New Naples waterfront restaurant Syren opens and latest on Turtle Club: What to know

Portrait of Diana Biederman

The two most asked questions from readers over the past year: When is Syren opening? When is The Turtle Club re-opening?

The gent with answers is Peter Tierney, Syren’s co-owner. His partners in the stunning new waterfront restaurant are his wife and Naples native Jeanne Tierney, his cousin Dr. Bud Negley and Megan Miller.

Syren opened its doors to guests Jan. 18 at Naples Boat Club in what was formerly The Wharf Tavern.

The idea for Syren emerged when Tierney purchased a dock in his neighborhood for a boat he’d yet to acquire and kept eyeing the dark-ish draped restaurant. Though it wasn’t for sale, he worked with the Diodati family, who owned it, to acquire the intimate space.

Next up: Creating something with a different vibe than The Claw Bar and The London Club at Bellasera Resort, all operated by his team.

At Syren, marine is the theme from palette to palate.

Décor flourishes include floor-to-ceiling windows and an indoor-outdoor bar for bringing “the outside in.”

Inside, one of several focal points is a colorful hand-crafted shimmery wall mosaic positioned behind the sea bar counter inspired by the famous Japanese woodblock print, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” created in late 1831 by artist Hokusai.

“Like we did at The Turtle Club, the outside sets the tone. The inside design complements it, bringing it together.”

On the menu

Tierney, a longtime chef, whittled what was a 15-page list of ideas before finalizing the seafood-focused menu that includes hyper-local catches comprising different fish preparations.

Several selections take inspiration from Japan because that country “treats seafood with respect.” Examples include a spicy-sweet tuna stack, nigiri and miso-roasted butterfish. Chris Metzler, most recently Culinary Concept’s corporate chef tasked with Yabba, Pazzo and Chops for 27 years, leads the kitchen nightly.

Syren’s bar opens at 2 p.m., dinner service starts at 4 p.m. and runs until 9:30 on weeknights and 10:30 p.m. on weekends. Lunch is in the works.

Turtle Club update

Tierney is also a partner at The Turtle Club since its 1998 inception.

Working with Mike Moore and his son Mick Moore for the last 25 years, Tierney’s role was developing the heralded waterfront restaurant at Moore’s family-owned Vanderbilt Beach Hotel, created by Mike’s father, Robert, in 1959.

The hotel re-opened in late summer 2023 after Hurricane Ian’s decimation.

“It's a legacy property, and there's not much of that left in town anymore. In the truest sense, it's a real family operation for them. I know that Mick hopes that his children will come back and help run the place.”

The resort is also the "last of its kind in town"; the Watkins family sold their Naples Beach Hotel in 2021. LaPlaya was created by Naples hotelier Philip Francoeur in 1968 and has been corporately owned since 1994.

“We're getting ready to reopen Turtle Club, with the goal of mid-February,” Tierney said. He shared that the equipment, fixtures, and furnishings are ready, and inspections are going well.

The Syren Oyster & Cocktail Bar launches in Old Naples

The Syren 1

A local seafood restaurant launching this week promotes the marina lifestyle of Naples Bay in a waterfront location off the beaten path.

The Syren Oyster & Cocktail Bar, 909 10th St. S., Suite 106, is set to open Jan. 18 in a commercial unit of the Naples Boat Club, a full-service marina at the historic Old Naples waterfront on Naples Bay. The restaurant space most recently was Wharf Tavern Restaurant & Lobster House, which closed in 2021 after a 10-season run, and previously was Cafe La Mer & Bistro and Turner’s Lobster House.

The Syren, more than two years in the making, was ready to open when Hurricane Ian pushed 3 feet of bay water into the new restaurant in 2022.

syren yacht naples fl

“It set us back tremendously. This is a long project and we’re happy to have it open,” said Peter Tierney, who co-owns the new business and property with his cousin, Dr. Edward “Bud” Negley. They also own the Bellasera Hotel in Naples with The Claw Bar and The London Club. Tierney also is a partner in The Turtle Club at the Vanderbilt Beach Resort, but that waterfront restaurant is still temporarily closed and being rebuilt after it was devastated by the hurricane. The properties share a common culture based on “gracious hospitality.”

syren yacht naples fl

“After our meeting with the City Council on the 18th—which I’m sure will be a nonevent—we will open quietly and just open our doors for business, so we’re excited about it,” said Tierney, noting that The Syren will have about 50 seats outdoors initially.

The Syren also owns two boat slips in front of the restaurant, although earlier plans to offer dinner cruises on a yacht have been shelved for now.

“We are a stop for the water taxi, which is awesome,” Tierney said. “We were able to free up this dock, which is commercial. So, if you want to come here by water, you can. You can come by the water taxi too, which is great.”

The Syren will celebrate its bayfront location by serving cuisine focusing on seasonal regional and international seafood.

“Well, obviously, we always gear ourselves toward seafood, you know. We’re passionate about it. We wanted to create a place where we want to go eat, which is true,” Tierney said.

