Spooky Halloween Seven Layer Taco Dip is an All-Time Favorite at this Nest! This tasty treat is layers of spicy bean dip, fresh guacamole, and flavorful sour cream…topped off with loads of grated cheddar cheese, fresh diced tomatoes, sliced black olive spiders, and chopped green onions.
Add a scary sour cream spider web and black olive spiders, and you have one “boo-tiful” Party Dip!

I made this dip for our family Halloween Party last year! Little did I know at that time, but it’s a favorite of all the ghosts that reside at this Nest! (They have good taste…most of the time!)
The combination of yummy layers, on a crispy corn chip, creates a fantastic tasty bite. (No Dracula Puns intended! Yet! There’s a strong possibility that they will still be used!)

This dip isn’t new. It is all over the internet…however, my “Mummy” (Puns for days my friends!) got the recipe from a good friend back in 1982…when Dracula roamed the earth…long before Vampires were cool.
Back then we called it Tex-Mex Dip. Someone got super-duper fancy and decided they wanted their labors recognized. They wanted all “layers” accounted for. Thus, Seven Layer Dip was voted in and Tex-Mex kicked to the graveyard! (Yes… I know they’re bad puns…but you’re still reading!)
How To Make Seven Layer Spooky Spider Dip
The key to this recipe is to do as much prep as possible. So before you begin prep the following items:
Chop 1/2 cup of green onion. Slice, seed, and coarsely chop 1/2 cup of tomatoes, 1 can pitted ripe olives, drained, and sliced, reserving 6 for spiders (there’s something you don’t usually hear) . 8 ounces of cheddar cheese grated.
In the bottom of a 9-inch deep dish pie plate, spread 1 can plain or spicy jalapeño bean dip. Spread evenly over the bottom of the baking dish.

Next peel, pit, chop and mash 2 large avocados.

Add lemon juice, garlic salt, and pepper.
The trick now is to keep your mitts out of this deliciousness! Move the chips away from the Guacamole! Move…come on…step back away from the goods!

Spread layer of Guacamole (minus what you “taste tested”! I know ya did!) evenly over the bean dip.

Next in a small bowl mix together 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Let me say this slowly…MAYONNAISE! Miracle Whip… is only used to kill off evil spirits.
Add 1 cup sour cream.

Add 1 package of taco seasoning. Mix until well combined.

Spread sour cream mixture over avocado layer.

TIP: To keep Guacamole fresh and from turning brown, be sure that sour cream mixture goes all the way to the edge and completely covers the guacamole layer.
EXTRA TIP: Use saran wrap to cover guacamole in a bowl when making it for other dishes. I place the saran wrap right on top of the guacamole and press all the air bubbles out. Then I cover the bowl with another layer of saran wrap.

Cover with 8 ounces of finely grated Cheddar Cheese or a Cheese blend mix.

Usually at this point we would cover the entire top of the dip with the tomatoes, olives, and chopped green onions. However, since this is a “Halloween” version the toppings will go around the edge of the dip starting with the tomatoes.

Next sprinkle with sliced olives and green chopped onions.
Place a half cup of sour cream in a small lunch sack. Snip the end off the bag and pipe the spider web across the top of the cheddar cheese.
Begin with two “X’s” crisscrossed.

Then go around the outside in a circle to finish the spider web.

Add spiders by cutting one olive in half lengthwise for the body. Cut another olive in half width wise for the head. Create the legs with another olive by slicing thin slices of olive.
Try not to make your spider handicapped like I did by giving one spider only three legs!??? (I promise I wasn’t drunk…however, apparently I can’t count to four! Guess I needed…wait for it…”Count Dracula”! You were warned!)
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve . Serve with round corn chips when ready to serve.

This is the perfect Halloween Party Dip! I love how it finished off my party menu! The Hot Dog Mummies in a Graveyard and the Witches Brew Cupcakes!

There you have it! A fun Family Halloween Dinner Menu! Complete with a fantastic dip!
I may have eaten this dip as a meal… I may have! Can ya blame a girl? Spooky Halloween Seven Layer Taco Dip is a fun appetizer that replicates mini Tostadas with every bite.

Spooky 7 layer dip: Halloween Food Decoration Ideas
Posted on Last updated: September 8, 2021
This deconstructed Spooky 7 layer dip is perfect for a halloween themed appetizer! No artistry required, it’s simple to make it spooky, creepy and as festive as you would like for your halloween Party Food!

Today’s recipe is a S pooky 7 layer dip! Completely customizable and honestly the lowest effort for a party you will every have. Well, that’s not totally true but next to just opening a jar of salsa and throwing a bag of chips next to it this recipe is super easy to make!
With the fall season coming it becomes party season in our house. We’re not totally into dressing up in costumes as an adult but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to have some low effort halloween themed party ideas happening!
Tips to a successful Halloween Themed Cocktail Party:
Make it simple..
You can have a super successful party with easy, delicious recipes. While 10-12 different halloween dishes may be impressive you will be way to exhausted to enjoy the party yourself and thats no fun!
While I love a great cocktail or two, serve one signature cocktail and offer beer and wine which will require no additional work on your part.
Great Food and Drinks make for a GREAT Halloween Party.
Starting with food that is amazing and just adding a twist to it will get you more bang for your buck. Serving a Spooky 7 layer dip with a spider web on it and a simple but tasty onion dip that has a few olive shaped bats give you the spirit of halloween without a lot of work!
Everyone will think you did a lot for being festive and all you have to do is make great halloween food decorations.

