Persona 5: The Phantom X - Everything We Know

A new mobile spin-off of Persona 5, The Phantom X, entered its first closed beta in March.

By Jenny Zheng on April 22, 2023 at 6:00AM PDT

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a new mobile and PC spin-off of the very popular Persona 5. It's currently only slated for release in China, with no news of an international release yet.

P5X's very first closed beta ended on March 31, and we've listed below what we know so far about the gameplay and story. Keep in mind that mechanics and other details revealed during the beta may change for the full release.

Who's making the game?

Publisher Perfect World and developer Black Wings studio are making Persona 5: The Phantom X with "deep involvement" from Atlus and Sega on the creation of the characters, story, and music. Atlus character designer Shigenori Soejima --a Persona veteran who served as character designer for P5's Phantom Thieves--designed P5X's main character, Wonder, and his Persona.

Is there a release date yet?

Nope. More importantly, we also do not know if P5X will get localized for an international release. Persona 5: The Phantom X was announced on March 16, with closed beta registrations opening on March 17. The closed beta took place March 29-31, and according to the official announcement , was available to PC and Android users in China only.

What's the story?

Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5, is not the main character. The new main character's code name is Wonder, and a primary theme of Persona 5: The Phantom X is "a lack of desire." From the trailers, it appears that Wonder--you get to name the protagonist, but we'll refer to him as Wonder for convenience's sake--encounters P5X's new mascot, an owl named Luffy. Wonder will then meet a man who is "twisted by desire," and he'll enter the man's baseball-themed palace to steal his Treasure.

Wonder's persona is Janosik , a hero who "robs the rich but doesn't kill innocents."

Below is a more detailed, but still brief, breakdown of the first palace's story in the closed beta. (Click or tap on the black bars to reveal the text.)

The game opens with Wonder in a classroom scene filling out a form detailing his future plans. He's visibly bored and, after falling asleep, gets transported to Igor's Velvet room. They chat about desire. Igor leaves Wonder with a warning that being without desire can cause one to give up on themselves.

Wonder then meets Luffy--an owl-looking avatar that replaces Mona's role as companion--when he falls asleep on the subway. They go on a jaunt into combat, and Wonder awakens his Persona.

Fast-forwarding a little bit, Wonder's at a subway stop, and he sees a guy attempting to kick a female classmate, Motoha Arai (code name Closer), off the train platform and onto the train tracks. Arai's friend tries to defend her, but unfortunately, she becomes the one to get kicked.

Wonder enters the palace of the evil guy, and Closer secretly follows him. She gets kidnapped and then, under duress, awakens her Persona. It turns out the evil guy used to be Closer's baseball teacher, but he has a grudge against Closer because when she was an elementary school kid, she successfully hit a pitch from him. He apparently lost his professional reputation due to that event. The story shares a lot of elements with P5's first arc revolving around the abusive volleyball teacher Suguru Kamoshida.

The closed beta's story did not seem to resonate with some players. The story is "short and incomplete," said user 以身为J in their evaluation of the game . "The progression of the story is too abrupt… the main character suddenly becomes a Phantom Thief and gets an owl companion." Bilibili user Treedad also agreed in a P5X closed beta review , loosely translated, "The 'You are me, I am me' happens right in the beginning of the game, and then when you're still confused about what just happened, the owl immediately tells you how to start fighting monsters."

The developers addressed criticism towards the main storyline, and their comments are included below, in the closed beta post-mortem section.

P5X's combat is largely the same as P5 and is still turn-based. However, there are a few changes. (Thanks to YouTube user Faz for uploading recorded combat gameplay):

  • One More mechanic : Triggering One More still works as it did previously. But in P5, players could choose which abilities to use in the extra turn. In P5X, One More is a specific attack and players can't choose.
  • Weakness "meter:" In order to achieve knockdown, players need to trigger weak a certain amount of times to reduce a weakness "meter"--somewhat similar to Persona 5 Striker's combat--to zero before the monster is knocked down.
  • Highlight: Showtime has turned into Highlight. This is triggered when all enemies are knocked down. Players can choose one character to Highlight, and the Highlighted character can deal a lot of damage of a specific attribute type. The attribute that a Highlighted character will deal is shown on the Highlight "wheel."

Mementos is expanded in P5X, and players can unlock parts of Mementos with "map parts" that they ram into with the Luffy bus. Mementos, according to 八咲Ureshiiiiii's closed beta write-up , is also the place where players go to do daily quests.

