- Lows So nice to ride in you might prefer it over your jet, finding a good chauffer is so hard these days.
- Verdict The Phantom makes the ultimate luxury statement—and then has the temerity to live up to it.
No automobile shouts the presence of Old Money louder than the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Its massive size, stately proportions, and imperious upright grille—topped with the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament—make a statement that passersby can't look away from as they wonder who might be sipping champagne in the sumptuously padded rear seat. The Phantom hues to Rolls tradition—for now—by still being powered by a nearly silent gasoline V-12 under its long hood. A pillowy soft ride floats you gracefully across life's harsh bumps. Plush leathers, handsome veneers, and beautifully hewn metal trim surround you in the capacious interior; coach rear doors power themselves open and closed regally at the touch of a button. There are endless customization possibilities, but no matter the color or interior trim, the Phantom delivers on its reputation for extravagantly luxurious motoring.

What's new for 2024.
The Phantom receives no updates for the 2024 model year, just a slight increase in pricing. The Phantom's styling, powertrain and features otherwise remain and provides the same luxurious feeling sedan from the previous model year.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Engine, transmission, and performance.
Prodigious power is provided by a silken 563-hp twin-turbo V-12 paired with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Acceleration is brisk, but Rolls-Royce's claimed 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph time isn't anything you'd appreciate your chauffeur trying to replicate. The Phantom is better suited to easing along lazily; delicate inputs to throttle and steering are what it likes best. To say that the ride is smooth would be an understatement—imagine being carried aloft on a fluffy cloud. The Phantom practically levitates over the road; it features a pothole-spotting camera that helps the suspension adapt to road imperfections in real time. It's a library-quiet, sensory-deprivation cocoon.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
A Phantom owner's conspicuous consumption is matched by the car's penchant for consuming fuel. The EPA's fuel-economy estimates run as low as 12-mpg city, although the Phantom's 20-mpg highway rating actually bests the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost's by 2 mpg. If we ever are lucky enough to have a chance to put the Phantom through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we'll update this story with test results. For more information about the Phantom's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Acres of wood, metal accents, and vast expanses of supple leather cover the cabin, which is no surprise for a car of this class. But there’s so much more: for instance, should you want to use your Phantom to support the arts, you can specify custom artwork in place of the standard instrument panel trim. Rolls-Royce offers both a standard- and long-wheelbase version of the Phantom, the latter stretched by 8.6 inches, much of which results as additional rear-seat legroom. Rear-hinged coach doors open to allow graceful and dramatic arrivals and departures. Rear-seat passengers can be treated to myriad luxuries such as deep-pile carpeted floor mats, power-adjustable seats with massage, a refrigerated console compartment for libations, remote controls for the infotainment system, and much, much more.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Speaking of infotainment, the Phantom comes standard with a large infotainment display artfully hidden behind a glass panel that stretches the full width of the dashboard. It's controlled via a rotary knob on the center console. Lest you think that rear-seat passengers are left out of the technology loop, the Phantom also features touchscreens that motor down from each of the front seatbacks to provide access to the car's audio and navigation systems, as well as a live-TV tuner so passengers won't fall behind on their favorite shows or sports while on the way to their next engagement.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Phantom's dizzying array of optional tech includes night vision and a distinct laser-light system, but Rolls-Royce also offers more conventional driver-assistance features such as forward-collision and lane-departure warnings as standard. For more information about the Phantom's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward collision warning
- Standard land-departure warning
- Available adaptive cruise control with night vision
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV and the smaller Ghost sedan , the Phantom comes with Rolls-Royce's four-year/unlimited-mile warranty and maintenance package as standard.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for 4 years or unlimited miles

Here's Why Rolls-Royce Cars Have the Spookiest Names
Phantom, the friendly Ghost and the Wraith

Phantom , on the other hand, has been a marketable nameplate for Rolls-Royce for almost a century, and we would pay serious money to have been at the unveiling of the very first Phantom when people heard that name for the first time. But of course, there weren't really auto shows back then—there were industrial exhibitions—and automakers didn't have the unveilings they do now. Still, hearing the name Phantom applied to a car for the first time must have been a mind-bender, because a century ago cars had really boring names like Two-Liter, or some guy's surname, or a string of random numbers. Or it was something brash, like Chevrolet Superior. There was little middle ground. (But it was mostly surnames.)
So how did Rolls-Royce get rolling with ghost-themed names?

