Scream 6 Ghostface Will Be 'Most Aggressive And Violent' Version Yet
"it just gets more and more gory.".

Scream 6 star Jenna Ortega has said that the next installment of the long-running horror franchise will see Ghostface return for a much more brutal round of terror.
Ortega, who is reprising her role as Tara Carpenter in the sixth Scream film, spoke of her love for the horror genre while chatting to Entertainment Tonight at a recent red-carpet event. She couldn't offer too many details about what's in store for the slasher-blockbuster franchise, other than to say that Ghostface will be more "aggressive and violent" than ever before.
"Ghostface gets a lot more intimidating," Ortega said of the sixth installment, which was announced in February after the incredible success of 2022's Scream . "I just read part of the script, and it just gets more and more gory. I think that this is probably the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we've ever seen, which I think will really be fun to shoot."
Production on Scream 6 is due to begin this summer, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing the movie from a script written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Vanderbilt is also serving as a producer alongside Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Kevin Williamson is executive producing with Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, and Chad Villella.
Ortega is returning to the franchise alongside Courtney Cox , who will be back on our screens as Gale Weathers, a character that she has played in every iteration of the film series so far. Hayden Panettiere will also be joining them to make her return as Kirby Reed, a fan-favorite character from Scream 4, who Ortega says is back to "redeem herself" in the next movie.
The Best 90s Horror Movies

Scream 6 is slated to arrive in theaters on March 31, 2023 , just over a year after the fifth installment unleashed more terror from the Ghostface killer. IGN praised 2022's Scream entry for managing to successfully carve out "a future for the franchise that some may not have thought possible with a tight story, great performances, and stellar new directions."

The Identity of Scream VI's Ghostface, Explained
Scream VI once again features a Ghostface killer on the loose. But just who is behind the mask of the murderous slasher this time?
The following contains spoilers for Scream VI , now playing in theaters.
With the release of Scream VI , audiences have once again gotten another round of slasher carnage featuring the mysterious killer Ghostface. But this killer has always had their identity shrouded in mystery with each film, only to be unmasked by the end of their killing sprees. The franchise's newest installment provides some new people to don the mask, but it also provides a rather shocking twist on the franchise's usual conventions.
With Scream VI , multiple people are once again donning the Ghostface identity . The real shocker, however, is that there are not simply two Ghostfaces running around to kill people this time. Instead, the film delivers a breathtaking four Ghostface killers to plague the Carpenter sisters and their friends in the Big Apple. The identity of the killers even provides a callback to a prior film's Ghostface killer.

The New Ghostfaces Are Family to a Prior Killer
As the Ghostface murders drag on, Sam and Tara Carpenter discover the newest Ghostface owns an abandoned theater filled with memorabilia dedicated to the past killers as a sort of shrine . The worship extends to the point masks of prior Ghostfaces are left behind at the scenes of murders as a taunting warning. When the sisters hatch a plot with former survivor Kirby Reed to draw out the suspect, they discover there are not one but three people involved with the new killings. These killers are police ally Detective Wayne Bailey and his two children, Ethan and Quinn.
As the killers unmask themselves, it becomes apparent Wayne Bailey masterminded the scheme with his children as his willing accomplices. The trio had been plotting to avenge the death of Richie Hirsch, one of the killers in the previous film and Wayne's eldest child. Not content with merely killing the sisters, Quinn spreads false rumors online about Sam to ensure her life will get ruined before the trio kills her. She and Ethan then become roommates with Tara and the sisters' close friend Chad, integrating themselves into their social circle to draw off suspicion. Bailey eventually uses his police connections to fake Quinn's death and draw suspicion off the trio before confronting the sisters in a final showdown.

