No one buy from these scam artists! I asked them why they were discontinuing THE ONLY Vape I can smoke in the world (the flavourless) and they said they weren't! I paid for discreet shipping only to have the random shipping service they chose to hold it hostage in Denver unless I pay $340 to receive it. contact JAMES and he basically Called me names and told me to either transfer them $250 and they would "cover the rest" or else I would forfeit my order and be subjected to criminal prosecution. Battery/Customer Service Issue

Emailed support regarding a faulty battery over a week ago. Never received follow up correspondence. Owned the device a little over one month and the port to charge the battery essentially fell into the battery's casing, leaving the unit unable to charge. Thank you for the paperweight. Awesome Clean Way to Inhale Herbs - Has Caught Fire

I love this device for the fact that I can inhale herbal vapors in a clean, efficient way and set the temperature to release different compounds. A couple times now, my herb has caught fire inside the device and released smoke which really burns your throat. It’s possible that the vaporizer needed to be cleaned or that I pulled too hard. Regardless it’s something you should know can happen, and it’s probably a good reason to keep your vape clean and make sure you’re taking slow, steady pulls.

many faults with the mv1

1- the ghost mv1 has a cool look. However, the finish can scratch very easily as compared to Storz and Bickel's Mighty or Crafty. 2- the fast charger was not included. no one should have to wait several hours or have to order it seperately. 3- the loading compartment is very figity and requires a lot of fiddling around. 4- the entire vape gets extremely hot 5- most importantly, it is way too heavy for a portable vaporizer. Very unpleased with your product.

I had contacted the ghost customer…

I had contacted the ghost customer service because I bought a strawberry banana ghost box 3500 puff and it lasted 3 days which should have lasted over a month because I only puffed a a couple a day. So when I contacted them they wanted to know my address and what exactly I bought and would ship me a new 1 after waiting and waiting I contacted again for a update they said nothing but sent me a small ghost max. The sad thing is they didn't say sorry or nothing it was like I was just a problem yet if they keep treating their customers like this they may no longer have a business in the future. After a few weeks and a learning curve the size of Mt Everest I can say one thing....no. Sorry it's big heavy everything smoked through it either taste like lighter fluid or hay seriously. When u want to use your medicine you want it as easy as possible this just adds unnecessary complications to an easy laid back experience. The company doesn't tell you about the hidden custom fees.. DHL Shipping is absolute BS and I will never use their shipping company again... had to pay an extra $53 in fees... the vape itself is amazing 10/10, hits like a truck ! I bought the Ghost Vape on your…official Ghost website.

I bought the Ghost Vape on your official American website only to be charged $50 in duty. But furthermore, I did a little more research after ordering and they were we much cheaper if I bought it from a 3rd party Canadian distributor. The device is also not working to my satisfaction with no real vapour effect until the 4th or 5th pull. I has assumed this would work on the 1st pull.

My Mv1 is a couple of weeks old and…

My Mv1 is a couple of weeks old and hauntingly efficient at separating dirty ole carcinogens from good ole vape and can get the best out of even the scruffiest herb, it never fails to impress me the way it leaves us all 'proper old school' stoned (We're in our 50s btw). My only issue is charging which takes about 10-12 hrs even after 1st charge conditioning as instructed by the instructions. Mine gets very hot even on 150° which after a few minutes usually results in the flashing red light of doom and having to let it cool down. I've tried differing the packing of the load in the crucible but nothing seems to make a difference. Typically it's behaved itself so far this eve as I write this. Loving it.

Solid product but needs improvements

Solid product. Works well but definitely could use some improvements. The mouth piece loosely sits in the vaporizer making it feel cheap. The dry herb containers are way to small and the air flow is only great if you really pull on it. Wouldn't recommend to a medical user the fuss and size of the dry herb containers ruins the whole experience.

Best customer service experience ever!

I purchased a MV1 and it was everything that you could ask for in a vape. Wonderful draw and design. After 2 months it had a software glitch that was most likely user error. Customer service was unable to resolve the issue online and immediately sent a replacement.Their warranty and customer service are top notch! I would especially like to commend their rep Virgil for everything he did in trying to first fix the issue and then getting a replacement sent in a speedy manner. He sets the bar high for great customer service.This company blows the competition away.