Make some things ahead of time so you can just put them out.
Prep things ahead of time so when your guests arrive you don’t have to be in the kitchen the whole time. I have a mummy cheese bread I’ll be sharing tomorrow that you can have already to pop into the oven when your guests arrive.
Todays recipe for 7 layer dip can be already to be baked if you want it warm or already decorated if you are serving it cold.
Pick a cocktail that you can make in batches.
This Pumpkin Apple Punch recipe can be made ahead of time then just iced and served when someone needs a cocktail! (make it self serve if you want too!) Even my recipe for the Purple People Eater can be made ahead in a 12 serving batch and have it shaken with ice once you’re ready to serve! (Change the name to Purple People eater and you have a Halloween themed cocktail recipe! )
Do a couple of Halloween Appetizers and mix them with regular appetizers.
Have 2-3 festive foods and mix them in with your other appetizers. You’ll still get the whole festive halloween party vibe but not have a ton of things to do!

More Ideas for Festive Halloween Appetizers:
Im showing 4 ideas you can incorporate in photos for you but don’t worry if you think you aren’t creative enough. You can do super simple things too.
- Olives cut to bats (pictured)
- Ghost outline with two small black olives as eyes
- A Spider web with a creepy spider made out of olives (or buy a toy spider for even easier decorations) (pictured)
- A cheesy Pumpkin shape (pictured)
- Pipe a Skull (Pictured)
- A witches hat is easily made from cheese or guacamole
- A cemetery headstone is easily piped from sour cream

How to make Fun Halloween Food Ideas:
How to make a pumpkin:.
- Place Bean dip in your serving bowl.
- Mix sour cream in a bowl and add a little water to thin it out.
- Add to a piping bag or a zip lock bag you can use as a bag by just cutting a 1/4″ triangle from the corner to pipe the outline of a jack-o-lantern pumpkin.
- Use shredded cheese to fill the center
- Use guacamole to make the stem
- Olives cut into triangles for the eyes and nose
- Cut a strip of tomatoes to resemble teeth.
- You can sprinkle added toppings along the side of the dip for your guests to scoop up.
- Another option is to serve all the other toppings in side bowls.
- If you want to serve this warmed, pipe the sour cream border and place the cheese on. Bake until dip is warmed and melted then add decorative face after baking.

How to make bats as halloween food decorations:
- Cut an olive in half
- Then take one of the halves and cut those in half
- I used the pimento from green olives and cut them to small squares for eyes, but a tomato cut would work too.
- Arrange the half in the middle with the quarter olive on each side like wings on the each side.
- Place the eyes onto the bat.
- Place on your dip (pictured here on bean dip, you could also do this on a sour cream and onion dip or a top this party favorite Crack Dip !

Making a Skull for Halloween Themed food Appetizer toppings:
- Place the base of what you will be decorating into its serving bowl (pictured here as bean dip)
- Add to a piping bag or a zip lock bag you can use as a bag by just cutting a 1/4″ triangle from the corner to pipe the outline of a skull.
- Cut an olive into 1/4″ slices and use two of them for the eyes
- Use a tomato for the nose (I did a shape of triangle)
- Using cheese make a line for the teeth/mouth
- Put added toppings, tomatoes, guacamole/avocado salsa, sour cream, olives and cheese around the dip for scooping

Making a Spider Web for Creepy Halloween Snacks
- Place the bean dip in its ultimate serving dish.
- Add it to a piping bag or a zip lock bag you can use as a bag by just cutting a 1/4″ triangle from the corner to pipe the spider web. Start at the center and pipe one continuous circle going all the way to 1/4 inch from the edge of your bean dip. Alternatively, if you are comfortable piping, pipe a dot in the center then pipe one circle around that dot. Then another circle around that circle until you have circles all the way to the edge of the dip.
- Using a toothpick, drag from the center of the dip to the edge of the dip to create the web. Repeat at equal intervals.
- Decorate with store-bought spider or spider cut from olives as pictured.
- Place additional toppings and chips all around for serving.

More Halloween Food Ideas:
- The Scream Brownies (easy box mix option with simple decorations!)

Spooky 7 Layer Dip: Halloween Party Food

This deconstructed Spooky 7 layer dip is perfect for a Halloween themed appetizer! No artistry required, it's simple to make it spooky, creepy and as festive as you would like for your Halloween Party Food!
Ingredients
- 2 cans pinto beans, 14.5 oz cans
- 1 can rotel tomatoes and green chilis
- salt to taste
- 1 large tomato
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 cup guacamole or avocado
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded, (use a couple of different colors for more variety)
- 1/2 cup black olives, sliced or cut to shapes in post
- 1/2 cup green olives, sliced or cut to shapes in post
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 cup salsa
Instructions
- Strain beans, reserving the liquids for possible use later.
- Place beans, cumin and the entire can of rotel tomatoes and green chilis (with the liquid of the tomatoes and chilis0 into a food processor. Blend until smooth, about 3 minutes.
- If the bean dip seems too thick add a the reserved liquids from the beans a tablespoon at time until the desired thickness. I usually thin it to pancake batter constancy.
- Taste the beans. Add salt as desired.
- Dice the tomatoes to 1/4 " cubes.
- Shred cheese. NOTE.. preshredded cheese has non binders added for anti clumping and it will not melt well. Take the time to shred your own, its worth it!
- Slice olives to 1/4" slices. If you are using black and green olives cut one color olives to slices, and the other to a 1/4" dice for a varied presentation.
- If using avocado you can mash it or dice it. Alternatively you can use guacamole as it is made.
- Place the beans into a serving bowl. If you want warmed dip, place it into a serving bowl you can bake in. Top with cheese. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes until warmed through and cheese is melted.
- Serve the toppings along the outer edges of the dip if you are putting the cheese into shapes or have decorative outlines on top. (see skull pic). If you are serving this as a normal dip... sprinkle all of the toppings evenly over the entire top of the dip and serve immediately.
- Serve with tortilla chips.
This recipe is for the 7 layer dip alone. Please see all the information in the post about decorating for a halloween themed party@

