David Pascoe - Biography

David Pascoe is a second generation marine surveyor in his family who began his surveying career at age 16 as an apprentice in 1965 as the era of wooden boats was drawing to a close.

Certified by the National Association of Marine Surveyors in 1972, he has conducted over 5,000 pre purchase surveys in addition to having conducted hundreds of boating accident investigations, including fires, sinkings, hull failures and machinery failure analysis.

Over forty years of knowledge and experience are brought to bear in following books. David Pascoe is the author of:

  • " Mid Size Power Boats " (2003)
  • " Buyers’ Guide to Outboard Boats " (2002)
  • " Surveying Fiberglass Power Boats " (2001, 2nd Edition - 2005)
  • " Marine Investigations " (2004).

In addition to readers in the United States, boaters and boat industry professionals worldwide from nearly 80 countries have purchased David Pascoe's books, since introduction of his first book in 2001.

In 2012, David Pascoe has retired from marine surveying business at age 65.

On November 23rd, 2018, David Pascoe has passed away at age 71.

Biography - Long version

These are "reviews", not surveys, and bear no resemblance to our survey reports.

We do not publish the results of the surveys that we perform. Please note that the purpose of these reviews is educational, to help you discern the differences in quality among boats generally. They are not offered as a means to help you evaluate any particular boat builder. We have no other reviews than those posted.

Please read the Introduction which summarizes the basis of these reviews: Boat Reviews Introduction

Affordable Boats

The Perfect Boat

Our boat reviews are unlike any others you'll find on the Internet. They are not marketing gimmicks nor intended to sell you a boat. The primary reason we write these reviews is educational.

Many people are disappointed that they can't search the Internet and find reviews of the boats they are interested in. First, you need to understand that over the years there are thousands of builders building tens of thousands of different models of boats. This means that it's impossible for even a large corporation to cover them all, yet alone a small fraction of them.

Evaluating a boat is terribly time consuming and the only reason we are able to do it is through our normal survey business which makes these boats available to us.

We do not publish the results of surveys. While our reviews are often derived from surveys, they are not surveys. Boat surveys do not contain opinions; surveys are about facts. A review essentially constitutes the opinion of the reviewer. We are often accused of being opinionated, but that's what reviews are all about. Opinions.  People sometimes ask, "Why aren't your reviews more balanced?" Or they say, "Why are you always comparing every boat to top of the line boats like Hatteras, Bertram, etc.?" Norwegian Boat Builder and Marine Tech Startup Launch ‘Ripple Boats’

pascal yacht

Norwegian boat builder Frydenbø Marine and startup Pascal Technologies have joined forces to launch Ripple Boats , a long-range electric boat brand promising fun without compromising on usability, experience or the environment.

pascal yacht

Sharing a collaborative vision for the future  of boating, Frydenbø Marine and Pascal   are building a new electric day boat with  global ambitions. Together, they are  pooling their expertise, resources, and  shared passion for the environment to  launch Ripple Boats.

Frydenbø Marine is one of the largest boat  producers in the Nordics with their own  factory in Poland, covering brands such as  Nordkapp, Sting, and Airborne boats, in addition to distribution for Zodiac. The Norwegian boat builder boasts a storied heritage, spanning generations and renowned for its expertise in the marine industry. With Frydenbø’s partnership, Ripple has guaranteed access to high quality manufacturing capacity, and can launch an asset light company at high speed and low investment cost.

Oslo-based Pascal, on the other hand, is a fast-growing marine tech startup developing an energy-efficient solution for leisure boats based on an air cushion principle. Air is pumped between the hull and water, which significantly reduces the water resistance and thus extends range considerably without the need for complex technology. Pascal Technologies recently raised an impressive € 4.6 million (53MNOK) in a funding round led by Ocean Zero LLC.

A sustainable brand focused on fun

Ripple Boats exists to make boating sustainable, whilst simultaneously putting fun at the centre of the experience. The brand will design and build the next-generation of long-range electric boats for the recreational market, incorporating the Pascal innovative air cushion technology that extends range without compromising safety or usability.

The first model will be a 10m electric day cruiser, designed by award winning designer Thorup Design. The boats have been meticulously designed by the Norwegian studio to cater to a wide range of water-based activities that families and friends can enjoy. Spacious and configurable  seating arrangements, user-friendly technology (automatic anchor handling, remote monitoring, over-the-air updates), and advanced safety features will ensure that the modern-day boater can relax on the water without worry. The whole ethos of the brand will be about creating a boating experience that is simple, easy and low maintenance.