Disappointed

Honestly disappointed by the overall use of this product. After only one use, it just doesn't give me the clouds or effect that was shown in many of the review I watched. I recently moved to the ghost from Pax3, and was hoping for a better experience overall. Cloud production was minimal and the burn/taste was awful. It seems like the battery never charges, after using different power adapters and letting the device charge for over 24 hours, the device still wasn't fully charged. The charge lights have never filled up, they are always stuck at low battery or one full green bar showing low battery. Maybe my device is defective, either way I used the device, and I read the return policy. Just wish I didn't have a $300 paperweight sitting on my desk now.

Ghost mv1 battery

I purchased a new ghost mv1 in October of 2019 from a shop in collierville tn. The 1st problem is how long it takes for a full charge. Advice is don't be in a hurry. The reason I dont recommend the ghost mv1 is the battery USB completely fell off. I had to purchase a quick charger 60 bucks.paid 38 dollars for priority overnight shipping. And had to wait 4 days. Dont be an a Sucker. Find another product and supplier.

I have been using medical marijuana for several years now. My preferred method is eating cannibals but sometimes that is not practical. In these cases I vape. I have tried every top tier product from PAX and Gpen on. The Ghost MV1 is by for a superior product, And while it is large it delivers. Great product

The MV1 is a remarkable dry herb vaporizer. Took time to finagle with it but with some help from my friends I was able to figure out how to use it. The MV1 produces great flavor however, the charge time for the battery life is abominable and the fast charger should be included. So far I'm pretty happy with my MV1 but I wish there were more accessories like a waterpipe adapter.

Introducing The Ghost Vaporizer Pen From SOURCEvapes

For those looking for last minute stocking stuffer ideas with an interest in vaporizing, the team at SOURCEvapes has just released their first multi-functional vaporizer pen known as the Ghost . Their team was kind enough to send us a few units to review and even provided a few extras to give away to our social followers going into the New Year. So, here we are… yet again.

“The $99 price point is incredibly reasonable when you consider the fact that other multi-use portable vaporizers typically go for $200 or more.”

To give you some context, earlier this month I had the privilege of reviewing the first version of their SOURCE orb vaporizer pen. After a few weeks of use and collected opinions, the orb turned out to be a pretty good vaporizer for its price point.

That’s why, when SOURCEvapes let me know they had a new vaporizer that was “better for dry herbs” that was being sold for under $100, I was immediately excited to see what differences existed (if any) between their two pen offerings.

Similar to the orb , the Ghost vaporizer pen arrived at my doorstep in a small, light-weight box. Inside, I found a sleek anodized aluminum pen housing with black accents and a matching plastic mouthpiece covering. Now, if I purchased this pen to be my stealthy side-kick as I travel around town, I would be concerned that it may be too big and/or bulky for my liking. After all, with a one inch diameter and a length reaching more than six inches, one wonders if the pen could be sized down to be more compact and portable; especially for those seeking a pen that can fit in their pocket comfortably and discreetly.

That being said, the Ghost vaporizer is extremely durable and easy to use. Its hard aluminum finish and circular shape makes it better suited for hiking or throwing in your purse or handbag without any worry of it coming apart like some of the smaller vaporizers with three parts on the market. For the last couple of days, I have only used the Ghost vaporizer around the house. Because I didn’t have to store it in my pocket, its large size did not bother me in the least. I would lay it on my desk when working, my couch when watching television/movies, and then on my nightstand at night.

The Ghost by SOURCEvapes Vs. The Phantom by CloudV

Now, I know what you may be thinking… doesn’t this vaporizer look a lot like the Phantom pen vape from CloudV? Yes, it does. They are very similar. However, there are a three key differences that sets these two vaporizers apart. Let me explain.

First, as I mentioned earlier, the finish is much more light-weight and eye-catching than the Phantom vaporizer. However, the Phantom does feel much more durable and heavy-duty, so they each have their place depending on your preference.

