This Halloween: What Does It Mean To Call Something 'Spooky'?

So, you're at your friend's elaborately decorated Halloween party. There are cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, bloody handprints on the wall, a frothing potion brewing on the stove. It's creepy! And scary! But is it ... spooky?

Sure, "spook" can refer to a ghost. It can refer to a spy. But as many of us know, it's also, sometimes, a racial slur for black people. One of our Ask Code Switch readers wrote in to ask about the etiquette of using words like spook and spooky.

During this, the season of murder mysteries and haunted hayrides, is it insensitive to say that you were spooked?

On Halloween, Insensitivity Goes Beyond Kimonos And Black Face

So here's the deal: Spook comes from the Dutch word for apparition, or specter. The noun was first used in English around the turn of the nineteenth century. Over the next few decades, it developed other forms, like spooky, spookish, and of course, the verb, to spook.

From there, it seems, the word lived a relatively innocuous life for many years, existing in the liminal space between surprise and mild fear.

It wasn't until World War II that spook started to refer to black people . The black Army pilots who trained at the Tuskegee Institute were referred to as the "Spookwaffe" — waffe being the German word for weapon, or gun. (Luftwaffe was the name of the German air force).

Once the word "spook" was linked to blackness, it wasn't long before it became a recognizable — if second-tier — slur.

But that wasn't the end of the story for spook. The word had a bit of a renaissance in the 1970s, with the release of the novel and classic film, The Spook Who Sat By The Door , by Sam Greenlee .

Both the book and movie tell the fictional story of the first black man recruited and trained by the CIA. That man goes through his training, works for a little while, and then quits his job and moves back to Chicago, where he secretly trains a group of young black "freedom fighters."

What A Thug's Life Looked Like In 19th Century India

The title of the movie, of course, both refers to spook meaning "black person" and spook meaning "spy." And as a satirical piece of literature written by an African-American author in the years following the civil rights movement, the use of "spook" was infused with an extra dose of irony.

Renee Blake is a sociolinguist who studies the way language is used in society, "whether it's based on race, class, gender or the like." She says she doesn't hear the word spook all that often, but she does have two salient reference points for it.

The first is The Spook Who Sat By The Door , and the second is the 2000 book and 2003 movie The Human Stain, by Phillip Roth. His novel tells the story of a professor at a New England college who is forced to resign after he calls two African-American students spooks.

The word spook hasn't just gotten fictional people in trouble. In 2010, Target apologized for selling a Halloween toy called "Spook Drop Parachuters" — literally miniature black figurines with orange parachutes.

In light of all this baggage, I asked Blake what she thought about the use of words like spook and spooky during Halloween. She said that, while it's clear that spook has multiple, distinct meanings, it's still important to think about context.

The way that certain words get attached to particular racial groups is incredibly complicated. ( Take thug , for example .)

"Be thoughtful about the fact that [spook] now might have the connotation of referring to a black person in a disparaging way," Blake says. "If someone says, 'Did you get spooked?' and there are no black people there, then, OK, you mean 'Did you get scared or frightened?' That's fine, I get it."

But once you insert black people into the situation, Blake says, it's important to be more tactful. "We know that the word 'niggardly' doesn't mean a black person, but let's be sensitive. Are you going to use the word niggardly in front of a group of young students in a classroom? No."

So, this Halloween, be a little cautious when it comes to describing your surroundings. And don't be afraid of creeping into the thesaurus for a spooky synonym.

To me, it's more fun to be aghast, bloodcurdled, or spine-chilled than "spooked."

(Bloomberg) -- A Canadian general criticized the Chinese air force over an incident off the coast of the Asian nation that apparently saw a fighter jet cut off a patrol plane and drop flares in its path.

The episode on Monday was reported by Global News, which had journalists on the Canadian surveillance aircraft. Chinese fighters also flew within 5 meters (5.5 yards) of the plane, it added.

“They became very aggressive and to a degree we would deem it unsafe and unprofessional,” Major-General Iain Huddleston told the Canadian news outlet. Canada didn’t want to have “anything untoward happen that would result in loss of life,” he said.

Beijing filed a diplomatic complaint with Ottawa over the incident in the South China Sea, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Tuesday at a regular press briefing in Beijing, adding that in recent years Canadian planes have conducted reconnaissance “against China.”