Training team members and social links

Players can level up their team members, their weapons, and also their Personas. Each character has stats like attack, crit, defense, and more, which were absent in P5. There are still social links, and like in P5, you can gift character items. The extent of dates is unknown right now.

Aside from Wonder and Motoha Arai, players can also include other companions on their team like Seiji, Mont, and Yuki. They also have their own special Personas.

Gallery image 1

Exploration

Players can explore Tokyo and do the following activities:

  • Taking photos
  • Going to the batting cage
  • Bathing in the public bathhouse
  • Exercising in the gym
  • Signing up for work shifts
  • Watching movies
  • Going on dates

It's basically the mode that contains familiar minigames from Persona 5, with the addition of the brand-new fishing activity. A player has already put a fishing guide up , so there's certainly excitement around the new minigame.

There are new places on the maps, like the protagonist's very well-furnished and gigantic home. But a lot of familiar places from P5 are present, such as Tae Takemi's clinic. Sojiro is not present anymore, and LeBlanc has been replaced by a different coffee shop with a new barista. The interior of the new shop does, however, look almost identical to LeBlanc. Player Faz tried to go up the stairs to Joker's previous living area , but the game said it was a restricted area.

Will there be gacha? What about other mechanics found in other mobile games?

It's likely there will be gacha mechanics. While gacha was not active during the closed beta , each character had gacha-like animations. P5X is also a mobile-centric game, so let's just say there is a decent chance we'll see gacha in the future.

In the closed beta, players obtained characters, including the original P5 team members, through shop currency and quest completions.

Similar to Genshin Impact's resin, Persona 5: The Phantom X also has a stamina system. According to 八咲Ureshiiiiii's closed beta write-up , if players want to level up Personas and weapons, they have to use stamina to enter the Metaverse to fight special monsters.

Closed beta post-mortem

Persona 5: The Phantom X keeps a lot of the mechanics from Persona 5 intact, and the art direction is almost indistinguishable from P5. There are gacha mobile elements--stamina meter and potentially gacha for character and/or weapons--but that's not too surprising for a free-to-play mobile game. What people will likely be keeping an eye on, as game development progresses, is how the brand-new storyline in P5X will evolve.

The developer acknowledged some players' dissatisfaction with the main storyline in a note posted after the closed beta ended. "[I want to say] thank you to every player that offered feedback and criticism of the main storyline--like the abrupt story progression, fast pacing, weak character development, and more," said producer V. "It's true that there are problems with the story. Also, there are currently a lot of important story moments that are getting 2D and 3D animated scenes and a majority of those are still in production. We couldn't show those in the closed beta, and that's why some of the story felt disjointed."

V went on to say that Atlus' Kazuhisa Wada and the original development team take the game's script very seriously, and with their help, P5X's development team believes they can deliver a better and more exciting story.

Youtuber Faz posted a new gameplay clip comparing the Shinjuku district of Persona 5 and Persona 5: The Phantom X. As you can see, the Shinjuku in the latter looks much more expansive, with a bunch of new shops, alleyways, and NPCs to explore and interact with. Visually, it's a decent upgrade from P5.

The Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal, and Persona 5 Strikers protagonist, Joker, is a 5-star playable character in Persona 5: The Phantom. Have a look at the snippet of P5X gameplay below showcasing Joker in action.

Wonder is the protagonist of Persona 5: The Phantom X, and Faz has published new gameplay footage showcasing their Awakening moment in the second beta.

Persona 5: The Phantom X second beta has revealed a bunch of new playable characters, including the first 5-star original character Yaoling Li Rin. Persona content creator, Faz, has also made an eight-minute-long Youtube video detailing all the new characters and their abilities, which you can check out below.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Second Beta Test Announced

Perfect World Games has announced a second beta test for Persona 5: The Phantom X. The "Awakening Test" begins on 18 August 2023. There's also a new two-mins long trailer beta trailer featuring familiar and new characters. You can register for the beta until 18 August. More details are available on the game's official website.

Do note that the beta will only be available in China. Unfortunately, there's still no word on a global or Japanese release date.

Persona 5: The Phantom X will be released on PC and mobile device s (Android and iOS). As of this writing, there's no concrete release date for the game.

Early testing for Persona 5: The Phantom X began on 29th March 2023 . However, this testing is limited to China. As of this writing, we do not know if there are any plans to bring this early testing or beta to the west.