Second, the Ghost vaporizer utilizes a USB charger in the base of the pen, whereas the CloudV Phantom pen requires the use of rechargeable batteries. Some may argue this makes your life easier, but I fail to see any reason to prefer one over the other.

Lastly, and probably one of the biggest differences between the Ghost and the Phantom, is that the Ghost has three different temperature settings: low, medium, and high. After clicking the button a few times, you’ll see if your Ghost vaporizer is charged and working when it is flashing blue. This blue light indicates the lowest temperature setting available. At this temperature, I didn’t notice much vapor if any. However, I did taste the terpenoids in each draw, which was a pleasant experience.

To increase the temperature, simply hold in the button until the LED light illuminates green (for medium), and again until it lights red (for the highest temperature setting). The lights will continue to blink as the Ghost pre-heats to your desired temperature. Simple, right?

How To Use The Ghost Vaporizer From SOURCEvapes

Using the Ghost vaporizer is an extremely easy task. First, you will need to fill the heating chamber. This is located under the mouthpiece, which pops off. Don’t worry about being fragile with the mouthpiece. Give it a yank and it should come off without too much trouble.

Next, begin packing your ground material into the chamber. If using dry herbs, be sure you take the time to pack it down lightly until a little more than half of the chamber is full. If you are using oils or concentrates, be sure to put in the little bowl attachment that is provided in the package. Finally, re-attach the black mouthpiece by clicking it back into place and click the button in the middle of the pen to start the heating process.

The entire process takes about 1-2 minutes to achieve maximum heat-up. When the light goes steady, you know it is good to start vaporizing. Give it a go by taking a couple of short draws through the mouthpiece. Experiment with different pull strengths and lengths till you find your sweet spot. It will vary depending on the material you are using, its moisture level, consistency, and more. I like to start with long, slower draws on the low temperature setting, and finish with short, faster inhales on the high temperature.

The Ghost: A Quality Multi-Functional Vaporizer For Under $100

Overall, I would consider the Ghost pen vaporizer to be a solid option for people in search of a versatile vaporizer to use with dry herb. The $99 price point is incredibly reasonable given its capability (multi-use vaporization technology), especially when you consider the fact that other portable vaporizers typically go for $200 or more. To me, the temperature settings the Ghost offers are just an added bonus at its current price tag.

Of course, there are some things that could be improved. For instance, I’d prefer if the Ghost was smaller, more light-weight, and had a shorter heat-up time. Who knows, maybe we will see these changes implemented in their next version as they receive more feedback from their customers. Only time will tell.

The Ghost Vape MV1 is a portable, on-demand vaporizer that uses a convection heating style for both herbs and concentrates . The MV1 device has an alien-like appearance with its odd shape and shiny metallic alloy exterior.

The entire vaporizer has an ergonomic shape though, and there are only two operating buttons, one on the front and the other on the back. The vaporizer has a removable ceramic crucible that you can switch out depending on your material. The Ghost Vape MV1 uses only preset heat settings, but it does have Bluetooth compatibility , which enables a user to apply precision temperature control.

A Quick Look at the Ghost Vapes MV1

No one has ever seen anything like the MV1. Its outer shape and appearance are unorthodox. The unit comes in five different color options, which are all excellent, especially the more brilliant nickel, black chrome or rose gold varieties that give the vaporizer even more of a futuristic sheen.

There is also an all black “stealth” version , which is not bad, but using the word “stealth” in the same sentence as the MV1 is a joke (more on that later). The basic MV1 has no screen or adjustment buttons or any control panel at all for that matter. It has an LED band, right under its main power button, or “mode” button as they like to call it, that shows battery life and of course, to which “mode” the device is set.

The MV1 Ghost has two modes, for herbs and concentrates , but more about that later. Also on the front is the removable oven/crucible that swings out with a sliding motion of the release button, on the right side of the chassis.

No matter the color option that you choose, the entire oven and latch apparatus comes in the same color. The oven/crucible is all ceramic, has a stainless steel lid and can hold around 0.12g of herb material, which does not mean that you have to load the chamber to capacity.