“Canadian airships have made trouble at the doorstep of China,” she said. “Canada should respect facts and stop spreading false information.”

China’s Defense Ministry didn’t immediately respond to a faxed request for comment.

The incident highlights China’s frustration over Western military flights near its shores, though they are carried out in international airspace. In May, the Pentagon said a Chinese fighter jet that swerved in front of a US reconnaissance aircraft over the South China Sea behaved in an “unnecessarily aggressive maneuver.”

Last year, Chinese fighters reportedly buzzed Canadian planes in the region and released small pieces of aluminum in front of Australian aircraft.

China claims all of the South China Sea as its territory, and such midair confrontations have the potential to escalate. In 2001, a US Navy surveillance plane collided with a Chinese fighter. The jet crashed and its pilot was never found, while the Navy’s EP-3 landed on the southern Chinese island of Hainan, provoking a ten-day standoff after which the 24 American crew members were finally released.

Canada said the 13-member crew of the plane involved in the incident Monday was part of a UN mission aimed at enforcing sanctions against North Korea to encourage the nation to end its nuclear weapons program.

The missions, which include Japan, France and the US, are aimed at spotting “evasion activities, in particular ship-to-ship transfers of fuel and other commodities,” according to Ottawa.

The ingredients needed for the blueberry ginger syrup include:

• 3/4 cup unsweetened ginger juice
• 3/4 cup sugar 
• 1/2 cup blueberries

The ingredients needed for the Blueberry Moscow Mule include: 

• 1- and 1/2-ounce vodka 
• 1/2-ounce blueberry ginger syrup 
• 1/2-ounce lime juice 
• 1 cup ginger beer

To create the blueberry ginger syrup:

• Place saucepan in medium heat and add the ginger juice, sugar, and blueberries.
• Once boiling, reduce heat and let simmer for an extra 20 minutes. 
• Strain the thick syrup into a sealable container. Store in the refrigerator.

To create the Classic Blueberry Moscow Mule:

• In a copper mug, add the ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice.

Let’s start with the blueberry vodka. 

The ingredients include:

• 2 pounds fresh blueberries, washed 
• 1.75 ml bottle of vodka 

This blueberry vodka recipe is easier than pie! In a sealable container, drop in the washed blueberries and pour in vodka. Cover the mixture and let this sit in room temperature for one week. After a week, voila! You’ll have yourself an easy, fruity drink that needs only crushed ice and great company to enjoy it with. 

But that’s not why we’re here. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty of this Blueberry Moscow Mule recipe. Here’s what you’ll need: 

• Fresh mint leaves 
• 2-3 ounces blueberry vodka  
• Juice of 1 lime 
• crushed ice 
• 12-ounce can of ginger beer
• In your palm, smash the stem of the mint leaf with your thumb then clap both hands together. This releases the flavor of the mint leaf much better than muddling ever will. 
• In a copper mug, drop in the clapped mint leaves then fill with crushed ice. 
• Add 2-3 ounces of blueberry vodka
• Squeeze in a wedge of lime, then top off this delightful concoction with ginger beer. 
• Add crushed ice.

Optional: Strain pieces of the blueberry from the vodka and use as a garnish. 

Note: If you or your guests find the mixture too strong, simply add more ginger beer into their mug.

Variation 2: Frozen Blueberry Mule 

This recipe relies heavily on crushed ice and the blueberry syrup as a base. This Blueberry Moscow Mule is a beautiful alternative to frozen margaritas! This is one of those recipes that take some level of preparation, but a few of these and you and your friends will be belting your favorite songs without a care in the world in no time. 

Create the simple syrup using these ingredients:

• 1 cup of sugar
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup fresh blueberries
• In a saucepan, add the sugar, water, and blueberries. 
• Place pan in medium flame until boiling.  
• Once boiling, lower the heat and let simmer for an additional 20 minutes. 
• Take the saucepan out of the flame, and, using a strainer, pour into a jar. Let the syrup cool down to room temperature before storing in the refrigerator. 

Now onto the Mule!

