True to her word, Swift played the song again on August 5 in Los Angeles.
"Clean"
"Clean," cowritten by Imogen Heap, is a fan-favorite track from her classic pop album, "1989." It was requested by Gracie Abrams, one of Swift's opening acts in Texas.
After fans expressed disappointment on TikTok that "Clean" wouldn't be repeated, Swift renewed hope with a comment that said, "I think I could probably have done it better in a higher key so that's technically a mess up."
She performed the song again two months later in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

"Mad Woman"
Swift brought out Dessner once again in Tampa to perform "Mad Woman" on the piano.

While speaking to the crowd, Swift introduced the "Speak Now" single as "something that you would know and scream along with."
Shortly before the concert, Swift was spotted filming a music video with Joey King , who previously starred in the "Mean" music video .
"You're Not Sorry"
Swift said "You're Not Sorry" is another song she "fell in love with" while rerecording "Fearless."
"Wonderland"
Swift told the crowd in Houston, Texas that "Wonderland" is a "twisted" take on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

Swift described the "Midnights" bonus track as "one of our favorite songs we've done together."
"Mine"
Swift introduced "Mine" as a sort of precursor to "Folklore."
"I talk a lot about how 'Folklore' was the first time I was writing in characters and stuff, but actually 'Speak Now,' I was inventing scenarios that definitely weren't happening in my life," she said onstage .
Swift said she relates to "Speak Now" more as an adult, describing her songwriting process at the time as "cinematic" and using a lyric from "Mine" as an example: "There's a drawer of my things at your place."
"Those are things that I was not partaking in at 18 and 19 when I wrote these songs, but it's been such a privilege and such a treat to go back and rerecord them," she continued. "It's really crazy to go back and listen to these songs that at the time were fantasy but now feel really relatable to me."
"Gold Rush"
Before performing "Gold Rush" as the first surprise song in Philadelphia, Swift clarified an oft-debated lyric: "I see me padding across your wooden floors / With my Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door."
"I saw some people wondering if it was the band the Eagles or the team the Eagles," Swift told the crowd . "And I love the band the Eagles, but guys, like, come on, I'm from Philly. Of course it's the team."

"Dear John"
Before introducing "Dear John," Swift asked fans not to use "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" as an excuse to cyberbully her exes .
"I'm 33 years old. I don't care about anything that happened to me when I was 19," she said. "I'm not putting this album out so you can go on the internet and defend me against someone you think I wrote a song about 14 million years ago."

In the "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" prologue , which can be found in physical copies of the album, Swift described "Last Kiss" as "the saddest song I've ever written."
She messed up the lyrics while performing the ballad, meaning she will likely play it again during the Eras Tour.

"Castles Crumbling"

"Stay Stay Stay"
Swift hadn't performed the upbeat love song since the Red Tour.

The "1989" bonus track was inspired by her friends Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham , who were in a relationship when the album was written.

