Like with most Pokmon games, Pokmon Scarlet & Violet have multiple gyms spread across the region. These gyms have no set path so you can seek them out however you want, whether you go for the strongest straight away or when you happen upon a town. In the region, you have to go through the Gym Challenge and defeat them to take on a special test known as Champion Assessment to obtain the Champion Rank. The league is run by Ms. Geeta, who is one of the region's Champions and reigns as the most skilled of the trainers

This page is to detail all the gyms, and the Gym Leaders and their Pokmon. They are listed in the logical order based on their level, but can technically be tackled in any order. You can also repeat the Gym Tests to earn rewards

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Montenevera Gym, including how to beat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme and double battles

How to defeat the Montenevera Ghost Gym Leader.

You have to battle Ryme , the Ghost-type Gym Leader of Montenevera , during Victory Road in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet .

Before you battle her in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet , however, you must complete the Montenevera Gym Test by winning three double battles in a row.

Below, we cover how to beat the double battle trainers and how to beat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme , so you can add another Gym Badge to your collection.

On this page:

If you'd like to learn more about your Paldea adventure, visit our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet walkthrough .

If you've not unlocked any Pokémon Centers near the town yet, the easiest way to reach Montenevera in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is to travel the path northeast of Medali, following the trail up the snowy mountain.

We recommend setting the Pokémon Centers as your destinations from the map on your way, which makes the right path up the mountain appear clearer. Once you've reached Montenevera, you’ll find the Gym up the main steps on the eastern side of the town.

The Montenevera Gym test tasks you with taking to the stage and winning three double battles in a row. This means you and your opponents will be using the first two Pokémon in your party to begin with, so choose wisely!

To help you out during the continuous battles, your Pokemon will be healed in-between each match-up, and you'll receive attack, special attack, and speed boosts from the cheering crowd.

First up is Trainer Tas, so here's how to beat him during the double battle:

You'll get 5,600 prize money for defeating Tas, and can now move on to the next fight.

It's Trainer Lani next, and here's how to beat her:

You'll get 5,600 prize money for defeating Lani, and can move on to the final battle.

ghost gym leader scarlet

The last double battle is against MC Sledge himself, and here's how to beat him:

You'll get another 5,600 prize money , and can now return to the staffer at the Gym to start your battle with Ryme, so make sure you heal all your Pokémon again.

Ryme - the Montenevera Gym Leader - loves Ghost-type Pokémon, and her team reflects that.

Ghost-type Pokémon are weak to Dark and Ghost-type Pokémon .

Dark-type Pokémon will do best here, as they aren't vulnerable to Ryme's Ghost moves. If you picked Sprigatito as your starter , we recommend using it here, as it is a dual Grass and Dark-type. Kingambit , Lokix, and Maschiff (and evolution Mabosstif) are also great against Ryme. If you don't have any of these, then just make sure you're bringing at least two strong Pokémon with Dark or Ghost-type moves.

ghost gym leader scarlet

The battle against Ryme will be a little different than other Gym leaders, as it continues with the double Pokémon fights. So there will always be two of Ryme's Pokémon on the stage until you get down to her last one.

Ryme will still Terastallize her last Pokémon like normal, so, even though it’s not a Ghost-type at first, it will become one. So, you'll have to battle this Terastallized Toxtricity at the same time as Houndstone.

Ryme’s full Pokémon team is:

ghost gym leader scarlet

For defeating Ryme, you’ll receive 7,560 prize money, TM114 Shadow Ball and a Gym Badge - the level limit increase for having Pokémon listen to you and making them easier to catch will depend on where you are in the Victory Road storyline.

Also depending on where you are in Victory Road, you may have a battle with Nemona after beating Ryme.

Who will you face next on Victory Road? Will it be Katy , Brassius , Kofu , Iono , Larry , Tulip or Grusha ? Or maybe you’re ready to battle the Elite Four and the Top Champion ! If you want to take a break from Gyms, there's always the Path of Legends and Starfall Street stories to tackle as well.

Ryme, the ghost-type Paldea gym leader, poses with her microphone

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet ’s Montenevera is a beautiful small town in the snowy cliffs of Paldea, home to Ryme , the ghost -type gym leader.

If you’re going in order of difficulty, Ryme will be the sixth gym leader you face.

Montenevera gym challenge (Warm up the audience for Ryme’s concert!)

