Guide: How to Choose the Best Mattress for Back Pain

Last Updated on October 22, 2023

by Marc Werner, Founder - GhostBed

Do you have back pain? Read our comprehensive guide on seeking a pain free night of sleep, along with the best mattress for back pain .

Overview: Best Mattress for Back Pain

The best mattress for back pain is one that offers a balanced blend of contouring memory foam and supportive latex. For those who prefer a firmer feel, the GhostBed Classic is a top choice. Our hybrid (and slightly softer) GhostBed Flex comes in at a close second. For an even better sleep, pair with our adjustable base!

Selecting the Best Mattress for Back Pain

Back pain is a common curse on a large portion of society. Whether lower, upper or both, many suffer with aching in their back. The quest to find the best mattress for back pain is a huge goal for many who are seeking a pain free night of sleep. Remarkably, only eight percent of adults have been found to be back sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper, you might want to view our page: best mattress for side sleeper.

Although many back sleepers like a firm mattress, it is important to have enough softness that will mold to the contours of the body. This allows for the arch of the back to be properly supported as to prevent lower back pain issues. When seeking the best mattress for lower back pain, or for just back pain in general, it is important to think of ergonomics. A mattress designed to properly support the body will promote stability for a healthy posture, as well a peaceful sleep. Memory foams mattresses are a great choice for their combination of firmness and the ability to form to the body.

Tips for Sleeping on Your Back

  • It is important to have your head elevated properly when sleeping on the back. This will help to avert any acid reflux distress. With the head raised, gravity allows for the stomach to sit below the esophagus, keeping any acid from food coming up to the throat to cause discomfort.
  • Make sure all the pressure points in the body are equally supported. You will want a firm mattress that allows the cradling of all points of the body resting on the surface. Consider adding a mattress topper to a very firm mattress, or to top an older bed.
  • Although researchers have found that sleeping on the back is the best for back pain, adding a rolled pillow behind the knees, to assure that your spine lies flat against the mattress, will help to prevent lower back pain.
  • Research shows that sleeping on your back may lead to snoring, difficulty breathing, and an overall bad night’s sleep. Is your snoring keeping someone awake at night? Try flipping over—you’ll both wake up more refreshed.

ghost bed causing back pain

GhostBed Mattress Review

Built with an intriguing mix of aerated latex, gel-infused memory foam, and sturdy high-density poly foam, the Original GhostBed is a cozy option for those in search of both pressure relief and support. But is it the right bed for you? We’re going to find out in this GhostBed mattress review.

We’ll break down everything from how the GhostBed is built to how it feels and much, much more! Plus, I’ll also be including a line-up of all my other GhostBed mattress reviews for your perusal and comparison.

So, without further ado, let’s get into this GhostBed review! You can also click here to skip to the review summary .

GhostBed Mattress

GhostBed Mattress Front

The GhostBed is a medium-firm bed that should suit a variety of sleepers. It uses a combination of latex and gel memory foam for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.

Is the GhostBed a Good Mattress for You?

Before we get started with this review, let’s figure out whether the GhostBed will be a good fit for you. This all-foam mattress is built with layers of latex foam, memory foam, and a high-density foam. Overall it has a medium-firm feel and is quite bouncy and responsive.

Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, the GhostBed may or may not work for you. To help you decide, take a look at some of my recommendations below.

Who I recommend the GhostBed mattress for

  • I really like the GhostBed for hot sleepers . It has a soft and breathable cover, naturally cooling latex, and gel-infused memory foam, so you’re getting quite a bit of airflow and cooling technology in this mattress.
  • I think combination sleepers would be happy on the GhostBed. Its top layer of latex makes for a bouncy and responsive feel that will keep combo sleepers from feeling “stuck” in this bed.
  • I think back sleepers would do well on this mattress. It offered some nice support to help promote a straight spinal alignment, while providing pressure relief at the lower back.

Who I don’t recommend the GhostBed mattress for

  • I don’t think the GhostBed is quite soft enough for strict side sleepers. I’d recommend these folks check out some of our best mattresses for side sleepers .
  • Similarly, I think strict stomach sleepers would find the GhostBed too soft. They need a firm mattress with extra support, like one of our best innerspring mattresses .
  • I think couples who are easily disturbed by a restless partner might not like the GhostBed. It has pretty high motion transfer, which means you’re likely to feel movement from one side of the bed on the other. If you sleep with a partner or pet, I’d recommend checking out our best mattresses for couples .