Ingredients needed include:

• 1 cup ginger beer 
• 4-ounce vodka 
• 2-ounce lime juice 
• 2-ounce blueberry syrup that you’ve got sitting in your fridge  
• Crushed ice 
• Mint leaves and blueberries for garnish
• Combine the ginger beer, vodka, lime juice, and blueberry syrup in a blender and blend accordingly. 
• Add crushed ice and blend again. 
• Pour into drink containers (copper mugs or margarita glasses) and garnish with fresh blueberries and mint leaves.
• Serve and sing your heart out!  

Variation 3: Blueberry Mule with Whiskey

This is an unorthodox variation of the Blueberry Mule . For this recipe, we’ll be using whiskey instead of the usual dash of vodka. This will add an unusual but ultimately delicious depth of smokey and sweet flavors to the mix. One great advantage of this variation is that it requires very little preparation, so it’s great for surprise guests or if you’ve just had a long, hard day and want to unwind with something other than a boring bottle of beer. 

The ingredients for this Blueberry Moscow Mule Recipe include:

• 1 lemon wedge 
• 2 tsp organic sugar 
• 15 fresh blueberries 
• 2-ounce whiskey 
• 1-2-ounce ginger beer
• In a shaker, muddle the lemon and blueberries in with the sugar. 
• Pour the whiskey in and shake.
• Fill a copper mug or a regular whiskey glass with crushed ice.
• Strain the blueberry with whiskey mixture into the glass.
• Top off with ginger beer.
• Garnish with lemon slices, blueberries, and mint leaves.  

Variation 4: Low Carb Keto Version

Watching out for your summer bod and enjoying a sweet drink every now and then shouldn’t have to be mutually exclusive activities. This Low Carb Keto Blueberry Mule sports only 72 calories and 2 grams net carbs, allowing you to both stick to your Keto diet and indulge in this sweet and (almost) sinful drink. 

This recipe requires a homemade blueberry juice for the base of this cocktail, and the ingredients needed include:

• 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 
• 1 tablespoon sugar substitute (Splenda, Equal, Stevia, or any granulated erythritol sweetener)
• 1/3 cup water
• In a blender, pour in the blueberries, sweetener, and water. Blend until smooth.
• Strain the juice as you pour into a jar.
• Store the blueberry juice in the refrigerator until use. 

To make the cocktail, prepare these ingredients:

• ½ ounce of the blueberry juice
• 1-ounce vodka
• ½ teaspoon lime juice
• 4-ounces diet ginger beer
• 1 teaspoon of sugar substitute (Splenda, Equal, Stevia, or any granulated Erythritol sweetener)
• ¼ teaspoon powdered cinnamon
• In a shaker, combine the blueberry juice, vodka, lime juice, and ice. Shake for 10 seconds. 
• Add the ginger beer in the shaker and stir with a spoon. 
• In a saucer, mix the cinnamon powder and sugar substitute
• Moisten the rim of the glass with the lime wedge and dip in the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
• Add ice into a glass and pour the mixture in.
• Garnish with lime and fresh blueberries. 

Variation 5: Blueberry Lemon Ice Cubes 

This simple preparation of blueberry ice cubes is exactly what it sounds like: ice cubes that are designed to both keep your drink cold and infuse a stronger blueberry flavor as you nurse the drink in your hand. This variation works absolutely perfect with the Classic Blueberry Moscow Mule! 

Prepare the ice cubes using these ingredients:

• 1 ½ cups of blueberries
• ½ fresh lemon
• ½ cup of white grape juice
• In a blender, squeeze out and pour in the lemon juice with the blueberries and grape juice. Blend until smooth. 
• Using a lidded ice tray, pour in the liquid.
• Place the tray in the fridge and wait a while. It’ll take more than a few hours to freeze, so it’s a good idea to prepare these ice cubes way ahead of time before entertaining any guests. 

Now, these ice cubes work best with the most basic of all Blueberry Moscow Mules! This is the stuff you will need per serving:  

• 5-7 blueberry ice cubes
• 2-ounces vodka
• 4-ounces ginger beer
• Fresh blueberries
• Mint leaves
• 2-3 slices of lemon
• Fill the copper mug with blueberry ice cubes.
• Pour in the ginger beer and vodka.
• Garnish with lemon slices, mint leaves, and fresh blueberries.
