What's New for 2023?

A styling refresh for 2023 updates the Telluride to make it even more attractive, including a refreshed grille, redesigned headlamps, and a new front bumper. Inside, Kia has integrated a new all-digital instrument panel with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as infotainment and gauge displays. We've seen similar layouts on luxury vehicles including the BMW iX , the Cadillac Escalade , and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-class , so it seems Kia is taking a note from the class above. Navigation is now standard across the lineup, as is an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. More rugged-looking X-Line and X-Pro trims join the crew and unlock the Telluride's maximum 5500-pound towing capacity.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We can't resist recommending the SX trim. It delivers a near-luxury experience with all the bells and whistles at a still-reasonable price. The SX comes standard with high-end features including a 12-way power driver's seat, black-painted 20-inch rims, a Harman/Kardon stereo, front and rear sunroofs, and second-row captain's chairs. Those who want the added sense of security that comes with all-wheel drive can have it for an extra $2000.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of every Telluride is a naturally aspirated V-6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Its engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that feeds the front wheels in the standard format—all-wheel drive is also optional across the board. The Telluride X-Line we tested sped to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. However, the big Kia didn't feel as responsive to throttle inputs at lower speeds as did some of its turbocharged rivals. The Telluride's ride is on the firm side, with harsh pavement sometimes throwing the three-row SUV off its intended path. A self-leveling rear air suspension is also available. Brakes are excellent and the steering is precise with a nice heft to its feel. The Telluride boasts up to 8.4 inches of ground clearance for off-road excursions, and it can tow up to 5500 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Unlike many rival three-row SUVs, the Telluride is only offered with a V-6 powertrain. The EPA estimates the front-drive version is the thriftiest, with ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models drop to 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, which are slightly higher numbers than V-6–powered competitors such as the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas and slightly lower than the Honda Pilot . The all-wheel-drive Telluride we tested on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route returned 26 mpg—exceeding its government rating. The 2023 V-6-powered Atlas earned 24 mpg while the Pilot Trailsport got 22 mpg during our real-world test. For more information about the Telluride's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Regardless of people's opinion about the Telluride's bold outward appearance, its interior is undeniably upscale and comfortable. The build quality is excellent, the materials are attractive, and the desirable features are plentiful. The SX trim tops them all with the fanciest options, which include driver's seat memory settings, a head-up display, heated and ventilated rear seats, a premium headliner, and nappa leather upholstery. Because the Telluride is several inches longer than the seven-passenger Kia Sorento , its cabin is even more spacious, especially for those in the wayback seat. There is room for eight with a second-row bench seat or room for seven with the optional captain's chairs. Along with ample interior storage throughout the cabin, we managed to fit four carry-on suitcases behind its third row and stuffed a total of 35 carry-ons with both back rows folded flat.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Telluride boasts a robust infotainment system that features a 12.3-inch touchscreen with popular content that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto capability, in-dash navigation, and onboard Wi-Fi. Also available is a 10-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, a 110-volt power inverter, and wireless smartphone charging. A feature called Driver Talk amplifies the driver's voice through speakers in the back two rows to better communicate with passengers back there.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology comes standard on all Telluride models. Several upgraded assists are also available, including automatic high-beams, a 360-degree camera system, and what Kia calls a Blind-Spot View Monitor. This tech projects a camera image of the vehicle's blind spot into the gauge cluster display. Key safety features include:

• Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
• Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Kia provides some of the best comprehensive coverage out there, with the longest powertrain warranty in the business. However, it lacks the complimentary scheduled maintenance of rivals such as the Toyota Highlander and the Chevy Traverse .

Building upon Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Junction Crossing Detection can help prevent or lessen a collision by detecting a vehicle that is proceeding perpendicular of the vehicle and warn the driver. If the risk of collision increases, the system can automatically brake to help prevent or lessen the effects of a collision.

Lane Change Oncoming will alert the driver if a vehicle is detected when changing lanes. If the risk of collision increases, the system can automatically assist the steering to help prevent or lessen the effects of a collision.

Lane Change Side can help alert the driver if the system detects a potential collision with another vehicle of the intended lane the driver is changing to. If the risk of collision increases, the system can automatically assist the steering to help prevent or lessen the effects of a collision.