GhostBed Mattress Review Video

How Firm is the GhostBed Mattress?

So, we’ve discussed some of the basics about the GhostBed, but how exactly does it feel? To find out, I’m going to put this mattress through a few different tests, starting with firmness.

As with any feel factor, firmness level is subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my interpretation of the GhostBed may differ from your own. For reference, I’m 5’10”, 190 lbs., and prefer to sleep on my stomach.

GhostBed Firmness

After rolling around on the GhostBed, I decided to give it a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale . When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this bed is a touch on the firmer side.

The mattress got a 7 from me because I felt as though the predominant feel was one of support and bounce . Though I did get some nice contouring from the middle memory foam layer, I wouldn’t say it curbed very much of the lift I experienced from the latex and high-density poly foam. That being said, I think this bed would probably be best-suited for combination sleepers , particularly those who flip between their back and side in the night.

GhostBed Price and Sizing

Check out our pricing chart below to see how much the GhostBed costs in each size. The GhostBed is a value mattress, and is often included in our Best Mattress Under $1,000 list. Check out our GhostBed mattress coupon page for a nice discount.

Prices listed below will be before discount or offer for each size.

GhostBed Relax

GhostBed Mattress Performance

But firmness isn’t the only factor to consider! So, let’s test out this mattress for a few other performance factors. Take a look below to learn more about how the GhostBed will feel in different sleeping positions, when sharing the bed, and more!

Testing the GhostBed Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions

Depending on your body weight and preferred sleeping position, you’ll have different support needs. Read on below to see how the GhostBed would work for

Is the GhostBed a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lbs)?

  • Light Back Sleepers –  These sleepers should feel really comfortable on the GhostBed, which offers nice bouncy support in this sleeping position.
  • Light Side Sleepers –  These sleepers will likely find the GhostBed too firm. I’d recommend they opt for a bed that offers more pressure-relief at the shoulders and hips.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers –  Light stomach sleepers should like the GhostBed. I think it will offer them the support they need to keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders.

Is the GhostBed a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–250 lbs)?

  • Average-Weight Back Sleepers –  I really liked how the GhostBed felt on my back! The memory foam layer provided plenty of contouring to my lumbar region while the latex and high-density poly foam worked to position me squarely on top of the structure.
  • Average-Weight Side Sleepers –  Though you’ll experience a bit of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, this bed is just a little too firm for long-term side sleeping. If you switch between your back and side, I think you’ll be alright, but otherwise, I’d suggest going for a softer GhostBed model (like the Luxe ).
  • Average–Weight Stomach Sleepers –  This bed is a little too soft for these sleepers. That’s because these folks need extra lift at the hips to support an even spine alignment from the hips all the way to the shoulders.

Is the GhostBed a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lbs)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers –  Heavy back sleepers could like the GhostBed, its latex layer should do a nice job curbing sinkage and keeping them supported throughout the night.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers –- Heavy side sleepers should opt for a different mattress. They’ll sink through this bed’s comfort foams onto its firmer base foams, which could lead to uncomfortable pressure points.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers –  Heavy people won’t get the support they need on the GhostBed when sleeping on their stomach. I’d recommend they opt for an innerspring mattress that offers more support around the hips and lower back.

GhostBed Mattress Pain Relief Performance

Next, let’s chat pain relief. Pain relief is closely tied to a bed’s ability to relieve pressure at the shoulders, hips, and lower back in a range of sleeping positions. To assess this attribute, I like to use a handy dandy pressure map!

Though it may sound a little technical, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this device out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest. As I move around, the gadget records the force exerted by my body, creating a colored “map” of the pressure. For reference, blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.

GhostBed Pressure Relief

Back Pain – These mostly blue pressure maps tell me the GhostBed could be a great choice for sleepers with back pain! It should be able to alleviate tension at the lower back, while offering firm support that helps these sleepers maintain a healthy sleep posture. If you tend to suffer from back pain, you should also take a look at some of our best mattresses for back pain .

Shoulder Pain – The green areas around my shoulders when I was lying on my side tell me this mattress is not a good option for folks with shoulder pain. I’d recommend checking out our best mattress for shoulder pain article for better options.