What Makes A Good Taylor Swift Surprise Song?
The Eras Tour nightly surprise songs have become a very big deal, and for good reason.
On Friday, June 9, Taylor Swift performed “Haunted” as her first surprise song. Walking up to the tip of the stage, her flowing magenta gown shimmering under the lights, she teased the upcoming arrival of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , and launched into the breakup ballad. Afterwards, she switched over to the piano and without introduction began belting out Red deep cut, “I Almost Do.” By the end of those two songs, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
The Eras Tour surprise (or as some Swifties call them, “secret”) songs have become a big deal, and for good reason. For those who aren’t already familiar, Swift acoustically performs two different off-the-setlist tracks at every Eras Tour performance, with the intention of never repeating a song. These selections aren’t announced ahead of time — hence them being “secret” — so fans find out what she’s playing in the moment, as she’s playing them. (Swifties are nonetheless still trying to predict which surprise songs she’ll play each show by compiling huge spreadsheets that track which songs she’s played, and those she has yet to play.) They’re the sole part of her gargantuan, three-plus-hour-long extravaganza that’s spoiler resistant, so as you can imagine, they’ve become very special in the Swiftian Eras Tour lore.
Ask any Swiftie and they’ll tell you their unique wishlist of surprise songs. “New Romantics!” “Teardrops On My Guitar!” “Our Song!” “Cornelia Street!” (Most of these have already been played, by the way.) But what constitutes a good — or even great — surprise song performance? And are there potentially bad surprise songs?
Perhaps those who were in attendance on her third night at MetLife could speak on that last question. For that show’s surprise songs, Swift toted out an acoustic version of the already generally disliked “Welcome To New York,” a confusing and disappointing option for many reasons. It was her last night in the city, so there was nothing particularly “welcoming” about it. The song, which my friend who attended the show believes was secretly commissioned by New York City’s Division Of Tourism, hit a bit too on the nose; it’s the obvious choice. There’s nothing in the track one can really emotionally connect to, and whatever life the song’s exuberant synth production made up for on its studio recording was completely stripped away when Swift repurposed it as an acoustic guitar track .
Of course, “Welcome To New York” (among a select few others like “Me!”) is an outlier. Generally, any of Swift’s songs would make a good surprise song, but this made me think that perhaps timing, location, and other factors — like whether a song already has an established canon among Swifties — contribute to the excitement around surprise songs.
Take Swift’s choice of “Haunted” in Detroit. The show followed the singer’s official tracklist unveiling of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , so having her perform a fan favorite from the album made complete sense. Similarly, Swift playing “Teardrops On My Guitar,” the song that broke her career, in Nashville, the city where she broke her career, was logical. The same can be said about “The Best Day,” Swift’s touching ode to her mother from Fearless , which she performed on Mother’s Day in Philadelphia.
Outside of context, the stories fans spin around certain songs help contribute to a song’s specialness. No wonder every Swiftie is dying to hear “Cornelia Street,” or “Sweet Nothings,” or “New Year’s Day” post-breakup with Joe Alwyn, as they’re songs inextricably tied to the English actor. Personally, my wish list included “Tim McGraw” and “Our Song,” two of her earliest hits, because who knows if we’ll ever get to hear those songs again after this tour?
The morning after the show at brunch, my friend brought up one more extremely crucial point about the surprise songs that stuck with me: The importance of that one, shoutable lyric, that one bridge, that one part of the song that turns a good live music moment into a transcendent, transformative one. When you’re standing in the dark with Swift — who’s holding just a guitar or sitting at the piano, no other distractions around — singing with the songwriter who wrote those words, it’s like none other. Think “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” and the thrill of 50,000 people screaming, “give me back my girlhood, it was mine first” in unison. Or the entirety of the bridge of 1989 hit “Out Of The Woods.”
Last Friday night on the floor of Ford Field, that resounding moment for us was the chorus of “Haunted,” which took on a different shade of grief in the aftermath of, well, you know what. Or maybe, it was the bridge of “I Almost Do,” that had the young teen in front of me screeching until her throat cut out. Really, it could’ve been any moment of those two songs because, who am I kidding, it was just incredible to be there.

Each night on The Eras Tour, Taylor performs a whopping 44-song setlist . The concert is split up into different segments as an homage to each album. With extravagant production, Swift sings, plays guitar, dances with her crew to a roaring crowd. “There’s nothing in history to compare, Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone wrote. “This is her best tour ever, by an absurd margin. It’s a journey through her past, starring all the different Taylors she’s ever been, which means all the Taylors that you’ve ever been. Taylor always designs every tour to be the best night of your life. But she designed this one to be the best night of all your lives.”

So why exactly does Taylor Swift do Surprise songs on The Eras tour? Every night, the “Love Story” singer strips it down to an acoustic set featuring her piano and guitar and sometimes special guests. “The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” she said during her first Eras tour concert in Glendale, Arizona, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