“We set out to do something a little bit different. We looked into a lot of different influences from Asian-style, Japanese-style techniques and local fish, local produce. It sounds like the same old story, but there’s a dish on the menu called Triggerfish Schnitzel. Man, it is amazing. It’s pan-fried like schnitzel style, and he makes a fried caper beurre blanc, and we have this beautiful farm arugula from Inyoni Organic Farm here along with a little pickled fennel on it.”

syren yacht naples fl

The Syren’s Keep, a specialty of the house, provides a nightly market fish selection.

“We’re getting whole fish in the round, so like yellowtail—whatever we can get locally,” Tierney said. “We’re trying to get unappreciated finfish, I say—so, sheepshead, snapper, yellowtail. We filet it, it’s on the grill, la plancha style, blackened, and it comes with pickled vegetables and rock shrimp rice on this platter with three different sauces [chimichurri, Caribbean remoulade and citrus-soy] that we make. It’s really clean, straightforward seafood for the most part.”

The menu also features a sea bar that includes fresh oysters, a spicy-sweet tuna stack, shrimp cocktail, a daily sushi roll and crab varieties; small plates with choices such as oven-roasted oysters, Mediterranean mussels and a cast-iron pimento cheese crab dip; and large plates such as Maine lobster bucatini, miso-roasted butterfish and chili-lime-roasted salmon. The bread service features pretzel rolls served with horseradish and grain mustard butter.

syren yacht naples fl

Many of the unique ideas came from Tierney, who cooked professionally as a chef for 20 years before he got into hotel and restaurant management. During that time, he created a manifesto of culinary ideas that served as the basis for Syren’s menu, which he calls a love note to Naples.

“I hear something, I see something, I write it down, then I modify it. It’s probably 15 pages long right now. It’s all future stuff I’d like to do,” he said. “This is a culmination of that. And I didn’t get to do it all because we physically can’t do it all but we’re going to get to it. So, this menu is really me on paper with the help of Chris Metzler—who is awesome, by the way.”

syren yacht naples fl

“Our whole company is chef-driven and we love talking about food, innovating, never stopping—we’re going to change this as often as we can,” he said.

By the way, Syren’s name is derived from the name of a ship in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” one of Tierney and Negley’s favorite films.

syren yacht naples fl

“We’re not open for lunch yet,” Tierney said. “We’re going to be developing a Saturday-Sunday brunch here, but we’re going to avoid lunch for a little bit while we figure that out.”

This City Was Just Named the Best Place to Live in the U.S. for 2024 — and It's Got Near-perfect Weather

Naples, Florida, is now the best place to live in the country, according to a new ranking.

syren yacht naples fl

Pola Damonte/Getty Images

With its pristine nine-mile coastline dotted with white-sand beaches, luxury resorts , fine dining restaurants, and golf courses, Naples is the ultimate Florida beach getaway , frequented by visitors and locals. And while the Gulf of Mexico city continues to draw a record number of travelers , Naples is also now the best place to live in the country, according to U.S. News's latest ranking.

The website ranked Naples fourth for desirability and third for its strong job market and high household income.

"Naples residents enjoy a high quality of life–the city ranks No. 4 for college readiness and No. 12 for crime – which could explain why so many Americans are eager to relocate to Southwest Florida," U.S. News pointed out.

The town has a population of about 20,000 and a median home value of $577,796. The real estate market has slowed after a few years of rapid growth, during which prices surged by over 30 percent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. And that's good news for buyers.

"Sales are steady, and inventory levels are higher in Naples than during the pandemic frenzy, which allows buyers to have more choices," Michelle Thomas, an agent at Premier Sotheby's International Realty , told Travel + Leisure .

A state-specific exemption (the "homestead exemption") may also lower the property's taxable value for full-time Florida residents — another incentive for out-of-state residents to relocate to the Sunshine State and Naples.

During the fall and winter months, the town attracts many retirees and "snowbirds" — the median age in Naples is almost 67. However, summer brings sweltering heat and hurricane season, which runs through the end of November. Storms, floods, and hurricanes have also caused insurance costs for homeowners to skyrocket, especially since Hurricane Ian in 2022. The annual cost of insuring a home in Florida is 421 percent higher than the national average .

However, this isn't slowing down real estate development. The city's beachfront will be home to a new luxurious residential community as part of the city's Miracle Mile, a 1.3-mile stretch of prime Gulf Shore coastline.

"Golf and resort lifestyle communities continue to be extremely popular, with many golf courses currently experiencing wait lists," Thomas explained. "Another popular type of property would be the waterfront properties, which allow you to have your boat in your backyard with easy access to fishing, dining by boat, and visiting our uninhabited islands for relaxation and shelling."

U.S. News also crowned Naples the best place to live in Florida . The city is followed by Sarasota and Pensacola, while in the general list of the best cities in America , Naples is ahead of Boise, Idaho, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

For its annual rankings , U.S. News considers the 150 largest metro areas in the country and analyzes data on cost of living, crime rates, well-being, job market, and overall value.

Heavy rains forecast for some areas of Florida as tropical wave approaches. See what to expect

Tropics expected to remain quiet for the next several days and here's what the outlook is now for the heat and heat advisories..