Scream 6 Features the First Fake-Out Ghostface
In a franchise first, the Baileys are not the only Ghostfaces to feature in the film. Scream VI opens with Samara Weaving's Professor Crane being killed by a student, Jason Carvey, as revenge for giving him a poor grade. A horror aficionado and classmate of Tara, Jason and his roommate Greg were fans of Richie's murders and plotted to continue his work as their own "movie." The duo prepared to kill the Carpenter sisters in their own murder spree, but Jason finds Greg murdered before they can make their move. Jason is then killed by Ghostface, who chides him for his obsession with movies as his motive.
Scream VI provides a hefty amount of Ghostface killers throughout its runtime. Rather than be content with a duo or even a single killer as Scream 3 did, the film provides the franchise's first instance of a mastermind killer using twin accomplices to carry out a murder spree. Furthermore, the mastermind is the first police officer to become a killer, providing a legal workaround no other Ghostface killer had to their power. Finally, the film's fake-out killers show the franchise is now aware of how intensely speculative audiences are about the identities of the killers, proving it's not afraid to use even Ghostface as a potential victim. All these elements show that audiences will have to guess not just the identities of Ghostface going forward but their numbers as well.
To see the new Ghostfaces, Scream VI is now in theaters.

‘scream 7’: everything we know about the sequel so far.

Scream 7 is—as the title suggests—the seventh film in the Scream franchise and the third in Paramount’s “requel” trilogy. The previous two Scream movies have had an incredibly quick turnaround with little more than a year between the two: Scream (a.k.a. Scream 5 ) released in January 2022 and Scream 6 released in March 2023. However, with the WGA strike only recently resolved and the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing, when can we expect the next film in the franchise?
When will Scream 7 hit theaters?
Late 2024 is a likely release date for Scream 7 at this point as the film was not in production when the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes began, though if the AMPTP continues to stonewall, then the film will likely be pushed back to 2025.
Christopher Landon has reportedly taken over directing duties from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the duo also known as Radio Silence). Landon is best known for writing and directing horror comedies like the Happy Death Day movies and 2020’s Freaky .
Who’s in Scream 7 ?

Another major concern is which actors in the iconic cast will be returning for the seventh film. Courteney Cox is likely confirmed, as she plays fan-favorite character Gale Weathers and executive produces the Paramount Scream films. Melissa Barrera is likely to return as new Scream protagonist Sam Carpenter , daughter of Billy Loomis. Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding are also likely to return after barely surviving the previous two films.
The biggest questions are Neve Campbell and Jenna Ortega. Neve Campbell didn’t appear in Scream 6 due to the studio not wanting to pay her fairly for her contributions to the movie. With the SAG-AFTRA strike showing the many flaws in how studios treat actors , it’s entirely possible that Paramount will continue to refuse Campbell’s demands and make Scream (2022) her final film in the franchise.
Jenna Ortega has a different problem; because Scream 7 wasn’t in production when the strike started, Ortega’s schedule has reportedly been filled by other upcoming films and TV shows, including Beetlejuice 2 and Wednesday season 2 . If Ortega were to appear in the film, it may have to be pushed back to accommodate her schedule.
Ironically, these same scheduling conflicts were major roadblocks to Scream 3 ’s production and led to series writer Kevin Williamson dropping out of writing the film and Neve Campbell not being able to appear with the rest of the cast for most of the film.
What is Scream 7 about?

There are certain rules to creating the plot of a Scream movie, and the new series being a requel (that’s reboot and sequel) makes it especially likely that we will see certain plot points return. Given that Scream (2022) was a riff on Scream (1996), and Scream 6 was a riff on Scream 2 (1997), it’s likely that Scream 7 will continue this trend and have the plot reference Scream 3 .
Scream 3 sees Sidney Prescott having isolated herself from friends and family as a way of dealing with her trauma, only for the killer to draw her back out and reveal themselves to be a long-lost relative—in this case, her half-brother Roman Bridger.
The Scream requels have already explored the negative and positive aspects of family; Sam being the daughter of Billy Loomis has ruined her life in so many ways, but her relationship with her half-sister Tara is still strong.
If they want to have the killer be a secret family member, there are many routes the series could go. They could give Billy Loomis another secret child. They could give Stu Macher or another previous Ghostface killer a secret child. Or they could use the chance to introduce either Sam and Tara’s mother or (step)father as the killer. Sam mentioned in Scream 6 that neither sister was on speaking terms with their mother and that they hadn’t seen their father since he left in 2011.
Scream 3 also followed the cast of Stab 3 ( the movie within a movie that is based on the “real” Ghostface killings ) as they are systematically picked off one by one, with the killer supposedly targeting them in the order in which they die in the Stab script. Given how much Scream (2022) and Scream 6 have referenced the Stab movies, it would be fitting to bring it full circle and have the requel bring new life to the Stab franchise, just as the killers of 2022’s Scream wanted.