How Taylor Swift chooses her Surprise Songs for Eras Tours

How does Taylor Swift choose her surprise songs for each Eras tour date? Like Taylor said, there shouldn’t be a circumstance where a song is played twice (unless she messes up on the first try). Taylor’s ten album repetoire is wide enough that there’s songs enough to cover more than 50 dates.
🎥| @TaylorSwift13 debuts "Snow On The Beach" performance pic.twitter.com/K87w73cPNm — The Swift Society (@TheSwiftSociety) March 25, 2023
The day after she dedicated her surprise song to fellow singer Lana Del Rey who featured on the song “Snow on The Beach.” “Lana Del Rey put out a new album. It’s called Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd . Guys, it’s so good. You probably already know that, but it’s just extraordinary. I just think she’s the best that we have. I think we need to make it a priority as a group to stream, buy, support this album and this artist. She knows I’m obsessed with her, and she was kind enough to make a song with me on Midnights called ‘Snow on the Beach’ because she’s a generous king. She did that for me, and I’ll never forget how nice she’s been to me. It’s so cool when you have favorite artists and they turn out to be so nice to you. I wanted to just do some promo for her, and also, in honor of this brilliant album that she just put out, I wanted to play ‘Snow on the Beach.’” She performed the song for the first time.
She also brought out frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff during her New Jersey dates. “I know you’ve wanted to hear this song,” Swift teased before playing the fan fave “Getaway Car”. “He’s been one of my best friends — he feels like a family member,” Swift said while welcoming “Jersey’s own” Jack Antonoff.

As of August 27th, Taylor has performed 17 from Red (Taylor's Version), 15 from Speak Now (Taylor's Version), 14 from Fearless (Taylor's Version), 10 from Taylor Swift, 11 from 1989, 9 from Midnights, 7 from evermore, 9 from Lover, 6 from folklore, and 7 from Reputation.
Plus one soundtrack song ('I Don't Wanna Live Forever) and one extra song that's not her own ('I miss you, I'm sorry' with Gracie Abrams).
So far, Taylor has played an additional 106 songs from her own discography as surprise songs.
What surprise songs will Taylor Swift perform again?
Over the course of The Eras Tour, Taylor has mentioned that she has a few rules when it comes to playing surprise songs more than once. Rule 1: If she messed up, she's allowed to play it again. Rule 2: Midnights songs are exempt and she can play them "however many times I want..."
However, fans are reporting that Taylor might have thrown the rule book out the window when she performed 'Our Song' again, as she didn't appear to mess it up when she first performed it.
Here's the list of surprise songs that Taylor will likely be performing again, according to Taylor herself or fans who were there on the night:
- 'Speak Now'
- 'Gorgeous'
- 'Out of the Woods'
- 'When Emma Falls In Love'
- 'right where you left me'
- 'Last Kiss'
- 'Maroon' (Played three times on May 26th, August 3rd and August 27th)
- 'Snow On The Beach' (Played twice on March 24th and August 25th)
- 'You're On Your Own Kid' (Played three times on April 14th, August 5th and August 26th)
- 'Question..?'
- 'The Great War'
- 'High Infidelity'
- 'Would've Could've Should've'
- 'Hits Different'
- 'Sweet Nothing'
- 'Clean' (Played again on May 28th in East Rutherford)
- 'Our Song' (Played again on August 4th in Los Angeles)
Taylor performed 'Nothing New' with Phoebe Bridgers on the nights Phoebe appears as a support act, but the song was not one of the two surprise songs. It's unclear if Taylor will perform the song again later down the line as a surprise song, but it is possible.
Taylor also performed 'No Body, No Crime' with HAIM on the nights they supported the show. It's also unclear if Taylor will perform that one again solo later down the line.