Commenting on the launch of Ripple Boats, CEO Stian Gulla said:

“I’m very excited to announce the launch of Ripple! What’s truly unique about us in the startup scene is our ability to combine innovative, range enhancing technology from Pascal with the extensive industry experience and manufacturing assets of Frydenbø, enabling us to quickly bring a unique and high quality electric boat to market. Over the coming years we aim to build a series of models in the 6-11 metre range, with a focus on international sales and not just in our “home market” of Scandinavia.”

pascal yacht

“The leisure boat industry and electrification is at an inflection point. Consumer sentiment is changing, battery costs are coming down and investment in the space is growing rapidly, both from established players and startups. Ripple brings the combination of an innovative and fast-paced startup with the reliability and quality of an experienced boat builder, and I’m thrilled to show what we can build.”

As the first electric boat brand born from the collaboration of an esteemed boat builder and an innovative startup, Ripple Boats represents the convergence of expertise, innovation, and environmental consciousness.

Q&A: Pascal Bredin of Seal Superyachts Tahiti

pascal bredin 140

Pascal Bredin is General Manager of Seal Superyachts Tahiti and a passionately biased promoter of the archipelago as a superyacht destination. The Tahitian native has lived and worked here his whole life, "the last places in the world where you can anchor by yourself for days on end with nobody else around."

During a discovery trip organized by Tahiti Tourism and Tahiti Private Expeditions, we sat down for lunch with Pascal at the idyllic Coco Beach and chatted about his role as a yacht agent and his love of the 118 islands he calls home.

When did you start out in the yachting industry?

I was born and raised in French Polynesia, then I went to Marseille in France to study the repair and maintenance of yachts and motor craft. Once back in Tahiti in 1998, I set up my own repair company, and became captain of a 72 foot sportfishing boat. Over the next seven years the pull towards yachting grew and grew, so in 2006 I decided to set up Tahiti Yacht Services which eventually became part of Seal Superyachts .

We promised exciting A40 news in November, and here it is:

Pascal and Maxime, the French partners who are making the Adventure 40 real, have selected Vincent Lebailly to design the boat.

This decision is the result of months of work, as summed up by Pascal and Maxime:

In France, the yachting industry relies on several dozen highly competent architects. We listed more than 20 architects that could meet our needs. A dozen of them showed interest in the Adventure 40 project. After numerous long telephone conversations and meetings, our shortlist was gradually reduced. We had to make some difficult choices because the motivation and skills of the very last ones were extremely high. In the end, a list of objective criteria gave Vincent Lebailly the edge.

The important takeaway from the above is that these days much, maybe most, of the world’s offshore sailboat design is happening in France, so if a designer can compete with, and rise to the top of, that deep pool of talent he or she must be good at what they do.

The A40 partners go on to say:

To make our choice, we considered that desire and commitment to the project were the first criteria. Indeed, the Adventure 40 is not a boat like any other, it cannot be the result of a simple adaptation of an existing boat. The needs expressed by AAC are extremely precise. Some architects perceived the A40 as a vintage boat, and didn’t see that, while using proven principles, the approach is truly modern. We needed an architect who really understands this need.

Here the takeaway is that some of the architects that the partners interviewed disparaged the Adventure 40 as vintage, but Vincent understood that in fact the boat is futuristic, in that she will bring offshore voyaging to more people in a safe and above all reliable and comfortable way, while still being fast, and at an amazingly low 10-year cost of ownership—about as far from a throwback as it’s possible to be.

I have already seen direct evidence that Vincent totally gets the Adventure 40 ethos in the form of two papers that he and the two partners have prepared, one on the rudder and the other on the rig, that improve both, but without violating the fundamental of ocean-ready reliability that is the core of the Adventure 40 concept.

I will be writing more about these changes in the next article.

But I can say right now that the suggestions made in both papers simplify the boat while making her more functional. Totally in keeping with the quote Maxime and Pascal have placed on the first page of the specification:

Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte, non quand il n’y a plus rien à ajouter, mais quand il n’y a plus rien à retrancher. …perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away… Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

With this announcement, some of us may be concerned that instead of one of the great grey-beards of boat design in North America, like say Bob Perry, we have a young French designer with a bunch of high-performance modern boats to his name.

That kind of thinking, while understandable, is a huge mistake. The fact is that today pretty much everything that is exciting and innovative in offshore sailing is happening in Europe and centred on France, so by selecting a designer who will adhere to the basic concepts of the boat, but add French innovation and flair to the design, we will massively expand the market for the boat.

And this in turn will give us the sales numbers we need to achieve the quality and price goals we have set.

pascal yacht

I also suspect that many may worry that none of Vincent’s designs look like the Adventure 40.