The British automaker started out, like many others, with numbers, including the 1907 model that eventually gained the name Silver Ghost.
"Originally and simply called a '40/50,' the chassis of this car was first produced at Royce's Manchester works and later produced from 1908 at the Derby factory (still in use for aviation engine production) and between 1921 and 1926 in Springfield, MA, USA," the Silver Ghost Association says. "While the name 'The Silver Ghost' was originally given to chassis no 60551 and other cars were given individual names as well, the title 'Silver Ghost' was taken by the press, although the Company did not recognize the series as such until the introduction of the new Phantom range of cars in 1925."
So Rolls-Royce did not start out particularly hip when it came to marketing, but then again most cars back then were named for their displacement or cylinder count. So in a way it was rescued from boring obscurity by journalists.
What about the Phantom then?
That model, which debuted in 1925, replaced the Silver Ghost, with the automaker billing it as the "New Phantom" in a flash of marketing savvy.
Rolls-Royce's current lineup now stays true to the ghostly theme with a Phantom , Ghost , and Wraith in the lineup. But there's also Cullinan , the origin of whose name is not particularly spooky, but is definitely strange for other reasons.
And the photo above shows two Rolls cars that are actually haunted. For mechanical reasons.

Jay Ramey grew up around very strange European cars, and instead of seeking out something reliable and comfortable for his own personal use he has been drawn to the more adventurous side of the dependability spectrum. Despite being followed around by French cars for the past decade, he has somehow been able to avoid Citroën ownership, judging them too commonplace, and is currently looking at cars from the former Czechoslovakia. Jay has been with Autoweek since 2013.

Some Bad Stuff happened last year. Even luxury boutique automaker Rolls-Royce acknowledges this. But at least its customers weren't hit so hard that they couldn't still shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars for bespoke designs, which helped keep the automaker's craftspeople employed. Jobs!
The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective is a team of craftspeople, designers, and engineers who take a customer's Rolls-Royce a step further and customize it to their exact specifications and creativity, according to a press release . Because of the pandemic, Rolls said that its designers and customers "found themselves confined to the safety of their homes." Very responsible of them.
This, in turn, led to "a change in [the] source of inspiration from travel and its associated items of luxury grandeur, to rich and textural surroundings of the home, architecture and moments of stillness found in nature."
Same. We'll see how these custom cars turned out in a second, but if were me, my "rich and textural surroundings of the home" would include plastic takeout containers and the crisp whiteness of my KN95 masks . Perfect for a Wraith, in one girl's humble opinion.
Despite the pandemic and economic downturn, though, Rolls-Royce said it actually experienced a "robust increase" of bespoke commissions in 2020 over 2019. While a global crisis grips everyone else, why not stick your money where it matters: in a custom Rolls?
Read on to see some of those custom cars.
Part of Rolls-Royce's business is creating custom cars for customers willing to pay for the service. On average, the automaker experienced a "robust increase" of bespoke commissions in 2020 over 2019.
This is the Sportive Collection. It's comprised of two Black Badge Dawns and nine Black Badge Wraiths.
The interior has a colored weave that matches the car's exterior color. There are also hand-painted exterior coachlines.
The cars were commissioned for the United Arab Emirates.
The Arctic White and Hotspur Red Phantom is completely red inside, including its trunk.
It's so, so red.
The car was commissioned by a Rolls-Royce collector in Texas.
The inside of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan "Spirit of Russia" Collection has a map of Russia on its Starlight Headliner.
The Dawn Silver Bullet Collection turns the four-seater convertible into a two-seater convertible.
The cars are limited to just 50 examples around the world.
They're all painted in Brewster Silver Paint.
The Dusk in Tokyo collection is made of up a Phantom, Wraith, Dawn, and Cullinan. They're meant to celebrate Tokyo.
The Spirit of Ecstacy is depicted in rose gold.
The fascia clock is made of rose gold.
As are other details.
The illuminated fascia in the Rolls-Royce Ghost uses 152 LEDs and 90,000 laser-etched dots. It twinkles when you look at it.

