Quick and Creepy Cheesecloth Ghost Costume

DIY Cheesecloth Ghost Costume - scratchandstitch.com

This year we went classic for Halloween…as ghosts! We wanted to make a simple DIY ghost costume that would be comfortable to wear and quick to put together. These creepy cheesecloth ghost costumes were scary-easy to make and ended up being one of our favorite DIY Halloween costumes yet.

Creepy Ghost Costume

How to Make a Creepy Cheesecloth Ghost Costume

Both kids and adults will like dressing up in this eerie ghost costume. The costume works well for indoor or outdoor Halloween events. It’s so simple to make, that it makes a great last-minute costume idea. Even better would be a group of ghost costumes.

Scary Ghost Costume

  • cheesecloth (6–12 yards for adults, 3–4 yards for children)
  • markers (yellow, gray, brown, tan)
  • solid black fabric
  • sheer black fabric
  • baseball hat or visor
  • safety pins
  • black clothing

How to make an easy ghost costume - scratchandstitch.com

Create the Ghost Costume Hood and Face Mask

Cut enough sheer fabric to cover the whole face from ear to ear, over the forehead, and down to the chest. Using safety pins, attach the sheer black fabric to the hat forehead and on both sides near the ears.

Use the plain black fabric to create a hood over the rest of the head and down over the back of the neck. Safety pin the fabric onto the hat or visor. Pull the sides of the fabric together under the chin together to create a V, and pin together.

Make the Cheesecloth Look Old and Nasty

This step is optional, though we think it makes this ghost costume even better. Plus, it makes the cheesecloth smell nice. :)

Tea Stain Fabric

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add several tea bags and steep for 15-20 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and squeeze the remaining liquid from tea bags into the pot. Discard tea bags. Submerge the folded cheesecloth into the water and let sit for 20-30 minutes, or until the desired color is achieved (keep in mind that the cheesecloth will lighten some once it dries). Do this in several batches to achieve different tints of color. Remove the cheesecloth and wring out the liquid. Place cheesecloth into the clothes dryer until dry. The dryer will set the tea stain into the fabric.

With the cheesecloth still folded together, tie one end to something sturdy and stretch it out to work with. Using several colors of marker (yellows, browns, grays), make random marks across the fabric. Once colored to your liking, unfold the cheesecloth.

Turn the Cheesecloth into the Ghost Costume

The goal is to randomly layer cheesecloth over the head and shoulders so it fits like a shawl. Ripping and tearing the cheesecloth will not only make it look old, but it will also help it stay in place while wearing.

How to Make a Ghost Costume with Cheesecloth

Start by tearing a neck-hole in the middle of a piece of cheesecloth then drape over the head and body. Repeat. Tear some armholes, so the fabric hangs under the arms at the side of the body.

DIY Ghost Costume

Continue this same process until you like the way your creepy ghost costume look. Drape a piece or two over the head like a hood and use safety pins to hold in place. Once all of the pieces are hanging from the body, rip more random holes and strips to get that rugged, old look. You can also knot the cheesecloth pieces together if you need it to hold together better.

Ghost Costume Couple - scratchandstitch.com

Dress in all black clothing under the cheesecloth and tuck the sheer face covering fabric into the collar of the costume.

Make your ghost costume unique by adding fake spiders, lights, skeleton hands, or fake chains. See below for some creative ways fans of this ghost costume have made it stand out.

I am soooo happy to have found this. My son wanted to be a ghost and I didn’t want to do the sheet thing. Thank you for coming up with this scary awesome take on the haunted spirit. :)

How many yards of cheesecloth do I need for one outfit?

09.18.2015 at 2:09 pm

Hi Sai – I’d say you could use anywhere from 6-12 yards of cheesecloth for one ghost costume. I’d love to see a picture of your creation. :)

Thank you, and I’ll try to get one for you

This post is a lifesaver for us. My 3 year old son only wanted to be a ghost this year. Needless to say we searched every halloween store in town and couldn’t find anything for him. He is also a little guy so sizing is difficult as well. He just loves this scary ghost costume and we are so excited to go get all of the stuff to make it! Thanks for this really awesome and creative idea!!!