What surprise songs does Taylor Swift still have left to play?
With Taylor performing two surprise songs a night, it's pretty much a given that she will run out before she finishes the entire tour. It's currently unclear if she's planning to reset the list for the international tour dates, but either way, international fans heading to the Eras Tour will likely hear some repeats.
That said, there's still plenty of tracks that Taylor still has the option to perform. Here's all the songs that she has not yet performed as surprise songs:
- Taylor Swift : 'The Outside', 'Stay Beautiful', 'Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)', 'A Perfectly Good Heart'
- Fearless (Taylor's Version): ' The Way I Loved You', 'Change', 'Untouchable', 'Come In With The Rain' 'Superstar', 'We Were Happy', 'That’s When', 'Don’t You', 'Bye Bye Baby'
- Speak Now (Taylor's Version): 'Better Than Revenge', 'Innocent', 'Superman', 'Electric Touch', 'Foolish One'
- Red (Taylor's Version) : 'Girl At Home', 'Ronan', 'Babe', 'Forever Winter', 'Run', 'The Very First Night', 'Safe & Sound', 'Eyes Open'
- 1989 (Taylor's Version) : '"Slut!"', 'Say Don't Go', 'Now That We Don't Talk', 'Suburban Legends', 'Is It Over Now?'
- Reputation : 'End Game', 'I Did Something Bad', 'So It Goes…', 'Dancing With Our Hands Tied'
- Lover : 'London Boy', 'Soon You’ll Get Better', 'Me!', 'It’s Nice To Have A Friend'
- Folklore : 'Epiphany', 'Peace', 'Hoax'
- Evermore : 'Happiness', 'Long Story Short', 'Closure', 'It’s Time To Go'
- Midnights : 'Labyrinth', 'Bigger Than The Whole Sky', 'Paris', 'Glitch', 'Dear Reader', 'You’re Losing Me'
Alongside those album tracks, there's also several standalone and soundtrack songs that Taylor could add into the mix: 'Crazier', 'Sweeter Than Fiction', 'Only The Young', 'Carolina', 'I Heart?', 'Beautiful Eyes', 'Beautiful Ghosts'... And of course, 'Macavity' and 'Christmas Tree Farm'.
There's also the small possibility that she could potentially perform the songs she's featured on, maybe even with special guests: 'The Joker and the Queen', 'Two Is Better Than One', 'Renegade', 'Both of Us', 'Gasoline', 'Birch', 'Highway Don’t Care' and 'The Alcott'.
Will Taylor Swift add any Speak Now or debut tracks to the setlist?
After unveiling her setlist on opening night, fans couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that Taylor only included one Speak Now song ('Enchanted') and one song from her self-titled debut album ('Tim McGraw'). It then turned out that 'Tim McGraw' was also a surprise song – it wasn't in the actual setlist.
So far, Taylor has performed a big chunk of the songs from those two albums as surprise songs already, but only one has officially been added to the setlist.
On July 7th and 8th, Taylor played 'Long Live' after 'Enchanted' during the Speak Now section for the first time. The song was then added to the official setlist.
Sadly, there is still no segment on the tour that celebrates the bops on her debut album.

Every day is a fairytale on the Eras Tour .
Taylor Swift has embarked on her first tour since 2018 , the singer has added to fans' excitement by performing two surprise acoustic songs from her 10 studio albums at some point during each three-hour show.
"The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one," the singer and songwriter revealed to the audience at her first show of the tour.
Ticket-holders remain on the edge of their seats knowing no surprise song will be performed twice — unless Swift messes the song up during her performance — as she said while singing "Death by a Thousand Cuts" at an April 1 show — or if it's off Midnights . (So far, she's repeated "Clean," "Our Song," "Death by a Thousand Cuts" and "Snow on the Beach" twice while "Maroon" and "You're on Your Own, Kid" have been played three times.)

Music + concerts, music + concerts | all of the surprise songs taylor swift performed during the eras tour la tour dates.

For Southern California Swifties, the biggest event of the year is about to take place. The Eras Tour has officially made its way to Los Angeles.
Sofi Stadium will bring in hundreds of thousands of fans to Inglewood throughout the next week. Since the start of Swift’s tour on March 17 in Glendale Arizona, her set list has stayed consistent, with only a few song swaps here and there. However, one thing that fans can count on is that each night of the Eras Tour, Swift selects two songs from her catalog to perform acoustically, one on the guitar and one on the piano. With her six Los Angeles concerts come 12 new surprise songs.
It’s an intimate moment between Swift and her fans, with rare guest appearances, where she strips down a song to just the lyrics and the chords.
So far Swift has performed 93 different surprise songs throughout her U.S. dates. After promising fans that if she messes up a song and has to restart it, it’s fair game for her to perform as a surprise song at another venue, she performed “Clean” from 1989 for a second time.