Before taking on Ryme, you’ll need to take down trainers in three back-to-back double battles. Make sure your first two Pokémon in your party are ready for battle.

The battles are as follows:

  • Greavard, level 40 (ghost) and Shuppet, level 40 (ghost)
  • Misdreavus, level 40 (ghost) and Haunter, level 40 (ghost/poison)
  • Drifblim, level 40 (ghost/flying) and Sableye, level 40 (ghost)

Throughout these battles, people in the crowd will cheer you on, occasionally raising your Pokémon’s stats.

Ryme gym leader battle

Ryme uses ghost-type Pokémon. Her party is as follows:

  • Mimikyu, level 41 (ghost/fairy)
  • Banette, level 41 (ghost)
  • Houndstone, level 42 (ghost)
  • Toxtricity, level 42 (electric/poison with ghost Tera Type)

Similarly to the gym challenge, the crowd will cheer during the battle, but they’ll also cheer for Ryme sometimes, boosting her Pokémon’s stats as well.

Ryme gym battle counters

Ghost-type Pokémon are weak against ghost - and dark -type moves. Since using more ghost-types is a double-edged sword, consider sticking to dark-type Pokémon.

You can also use normal -type Pokémon, but with other move types, since ghost-type moves have no effect on normal-type Pokémon and vice-versa. (For example, you could use a Zangoose with Shadow Claw, a ghost-type move you get from TM61.)

We recommend any of the following, which you can find relatively nearby:

  • Greavard (ghost) Glaseado Mountain
  • Sneasel (dark/ice) Glaseado Mountain

Montenevera gym rewards

After beating Ryme, she’ll give you TM114 (Shadow Ball), a special ghost-type move that hits hard. If this is your sixth gym badge, you’ll be able to control Pokémon up to level 50.

The next gym leader is Tulip in Alfornada .

Gym Leaders return to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Like previous generations, there are eight in total that you need to face for Victory Road . Ryme is one of the eight leaders.

Ryme is the Gym Leader of Montenevera Gym, a Ghost-type gym in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Going down the Victory Road towards the Pokémon League will eventually bring you to one of the stronger gym leaders in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet at the Montenevera Ghost-type gym. Ryme is the sixth strongest of the gym leaders and you will be able to challenge her whenever you feel ready to claim the Ghost Badge.

Players still early on in their journey may want to keep an eye on what’s coming so they can train Pokémon ahead of time, and those arriving in Montenevera will want to know what awaits them. With this Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Ghost-type gym leader guide, you’ll be able to ensure victory against Ryme both times.

In this article you will learn:

  • What kind of test you’ll face at the Montenevera gym
  • Details on every Pokémon that Ryme will use in battle
  • Strategies to make sure you’re able to defeat her
  • What team you’ll face in the Ryme rematch

When you feel ready to rumble with Ryme, it may actually be time to work through some of the Titans. You’ll need several of the travel upgrades to Miraidon or Koraidon, as Montenevera is not an easy trek through the icy wilderness of Glaseado Mountain (North).

Try different paths around the mountain if you’re struggling, and eventually, you should find your way into the frozen refuge. While it’s not quite the strongest gym in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Montenevera does happen to be the furthest north and as a result, it’s one of the more difficult ones to reach.

Montenevera gym test

ghost gym leader scarlet

When you’re ready to push towards the battle with Ryme, it’ll be time to start with a trio of double battles. The theme of the Montenevera Ghost-type gym, aside from the bumping music, will be the art and challenge of double battles with two Pokémon competing for each trainer at the same time.

There isn’t an elaborate puzzle or challenge heading into this test, but that also means there’s no avoiding these battles. Here are the three trainers you’ll face in the Montenevera gym test:

  • Shuppet (Level 40)
  • Greavard (Level 40)
  • Haunter (Level 40)
  • Misdreavus (Level 40)
  • Sableye (Level 40)
  • Drifblim (Level 40)

On top of the XP you’ll earn with each victory, each of these trainers will reward you with 5,600 Pokédollars upon defeat. If you’ve secured the Amulet Coin, you can net 33,600 Pokédollars before the full gym battle even starts, and a win over Ryme for the Ghost Badge will tack on an extra 15,120 Pokédollars.

How to beat Ryme for the Ghost Badge

ghost gym leader scarlet

When you have dispatched with Ryme’s small time crew, you can then focus on what she’ll be bringing to battle. As with the earlier battles, Rhyme will challenge you to a double battle kicking off with Banette and Mimikyu.