It's limited to just 50 examples as well.
There's an in-motion, data-stream inspired pattern on the headliner.
The Spirit of Ecstacy bears the word "Kryptos" in code.
A South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu loaned her artistry to the Rolls-Royce Mahlangu Phantom.
It's a one-of-a-kind commission that features contemporary African art.
There are bold, vibrant colors and geometric shapes.
The Rolls-Royce Neon Nights Colour Trilogy includes a Dawn, Wrath, and Cullinan.
The colors are Lime Rock Green, Eagle Rock Red, and Mirabeau Blue.
It's a limited run of the cars. Only four cars of each color will be made.
The green is inspired by a green tree frog from Australia.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom "Iridescent Opulence" has more than 3,000 iridescent tail feathers. Sourced sustainably, of course.
The car was created through a partnership with Nature Squared, a Swiss materials specialist.
The whole thing is supposed to remind you of nature.
From the outside, the Rolls-Royce Steed Phantom Extended looks like a regular Phantom.
But look inside! There's an embroidered horse on the back door.
You'll find a little handpainted coachline detail of the sun and the eight planets of our Solar System on the Rolls-Royce Wraith "Inspired by Earth."
You can see an airbrushed satellite image of the Middle East on the fascia.
The car's hood also a satellite view of the Middle East.
The interior leather is colored to look like the Emirates' desert sand. The blue is supposed to represent the lakes and rivers.

Rolls-Royce Wraith review

Incredible road presence, sumptuous interior, (largely) effortless driving experience
Not as sporting as you might hope. A wee bit big, too
What is it?
The Wraith is billed as “the most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history”. The first bit is easily dealt with: a turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 sends 624bhp to the rear wheels, ten per cent more power than you’ll find even in the new Phantom and Cullinan.
As for the most dynamic? Well, you’d argue that’s not difficult, given Rolls has long mastered the art of hefty, comfy cars that are designed to soothe not scintillate. But the Wraith is based upon the Ghost limo, so it’s hardly got a sporting chassis at its core, though its rear axle has been widened and its wheelbase shortened.
“The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering,” says Rolls, “while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive.”
Achieving those high speeds ought to be a doddle; with two turbos, the Wraith has a ginormous 590lb ft of torque available from 1,500rpm, enough to shift its 2.4 tonnes to 60mph in 4.4secs. Quicker than hot hatches with not dissimilar power-to-weight ratios, and quite startling to experience in something with lambs’ wool floor mats.
Indeed, it may be the most sporting Rolls ever, but it’s still dripping in luxury. There are four finely proportioned seats, sumptuous materials across most surfaces and head- and leg-room aplenty, even in the rear. Don’t worry, the front seats electrically whirr forward to allow anyone climbing into the back some extra grace.
Its £250,000 starting price really is just the start, too. Few Rolls-Royces leave the Goodwood factory without first having been made fully bespoke to their buyer’s needs; colour-matched inside and out, fibre-optic star headlining fitted, the full works. Half the fun of having a Rolls-Royce isn’t driving it (or being driven in it), but the buying process itself.
The Wraith is now one of the oldest Rolls-Royces on sale, having arrived in 2013. The Ghost it’s spun from landed in 2010, and its drop-top sibling – the Dawn – started production in 2015. While the new-generation Phantom is sold only as a saloon, the Wraith is the car of choice if you want your Rolls-Royce to take the form of a two-door coupe.
Our choice from the range

What's the verdict?
Take Rolls-Royce’s billing too close to face value – by approaching the Wraith expecting a sports car – and you’ll be disappointed. Expect an ever so slightly sharpened Rolls, though, and you’ll discover a beguiling car that never fails to feel special. Unless you go looking too hard for BMW bits.
In objective terms, the Wraith has fallen a bit behind on tech and is tangibly a generation behind the new Phantom and Cullinan, not to mention other luxury car rivals. It’s also far too big and heavy to feel anything like approaching a driver’s car, something that must be commented upon given Rolls has pointed out that’s (kinda) what it’s meant to be.
But it’s a Rolls-Royce. Objectivity is rendered pointless by quarter-million-pound price tags, and as an automotive experience, the Wraith is matched only by other Rolls-Royces. It’s an experience all car enthusiasts should try and get a taste of at least once, and if you’re lucky enough to have the money and space to add a Rolls to your collection, there’s a considerable amount to recommend choosing the one that looks and feels most sporting.