The efficiency of the heating system on the Ghost means that there is no need in filling up the canister to get excellent vapor production or quality, or so says Ghost Vapes. Since the MV1 is an “on-demand” vaporizer, it means the heating element is engaged only when you press the firing button on the back of the shell.

Up top, there is the heat sink that also hides the retracting and extendable mouthpiece. The sink also contains the vapor path, which on standard versions is zirconia. The standard mouthpiece is medical-grade borosilicate glass (all these parts are available on the website as well).

There are other parts related to the vapor path as well, which include the zirconia path or a Makrolon stem, which is high-quality plastic for use with many vapers. The heat sink will need some cleaning once in a while, as residue will collect on certain parts, which is why the Ghost comes with many cleaning implements.

Certain parts of the heat sink will need a long soak in iso like the vapor path, as well as the crucible, the lid, and the mouthpiece. The front-facing side of the vape is where you load the materials, as well as where you turn on and set the mode. The back portion is the battery section where the vape button is also located.

The entire, dual-cell section is removable (the release button is right under the front-facing “Mode” button) and also features a USB charging port with a LED light that has a soft-touch finish to it. Ghost Vapes also sells a fast charger that you can use to charge the cells outside of the MV1, which is faster than charging the cells in the battery pack.

What’s Inside the Box

The MV1 impresses even with its packaging. The vaporizer comes resting inside a flip-open, top-flap box that stays in place. The open part of the top-flap also has writing on it, and other decorative elements.

The accessories section sits under the central unit and includes:

• One Ghost Vape MV1 + battery pack
• One Micro USB charging cable
• One Quick Start User guide
• One spare crucible and lid (the unit comes with another crucible inside)
• One concentrates pad
• Three picks
• Three isopropyl alcohol wipes
• Three Q-tips

The accessories for the MV1 go far beyond what they include in the standard kit. The other available accessories are something that we’ll go over later on in the review.

Using the Ghost

The vaporizer having a very straightforward configuration (a screen, clearly-marked buttons) can be both a positive and a negative. Having everything spelled out for them is a benefit to new users, but it limits the design choices.

Going screen-less seems to be in fashion right now, as the Davinci IQ, as well as the PAX 3, have both eschewed screens in favor of either a LED array (the IQ) or what seems to be the norm now thanks to the PAX, a Bluetooth-enabled, smartphone app that lets users make adjustment via their phone.

The Ghost has opted for the latter, as it pairs with smartphones and a downloadable app that lets users set their temperature precisely. But even if you don’t have a smartphone, the unit still has a total of four, preset heat settings – three for herbs, and one for concentrates.

On the front-facing LED bar, users will know what they are vaping by seeing amber (herbs) or red (concentrate) lights. Three individual lights within the bar also show temperature levels: one light is the lowest, two is the mid-point, and three is the maximum.

These heat settings are broken down further when using the app. The three presets (high, medium, low) plus two “favorite” settings, which go beyond the preset temperature range and can reach a maximum 428F. The whole heat range runs from 284F to 428F.

Ghost Vapes cautions against using the herb settings for concentrates, and vice-versa, for the simple reason that concentrate vaporizes at a higher temperature than flowers, so using those settings for any dry herb may lead to combustion.

Loading and Temperature Settings

Before turning on, load the crucible with your preferred material, this way when you turn on the vaporizer, you’ll know which mode – herbs or concentrates – to select. After charging the battery, install the dual-cell pack into the device.

Turn it on the vape by pressing and holding the Mode button. The MV1 Ghost will switch on and display the current battery life. The unit comes pre-set to dry herb mode, but if you want to switch to concentrates, you need to change the style using the button.

After turning it on, it will then go into Sleep mode, and from here you can choose the appropriate preset for your material. Once you have selected the preset, click the Mode button three times to activate the Vape button.

If you are using concentrates, remember to insert the concentrates pad into the crucible before loading the material. When the chamber is loaded, the device is on, and the mode is set, you have to press the Vape button to vape.