Allrecipes Community Tips and Praise
“This is probably my favorite nacho/taco dip I've ever made,” raves Mochi PJAMas . “It was really easy and made a HUGE amount, perfect for a big family snack or a party. The addition of the taco seasoning to the refried beans gave a tasty kick.”
“This was really good,” says Lisa Brown . “I don't have a large serving platter, so I used 13x9-inch baking dish. I was concerned there wouldn't be enough beans to cover the bottom, so I added a little bit of salsa and it worked out perfectly.”
“I always get rave reviews for this one,” according to MaLizGa . “It's so easy to assemble and such a crowd pleaser!”

Ghoulishly good dip recipe sets the mood for Halloween party
October is here, and the essence of Halloween seems to seep into everything from costumes to spooky festivities to dinner plates. Among the myriad of themed dishes, Spooky 8-layer Taco Dip stands out, seamlessly blending the comfort of a classic taco dip with Halloween’s ghoulish charm.
The dip is made with eight layers of deliciousness: refried beans, sour cream mixed with taco seasoning, salsa, guacamole, cheese, tomatoes, black olives, and green onions. You can assemble the dip in any order you like, but I recommend starting with the refried beans at the bottom and working your way up.
To make the dip extra spooky, I like to make a spiderweb out of sour cream on top of the dip and add a plastic black spider in the center. In addition to the spider web design, you can decorate the taco dip for Halloween with other spooky and festive items. For example, you could add some mini pumpkins, candy corn, or gummy worms. You could also use food coloring to create different designs, such as ghosts, bats, or skulls.
Because of the spider web design, it's best to use a round dish for this recipe. I like to use a white dish to show off the designs better. However, any 9 to 10-inch round dish will work.
Why you should make this Spooky Taco Dip
Visually Striking: This dish isn’t just a dip – it’s a conversation starter. With its layered textures and colorful appearance, it naturally attracts attention.
Easy to Serve: No need for complex plating here. Just place the dish in the center of your snack table with a big bowl of tortilla chips or veggie sticks, and you’re good to go. It’s a self-serving dish that requires minimal maintenance once it’s out.
Crowd-Pleaser: Spooky 8-Layer Taco dip, with its universally loved ingredients like guacamole, salsa, and cheese, is bound to be a hit among young and old alike.
Incorporates Fun and Creativity: Crafting the dip can be fun for the family. Kids can help with layering or decorating, making the preparation process as enjoyable as the eating.
Saves Time: As an all-in-one dish, Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip reduces the need for multiple appetizers. Plus, it's easy to make and can be prepared in advance.
Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip is the epitome of Halloween culinary creations, marrying taste and visual appeal. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a kitchen novice, this dish guarantees a delightful experience for both the maker and the muncher.
So this Halloween, let your creativity run wild and dive into the eerie and tantalizing world of Spooky Taco Dip.

As a lover of all things taco, this seven-layer taco dip has to be one of my favorites.
Second only to a good cheesecake dip , this dish is so versatile, and the variety of layers give a new taste to each bite.

This recipe is great for vegetarians, using beans and salsa. But you can just as easily make it for meat lovers using ground seasoned beef, or even shredded chicken.
When served with spicy or cheesy chips, your guests won’t be able to get enough of this quick taco-like creation.
When setting the table for a party, you’ll want food that is as equally delicious as it is easy to eat. And what’s easier than chips and dip?
Sure, you can put out a store-bought ranch dip with a selection of veggies, or salsa with tortilla chips.
But if you want to level-up your dip game, this recipe is absolutely for you.
Tacos are universally loved, and the flavors in this dip will make you feel like you’re biting into a crunchy taco.
The layers used to make this dip are everything you might see in a good taco.
Taco seasoned beans, light sour cream, cream cheese, salsa, tomatoes, pepper, and crunchy green onions make up the layers in this dish.
Top it all off with shredded lettuce, olives, and more cheese, and you have seven layers that come together perfectly.
Ingredients
There are a few different ways to make this seven-layer taco dip. You might find some for vegans that use beans and vegan cheese spread.
Or there are options packed with seasoned ground beef or even pulled pork.
For this recipe, you will need:
- Taco seasoning – You can use any kind of seasoning you prefer, choosing something more or less spicy depending on what you and your guests like best.
- Refried beans – Using canned beans will cut down on your prep time, but making your own really couldn’t be easier!
- Cream cheese – Adding cream cheese into the mix will give the sour cream a lighter flavor and more substance.
- Sour cream – If you’re not going to add too much spice, you can cut back a little, but the flavor always works in tacos.
- Salsa – I like to use a spicy or even fruity salsa, but you can use your favorite here.
- Tomatoes – Fresh chopped tomatoes make a great layer and give the dip an almost nacho-like feel.
- Bell pepper – These are as much for color as for flavor.
- Green onions – Some people find raw onion overpowering, but the mellow flavor from green onions is just the right amount.
- Iceberg lettuce – Shredded lettuce will give you that authentic taco finish.
- Black olives – Sliced black olives really make the dip pop when sprinkled over the top.
- Cheddar cheese – You can use any cheese here really, but I think cheddar adds great color and just the right amount of flavor.