While this is unfortunate, the good news is that several notable Persona content creators have access to the game, and they are sharing snippets of The Phantom X gameplay on social media platforms and Youtube.

persona 5 the phantom x setting

Not much is known about The Phantom X's story except for the fact that it take place in modern-day Tokyo where people's corrupted desires have manifested their own realities in the form of dungeons called Palaces. Furthermore, every person's desires collectively form the Mementos, also a fully explorable dungeon filled with enemy encounters and treasures.

The main story is about targeting these corrupted individuals with Palaces, defeating them, and cleansing society for the better. One of the first Palaces we know from the trailers is of a person named Kiuchi.

persona 5 the phantom x characters

Persona 5: The Phantom X features a new cast of characters. The protagonist is a red-hair boy in his 2nd-year of high school at Kokatsu Academy. Another playable character we know from the trailers is Suwa Arai , a cheerful and popular girl who's also a student at Kokatsu. The third and final main playable character is Luffy , the Morgana equivalent of the original P5. He looks like an Owl though we don't know much about his origin and whereabouts.

Since it's a gacha game, you can acquire or purchase new characters. One of the first gacha characters you can get is Yuki , a four-star female you can pull for free during the game's tutorial.

Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal characters like Ren, Ryuji, Morgana, Ann, Makoto, Haru, and Akechi are also gacha characters.  From Faz's Twitter, we know that Goro Akechi is a five-star character. Sadly, we don't have any details on other characters, but we will update this article once more info is available.

Persona 5 Getting Free-to-Play Mobile Spin-Off Featuring New Characters, Mascot

Publisher Perfect World and developer Black Wings have announced Persona 5: The Phantom X for iOS and Android. A free-to-play game with in-app purchases, playtests for the new Persona 5 spin-off will start on March 29 in China.

The Phantom X’s style and gameplay is exactly the same as in Persona 5, but the game’s user experience will be tailored for mobile gamers. Atlus is supervising the game’s development.

Persona 5: The Phantom X follows a new group of Phantom Thieves and focuses on the theme of “desire.” Like in Persona 5, the protagonist in The Phantom X can participate in classes during the school day and do activities like watching movies and playing baseball. After school, the new Phantom Thieves can infiltrate the Metaverse and the accompanying Palaces.

Designed by Atlus’s Shigenori Soejima, the protagonist wields a singular pistol in battle, and his currently unnamed Persona wields two shotguns with hook grooves at the ends. There are also what appears to be two female Phantom Thieves, one wielding a crossbow and the other a rifle.

Whereas Persona 5’s mascot was the black cat Morgana, The Phantom X’s animal mascot is an owl who wields dual tonfas as its weapon of choice. There are also some familiar characters, such as Igor, as well as what looks to be a brand new attendant in the Velvet Room.

In many respects, it looks basically the same as the original game, but with a handful of new characters.

No release date has been announced for The Persona 5: Phantom X yet. Atlus hasn't announced any big upcoming projects this year so far aside from the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection , and Project Re: Fantasy is still in development.

Persona 5 was first released in North America in 2017, earning widespread acclaim and a new generation of fans. Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal were all re-released on modern platforms recently, so fans are eager to know what’s next for the series .

You are an Ordinary High-School Student living out a fairly mundane student life at Kokatsu Academy in Tokyo. What seems to be a normal train ride home is disrupted when you suddenly awake in a mysterious otherworld, no less helped by a strange owl-like creature appearing before you. Under the guidance of this creature known as "Luffel", you discover that you are trapped in Mementos, a manifestation of humanity's subconscious wills and desires. At the risk of imminent death at the hands of hostile Shadows, you suddenly awaken to an awesome power - "Persona", your will of rebellion given form.

No sooner than you discover this power that you learn that the real world is being stifled by the warped desires of the corrupt and powerful. However, there is a beacon of hope: using the power of Persona, you can enter the Metaverse, the realm of the subconscious, and by invading the "Palaces" created from the twisted desires of corrupt humans, steal the "Treasures" located within and change peoples' hearts. Adopting the moniker "Wonder", you join in arms with others who share your power, forming a band of "Phantom Thieves" who seek to reclaim society from corrupt hearts and minds.