I can spend the whole day inside. It just soaking up the luxury boozing out of every pore. There's richness in every small detail from beautiful carpets. The luxury leather trim, and the soft leather seats with feather-filled headrests sitting at the back. We have our own set of controls, that operate everything. It has a beautiful starlight roof and top-quality luxury. To enjoy this car. I have to be a billionaire.
Its a very nice and unique car
It's a very good car but the mileage is terrible. There weren't any service centers when I took this to Ladakh. It's also tough to maintain since when I used this as a school bus (I am a bus driver), all the kids start dirtying my beautiful matte carpets. This car is very overpriced. Get a Maruti Alto instead since it can seat 4 people and has good mileage

Rolls-Royce Ghost gets the best luxury car award at the Moscow International Motor Show

Rolls Royce Phantom had bagged the award of the Best Luxury Car of the Year 2009 . And this year, Rolls-Royce Ghost has been crowned as the best luxury car at the Moscow International Motor Show. 150 journalists voted in favor of this majestic car during press exhibition days and it was officially announced a couple of days back at Crocus Expo. James Crichton, Regional Director Rolls-Royce Motor Cars for Europe and South Africa stated, “The award comes as Rolls-Royce makes its debut at the Moscow Motor Show and I am thrilled that our Ghost, the Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection and the Russian debut of Phantom Series II have been so warmly received. Rolls-Royce represents luxury like no other brand and our Russian clients appreciate that cars carrying the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine represent the pinnacle of luxury, the ultimate in refinement and the embodiment of success.” This comes as no surprise since Moscow as recently been honored as the Billionaire capital where most of world’s wealthiest reside.