10.20.2015 at 1:00 pm

Yay! So happy to hear this. I would love to see a picture of how it turns out. Happy Halloween to you and your little ghost :)

10.22.2015 at 1:19 pm

Hello again! I wanted to ask you about how much cheesecloth did you use for your kiddos? Mine is 3 and is about 39in tall. Also if you could tell me where you had luck finding cheesecloth It’d be greatly appreciated!

10.22.2015 at 1:25 pm

Hi again :) We used about 6-12 yards for adult costumes so I’d say about 3 or 4 yards would be enough for your little guy. You can get cheesecloth at a fabric store like JoAnn Fabrics. It’s probably cheaper to have them cut it for you rather than buy in a package. Send me a pic!

' src=

10.29.2015 at 4:39 pm

I found mine at Walmart. It was like $5.00 for a package with 6 yards in it. I bought some black plastic spiders to hot glue to the cheesecloth too.

10.30.2015 at 8:35 am

Walmart! I never think of Walmart. Good idea. Thanks for sharing. :)

10.29.2015 at 4:34 pm

Hi:) I love this costume! My 6 yr old son wants to be a ghost for Halloween and I refused to do the ghetto sheet thing! I’ve looked everywhere for good ideas and had my mind set on one and actually got all the stuff to make it and then I found this one! It’s WAY more awesome and alot easier to make. I’m in the process of staining the cheesecloth right now. The only problem I’m having is if he’ll wear the fabric in his face. I’m hoping he will but I might have to use black face paint instead….we’ll see. I’m a little nervous about putting the costume together since I figured I’ll have to wait until Halloween day to put the cheesecloth on him BC if I do it now I’ll probably never figure out how to put it back together. It looks pretty easy and hard to mess up so I think we’ll be okay. I’ll send you some pics of how it turns out. Wish me luck:)

10.30.2015 at 8:34 am

Hi Katy! Glad to hear that you like the cheesecloth ghost, it’s so easy to make and comfortable to wear. Face paint sounds like a good idea if he doesn’t like his face covered. I’d love to see some pictures!

11.1.2015 at 1:17 am

Hi Cathi! Just wanted to let you know the costume turned out GREAT!!! He wore the fabric in his face and everything…..well, for a little while anyway…..we live in Florida and it was still 85 degrees when we started trick or treating so I couldn’t really blame him for not wearing it the whole time. He looked really good and got lots of compliments:) All thanks to you and your awesome creation! Thank you SO much for sharing the pics and directions. I have a picture I’d like to send you but can’t figure out how to do it(I’m a little electronically slow. Lol!). If you have an email address I can send it to or if there’s a better way to send it, just let me know and I’ll get it to ya. Thanks again!!!

11.1.2015 at 11:04 am

Hi Katy – Totally makes my day knowing that I could inspire some creativity, especially for my favorite holiday! I just sent you an email to send pics to. Can’t wait to see how it turned out. :)

Sent you a couple pics yesterday:) Let me know if you got them! Thank you!

We successfully made the ghost costume! It turned out great and he just loved it. Especially the scary no face part! Thank you SO much for the great idea and taking the time to post the directions. I do have a great photo to post but I’m not sure how to get it on here.

Hi Cathi, My 5 1/2 year old is so excited to be a ghost this year (last year he was a Ghostbuster, so it’s funny that he so adamantly wants to change teams this year! Haha). Anyway, I was wondering what type of hat you pin the fabric to. Is it a winter-type hat or a baseball type hat, or a different type of hat? Could I pin it to the hood of a hooded sweatshirt, or wouldn’t that be secure enough? We live in Michigan, so our Halloweens are usually pretty chilly, so I was leaning towards a winter-type hat! Thanks so much, and I hope you are still able to see comments on your old posts and reply by the time I need to make this costume!