Taylor Swift Unleashes '1989 (Taylor's Version)' Deluxe Edition Featuring Kendrick Lamar's 'Bad Blood' Verse

Taylor Swift delivered the ultimate surprise to her fans who have been eagerly awaiting 1989 (Taylor’s Version) .
Her take on her 2014 album arrived on Friday (October 27). However, Swifties noticed that one song was missing from the tracklist – her duet version of “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar .
Well… We now have an explanation! Taylor just unleashed a deluxe version of the album that includes her duet with Kendrick . She also opened up about working with the rapper again years later!
Head inside to listen to Taylor Swift’s new version of “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar…
Taylor hopped on Instagram Friday morning to share a photo with Kendrick , announcing 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Deluxe Edition .
“Watching @kendricklamar create and record his verses on the Bad Blood remix was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life,” she wrote. “I still look back on this collaboration with so much pride and gratitude, for the ways Kendrick elevated the song and the way he treats everyone around him. Every time the crowds on The Eras Tour would chant his line ‘you forgive, you forget, but you never let it… go!’, I smiled.”
She continued, adding, “The reality that Kendrick would go back in and re-record Bad Blood so that I could reclaim and own this work I’m so proud of is surreal and bewildering to me. I’m overjoyed to say that the Bad Blood Remix (featuring Kendrick Lamar ) is available everywhere on the 1989 Deluxe Edition. 🫶🩵”
Kendrick ‘s duet is the only new addition to the deluxe edition of the album!
If you missed it, Taylor seemingly shut down a major rumor about her sexuality on the prologue of her album. Fans have also attempted to determine who “Is It Over Now” is about .