You need to press and hold the Vape button, which will start the heating process. Vaporizer vibrates to let you know it’s ready to vape (mere seconds), but you still need to press the Vape button whenever you take a hit.

The convection heating style combined with the on-demand functioning of the vape eliminates the need for a heat-up time. Moreover, the Ghost MV1 does not over-vape the material in the crucible thanks to the on-demand heating.

A user can take as many or as little hits as they want, and then they can leave the material in the chamber without worrying about the material being wasted. The heat only gets applied if the user wants it, so the MV1 makes efficient use of material.

With so much innovative technology and design features built-into the MV1, the expectations were high on its ability to perform. Thankfully, the vape expectations were not only met but the quality of the vapor, as well as the device’s functioning and performance, were exceeded.

With a full crucible, vapor production is outstanding. The vapor, like with any device, needs a little time to get going. The first few draws may not be so voluminous, but by the third or the fourth, it comes pouring out. But, going for a third or fourth hit, after the first few draws won’t be necessary.

The convection-heating gets the most out of the material in a short amount of time. Since it is a convection heating style, it might be a good idea to stir around the material, after the first few draws.

Misleading claim that the crucible would get incredibly hot if you try to take it out post-session, although it feels warm, it does not burn or make it impossible to take the oven out and stir the bowl if you so desire.

On-demand heating, as opposed to session-heating, is rare in a lot of dry herb vapes. Most conduction, or hybrid devices (conduction and convection) work in session-mode, whereby a user sets their temperature, and then the unit powers up to reach that temperature to vape the material.

The device turns off automatically after a certain period (the MV1 does have an automatic shut-off time if you press the Vape button longer than 15 seconds), and then it has to heat up again. Also, only within that time frame, there is still material being heated, and vapor being wasted, even when the session ends.

The MV1 gives ultimate user-control over the length and quality of every vape; no material gets vaporized unless the user wants it to be vaped. There are only three preset temperatures for either herb or concentrates, and those options were more than enough to showcase all the great qualities about the MV1.

Using the MV1 App

The Ghost MV1 does feature a Bluetooth connection that can pair with your phone, once you’ve downloaded the MV1 app. The app allows for precision temperature control within the four presets, as well as adding two “favorite” settings for vapers to set their ideal heat level.

The app also has other non-vaping related features like employing a locking feature, so that no one can use the device other than you when it is locked. In addition, the app can also find your vape, if you ever lose or misplace it.

The app also has a “Refer a Friend” program where vapers can recommend buying the device to a friend, which gives them a $25 discount, and if they do buy it, you get a payout of $25 too. Ghost Vapes says that more features will be added to the app in the future, but for now, those are the basic features of using the app.

The Competitors: The Ghost Vape MV1 vs. the Davinci IQ vs. the Firefly 2

The Davinci IQ is a dry-herb only vaporizer that has a bottom-loading, all-ceramic zirconia oven, and an all-ceramic zirconia vapor path (which is removable).

The IQ comes pre-loaded with four Smart Path temperature presets, although it does have Bluetooth compatibility and a downloadable app for precision control. The IQ is about 3.54 inches tall, and also takes a removable 3500mAh battery as its primary power source.

The Firefly 2

The Firefly 2 vapes both flower material and waxy concentrates and is also a convection-style, on-demand vaporizer. It has a magnesium alloy build and is much lighter and portable than the previous version of the Firefly.

The material chamber on the Firefly 2 is all-borosilicate glass, and the vapor path is also all-glass. The unit uses two touch sensors to start heating, and the device comes preset with six heat settings. It can also connect to smartphones through a Bluetooth connection for added customization.

Final Thoughts on the Ghost Vape MV1

The Ghost Vape MV1 is worthy of its alpha-numeric name as it evokes, and looks, like a killer robot, run amok that is currently in stasis mode but is just waiting to pounce. Although it looks cool on the outside, there is something about the MV1 that feels over-designed.