09.26.2017 at 9:05 am

Hi Lindsey – Love that he made the switch from Ghostbuster to ghost. lol We used baseball caps. This makes it so the black fabric doesn’t sit right on the face making it a bit more comfortable to wear. You could always layer a knit hat or hoodie under to keep warm. We’re in Minnesota so I know what you mean by chilly Halloweens (or it could be 80°). Send me a picture! I’d love to see it :)

09.27.2017 at 7:32 pm

Thank you so much for your quick response and input, Cathi! I think that’s a great point to not have the fabric sit right on his face; that makes a lot of sense! I am excited to make it for him, and if it turns out cute/creepy, I will definitely send you a picture:)

' src=

10.23.2017 at 5:36 pm

You’re so creative! I saw your bee & beekeeper tutorial also–everything from scratch–super impressed!! I never could’ve figured that out lol Just wanted to say that and I enjoyed your other posts too! Keep up the awesome creativeness!!

Thank you and thanks for reading! :)

' src=

10.29.2017 at 11:53 am

Wanted to ask you about the “several batches” comment for achieving the desired color/tones. Does this mean repeat the whole boiling and steeping process with new water and tea bags?

10.29.2017 at 12:01 pm

Oh, or does it mean with separate pieces of cloth? Thanks again!

10.29.2017 at 1:27 pm

Hi Katie –

Excellent question! :) Each individual batch of cheesecloth will achieve a different tone depending on the amount of tea vs water. You can slightly modify the color by using more or less tea. You can reuse the same “tea water” and either add more tea bags to make a darker color or dilute the water for a lighter color.

Another option is to add all of the cheesecloth to the tea water and let it sit so the tea stains the cheesecloth. Then after several minutes remove a few pieces and let the remaining pieces continue to take on the tea stain.

Let me know if that makes sense. And send me a picture of your costume, I’d love to see it!

11.5.2017 at 7:32 pm

I followed your instructions here and created spooky ghost costumes for my son and I this year… What a hit! We got so many compliments and we loved being spooky! Thanks for the fabulous idea.

11.6.2017 at 12:53 pm

So glad to hear :) Please send me a picture of the two of you, so excited to see how they turned out. [email protected]

' src=

10.4.2018 at 4:25 pm

How do they see

10.6.2018 at 12:27 pm

Hi Liz – The fabric that covers the face should be a see-through black fabric. When the fabric is laid over the brim of a hat or visor (so it doesn’t touch the face) it very easy to see. :)

' src=

10.23.2018 at 11:11 am

Hi Cathi! Just stumbled over your DIY costume, and now I am working on it. Wasn’t that easy to find cheese cloth, actually, first I had to find out what it’s called in German. Found some at a Farmers online shop, they cover plants with that stuff. I colored it with coffee, uhm, the waste of it after you brewed. One night and it looks fine. Like 200years rotten. My cat already helped me destroying the fabric and make holes with her paws. Tomorrow I will go on finishing it with UV light colors for some ecto plasma effect, ad chains, spiders, insects and a rope.

10.23.2018 at 12:54 pm

Hi! I love that you used old coffee and your cat to get the old and creepy effect. Send me a photo! I can’t wait to see it :)

' src=

10.27.2018 at 1:52 pm

Possibly a dumb question but any idea what ‘grade’ cheesecloth or will they know @ Joann’s? I ordered some online and it looks like linen! It says it’s grade 90 ‘very fine mesh’ so that seems wrong!

10.27.2018 at 8:18 pm

Hi Kristin – I would say go with the opposite of fine. And pick the cheap stuff. (I just answered your email too). Send pics!!

' src=

10.31.2018 at 9:36 am

I just wanted to thank you because I used this costume this year and people loved it. First prize at the work contest as well. I tagged a photo of it to your instagram. Your instructions were so helpful! (As well with the photos of other variants with spiders and chains).

My personal addition was 4.5″ platform shoes – added a bit more menace to my 5’5″ frame!