Persona 5: The Phantom X has the following tropes:

  • Actually a Doombot : In-Universe , any character recruited via the Velvet Room's gacha pull are this. Named "Phantom Idols" by Merope, they're stated to be cognitions who help aid Wonder and the Phantom Thieves in battle. Word of God even compares them to the cognitive selves of the Persona 3 and 4 protagonists fought in Royal 's challenge battles. This also applies to the Cognitive party members' Personas; dubbed as "Persona II" (also) by Merope, they're not the actual Personas of the person the cognition is based on, but are instead a Persona handpicked by Merope herself.
  • Adaptational Modesty : Due to censorship laws in China, several Personas were redesigned with more tame and chaste appearances. The most obvious offenders are Incubus and Lamia, the latter being virtually naked from the waist up and Incubus being entirely nude while sporting a, erm, Gag Penis for lack of a better word. In X , Incubus now wears shorts and Lamia has a tanktop. Bar far the one most affected by this trope is Mara , whose design definitely would not pass Chinese censorship laws and has a gold hat covering his phallic-shaped head, now resembling a mass of vines due to a lack of veins and the addition of leaves.
  • Alternate Universe : This game takes place in a world parallel to the original Persona 5 world. This alternate world is set in 2023 compared to the original's vague year.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different : Rather than follow one of the original Phantom Thieves like Joker, the game puts you in the shoes of a brand-new protagonist going by the codename "Wonder". Similarly, this goes for the rest of the Phantom Thieves, all of which consist of brand-new characters. The original Phantom Thieves are instead relegated to being cognitions who assist Wonder in battle, although the third beta heavily implies that they will eventually tie back into the story in some way.
  • The Persona series' Arc Words "I am thou, thou art I" is repeated by every Persona-user barring Luffel and the Phantom Idols during their Persona awakenings. Curiously, the Personas speak the first half whereas the Persona-users themselves speak the second half.
  • "Desire" comes up frequently and seems to be a common theme. The game's synopsis and Igor and Luffel mention how people in the real world don't seem particularly driven, whereas those like Wonder and Motoha (through their experiences in the Metaverse) are noted for having a strong desire, something Luffel wishes to nurture and grow.
  • Atrocious Alias : With the exception of the protagonist, Motoha, Luffel, and the original Phantom Thieves, the Phantom Idols summoned by the Velvet Room have questionable codenames in that they use their Real Name as an Alias , which defeats the point of Phantom Thieves trying to keep their real identities a secret. On the other hand, the Phantom Idols codenames are picked by Merope and are heavily suggested not to be the actual people, but rather cognitive clones made to appear familiar to Wonder.
  • Big Damn Heroes : A newly added cutscene in the third beta involves Wonder and Luffel being overwhelmed by Shadows in Mementos. When Wonder is knocked down and the situation begins to look bleak, Joker suddenly appears from nowhere and takes out several Shadows at once, then teams up with Wonder to perform a Highlight, destroying the remainder with a powerful strike. Before Wonder or Luffel have a chance to make sense of the situation, Joker disappears into thin air before their eyes, just as quickly as he appeared.
  • In addition to Adaptational Modesty above, certain Personas were redesigned to conform to Chinese laws. Bugs has the blood and skulls removed in addition to making the stomach fully intact without any stitches, making Bugs more like a simply monstrous teddy bear, and Hell Biker gets his skull head swapped with a helmet. Even Surt now wears a pair of shorts despite lacking visible genitals.
  • Wonder's Persona awakening now has a 2D animated cutscene as of the second beta test, just like Joker's in the original game. Unlike the Persona awakenings in Persona 5 , however, there is a distinct lack of visible blood when Wonder rips off his mask, as it's replaced by a brilliant sparkling light effect. Blood is not visible on any of the Persona awakenings for the other party members as well, although this is better obfuscated by convenient cuts and camera angles.
  • Break Meter : Unlike the mainline Persona games, strong enemies in this game have a break gauge next to their health bars, and they cannot be knocked down with super-effective damage until the gauge is depleted.
  • Breaking Old Trends : The Velvet Room's function in this game has changed drastically on account of the gacha mechanics. While it still acts as how you obtain new Personas by way of fusion, it's also how you recruit new party members, including the original Phantom Thieves.
  • The gameplay trailer ends on a cutscene of Joker crashing through a window with a corkscrew jump and striking a three-point landing, identical to how he escaped Sae's Palace in the opening cutscene of the original game.
  • Like in P5 , the opening segment sees a character informing players that the story is fictional and relations to actual persons and places are coincidental. Un like Igor, however, who asks players if they agree about the game being a work of fiction in order to play the game, the narrator warns players that "becoming part of the story" will lead to hardship and asks if they still want to play X .
  • Catapult Nightmare : In the third beta, the game opens with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts' infiltration of Sae's Palace, as in the original Persona 5 . However, this is soon rudely disrupted when Joker encounters A Glitch in the Matrix , followed by being attacked and killed by a hooded Wonder. The sequence ends with Wonder jolting awake in his bed before panning over to his smartphone, which now has the Metaverse Navigator app installed.
  • Central Theme : Whereas Persona 5 was about fighting against oppression and breaking free from your emotional chains and prisons, this game has the central focus of "finding your way in life" and chasing after your dreams and passions. The protagonist, Wonder, is known to not be very driven or passionate overall before discovering the Metaverse and becoming a Phantom Thief, and all of his teammates have their own goals and dreams that they hold themselves back from achieving for one reason or another. In comparison, all of the antagonists are people who tried and failed to achieve their dreams and, rather than try and make something out of their lives afterwards, chose to fall into the everyday flow of life and become "another fish in the sea", while also lashing out at those who show the potential to reach their failed dreams and trying to crush their spirits. The Velvet Room even takes the form of an aquarium to drive this theme home, showing off the flow of life as an ocean current and all the "fish" who have resigned themselves to follow it.
  • Defeat Means Friendship : Similar to Persona 5 Strikers , Shadows defeated in battle have a chance to become a Persona for Wonder to use in battle, unlike the negotiation mechanic in Persona 5 .
  • Demoted to Extra : Munehisa Iwae and Tae Takemi, two Confidants of Joker's in the main game, are relegated to being mere shop owners in P5X . Another one of Joker's confidants, Chihaya Mifune, shows up as a shopper at the 777 convenience store when Wonder is working there.
  • Dueling Player Characters : In the "Heart Stealing" beta, the game kicks off with a re-enactment of the original intro from Persona 5 , though it swiftly diverges where, after Joker dispatches the Shadows keeping him from escaping, he's suddenly attacked by a white-masked Wonder.
  • Luffel is more or less Morgana if he were an avian cartoonish being rather than a cat, who briefly serves as the fledgling Phantom Thieves' mentor and teaches them about the Metaverse, right down to his transformation pose being similar to the second Kamen Rider 's. He acts somewhat more professional and ominous than Morgana, however.
  • Gacha Games : P5X uses a near-identical gacha structure to Genshin Impact and Perfect World's other game Tower of Fantasy . Players can spend Soul Gems at either Igor to obtain new Phantom Thieves recruits with unique Personas or at Iwai's weapon shop to obtain new equipment.
  • Limit Break : Knocking down all enemies will produce the chance to execute a Highlight. Unlike All-Out Attacks or Showtimes, Highlights involve a single character performing a flashy cinematic attack to deal massive damage of a specific attribute to a single foe.
  • Meaningful Name : Merope calls the cognitive beings summoned by the game's gacha mechanics "Phantom Idols", in reference to how fans support their idols in real life as well.
  • Mysterious Stranger : Joker is this to the cast of X and especially Wonder. Early in the game, Joker shows up when Wonder and Luffel are struggling to defeat some Shadows. His assistance is brief, and he does not explain his appearance to the two before suddenly disappearing.
  • New Work, Recycled Graphics : Visually the game is identical to Persona 5 Royal , with the only major new additions being characters and locations such as the Velvet Room and Palaces. The "Heart Stealing" beta even reuses the same opening intro of the main game, albeit reworked to fit into X and diverging when Wonder suddenly shows up and attacks Joker as he's fleeing the casino.