Hip Pain – Similarly, the green around my hips, plus the firmer feel of this bed, makes me think folks with hip pain might prefer a more pressure-relieving bed.

GhostBed Mattress Performance for Couples

Couples have unique mattress needs including motion isolation, sex performance, cooling, and edge support. Read on below to see how the GhostBed stacks up in these categories, and to learn more about why each is important!

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is the movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. An important factor for all to consider, but especially those who sleep with a child, partner, or rowdy pet!

To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

GhostBed Motion Transfer

These are actually pretty high motion transfer results, which tells me that you’re likely to feel a lot of movement across the bed. If you sleep with a restless partner, this may not be the best mattress for you .

The best mattress for couples usually combines good motion isolation with enough responsiveness to make moving around during sex easy. The GhostBed is definitely responsive enough to be good for sex , but if you’re easily disturbed by a restless bedmate, it might not be the best choice for you.

Couples overheat more quickly than solo sleepers, so they tend to prefer cooling mattresses. Luckily, the GhostBed is very cooling thanks to its latex foam layer, which promotes airflow throughout the mattress.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well supported you’ll feel while laying on the side of the bed. A mattress with great edge support feels larger, which is a perk for couples. In my opinion, the GhostBed has average edge support . This is typical for most all-foam beds, which tend to have less edge support than hybrid or innerspring models.

What is the GhostBed Mattress Made Of?

The GhostBed is built with three layers of latex, memory foam, and high-density poly foam. This combination makes for a unique feel, one that strikes a satisfying balance between pressure relief and support.

For more, let’s dive underneath the cover!

GhostBed

Cover –  Made of a polyester/viscose blend, this cover is soft and breathable .

Comfort Layer –  The top layer you’ll encounter is a 1.5-inch section of aerated latex foam. It’s a bouncy material with a lot of responsiveness that provides excellent mobility for moving around and changing positions. Latex is also naturally cooling , so helps to dissipate body heat throughout the structure. While latex is a fairly common mattress material, I’m intrigued by the aerated twist GhostBed puts on it, which works to encourage even more breathability and cooling. Latex is also a long-lasting material, adding some durability to the mattress.

Contour Layer –  Below the latex layer, you’ll land on one of memory foam. Gel-infused memory foam, to be exact. This distinction is an important one, because it signifies that not only are you getting the deep body-contouring and pressure relief typical of memory foam, but you also get a nice cooling buffer against its overheating tendencies. I also like that the memory foam is positioned underneath the latex layer, which ensures you won’t sink too far into the bed.

Base Layer –  And finally, the base of the bed, comprised here of 7.5 inches of high-density poly foam. This is an ultra-sturdy section that functions mostly as a support foam for the softer foams above it. Since the majority of the mattress is made up of this layer, I suspect it will lend the bed an overall firm feel.

GhostBed Materials

GhostBed Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing

Like any bed-in-a-box mattress, the GhostBed will undergo a 24-48 hour off-gassing and decompression period after you unbox it. I think the GhostBed releases fewer off-gassing odors than most box mattresses, so if you’re particularly worried about smell, this bed could be a good choice for you!

My Final Thoughts About the GhostBed Mattress

You did it! You made it to the end of the review! After breaking down its construction, going over its feel, and even comparing it to some of its mattress siblings, it’s time to decide: Is the GhostBed the new bed for you? I can’t make that decision for you (sorry!), but I can leave you with a few final pros and cons to help you get there on your own.

My favorite things about the GhostBed

Firstly, I really like this bed for back sleepers ! It’s got a soft foam top layer for pressure relief at the lumbar region, but plenty of support for neutral spine alignment. I also think it could be a great choice for folks who need to move around and change positions. There’s some nice mobility here, which helps prevent any sort of “stuck-in-the-bed” feeling. The bed is also a solid value buy. Compared to similar mattresses on the market, I’d consider the GhostBed to be pretty affordable.

My GhostBed Mattress Complaints

Though the GhostBed is fairly gentle, I’d still say the mattress feels too firm for side sleepers who really need to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Additionally, this bed doesn’t have great motion isolation , so may not be the best option for couples.

GhostBed Shipping, Return, Warranty, and Trial

GhostBed vs

Still unsure if the GhostBed is the right new mattress for you? It can be helpful to see how the GhostBed compares to some of its competitors. Below, I’ll compare it to two other models from popular online mattress brands, and let you know how it compares to GhostBed’s other models.