Here are the Pokémon you’ll face the first time against Ryme:

  • Ability: Insomnia
  • Moves: Icy Wind, Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak
  • Ghost- and Fairy-type
  • Ability: Disguise
  • Moves: Light Screen, Shadow Sneak, Slash
  • Ability: Sand Rush
  • Moves: Play Rough, Crunch, Phantom Force
  • Electric- and Poison-type
  • Tera Type: Ghost
  • Ability: Punk Rock
  • Moves: Discharge, Hex, Hyper Voice

Beware of Icy Wind, Play Rough, and Crunch as each of these could deal major damage to a Dark-, Ghost-, or Psychic-type Pokémon you bring to the battle. When things move forward, it’ll be Toxtricity that you have to deal with in its Terrastalized form. One helpful strategy would be bringing in a Normal-type Pokémon with Ghost- or Dark-type moves, such as a Zangoose with Shadow Claw via TM 61.

Like most of the battles at this stage of the game, having your top Pokémon up to at least Level 42 if not higher will massively improve your chances of victory. Once you do pick up the win, Ryme will award you the Ghost Badge and TM 114 which teaches Shadow Ball. If this happens to be your sixth gym badge, you can now control all Pokémon at Level 50 or below.

How to defeat Ryme in your gym leader rematch

ghost gym leader scarlet

After you’ve pushed through the Victory Road all the way to the Pokémon League and become Champion, there will be a few more challenges on deck. The Academy Ace Tournament will begin to come together after you become Champion, and as part of that process, you’ll get to travel to all the various gyms in Paldea for a gym leader rematch.

Here are the Pokémon you’ll face in the Montenevera gym rematch against Ryme:

  • Moves: Icy Wind, Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak, Phantom Force
  • Moves: Light Screen, Shadow Sneak, Slash, Play Rough
  • Ghost- and Dark-type
  • Ability: Pressure
  • Moves: Protect, Sucker Punch, Curse, Will-O-Wisp
  • Moves: Play Rough, Crunch, Phantom Force, Ice Fang
  • Moves: Overdrive, Hex, Boomburst, Sludge Bomb

When you’re looking to take on Ryme the second time for the Montenevera gym leader rematch, get ready for a significantly upgraded team. Just as it was the first time around, Ryme will challenge you to a double battle with her extra deadly team, but focusing on Dark- and Ghost-type attacks should still put you on the path to victory.

Like she did the first time, Ryme will Terrastalize her Toxtricity at the first opportunity, so be ready to combat that power and survive a Terrastalization boosted hit from Hex. With this Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Montenevera gym guide, you should be able to get your team properly prepared and trained so that victory is assured each time you rumble with Ryme.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet reveals Greavard

Ghost and dark-type Pokémon are your friends in this battle. However, since ghost-type is weak to itself, you may not want to exhibit the recklessness it would take to use ghost-type Pokémon. It may be better to just use Pokémon that know ghost-type moves. Most of Rymes Pokémon, even the ghost-types, know ghost and even dark-type moves, ensuring that their weakness to fellow ghost-types is covered. Houndstone’s Play Rough attack is also sure to batter any Dark-type Pokémon you may have. As for Ryme’s Tera-type usage, she is very unique. Her Banette has a Steel-Tera type and her Toxtricity has a Ghost-Tera type. Banette having steel-type would make fairy-type Pokémon less effective against it, and Toxtricity with ghost-typing would remove its weakness to poison.

What is there to do after beating Ryme? Well, if you have some Gym Leaders left to challenge, refer to this guide .

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How to Beat Ryme (Montenevera Gym Guide)

One simple to follow strategy can help players to sweep aside the trainers at the Montenevera Gym, as well as the Ghost-type Gym Leader there, Ryme.

Assuming they're following the optimal gym order for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet , Montenevera Gym will be the sixth step on players' paths toward Victory Road. It's way up in the Glaseado Mountain in the northeastern part of the Paldea region, so players may want to think about upgrading their Legendary Pokemon before their visit there so that they're able to climb the mountain rather than follow the path.

RELATED: Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: What do the Starter Evolutions Look Like?

Regardless of how players get there, they should be prepared to take on a team of terrifying Ghost-type Pokemon when they do, as that's exactly what they can expect from the Montenevera Gym and its leader, Ryme. Thankfully, one of the Pokemon that can be found lurking on the outskirts of Montenevera is able to tear through Ryme's team like wet tissue paper, turning what would otherwise have been a fairly challenging battle into a leisurely walk in the park.

