first CLB88, which is set to launch in the first quarter of this year, although the yard is also building hull four of the CLB72, having sold the first three.

On paper, the CLB88 has a number of impressive design features and one of the most remarkable is that among its four lower-deck staterooms, the master and VIP are both full-beam, adjoining and almost equal in size.

Initial plans for the yacht are for it to arrive in the US in the summer and cruise to New England, where it would appear at September’s Newport International Boat Show in Rhode Island, an event first attended by CL Yachts last September.

The plan is then for the yacht to work her way down to the iconic Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which starts in late October and marks the second anniversary of CL Yachts, a new brand, but one with five generations of boat-building expertise behind it.

Cheoy Lee Through the Years

Cheoy Lee Through The Years

Cheoy Lee's origins can be traced back to a family operated shipyard in Shanghai that opened in the late 1800's. In 1936, the family relocated the shipyard to Hong Kong, then a British colony, to build power cargo vessels. In addition, the repowered merchant sailing vessels designed to outrun the Japanese blockade during World War II. Heading into the 1950’s the founding family which still operates Cheoy Lee to this day, branched out into the construction of teak sailing and motor yachts. At one point, luxury yachts accounted for about 90 percent of the shipyard's output.

Cheoy Lee resumes building large passenger ferries in a shipyard that was devastated by the war. Additionally, the shipyard began research and development into fiberglass as a boatbuilding material, and began of constructing teak sailing vessels and motoryachts.

1950 shipyard

Sailboat “Mahjong”, a 52’ Sparkman & Stephens designed teak Bermudian yawl built in 1957, sailed from Hong Kong to New York on her own bottom, a 15,000 mile shakedown delivery journey. Cheoy Lee also began production of the bluewater Lion 35, of which 70 were constructed of teak in the years before switching to fiberglass construction when 27 more Lions were built in the later years.

1957 sail

The largest GRP yacht of its time, the 40m (130 ft.) motor sailer Shango II was built at Cheoy Lee’s Penny’s Bay facility on Lantau Island, from a custom one-off fiberglass mold.

1977 ferry

Construction of the first production, all foam-cored, vacuum bagged fiberglass motoryacht. This 48 Sportfisherman outperformed lower tech rivals, which saw the model make the cross over to patrol and law enforcement applications. This was also the cornerstone of a long and successful relationship with the legendary American naval architect, Tom Fexas of Tom Fexas Yacht Design.

1980 lifestyle

The original motoryacht SeaShaw was the first 145’ yacht in the Cheoy Lee Global Series. This GRP motoryacht was designed by Frank Mulder. It was also at this time that Cheoy Lee sold the Penney’s Bay facility to the Hong Kong Government for the construction of Hong Kong Disneyland. Yacht production was moved to mainland China.

1996 luxury

The first vessels were completed at the new Hin Lee Shipyard facility, on the Pearl River. The first yacht was the 125ft motoryacht Janet, completed in 2003, and the first commercial vessel was a 30 meter Hydrographic Survey Vessel Mata Ikan, for the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The first TransOcean Explorer, Marco Polo was completed in 2007.

A second Cheoy Lee Transoceanic Explorer Series yacht is launched, motoryacht Qing. Her full displacement steel hull has a range of 6,600nm.

cheoy lee yachts products

In collaboration with American naval architect Jon Overing, Cheoy Lee introduces the line of Explorer yachts to include the 107’, 126’, 130’ and 132'. Built of steel and aluminum, yachts with deeper draft boast a central corridor from bow to stern, four decks and all-weather cruising.

Nothing quite compares to an icy cool Moscow Mule on a hot day. But what if you are following a diet and don’t want all the sugar typically found in ginger beer? Did you know our copper mugs are perfect for keeping any drink icy cold, and not just Moscow Mules? We recently discovered a healthy and delicious twist on our favorite cocktail that tastes incredible in our copper mugs.

We’ve been using kombucha in place of ginger beer and the tart and fizzy beverage is all the rage in health circles. You may remember mushroom tea from the 90s that sat on the counter in a large jar for months growing a mushroom like disc at the top known as a SCOBY ( which is short for " symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast"). Many of our parents drank the tea and many of us remember that it had such a questionable smell that we couldn’t bring ourselves to try it. But now mushroom tea, or kombucha, has become mainstream and can easily be purchased from most grocery stores. And we can personally attest that it tastes delicious.

But what is kombucha anyways? Kombucha is essentially sweet black or green tea fermented with a culture of yeast and bacteria (or a SCOBY). It’s generally made with only four ingredients: tea, water, sugar, and SCOBY. While that might not sound appetizing, it tastes like carbonated iced tea with a slightly acidic finish. And what’s more, it’s incredibly good for you and might even help curb your hangover. Sign us up!

Kombucha is full of probiotics, antioxidants, and B vitamins to name a few. Probiotics are live, healthy bacteria that help create a healthy balance of organisms in your intestines. Kombucha is also said to have detoxification properties which cleanse the body and support a healthy immune style, which is why you might wake up without a hangover after indulging in this delicious beverage.