Evasive Steering Assist Detection can help alert the driver if the system detects a pedestrian or cyclist overlapping the front of the vehicle. If the risk of collision increases, the system can automatically assist with evasive steering when there is space to evade the collision within the driving lane to help prevent or less the effects of a collision.

Junction Crossing Detection can help prevent or lessen a collision by detecting a vehicle that is proceeding in front of the vehicle and warn the driver. Lane Chance Oncoming alerts the driver if a potential collision is detected when changing lanes.

Sensors hidden in the corners of the rear bumper scan for passing cars, motorcycles, and/or other vehicles as you back up. If the system detects a potential hazard crossing into your intended path, audio and visual warnings and possible braking intervention are activated.

Park Distance Warning-Rear uses a sensor system to detect obstacles behind your vehicle. If a hazard is detected, the system provides an audible warning.

Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse uses the rear view camera and rear ultrasonic sensors to recognize the relative position of any nearby obstacles. If it anticipates a collision with an obstacle, the system warns the driver with visual and audible alarms while engaging the vehicle's brakes to prevent the collision.

The Surround View Monitor system offers a near all-around view in several viewing modes displayed on the Navigation monitor. Displaying real-time images from four cameras, the Surround View Monitor provides a virtual ‘bird's eye’ view, affording maximum convenience for parking and low-speed maneuvers.

Lane Departure Warning is your second set of eyes on the road. This camera-based system monitors the position of your vehicle within its lane and helps warn you if it deviates, or is about to deviate, from the lane. Lane Departure Warning also helps warn you of a lane departure when your vehicle is traveling above a certain speed and the vehicle's turn signal is not activated.

In addition to Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist may apply corrective steering if it senses you drifting outside your lane.

When Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go is activated, Lane Following Assist monitors lane markings to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go - Curve uses navigation data to predict an oncoming curve in the road ahead, helping reduce the vehicle's cruising speed and upon exiting the curve, helps return the vehicle's speed to the previous setting.

The system builds upon Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go by reflecting the learned driving style of the driver to help maintain distance from the vehicle ahead and drive at a speed set by the driver.

On highways where information is available, Highway Driving Assist can control the vehicle’s steering, acceleration and deceleration functions..

The system uses information detected from the forward facing camera to inform the driver of the indicated speed limit.

The system monitors the driver and will provide alerts if it senses the driver's attention level has been significantly reduced.

Upon exiting the vehicle, the vehicle can provide audible and visual warnings if unattended passengers remain in the rear seating area.

Furthermore, if enrolled in Kia Connect, the push notification will be sent to the registered account holder upon triggering of audible warning.

Safe Exit Assist prevents your passengers from exiting the vehicle when the radar detects a vehicle approaching from behind. If necessary, Safe Exit Assist will override attempts to deactivate the Electronic Child Safety Lock until it’s safe for your rear passengers to open and exit the vehicle.

When used with properly fitted seat-belts, this advanced system helps detect the presence of a front seat passenger, monitors the severity of an impact and controls airbag inflation accordingly to help reduce injuries in certain collisions.

When used with seat belts, the Dual Front Side Airbags offer an additional level of enhanced safety and can be effective at reducing injuries from certain collisions.

When used with seat belts, the Dual Rear Side Airbags offer an additional level of enhanced safety and can be effective at reducing injuries from certain collisions.

Side Curtain Airbags, when used in tandem with properly fitted seat belts for all seating positions can reduce injuries. The airbag system is managed by a number of advanced sensors that detect when an accident is imminent or underway and deploy the necessary airbags.

When used with seat belts, the Driver's Side Knee Airbag offers an additional level of enhanced safety and can be effective at reducing injuries from certain collisions.

If the airbag sensors detect an impending rollover; the system can deploy the side airbags, side curtain airbags and seat-belt pretensioners.

Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) is a universal child seat attachment system that allows for quick, easy and secure installation and removal of LATCH equipped child seats.

Easily check to see if all passengers are wearing their seat belts with a visual system located near the HVAC controls.

