Haunted House Craft - Easy Halloween Art Activity for Kids
This Haunted House Craft is the perfect last-minute easy Halloween art activity for kids! With only a few materials, kids can make a cool and spooky haunted scene.

This papercraft is great for all ages and is fun activity kids can do in the classroom, in homeschool, in art class, or just for fun on Halloween .
Plus, I've made it even easier for you with 4 FREE printable haunted house templates! Make sure you read the whole post for the free downloads.
Easy Halloween Art Activity for Kids
Try this fun silhouette art activity with your kids for Halloween. It's a great way to explore warm and cool colors, different textures, and various paint options.
All you need for this craft is a haunted house silhouette (free templated below), white card stock, scissors, and paint. Kids of all ages will love making their spooky haunted house scenes!
How to Make a Haunted House Paper Craft
- Gather your materials and cover your workspace with newspaper or plastic for protection.
- Provide your child with white card stock paper and paint. I love using Kwik Stix solid paint sticks! It's easy for even toddlers to use and the paint dries in about 90 seconds.
- Let your child choose 3 colors they like (great time to discuss cool & warm colors) and paint the entire white paper. Set aside to dry.
- While kids are painting, cut out the haunted house templates. Choose from 4 different houses below to print or feel free to make your own.
- Encourage your child to glue to tape the haunted house silhouette on their painted paper.
- Add fun elements by cutting ghost or bat shapes from black card stock paper.
- Hang up the spooky haunted house craft and enjoy!

Free Haunted House Silhouette Templates
To make this craft even easier for you, here are 4 FREE Haunted House templates to use! Choose PDF or PNG versions below. The PDF is great for printing and cutting out with scissors. The little windows on the houses may be hard to cut out but one tip is to use a yellow marker to color them in. This way it's still spooky and you don't need to cut tiny windows.
The PNG zip file contains the 4 haunted house images with transparent background. Perfect for using with a Cricut (I used mine) or Silhouette cutting machine if you have one.

Choose your FREE download below. For personal use only.
I love the finished craft! It's so fun and spooky for Halloween. My favorite part is really how customizable it is. Kids can use any colors and patterns they want for the background, the haunted house they choose and any extra elements.
I hope you love this idea and try it out with your kids! They are sure to love it and you will too. It's easy, low prep and a great art activity for all ages.

If you recreate this craft, share it on social media and tag me so I can see it! Find me on Facebook , Instagram , and Twitter .

Interactive Haunted House Art Lesson
Allow me to introduce you to one of my students’ favorite halloween/ fall themed lessons! This interactive haunted house project has been one of my tride and true lessons over the last 15 years as an art teacher, and my students never cease to amaze me with their creativity!
First, to create this haunted house (or fall house for any students who do not celebrate Halloween), students will need my Haunted House Drawing Guide that can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. This drawing guide easily breaks down how students can use line and shapes to create an old creaky and run-down haunted house. Students are able to follow along with this guide both in person or it’s perfect for remote learning! There were even several times last year that my Smartboard wasn’t working, so my students pulled up these guides from their ipads and followed along without missing a beat!

Once students have finished drawing their haunted house, they are able to add several signature creepy halloween characters to their houses (also provided in the guide)- but don’t add them all YET because the best part is yet to come!
After drawing, have your student trace their pencil lines in varying-sized Sharpies (fine for the larger shapes of the house and an ultra-fine Sharpie for the small details and textures around the house. Have students color their haunted houses in materials of their choice (I usually do crayon, construction paper crayons or colored pencils).
Once the Haunted Houses are colored in, using a Xacto blade, carefully cut open the window flaps or door to the house leaving one seem open and tape a small piece of paper behind the windows on the back. Have students add more funny/ creepy characters in the windows for added fun. I love giving my students the prompt of “What would be the weirdest/ silliest thing you would never expect to see in a haunted house?” A ghost singing in the shower? Dracula cooking garlic soup? You will be pleasantly shocked and in awe of the creative ideas your students come up with for this project!
If you decide to do this lesson with your students be sure to tag me on Instagram so I can see (@artwithmrs.e ). Have fun and Happy Halloween!