Tips for the Best Dip
- Use canned ingredients for ease. All you’ll need to do is chop up the veggies and mix the other layers together.
- Use softened cream cheese. It’ll be so much easier to incorporate with the sour cream.
- Used dried pinto beans. They’re cheaper and creamier.
- Soak dried pinto beans overnight. That way, they’re soft and ready to use the next day.
- Prepare the dish a day in advance. It tastes better the next day!
- Add guacamole right before serving. If you’re going to add a layer of guac, prep it and add it to the dip right before serving so that it won’t go brown.
- Serve taco dip in a glass dish. That way, everyone will see all those layers and really try to dig to the bottom.
- Serve with your favorite chips! A big bowl of nacho cheese Doritos, or spicy Doritos, makes the perfect crunchy partner.
- Switch it up with chicken taco dip . The shredded chicken, bean, corn, and cheese layers will blow your mind.

Is This Dip Served Hot or Cold?
This classic version of a seven-layer taco dip is served cold. Even if you incorporate a meat layer, it will still be served cold.
Though, there are a few amazing hot dip recipes that are totally worth a try for your next party.
But for a dip that you can make ahead and bring somewhere, this has to be the best!
If you think you’ll be missing out on that warmth, try serving with hot nachos!
Can I Make Seven-Layer Taco Dip Ahead?
You can absolutely make this dip ahead.
Even just making all components ahead is super easy. You can mix together the beans and seasoning, the cream cheese and sour cream, and have everything chopped and ready to go the night before.
As mentioned above, since this recipe does not incorporate any guacamole, you can easily make it the whole dish up and cover it until you’re ready.
It should hold in the fridge for two to three days, but since it’s so quick to make, I wouldn’t make it too far ahead. You’ll want to avoid the sour cream and veggies from becoming wet and loose.

Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip is the perfect appetizer and party food for all of your Halloween festivities. This no-bake dip is a winner every time and is the first dip devoured at any party. It only takes 5 minutes to put together, but your guests will think that you spent all day in the kitchen!

- Steps – Making the Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip:
The Spooky Part for the 8-Layer Spooky Taco Dip
Frequently asked questions, other delicious halloween treats, why you’ll love this recipe.
- It’s a festive and fun appetizer that is perfect for Halloween parties.
- It’s easy to make and can be assembled in advance.
- It’s a crowd-pleaser that everyone will love.
- It’s a unique and memorable dish that your guests will talk about for days.
Ingredients – Here’s What You’ll Need
I used the following ingredients for this amazing dip: Fat-free refried beans, sour cream, taco seasoning , salsa , guacamole, shredded Cheddar cheese, tomatoes, sliced black olives, and green onions.

Steps – Making the Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip:
The Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip is basically just a layered dip.
- Before assembling the dip, however, I combined part of the sour cream with some taco seasoning and set it aside. Then, I started layering the ingredients in a 9-inch quiche dish. You could use whatever dish you wanted, but the 9-inch quiche dish was perfect for me.
- First, I spread the contents of a can of fat-free refried beans on the bottom of the quiche dish.
- Then, I spread the sour cream/taco seasoning mixture on top of the refried beans.
- Next, I spread the salsa, which I had drained over the sour cream mixture.
- Finally, I spread the guacamole over the salsa.
I spread all the ingredients except for the guacamole to the edges of the quiche dish. I left about a 1 ½-inch border from the sides for the guacamole. The reason was that I would layer the other ingredients along the sides, exposing the guacamole.

- Moving on, I sprinkled shredded Cheddar cheese around the outer part of the dip.
- Then, I sprinkled diced tomatoes on top of the shredded cheese, followed by sliced black olives and sliced green onions.

Ordinarily, I would have spread the cheese, tomatoes, black olives, and green onions on top of the guacamole. However, in honor of Halloween, I decided to expose most of the guacamole so I could create a spider web with sour cream. I used a #4 round tip and a piping bag filled with a small amount of sour cream to do this.
- I started by placing a dollop of sour cream in the center of the guacamole. Then, I made several circles around the center.

- I didn’t worry too much about my piping skills because I then took a toothpick and dragged it from the center to beyond the outer ring to form the spider web.

- I finished the Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip by placing a plastic black spider in the center of the spider web!

I served the Spooky 8-Layer Taco Dip with crispy tortilla chips on the side. Every bite was totally awesome.
The combination of refried beans, sour cream with taco seasoning, salsa, guacamole, cheese, tomatoes, olives, and green onions was to die for.
This amazing Halloween dip took minutes to make for an unforgettable treat. So, if you’re looking for a delicious, festive, and easy-to-make appetizer for your next Halloween party, look no further than this Spooky 8-layer Taco Dip with spider web and black spider! Yum!