the phantom x persona

  • Palette Swap : The gacha summon characters have alternative color variations, like black-and-white Noir and, infamously, cow-patterned Mona.
  • Recurring Element : Like the original Persona 5 , the first Palace and boss involves a former professional athlete who is targeting a future teammate specifically while also representing the Vice of Lust. However, while Kamoshida was a Hate Sink who was specifically targeting Ann due to seeing her as a sex target and represents Lust fully, Kiuchi's story is played slightly more sympathetically, and his link to Lust is more of a side element to his promiscuity and issues with women than his core motive, which is fueled by a vengeful grudge against Motoha for supposedly kicking off the ruin of his career.
  • Recycled Soundtrack : The game also lifts a significant portion of its music from Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal . New themes have been added in addition to returning themes, such as a new theme song and battle track.
  • Shout-Out : Similarly to Morgana in the original, when Luffel turns into his form that allows for travel in the Metaverse, he does a pose from Kamen Rider , with Luffel's being Kamen Rider Nigou's poses.
  • Under the Sea : In contrast to the prison cell block it was for Joker, the Velvet Room takes on the form of an underwater hallway in this game, with fish and even a whale drifting above Wonder and the residents of the room. Merope describes it as an "underwater tunnel dug into the sea of the mind".

What we have learned about Persona 5: The Phantom X mobile game so far?

What we have learned about Persona 5: The Phantom X mobile game so far?