Scream 6 reveals major detail about Ghostface's damaged mask
Keeping it in the sick, twisted family.
Via Collider , the slasher movie's experiential exhibition confirms a theory floating around off the back of its trailer , that the cloaked killer is in fact wearing the raggedy costume of Billy Loomis.
Loomis ( played by Skeet Ulrich ), you'll remember, was the chief mastermind behind the original Scream killings all the way back in 1996, who met his end by the bullets of girlfriend Sidney Prescott.

But how do we know this for sure?
Well, the Scream 6 trailer sets up two major clues – the first being a sinister shrine to the many Ghostfaces that came before; the battered mask of the latest one clearly suggests that it belonged to a serial stabber, however, none of the mannequins on show are masked.
There's a shot in the trailer, though, where Melissa Barrera's Sam Carpenter (Billy's daughter) is holding this exact rubber face, and given the fact that it's encrusted with blood, this moment may be from near the end of the movie after another major spree. Maybe Sam decides that she's deserving of her late father's mask and takes it from the crime scene?
The aforementioned exhibition confirms it with its very own shrine recreation; one of the mannequins dons a well-worn mask, and is labelled 'Billy Loomis'.

Meanwhile, Tara Carpenter actress Jenna Ortega recently addressed how the sixth Scream will deal with legacy character Sidney's no-show , in light of performer Neve Campbell's dispute with the studio over pay , resulting in her turning down an appearance in the latest instalment.
Scream 6 will be out in UK cinemas on March 8 and two days later in the US. Scream is out now on 4K Ultra HD , Blu-ray and DVD , or to download and keep . US viewers can also stream the new movie on Paramount+ .

This film has all the amazing action set-pieces and wild stunts that audiences expect from the series, but now that the stories are more serialized, the stakes are even higher, and the characters are able to grow and change as they deal with the impossible odds they are constantly forced to face. Before Adam McKay became an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, he made arguably one of the funniest films of the 2000s with his directorial debut, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy . At this point, Anchorman has been quoted to death, and yes, this is a shaggy film that often feels like a bunch of sketches connected by a loose narrative. And yet, Anchorman remains hilarious, despite how much it has inundated our culture, largely thanks to the fantastic cast news team cast that includes Will Ferrell , Christina Applegate , Paul Rudd , Steve Carell , and David Koechner . This team together is absolutely brilliant, a collection of odd weirdos that might take their pants off during a news broadcast, or bring a grenade to your standard news team back-alley brawl. Anchorman is still absurdly strange and laugh-out-loud funny, no matter how many times you've seen these scenes or heard these lines. — Ross Bonaime

