Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Comissioned by the Seattle Yacht Club in 1928. Originally called the 18’ DEVELOPMENT CLASS FLATTIE, or just FLATTIE. The first builder was the N.J. Blanchard Boat Company. Racing rules allow the use of 1 trapeze. No spinnaker.

Too bad. That's a classic. Maybe you can find an old Lightning or a 110. A snipe isn't far from a Flattie (Geary 18)
Certainly looks like a fast dinghy. GEARY 18 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
Caleb: They were heavy by today's standards but they did sail well and were very popular racing on Lake Washington when I was a kid. Unfortunately it was one of the only boats racing one design in Seattle that I don't think I ever sailed.
Bob, I've never sailed a Geary 18' myself either. The closest I can compare it to is a Lightning 19' which is a fast boat for it's size. The Lightning class weight limit for that 19' boat is 750#'s. According to sailboatdata.com the Geary 18' weighs in at 525#'s. I suppose that both of these older designs are heavier than some more modern design/build. I'm just wondering what newer boats you might compare the Geary 18' (or Lightning for that matter) to? Is there a Perry 20' racing dinghy in the pipe line?
Caleb: Yeah, there is a lot less boat to a Flattie compared to a Lightning which I have sailed. The original Flatties were planked. I think two planks for the topsides, maybe three. There was a guy Felix Moiteret, who was absolutely dominant in Flatties for many years on Lake Washington, About 5 years ago he came to the shack with an idea they could rejuvinate the Geary 18 class and keep it alive. He wanted my advice. A guy I had idolized as a kid, wanted my advice. It broke my hear to tell him that I didn't think there was a way to bring the old Flattie up to today's speed standards.
I ended up finding a boat! Got a lido 14. http://www.sailnet.com/forums/introduce-yourself/103187-my-new-boat-lido-14-a.html#post1082626

The eventual result of Geary's interest in youth sailing came in 1928 when he designed the Flattie (now known as the Geary 18), which was a boat that young people could easily build and then sail and race. Despite his sailing successes, Geary is best remembered for his large, handsome, and elegantly appointed wooden motoryachts.
The Flattie, or Geary 18, has been part of the Laurelhurst Sailing Fleet from the very beginning. This page is devoted to the recollections of Fleet members who built and sailed Flatties. You will also find out a little bit about Flatties. According to Skahill (#138, p.48), the Flattie was "the culmination of Ted Geary's dedication to youth ...

Geary started his professional career designing commercial vessels, including Chickamauga, the first diesel-powered tug in the United States, commercial and fishing vessels, and during World War I, large 330-foot wooden-hulled freighters.

I am looking for build plans for a Geary 18 or Flattie as it was sometimes called. This is an old boat design whose last builder was the Clark Boat Company. I have a book written by Ed Monk that has plans in it but they are not to scale and only show Rib dimensions for station 1,2,4, and Transom.
