Biography [ ]
Escaping from hell [ ].
The Spirit of Vengeance was trapped in the Dark Dimension , within a region known as Hell, but he managed to escape and reached the Earth Plane , making a vow that he would never go back to his former prison. [3] The Spirit eventually bonded with Johnny Blaze , turning him into Ghost Rider. [2]
Resurrecting Robbie Reyes [ ]

Johnny Blaze passes Spirit to Robbie Reyes
One night in Los Angeles , Robbie Reyes and his brother Gabe were attacked, their car crashed and Robbie was sent flying through the windshield and hit the ground to his death. But a voice called out to him through the darkness. It asked if he would truly do anything to save his brother and punish the men who attacked them; Robbie said yes. Johnny Blaze arrived at the scene on his Hell Cycle , pulled Gabe from the car, and resurrected Robbie, transferring the Spirit of Vengeance into him, so he could fulfill his deal and punish the souls that did him wrong. [2]
Another Deal To Make [ ]
Several years after they bonded, Robbie Reyes was involved in an incident that made Reyes' body out of phase with the Earth realm, along with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz . Knowing that Reyes could not stay trapped between dimensions forever and that he would be pulled into Hell sooner or later, the Spirit left Reyes' body and bonded with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Alphonso Mackenzie .

Spirit talks to Robbie Reyes face to face
Now in control of Mackenzie's body, the Spirit began searching for members of the crime gang called the Chinatown Crew . However, Reyes caught up with the Spirit, telling him to leave Mackenzie's body because the two of them still had unfinished business. The Spirit replied that he had already done what Reyes wanted, soaking his neighborhood in the blood of the guilty ones. Reyes told him that he still had to stop his uncle Eli Morrow to which the Spirit replied that he would meet him too. When Reyes tried to reason with him, telling him that Mackenzie was a good man, the Spirit said that Mackenzie was a man who had lost hope, and that he could feed on Mackenzie's pain for years. When Reyes fell in pain on the floor, the Spirit told him that he knew where he was being dragged into, because he has escaped that place before and would not go back.
As former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Daisy Johnson appeared on the scene, the Spirit transformed Mackenzie's body into his Ghost Rider form and faced the intruder. Invisible to Johnson, Reyes stepped in front of the Spirit and finally asked him to make another deal with him - if the Spirit helped him to take down Morrow, he would help him to settle down his own old scores. The Spirit accepted and left Mackenzie's body, once again bonding with Reyes. At the same time they both vanished, leaving Mackenzie and Johnson alone. [3]
Stopping Aida [ ]