The MV1 looks like it needs an advanced degree in robotics to operate. It takes, like, three different button presses to turn on the device, but when you turn it on, you still have to turn it on again, by holding the button, and THEN pressing another three times to choose the right setting, but then you have to press the back button actually to vape, and on and on and on. Yeesh.

Then there is the device itself that has so many removable parts — and one rule about herb vaporizers: the more pieces you can take off, the more parts you have to clean, so more work:

• The heat sink comes off, which also breaks down into four separate pieces (gasket, lid, vapor path, mouthpiece)
• The crucible is also removable and needs regular cleaning, as well as the stainless steel lid
• The inside section of the device also needs some gentle cleansing, as the airflow pushes the reclaim and the residue to other hard-to-reach places

And the thing is massive. The battery pack weighs a ton, and it is nowhere near portable, at least not like the IQ, PAX or Firefly 2 are portable. It seems that Ghost Vape tried to have the best of both worlds, as they tried to meld a powerful, dual-material, convection-style vaporizer, with the portability and ease-of-use of a herb vape pen.

Not only that but they also made all these accessories (some essential, others not so much) for the device that are not included in the standard kit like the Fast Charger, since charging the device via USB cable takes super-long.

Some of the accessories worth getting are the Fast Charger, as well as the Crucible Dispenser, which comes with five empty ceramic containers that you can pre-load and pop in when your other one is done. As for vapor production, it is not bad.

The mouthpiece is retractable and can hide within the heat sink, which keeps the vapor very cool, even at the highest temperature. The on-demand heating style is efficient, and with the 0.12g capacity crucible, you can put dry flowers to get the most out of your material.

Granted, the vapor quality (cool, smooth, and flavorful) of the MV1 would not be possible without the technology inside, as it is now, but it seems like this tech could have been put into a better package.

I was super excited to get my Ghost MV1 that i bought from their website but it only lasted 2 charges. The batteries are very old and needed to be charged for 4 hours for 1 hour of use. My batteries died on 2nd charge. if you want to use it on a daily basis you must buy the quick charger that is another $60+ and very hard to find. The Ghost MV1 website doesn’t sell the quick charger or batteries. No one apparently has batteries for sale. So i had to hunt down accessories all over the internet and now I have to try to return all the stuff I bought for a vaporizer that doesn’t even work. I currently cannot walk and was hoping for a smooth experience, now this is going to become a big ordeal. Save your time and spend the exact amount of money or less and buy a Mighty or save $ with Crafty+. If i can even get my money back from all the crap, thats what i am going to do. WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE.

A Step by Step Guide

Ghost vaping is known to be one of the easiest ways to trick inhale and something a new vaper could do if they want to give vape trickery a try. Here are a few simple steps to follow for perfecting the trick.

Step 1: Inhaling

Whether you have ever been a vapor or smoker, many will automatically attempt to take a mouth hit straight into their lungs. It is the natural way to breathe and how people have been smoking for years. 

However, when performing a ghost inhale, you don’t let the vapor enter your lungs. 

This is going to be a struggle for a lot of people and will take some practice to get the trick right. 

Step 2: Briefly Hold the Vaper in Your Mouth

Normally, you would release the smoke from your mouth through a softer push as soon as you exhale. However, for this trick, the mouth hit needs to sit in your mouth for a few moments.

Allowing the vapor to pool inside your mouth will help contain it into a “ball-like” shape and avoid creating a thinner cloud.

Step 3: Exhale

The next step of the trick is exhaling and the shape of one’s mouth plays a big part. Instead of a quick, steady exhale through a tight “O” shape, you make a medium opening with your lips for releasing the puffy “O” shape smoke ring.

Rather than blowing the smoke out of your mouth, you must exhale slowly, allowing the vape to seep out of your mouth with the help of your tongue in a softer push.

As you slowly exhale with a steady forward movement, the vapor is expelled from your mouth. 

It will come out in a thick, solid-looking cloud, resembling a ghost, and should linger right in front of your mouth as a result of using a softer push. 

The solid-looking cloud is the coolest part of the trick and will impress your friends and awe those you’re performing for.

Step 4. Inhale

The inhaling technique associated with ghost vaping trickery may look impressive and you may want to keep the “host” formation present for a while. 