Not to worry, as we have discussed before , for an experienced designer like Vincent who is properly qualified, including a BEng from Southampton (now Solent) University, one of the most respected yacht naval architecture schools in the world, there is nothing technically difficult about designing the Adventure 40 to meet the specification.

And, best of all, Vincent’s track record of designing boats for the major French builders, including Garcia , will give the project credibility— to make this work a boatbuilder must believe in and know they can work with the designer.

It’s also great to see that Vincent is backed by a team, including a qualified engineer. This is a professional outfit that owners and builders have trusted for over 10 years to design millions of Euros worth of boats— we needed credibility, we got credibility.

Coming Next

In the next article I will be dissecting the rudder and rig changes and then we will move on to analyzing and discussing the full specification.

Thank you for the update. Nice to see this project moving along with the efforts of Pascal and Maxime.

Kit Laughlin

Congratulations; this is a major milestone. The very best of best wishes for the project!

Whitall Stokes

Love the pullman berths, chain lockers by the mast from his other designs. I also see transom hung rudders, short sprits to keep moving in light air and not motor. Really liking where this is going!

John Harries

Very perceptive. I can share that there is now a sprit in the latest A40 specification.

Cory Hall

Does that mean cutter too? 🙄

Ernest E Vogelsinger

As John will watch over the spec, and it should be ocean going, I don’t see any way the A40 would be anything else than a cutter 😉

Robert Hellier

This is great news and a BIG step forward.

I like the quote from Saint-Exupéry which sums up the ethos of many aviators like him. Flight, like sailing, is not very forgiving of mechanical failure or human error, so it is absolutely appropriate to be applied to a sailboat design, especially one promoted as an expedition sailboat.

While Saint-Exupery’s statement is concise, Buckminster Fuller’s is more so;

“As complex as necessary. As simple as possible”.

This 8-word mantra is what I repeat to myself whenever I’m engaged in problem solving. It’s brevity helps concentrate the mind. Maybe it’ll help your A40 team as well.

Good luck and fair winds to this exciting project!

Another good quote.

Philippe Candelier

Great. A rare translation where English takes almost more words than in French!

Pierre Jean

Bravo Pascal, Maxime, John and company… The legend says that when a replica of the frigate that brought Lafayette to America, the “Hermione”, was started in France in the late 90’s, original plans were lacking. It turns out the British Admiralty had extensive details, scantlings and plans on this frigate. They had developed them after capturing a sistership to Hermione. These frigates were the fastest in their time and the British were literally “killing” to know the secret of their speed. So, yes, naval architecture in France has a track record in innovation and performance that goes a long way back. The Adventure 40 design is in good hands.

Absolutely. I’m a big reader of books about the Napoleonic Wars and many of those make clear that the ships that were often most desired by captains and crews in the Royal (British) Navy were those prizes that had been designed and built in France. And, as you say, by late in the 1800s the Navy Board was basing a lot of their designs on French ships.

Matt Marsh

OK, I’ve now gone from being excited about how the Adventure 40 would work out, to being *very* excited.

Vincent Lebailly and his team are a perfect choice here. Looking through Vincent’s design portfolio, what I see is an NA who’s backed by a strong and experienced team, and who understands how to design according to the mission requirements.

This isn’t a designer who’s going to let his ego lead the way. This isn’t a designer who draws the same boat over and over, with a few little changes to size and details, regardless of the mission. Every Lebailly boat appears to be the product of an exhaustive analysis of every aspect of the vessel’s purpose and intended use, with the design evolving to suit those requirements. They show creativity, and well-reasoned analysis, and meticulous detailing, in equal measure.

For a couple of years, I toyed around with the idea of doing the A40 design myself. But I’m not the right person for the job. Vincent is. And it’s going to be awesome.

I came to just about the same conclusion, but it’s great to have that confirmed by someone who has formal training and has actually designed boats.

Maxime Gérardin

Thank you Bill, Kit, John, Robert, Philippe, Pierre and Matt for the kind words! To us, encountering Vincent was a great pleasure and joy. We’re very happy to see that you second our choice!

William Elliott

I may have to update my cruising budget!

Frederick Gleason

I have enjoyed following the Adventure 40 and dreaming… Recently I happened onto a shallow draft aluminum french built boat of 40′ called Allures 40.9, which I liked, but I realized how different different they must be, in ways I don’t realize. I am wondering if anyone knows more about these boats and how they would differ.

Hi Frederick,

The Allures is an interesting boat, but my big objection to them has always been the fibreglass deck. To me it makes no sense to build an aluminium boat and then introduce an 100 foot joint between two materials with radically different characteristics. One of the great advantages that aluminium boats have over glass is they are far less prone to deck leaks, so that advantage goes away with the Allures.

I also don’t like twin rudders, particularly for cruising, way too vulnerable and gets you into a bow thruster: https://www.morganscloud.com/2017/11/16/qa-coming-alongside-docking-with-twin-rudders/

So, if I were going to spend that kind of money and wanted an aluminium lifting keel boat I would look at a Boreal, Ovni, or older Garcia. More on two of those options here: https://www.morganscloud.com/category/boat-design-selection/

As to the Adventure 40 compared to the Allures, or the others I mention above, they are completely different types of boats, so hard to compare without a full article, but if you read through the entire A40 online book, and then follow the links above and dig in, you should get a good feel for which boat will suite you best.

Jack Crognale

I realise you have a ways to go but I’m not getting any younger. Care to take a guess on when you will have one for a demo sail? It sounds like a wonderful boat and project.

If I had to guess, I would say 18 months. That said there are a huge number of variables in play that could change that.

Thanks John

Yachts Run Aground After Squall in The Bahamas

Multiple yachts ran aground in the exuma islands of the bahamas after a squall hit, according to capt. pascal gademer and capt. greg warner. .

Capt. Pascal Gademer of M/Y La Balsita shared pictures and video of multiple yachts run aground after a squall hit the Exuma Islands around 11:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. The squall hit most of the Exuma Islands on Thursday night, all the way from Highbourne Cay to Farmer’s Cay. Although winds had been light all evening, the squall switched the winds west, increasing it from under 10 knots to 35 to 38 knots, according to Gademer.

yachts run aground

Anchored at Big Major Cay, La Balsita swung 180 degrees, triggering Gademer to start main engines just in case. A number of boats quickly began dragging, as captured in Galdemer’s HelmCam video that can be seen here . Gademer tracked a 60-foot Sea Ray about a quarter of a mile upwind of La Balista on his AIS, with the vessel eventually ending up on the beach.

Winds from the west continued to increase in speed, eventually reaching close to 40 knots for two hours and resulting in three-foot waves. The wind eventually came down to 10 to 12 knots around 2 a.m., with the chop subsiding around 3:30 a.m.

“Making things worst is the fact that the Bahamas weather radar on the Bahamas Met website has been down for months,” Gademer wrote.

While Gademer reported a large BRIG RIB and two PWCs in addition to the 60-foot Sea Ray ending up on the beach at Big Major Cay, he was alerted that a 40-foot catamaran ended up on the rocks at Highbourne Cay and an 82-foot Azimut ran hard aground at Little Farmer’s Cay. Capt. Greg Wagner was on scene of the grounded Azimut, and submitted pictures of it to Triton . Although an unfortunate experience, Gademer wants all captains and crew to learn the following lessons to avoid situations like these in the future.

– Be aware of possible weather in summer and have the boat ready including securing jet skis, dinghies, and toys. Same with cushions and awnings.

– Use your onboard radar to track incoming weather.

– Have the engines ready to prevent dragging or [to] dodge others.

I have an ice machine for my fish box that has us stumped. It has a pump for sea water that is used for condenser cooling and to make salt water ice if you select that option. The pump is March Mfg Model BC-3C-MD. Every time I start the machine I have to crack open a burp valve on the discharge side of the pump to burp it or it will not discharge. I use to have to do this once at the start of the season but now I have to do it every time I start the machine. It’s a PITA because I have to lift the fish box out to get to it which is a two person ordeal. Everything in this sea water circuit is well below the waterline. The hose from sea strainer to the pump is less than 6’ long and is straight shot into the pump. If I open the burp valve with the pump not running water comes gushing out. So I am 99.9% certain this is not a priming issue with water getting to the pump. Is it possible the clearances and condition of the pump have worn just enough that the pump can’t build pressure unless I open valve and then once it gets going it is able to maintain pressure? That’s the only thing I can think of. The only control circuitry from the ice machine to the pump is to turn the pump on which is working. The pump runs continuously if the machine is on. Any ideas other than replacing the pump? I thought about installing an actuated valve that I could open via switch to be able to burp it without lifting out the fish box but that seems kind of ridiculous to have to do.

I have great faith in that pump. So, next questions; Where is the raw water pickup, How high is the discharge outlet, This happens the next morning or when you splash? In my opinion, If that pump has a solid connection to the sea, it will pump,,, unless the output water is heavier than the first charge of raw water supply. Please tell us about the discharge path from that pump.
Raw water pickup is about 6’ from the pump, near stern of boat. Hose from strainer to pump is a straight shot as mentioned. Everything is well below waterline. This occurs any time I shut the machine off. Even if just for a few minutes I have to burp the discharge line or it will not discharge. Discharge path is maybe 18” of hose from pump to ice machine. It has a tee in center of discharge line that the burp valve is on. That’s pretty much it. Pump discharge goes into an Amot valve then into the machine. The discharge line does make a gradual loop so the burp valve is below pump in bottom of bilge. There does not appear to be any air in the line when I burp it. From the machine it goes to an overboard just above the waterline about 5’ from the machine. I am able to watch this discharge point and can see no water coming out until I burp it. Water discharges from the overboard almost immediately when I burp it. Again, a simple 1-2 second crack open of that burp valve and all is well.

Capt Ralph said: ↑ You shut the ice maker off last, dock side. Then a few minutes later it will not restart? So not bubbles from the exhaust, running gear or anything else? Something is putting air on that impeller or the water against the pump is heavier that the start up flow. The next time you return to the dock, with the ice maker running, all else off, look at your strainer. Any air (one bubble) in there? OR,, air is coming back wards to the pump maybe. I may get a trip out of you yet, albeit living in your bilge watching your pump and strainer, but a trip.. Click to expand...
One air bubble on that impeller can mess you up like this. Question; The discharge from the pump, pointing up and soft bent towards the ice machine?

The march pump heads and impellers are hard plastic that doesn’t suffer from erosion so it is unlikely to be an issue although I have had two fail over the years with a broken impeller piece. It did make quite a bit of noise though. when you say it’s a straight shot from the strainer to the pump, does it means uphill or is there a high spot like if going above a stringer? That’s a common issue although that would cause the problem after a haul out. Not once the system is primed and running not sure why you need a burp valve in the first place, I assume it’s just a valve you open to get air out. I ve never had to have one on any air con or water maker set up which would be no different from your ice machine I used to have a priming issue on a water maker which would loose prime after a run. Couldn’t figure it out everything running uphill, no high point, etc. The problem went away after we installed external scoop strainer. But in your case if it happens at the dock after the unit is shut down, that’s a different issue. As a band aid, can you extend the burp hose to a more accessible location?

I would also look at a restriction somewhere in the system. A few dead shells could be restricting flow and causing priming issues yet allow the pump to run enough water once it’s going? how is the flow at the discharge? Are the coils running hot? have you made sure your diver cleans the thru hull? I be also seen shells stuck between the scoop and the thru hulls causing random issues. When was the system last descaled? You could also try to back flush the system to dislodge crap. as I ve said March pumps don’t suffer form erosion and performance drop with age but you never know …
There certainly could be a restriction somewhere. Doubt that it would be growth or shells but who knows what might have gotten in there. The AMOT valve is dialed down pretty far as it doesn’t take much of this cold water to keep it cool. Too much water and it shuts itself down hence the need for the AMOT. But this is same as it has been since installation. But I would think a restriction would cause flow issues continuously and not just at start up? But certainly can’t hurt to check it and back flush it to make sure. The thru hull is clean. Boat has only been in the water barely a month and we don’t get growth up here like you all do in that warm water. Suggestions and input are greatly appreciated - thank you!
AMOT valve ?? Can you open it up a lil more at a time and see if start up issues reduce or go aweigh? Like dead weight on a discharge line and the pump can not overcome it at start up. Maybe open the valve up some and install a lower flow pump.

I could see an air issue on the suction side but on the discharge side seems nuts to me. Must be the discharge air is actually accumulating in the impellor housing itself. The impellor housing gasket leaking, you'd think you would see a puddle. I always heard you could use shaving creme to find a suction leak. Messy but spray small amount on hose ends, pump impellor seal, etc and the creme will get sucked into the leak when it is running. I never had to try it though so maybe an urban legend ! What kind of head pressure can a March pump overcome ?

I think you guys are onto something with a restriction somewhere. I haven’t used this thing in salt water mode in a couple of years. So I flipped it over to Saltwater ice out of curiosity and the thing discharged and took right off without burping it. Now here’s the thing, the same March pump and AMOT feeds all the saltwater for cooling or making ice. So I don’t think the restriction is the AMOT valve setting as it still discharges thru the AMOT before getting to the machine. I’m going to let it run for an hour or so on saltwater ice mode then flip it back to fresh just to see what it does.
So I ran it on saltwater ice then shut it down. I started it on saltwater a second time and it kicked off just fine, no burping. I switched it back to freshwater and it started normally, no burp needed. So I’m not ready to declare victory by any means. We are headed out in the morning for a 3 day trip. I think I’ll run it on saltwater for this trip and see how it does. Upon return I’ll switch it back to fresh it try it as the manual says to flush it on fresh water mode after using saltwater anyway. I’ll report back upon our return.