The Persona series has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years, and is set to make its move to handheld devices as Perfect World, the developers behind Tower of Fantasy , are tackling the series with Persona 5: The Phantom X. The game recently saw beta access open in China over the Summer (March & August), however for those outside the East there may be a bit of confusion about exactly what the game is and what it offers. So here’s everything we know about Persona 5: The Phantom X so far.

the phantom x persona

The very basics

It was almost inevitable that, given Persona 5’s status as arguably the most popular entry in the series yet - and one partially, alongside Persona 4, responsible for elevating the series from cult classic to mainstream success - this is the title Perfect World would choose as inspiration for their game.

Perfect World is reportedly developing the game under the close auspices of original developer Atlus. Pans have however noted some changes to the designs of certain returning Personas, likely to comply with requirements in the Chinese market, but otherwise, the game seems to be a fairly faithful recreation of the mainline entries.

What exactly IS a Persona?

An original story and a cast of characters.

the phantom x persona

Despite the name, Persona 5: The Phantom X is not a straight mobile adaptation of the console game , rather it is one inspired by the setting and story. Given that many of the Persona games share little between them except the titular personas, this is not unusual. But we do know that the Phantom Thieves - the player and supporting characters from Persona 5 itself - appear as summonable, supporting “Phantom Idols” they are not playable themselves.

Rather, the game will feature a whole new cast, including the protagonist code-named “Wonder” (each Persona game has a technically ‘canonical’ character name but players can select their preferred name). As with other games in the series the focus is squarely on a group of high-schoolers at Kokatsu Academy in modern-day Tokyo that come into contact with the mysterious alternate world called the “Metaverse” (no, not THAT Metaverse) and are granted the power to use Personas as a result of their experience.

Wonder will also be accompanied by classmates Motoho Arai (Closer), Shun Kanou (Soy), the slightly less known-about Riko Tanemura, and a cuddly mascot character in the form of the transforming owl Ruferu (Cattle). As with other games in the series it looks as if the social link system - where players can form stronger bonds with supporting characters to unlock unique interactions and increase their abilities - will make a return.

But, aside from that, that's all we know about Persona 5: The Phantom X. So are you hotly anticipating the day this comes to an app store near you? Or not bothered at all? Let us know!

Persona 5: The Phantom X Third Closed Beta to Start Soon

Stephanie Liu

Perfect World announced the dates for the third closed beta of Persona 5: The Phantom X . Applications are open from January 3 to 12, 2024, and then the test will start on January 16, 2024.

The closed beta test will run from January 16-31, 2024. Players who get in will be able to download the client on January 15, 2024. As for the platforms, the game will be available on Android and iOS devices, as well as on Windows PC. Some differences between this test and the previous ones include a playable Morgana. He wasn’t available in the original test, which was in August 2023.

Here is a new trailer for the Heart Stealing Test, which is the name of the third closed Persona 5: The Phantom X beta:

You’ll be able to fight against Shadows in the Metaverse, hang out with your friends, and explore the city. Joker and the original members of the Phantom Thieves will also be there. It seems like him and Wonder meeting will be a plot point, but it’s unclear just how focus will be on Joker.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is in development for mobile devices and Windows PC. You will need some form of Chinese ID in order to register for this closed beta. Those in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau can also sign up for it.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Mobile Game Announced

the phantom x persona

Earlier today, an official account on the Chinese social media website Weibo was launched for a mobile game called “Persona 5: The Phantom X.”

The official website for the project can be found here . A secret page on the official website can be accessed, bringing users to Leblanc, where upon completion of mini-games artwork is unlocked.

Officially licensed by Sega with involvement from Atlus , the game is a free-to-play mobile RPG set to release in China for Android, Windows PC and iOS in the future. This is the first mobile game in the “Persona 5” series, called “Persona 5: The Phantom X” (and referred to as P5X), created by Perfect World Games’ Black Wings Game Studio.

Persona 5: The Phantom X key artwork.

The goal of P5X was not only to properly represent  Persona 5 ‘s stylized audio-visuals, but to also consider the mobile platform to create an experience accurately evoking its aesthetics.

The first availability to play the project will be on March 29th with an ongoing test application. Players who successfully complete the “Sneak Test” recruitment questionnaire will have a chance to play the game first.

Persona 5: The Phantom X main character with original Persona 5 characters behind him.