However, letting the vapor sit in the air too long causes it to dissipate and the trick will be ruined.

As soon as the “host” appears you will want to pull it right back in. This trick requires the same “O” shape formation with your lips and a slower inhale.

The 6 biggest Juul revelations from Netflix’s docuseries “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul”

When Juul was first conceived, it was set on being a new kind of electronic cigarette (or e-cigarette) that would help adult smokers finally quit a longstanding habit. Juul was meant to be a leading tech company. But years later, it became much more sinister than it could’ve imagined.

The e-cigarette company was founded by Adam Bowen and James Monsees, two ex-cigarette smokers who met while they were graduate students in product-design at Stanford University. Bowen and Monsees were determined to create a sleek e-cigarette that wasn’t anything like its goofy-looking predecessors. They first developed an e-cigarette called Ploom and later, developed Pax vaporizers for cannabis and loose-leaf tobacco. Juul was created in 2015 and quickly became one of the fastest-growing companies in the world .

Today, Juul is long past its glory days and instead, marred by infamy . The product, which was created for a good cause, ultimately became a public health crisis after it got in the hands of countless children and teens nationwide. Once disaster struck, the company struggled to redeem itself in the public eye.

Juul’s epic rise and subsequent downfall is explored in Netflix’s latest docuseries “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul.” Over the course of four episodes, the documentary explores Juul's early mission, its financial success and its ardent backlash through a series of interviews and old footage. Current and former employees of the company make several appearances throughout the feature. A few even chose to remain unnamed and anonymous for their own safety. As for Bowen and Monsees, they both agreed to not be featured in the documentary.

“At its height, Juul employed over 4,000 people, and was valued at nearly 40 billion dollars,” the documentary said in its opening. “Today, it’s worth less than 5% of that value.”

In the summer of 2013, Bowen brought on a chemist named Chenyue Xing to figure out how to make the nicotine delivery of Juul equal to that of an actual cigarette. Many Juul users complained that they were still smoking cigarettes because of Juul's low and impotent nicotine levels.  

Earlier generations of e-cigarettes used freebase nicotine, a form of the drug which can be incredibly difficult to inhale. Freebase nicotine was also difficult to raise in content because too much of it in an e-cigarette would produce an unpleasant, bitter taste. To combat that issue, Bowen and Xing decided to make salt nicotine — a combination of nicotine and a weak organic acid. Salt nicotine produced a “softer,” less harsh taste while still providing an adequate hit to its users. 

When it came to product testing, Jamie Ducharme, the author of the “Big Vape” series, said Bowen and Xing recruited their own co-workers to test the Juul products.

“It was called ‘buzz testing,’ because it’s a commonly-used term by smokers to describe the nicotine head hit that they feel,” Xing, who declined to appear in front of the camera, said.

An unnamed, anonymous engineer for Ploom described the test as “simple”: testers were asked to take 10 puffs in two minutes and describe how they felt.

“Around the fourth or fifth puff, I would have to start tallying because I’d hit the buzz so hard I’d be like, ‘Where am I?’ Then I’d come back and be like, ‘I’m done with number six,’” they said.

“The potency, I had never really felt anything like that before since high school, when I tried my first cigarette. Like a punch in the face, ‘Whoa!’ It really opened our minds to what was possible.”

A supply chain engineer, who remained unnamed and anonymous in the documentary, said Juul pods were a major problem — out of 100 Juuls produced, only eight contained effective pods.

David Pierce, a reporter for Wired, said many users got “a squirt of nicotine” in their mouth when they would inhale a Juul with a faulty pod. 

“One employee said he got crème brûlée liquid [a popular Juul pod flavor before it was banned] in his mouth so often that he now can’t eat [actual] crème brûlée because it was so disgusting,” said Ducharme.

Juul's sleek and slim design posed a technical challenge. It was difficult to fit in a battery, tubes and a small enough pod that was also functional.