10.31.2018 at 12:13 pm

Yay! I’m so glad you made this it turned out awesome!! The reactions from others is one of the best parts about this costume. Congrats on first place 😁 Can I share your costume here and on IG/FB?

Absolutely!!

' src=

10.19.2019 at 9:53 am

What lengths and how many pieces of cheesecloth did you use for an adult? Sorry not creative so i need help step by step if I’m going to be the oldest ghost (lol)

10.20.2019 at 2:52 pm

Hi Allan – I would use 6-12 yards for an adult costume should do it.

Send me pics of your costume! :)

' src=

10.21.2019 at 5:44 pm

Doing this for my 4 year old this year. I’ll try to remember to send you pics!

10.22.2019 at 2:51 pm

Yes! Please do. :)

' src=

10.25.2019 at 5:13 am

I was wondering. I got a diferent kind of fabric it is still dirty looking but it is not cheesecloth it still rips in that messy kind of way and it is not heavy. And I am using a black shirt instead of black fabric…Hope it works

10.25.2019 at 7:20 pm

Yes! The goal is dirty and old so it sounds like it would work to me. Send pics :)

' src=

10.30.2019 at 7:39 pm

Do you cut the cheesecloth into pieces before tearing the holes to put it on? Or keep it as one long piece and fold back and forth? And how do the cheesecloth pieces stay on the hood? Thanks!

10.31.2019 at 7:54 am

Hi Maira – Cut (or rip) the head hole only. Then pull, rip, and tear the cheesecloth to get the desired look. Draping over the head in layers will help it stay in place. You can also tie areas together to help hold it where you want (like under the arms). I hope that helps! Send me pics of your final ghost, I would love to see how it turned out. :)

' src=

10.31.2023 at 10:07 pm

This was perfect, my 5 year old couldn’t have been happier with the way his costume turned out and with it being so cold tonight we were able to hid extra layers underneath to stay nice and toasty! Thank you so much for the guidance, everyone loved our little spector.

11.1.2023 at 9:29 am

I love hearing stories like this! As a Minnesotan, I know the importance of making a costume that’s ready for all temps. This costume has been such a hit with kids and those who see it out-and-about. Thank you for sharing! :)

' src=

11.1.2023 at 5:47 pm

I have never gotten such amazing feedback on a costume! I didn’t even have time to colour the cheesecloth! I dressed in black, and took 3 packs of cheesecloth, a black hat, and some black material to work and assembled it in the bathroom that morning. I was a hit! My hands sold it. I used old black gloves, 10 straws and electrical tape to make long pointy fingers. Thanks for the idea!

11.3.2023 at 11:36 am

Oh this is so wonderful to hear! This easy costume is always such a hit for makers and viewers. I would love to see pics!! :)

How to Make a Ghost Costume

A ghost costume is perfect if you’re looking for a spooky costume for Halloween or a costume party. Even better, it’s super easy and affordable to make the costume yourself!

Make a Traditional Ghost Costume

Step 1 Cut the brim off a light-colored baseball hat.

  • The hat should be as light in color as possible, or people will be able to see it through the bed sheet that will be draped over your head.

Step 2 Drape the sheet over the head of the person wearing the ghost costume.

  • The costume should drag just a little to create a floating effect, but not so much that the person wearing it trips.

Step 3 Mark the center of the person's head on the sheet with a black marker.

  • Pin the sheet around the hat; you'll need to use about three or four more pins.
  • If you don't want the black dot on the top of the head to be so noticeable, you can flip the sheet over. You should still be able to see where the mark on the top of the head is, but it will be less visible to onlookers.
  • You can also just cover the mark with white-out. Or, use a fabric marker pencil that fades (invisible fabric markers).

Step 6 Cut out the eye holes.

Make a More Elaborate Ghost Costume

Step 1 Drape a sheet over the head of the person wearing the costume.

  • You can also put the makeup on the person's neck, since it will be visible.

Step 13 Draw gray circles on the person's eyelids and under his or her eyes.