GhostBed vs Casper

  • The Casper is also an all-foam bed and has a similar construction to the GhostBed, though it uses a proprietary Airscape™ foam, which has a similar feel to latex.
  • The Casper performed a bit better on our motion transfer test, which could make it a better option for couples .
  • The Casper is a bit cheaper than the GhostBed.
  • Learn more in my full Casper mattress review. You can also check out my full GhostBed vs Casper mattress comparison .

GhostBed vs Leesa

  • The Leesa is another all-foam bed, though it uses a proprietary breathable foam layer where the GhostBed uses a latex layer.

Side sleeping, other models from ghostbed.

As I mentioned up top, the Original GhostBed is just one of several mattresses sold by the brand. So, allow me to introduce you to some of its mattress siblings:

GhostBed Luxe

  • Like the Original GhostBed, the GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam bed-in-a-box. However, it has a softer, more luxurious feel .
  • It’s also designed with cooling in mind, so could be a nice option for folks who overheat in the night.
  • Since it’s gentler than the Original GhostBed, it could work wonders for side sleepers in need of deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
  • For more, check out my full GhostBed Luxe mattress review .

GhostBed Luxe Mattress

ghostbed luxe mattress

Designed with cooling in mind, the GhostBed Luxe is fantastic for those who sleep hot at night. It’s made with a gel-foam layer, which is cooler than traditional memory foam, but still offers great sinkage and relief for side sleepers.

Medium-firm: 6.5/10

25-year warranty, ghostbed flex.

  • The GhostBed Flex is a hybrid mattress , so combines gentle foams with sturdy coils for bouncy yet pressure-relieving structure.
  • In general, I’d recommend the Flex for combo sleepers who like to switch between their back and side while they snooze.
  • It also did well on my motion transfer test, so could be a nice choice for couples!
  • Read more at my full GhostBed Flex mattress review .

GhostBed Flex Mattress

GhostBed Flex Cover

The GhostBed Flex uses a combination of soft memory foam and bouncy coils to provide nice pressure relief without the feeling of being stuck in the mattress. The GhostBed Flex also uses high-tech materials to help you sleep cool throughout the night.

Soft: 5.5/10

Ghostbed 3d matrix.

  • Like the Flex, the GhostBed 3D Matrix is also a hybrid mattress . However, it’s got more of a medium firm feel that could be great for combo sleepers.
  • The Matrix is also incredibly bouncy , so might be a nice option for those in search of fantastic mobility.
  • And if cooling is an important factor for you, you’ll be happy to know the Matrix sleeps super cool thanks to its cooling cover and gel memory foam comfort layer.

Our Review Process

At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.

Is the GhostBed Mattress Good For Back Pain?

Derek Hales

Written by: Derek Hales

Published On: April 25, 2023

Yes, most GhostBed mattresses are good for sleepers with back pain, but our top recommendation would be the GhostBed Flex .

Sleepers who suffer from back pain are generally going to need two things:

Firmness + Support

The exact cause of back pain may vary between sleepers, but one of the most common causes is when the spine in not properly aligned.

Selecting a mattress that maintains proper alignment of your spine, pelvis, and neck can help to reduce the risk of back pain.

Ghostbed Flex edge support - back sleeping

Concerning firmness, the GhostBed Flex is slightly firmer than the GhostBed Classic and GhostBed Luxe. This gives the advantage to the GhostBed Flex since firmness helps to maintain that spinal alignment I mentioned above.

In addition, the GhostBed Classic and GhostBed Luxe are both foam mattresses— the Flex is the only hybrid mattress. Hybrid mattresses typically provide exceptional support and are a solid pick for sleepers with back pain.

Is Your Bed Causing Back Pain? Try This Bed Instead!

Is Your Bed Causing Back Pain? Try This Bed Instead!

One of the main reasons that many people shop for a new bed is because their current one is uncomfortable and causing them pain. Is your bed causing back pain? If so, it might be time to start looking for a new mattress, and don’t wait around for over ten years like I did thinking I could squeeze just ‘one more year’ out of the old decrepit thing we had.

Pushing Your Mattress to the Limits

It may go without saying, but waiting over ten years to replace a worn out bed causing back pain is not a good idea . We even tried to extend the life of our mattress a little longer by buying one of those memory foam toppers thinking that it would buy us some time.