Ghost Rider brutally burning Aida alive
The Spirit and Reyes worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to take down Aida once they returned from the Dark Dimension . Phil Coulson made a deal with the Spirit which temporarily granted him its demonic power, which he used to successfully destroy Aida by incinerating her to ashes. The Spirit returned to Reyes shortly afterwards. [4] However, Coulson's possession caused the cancellation of the GH.325 's effects which had kept Coulson alive since his resurrection , dooming him. On February 9, 2007, Marvel producer Avi Arad announced the development of Ghost Rider 2 at a press event. Peter Fonda had also expressed a desire to return as Mephistopheles. In early December 2007, Nicolas Cage also expressed interest to return in the lead role as Ghost Rider. Shortly after, in another interview he went on further to mention that he would enjoy seeing a darker story, adding, "He's not eating jelly beans anymore; he's getting drunk." He suggested that the film could do with newly created villains. It was also rumored that the sequel would feature Danny Ketch, another Marvel character who took up the Ghost Rider mantle in the comics.
In a September 2008 interview, Cage informed IGN that Columbia had taken meetings to start a sequel. Cage noted conversations about the story, where Ghost Rider may end up in Europe on behalf of the church, having story elements "very much in the zeitgeist, like Da Vinci Code ."
In February 2009, an online source stated Columbia Pictures had greenlit a sequel to Ghost Rider . Nicolas Cage was slated to reprise the lead role, whilst the studio was in search of writers.
On September 23, 2009, it was reported that screenwriter David S. Goyer had signed on to write the script for the sequel.
Goyer spoke to MTV about the sequel, stating that the story would pick up eight years after the events of the first film and that he hopes to start filming by 2010.
The sequel is finally titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and was produced by Mike De Luca, and pre-screened with a PG-13 rating.
On July 14, 2010, it was confirmed that Nicolas Cage would return, and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were announced to direct the film, with editor Brian Berdan and cinematographer Brandon Trost reuniting with the directors from the Crank films.
Christopher Lambert underwent three months of sword training just as he did in Highlander (1986), and he has shaved his head for his role as the Monk Methodius.
Filming [ ]
In July 2010, Cage revealed shooting was to start in November. In an interview with Superhero Hype!, Eva Mendes revealed that she would not be back as Roxanne for the sequel. The film was shot in Romania and Turkey. The film started principal photography in Sibiu, Romania in November 2010, using mostly local talent. Principal photography was completed on January 24, 2011. On March 16, 2011, it was confirmed that Johnny Whitworth would be playing the antagonist, which was also confirmed to be Blackout. Later, the film was converted in post-production to 3D release.
Three scenes were shot on set Castel Film Romania. Among the places in the country chosen were Transfăgărăşan, Targu-Jiu, Hunedoara Castle and Bucharest.
Filming in Turkey took place in Cappadocia, a historical region in central Turkey with exotic chimney topped rocky setting. The scene with the Greco-Roman theatre was filmed in Pamukkale where the ancient Greek (of the Seleucid Empire) city of Hierapolis once stood.
Reception [ ]
Reviewers who viewed an early preview screening at the December 2011 Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Austin expressed negative reactions to the film, with two attendants saying it was worse than the first Ghost Rider film, and one even going so far as to say that the sequel makes the first film "look like The Dark Knight " by comparison.
On Rotten Tomatoes the film holds a 18% rating based on 132 reviews with the consensus stating: "With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nicolas Cage performance so predictably loony it's no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash." [1] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 32 based on 20 reviews. [2] IGN gave the movie four out of five stars. [3]
Box Office [ ]
Despite its negative reviews, it opened in 3,174 theaters at #3 with $22,115,334, behind Safe House , which moved to #1 on its second weekend and The Vow the holdover of the last week, less than half of the first Ghost Rider' s opening weekend of $45,388,836. As of June 4, it has gone on to gross $51,774,002 at the domestic box office and $80,789,928 overseas for a worldwide total of $132,563,930, that's why it became a box office bomb.
Canceled Future [ ]
On February 2012, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor discussed producing a potential Ghost Rider 3 and having someone else direct it. Neveldine told The Playlist that Nicolas Cage has expressed interest in appearing in another Ghost Rider film, hinting that the film could move forward provided that Spirit of Vengeance was a success saying "I know Nic wants to do it, he's very pumped about it.....We'll just have to see how well [this] does."
In March 2013, when Nicolas Cage was asked about a possible third installment, Cage said "It's possible, but it won't be with me... Anything's possible. But I doubt, highly, that I would be in the third installment of that."
According to MTV, Cage believes that another Ghost Rider film might happen "down the road" saying "It would be interesting if they did it with a female Ghost Rider," but he insisted that his days as Johnny Blaze are behind him for now. Cage also said "Personally, I'm done," he said. "I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done."
On May 2, 2013, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that the film rights to Ghost Rider had reverted to Marvel Studios, though also stated that the studio had no immediate plans to make another Ghost Rider film.
On July 2016, it was announced that the new iteration of Ghost Rider will debut in the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In Romania, an alcoholic French priest named Moreau warns a monastery about an impending attack by the devil's forces to obtain a boy named Danny. In the attack, Moreau tries to help the boy and his mother Nadya escape, but the distrusting mother shoots at Moreau and flees with her son. Moreau believes that only the Ghost Rider can protect the boy. He finds the Rider and seeks his help.
Eight years have passed since Johnny Blaze became the Ghost Rider – a vengeful, fiery spirit who feeds on the evil of his victims and consumes the souls of sinners. No matter how big or small the infraction — anything from genocide to a white lie — the Rider does not differentiate. This drives Blaze into hiding, fighting the evil spirit within him. In exchange for his help, Moreau to restore Johnny's soul and remove the Ghost Rider's curse. Meanwhile, pursuers force Nadya and Danny from the road and bring them to their leader: her former boyfriend Ray Carrigan. Carrigan has Danny tied up and is about to execute Nadya when the Ghost Rider appears; the Ghost Rider kills several of Carrigan's men and then moves in on Danny. Nadya distracts the Ghost Rider, who then is shot with grenades into submission.
Johnny awakens in hospital. Despite his injuries he leaves the hospital, and despite not trusting him, he convinces Nadya to accept his help. Carrigan tells Roarke about the Rider, and Roarke speaks an incantation to Danny over phone, which effectively prevents the Rider from sensing Danny's location. Roarke warns it will not shield Carrigan from being sensed and gives him instructions to deliver Danny. Nadya tells Blaze that as she lay dying, she made a deal with Roarke: her life in return for him impregnating her with Danny, making Danny a direct vessel for Roarke and the potential for him to have unlimited power on the surface world. Roarke lacks this power so far from Hell. Danny nearly escapes, but breaks his ankle and is recaptured. That night, Nadya and Johnny interrogate a known contact of Carrigan's. Johnny takes off ahead of Nadya to deal with Carrigan. Nadya rescues Danny as the Rider converts a mining machine (a Bagger 288 [11] ) into a massive fiery machine, destroying their hideout complex and mortally wounding Carrigan. When Ghost Rider catches up to Nadya and starts to use his Penance Stare on her, Danny is able to stop the Rider with a word, exercising his hidden power.
Roarke is not done with Carrigan; he turns Carrigan into a demon called Blackout capable of instantly decaying anything he touches. Johnny and Nadya bring Danny to the monastery. Moreau explains that the Ghost Rider is the twisted incarnation of the Spirit of Justice, Zarathos, after being captured and tortured in Hell. Moreau tells Johnny that he can exorcise the spirit if Johnny tells a secret that only he knows of. Johnny confesses that his deal with Roarke was really a selfish one: his stepfather had accepted his cancer and was ready to die; Johnny was the one who did not want him to go. Moreau exorcises the spirit and Johnny becomes human again. The head monk Methodius proclaims that Danny will never be safe from the influence of evil and says he must die, taking them captive in order to execute the boy. Carrigan intervenes, killing the monks and taking Danny captive again. The others follow, with Johnny not wanting to desert Danny after having promised to protect him. With the ritual to transfer Roarke's spirit and power into Danny underway, the three infiltrate the compound to save him. Carrigan kills Moreau, but Danny (who Roarke states has the same powers as he does) gives Johnny back the power of the Ghost Rider. Roarke manages to escape with Danny and the Ghost Rider and Nadya give pursuit. After a vehicular struggle, Ghost Rider manages to defeat Carrigan and causes the vehicle carrying Roarke and Danny to crash. The Ghost Rider sends Roarke back into Hell while Danny, who had died in the accident, is returned to his mother. Channeling the blue flame of Zarathos, Johnny revives Danny and assures him of his safety.
The angelic blue flaming Ghost Rider rides off on his motorcycle, saying: "My name is Johnny Blaze. I'm the Ghost Rider."