Can ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ Turn a Non-Swiftie? We Put It to the Test
By Elisabeth Garber-Paul
Elisabeth Garber-Paul
There’s a moment early on in Taylor Swift Era’s Tour concert film before she launches into her nearly dozen studio albums, but after she points to parts of the crowd to see how loud they’ll scream, when she looks into the audience. “This is getting dangerous, it’s about to start going to my head,” she says, absorbing the energy around her. “It makes me feel so powerful.”
Editor’s picks
The 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, the biggest, messiest band breakups in music history, the 500 greatest songs of all time.
She starts with Lover , and from the jump, I think I get it. Pop hooks, catchy lyrics, over-the-top spectacle — what’s not to like? This year, I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen, Depeche Mode, and the Cure, twice. I appreciate a carefully crafted stadium show and try to turn my brain off as much as I can. I let the goosebumps take my arms and the tears well up, giving myself into the experience.
But soon enough, there are moments pulling me out. As she launches into “The Man,” I’m struck by the bluntness of the premise. Dressed in a sequined suit jacket and platform boots, she walks through a multi-story office of dancers typing away at late-century desks, singing about how she’d act if she could get away with all the things men can, like anger, sleeping around, and unapologetically taking what they want. I recognize the satire (and later, when I watched the video , the Leo-worshipping finance-bro type it was sending up), but in the moment, it feels reductive, almost discounting the fact that she is a powerful young woman ending a billion-dollar run of shows. But I dig a sequined suit, so I watch on.
'Gaylors’ Respond to '1989 (Taylor’s Version)' Intro Line About 'Sexualizing' Friendships
The sadness of 'slut' -- and more of our takeaways from taylor swift's new vault tracks, here's where swifties can buy every edition of '1989 (taylor's version)' online, from vinyl to cassette.
It’s shortly after that when I begin to understand Taylor Swift, the overdramatic storyteller. A long table appears, with two plates and a half-drank bottle of wine. A man takes the stage, sits down, and she starts to sing “Tolerate It.” Creeping along the table, she slowly comes to terms with the fact that she’s overperforming for a distant partner. “If it’s all in my head, tell me now” is too real. I feel grateful for my margarita.
It’s around this time I start to think about a beat-up VHS copy of Paul Simon’s Concert in the Park , a 1991 concert film that I watched so many times at my parent’s friend’s house that he finally just told me to take it home. I loved the songs, Simon’s showmanship, and the way he paraded his band around the stage, but I always wanted there to be more of a theatrical quality to it. And here was Taylor, making that dream come true.
But then it’s back to that ultra-girly fantasy premise. For Speak Now , she comes out in a full-on Disney princess gown (sequined, of course), and for Red, she dons black sequined hot pants and a top hat. “Feeling 22,” she sings. I have never felt older. Her spell is wearing off, so I distract myself by exchanging some flirty texts with a long-distance crush. “Is this it?” I wonder. “Do I give up and leave?”
And truly, I almost did. I found myself coming to terms with the idea that maybe it was OK if I didn’t get Taylor Swift. But something about her ten-minute acoustic rendition of “All Too Well” keeps me in my seat. Suddenly, that Honda zooming around Williamsburg seems like a million years ago. She’s standing in the middle of the stadium, in little more than a sequined minidress and platform boots, playing guitar, overthinking flashbacks of a relationship. A few minutes ago, she was singing about how she didn’t give a fuck about what anyone thought — the public, her exes — and here she is airing her heartbreak. It’s probably a metaphor, I realize, but lines like “you call me up again, just to break me like a promise / so casually cruel in the name of being honest” strips back the veneer a little. If the Man is allowed to be angry, Taylor is out here making it OK to be losing your shit a little.
As she goes into Folklore , her theater-kid sensibility is once again on full display. She speaks to the crowd about where she was when she wrote it, in the depths of the pandemic, and how she created this fantasy of being a Victorian woman in the woods to escape being a “lonely millennial woman covered in cat hair,” watching hours upon hours of television a day. She’s back in a fairytale forest fit, singing songs about teenage love triangles. It’s disjointed but appealing. I look around the theater, the (mostly) young crowd still singing along without missing a beat. High school must still be a vivid memory for them. And here is the most popular girl, singing about their heartache.
Matthew Perry, ‘Friends’ Star, Dead at 54
Twisted anti-vaxxers rush to blame matthew perry’s death on covid vaccine, matthew perry was the sarcastic soul of ‘friends’, the crypto whistleblower at the center of the sam bankman-fried storm.
She closes out the show, and as the theater lights come back on, I’m proud of myself for making it through until the very end, even if I’m still not sure I needed two hours and 45 minutes of Taylor Swift in my weekend. Over the credits, there are clips of gaffes from her concert run — getting a microphone stuck on a gown, getting drenched during her set in Massachusetts — that further strip away the sheen. I look around the theater, and most people are staying put, watching till the bitter end. That’s the thing about Taylor Swift: her fans don’t want to miss a thing, and with that, she’s created one of the most loyal followings in pop history.
On my way out, I think about the other pop stars who command devoted fandoms — Madonna, Britney, Lady Gaga. Swift is not the first to give women permission to be unapologetically themselves or to let her suggestive sexuality dominate album cycles. But as I watched her go through her many eras — not exactly in order, but expertly paced — I respect how she’s able to seamlessly weave between fantasy and reality, between the personas she puts on as a front and the ones that allow her to feel seen. It looks, to me, authentically like being a woman — coming of age, going through phases, pushing boundaries in life and relationships, having to toggle between facades to survive. Maybe her music’s not for me, and maybe it’s not meant to be. But I appreciate a mini skirt and platform boots, so I venture out into Midtown in search of some of my own.

Brace Yourself for Lots of Taylor Swifts and Travis Kelces This Halloween
Move over, Barbie and Ken, another couples costume has entered the zeitgeist in the fourth quarter.
- Share full article