Because of the spider web design, it’s best to use a round dish for this recipe. I like to use a white dish to show off the designs better. However, any 9 to 10-inch round dish will work.
You can use any type of plastic spider that you like. I actually used a black spider ring that I purchased from WalMart. Just make sure that it’s small enough to fit in the center of the dip. You may also want to choose a black spider or a different dark color to stand out against the dip.
Yes, you can make the taco dip without the Halloween theme. Simply omit the spider web design and plastic spider. Even without the Halloween touches, the dip will still be delicious and festive.
In addition to the spider web design, you can also decorate the taco dip for Halloween with other spooky and festive items. For example, you could add some mini pumpkins, candy corn, or gummy worms. You could also use food coloring to create different designs, such as ghosts, bats, or skulls.
With Halloween approaching, you might be looking for other Halloween-themed recipes. I have you covered!

- 14.5 ounce can fat-free refried beans
- 1 cup chunky salsa, drained (See Tip 1)
- 1 cup guacamole
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup chopped tomatoes, cored and seeded
- ¼ cup sliced black olives, drained
- ¼ cup sliced green onions, tops only
- Tortilla Chips
Instructions
- Combine 1 cup sour cream and taco seasoning in a small bowl. Set aside
- Spread refried beans in the bottom of a 9-inch dish.
- Spread sour cream/taco seasoning mixture on top of refried beans.
- Spread drained salsa on top of sour cream/taco seasoning mixture.
- Top with guacamole, leaving a 1-½ to 2-inch border around the dish,
- Sprinkle shredded cheese around the outer edge of the dish.
- Sprinkle tomatoes, olives, and green onions on top of shredded cheese.
- Place the remaining sour cream in a pastry bag fitted with a #4 round tip (See Tip 2).
- Place a dollop of sour cream in the center of the guacamole. Pipe several circles around the center dollop.
- Using a toothpick, make a spider web, starting in the center dollop and dragging it beyond the outer circle of sour cream.
- Place plastic spider in the center of a spider web.
- Cover and refrigerate.
- Serve with tortilla chips.
- Yield: 12 servings.
- The reason for draining the salsa is that otherwise, it could make the dip watery.
- May place sour cream in a ziploc bag, and snip off the corner rather than using the piping bag and tip.

Halloween Taco Dip #HalloweenTreatsWeek

Sharing is caring!
Halloween Taco Dip, or the 7-layer dip recipe as most people call it, is the perfect spooky dip for family and friends. Layer all your favorite taco ingredients in one dish and serve at any of the Halloween parties you are attending or hosting this year.
Nothing makes me happier than making fun Halloween treats for my family during spooky season. This great dip was inspired by the popular 7-layer taco dip.

However, I left a few layers out because I'm not too fond of refried beans (like the kind they use for bean dip) and I cannot stand warm lettuce. But, if you like the bean mixture and the lettuce, feel free to add them to this Spider Web Taco Dip.
How to Make Halloween Taco Dip
This fun and festive dip is topped with a sour cream spider web for the holiday. However, if you want to serve this any other time of the year, just leave the spider web off the top.
This dip has always been popular with everyone. They all love the layers and the best part is that it only takes 15 minutes to whip this dish up! I like to serve mine in a 9″ deep dish pie plate, but you can use whatever dish you have on hand.

Check Out the Layers
Layer 1: The first layer of this dish is simply a cream cheese mixture of cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning mix.
Layer 2: This layer is the ground beef taco meat. You can also use ground chicken or ground turkey if you want. Just place some ground beef in a skillet and cook over medium-high heat. Drain the beef, and then add the taco seasoning to it.
Layer 3: the third layer will be the shredded cheese. I like the Taco Fiesta blend, but any of your favorite cheeses will work here.

Layer 4: The fourth layer will be salsa. I like making my own (in fact my most popular recipe on the site is my Pioneer Woman Restaurant Style Salsa ). You can also add some diced green chiles in to create a chunky salsa also.
Layer 5: The layer of guacamole is my favorite! You can buy store-bought guacamole or make my Easy Homemade guacamole recipe . Add a squeeze of lime juice to keep it a bright festive green.
Layer 6: The spider web sour cream layer can be as spooky as you want it. No need to be a decorator to do this layer. If I can do it, so can you! If it’s not Halloween, just spread the sour cream over top of the guacamole and serve.

Making the spooky spider web is easy. Put about 1 cup of sour cream in a ziploc bag or a piping bag. Snip off the corner and draw a straight line around in a circle. Then connect the lines to create a web pattern.
Serve This Dip at Your Next Halloween Party
Once you have the taco dip layered, add your favorite taco toppings around the edge. I added black olives, cilantro, cheddar cheese, and green onions. To finish it off, we sprinkled just a little more taco seasoning on top. Grab a bag of tortilla chips and serve! My favorite chip are tortilla chips with a hint of lime. They are SO good!
Cover the dip with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge until you are ready to serve.

Top the dip with fake spiders or place them around the edge. If you are crafty, take a whole black olive and turn that into a black olive spider for the middle of your dip. The best part is just having fun with this dip! Of course, you can always use a plastic spider ring and place it in the center of the web. Your partygoers will LOVE it.