After stealing a man's money, Danny is ready to escape with Nadya, but they're easily tracked down by Carrigan, who manages to kidnap the boy despite Nadya's resistance and Ghost Rider 's intervention. Acknowledged of the Rider's presence, Roarke casts a spell on the boy, so that Zarathos won't be able to perceive him at distance. Danny, anyway, is not an easy hostage and forces Carrigan's car out of the road, succesfully killing one of his captors; during the following escape attempt, anyway, Danny breaks an ankle and is captured once again. He's taken in an excavation point, where Carrigan buys some weapons from a dealer in order to be able to fight the Rider, who attacks immediately after the deal is done.
During the fight, Nadya frees Danny and takes him awat, but, smelling the Devil's blood, Zarathos starts to follow them: awakening his demonic powers, Danny stops the demon from hurting him or his mother, thus permitting to Blaze, back as a human, and Moreau, to bring them to Methodius ' secret sanctuary. Methodius, anyway, doesn't want to protect Danny, but to kill him: as the monk is ready to decapitate the boy, Carrigan, now Blackout, arrives at the sanctuary and kills all the monks, and Danny is captured once again.
Danny is brought in Turkey, in the place farest fom Heaven. In here, Roarke starts a ritual to possess the boy's body. The ritual is interrupted by Moreau and Blaze, come to the rescue: the effort seemes pointless, since Moreau is easily killed by Blackout and Blaze is about to end the same way. Danny, now conscious of his powers, gives back Zarathos' curse to Johnny, who's able to transform in Ghost Rider once again.
During the following fight, Danny is taken by Roarke, who tries to escape with him. They're reached by Ghost Rider, who kills Roarke. Danny is heavily wounded from a car accident caused by Zarathos, but the demon, turned an angel as he originally was, heals him with his powers. Danny is now free to live in peace with Nadya, and to use his powers for the forces of good.