How to Prepare for the Montenevera Gym

Given that players will primarily be up against Ghost-type Pokemon , they have a few different options when it comes to preparing for the Montenevera Gym. A Normal-type Pokemon with Ghost or Dark-type attacks can work very well if players already happen to have one, but the best strategy for the Montenevera Gym revolves around Sneasel , which players will be able to find wandering around on the slopes near the northern entrance to Montenevera not far from the Pokemon Center.

Players should catch themselves a couple of Sneasel and level them up to level 42 (they should already be around level 40 when caught), as it's at this point that they'll be able to learn the Dark-type move , Beat Up. Beat Up hits the opposition once for each Pokemon the player has in their team, meaning that with a full party, it will hit six times providing none of the player's team has been knocked out. This alone is enough to one-shot (well, technically, six-shot) all but one of the Pokemon that players will be facing during the Montenevera Gym test and the subsequent battle with Ryme.

How to Complete the Montenevera Gym Test (Warm Up the Audience for Ryme's Concert!)

The Montenevera Gym test in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet takes the form of three consecutive doubles battles. The first is against Tas, who has a Greavard and a Shuppet, both of which are at level 40. After that, players will take on a musician named Lani, who has a level 40 Misdreavus and a level 40 Haunter. Finally, players will have to beat MC Sledge himself.

MC Sledge has a level 40 Drifblim and a level 40 Sableye, both of which, like the previous four Pokemon, can be taken out easily pretty using Beat Up. Players will get a total of ₽16,800 for beating all three opponents ( ₽5,600 per trainer), after which, they'll be able to battle Ryme by returning to the Montenevera Gym and speaking with the lobby staff there.

How to Beat Ryme at the Montenevera Gym

Much like the previous six Pokemon, three of Ryme's team can be taken out with a single use of Beat Up, including her Tera Pokemon , Toxtricity. Mimikyu will need to be dealt with using two attacks though on account of its disguise. Strictly speaking, Metal Claw (assuming one of the two Sneasel still has access to it) is the most effective way of taking it down, though Beat Up is the best attack to use first on account of it hitting six times.

Tempting though it may be, players should refrain from using Hone Claws to boost their attack (again, assuming they didn't have Sneasel forget it to make room for Beat Up), as the crowd's cheering will do that for them as the battle goes on. Terastallizing Sneasel is fairly pointless too, as the Tera type of a wild Sneasel will usually be Ice rather than Dark, meaning that Terastallizing will actually make Beat Up weaker rather than stronger.

Once all of Ryme's Pokemon have been defeated, she'll hand over the Montenevera Gym badge, which, assuming players are following the optimal gym order in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet , makes it easier for players to catch Pokemon up to level 50 and ensures that they'll always obey. Ryme will also give players ₽7,560 and TM114, Shadow Ball. After a brief conversation with Hassel, players can make their way back down the mountain and head southwest toward Alfornada Gym and its Psychic-type leader, Tulip.

Given how close they are to the Glaseado Gym and how far away Alfornada is from Montenevera, some players may opt to tackle the Ice-type Gym Leader Grusha before taking on Tulip. This is fine, though players should keep in mind that Grusha's team is slightly stronger than Tulip's in terms of levels (level 44/45 vs level 47/48).

ghost gym leader scarlet

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a variety of Gym Leaders for players to defeat throughout the game. One of which includes the elusive Ghost Type Gym, hidden all the way at Montenevera Town. Once players arrive, they’ll need to complete the Gym Test before challenging the Gym leader, Ryme. So today, let’s discuss how to beat the Montenevera Gym Test & Leader in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

How To Beat The Montenevera Gym Test

Pokemon Scarlet Montenevera Gym Test Initiated at Front Desk

To begin the Gym Test, all you’ll need to do is speak with the front desk person of the Gym, from which they will then give you the challenge.

Pokemon Scarlet Montenevera Gym Test Passed

This time around, you’ll have to participate in a series of double battles against three Ghost Type trainers to help bring in a crowd for Ryme. The double battles are very straightforward, where each trainer will exclusively use Ghost Type Pokemon, and after each battle, your Pokemon will be fully healed. After the third trainer is defeated, you’ll finally be able to challenge the Gym Leader Ryme to a battle.