By Callie Holtermann
Within 24 hours of Taylor Swift’s surprise appearance at a Kansas City football game in September , Ashlee Hartley and her husband, Charlie Tighe, began gathering materials for their Halloween costumes.
A red jacket. A blond wig. A bottle of blue Gatorade.
Ms. Hartley, 31, and Mr. Tighe, 35, who live in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., hand-painted a white jacket and jeans to resemble the denim set worn by Travis Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs who is rumored to be dating Ms. Swift.
Ms. Hartley expects Halloween parties to be packed with doppelgängers of the couple. “I think it would be so hilarious to see 10 Taylor Swifts and 10 Travis Kelces in a room,” she said.
At the height of Barbiemania this summer, it appeared that Barbie and Ken would be the dominant couples’ costume of Halloween. This week, SAG-AFTRA discouraged its members from dressing up as characters from major movie studios in solidarity with the continuing actors’ strike.
And now an October surprise may have arrived in the form of Ms. Swift and Mr. Kelce. Social media is dotted with couples posing in red No. 87 jerseys and sequined leotards more than a week before Halloween.
“Thank you, Travis and Taylor, for giving boring straight white couples a 2nd Halloween costume,” Lucas Johnson wrote on X , formerly Twitter. (Ms. Hartley said she thinks any couple could pull off the look.)
Small online retailers say that requests for the costumes — with delivery by Oct. 31 — are surging.
“I’m up until 3 or 4 in the morning every night, customizing bodysuits,” said Angela George, 40, who lives in Portland, Ore., and sells clothing on Etsy . Already this month, she said, she has sold more than 300 pieces inspired by Ms. Swift, several to customers who said they intended to wear them for couples’ Halloween costume contests.
Enthusiasm is not always so strong for couples’ costumes, which an article in The New York Daily News once proclaimed “ the worst part of Halloween .”
But Ms. Swift and Mr. Kelce have broad appeal, and convenient timing, working in their favor. The pairing represents a moment of alignment between two of the country’s “ biggest media entertainment entities ,” Nora Princiotti, a football writer for The Ringer, told The New York Times in an article earlier in October.
Many Swifties have leftover attire from dressing up to see the Eras Tour or its recent concert film , Ms. Hartley said. And reddish football jerseys are not exactly hard to come by. “It attracts sports people, it attracts non-sports people, it attracts Taylor Swift fans,” Ms. Hartley said.
Even Mr. Kelce has found the N.F.L.’s prime-time coverage of the couple to be a little bit overkill . But the pair’s exposure was a plus for Richelle Terry, 31, an elementary school teacher in Houston who was looking for a recognizable costume.
@areyoutwosisters Hey Swifties! 💋@Taylor Swift @Travis Kelce #tayvis #traylor #halloween #costumes #taylorswift #swifites #kelce #kelcebrothers #party ♬ ...Ready For It? - Taylor Swift
Each year she and her husband dress up as whichever celebrity couple “is the happening hashtag at that moment,” she said. Last year her husband, Chase Terry, 37, shaved his head to be the Travis Barker to her Kourtney Kardashian. This year, he grew a mustache to evoke a different Travis.
Halloween costumes have evolved from a standard stock of characters (witches, ghosts) to looks that reflect the zeitgeist. Costumes based on TV shows, comic books and movies took off in the second half of the 20th century, thanks in part to costume companies that licensed characters like Spider-Man and Snow White .
Some shoppers now want costumes that make references to social media trends from the weeks leading up to Halloween. And because such looks are less likely to be available at large retailers like Spirit Halloween and Party City, some smaller sellers have sensed an opportunity.
Stormy Kelly, 33, who lives in Miami, sells made-to-order costumes based on celebrities like Ms. Swift and Kylie Jenner through TikTok and Instagram. “I can see a paparazzi photo and have the sample made by the next morning,” she said. Her most intricate costumes can cost up to $2,000, but most sell for $200 to $300.
About half of her sales since the Eras Tour began in March have been inspired by Taylor Swift. “I’ve ditched the $50 bikinis I used to sell because these projects are so much more profitable,” she said.
When Kayla Highley, 29, who lives in Fishers, Ind., added a red jersey that says “Taylor’s Boyfriend” on the back to her Etsy shop in September, it quickly became her top-selling item. She said she had gotten about 15 inquiries in the past week asking if orders could be delivered before Halloween.
Ms. Swift and Mr. Kelce have also made appearances in Halloween décor. In one setup that was widely shared on TikTok , a skeleton wearing a Kelce jersey proposes to a skeleton in a blond wig. The scene takes place in the front yard of a house, where the skeletons are surrounded by gravestones with the names of Ms. Swift’s exes.
An earlier version of this article misstated where Ashlee Hartley and Charlie Tighe live. It is Saratoga Springs, not Sarasota Springs.