Just how many Ghost Riders are there in the Marvel Universe?

They are the Spirits of Vengeance. Fiery, angelic beings. “Heaven’s Black Ops.” They were, as told in a flashback from GHOST RIDER (2006) #33 , born out of a supreme being’s will to keep depravity and wickedness in check. They weren’t native to America but spanned countless countries, cultures, and eras. And, one Ghost Rider is bad enough, but to face a whole army of them? GHOST RIDER: HEAVEN’S ON FIRE (2009) #6 and DOCTOR STRANGE: DAMNATION (2018) #4 showed that it was a fate worse than death.
It was once believed that Hell-lord Mephisto was the creator of the Ghost Riders. Sell your soul, become a cursed, flaming skull with immense power. But it’s a little more complicated than that. According to GHOST RIDER (2006) #18 , the rogue archangel Zadkiel bonded the Sprits of Vengeance to the chosen, as he was in charge of maintaining them. This spirit, an “entity of heaven,” would be connected to a targeted human host, like stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze , whose purpose was to purify sins through fighting. Whereas the Spirits of Vengeance that served Mephisto directly were demonic entities, as portrayed in DOCTOR STRANGE: DAMNATION (2018) #1 .
Regardless of their origin, one thing is for certain. The legacy of the Ghost Rider is filled with “pain, punishment, and vengeance.” So, hop on your preferred Hell-Vehicle of choice, and let’s take a fiendish ride down this hair-raising highway of history.

In AVENGERS (2018) #7 , an intelligent caveman from 1,000,000 B.C. was the lone survivor of a Wendigo attack. The monster named the caveman “Ghost” and challenged him to find them. It was during this journey that Ghost was approached by a snake and was given a Spirit of Vengeance, thus making him the 1,000,000 B. C. Ghost Rider . Although he loses the battle and his Hell Mammoth to the Wendigo, B.C. Ghost Rider would later join the Stone Age Avengers, such as 1,000,000 B. C. Black Panther, to battle the Fallen in MARVEL LEGACY (2017) #1 and the First Host in the pages of AVENGERS (2018) .
The following Ghost Rider was Hellhawk , a Sioux chieftain during the 11th century. First appearing in GHOST RIDER (2006) #33, he was part of the 1,000 A. D. Avengers, and, according to some dialogue in AVENGERS (2018) #24 , had a rivalry with the Puritan Avenger/Ghost Rider Noble Kale . (Kale is also the ancestor of two other Ghost Riders, Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch ). Hellhawk was killed by Necrosis, on orders by Belasco of the Corrupted as a threat to Mephisto to keep all Spirits of Vengeance out of Limbo. The message was definitely received.
The next prominent Ghost Rider was Kushala , AKA the Spirit Rider. An Apache woman from the 19th century, her parents and her tribe were killed by the United States Army. She prayed for help from the Creator but instead received an answer from Leviathan, a Spirit of Vengeance. During that time, she was known as the Demon Rider and was even the Sorcerer Supreme. She would be transported to the modern era with other Sorcerers Supreme to fight the Forgotten in DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE SORCERERS SUPREME (2016) and starred in her own vertical series on the Marvel Unlimited app, GHOST RIDER: KUSHALA INFINITY COMIC (2021) .