How To Beat Gym Leader Ryme

Pokemon Scarlet Ghost Type Gym Leader Ryme

Like the Gym Test, Ryme will participate in a double battle against you, from which she has four strong Ghost Types to use, all of which are level 41, except her ace which is level 42.

She starts out by using her Mimikyu and Houndstone, the final evolution of Grevard. Mimikyu is a Ghost Fairy Pokemon while Houndstone is a pure Ghost Type. Any Pokemon that specializes in Ghost or Dark Type moves will work best against these guys. This also applies to Ryme’s final two Pokemon, which are Banette and her Tera Pokemon, Toxtricity.

Pokemon Scarlet Ghost Type tera Toxtricity Pokemon

Normally, Toxtricity would be a Poison Electric Pokemon, but via a Terastallize, it now becomes a Ghost Type. Again, keep using Ghost and Dark Type moves as they will be super effective against all of her Pokemon.

When Toxtricity enters the fray, you’ll want to aim all of your attacks at it, as if left unchecked, it will then wipe the field with its devastating AOE attack, Discharge. Destroy Toxtricity, and you should have no problem cleaning up the rest of her Ghost Types. Upon her defeat, she’ll give you a cool selfie and the Ghost Type Gym Badge.

Ryme's Pokemon Team and Types

Type and suggested level, ryme's pokemon, best pokemon to beat ryme, when starting with sprigatito.

Meowscarada is the one of the absolute best Pokemon to bring against Ryme, with resistance to Ghost Type and Electric Type moves. With Flower Trick 's guaranteed Critical Hit, and Night Slash 's high Critical Hit Ratio, even at same levels, Meowscarada can one shot most of Ryme's Pokemon. With the gym battle being a Doubles Battle , put Grafaiai or Cyclizar on your party's second slot to provide support for Meowscarada.

When Starting with Fuecoco

Skeledirge's Ghost type moves are Super Effective against most of Ryme's Pokemon, but that also means that their Ghost Type moves are also Super Effective against Skeledirge. To avoid this, you can Terastallize Skeledirge at the start of the match, in order to remove the Ghost Type, and still deal Super Effective hits against Ryme's Pokemon.

When Starting with Quaxly

Water type moves deal neutral damage to Ghost type Pokemon, so using Quaquaval is possible. Make use of the Doubles Battle setup and pair Quaquaval with a Grimmsnarl or Grafaiai to make quick work of Ryme's first 2 Pokemon and rack up the Attack and Special Attack boosts from the cheering crowd! . You can also choose to use Grimmsnarl and Grafaiai together instead, to deal Super Effective hits against Ryme's Pokemon!

Best Counters

Tips and strategy to beat ryme's rematch team, make use of type advantages.

Ryme's Ghost type Pokemon are weak to Dark type Pokemon. Using Pokemon like Kingambit allows you to use Super Effective moves against Ryme's Pokemon, while resisting or being completely immune to attacks like Sludge Bomb thanks to its part-Steel Typing.

Alternatively, you can also make use of Pokemon like Farigiraf , who are immune to Ghost type moves because of its Normal Typing. Farigiraf's diverse learnset allows it to learn moves such as Crunch and Shadow Ball which are Super Effective against Ryme's Ghost Pokemon. Post Game Content: What to Do After the Story

All Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leaders (so far...)

All Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leaders (so far...)

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have been confirmed to have branching storylines that will not necessarily involve the traditional gym leader and Elite Four system. However, that doesn't mean for those trainers who love to battle, there won't be a fresh cast of brand-new gym leaders to take on in the Paldea region!

We've already seen a few of these new gym leaders in action via trailers and other promotional content. This article will cover all of the Pokémon Scarlet, and Violet gym leaders revealed so far, what their type specialty is, and what their signature Pokémon will be!

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leader List

Several gym leaders have already been announced, along with their respective signature Pokémon and their type specialty. Check out the full list of reveals below!

Grusha

Grusha used to be a professional snowboarder, but he is now the gym leader of the Glaseado Gym. Grusha specializes in Ice-type Pokémon and has the new Pokémon Cetitan as his partner. He has a coolheaded personality but is prone to get heated when an intense battle comes his way.

Brassius

Brassius is the gym leader of Artazon, a town rich with flowers and art. He is, as you might expect, a Grass-type specialist, but we still don't know what his signature Pokémon is yet. In his trailer, he is seen using a Terrastalized Sudowoodo to make it a real Grass-type.