You can buy your own kombucha, ready made from the store and flavoured with delicious additions such as ginger, raspberry, or mint. For the more adventurous, you can even make your own kombucha from scratch if you have a small SCOBY to start the tea. You can sometimes find SCOBY s at farmer’s markets, Etsy, or even Craigslist (weird but true), but the easiest way would be to find a friend who already makes homemade kombucha and can give you a piece of their SCOBY .

Fun fact: did you know kombucha has a small percentage of alcohol already in it? You might have felt that slight wine buzz after downing a bottle quickly with lunch and that’s due to the small alcohol content. The alcohol content is less than 0.5% which is why it doesn’t have to be labeled on the bottle and you don’t have to be a certain age to purchase according to the rules and regulations of the Food and Drug Administration.

Once you’ve found your kombucha (for simplicity we prefer to buy our own ready made ginger kombucha) you can get started with your delicious kombucha mule recipe. If you’re serving guests that aren’t big drinkers, feel free to omit the vodka for a virgin cocktail that tastes seriously good.

The Ferretti Group, one of the world top companies specializing in the design, building and sale of motor yachts, with an amazing portfolio of eight of the most exclusive and prominent brands, is thrilled to announce its participation in the Moscow Boat Show 2013. From 12 to 17 March, two of the Group fleet’s most successful yachts will be presented as absolute premieres for the Russian market: motor yacht Ferretti 530, representing Ferretti Yachts , and the 27-foot Iseo superyacht tender by Riva .

Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show

This year’s Moscow Boat Show will also offer the Ferretti Group the opportunity to announce all yachting enthusiasts in Russia and Northern Eurasia a new important achievement in its international growth: the renewal of its exclusive dealership agreement for the Russian Federation with its partner Premium Yachts , one of the leading dealers operating in the boating sector in Russia , which will represent the Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Itama , Bertram , Riva e Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line brands.

The agreement – which was officially announced today during a press conference attended, among others, by Ferruccio Rossi (Ferretti Group’s CEO), Alexey Kurochkin (Premium Yachts’s President), and Stefano Campanelli (Sales Manager for the EMEA area for Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line) – is part of Ferretti Group’s strategy for a further expansion on the European markets offering the best short/medium-term growth perspectives, also thanks to the financial soundness regained following the strategic partnership forged with the Weichai Group.

More specifically, the Russian boating market holds a great potential for the Ferretti Group’s development because of the rapid growth of average wealth among the population and an increasing interest for Made in Italy luxury goods, like Ferretti Group yachts.

Through the renewal of the agreement with Premium Yachts, the Group will further strengthen its highly selected distribution network – which currently includes approximately 60 dealers ensuring the best possible customer care in more than 80 countries worldwide – as well as its presence in the traditional EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa ) area, one of the three macro-regions (besides the America and the Asia-Pacific) into which the Group’s sales structure is divided.

Moreover, in a medium/long-term perspective, the Ferretti Group is expecting an increasing interest on the Russian market not only for flying bridge yachts above 70’ in length, but also towards smaller crafts, both flybridge and open/coupé ones, which are particularly suitable for river cruising or pleasure boating in Russia’s large lakes. Consequently, the renewal of the dealership agreement with Premium Yachts also allows to look ahead at the future aiming to conquer new market segments where less competitors are currently present in terms of both products and geographic location.

The press conference, which was held today at the Lotte Hotel in Moscow, had also the objective of introducing attending journalists and yachting enthusiasts to the main new products launched by the Ferretti Group over the last few months, namely: motor yacht Ferretti 870 , Ferretti 690 yacht , and the project of the new flagship Ferretti 960 superyacht for the Ferretti Yachts brand; luxury yacht Pershing 82 ’ and superyacht Pershing 108’ New Edition for Pershing; Riva 63’ Virtus and the project of the new Riva flagship, 122’ Mythos yacht , as well as the entire range of the Itama, Bertram and Mochi Craft brands.

The yachts launched over the last few months by CRN – the Group’s brand specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium yachts between 40 and 90 metres – were also presented during the conference: the two superyachts: CRN superyacht Jade (60 metres long) and CRN mega yacht Chopi Chopi (80 metres long), the latter being one of the largest pleasure vessels ever built in Italy and the largest one ever built by the Ancona-based shipyard.

“The renewal of our dealership agreement with an important partner like Premium Yachts – which has worked on the Russian market for almost 10 years and can boast an outstanding product knowledge and an excellent local market penetration – and the presentation of the Group’s latest models are an integral part of our development strategy on the EMEA markets offering the best growth perspectives in the short-medium term,” stated Ferruccio Rossi, Ferretti Group’s CEO. “The Moscow Boat Show 2013, which has now reached its sixth edition, will extend over approximately 45,000 square metres this year and will be attended by more than 350 international boating companies. This Show represents an interesting business opportunity for us and an unmissable event in terms of visibility, since we are identifying a considerable growth potential in this area thanks to the timeless attractiveness of our products – true ambassadors of Made in Italy production all over the world”.