“People would say, ‘We need a bigger unit,’” recalled Juul's supply chain engineer. “James [Monsees] refused to budge on the unit size. He really liked the way that unit looked.” Another Juul employee said they were rushed: “About a month before the original launch date, we didn’t have a way to fill pods yet.” 

Monsees was adamant that the problems be fixed in that short amount of time. And if they weren’t, Juul would still be launched regardless.

“Ever heard the old adage, ‘When in doubt, ship it?” Monsees is heard saying in an old recording. “There’s a variation on that one, which is ‘F**k it, ship it.’”

Juul quickly became known as a tobacco-adjacent company thanks to its gaudy marketing. What once began as a business seeking to help adults quit smoking actually encouraged more users — namely adolescents — to pick up the habit.

Juul's marketing campaign recruited so-called “cool kids,” who were average yet incredibly good looking millennials, posing and dancing while taking puffs from their e-cigarettes. The resulting advertisements were sophisticated, flashy and alluring, which made the product seem like a sort of toy or lifestyle accessory rather than a beneficial health device. Many were quick to notice that Juul ads greatly resembled those of Big Tobacco companies.

“Juul, in its advertising, faithfully followed the playbook of Big Tobacco companies and their cigarette brands,” explained Dr. Robert Jackler, a tobacco marketing expert at Stanford. “[Juul's] Vaporized campaign. It has direct roots from the way the tobacco industry marketed to youth. Take a bunch of 20-somethings, and you have them dance around."

Jackler added that Juul took the “very worst” elements of tobacco marketing and thrived on that.

“Cigarette makers could no longer advertise on television. Juul could. Cigarette makers could no longer have a billboard on Times Square. Juul could,” said Dr. Robert Proctor, a tobacco historian at Stanford.

Shortly after Juul's Vaporized campaign came out, Ad Age magazine published an article that formally called out the company's advertisements for looking very similar to old Big Tobacco ads. Juul's marketing team, led by chief marketing officer Richard Mumby, went into hyperdrive and began redoing aspects of the campaign, even though it had just been released.

Many employees said Juul had become a hot mess at that point and pointed fingers at the company's creative leadership, who they claimed had "no knowledge of what was responsible marketing of a tobacco company."

Juul's inconspicuous design allowed many young people to discreetly use the product in schools. Many kids tucked their Juul inside their sweatshirt, occasionally taking puffs and exhaling into their sleeves without their teachers knowing. Users as young as 12 and 13 years old were also seen using and passing Juuls around in public, like they were candy.

Juul's social media team began doing damage control to sway away from the negative publicity and encourage more adults to use the product responsibly. The company’s social media posts abandoned the Vaporized campaign and instead, displayed images of older folks carrying Juuls. The company's social media team also limited the use of bright colors and ultimately, made its account “stodgy and boring.”

Two students recalled the time their school hosted a mental health seminar and invited a mental health speaker to come and talk to them about addiction and drug usage. The so-called “mental health speaker” turned out to be a representative for Juul, who advocated for the product rather than against the consequences of smoking or vaping.

“Throughout the presentation, there were slides up in which the speaker was discussing how the Juul was not harmful and how it was 99.9% safer than combustible cigarettes,” said Caleb Mintz. “That’s an actual statistic that was used in the presentation.”

“He also pulled a Juul out of his pocket and referred to it as the iPhone of vapes. So he really came off as a salesman.”   

Phillip Fuhrman, a teen vaper who began vaping between eighth and ninth grade, said he was convinced that vapes weren’t harmful and didn’t feel compelled to quit after the presentation. Mintz, however, had different thoughts: “After the presentation, I didn’t find that many people shared the sentiment that I had, that this guy was trying to market nicotine products to a bunch of teenagers. It was so absurd, I didn’t feel like a lot of people would believe me, and I felt like the only person who would listen would be my mom.”

Per the documentary, the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected Juul's premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs) and ordered the company to pull all of its vaping products off the market. Juul, however, successfully appealed the ban and “remained on the market, pending another PMTA review.”

“At the end of 2023, Juul has paid nearly $3 billion in legal settlements across the United States,” the documentary continued. “The future of the company remains uncertain.”