Ghost Costume Ideas

Spirits, poltergeists, phantoms… or, more commonly, ghosts have piqued the interest of the human mind for ages. Perhaps it’s the allure of the unknown that attracts us. Maybe it’s our desire to connect with those that have left this spiritual plane. Or maybe it’s all the spooky horror movies that bring us thrills at the local movie theater. Whatever the reason, we can never seem to get enough of ghosts, especially during Halloween time. After all, it’s the perfect time of year for supernatural activity and it’s also the perfect time to dress up in one of our ghost costumes. That’s right, perpetuating the paranormal aura that comes with Halloween has become a tradition, where kids dress up in every manner of ghoulish outfit. It just wouldn’t be Halloween if the usual suspects, like skeletons, zombies, and ghosts weren’t roaming the streets, and we carry a great selection of costumes for both adults and children to help continue this tradition. This handy guide will help you decide which one to choose for your next Halloween of costume party experience.

When people say the word “ghost”, so many different images might pop up in people’s heads. Scream Costumes

Wes Craven has crafted some of the wildest thriller moves of the last few decades. Of course, he invented the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, where Freddy Krueger terrorized young kids in their dreams. He dabbled as a producer in Dracula movies and even as an actor in Jay and Silent Bob movies. He also struck gold with MTV’s classic horror film, Scream. In the classic scary movie, a mysterious killer ends up murdering a bunch of victims in a small town. The killer in that movie used a Ghost Face mask to hide his identity until the very end. That makes the Ghost Face look a great way to dress up when selecting a ghost costume.

Scream Costume

Ghosts always have a glowing, white ethereal appearance. The perfect way to get that kind of look isn’t by throwing a bunch of flour on your face. It’s a makeup kit! This particular ghost makeup kit gives you all the tools you need to lighten up the look of your face to create a style that comes straight from the afterlife. Just pair it up with any of our scary costumes and you can be off scaring unsuspecting victims in no time.

Ghost Wig

Just because you plan on becoming a dead spirit doesn’t mean you have to give up your hair! If movies with spirits in it have taught us anything, it’s that some of those ghosts have some pretty rocking hair. Just look at Patrick Swayze in the movie Ghost. This ghost wig is an accessory for women that will help you have a great hairstyle while you dress up as a ghastly visitor from the realm of the dead!

All you have to do is drag it around like the late Jacob Marley to add a creepy effect to your look.

This ghastly accessory is just one of our scary masks that has a blood curdling effect. The Ultimate Guide to Scary Ghost Costumes for Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about your costume. If you're someone who loves all things spooky and supernatural, a scary ghost costume might be the perfect choice for you. The iconic ghost costume has been a staple of Halloween celebrations for decades, and it continues to be a popular choice among party-goers of all ages.

Scary Ghost Costume

Why Choose a Scary Ghost Costume?

There are several reasons why a scary ghost costume is a fantastic choice for Halloween:

  • Classic Appeal: The ghost costume is a classic Halloween staple that never goes out of style. It's instantly recognizable and can be easily customized to suit your personal preferences.
  • Ease of Costume: A ghost costume is incredibly easy to put together. All you need is a white sheet and a pair of scissors to create the iconic draped look. It's a great last-minute option if you're in a pinch for time.
  • Versatility: While the traditional ghost costume is simple, there are countless ways to add your own unique twist. You can experiment with different fabrics, makeup effects, and accessories to create a one-of-a-kind look that suits your personality.

Tips for Creating an Epic Scary Ghost Costume

If you want to take your scary ghost costume to the next level, follow these tips:

  • Choose the Right Fabric: While a standard white sheet will do the trick, consider opting for a sheer or gauzy fabric to add an ethereal touch to your costume. This will give you an otherworldly appearance as you float through the Halloween festivities.
  • Add Makeup Effects: Don't forget about your face! To make your ghostly transformation complete, use pale foundation or white face paint to give yourself an eerie complexion. You can also experiment with dark eye makeup or use special effects makeup techniques such as contouring and shading to create hollowed cheeks or sunken eyes.
  • Create Tattered Edges: To enhance the spooky factor of your ghost costume, tear and fray the edges of your sheet. This will give it a worn and aged look, making you appear like a long-lost spirit from another era.
  • Add Accessories: While a ghost costume can be striking on its own, adding accessories can take it up a notch. Consider carrying a prop such as a lantern or an old book to add to the haunted vibe.
  • Experiment with Lighting: If you're attending an event with dim lighting, consider adding LED lights or glow sticks under your sheet to create an eerie glow. This will make you stand out in the darkness and give your ghostly presence an ethereal quality.