Though the Scream movies are happy to name-check famous slasher villains like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees, they will always stand apart from the slasher-franchise pantheon because of their murder-mystery structure. Ghostface isn’t a character or a near-supernatural entity: It’s a costume, ready to be doffed at the climax of each movie. Every Scream film ends by unveiling which character has been hunting and stabbing (or in the latest series installment, Scream VI , occasionally shotgun-blasting) the other characters, and presenting a media-savvy monologue about their motivations.
And since these horror movies are also meta breakdowns of horror movies, the scripts are always hyper-aware of how Scream movies are different from the films they’re sending up. There’s no sign that the filmmakers want to change that dynamic any more than they want to change the other tropes, habits, and touchstones these movies reference. Momentarily subverting them for a clever surprise? Yes. Changing the way the series does business? Not particularly. But there are a number of ways Scream VI might make the usual approach untenable in the future, and that’s an exciting prospect. Let’s get into spoiler territory and talk about why.
[ Ed. note: This post fully and completely spoils the ending of Scream VI .]
Is Neve Campbell back as Sidney in Scream VI ?
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24495616/scr604926k.jpg)
When Neve Campbell was unable to reach a deal with producers to return as heroine Sidney Prescott for Scream VI , some fans wondered whether maybe she did subsequently work something out for a small, surprising role that was being kept under wraps. Maybe Sidney would die in one of those iconic pre-credit scenes! Or maybe she’d turn out to be the killer this time!
But no, Campbell doesn’t make any sneaky cameos in Scream VI . Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), one of two legacy cast members who returns in this movie, reports that Sidney is taking her family to safety, far away from the New York City Ghostface murders, and won’t be joining the fray. “She deserves her happy ending,” Gale notes, with the series’ characteristic self-awareness. Given that Campbell felt she was being lowballed on her salary, this closure delivered by proxy feels a little disingenuous. But it’s also true: Once Sidney has been established as happily past her Woodsboro experiences, with her own family to care for, repeatedly dragging her back into a slasher series would feel pretty cruel.
Who dies in Scream VI ?
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24495622/scr605714r.jpg)
Actually, when you get down to it… hardly anyone! For all the movie’s talk of how franchises work, and how each entry in a movie series is obligated to top the previous one, Scream VI ’s creative team couldn’t bring themselves to meaningfully up the body count.
The movie certainly seems more intense than past Scream films during its corker of an opening scene, where Samara Weaving (star of one of the filmmakers’ previous projects, the hide-and-seek murder movie Ready or Not ) joins the parade of Drew Barrymore-style familiar faces killed at the outset. But in one of the most thrilling moments of the film, her murder isn’t immediately followed by the usual cut to the title card. Instead, the latest Ghostface takes off his mask, revealing another familiar face: Tony Revolori, familiar from Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel , and as Flash Thompson in the MCU/Sony Spider-Man movies .
Scream VI follows his character home, where he chats on the phone with his partner in Ghostfacing, discussing their plans to stalk and kill Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega), the recent New York transplants who survived the last round of Woodsboro carnage, in the 2022 Scream . He even already knows Tara from their film-studies class, which was taught by Weaving’s character. It’s as if we’ve joined Scream VI halfway through the movie, as seen from a different point of view. But it turns out it isn’t really his roommate and partner in crime on the other end of the line; it’s yet another new Ghostface, who dispatches both of the opening segment’s wannabe killers on his way toward stalking Sam and Tara himself.
After that twisty, unnerving opening, however, Scream VI isn’t quite so relentless. A few innocent bystanders are killed in a convenience-store scene, and a couple of disposable side characters are offed (or seem to be) early on. But while this movie’s Ghostface seems more brutal than ever — stabbing with greater speed and ferocity than his predecessors, picking up that shotgun when necessary — he doesn’t always finish the job. Gale, Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad (Mason Gooding), and Scream 4 survivor Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) are picked off one by one… except that they all wind up surviving multiple stab wounds, like Dewey (David Arquette) in all the movies leading up to the 2022 Scream . Scream VI still wants the kills, but it doesn’t want its characters to actually die and leave the series. At the end of the movie, the “core four,” as Chad insists on calling himself, Mindy, Tara, and Sam, remain very much intact. Apart from those poor bodega customers, the actual non-bad-guy body count once the opening sequence is over is pretty much just Mindy’s girlfriend Anika (Devyn Nekoda) and Sam’s suspicious-looking therapist (Henry Czerny from 1996’s Mission: Impossible ).
So who is Ghostface in Scream VI? And does it matter?
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24495624/scr604591rv1.jpg)