I’m not a huge Halloween fan.
I don’t enjoy scary movies, creepy costumes, or being in a cemetery at night. But I do love food, so any excuse to get together and eat is alright with me!
Seven layer dips have been around forever.
This deconstructed taco dip is perfect for all you Halloween ghouls and ghosts. Why not try it for a fun after school snack or Sunday appetizer while watching your favorite sports game?

What’s in a Seven Layer Dip?
7 layer dips can vary in ingredients, but I think of it having all the goodies a delicious taco would have in it. This one of mine has refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, taco seasoning, tomatoes, green onions, olives, and shredded cheese.
How Long Does 7 Layer Dip Last In Fridge?
Seven layer dip lasts about 3 to 4 days in the fridge. The longer it is stored, the more the layers will bleed together and it can get a bit watery. You can just drain it off, but in my experience, this dip won’t last that long. After the first 24 hours, it may not look pretty, but I can assure you it will still taste great!

Ingredients
- 1 can 16 oz refried beans
- 2 avocados peeled, pitted, and diced
- 1 ½ tablespoons fresh lime juice
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro chopped
- ¼ cup salsa
- 1 tsp garlic
- 1/2 tsp salt to taste
- 1 8 ounce container sour cream plus a little extra for web design
- 1 1 ounce package taco seasoning mix
- 1 bunch green onions finely chopped
- 2 cups shredded Mexican-style cheese blend
- 1 2.25 ounce can sliced black olives drained
Instructions

- In a 9x13 inch dish or on a large serving platter, spread the refried beans. Top with sour cream mixture.
- Spread on guacamole. Top with cheese.
- Around the outer edges of the pan, add on top the tomatoes, green onions, and black olives.
- Using a squeeze bottle filled with sour cream, draw a plus sign on the middle of the dip. Next, draw two more lines across the plus sign diving each section into 8. Using an arch inbetween each lines, connect each line to the one next to it. Add plastic spiders and you've got yourself a spider's web.

7 Layer Taco Dip
This crowd-pleasing 7 Layer Taco Dip can be prepared in just 5 minutes. It also tends to be the first thing to be eaten when I host parties. This cold dip is the perfect appetizer to serve on game day.

My 7 Layer Taco Dip recipe brings together 9 simple ingredients to create 7 delicious layers of taco goodness: refried black beans, a taco seasoning mix and sour cream mixture, salsa, avocado, chopped lettuce, Mexican cheese, and chopped tomatoes.
The only steps to prepare the dip are mixing sour cream with taco seasoning, mashing avocado with some lime juice, chopping, and assembly.
The hardest part of making 7 layer taco dip is not eating it all yourself.

I made a little video showing how to make 7 layer taco dip – but heads up – I am making a half batch in this video. I had to make a half batch simply because I know myself… and I probably shouldn’t be eating an entire tray of taco dip.
I ate so much of this that I called it dinner, and I am ok with that life choice.

One of the reasons why I love this 7-layer taco dip so much is that this recipe is so easy to customize. There are many variations of this recipe. Many people like to add a layer of black olives. I am not a fan, so I leave them off. I add a layer of mashed avocado, but you could add fresh guacamole instead. You could use fresh pico de gallo or taco sauce instead of the salsa. Plain Greek yogurt, light sour cream, or cream cheese can be used instead of full-fat sour cream – and it can be seasoned if your own homemade taco seasoning or chili powder instead of a taco seasoning mix.
There are no rules here. You can add all of your favorite taco toppings to this dip. It can even have more than 7 layers!
If you don’t want to stop at 7 layers, you could certainly opt to add ingredients like ground beef taco meat, green onions, green chiles, corn salsa, or jalapenos.

One of my favorite things about this layer dip recipe is that it can be made a few hours in advance. Since mashed avocado is one of the ingredients, you don’t want to make it too far in advance or you will risk the avocado turning brown. Just make sure that the avocado is completely covered by the other layers so that no air can get to it, and it should stay nice and green.

Every last bit of this taco dip was eaten, and I think that it will be making an appearance at my parties going forward.

Corn Queso is cheesy and delicious and the corn adds an extra burst of flavor and texture.

Sweet Peppers Stuffed with a Cheesy Spinach Dip are a personal favorite.

Homemade Roasted Garlic and Lemon Hummus tastes far better than anything you could buy in a store.

How to make 7 Layer Taco Dip:
Ingredients
- 1 can of Refried Beans
- 2 cups Sour Cream
- 1 Taco Seasoning Packet
- 1 jar of Salsa (16 ounces)
- 3 Ripe Avocados
- 2 cups Shredded Lettuce (they sell it already shredded!)
- 2 cups Shredded Cheese (I recommend a Mexican cheese mix or sharp cheddar cheese)
- 3-4 Tomatoes (I used Roma tomatoes)
- *I used a 9×13 dish
- Serve with Tortilla Chips
Instructions
- For the first layer, spread the refried beans out evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch (or similarly sized) dish.
- To prepare the next layer, mix the taco seasoning and the sour cream in a small bowl. Spread the seasoned sour cream over the refried beans.
- Spread the salsa layer over the sour cream.
- Half, pit, and scoop the avocados into a bowl. Squeeze the lime over and then mash the avocado, mixing in the lime juice. Then layer the mashed avocado on top of the salsa.
- Continue layering the lettuce, Mexican cheese, and, finally, the tomatoes.
- Seal in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least an hour before serving. Serve with tortilla chips.