Scary Ghost Costume Ideas

If you're looking for inspiration, here are some scary ghost costume ideas:

The Victorian Ghost

Victorian Ghost Costume

The Victorian era is often associated with hauntings and ghostly apparitions. To create a Victorian ghost costume, opt for a long white dress or gown with lace detailing. Add antique accessories such as cameo brooches or lace gloves to complete the look. Style your hair in loose curls and apply pale makeup for an authentic Victorian aesthetic.

The Creepy Child Ghost

Creepy Child Ghost Costume

Children ghosts have long been associated with horror movies and urban legends. To create a creepy child ghost costume, wear ragged clothing that's too big for you and add dirt stains for an aged effect. The Phantom Bride

Diy ghost costume – how to make a stunning ghost halloween costume.

October 16, 2020 by Janice

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here .

This DIY Ghost Costume is stunningly spooky and easy to make. Girls will love showing off this costume when trick-or-treating or attending a Halloween party. Keep reading to find out how to make a ghost Halloween costume for kids, teens, and women.

ghost costume with hood

I love making Halloween costumes for our girls. Each year I work with our girls to design costume ideas and I love seeing their creativity grow as they sketch out their plans and we turn them into reality.

Last year, my 14-year-old niece Julia decided to make a pretty ghost costume with a cape full of flowing fabric and a haunting hood. We created this unique and fabulous DIY Ghost Costume and I’ve updated the tutorial for this Halloween season with more details on how to make the cape.

Teenage girl wearing a pretty, white, flowing ghost costume for Halloween. Text on image reads "DIY Ghost Costume - See How To Make It."

UPDATE: See Part 2 for a detailed tutorial on how to make the handkerchief skirt and torn sleeve top.

How To Make A Ghost Costume

For our costume, in addition to our hooded cape, we sewed a handkerchief skirt and a cowl neck top with long, shredded sleeves.

But if you are in a hurry, or you don’t have a sewing machine, you can just make the hooded cape and use a store-bought skirt and top. While it is faster to use a sewing machine to make the cape, you can definitely sew the cape by hand.

DIY ghost costume with hooded cape

You can see how to make the handkerchief skirt and torn sleeve top in part 2 of our tutorial.

In this post, we will focus on how to make the ghost cape.

We are thrilled with how well our ghost costume turned out.

The organza fabric we used for the hooded cape gives the costume a shimmering, luxurious quality.

We were going to make the cape from sparkling white tulle but opted for organza instead. I am so glad we did. I love how the cape almost glows in the light.

DIY Ghost Costume - How To Make A Ghost Halloween Costume for Teen Girls

One of the challenges with making a DIY ghost costume is that it can block vision, making it hard for kids to see while trick or treating.

Since this ghost costume uses a hood that doesn’t cover your face, it’s much safer for kids or teens to wear while out on Halloween night.

Handmade ghost costume with a flowing white cape

For our version of this ghost costume, we wanted the cape to be extra long and flowing for our Halloween photoshoot. But to make it more practical for trick-or-treating or wearing to a Halloween party, we would recommend you make the cape shorter so that it is ankle length or use safety pins to pin it up.

costume view from the back - organza cape shimmers in the light

The design of this DIY ghost costume also allows you to wear it without the cape for a different look. If you are at a party or at school, you can remove the cape and still be ghostly.

How to Make a Ghost Cape Tutorial

For our ghost cape, we used a white shimmery organza.