Effectively, the movie’s Ghostface is… everyone else. As Scream fans (and Scream characters) know by now, Ghostfacing is typically a two-person job. During Scream VI ’s tour of series memorabilia, it’s noted that only Roman, the killer director from Scream 3 , actually did the job on his own. Scream VI ups the ante with three Ghostfaces, which means that a hefty percentage of the newly added characters are actually the collective killer: Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), the cop initially working the new string of murders; his daughter Quinn (Liana Liberato), also Sam and Tara’s roommate, who appears to die at Ghostface’s hand earlier in the film; and Ethan (Jack Champion – Spider from Avatar: The Way of Water !), Chad’s nerdy roommate, who is secretly Wayne’s son.
They’re doing the Ghostface thing because Wayne’s other son is Ritchie (Jack Quaid), Sam’s psycho boyfriend from the previous movie. The family has taken up the legacy of Ritchie’s Stab (or really, Scream ) fandom. The museum-like collection of police-evidence mementos from previous installments belongs to Ritchie; the family is just trying to carry on his work for him.
In a film that’s sometimes light on actual meta-cinema commentary, at least for a Scream movie, there’s something provocatively eerie about a group of people moving a film series forward not because they particularly care about it, but because they feel an obligation to. (And in this case, a pretty demented one.) It highlights the way that sequels, especially those not made by the original creators, can start to feel like fanfiction — and in some cases, a new kind of unwilling fanfiction, created to meet the demand of audiences and studio executives, rather than to fulfill the fandom of the people actually charged with creating it.
But Scream VI doesn’t really dig into the idea of a joyless, obligatory revival, maybe because the movie itself isn’t joyless at all. These filmmakers seem perfectly pleased to be playing around in this world and establishing a new group of characters. At the same time, that enthusiasm may have backed this series into a corner, even as it enjoys some of its biggest box-office numbers ever.
What’s left for Ghostface in Scream VII ?
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24495630/scr602799r.jpg)
The survivable fake-out stabbings become absurd by the end of Scream VI. (Seriously, Mindy is repeatedly stabbed deep in the gut, and mere hours later, she has “insisted” on leaving the hospital to meet her friends, as if she’s being kept for observation.) But the cop-outs come from a good place: There’s nothing wrong with the fact that the filmmakers like Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad too much to let them die. The same was true in the earlier Scream movies: Not killing initial Scream survivors Sidney, Gale, or Dewey for a cheap shock felt like a sign of a slasher series that actually felt affection and respect for its leads.
If the Scream movies are murder mysteries at heart, threatening to knock off their central detectives just seems counterproductive. Even following Dewey’s this-just-got-real death in the 2022 Scream , Scream VI balks at taking down any of its stars. Though Gale has a “good” death scene here, perhaps the filmmakers sensed that it would be difficult to repeat the dramatic shock of Dewey actually dying. Though Gale’s scene was clearly shot so it would work either way, the movie appends a line about her pulling through.
This is all perfectly fine for the purposes of this particular movie. For the much-discussed franchise, however, it raises a lot of questions. Now that the likable “core four” have survived two movies and multiple fake-outs (hell, Tara is introduced with a fake-out; she’s the opening-scene victim who doesn’t actually die), it will be hard to kill any of them off in a way that doesn’t feel cheap.
One possible option Scream VI explores involves Sam: She’s the daughter of Billy Loomis, and still has visions of her dad (played by a digital avatar of Skeet Ulrich) urging her to choose violence whenever possible. There’s a tantalizing darkness in how much Sam relishes her opportunities to kill assailants, even if she technically acts in self-defense. And she does share a meaningful look at her dad’s old mask at the end of Scream VI , before appearing to reject that impulse and return to her friends. (There are shades of this idea in the recent Halloween Ends , as well, with the Michael Myers mask lingering in Laurie’s house after the man himself has been definitively pulverized.) Sam may continue to wrestle with her demons in a future sequel, but turning her into Ghostface feels both too obvious and too cavalier.
So, moving forward, the Scream movies have four new-ish lead characters and two or three legacy characters who wouldn’t feel quite right as either killer or victim. This doesn’t leave a lot of room for introducing new and credible suspects or slasher fodder, especially given that Ghostface usually reveals some kind of secret connection to past movies.
To some extent, this was always the case for Scream sequels. None of them are exactly pantheon-level mystery plots. Yet with production on these new installments outpacing the ability to track new horror trends, and their success being fueled in part by the fun of hanging out with these characters, Ghostface’s traditional reasons for being feel diminished. It’s hard to picture a mystery over Ghostface’s identity that doesn’t feel somewhat predictable or arbitrary, and on the basis of Scream VI , the series is running out of ideas about what kind of meta-motivations can fuel this shifting killer.
Both these problems are probably a natural byproduct of having characters who sometimes manage to feel like real people, or at least well-rounded movie people, rather than purely arch caricatures. It will be especially challenging to find a creative context for Scream VII if the very idea of the movies continues to blur into amorphous, streamable / snackable / shareable “content.” That’s another subject the new movie touches on briefly, but doesn’t fully pursue. The opening of Scream VI hints at a trickier, off-model, and scarier direction for Scream VII . The hall-of-souvenirs finale, meanwhile, hints at all the baggage the series will have to shed in order to move that way.