The first line of defense in safety are the seat belts. Front and rear 3-point seat belts are an integral part of an elaborate vehicle-wide safety system designed to help minimize the effects of an accident.

In the event of certain collisions, seat-belt pretensioners are designed to tighten the seat belts pulling the driver and occupants more snugly into their seats in anticipation of an impact to help to reduce the likelihood of injury.

The proper fitting of seat belts are critical to overall safety and comfort. The height-adjustable seat-belt anchors allow for seat-belts to be raised and lowered to achieve the perfect fit.

Put the transmission into reverse and the Rear-View Monitor will show a live image of what's behind your vehicle. For added convenience, a vehicle footprint that shows bumper width is superimposed in the display.

The foundation of your Kia's active safety system, the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) uses electronic sensors at each wheel hub to detect when wheels begin skid. If skidding under braking is detected, ABS modulates brake force to reduce skidding which in turn allows for reduced braking distances in addition to helping you maintain control of your vehicle.

Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) adds steering direction control capability, intervening when appropriate to further stabilize the vehicle. It helps you regain control and return the vehicle to its intended path.

Electronic Stability Control offers an enhanced level of vehicle control and peace of mind by offering improved directional stability helping you maintain the vehicle's intended direction of travel. ESC monitors and assists in the control of key vehicle functions by braking individual wheels and reducing engine power accordingly.

Hill Start Assist Control offers an added measure of security when moving from a stop on a steep hill by preventing the vehicle from rolling backward. It functions by gently applying the brakes for two seconds while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Downhill Brake Control offers peace of mind when descending steep grades by automatically engaging the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to maintain a steady descent speed of up to 5 mph, allowing you to concentrate on steering.

Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) offers the convenience and an added measure of preventative safety by constantly monitoring tire inflation pressures in all four tires. A warning light appears in the instrument cluster should any tire pressures drop below a specified range.

All doors have the convenience of one-touch auto-up and auto-down power windows.

Front Intermittent Windshield Wipers are convenient on rainy days.

The rear window washer/Wiper is a useful feature during inclement weather.

The interior rearview mirror offers two modes, one for day and one for nighttime driving.

The auto-dimming mirror reduces the glare of vehicle lights approaching from behind.

The auto-dimming mirror automatically dims the harsh glare of reflecting lights. And for additional peace of mind, the mirror features HomeLink®, a wireless control system that can operate garage doors, security systems, and more.

The Full Display Mirror® allows the driver to switch between a traditional rearview mirror and a camera based one that helps eliminate any objects intruding.

To handle tight parking situations, the power side view mirrors conveniently fold in.

You can program your side view mirrors to tilt down while you reverse, giving you a better view of what surrounds your vehicle.

Using the cabin microphone and speakers, this feature allows the front seat passengers to speak to the rear occupants without having to shout or turn around.

For times when 2nd and 3rd-row passengers may be asleep or utilizing their own devices, the sound system can be focused on only the 1st-row.

The dual-zone automatic climate control system offers individualized temperature for the driver and front passenger. The Auto De-fog System removes moisture from the front windshield and front door glass, controlling glass fogging.

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company. 

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

I have a few questions about the interior lighting.... The Blue lights down by the foot wells...are they factory or did you do a mod..if so Who, Where, and How...love the look. Second the Telluride lit door sills...done by KIA or are they the aftermarket one's I see at Amazon? All are VERY Nice... It's just your lighting looks much more intense than mine in Dune / Black interior... It might be the Light Grey...that makes it look that way... Thanks In Advance, Mike M.  

Do you find that you actually use the side step bars? I'm 6'3" so I doubt I would, but might be nice for the wife and kids.

I'd also like to know about the lighting! Looks really nice. Are those factory door sills? You like the factory side step bars, I was thinking of finding some black ones to match. I have the same car on order, except with Dune interior. Can't wait!  

It is called interior lighting and illuminated sills and I ordered them with Telly but you can buy them from KIA and install yourself but will take some real work.. I have same set up and color and all but I got black lug nuts instead of stupid KIA choice chrome ones.

Guys - Question- I got a 2021 prestige package with the illuminated interior and illuminated sills a few weeks ago. I guess I just noticed the illuminated sills don't light up. Is there a setting I am missing? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