I had actually bought a sparkling white tulle, but we decided to use this organza that I had in my fabric stash because it made the hooded cape look so luxurious and gorgeous.

The amount of fabric you will need for your cape will depend on your height (or the height of your child) and how long you want your cape to be. We wanted our cape to trail behind and blow in the wind for our photoshoot, so we made ours extra long.

If you are making your cape for a child, you won’t want it to trail behind as much as ours did.

We used about 3½ yards of organza for our cape.

Ghost Costume Supplies

  • White organza — 2 to 3½ yards, depending on cape size
  • Ribbon — 1-1½ yards
  • Brooch or clasp (optional)
  • White thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine or hand sewing needle

DIY Ghost Costume Instructions

Step 1 – take measurements.

In order to determine the size of your hood and the length of your cape, you will need to take some measurements.

For your hood:

Measurement A – the “height” of your hood: Measure from the middle of the top of your head to the top of your back and add 1-3 inches, depending on how oversized you want your hood. Then, since your fabric will be doubled, times that number by 2. We made our hood very big, so the fabric width was 36″, (15″ plus 3″ and then doubled.)

Measurement B – the “depth” of your hood: Measure from the middle of the back of your head to the middle of your forehead and add 1 inch if you want a large hood. Again, since your fabric will be doubled, times that number by 2. Our fabric length was 24″, (11″ plus 1″ and then doubled.)

So you will need a piece of fabric that is Measurement A x Measurement B. In our case, that would be 36″x24″.

For your cape:

Measure from the bottom of your neck to the floor and then add as much as you want for extra length. Julia’s measurement was 54,” but we made her cape 85″ long.

Our organza was 60″ wide, from selvage to selvage. We wanted the raw look of the selvage, so we simply left our fabric width uncut.

So the dimensions of our cape fabric were 85″ x 60″.

Step 2 – Cut Hood Fabric

The KEY to making the hood of your DIY ghost costume is to fold it in fourths before you cut.

Fold your fabric widthwise and then lengthwise, so the front of your hood will be on the fold. (See photos below.)

So in our case, we have our fabric folded up from the bottom at least 12 inches and then we have folded it in from the side (hotdog style) at least 18 inches.

how to make a ghost cape

(Note: In the above photo, my original pattern/toile pictured is larger than my final pattern. But this is the only photo I have that shows how I folded my fabric.)

You can cut yourself a hood pattern shape as I did, creating a curve that drops lower at the front of the neck, or you can simply cut a rectangle and then just round the top back of the hood.

how to make a ghost cape tutorial

Place your pattern with the front opening along the bottom fold and the top of the hood along the left fold so that the front of the top of the hood is on the double-folded corner.

Step 3 – Sew Hood

Pin hood to keep the fabric from slipping.

Sew a curved seam from the midpoint of the top of the hood to the bottom of the neck/top of the back.

how to sew a ghost cape

To finish our seams, I serged the seam allowance. If you don’t have a serger, you can trim your seam allowance and use a zig-zag stitch along the raw edges to keep the fabric from fraying.

DIY ghost costume tutorial

Step 4 – Cut Cape Fabric

If you haven’t already, cut the rectangle of fabric for your cape.

Since our cape is not lined and is just one layer of organza, all I had to do was cut one large rectangle.

Our fabric was 60″ wide and so I cut a rectangle that was 85″ x 60″.

We left all of the edges of our DIY ghost costume raw since we liked the look of the selvages and the raw edges appeared more “ghostly.”

Step 5 – Attach Hood to Cape

Before sewing the hood to the cape, you will need to gather the fabric of the top of the cape so that it is the same width as the bottom of the hood.

Sew two or three basting stitches along the top raw edge of the cape. Pull the bobbin threads to gather the fabric, distributing the gathers evenly until the fabric is the same width as your hood’s bottom raw edge.

ghost costume tutorial

Pin the raw edge of the bottom of the hood and the top raw edge of the cape right sides together.

how to make a ghost cape tutorial

Stitch together.

ghost costume tutorial

Try on your cape and check fit.