‘Scream 6’ May Owe Its Shocking Ghostface Reveal to ‘The Rise of Skywalker’
in Movies & TV

The brand-new official trailer for Scream VI (2023) left fans shocked when it premiered online last week . Not only does the film look gorier and more action-heavy than any of the five previous installments , it also promises a Ghostface killer unlike anything we’ve seen before.
“There’s never been one like me”, the new killer tells Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), before adding, “I’m something different .” Another scene shows a Ghostface “shrine”, which includes nine Ghostface costumes on mannequins, as well as nine more mannequins each dressed in the normal clothes those previous Ghostface killers died in.

But who is the new killer? Well, fans are theorizing that it could be Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard), one of the two Ghostfaces in Scream (1996), while others believe it could be Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), despite the fact Campbell exited the project last year over a salary dispute .
However, while we don’t really want to know who the new Ghostface killer is — isn’t that the whole point in these whodunit slasher movies ? — the new trailer definitely has us very intrigued, as does all the other promotional material Scream has unveiled in recent weeks.

Forgetting all those Scream crosswords puzzles and Christmas-themed posters of Times Square and Ghostface-shaped New York City Subway maps , though, and speaking specifically about the new trailer, it would seem that Scream VI could be taking inspiration Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
The ninth episode in the Skywalker Saga sees Rey (Daisy Ridley) learn that she’s the granddaughter of Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), the powerful Sith Lord thought dead for so long. During the third act, Palpatine desperately tries to seduce Rey to the dark side.
It wouldn’t be unusual for Scream to reference or pay homage to Star Wars in some way — Scream 3 (2000) features a cameo from Carrie Fisher (as a Carrie Fisher lookalike ), while one of the characters in Scream (2022) mentions Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens (2015) when discussing the idea of movie “requels” — another word for legacy sequels that are more or less reboots of the original film in the series.

Either way, we already know that new Scream final girl Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) is the illegitimate daughter of Ghostface killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), from whom she inherited psychotic tendencies, which will continue to be explored in the upcoming sequel, as teased in the new trailer, with Sam now in therapy because of “the darkness” inside her.
While it might sound like a bit of a reach, what if the new Ghostface killer is the father of Billy Loomis — in other words, Sam’s grandfather ? After all, Hank Loomis (CW Morgan) has lost everything — his son, and then his ex-wife Debby Loomis (Laurie Metcalf), who turned out to be one of the Ghostface killers in Scream 2 (1997), and even his lover Maureen Prescott/Rina Reynolds (Lynn McRee), Sidney’s mother.