All the topper really did though was to make our bed more squishy. It was still sagging on each side and had the infamous ‘king’s ridge’ in the middle. It was still not that comfortable and was still a bed causing back pain.

Skip the ‘quick-fix’ remedies. Don’t try to streeeetch the life of your mattress, and make sure you get a bed that is actually going to be worth it!

Click here to buy the best mattress we’ve found and get $50 off at checkout automatically!

Buy The Ghostbed!

A Good Night’s Sleep Doesn’t Have to Cost a Lot!

A quick shop around the web will show you just how many options there are out there for a new mattress, and just how pricey those options can be. But there is an option, a really good option, that is not only extremely comfortable, supportive, and everything you’d want in a bed — but it is also affordable !

The Ghostbed was crafted out of 15 years of research, design & development, and comes with many advanced features. You won’t believe the supernatural comfort you get for the amazing price of this bed! You won’t have a bed causing back pain after using the Ghostbed (they guarantee it with a 101-night risk-free sleep trial)!

ghostbed no more bed causing back pain

So What Makes the Ghostbed  So Good?

They say that it is the combination of many different densities and thicknesses of foam, a gel layer that keeps you just the right temperature, and the handcrafted American artistry in making the ultra soft plush cover. I don’t know what the reason is, but I can say that we absolutely loved this mattress from the moment we took it out of the box!

Speaking of…. check out our unboxing video, this bed comes all vacuum sealed and is ready to be slept on from the moment you open it! I didn’t even notice any lingering smells so it truly was ready to go right out of the box.

Do You Have a Bed Causing Back Pain?

So before I continue with the glowing reviews, let me tell you about the bed(s) that we previously had. The one we’ve been sleeping on for the past ten years was a Euro top spring mattress. While it worked well for the first few years, it quickly broke down and should have been replaced long ago.

My mother had also given us a different type of memory foam bed at one point, which is now in our guest area, however, neither my husband nor I enjoy sleeping on that bed. It is way too firm for either of us, and the pressure points in my hips surely feel it when I try to lay on my side. I have not noticed that problem at all with the Ghostbed.

Ghostbed Mattress Review

ghostbed

All I can tell you is that my husband and I had very low expectations for this bed after our last memory foam bed (the one from my mom). We took the Ghostbed out of the box, set it up on the boxspring, and proceeded to test it out by lying down on it.

After a few moments, we both looked at each other at about the same time. It was sort of unreal that we were both thinking the same thing. I can remember my husband going, “wow, I’m actually impressed!”

All I could say was, “yeah, me too. I really didn’t think I was going to like this bed, but it is…. comfortable.” And then we just laid there for a bit relaxing in the comfiness of our new bed and excited that we wouldn’t have to get rid of it and try to find a new one all over again.

Of course, that was simply our first impression, but there is something to be said about those first impressions. After trying out the Ghostbed for a few weeks now, I can honestly say that it is still really comfortable, my back has had no problems, I have no pressure point issues in my hips or elsewhere, and I’m sleeping like a dream!

One of the things that I really like is that when you lay down on this bed you don’t feel like you are sinking into it . It is just the right amount of support, yet still soft enough to be comfortable.

Additional Features of Ghostbed

While the inside has some superb features like the aerated foam layer and the gel foam layer (which you can read more about here ), the outside is pretty great too. The cover has strechability and a plush feel, but best of all — it is washable with an easy to zip off cover!

ghostbed zipper

Another great feature is that you might find some supernatural comfort, aka, some ghosts inhabiting your bed from time to time. I’ve found one or two in my bed on occasion. 🙂

Bonus – Foundation Assembly

If you decide to purchase the matching foundation, note that it is really simple to assemble. I did this myself with minimal help from my 8yr old son. The holes in the slats are pre-drilled, and all your components are included. Once assembled, the cover slips over easily and your bed is ready to be placed on top!

GhostBed Mattress Topper Review

I’ll examine the GhostBed memory foam mattress topper and explain its firmness, feel, cooling features, price point and more.

If you love the feeling of slow-moving memory foam, the GhostBed topper might be a good choice for you. This mattress topper, made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam, is not only high quality—it offers lots of pressure relief, too.