Robb Report
Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös Is Retiring. He Met With Us to Explain Why.
A key indicator as to the overall health and strength of a government or industry, is how easily it transitions in leadership. In the nearly 120 years that Rolls-Royce-the esteemed British manufacturer of engines and luxury automobiles-has been in operation, it has seen its share of corporate tumult and fiscal uncertainty. Yet under the stewardship of Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since 2010, the marque has experienced a renaissance, expanding both in model line and customers while not sacrificing exclusivity. It's been announced today, though, that Müller-Ötvös is retiring. Succeeding him on December 1 will be Chris Brownridge, presently the CEO of BMW UK.
Robb Report was given advance notice of the departure by 63-year-old Müller-Ötvös himself back in June, during our test-drive of Spectre , Rolls-Royce's first all-electric model. But it wasn't until Monterey Car Week and the debut of La Rose Noire , Goodwood's latest one-off coachbuilt example, that we were able to speak with him at length about his career path, his span as CEO, and how that time influenced his perception of luxury (as seen in the accompanying video).
"It's something you can't plan for," says Müller-Ötvös, when asked about heading up such a storied marque. Joining the BMW Group in 1989, the German-born executive had been "massively involved in branding discussions with Rover, when BMW acquired the Rover Group," he notes, citing that he also helped relaunch Mini. "That brought me deeply into British brands," he says, "also learning a lot about how special they are, how emotional they are, how carefully curated they are, and how carefully you, yourself, need to curate them, otherwise you could fail in really positioning them properly in the world." When he was eventually approached to captain Rolls-Royce, "it was the right moment in time," he says, "that's something I didn't need to sleep on."
Yet during that period, the automaker was in danger of losing relevance as its customer demographic was aging out. According to Müller-Ötvös, the average Rolls owner was 56 years old. In answer, he sought out the advice of numerous private banks and listened to their predictions as to how the landscape of ultra-high-net-worth individuals would be changing in the coming years. "They gave me some remarkable insights . . . and it happened as they forecasted" he says.
Foremost among his takeaways was that this top echelon would be getting far younger. Armed with this intel, Müller-Ötvös knew there had to be a corporate shift. "When I took the helm, it was 80 percent chauffeur-driven and 20 percent self-driving-now, it's completely the opposite," he says, regarding the state of the brand. The course change was first apparent with the introduction of the two-door Wraith, followed quickly by the second iteration of the modern Ghost sedan, which has gone on to become the most commercially successful model in the Rolls-Royce pantheon. Then there was Dawn , the two-door convertible debuted in 2016, which drew a larger segment of women to the fold. That same year, the decidedly edgy (at least by Rolls standards) Black Badge trim option premiered, initially on the Wraith.
The Black Badge idea came to Müller-Ötvös after seeing that select owners were already giving their cars a more visually aggressive aesthetic, blacking-out signature elements. "Why not create the alter ego of Sir Henry Royce, and create a more menacing, darker character and positioning of the brand," he remembers thinking. "That was super successful for us in reaching out to a completely new breed of clients."
That move is one of the contributing factors to lowering the average age of Rolls-Royce owners to 43, which is below that of Mini. It's even younger for those who buy the latest Ghost, completely revised in time to be named the Robb Report Luxury Car of the Year in 2021 . But that doesn't mean that the older guard was left wanting. The stewardship of Müller-Ötvös ushered in the eighth generation of the flagship Phantom, as well as a resurgence of coachbuilt examples like the eight-figure Boat Tail projects.
His imprint on the marque is arguably most indelible on two fronts: introducing an SUV (or high-sided vehicle in Rolls parlance) and bringing the automaker synonymous with 12-cylinder internal-combustion engines into the age of electrification with Spectre. Those mandates, met with skepticism and criticism by some at first, were refined through extensive discussions with the client base, whom he met with regularly.
"I will miss Torsten dearly," says renowned car-collector Michael Fux. "Torsten really ‘got me' from the onset of our relationship, despite my requests for some zany colors. Some of my fondest memories include Torsten, especially the Mille Miglia race and receiving my Rolls Royce's from him at Pebble Beach."
Müller-Ötvös may be handing over the reins to Brownridge, and finding more time for fly-fishing and boating, but he will certainly stay active in consulting and what he calls "non-executive roles," although he's unsure exactly where at the moment. What he can answer definitively is whether there are any regrets that linger from his tenure. "None. Seriously," he says. "Looking in hindsight, I would not change anything."