Halloween Art Lesson - Draw a Haunted House

This Halloween art lesson is inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Halloween Art Lesson Objective: Students become acquainted with Hundertwasser’s art and architecture, then create a Hundertwasser-inspired haunted house in the spirit of Halloween.
National Core Arts Standards Creating: #1, 2, 3 Presenting/Producing: #5 Responding: #7,9 Connecting: #11 http://www.nationalartsstandards.org/
Materials: Faber-Castell Oil Pastels or Faber-Castell Beeswax Crayons Pencil Brush Faber-Castell Black Watercolor paint Faber-Castell 9×12 Watercolor Paper
Grade Level: 4th – 6th grade Time Required: 2 45-min. class periods
“When we dream alone it is only a dream, but when many dream together, it is the beginning of a new reality.” —Hundertwasser 1928-2000
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, 1928-2000 was an Austrian artist and architect known for his imaginative expression with his use of bold colors, patterns, and organic shapes. Furthermore, as an architect, Hundertwasser disliked straight lines, opting to work outside the traditional rules of modern architecture, creating very decorative, dreamy and fanciful structures. This lesson is offered in the spirit of Halloween fun! Search Hundertwasser, and share both his paintings and architecture with students. In addition, have them design a haunted house incorporating their favorite motifs as Hunderwasser would have.

1. The first step of the art project is giving students a copy of a line drawing of a basic Victorian-style house for reference.

2. Then, transform house by demonstrating how to replace straight lines with curvy lines, and adding Hundertwasser motifs such as onion domes, hidden faces, tiny windows, and colorful spirals. Add Halloween images.

3. Next, color the sky with swirling lines in an analogous color scheme. Color the rest of the art carefully, by leaving thin channels of no color around shapes. Use white for ghosts and spider webs as they will appear once the artwork is painted. Furthermore, uncolored areas will later become black with paint.

4. Finally, paint a black watercolor wash over the art. Make even, downward strokes. As a result, the oil pastel/crayon will resist the paint and will bead up. Let it dry.

Lesson Objectives
The student will be able to…
learn about the roles and responsibilities of an architect.
use multiple resources to make a sketch and plan of a haunted house prior to the final drawing.
demonstrate creative decision-making by including several architectural details and “spooky” details to fill the space around the house.
Introductory Activity
Learn a few fun facts about Antoni Gaudi and take a look at his architecture. Students compare and contrast different architectural structures created by Gaudi. Lastly, students explore the roles and responsibilities of an architect.
Lesson Process
Preview “Art With Trista – Haunted House” art tutorial (see resources). Make a sketch (like a draft or blueprint) of your house and plan the architectural details and spooky additions you will add. Use the “Haunted House” handout to help with ideas and planning, but do not copy exactly – be creative! Begin on the final paper. Consider the environment and composition of the house on paper. Add line weight variety to larger building structures and items in the foreground. Use watercolor (wet on wet technique) to make an eerie sky. Use colored pencils to add color to the house and details. * More detailed steps available in a lesson plan on TPT.

Spooky Haunted House Art Project for Kids

I got the idea for this spooky haunted house picture from this picture I found online. For the background, we did a marker ink printing process using washable markers on plastic ziploc bags. I learned this technique from Lauralee Chambers who does it using tin foil. You simply color with washable markers on a plastic bag, spray with water and then press your paper on the bag and rub the back. I love the mysterious effect it has on these spooky pictures! The rest of the picture was done with construction paper cutouts.

Fun Haunted House Crafts for Halloween
- Facebook Messenger
Before you know it, October will be here. That means it’s time for pumpkins, candy, pumpkin spice, and haunted houses. But maybe your kids aren’t ready for the real haunted house yet. Don’t fret—these haunted house crafts are just as fun! Kids will have a blast making and playing with these haunted house crafts, and they make for wonderfully spooky party decor.
Making haunted house crafts encourages kids to use a variety of different art mediums in their projects. With some of the haunted houses, they’ll even learn a bit about building. STEM and art in a single activity? That’s a winner!