THE PRESENT
Debuting in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT (1971) #5 , Johnny Blaze was the first Ghost Rider in Marvel Comics history and the second character to use the name; Carter Slade, the Phantom Rider , has the honor of using the name first. Blaze was a motorcycle stuntman who bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance named Zarathos to save his surrogate father from death. Of course, Mephisto couldn’t just stand by when such a deal was forged. Since this pivotal life choice, Blaze has been on tons of teams including the Legion of Monsters and most notably the Midnight Sons . Oh, and he was also the King of Hell for a few years . Talk about a promotion!
Blaze hasn’t always been the Ghost Rider in the present era. He actually gave up his powers in 1983, and it wouldn’t be until GHOST RIDER (1990) #1 when a new person stepped in to fill the Ghost Rider vacuum. Danny Ketch is Blaze’s long-lost, younger brother, and unlike his predecessor, would get along well with his Spirit, the Marvel Universe’s iteration of the Angel of Death. It was assumed Ketch died at the end of his series, until he was seen alive and well. In addition to being a Ghost Rider, Ketch was the host of Noble Kale, a knight of Zadkiel, and the Death Rider. Adding to his ever-growing resume, Ketch was also one-fourth of the NEW FANTASTIC FOUR , along with Gray Hulk Joe Fixit , Spider-Man , and Wolverine .

After the FEAR ITSELF event, a Central American woman named Alejandra Jones was introduced as the new Ghost Rider. One difference between her and her fellow Ghost Riders was that she trained for the role; when the time came, her mentor, Adam, performed the ritual to transform Jones into the formidable being. She would later be trained by Blaze, but after some wild occurrences, he would take most of his powers back from her. Furious, Jones used her remaining powers to protect her village as the Guardian Fantasma, but it would be short-lived as maniacal symbiote Carnage killed her in ABSOLUTE CARNAGE: SYMBIOTE OF VENGEANCE (2019) #1 .
One of the latest Ghost Riders is Robbie Reyes , introduced in ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER (2014) #1 . A young man from East Los Angeles, Reyes was a high school student and auto body mechanic. He wanted to move him and his younger brother Gabe into a safer neighborhood, but didn’t have the money, so Reyes entered a street race to win $50,000. All did not go to plan. Reyes was shot—and then revived—by the spirit of Eli Morrow (his estranged uncle who was also a satanic serial killer). While fending off his uncle’s urges to kill indiscriminately, Ghost Rider: Reyes became an Avenger and would eventually be freed of Eli’s influence in AVENGERS (2018) #25 .
The next character to become a Ghost Rider is a bit of a detour, as he didn’t become one in the “traditional” sense. During Mephisto’s takeover of Las Vegas, Doctor Strange —yes, that Doctor Strange —was a Ghost Rider in DOCTOR STRANGE: DAMNATION (2018) #2 . How did it happen? Strange’s consciousness was tricked by letting him believe that “Loki,” “Scarlet Witch, and “Clea” helped him escape from his cell, when in reality, he was attacking his rescuers while his soul was in Hell. Fortunately, with help from some Avengers, Bats the Bassett Hound, and even Dormammu , Strange was able to escape Hell and return to his “normal” state in DOCTOR STRANGE (2015) #389 .

Kenshiro "Zero" Cochrane was an anarchist hacker in a gang called the Hotwire Martyrs in the year 2099. Shot by a rival gang and on the brink of death, he transferred his consciousness to cyberspace, where he was discovered by an AI collective named Ghostworks. When asked to become their avatar of change, Cochrane obviously said yes and was downloaded into a Cybertek 101 warbot. He made it his mission to avenge his and his fallen friends’ deaths, but the rest of his story would remain unwritten. He would, however, reappear in GHOST RIDER 2099 (2019) #1 and SPIDER-MAN 2099: EXODUS ALPHA (2022) , the latter of which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 2099 universe. Maybe his story isn’t done after all…

THE MULTIVERSE
What happens when you combine the Punisher , Ghost Rider, and awesome cosmic might? You get Frank Castle as the Cosmic Ghost Rider ! This version of Castle was from an alternate universe in which Thanos conquered everything . After making a deal with Mephisto to become the Ghost Rider (and receiving an upgrade from the Power Cosmic), Castle would end up as a servant of Thanos after spending centuries trying to kill him. In COSMIC GHOST RIDER (2018) , Castle traveled through time and attempted to raise baby Thanos to be a better person, but unfortunately this plan had the exact opposite effect. Post- INFINITY WARS (2018) , he spent time with the Guardians of the Galaxy for a bit, destroyed Marvel history in a series of the same name , and was last seen seeking revenge on Mephisto in REVENGE OF THE COSMIC GHOST RIDER (2019) #5 .

In short, Marvel history has always had its Ghost Riders. Just make sure you’re not on the wrong side of them. Especially if your name is Mephisto .