That said, this topper may not meet everyone’s sleep needs. I personally tested the GhostBed mattress topper and assessed its comfort, pressure relief, ease of use, price point and more. Read my full GhostBed mattress topper review for the full scoop.

GhostBed Memory Foam Topper

GhostBed Memory Foam Topper

The GhostBed topper is a good option for side sleepers who need to soften their mattress.

GhostBed Mattress Topper Overview

GhostBed sells a wide variety of sleep products, including the original GhostBed mattress and GhostBed weighted blanket . The GhostBed topper is made with 3” of plush memory foam that helps make mattresses feel softer. But will this product work for you? Check out my handy chart to learn more:

GhostBed Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Mattress Clarity’s firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard for medium-firm. When we test mattress toppers, we don’t assess the product’s firmness level on its own. Instead, we measure how much it changes the firmness and feel of an existing mattress.

What’s the GhostBed Topper’s Firmness?

The GhostBed mattress topper feels quite plush. When I placed it on top of a medium-firm mattress (6.5/10 on our firmness scale), it made the bed feel 1.5 points softer. The Ghostbed topper could be beneficial for people who rest on particularly firm mattresses, but if you need more support, you may want to consider getting one of the best firm mattress toppers .

What does the GhostBed Topper Feel Like?

The GhostBed mattress topper has a traditional slow-moving memory foam feel. When I rested on top of it, I felt my body sink into the thick foam layer. It’s a bit difficult to move around on top of this mattress topper, so if you prefer a more responsive feel, you may want to get the Saatva latex mattress topper instead.

ghost bed causing back pain

Sleeping on the GhostBed Topper

When I rested on my back, the GhostBed mattress topper conformed to my hips and hugged my lower back. Because I placed this topper on a medium-firm mattress, I didn’t get the spinal support that I needed. If you place this topper on a firmer mattress, it could be a good match for most back sleepers.

The GhostBed mattress topper works really well for side sleepers. The thick 3” layer of memory foam cushions shoulders and hips and offers plenty of pressure relief.

I wouldn’t recommend this topper for stomach sleepers. This plush topper will soften your mattress by 1.5 points, which could cause your hips to sink out of alignment when you’re on your stomach. This can lead to lower back pain over time. For some better options, take a look at our list of the best mattress toppers for stomach sleepers .

30-60 Min Nap

One of the perks of being a professional mattress and accessories tester is that I get to take naps on all of the products I review. I’m a combination sleeper, so when I slept on the GhostBed topper, I switched between my back and my side. I woke up once when I was on my back because I felt like the foam was a little too soft and I needed more support. When I rested on my side, I felt very comfortable.

The thick foam layers cradled my pressure points and didn’t create any joint pain. It was a bit difficult for me to switch sleeping positions because the thick foam has a slow-moving feel. If you want something that feels more responsive, you may want to consider the Avocado Latex mattress topper .

ghost bed causing back pain

Even though the Ghostbed topper has a cooling cover and gel-infused memory foam, I still felt a little hot and stuffy during my nap. I sank into the 3” foam layer quite a bit, which trapped some body heat. If you’re a particularly hot sleeper, like myself, you may want to take a look at our list of the best cooling mattress toppers .

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The GhostBed topper works well for most average weight back and side sleepers, especially if they currently rest on a firm mattress. The thick foam layer offers an extra boost of pressure relief, which could be beneficial for people who rest in these sleeping positions.

This topper isn’t a great choice for average weight stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, people will likely feel their hips sink out of alignment. This can put extra pressure on the lower back and cause pain down the line.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavier people will compress the GhostBed topper quite a bit, so it may not feel as soft to people in this weight category. For that reason, the GhostBed topper could work well for back and side sleepers who weigh more than 230 lb. However, if you need a significant amount of pressure relief, you may want to get a topper that’s more dense, like the Saatva graphite .

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Lightweight back and side sleepers should feel comfortable on the ghostbed mattress topper, if they currently rest on a firm mattress. lightweight stomach sleepers will need a thinner topper, such as the helix . the ghostbed topper is too plush for stomach sleeping and could cause back pain. , ghostbed topper construction.

Now, let’s see what this topper is made out of. Here’s a closer look at its construction:

Cover

The GhostBed topper comes with a machine-washable cover that stretches over the entire mattress. The outer fabric is waterproof, and it has a 2” elastic band around the corners. When I placed the cover over the topper and the mattress and rolled around on top of the bed a few times, I was happy to see that the cover and topper stayed firmly in place.