I always add thinly sliced green onions to the top of my dip. I drain the taco sauce to get rid of the "wet" problem. By the way, we love the black olives.

In reference to the black olive dilemma, you don't see refried beans on tacos either, burritos maybe, but yet your recipe has beans. As a dip recipe, I would add both beans and olives, but that's just me.

I totally think that people should make their recipes the way they want to. Yeah refried beans on tacos are a little weird, but I love it! And if you love olives, please add them :)

I will definitely be trying this! I have a simple recipe I've used for years, but sometimes it's fun to try something a little different!

Had to laugh at the olive remark. Must be a California-Mex thing. I grew up in CA in the 50's and 60's and we always had sliced olives on our tacos. Also, our taco shells were always tortillas fried with a little oil to make them soft and crispy, not the hard shells like Taco Bell makes and now all the restaurants have copied.
Those shells sound delicious!

7 Layer Spicy Taco Dip
- Gluten-Free
Healthier 7 Layer Spicy Taco Dip made with Greek yogurt, hummus, fresh guacamole, chunky salsa, homemade taco seasoning and all the fun toppings! Super easy to make and always a crowdpleaser!

Eating healthy definitely doesn’t have to be boring and this lightened-up 7 layer spicy taco dip brings all the flavor! Spicy hummus takes the place of refried beans typically used in 7 layer dip recipes and we are swapping out the sour cream with protein-packed Greek yogurt mixed with taco seasoning to really bring all these flavors together! The other layers include fresh guacamole , chunky salsa, and shredded Mexican cheese along with all the fun toppings!
Why You’ll Love this Recipe
- Packed with flavor and so easy to make.
- Made with healthier ingredients you can feel good about eating!
- Great party appetizer, game day snack or a fun side dish on taco night.
- Easily customizable to your liking.
- No cooking or baking required!

Ingredients You’ll Need
- hummus – this takes the place of refried black beans in typical 7 layer dip recipes and I used a spicy flavored hummus which gave this dip a nice kick! Any type of hummus will work though in this recipe.
- guacamole – creamy avocado in my homemade guacamole helps make this dip so creamy and the zesty lime juice adds a pop of flavor!
- salsa – any chunky salsa will work great! Feel free to make your own (I love this recipe ), you could use pico de gallo in place of the salsa, or you can use your favorite jar from the store! A corn and black bean salsa would taste amazing in this, just saying 😉
- Greek yogurt – this takes the place of sour cream in this dip and you’ll need 1 1/2 cups of plain Greek yogurt. You could also mix in some cream cheese to make the yogurt layer thicker or use dairy-free yogurt, if needed.
- taco seasoning – I like to use my homemade taco seasoning , but store-bought seasoning is fine too.
- cheese – I prefer to use shredded Mexican cheese in this dip, but you could use shredded cheddar cheese, colby jack or mozzarella cheese.
- toppings – I used a combination of chopped roma tomatoes, sliced olives and green onions, but you could also add some chopped bell pepper, sliced jalapenos for some spice, shredded lettuce or herbs like cilantro.
How to Make 7 Layer Taco Dip
- Mix in the seasoning. In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt and 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning until completely combined. This will be one of the layers of our dip!
- Add the layers. In the bottom of an 8×8 or 7×11-inch baking dish (or you could make this fancy inside a trifle bowl!), spread an even layer of hummus first followed by a layer of guacamole, spreading evenly. Follow that with a layer of salsa, then the taco seasoned Greek yogurt.
- Add toppings. Sprinkle on the shredded cheese followed by diced tomatoes, black olives and green onions. Cover and chill the dip in the fridge until ready to serve!
How to Serve 7 Layer Taco Dip
- Perfect for football season and tailgates served with tortilla chips and fresh cut veggies.
- Serve as an appetizer on taco night.
- Use as a flavorful topping on tacos , enchiladas or fajitas .
- Add in a layer of seasoned ground beef, ground chicken or ground turkey for a more filling dip.
Prepping and Storing
This 7 layer taco dip will last about 3 days in the refrigerator in a sealed, airtight container. Unfortunately the avocado in the guacamole starts to brown after a few days and the dish becomes watery due to the layer of salsa so I highly recommend enjoying this dip as fresh as possible!

This sounds so good and much healthier than the typical taco dip you see at parties. Will definitely be adding this to my arsenal, especially because I love Sabra so much!
This looks amazing! I can’t wait to try it!

Why You’ll Love This Taco Dip Recipe
Ingredients & substitutions, how to make taco dip, taco dip variations, storage instructions, what to serve with taco dip recipes, more easy dip recipes, recommended tools, taco dip recipe (7 layers, so easy).
If you love tacos, you’ll love everything about this easy taco dip recipe ! My 7 layer taco dip with meat has SO many layers of goodness just begging to be scooped up. We’ve got taco meat. We’ve got a creamy taco sour cream and cream cheese layer. And then we’ve got ALL the toppings. The hardest part? Deciding what to dip into it!
Just like my 7 layer salad , this dip may look like a showstopper, but it’s surprisingly easy to whip up. My family swears it’s the best taco dip recipe. I often make it for parties, as you can easily make it ahead of time (just like cold crab dip or creamy French onion dip ). It never fails to impress! It has meaty layers like my taco casserole , but gets dished up cold as an easy and healthy appetizer .
- Packed with Mexican flavors
- Fresh, light, and flavorful toppings
- Easy to make ahead
- Ready in less than 30 minutes
- Naturally healthy, low carb, and gluten-free
- Perfect for parties or game day !