There’s a scene towards the end of the trailer in which Sam says to a presumably unmasked Ghostface off screen, “You want me .” While CW Morgan isn’t confirmed anywhere in the casting, could Hank Loomis be trying to tempt Sam into joining him and continuing the Loomis family tradition?
“This isn’t like any other Ghostface”, says one of the characters in the trailer. Well, we may have already had a vengeful parent in Debbie Loomis, but we’re yet to have a killer who tries to lure the final girl into joining the “dark side”…

Screen Rant
Scream ghostface reveals ranked from least to most satisfying.
There have been 12 main Ghostfaces throughout the Scream franchise, and while some have been jaw-dropping, others have been underwhelming.
Every Scream film features a new Ghostface, with some keeping audiences coming back for more and others making fans wish that specific film had never been made. Scream premiered in 1996, cementing Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as the ultimate slasher film final girl. While Campbell didn't return for Scream 6 , Melissa Barrera filled in as Sam Carpenter, the new Scream protagonist, and she didn't disappoint. Alongside her sister Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), she was able to fight off the most Ghostfaces killers any Scream film has ever had. Scream VI had five Ghostfaces, with two getting killed off at the beginning of the film.
The Scream VI killers had a strong motive, which tied it back to Scream 2 . Scream 5 also shared many similarities with Scream , leading fans to believe a seventh installment may follow some of the plotlines from Scream 3 . The reason the filmmakers did this is the new films act as "requels" to the original films. In order to get this message across, they've mimicked some things from the original, like having Scream 5's Ghostface be the main character's boyfriend. Unfortunately, the choice of Ghostface isn't always satisfying, though sometimes the filmmakers really hit the nail on the head with the reveal.