Portrait of Cheryl McCloud

While the tropics continue to stay quiet , you'll need to keep an umbrella handy this week.

The good news is that temperatures are expected to drop slightly, although heat advisories were issued for portions of Northeast Florida.

Flood advisories are in effect for a few areas in South Florida Monday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves , including one in the western Caribbean.

➤  Track all active storms

Tropical moisture may increase Florida's rain chances starting Monday, but, according to Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist at WeatherTiger, it won’t be anything organized. Saharan dust, high wind shear and other factors are expected to help keep the tropics quiet for the days ahead.

The peak of hurricane season runs from mid-August through mid-October. If your hurricane supplies are running low, or you haven't started an emergency kit, Florida's next sales tax holiday the end of August can help you save money.

Rain chances increase. Heat advisory issued for Northeast Florida

At least 2 to 4 inches of rain will fall over much of the Southeast states through the end of this week, according to AccuWeather .  The rain is associated with air from the Gulf of Mexico and southwestern Atlantic moving over the Southeast.

Florida may be spared from some of the worst rains, but a tropical wave of low pressure is increasing the chance for showers through Tuesday.

"As the tropical wave approaches and moves northwestward across the state from Sunday to Tuesday, an uptick in the showers and thunderstorms will occur with the potential for some to bring flooding downpours, strong wind gusts and even waterspouts near the beaches," said Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather lead hurricane expert.

The tropical wave is not forecast to develop into a tropical depression or a named tropical storm.

Temperatures expected today:

  • Pensacola : High 87. Storms will start off along the coast and offshore during the early morning hours with better storm coverage spreading inland through the afternoon. Showers and storms will be scattered to locally numerous across much of the area by Monday afternoon. Localized minor flooding will be possible,
  • Tallahassee : High 93. Another day of widespread showers and thunderstorms across the region. Storms will likely get another early start.
  • Jacksonville : High 85. Chances for showers and storms increase this afternoon and into the evening hours. Periods of heavy rainfall will be possible . Not everyone will get the rain. A heat advisory has been issued until 6 p.m. for parts of North and Northeast Florida. Heat index values up to 108 to 110 expected.
  • Daytona Beach: High 89. Increased chances of showers and storms through Tuesday. A few storms may be strong, especially from Orlando north. Wind gusts up to around 50 mph are possible, along with locally heavy rainfall up to 1-3 inches.
  • Melbourne: High 90. Band of dry air near Melbourne before sunrise forecast to move north. Disturbance will help to generate scattered to numerous showers and storms today. Lingering showers and storms will be possible through sunset, generally west of Orlando. Drier conditions will then prevail overnight.
  • Port St. Lucie: High 90. Expect scattered to numerous showers and storms today. Overnight, a few showers and storms will remain possible along the Treasure Coast toward morning.
  • West Palm Beach: High 85. A tropical wave will approach South Florida early this morning. Just over 2 inches of rain expected by this afternoon. Showers and storms could impact the East Coast metro areas beginning early this morning continuing through the late morning hours.
  • Naples: High 90. Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will be possible this morning and afternoon. The strongest storms could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Localized flooding may become a concern today for areas that receive repeated rounds of heavy rainfall. A few waterspouts cannot be ruled out today across the local waters.
  • Fort Myers: High 91. Another typical Florida summer day in store, characterized by hot and humid conditions ending with showers and thunderstorms. Main concerns would be frequent lightning, localized heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. Storms will likely develop late afternoon over South Florida and move northwest through the evening.
  • Sarasota: High 92. A clash between Saharan dust in mid levels of the atmosphere with moisture in the lower levels could bring some stronger storms to the area today. Lightning, localized heavy rainfall, and gusty winds are all possible. The dust is expected to dissipate Monday into Tues.day. Scattered to numerous showers/storms are expected each day this week.

Florida weather radar: Track storms as they move across state

Dirty rain in florida. saharan dust helping keep tropics quiet.

The Saharan dust and winds are keeping the tropics quiet now, but forecasters say that will likely change.

The dust will have another impact as the rain arrives.

"Because a significant amount of dust from the Sahara Desert is nearby, rain through this week may appear muddy and leave a residue on exposed surfaces in southern and central Florida," AccuWeather said.

"The favorable conditions that yielded Beryl are likely to return at some point in August, and that will probably yield an extended burst of hurricane activity ," said Dr. Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist at WeatherTiger.

"WeatherTiger’s real-time forecast remains for around twice the amount of storm activity in a normal hurricane season."

The next storm of the se ason will be Debby.

What is NOAA tracking in Atlantic basin?

The National Hurricane Center said no tropical cyclone activity is expected over the next several days.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves. Here's the latest update from the NHC as of  2 p.m. July 22:

  • Tropical wave 1: A tropical wave in the Atlantic is moving west at 11 to 17 mph.
  • Tropical wave 2: A tropical wave in the western Caribbean stretches from the Cayman Islands south across western Panama. It's moving west at 6 to 11 mph.

Who is likely to be impacted?

A tropical wave is expected to bring tropical moisture to Florida through Tuesday.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared. That advice is particularly important for what is expected to be a very active hurricane season.