If your sizing is correct, you can finish the seam. To finish my neckline, I serged the seam allowance. If you don’t have a serger, trim your seam allowance and use a zig-zag stitch along the raw edges to keep the fabric from fraying andy tidy the seam allowance

Step 5 – Finish with Ribbon and Clasp

Finish the inside of the neckline seam by stitching a soft ribbon along the seam to cover the seam allowance and make the cape neckline more comfortable against the skin.

You can use the ribbon to tie the cape or use a brooch or clasp as we did.

EASY DIY SCARY GHOST COSTUME

by Katelyn Masters

easy last minute scary kids ghost costume DIY

This ghost costume is a delightfully creepy get-up for kids and toddlers and it couldn’t be easier to make. It’s also affordable using just a few easily found items.

easy last minute scary kids ghost costume DIY

Now a days it seems like all the kids dress up as superheroes, princesses, or comic book villains for Halloween, but I’m a purist, favoring the classic cast of characters: witches, pumpkins, ghosts, zombies, and vampires. And if not old school, at least something scary! Last year my son was Georgie from It and boy was it well received during trick-or-treating! Even little kids passing by would spot him in his yellow rain jacket and red balloon and yell “I know who he is!!”

So this year I thought I would dress my 3 year old up as a spooky ghost since one of his favorite games is running around the house with a blanket over his head yelling “boOOoooOOoo.” For this costume, I wanted it to be easy, affordable, no-sew and equally wearable in warm and cold weather (that deciduous forest climate’s a beast!).

easy last minute scary kids ghost costume DIY

To make this costume for your little one, follow my directions below. You can even click on the links to add the needed items right to your Amazon shopping cart, although many items you might already own.

  • BLACK PANTS *
  • BLACK LONG SLEEVE SHIRT (OR SWEATSHIRT)*
  • BLACK KNIT GLOVES *
  • BLACK SHOES *
  • WHITE FACE PAINT
  • MAKEUP APPLICATOR SPONGE *
  • MATTE BLACK EYE SHADOW *
  • WHITE HALLOWEEN GAUZE
  • DOUBLE-SIDED FASHION TAPE

*You might already own this item! No need to repurchase if so.

  • Dress kid in black clothes and shoes.
  • Apply white face paint to face using makeup applicator sponge, leaving two big circles around eyes. Using another sponge, apply black eyeshadow in circles around eyes.
  • Take gauze package and unfold all the way. Drape the completely unfolded single layer of gauze over the child’s head with one end just barely grazing the floor and the other end touching the floor with an excess of fabric.
  • Cut off the excess fabric to save for a second, shorter layer of gauze.
  • Gather gauze underneath chin, pinch together, and apply a small piece of the double-sided fashion tape to secure. This will make a hood.
  • Next, take the gauze from the right shoulder, cross it over the belly and bring it to the left side of the kid. Pinch and secure with another piece of fashion tape placed slightly in front of the armpit. Do the same to the other side, this time bringing the gauze from the left shoulder to the right side.
  • Now, with scissors, cut a small slit starting about two inches below the child’s shoulder and trailing a few inches down, just enough to let his arm out through the hole. Do the same on the other side.
  • Bring back that excess gauze from step 4. Just like with first layer, drape over head and pinch the fabric under chin and adhere with tape. Allow the ends to flow freely.
  • Trim off the excess fabric at the bottom of the first layer, so it hits just above the ground in the back and cut it slightly above the toes in the front so your child won’t trip. Then, cut a few upward slits to make the ends look more raggedy.
  • Done! Add the gloves, grab a bag, and hit the streets for some good old fashioned trick-or-treating.

easy last minute scary kids ghost costume DIY

What I like about this costume, like last year’s Georgie costume , is that we can continue wearing the clothing components long after Halloween and you might even already have the black shoes, black shirt and black pants for this ghost costume, which would really cut down the cost. Heck, you could even reuse the gauze as a Halloween decoration, draped over the mantel or a table next year.