Yesterday evening Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Moscow presented the unique Wraith Black & Bright collection for the first time, inspired by the mood of Moscow nights. The limited edition, exclusive to the Muscovite dealership, features three Wraith Black Badge motor cars in individual colour combinations: Brennen Green, Orange metallic and Twilight Purple combined with Diamond Black. The green lights of the Moscow City district, the sparks of the cars passing by, the warm orange illumination of the historic Hotel Ukraine building these are key touches to the ambiance of Moscow nights, said Tatiana Fitzgerald, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Moscow. She continued: Our clients conquer the business world by pushing the boundaries and wish to celebrate their success. Wraith Black Badge is the natural choice to encapsulate this spirit in the Black and Bright collection ambition, unconventional thinking and pure joy of life in the city that never sleeps. Surfaces are made from aerospace-grade aluminum-threaded carbon fibre. The Unlimited infinity symbol, signifying the Black Badge Series, is embroidered on the upholstery where black leather marries the vibrant touches of Orange metallic, Twilight Purple and Brennen Green, delivering a more edgy feel to the cabin. Munich. The BMW Group sold 93,931 fully-electric BMW and MINI vehicles in the third quarter – an increase of +79.6% compared to the same period of last year. The BMW brand once again doubled its third-quarter deliveries of fully-electric vehicles from the same period of last year (+100.3%). The company was thus able to translate customer interest in its fully-electric products into dynamic growth.
“The sales success of the third quarter shows that our customers appreciate our wide range of attractive products across all drive technologies. Our fully-electric products, in particular, are benefiting from high demand worldwide – as seen in our BEV sales, which significantly outperformed the total BEV market in the first nine months,” said Pieter Nota, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales. “Overall, we are on track to meet our growth targets for 2023,” Nota continued.
The BMW Group delivered a total of 621,699 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles to customers in the third quarter. This represents a year-on-year growth of +5.8%. In the third quarter, the company continued to build on its strong competitive position in key core markets. Between January and September, BMW Group sales climbed to 1,836,563 units (+5.1%).
As previously announced in August, the company expects to see solid growth in deliveries for the full year 2023 (previously, slight growth). Growth drivers include models from the upper price segment, as well as fully-electric vehicles – with BEVs projected to account for 15% of total vehicle sales in 2023.
BMW brand remains number one in global premium segment
In the third quarter, the BMW brand delivered 549,941 vehicles to customers worldwide – an increase of +6.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. Thanks to its attractive line-up, the brand is benefiting from high demand and remains number one in the global premium segment.
The BMW brand is reporting particularly strong demand for its fully-electric vehicles; in the third quarter, BEV deliveries once again doubled from the same period of last year (+100.3%) to 83,211 units. Between January and September, 217,138 fully-electric BMW vehicles were delivered to customers.
The BMW 4 Series models and, in particular, the fully-electric BMW i4*, are proving especially popular, while the BMW iX1* and X1 are also highly sought-after. Models from the upper price segment, like the 7 Series, the updated BMW X7, and the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models, are also driving sales growth.
In addition, the company is receiving very positive customer feedback on the new BMW 5 Series range and, especially, the fully-electric BMW i5*. “With the launch of the new BMW i5, we will have another attractive fully-electric vehicle in the market that will further accelerate the ramp-up of electromobility. New orders already reflect our customers’ high level of enthusiasm for this new model,” explained Nota. With the launch of the BMW i5, the BMW Group will have a fully-electric option in all its core segments.
BMW M success story continues in third quarter
With 48,978 units sold worldwide in the third quarter – a year-on-year increase of +13.2% – BMW M once again demonstrated its strength in the profitable high-performance and performance segments. Sales were also boosted by the introduction of the new BMW XM*, just six months ago. Following the start of production in July, the BMW i7 M70* and i5 M60* models are the newest members of the M family, combining fully-electrified M Power with the highest level of elegance, luxury and comfort. M GmbH therefore feels confident about the final quarter of 2023 and is on track for another record year.
MINI releases new models on the road to all-electric model line-up
The MINI brand delivered 70,384 (+2.6%) vehicles to customers worldwide in the third quarter. The latest MINI limited editions – the MINI John Cooper Works 1to6 Edition and the MINI Clubman Final Edition – both with exclusive design and equipment features, contribute to the strong popularity of MINI brand vehicles. Between July and September, MINI sold 10,720 fully-electric MINI Cooper SE* and MINI Cooper SE Convertibles (-0.4%). With the recently launched new electric MINI Cooper and the upcoming release of the electric MINI Countryman in 2024, the MINI brand continues to forge ahead on its road to an all-electric model line-up.
Rolls-Royce prepares for initial customer deliveries of Spectre
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars sold 1,374 vehicles in the third quarter (-9,0%). This was in line with expectations, given that production of Dawn and Wraith was discontinued in the second quarter and the brand’s production facilities in Goodwood are gearing up for initial customer deliveries of the Rolls-Royce Spectre in the coming weeks. Interest in the fully-electric super coupé remains exceptionally high and order books are already full until 2025. Rolls-Royce continues to deliver Coachbuild and Bespoke creations and demand for Phantom, Ghost, Cullinan and Black Badge models remains strong. With a robust order book and 4,555 vehicles (-3.1%) sold since the start of the year, the company is approaching the year-end with confidence.
BMW Motorrad: Third-quarter sales confirm continued high customer demand
BMW Motorrad delivered a total of 52,037 (+0.5%) motorcycles and scooters to customers between July and September of its 2023 centenary year. Building on the previous all-time sales high it posted for the first half-year, strong customer demand for BMW Group motorcycles and scooters continued in the third quarter. The highly attractive product range, with the successful market launch of innovative new models, like the fascinating Power Roadster M 1000 R, lays the foundation of BMW Motorrad’s success. With the upcoming market launch of the new R 1300 GS, BMW Motorrad will have its most important product highlight of the year in showrooms by the end of the fourth quarter. As the world’s most successful premium motorcycle, the redesigned Boxer GS will give BMW Motorrad sales a major boost.
BMW & MINI sales in the regions/markets
In China , the BMW Group sold 210,331 BMW and MINI vehicles in the third quarter (-1.8%).
In the US , 91,849 BMW and MINI vehicles were delivered to customers between July and September of this year. This represents an increase of +7.8%.
In Europe, sales of BMW and MINI vehicles totalled 221,496 units for the third quarter (+12.9%).
In Germany , 70,901 BMW and MINI vehicles were registered during this period.