Iono

Iono is the gym leader of Levinvia City. She is a streamer and often broadcasts her gym battles to her many viewers. The so-called "Supercharged Streamer" is a master of the Electric type and battles alongside her signature Pokémon, Bellibolt.

Geeta

Geeta is not a gym leader but the chairwoman of the Pokéon League, which operates Paldea's Pokéon Gyms. Among the region's Champions, she is said to be the most skilled trainer of them all. Needless to say, a battle against Geeta is all but certain for any trainer who has defeated the other gyms.

These are all the gym leaders we know about so far. If Pokémon Scarlet and Violet take the same approach as previous games, we can expect to see eight gym leaders total, four Elite Four members, and a final Champion (with an extra super boss if we're lucky).

Going deep: How to become one of Moscow’s underground ‘diggers’

Moscow has always had an extensive underground system. You've probably heard about the well hidden Metro-2, underground bunkers, and a vast network of tunnels. Since the Soviet Union’s breakup, a niche subculture of underground exploration – “digging” - has emerged, helped by the Internet to take off. “Diggers” are now ten a penny in Moscow, with the race to find Metro-2 hotter than ever. Here are the easiest (and most legal) ways you can take part in Moscow’s clandestine craze:

1. Get creeped out at the Neglinnaya River

Visitors on a tour of the Neglinnaya river tunnel during an underground walking tour.

Visitors on a tour of the Neglinnaya river tunnel during an underground walking tour.

The Neglinnaya, an underground branch of the Moskva River, is the birthplace of digging, and for a long time was the only underground tour available in Moscow. Flowing from north to south through the very center of Moscow, the river initially operated as a moat in the early days of Muscovy before being moved underground due to flooding and pollution. Having previously operated as a workshop, public bath house , and watermill, the Neglinnaya is also popular among ghost hunters, who believe that spirits dwell there.

The Neglinnaya’s size and easy entrance points make it the perfect place to begin your digging experience, as it is spacious, generally flat, and an easily manageable walk for first-timers. Tour-goers will also find out about the river’s creepiest dwellers, such as Darya Saltykova, Moscow’s sadistic landowner who tortured at least 38 of her serfs to death , or the world’s biggest rat, alleged to have grown to 10 meters long.

A two-hour tour (link in Russian) starts at 3,000 roubles ($52) per person.

2. See the ‘Nine Circles of Hell’ river

Moscow diggers explore underground channel.

Moscow diggers explore underground channel.

This underground river’s name is a little misleading  - although crossing it may involve gradually heightened levels of danger (just like the nine circles of hell in Dante’s Inferno ), you are unlikely to see Satan himself. In fact, the tour organizer’s website states that first timers will only meet some minor difficulties. The Nine Circles of Hell are a series of underground tributaries to the Neglinnaya – but these streams lead into each other vertically, rather than just horizontally. This means diggers must climb to each “circle” in order to continue the two-kilometre adventure – so maybe hit the gym before you take on this one.

This is an authentic digger experience, in which you will get the chance to climb through tight tubes, traverse waterfalls, and wade through waist-high water. Bring a spare pair of socks.

The tour (link in Russian) costs 2,000 ($34) roubles per person, including all clothes and equipment.

3. ‘Digger Trails’ tour

ghost gym leader scarlet

If you’ve tried the Moscow underground experience and are left craving something more authentic, Daniel Davidov is the man to hit up. Davidov is something of a legend among diggers, as his tour service Puteshestvie pod zemly (Journeys Underground) along the popular underground Neglinnaya River has appeared on Russian state news and The Discovery Channel. For a while, the adventurer even had his own talk show dedicated to the Moscow underground on radio station City FM.

Nowadays, opting to avoid the Neglinnaya River due to “broken bottles and drunk people,” Davidov offers tourists the chance to explore the more dilapidated but untouched parts of the capital’s subterrain . On one of his “Digger Trails” tour, explorers get the opportunity to climb across fallen pipes using only ropes, and get to climb real, hanging stalactites. After all this gaiety, diggers are rewarded with a cup of “digger tea” (whatever that is)!

Davidov works with the Moscow City Council to support the Moscow underground’s ecological maintenance, making the tour completely legal.

Prices for the 2.5-kilometer tour (link in Russian) start at 4,000 roubles ($70), which includes all the necessary equipment.

4. Or just join the online digger community

Most diggers are proactive in sharing their underground findings online. Keep up to date on the latest digging discoveries on the following sites and pages:
