126-year-old B.C.-built sailboat ready to take to the sea once again

Dorothy, built in 1897, is one of the oldest sailing yachts in the pacific northwest.

A sailboat on the water.

Social Sharing

A sailboat that first launched 126 years ago in Victoria, B.C., is set to take to the sea once again.

Dorothy is a 30-foot (7.41-metre) sailboat built between 1896 and 1897 by John J. Robinson in what was then the James Bay boatyard on Vancouver Island, currently marked by the Laurel Point Inn.

The Maritime Museum of B.C. says Dorothy is considered the oldest sailing yacht in the Pacific Northwest. It went through nearly a dozen owners before being donated to the Victoria-based museum in 1995.

After a decade of restoration work, Dorothy will be launched into the ocean from Ladysmith on Saturday, making it the oldest B.C.-built registered sailboat in use, according to Angus Matthews, one of Dorothy's previous owners and board chair of the museum.

  • Video A B.C. group is painstakingly rebuilding a WWII aircraft so it can take to the skies again

"She's absolutely gorgeous," Matthews told CBC  All Points West  host Jason D'Souza, crediting red cedar harvested from B.C., along with oak and mahogany touches, with keeping Dorothy seaworthy for so long.

Matthews explained that Dorothy was one of roughly two dozen sailing yachts built in the 1890s to help launch the European-style sailing scene in British Columbia.

Over the years, it participated in many races, and the museum houses multiple trophies won in regattas held in the first half of the 20th century.

The museum also has logs of its travels around Vancouver Island and B.C.'s south coast, including a sworn testimony from a previous captain that he had witnessed  Cadborosaurus , a sea serpent that was rumoured to have lived in the waters of Victoria's Cadboro Bay.

"It was an amazing career," Matthews said.

Decade-long restoration

The refit of Dorothy was a joint project between the Maritime Museum of B.C. and the Ladysmith Maritime Society.

Volunteer boatwright Robert Lawson used early photos to help him restore the boat back to its original design.

Roughly 80 per cent of the original hull is still in place, with Lawson repairing seams and caulking and stripping layers of paint away before refinishing the exterior.

WATCH | Tony Grove explains the refitting process:

Volunteers took part in restoring the deck and other aspects of the boat, said Maritime Museum of B.C. president Jamie Webb in a statement, adding that "without them, we would not have come to this happy day so soon."

Dorothy will be launched into the Ladysmith Harbour on Saturday at 1 p.m. After that it will stay on display in the Ladysmith Community Marina. It will eventually be moved into Victoria's Inner Harbour once a berth can be found.

Vessels entering Canada from foreign waters must report to the Canadian Border Services Agency ( CBSA ) before stepping foot or dropping anchor on Canadian soil.

Most commonly, boats will clear Customs by using the dedicated phone on the Raymur Point CBSA Boat Dock . This 160’ (49m) dock is located between Fisherman’s Wharf and the Coast Harbourside Hotel marina. As you pass the float homes at the east end of Fisherman’s Wharf (Shoal Point), look for a single long dock with yellow capped pilings, marked “Customs”—that is the Raymur Point CBSA Boat Dock . There is a phone located on the float that will connect you with CBSA. Make sure to reference “Raymur Point CBSA Boat Dock” as your reporting site.

If your vessel is over 160′ or 49m, contact CBSA at 1-888-226-7277 to make alternate arrangements with CBSA since you will not be able to tie up to the dock.

Once you have cleared Customs, please hail Greater Victoria Harbour Authority on VHF 66A for moorage in our marinas.

Washrooms & Laundry

Washrooms, fee-per-use showers, and a self-serve laundromat are available in the Inner Harbour at the Wharf Street marina and at Shoal Point, Fisherman’s Wharf for monthly customers only. Floating public washrooms are open March to October at Fisherman’s Wharf.

Garbage, Recycling & Compost

Garbage and recycling receptacles are located at each GVHA marina facility. Compost collection is available at Wharf Street, Ship Point and Causeway marinas.

The GVHA crane is available for use by appointment for loads up to 2 tons. Please contact the Wharfinger at 250-883-2156 or the Fuel Dock at Fisherman’s Wharf at 250-381-5221 for scheduling and conditions of use.

Eco-Friendly

GVHA’s marinas are certified 4 anchors under the Clean Marine BC program. Clean Marine BC is a voluntary environmental assessment program for marinas, harbour authorities, yacht clubs and boatyards. Our marinas were comprehensively evaluated on best practices for fuel and energy use, drainage, water quality, condition of the grounds, water conservation and waste management methods.Read more about environmental initiatives at GVHA facilities.

Marine Fuel

Both gas and diesel fuel are available from the Fuel Dock at Fisherman’s Wharf marina. The Fuel Dock is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except Christmas Day and New Years Day. Call 250-381-5221 for more information.

Pump Out Services

Our pumpout station is conveniently located on Finger B at Fisherman’s Wharf. Purchases are available by credit card. GVHA also offers a mobile pumpout service for long term liveaboard moorage customers at our marinas.

Victoria Harbour Cruises at Night

A Victoria Harbour Cruise is not just a great way to enjoy the magnificent views offered by the Hong Kong skyline but also a way to experience the rhythm and vitality of the city.

Victoria Harbour is one of the world's busiests, and quite an engrossing sight with the large cargo freighters and passenger cruise liners sharing the waterways with tiny sampans and junks, barges and ferries, all moving along and going on their daily routines... day and night...

As you can expect, the offerings for a Victoria Harbour Cruise are endless. There are all sorts of cruises and vessels to choose from. Cruises leave conveniently from piers on both the Hong Kong and Kowloon sides.

Victoria Harbour Cruise Sightseeing Boat

Victoria Harbour Cruises are so popular that many companies have jumped in the bandwagon to offer all sorts of different experiences including Day Harbour Cruises, Cocktail Harbour Cruises, Dinner and Cruising, etc.

Here are some of the most popular options for Victoria Harbour Cruises to consider:

Hong Kong Harbor Night Cruise and the Symphony of Lights

Victoria Harbour Cruise

There are simply no words to describe the views of stunning Victoria Harbour and the majestic Hong Kong skyline lit up at night, it's just one of those things you just have to see.

This cruise brings you right to the middle of it, offering uninterrupted views of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Peak and the Kowloon skyline while the city's dazzling light show, the Symphony of Lights, unfolds around you.

You will cruise Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour aboard a traditional Chinese sightseeing boat, on your 1.5-hour evening cruise you'll enjoy unlimited free drinks from the open bar.

The highlight of your evening harbor cruise is the 20-minute Symphony of Lights show , a spectacular display of laser beams bouncing off 40 key skyscrapers on both sides of the harbour.

Duration: Approximately 90 minutes

Hong Kong Sunset Cruise plus Dinner at the Jumbo Floating Restaurant

Victoria Harbour Cruise and Jumbo Floating Restaurant at Night

This is certainly one unforgettable experience which combines an evening cruise on Hong Kong's dazzling Harbour, a 7-course feast at one of the cities institutions, Aberdeen's famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant and a glittering night view of Hong Kong and Kowloon from the Mid-levels lookout.

There will be unlimited free drinks from the open bar while onboard your cruise, which will be on a traditional Chinese sightseeing tour boat, close to sunset as you see the striking skyline lit up.

After your evening cruise on Hong Kong's floodlit harbor, you'll travel to Aberdeen by luxury motor coach for a superb Chinese banquet dinner at the famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant , Hong Kong's most renowned floating restaurants. Spectacularly illuminated at night, the Jumbo looks like a floating palace from the imperial era.

On your return to central Hong Kong you'll make a stop at the Mid-Levels lookout for a glittering night view of Hong Kong and Kowloon. Duration: Approximately 4 hours

The Star Ferry Harbour Cruise

Victoria Harbour Cruise - Star Ferry

Besides their regular commuting ferries between the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, the Star Ferry "Shining Star" offers a one hour Cruise that circles Victoria Harbour and leave from Tsim Sha Tsui and Central Ferry Piers.

This is probably the easiest and most economical no-frill Victoria Harbour cruise which gives you the awesome views of the bay and the skyline you are here to see:

  • Departures every hour, starting at 11:55 from Kowloon, 12:15 from Central
  • You can buy a ticket at the pier right before boarding, ticket sales close 10 minutes before departure

Sampans and Hong Kong Junks

Victoria Harbour Cruise - Sampan Ride

Cruising the waters of Victoria Harbour on a traditional sampan or junk is a fun, one-of-a-kind experience.

If you happen to see the red-sail sampans traversing the waters of the bay, it will more than likely be either the Duk Ling or the Aqua Luna , as there aren't that many traditional sampans in operation any more.

So needless to say, getting in on one or the other for a trip around the Harbour, will take a little more advance planning and booking ahead is a good idea.

Best of Hong Kong: Dinner at Victoria Peak, Night Markets and Harbour Cruise

Victoria Harbour Cruise - Sampan Ride

This tour combines some of the best things to do and see in Hong Kong:

  • Victoria Peak with its legendary sweeping views of the Harbour...
  • A visit to the Temple Street Night Market, our favourite night market in the city
  • City lights harbour cruise aboard the Aqua Luna, the beautiful red-sail sampan

Duration: Approximately 5 hours

Hong Kong Harbor Night Cruise and Dinner at Lei Yue Mun Seafood Village

Victoria Harbour Cruise - Sampan Ride

Another popular option, specially if you love seafood, is a Victoria Harbour Night Cruise combined with a visit to the Lei Yue Mun Seafood Village.

Lei Yue Mun is one of the few remaining traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong with a very picturesque harbour. One of the main draws are the seafood restaurants with the tanks of live seafood lined up with tons of offerings for the asking.

Duration: Approximately 3 hours

Welcome to Victoria Harbour Ferry and our fleet of famous “pickle boats” and electric vessels!

See for yourself why Victoria Harbour Ferry is one of the city’s most treasured attractions.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria's waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for almost 30 years. Beat the traffic and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

We enjoyed our tour of the inner harbour and gorge. Ben was very knowledgeable and kind. He was great with my two kids and took the time to be very thorough about the areas we were passing by. Overall it was a great experience.

What a great view of Victoria from the water! I'm new to Victoria so am trying to experience life as a tourist. My Guide Fenn was so pleasant and very knowledgable. I took the Combo Tour of the Gorge and Vic West. It was well worth the 45 minute ride. I would definitely recommend it to visitors.

If you come to Victoria anytime between May and October do yourself a solid and take the Harbour Ferry (yes harbour has a "U" in it when visiting Canada) ...it will take you around one of the world's cleanest and most beloved cities. Get on the water and Putt Putt Toot Toot!

As local residents we definitely recommend the Victoria Harbour Ferry - especially for visitors from the prairies. It gives visitors an interesting water experience while and features a spectacular view of the Victoria Harbour.

My family and I really enjoyed our Inner Harbour Ferry Tour. It was our first experience and I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed it! We learned so much about Victoria and the views were stunning! It is a working harbour so there is so much to experience. A must do!

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria’s waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for over 30 years. Connect to our network of trails, pathways and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

Hong Kong’s world-famous harbour sits in an arena of skyscrapers and verdant hills, offering a spectacular perspective on the city. Its deep waters and location on the South China Sea were key to Hong Kong’s establishment as a British colony in the mid-19th century.

A trip around or across the harbour offers the chance to contrast mainland China with the unique atmosphere and pace of Hong Kong island – for mere pennies.

The cheapest and simplest way in on the iconic Star Ferry – a standard ferry route that connects Hong Kong Island with Kowloon. The Star Ferry has been in operation since 1888, before which time passengers crossed the harbour in oar-powered sampans. The early Star Ferries were steamboats. The Star Ferry Company also operate a harbour tour in the double-decker Shining Star , a re-creation of these ferries that plied the harbour in the 1920s.

A more traditional, cultural option is a tour on a traditional red-sail junk. Or you can go luxury, and book in for one of the luxury dinner cruises, often with a buffet dinner and sometimes a live band on board.

Getting there & doing it

The Star Ferry crosses to Kowloon from either Central No.7 pier, or the Star Ferry pier at Tsim Sha Tsui. You can also catch the ferry from Wanchai pier to Tsim Sha Tsui.

When to do it

The Star Ferry runs all year round, seven days a week, with ferry crossings every 10 minutes.

Hop on just before 8pm if you want to catch the Symphony of Lights show, as the ferry pauses mid-crossing to allow for better photography.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Victoria Harbour

Choosing the perfect vessel to navigate the iconic Victoria Harbour with Yachting.Rent is a voyage in itself—one steeped in personal preferences, anticipated experiences, and the magic of maritime exploration. Whether you’re drawn to the time-honoured elegance of a sailing boat or the versatile comfort of a catamaran, we’re here to help you make the perfect choice for your sailing adventure.

Sailing Boats: Tradition Meets Adventure Sailing boats, with their single-hull design, offer a classic sailing experience that’s both thrilling and intimate. As the hull cuts through the waters of Victoria Harbour, you’ll feel each wave and gust of wind, placing you right in the heart of the action. The result is a visceral connection with the sea—an adventure that’s both personal and profound. For those seeking to master the elements, or simply to feel them more keenly, sailing boats provide an experience that’s as close to traditional sailing as it gets.

Catamarans: Comfort Meets Stability On the other hand, catamarans offer a uniquely balanced blend of comfort, stability, and space. Their twin-hull design makes them exceptionally steady on the water—perfect for those who are new to sailing or prefer a smoother journey. The wider platform provides ample space for relaxation or socializing, making catamarans an ideal choice for larger gatherings or families. If your perfect sailing experience involves laid-back luxury with plenty of room to move, a catamaran could be your vessel of choice.

Navigating Your Preferences The choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran ultimately comes down to what you want from your journey. If you crave an exhilarating, hands-on experience that brings you closer to the natural world, a sailing boat could be your perfect match. If, however, you prioritize space, stability, and comfort—particularly if you’re planning to sail with a larger group—a catamaran could be the ideal choice.

No matter your choice, with Yachting.Rent, you’re guaranteed a memorable maritime journey. Our sailing boats and catamarans are meticulously maintained to ensure both your safety and comfort. With a team of skilled professionals at your disposal, you can relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of Victoria Harbour, confident in the knowledge that you’re in safe hands.

Ultimately, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran isn’t just about choosing a type of vessel—it’s about defining your sailing journey, shaping your experiences, and creating unforgettable memories. So, choose your vessel and let Yachting.Rent guide you through the breathtaking waterscape of Victoria Harbour. Your perfect sailing adventure awaits.

The identities of the people swept up in a horror boat accident in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula that left three people dead have been revealed.

Flinders University professor Danny Eckert, his brother Tom, father Paul, Danny’s 13-year-old son and the boat captain were thrown into the waters off Port Lincoln on Monday about 4pm after an apparent freak wave hit the vessel.

Professor Eckert, 44, and his son survived by clinging to a reef for 10 hours before they were located by a police helicopter about 2am on Tuesday.

Tom, Paul and the boat captain died in the tragedy, with all three found deceased by police on Tuesday.

“Just after 8.30pm on Monday, police were alerted after five people who set off in a fishing vessel from Port Lincoln did not return,” the police said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“Police Water Operations Unit and Port Lincoln police launched a search, utilising resources from the local Sea Rescue.

Professor Eckert has a PhD in sleep and respiratory physiology from Adelaide University.

“My research aims to improve understanding of obstructive sleep apnoea and respiratory disease pathophysiology, identify novel therapeutic targets, and develop new-targeted therapies,” Professor Eckert says on his Flinders University website.

In 2019, he was awarded the Pierre Robin Award from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine for “exceptional initiative and progress in the areas of education and academic research with original contributions to dental sleep medicine”.

Loved ones have remembered a British-born man who died after jumping off a bridge as a “very special person”.