Biden prepares for Israel visit as Gaza braces for possible ground invasion
Rolls-royce ceo to retire after growing sales 600% in 14 years.
Rolls-Royce’s CEO plans on stepping down at the end of November, handing the reins over to current BMW UK head, Chris Brownridge.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös’ accomplishments include a more than 600% increase in sales since he stepped into the position in 2009, to 6021 units sold in 2022, while doubling the average price per car and lowering the average buyer age.
Müller-Ötvös was also responsible for bringing the Cullinan SUV, a decision for which he was widely mocked. Today, the Cullinan represents about half of global sales.
“I’ve had nearly 14 years of shaping the brand,” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce, who is departing November 30, told Autoweek during a California drive of the new Spectre back in June.
“I wanted to have a clear long-term strategy in place before I left, and the Spectre, Rolls-Royce’s first electric car, represents an important milestone in that evolution. I don’t feel there is unfinished business.” The CEO’s retirement was announced October 5.
Thinking of his legacy, Müller-Ötvös, who joined the company in 2010, said, “I think I was able to rejuvenate Rolls-Royce in a substantial way, both in terms of volume and price. When I arrived, the brand was on a pedestal. We introduced new models and a younger clientele. We forged good relationships, which is key and one reason BMW left me in the position for so long.”
Müller-Ötvös was Rolls’ longest-serving CEO since Claude Johnson (“the hyphen in Rolls-Royce”) who served from 1910 to his death in 1926.
Succeeding Müller-Ötvös will be Chris Brownridge, currently CEO of BMW in the UK. “He’s coming in with strong ties throughout the BMW Group, and being British he has a natural affinity for the brand,” said Gerry Spahn, the company’s U.S. spokesman.
BMW is the fourth-largest brand in British sales currently, and produced a tenth of the battery EVs sold there last year. Brownridge, who was not available for comment, told The Guardian , “I genuinely think we are on the edge of probably the most exciting time in the industry.”
The CEO’s accomplishments are there in the raw numbers. The company sold around 1000 cars in 2009, and 6021 in 2022, a sales record. The average Rolls cost €250,000 in 2010, and sold to clients averaging 56 years old.
Today, the typical car goes for €500,000 and the average buyer is 43. The company’s sales revenue increased from €250 million to approximately €3 billion during the CEO’s tenure. Operating margins are said to be as high as 30 percent. “We are extremely profitable for the BMW Group,” said Spahn.
Quite a bit of the company’s success can be attributed to its best-selling model, the Cullinan SUV, unveiled in 2018. “They said to me, ‘You must be bonkers to be developing an SUV,’” Müller-Ötvös said.
The Cullinan represented about half of global sales in 2022, followed by the Ghost, which was over 30 percent and the Phantom with 10 percent. The latter two were the brand’s only two models when the new CEO took over in 2010; since then the Cullinan, Wraith, and Dawn were introduced.
Rolls-Royce has invested approximately $2.5 billion in new electric designs and plants, and will be an all-electric brand by the end of 2030. The Spectre goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year, is sold out through 2024 and into 2025, Spahn said. The plug-in Rolls starts at $420,000 but goes well into the low $500,000s with options.
The company is not divulging either the volume of its pre-orders or its planned production numbers, but Müller-Ötvös has said that 40 percent of Spectre customers are new to the brand.
“An EV naturally fits with the Rolls-Royce idea of making the cabin a rolling sanctuary, but the Spectre illustrates that craftsmanship is at the center of the brand regardless of what’s powering the wheels,” said Michael Austin, senior research analyst for EVs and mobility at Guidehouse Insights.
“It interesting how the perception of EV has changed over Müller-Ötvös’ tenure. The positive reception for the Spectre is 180 degrees from the 102EX concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, which Rolls-Royce customers at the time universally rejected, according to some reports.”
Müller-Ötvös doubled down on Rolls’ commitment to individualized “bespoke” production. “Clients are intrigued to see cars go down the assembly line to their own specifications,” he said.
Cars in the invitation-only Coachbuild series such as the exclusive Boat Tails, can escalate the bottom line far beyond the €500,000 average price for price-is-no-object customers. The third and final car in the series, first shown last year, was estimated at $28 million. The company’s Black Badge editions also aim at the next level. Rolls is expanding production for Coachbuild and bespoke at its Goodwood, England, facilities.
Müller-Ötvös, who drives a Morgan Plus Four for fun, had been at BMW since 1996, and was named director of the Mini brand in 2000. His future plans include fly fishing in Germany and Switzerland.