Paper Haunted House Crafts for Kids
Interactive Printable Haunted House from Artsy Momma : If you’re looking for an easy, engaging haunted house craft, we have one right here! We’ve provided a printable template for our interactive haunted house with lift-the-flap windows featuring some not-so-spooky characters inside. Our haunted house is made with simple shapes, so they’re easy for little hands to cut. Kids can either color in the pieces, or you can print the template on colored paper to make things even simpler.
Haunted House and Ghost Paper Weaving from Pink Stripey Socks : Work a little weaving into your Halloween festivities. This super simple paper weaving project is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Cut slits into the black paper house, and simply weave the ghosts into the slits. This craft can be done in just a few minutes, which is great when kids are wiggly from all that candy!
Haunted House with Movable Ghost from Our Kid Things : For this craft, you’ll draw your own haunted house using a Sharpie on colored cardstock. It’s easier than it sounds—wonky lines are okay, and symmetry doesn’t matter when it comes to a haunted house. Once your house is done with the two layers of cardstock, you’ll make a craft stick ghost to slide back and forth and up and down inside the house. Make that ghost boo-gie! Get it?
3D Spooky Paper Haunted House from Hello Wonderful : Learn how to fold paper into a haunted house shape, and then embellish it with the printable accessories, which include spooky doors, windows, and more.
Spooky Circuits Haunted House from Science Sparks : This haunted house is made with cardboard on a wooden frame. Colored cellophane covers the windows to give it a beautiful glowy look once the light is on. Set up your simple circuit with a switch, and your light-up haunted house is ready to go. Put it in the windowsill as a spooky display for the season.

Spook-tacular Haunted House Craft Ideas
Popsicle Stick Haunted House from The Best Ideas for Kids: What a terrific craft for a Halloween party for the kids! You can either let the kids assemble the houses themselves or assemble the houses beforehand and just let the kids paint and decorate them. Once you’re finished, add a magnet to the back to decorate the fridge. Alternatively, you could add an extra craft stick to the back at an angle (kind of like a photo frame) to display this upright on a table or mantle.
Paper Bag Haunted House from The Crafting Chicks: Here’s a super simple haunted house for little ones. The bottom of a paper bag makes the perfect rooftop, and the rest of the bag can be embellished with construction paper cutouts and stickers.
Water Bottle Haunted House Craft from Our Kid Things: Recycle a water bottle to make this fun craft with the kids. Wrap tissue paper and construction paper around the house, making windows and doors as you go. Of course, you’ll need some ghosts peeking out from behind the doors and windows to spook-ify it. Add a battery-powered tealight to turn this into a night light or glowing table decoration.
Cardboard Box Haunted House from Crafts by Ria: Turning a cardboard box into something imaginative is a classic way to craft with kids. Here, you’ll use a box and paper roll tubes to make a haunted castle. Kids can use their dolls and action figures inside the haunted castle, or you can use it to store candy for a Halloween party.
Haunted Houses Carton Craft from Sugar Spice and Glitter: Turn milk and juice cartons into haunted houses that kids can draw on over and over again thanks to the chalkboard paint. Once they’re painted with black chalkboard paint, it’s super simple to use chalkboard markers to draw the designs on. When you’re tired of that design, wipe it off to create a fresh, new design.
Birdhouse Haunted Houses from Kids Activities Blog: If you want a simple start on a haunted house, begin with a mini birdhouse. Then, it’s as simple as painting it black and adding a few extra touches, like spider webs or ghosts, to make it look haunted. You could make several of these and put them against a dark blue or orange backdrop to create a fun, spooky scene for a Halloween party.

Halloween Haunted House Art Projects
Haunted House with Pastel Smear Background from Craft Play Learn: The haunted house portion of this craft comes with a printable template, but the real fun is in creating the pastel smear backdrop for the house. Use shades of yellow and orange to create a huge shining moon, and then fill in the page with dark and light blues. Smear the colors together using your fingertips to smooth and soften. Kids will love creating their very own piece of Halloween art!
Oil Pastel Haunted House Craft from Simple Everyday Mom: Here’s another project to try using oil pastels, this time creating either a purple or orange backdrop for your printable haunted house. This spooky scene features bats, spiders, jack-o-lanterns, and a friendly ghost. For this project, kids can either use baby oil and a paintbrush to blend the oil pastels together or use their fingers.
3D Halloween Paper Craft from Little Bins for Little Hands: This 3D craft is a more free-form project. There’s no template; you simply use your eye to cut out shapes and build up the materials (paper and foam frames) until you achieve the 3D effect pictured. This is a terrific STEAM activity to try together as a family since the little ones will need help with the shapes. Tweens and teens will enjoy this project, too.
Shape Haunted House from Happy Toddler Playtime: Cut foam sheets into rectangles, squares, circles, and triangles, to let your little one assemble a house. Then, decorate that haunted house with foam Halloween stickers. This craft couldn’t be easier; preschoolers and kindergarteners will love seeing how simple shapes come together to make houses.

Be sure to pin this list of haunted house crafts so you’ll be ready for a spooktacular October!