This game focuses on the theme of “desire,” telling a story of teenagers who awaken to the ability of “persona.” They meet, become acquainted, face difficulties and grow side by side. A mysterious long-nosed man in a strange room underwater, an owl that speaks human language, and a world that is very different from reality… all these seemingly unrelated things are connected by something…

P5X main character.

Protagonist (Code Name: Wonder)

Persona 5: The Phantom X protagonist (Wonder).

Luffy (Code Name: Cattle)

P5X character Luffy or Luffel.

Motoha Arai (Code Name: Closer)

P5X character Arai Suwa.

A new Velvet Room assistant of Igor’s.

The P5X Velvet Room attendant called Merope.

Atlus Development

Character designer Shigenori Soejima personally designed the new protagonist along with his own persona. As a senior character designer of the Atlus Art Team, the characters he designed for  Persona 5 are very popular among players. The protagonist specially designed for P5X this time was also carefully created after consulting a lot of the information based on this game’s theme.

The P5X protagonist Wonder with his persona Jánošík.

P5X reproduces the double life gameplay the series is known for. The player assumes the role of a student in the game and, during the day, the player goes to classes and works hard. In his spare time, he can play baseball, fish, or invite friends to watch a movie together, fully experiencing the joy of a bustling city life.

Whether at school or outside of it, the protagonist will meet various people with different personalities. By becoming friends with them and establishing a cooperative relationship, not only can you unlock abilities, but you’ll better understand people’s untold stories.

Metaverse Life

At night, the world changes with different themes, where players summon personas to engage in high-energy battles against enemies. The world is represented by the human collective unconsciousness, with the goal of correcting distorted desires.

Persona 5 Tactica's Toshiro and Erina Already Have a Perfect Way to Return

Posted: February 1, 2024 | Last updated: February 2, 2024

  • Toshiro and Erina brought new life to Persona 5 Tactica, offering a refreshing change from the Phantom Thieves.
  • The gameplay and art style of Tactica deviated from the mainline games, leaving an opportunity to depict Toshiro and Erina in a traditional Persona art style through another game.
  • Persona 5: The Phantom X could be the perfect game for Toshiro and Erina to make a cameo appearance, allowing fans to see alternative versions of the duo in a new spin on their story.

Persona 5 Tactica followed the Phantom Thieves through a journey in a different Metaverse. Joker and his friends are still central to Tactica 's story, but the game revolves around two new heroes, Toshiro and Erina. Toshiro is a politician who is likely to become Japan's next Prime Minister following the events of P5 , and Erina is a revolutionary in the Metaverse, leading a group known as the Rebel Corps. The duo and their stories lie at the heart of Persona 5 Tactica , and many fans are hoping for their return, which is a rarity for Persona spin-off characters. Fortunately, an upcoming title could be the perfect place for Toshiro and Erina to appear.

Persona 5 was released in Japan in the fall of 2016 before its international launch in April 2017, approximately eight years after its predecessor . Persona 6 rumors have been circulating for a while, and it is confirmed to be in development, but almost seven years later, little is known about it. The wait time for P6 hasn't surpassed that of its predecessor yet, but the franchise saw meteoric growth after Persona 5 was released, making it a very different situation for the franchise. To capitalize on the excitement around the series, there have been a wide variety of spin-offs in various genres, including a rhythm game, an action game, and now, a tactical strategy game. Another P5 spin-off is also on the horizon: Persona 5: The Phantom X .

Persona 5 Royal's Confidants Face a Fork in the Road to Persona 6

Toshiro and erina deserve to be in another persona game.

Persona 5 Tactica had life breathed into it by Toshiro and Erina . In recent years, many Persona fans have started to feel a sense of fatigue around the Phantom Thieves. The characters are beloved, but after a plethora of spin-offs and crossovers, it's time for a changing of the guard. P5T's decision to make the story revolve around Toshiro and Erina, with the Phantom Thieves aiding them, helped to keep the game engaging. Tactica 's gameplay and art style fit the context, but the game's presentation means that fans get a less in-depth depiction of the duo's appearance and potential abilities than they would for characters in a mainline game.

Persona 5 Tactica Had Its Limits

Persona 5 Tactica featured more stripped-down sets of abilities for its characters and their Personas. This was done to fit them into a new genre. While it was the right decision, Toshiro and Erina could have more abilities in a traditional Persona game. P5T 's art style is also a significant departure from the mainline entries. The chibi aesthetic is very expressive and works in context, but fans haven't gotten a chance to see Toshiro and Erina in a more traditional Persona art style.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Could Be The Perfect Game for Tactica Cameos

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a mobile game spin-off of the franchise. It is set in a parallel universe and is centered around an original cast of characters. It is currently being planned for release first in South Korea, and it is uncertain whether the game will come to the West. The Phantom X proposes what a different set of Phantom Thieves could be like, and as such, it would be the perfect place to bring back Toshiro and Erina. Persona 5 Tactica 's story is conclusive, but with The Phantom X being set in a different universe, the two could make an appearance in the game's story or be added to the pool of characters available as Cognitive Manifestations, a feature unique to P5X .