6 Scream 3's Roman Bridger
Scream 3 is by far the most controversial in the franchise, as many didn't like it. In recent years some have seen it through a new perspective and come to really enjoy it. Though, it still stands true that the Ghostface reveal was one of the weakest. Scream is never one to play it safe and has broken all the rules when it comes to slasher films. However, when it comes to revealing the killer, there are rules the film needs to stick to in order to create a satisfying ending, and having Roman Bridger as the killer broke these rules in the worst way possible.
Ghostface needs to be someone fans have suspected throughout the film but isn't too obvious that they already know all the answers before the big reveal. It should also be someone with a strong motive who has a connection to the main character. In this case, it was still Sidney. Roman's motive was that he was Sidney's illegitimate brother, and he was after her because their mother abandoned him. He was resentful that Sidney had a better life than he did, so he wanted to kill her.
The problem is Sidney had no idea who he was, and the story of her mother was unknown until the final moments of the film. It seemingly came out of nowhere, and when Roman revealed the truth Sidney looked just as confused as the fans. Another thing that ruined the reveal is that Roman claimed he had been the mastermind behind the Scream and Scream 2 Ghostfaces. This created many plotholes and discredited the other Ghostfaces' motives. The Scream 3 reveal would have been better left on the drawing board.
5 Scream 2's Mrs. Loomis and Mickey Altieri
The Scream 2 Ghostface reveal was a step above Scream 3 but still pretty lackluster. Scream 2 took Sidney out of Woodsboro to Windsor College, where she thought she's escaped the murders in her hometown. Unfortunately, Ghostface followed her to University and went after her again. At first, it seemed like the Scream plot might be repeating itself as her boyfriend, Derek Feldman, seemed suspicious. However, when he became the final Ghostface victim, it was clear he was innocent. The real killers were Billy Loomis' mother, Nancy Loomis, and Sidney's classmate Mickey Altieri.
Mickey seemed like the obvious choice for a Ghostface killer because he was a film student and was preoccupied with the murders. His motive was also pretty weak because he was seeking fame. On the other hand, Nancy had a valid motive, as she wanted revenge on Sidney for killing her son and on Gale Weathers for exploiting her pain. However, Nancy disguised herself as Debbie Salt but isn't too present throughout the film. Fans love collecting hints throughout Scream about who Ghostface is, but because Nancy wasn't in too many scenes, it was hard to trace the killings back to her, especially because she was using a false identity.
4 Scream 5's Ritchie Kirsch and Amber Freeman
Scream 5 presented itself as a requel, so it's no surprise one of its killers mimicked the original Scream Ghostface. Just as Billy Loomis was the main character Sidney's boyfriend and was later revealed as a killer, Scream 5 's main character Sam was dating Richie Kirsch, who revealed himself as one of the killers at the end of Scream 5. Understandably, the filmmakers wanted to connect the requel to the original film, but unfortunately, it was a little too predictable.
There was a specific scene when Sam was at the hospital visiting Tara, who was attacked by Ghostface in the opening scene. Ghostface comes out of nowhere and attacks her while no one is around. It seemed apparent it was Richie since he was also at the hospital visiting Tara, and it would have been easy for him to sneak off, put on the costume, and go after Sam. Amber and Richie also had a pretty boring motive. They wanted to create their own film because Amber wasn't a fan of the Stab movie sequels.
3 Scream 6's Detective Bailey, Quinn Bailey, and Ethan Bailey
Scream 6 had more Ghostfaces than any other film in the franchise, making the ending one of the most exciting. The best part of the reveal was that Quinn Bailey was one of the killers because she had been presumed dead earlier in the film. Along with Billy and Roman, Quinn became one of three Scream characters to fake their deaths. The reveal was also great because Detective Bailey acted devastated that his daughter was killed, tricking the audience into believing he couldn't have been the killer either. There were many hints throughout the film that Detective Bailey was one of the killers, but none of them were too obvious.
Related: 6 Parallels Between Scream VI & Scream 2
Unfortunately, this was not the case with Ethan Bailey. Mindy Meeks-Martin was suspicious of him the whole time, and it was basically confirmed he was Ghostface because he disappeared every time the killer was on the loose. The motive was also a little dull as the Ghostfaces were after Sam because she killed Richie and never allowed him to finish his movie, so they wanted to finish it for him. Scream 6 followed in Scream 5 's footsteps of taking inspiration from the original sequel's reveal, which is fun for fans who love connecting all the films together.
2 Scream 4's Jill Roberts and Charlie Walker
Scream 4 isn't regarded as one of the best Scream films in the franchise, though one of its Ghostface reveals was the most unexpected of the films. Emma Roberts starred as Jill Roberts, Sidney's cousin, and at first, it seemed as if Sidney was passing the torch to the star as the next final girl of a new generation. However, Scream 4 flipped the script when Jill was revealed to be Ghostface. Her motive was she was sick of living in her cousin's shadow and wanted to become the new final girl, so she staged the murders, planning on being the sole survivor.
Unfortunately for her, Sidney took her down like she's taken down all the Ghostfaces that came after her. Charlie Walker was the second Ghostface, and his reveal and motive were less exciting. He seemed like an obvious choice because he was a Stab fanatic and didn't have much of his own motive, but he was acting as an accomplice to Jill, who he was secretly dating. Still, Charlie's less exciting motive didn't ruin the reveal because Jill's was so unpredictable.
1 Scream's Billy Loomis and Stu Macher
There's truly nothing like the original, which is why after six films, Billy and Stu Macher are still the most satisfying Ghostface killers. Part of this is due to them being the first killers in the franchise, meaning they had nothing to live up to, and the film didn't have to reinvent itself like it's expected to do these days. Billy had a strong motive tied to Sidney's mother tearing his family apart by having an affair with his father. Also, having the main character's boyfriend as the killer was the ultimate betrayal. Like other films, Scream hinted Billy was the killer.
He was even arrested after he dropped his phone, and Sidney believed he was the Ghostface making scary phone calls to her and their friends. However, he was let off the hook, making fans believe he couldn't have been the killer. Stu had no real motive other than thinking it would be fun to join his friend on a killing spree, and somehow that might be the sickest motive of all.
What also made it great is since it was the first film, no one expected there to be two killers. Other slasher films like Halloween and Prom Night stuck to just one villain, but Scream broke expectations by including more than one killer. The Scream franchise likely isn't ending any time soon, but it will be hard for any future Ghostfaces to compete with the game Billy and Stu set up 27 years ago.