Ghost ékleipsis, seize a celestial wonder.
The seldom-seen alignment of Sun and Moon, a total solar eclipse is a magical — yet fleeting — cosmic phenomenon that inspires momentary awe. The Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection immortalises this brief spectacle, defying the boundaries of space and time for a cohort of audacious individuals.
The collection is commissioned exclusively through the Rolls-Royce Private Office — an inspirational space for owners and Bespoke experts to converse, collaborate, and create together.
To own Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis is to grasp an everlasting eclipse; to hold and conserve spellbinding beauty.

SAVOUR A TRANSIENT SKY
Upon closing the doors and starting the engine, the stars in the Starlight Headliner simultaneously darken and a gleaming circle of fibre-optic lights appear, representing the totality of a solar eclipse and the bright ring that surrounds the lunar silhouette. The celestial scene lasts for precisely seven minutes and 31 seconds — the longest possible duration of a total solar eclipse. Once this time has lapsed, the headliner’s full constellation of stars is restored.

WITNESS RADIANCE
A show of brilliance, the illuminated fascia is laser-etched with dazzling stars symbolising the timeline of a total eclipse. The size and position of each star was delicately adjusted by a single designer, ensuring a mesmeric effect.
The Diamond Ring effect occurs when a solitary bead of sunlight appears around the Moon immediately before and after a total solar eclipse. The Bespoke collection clock, adorned with a brilliant-cut 0.5-carat diamond, evokes this celestial point of light. The timepiece is finished with etchings on the dark aluminium surround, exposing a bright halo of metal beneath.

CHASE AN IMMERSIVE SUNSET
During the darkest moment of a total eclipse, a mesmerising sight transpires — a twilight sky becomes visible in all directions, creating the illusion of a 360-degree sunset. This wondrous vision is mirrored across the bi-coloured seats. Artisans achieved the gradient by tinting Mandarin leather black, then applying 200,000 intricate perforations to reveal the fiery colour beneath.

REACH THE COSMIC DARKNESS. PRESERVE THE ALIGNMENT OF SUN AND MOON.

FOR THE OWNERS OF BLACK BADGE GHOST ÉKLEIPSIS, AN EPHEMERAL MOMENT IS MADE ETERNAL.
A hand-painted Coachline depicts the gradual transition from sunlight to darkness as the Moon crosses the Sun’s burning path. The motif is set against a background of Lyrical Copper — a dark exterior colour enriched with powdered copper pigment. In light, the pigment reveals a dramatic iridescence, capturing the ethereal light cast by an eclipse.
RELISH RARITY
Illuminated technical fibre Treadplates denote the number of motor cars within the Private Collection. Limited to just 25 models, the collection is as rare as an eclipse itself.

White Wall tyres and Mandarin brake callipers form a striking fusion of colour and detail. Contrasting the collection’s darkened aesthetic, Mandarin recalls the intense pulses of sunlight observed during the meeting of Sun and Moon.
MARVEL AT THE BEAUTY OF AN ECLIPSE
The Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection embodies the magnificence of the sky's most awe-inspiring event — leaving an indelible impression on those who witness it.