Persona 5: The Phantom X is the perfect game for cameos, and Toshiro and Erina deserve to be at the top of the list. Alternative versions of the pair could be introduced into the game with a new spin on their story. Alternatively, the two could receive a simple cameo, since even just seeing the characters in a more traditional Persona art style would be a treat for fans. For now, however, Persona fans have their hands full with the upcoming Persona 3 remake titled Persona 3 Reload .

4 Best Female Villains In Persona Games, Ranked

Atlus' Persona games are filled with fantastic villains, including some great, sympathetic, and terrifying female antagonists.

  • Persona's female antagonists are among the best in the franchise, showcasing compelling villainy.
  • Kuon Ichinose from Persona 5 Strikers is one of the series' best villains with a hidden mastermind persona.
  • Sae Niijima and Nyx Avatar also stand out as strong, multifaceted female villains in the Persona series.

While the Persona series is often praised for its characters, whether it's the ones that make up the main party or the numerous popular side characters, one aspect of the franchise that is particularly strong is the villains . Furthermore, Persona 's female antagonists rank up there among some of the best in the entire franchise, as these villainous women have tortured the casts of Atlus' RPG series for years.

Persona: The Best Final Bosses, Ranked

Whether they are humans who are manipulating some sort of events in the background or just straight-up monsters, these women have shown that villainy in this demon-catching franchise isn't just for the men. These characters easily rank up there as being some of the most compelling villains in this long and storied franchise.

4 Kuon Ichinose

An unexpected mastermind, persona 5 strikers.

It's fairly common for Atlus to produce multiple spin-offs and side games for the series, be it fighting games or even tactics games , but one of the best of these was Persona 5 Strikers . The spin-off's lead villain, a woman named Kuon Ichinose, is one of the best that the series has seen.

Initially established as one of the good guys, Kuon's mask is eventually stripped as she is revealed as the mastermind behind the game's catastrophic events. Her bright personality is replaced by a cold and emotionless demeanor, one determined to use everything and everyone she can to accomplish her quest.

3 Sae Niijima

A slow-building tension that reaches a boil, persona 5 royal.

Sae Niijima is one of the first characters that Joker and the Phantom Thieves meet in Persona 5 , as this prosecutor interrogates Joker during the game's intriguing framing device. She is an antagonistic force to the Phantom Thieves for the first half of the game, as each conversation with Joker between their palace visits becomes more heated.

10 Possible Returning Persona In Persona 5 Phantom X

She is also the sister of Phantom Thief Mokoto, adding an extra bit of complexity to her pursuit of them. As time goes on, however, Niijima becomes more of a threat, to the point that she gets her own palace that the party infiltrates, culminating in a boss battle with Shadow Sae that is one of P5's highlights and the perfect cap to Niijima's rivalry with Joker and the Thieves.

2 Nyx Avatar

Powerful threat with a memorable backstory.

The demon Nyx is a long-standing enemy in the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series, having first appeared in SMT3 and showing up in multiple spin-offs and mainline games. However, the villain's turn in Persona 3 is her crowning achievement, as her collision with pre-historic Earth gave birth to the Nyx Avatar, leading to the events of the game.

6 Things Persona 3 Portable Does Better Than Any Other Game In The Franchise

As the final boss of Persona 3 , she's a force to be reckoned with. Persona 3 is already a rather difficult game, but Nyx Avatar is a stern final test. The context of her creation and her somewhat sympathetic final message to SEES make her one of the franchise's absolute best antagonists.

1 Chidori Yoshino

Compex & sympathetic, persona 3 reload.

Persona is a franchise that tends to lend a sense of sympathy and relatability to its antagonists, as evidenced by one of the absolute best examples of that in Chidori Yoshino. She is a member of the antagonistic group known as Strega, one that carries out assassinations during a time known as the Dark Hour.

Over time, her association with Strega and her interactions with SEES create a fascinating conflict that Chidori is right in the middle of. Her doomed relationship with Junpei and the strong emotional context it provides is fantastic, elevating Chidori from what could have been a fairly standard villain into one of the best antagonists in the entire series.