This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for taco dip, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below .
Meat Layer:
The base layer for taco dip is simply taco meat, the same kind I use for taco salad :
- Ground Meat – I used ground beef, but you could also use pressure cooker shredded chicken , ground pork, ground turkey, or Mexican chorizo for this recipe.
- Taco Seasoning – I like to make my own homemade taco seasoning . It takes just 5 minutes and is made with simple pantry staples: chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne. But a store-bought packet of taco seasoning works as well.
Cream Cheese Layer:
I make this taco dip with cream cheese, sour cream, and a dash of taco seasoning for spice:
- Plain Cream Cheese – Be sure your cream cheese is soft, at room temperature. Otherwise, it won’t mix smoothly with the sour cream.
- Sour Cream – Instead of sour cream, you can also use mayo (with a small splash of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for tang), or plain Greek yogurt.
- Taco Seasoning
You can customize the toppings to your liking, but here are the most classic options, along with alternatives:
- Iceberg Lettuce – You can also try swapping out traditional shredded lettuce for a leafy alternative like shredded kale, cabbage (or even taco slaw !), or spinach.
- Cheddar Cheese – You could use Monterey Jack cheese, pepper jack, mozzarella, Mexican cheese blend, or any shredded cheese you prefer. Use pre-shredded to save time.
- Bell Pepper – Use green, red, orange, or even roasted red peppers if you have some on hand.
- Roma Tomato – You could also dice up cherry or grape tomatoes instead.
- Onion – I used a red onion, but you could use white onions, yellow onions, or shallots.
- Black Olives – Try green olives for a bit more tang.
- Cilantro – If you aren’t a fan of cilantro, you can omit it, or try parsley, chives, or green onions.

This section shows how to make 7 layer taco dip with meat, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique, to help you visualize it. For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card below .
- Cook the taco meat. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the beef, breaking apart with a spatula , until browned. Add the water and taco seasoning. Stir fry until the extra water evaporates and taco meat forms. Set aside.
- Combine sour cream and cream cheese. Beat sour cream and cream cheese in a large bowl with a hand mixer . Beat in taco seasoning.

- Layer the taco dip. Spread beef in a single layer in an 8×8 square glass casserole dish . Drop dollops of sour cream mixture over the beef and gently spread with a spatula. Top with lettuce, shredded cheese, bell peppers, red onions, tomatoes, and black olives, in that order.

This 7 layer taco dip is totally customizable, so feel free to add your favorite condiments or toppings! Here are some ideas:
- Add condiments – Try fresh homemade salsa or creamy guacamole .
- Make a bean layer – Need a dip with beans? Add one 16-ounce can (drained) of refried beans, black beans, or pinto beans, or mix them in with your ground beef layer.
- Go meatless – Alternatively, you could make this taco layer dip vegetarian friendly by using a mixture of beans and corn as the base layer and omitting the meat altogether.
- Store: Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap and aluminum foil keep in the fridge for up to a week.
- Meal prep: Make the taco meat, mix together the cream cheese and sour cream layer, and assemble together. But, wait to add the veggie toppings until you are ready to serve it.
- Freeze: Freezing taco dip is not recommended, as the consistency of the ingredients will change.

I personally love to add some more veggies in when I can, so I love to scoop up this layer dip with bell pepper strips. But really, there’s no wrong way to eat it. Here are some ideas:
- Chips – Potato chips or corn chips are the traditional choice for dipping, but you could make your own almond flour tortilla chips for a low carb option. This dip also works well with air fryer zucchini chips or crispy cheese crisps .
- Crackers – Crackers might be slightly unconventional when it comes to taco dip, but they work! Try flax crackers for a lighter option.
- Veggies – Serve with celery sticks, carrots, broccoli, bell peppers (shown in pictures), or cucumber slices.
These cheesy and creamy dips will become the star at any party — and they come together so fast!

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Crock Pot Queso Dip
- Large Skillet – Deep walls and a multi-functional shape make it perfect for frying, baking, sautéing, searing and more.
- Hand Mixer – Not only does this mixer make mixing the cream cheese sour cream layer easy, but it takes up very little storage space in my kitchen. Major win.
- Casserole Dish – I suggest using a clear dish for this layered taco dip recipe so that you can see each and every layer. This one is the perfect size.

Your comment gave me several serving options, that is very helpful!!! Thank you!!!
A bit surprised that this has meat in it. Also wonder if the crackers that are on this site will work as a “dipper” for this recipe. What goes well with this for dippers?
Wholesome Yum M
Hi Sandra, Yes! I have several cracker recipes on the site that will all work great for dipping in this recipe. Other alternatives would include pork rinds, sweet bell peppers, cucumbers, and celery.
Could you add salsa as a layer?
Hi Mary, Sure! It will change the final carb count, so be aware of that.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
Hi Lynda, Sorry about the confusion! There are no avocados or guacamole in the recipe, but you can top with some diced avocado if you like, or you can add an additional layer with guacamole above or below the sour cream layer.
You could also use pork rinds with this dip.