GhostBed Topper Cover

Comfort Layer

The topper itself is made from a 3” layer of memory foam. The topper has five zones with different textures and patterns. This is meant to offer targeted support where sleepers need it most. I could feel a difference between the sections when I rested on the topper itself, but when I placed the cover around it, the sections felt more subtle.

GhostBed Topper

The memory foam is infused with gel, which is meant to help dissipate body heat. In my experience, the gel infusion isn’t particularly helpful. If you tend to run hot at night, you may want to look elsewhere.

One perk about the GhostBed topper is that it’s CertiPUR-US® certified, which means it’s made without the use of harmful chemicals.

Topper Height

The GhostBed mattress topper is 3” tall.

GhostBed Topper Size Options & Price Chart

Take a look at our chart below to learn more about the topper’s price points and size options. Note: Prices do not include discounts.

GhostBed Topper Performance

I don’t just take naps on the products I review—I also run them through a number of tests to assess cooling, durability and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Even though the GhostBed topper is marketed as a cooling product, I wouldn’t recommend it for people who run hot at night. The gel-infusion doesn’t dissipate body heat as well as many other toppers I’ve tried, and because it’s made with a thick piece of memory foam, sleepers will sink into the material and trap body heat around them.

If you keep the cover around the topper at all times, as the product is intended, I expect the GhostBed topper to last about three years. Please note: If you decide to sleep directly on top of the foam, you might tear the material.

Off-Gassing

“Off-gassing” is the mattress industry term for the chemical smell often emitted after unboxing a bed-in-a-box mattress. Because the GhostBed topper is also compressed into a cardboard box, it does have a short off-gassing period. It took about two days for the smell to fade away.

The outer cover is machine-washable. For the best results, wash it on the gentle cycle in cool water. You can tumble dry it on low.

The topper itself can be spot cleaned with warm water and mild detergent, but it should not be completely submerged in water.

The GhostBed topper’s cover is hypoallergenic, so as long as you use the product as intended, it should not trigger an allergic reaction.

Company Policies

It’s always a good idea to understand the company policies before buying a new bedding product. Here’s what you can expect if you order from GhostBed:

The GhostBed mattress topper is backed by a five-year warranty .

Sleep Trial

GhostBed does not offer sleep trial periods for their accessories, including the GhostBed topper.

Return Policy

The GhostBed mattress topper is not returnable.

Overall Rating

Take a look at our Mattress Clarity score for the GhostBed topper.

How Does the GhostBed Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

There are so many options when it comes to mattress toppers. Before making a final purchasing decision, it’s important to see how the GhostBed topper compares to others.

GhostBed vs Saatva

Saatva makes one of the most luxurious mattress toppers on the market. There are several different options to choose from, including the latex topper and micro coil topper. For this comparison, I’ll focus specifically on the Saatva graphite. This topper fuses memory foam and graphite, which helps keep sleepers cool at night. It has an organic cotton cover and it softens mattresses by 2.5 points .

Saatva mattress topper

While the GhostBed topper has a removable and machine-washable cover, the Saatva graphite does not. However, the Saatva graphite contains high-quality materials and strong corner straps, so I expect it to last longer than the GhostBed topper.

Read our full Saatva mattress topper review .

GhostBed vs Nolah

Instead of traditional memory foam, the Nolah mattress topper contains AirFoam. This responsive material is special to Nolah, and it has tiny air holes throughout that makes it feel particularly breathable and cool.

A man rests on his back while on top of the Nolah Mattress Topper.

The Nolah mattress topper is available in two firmness levels: Plush and Luxury Fim. I tested the Plush version and found that it softens mattresses by two points . If you’re a hot sleeper who needs a bit more pressure relief, the Nolah topper might be the best option.

Read our full Nolah mattress topper review .

Like many things in the bedding industry, “best” is subjective. If you’re a hot sleeper, you may need a cooling mattress topper . Stomach sleepers will need more support and should consider getting a firm mattress topper .

Because the GhostBed topper is made with thick memory foam and a durable cover, I expect it to last about three years. This is about one year longer than most budget-friendly mattress toppers.

The GhostBed mattress topper is not returnable, so if you don’t like it, you may need to donate it or throw it away.

GhostBed Luxe

The GhostBed Luxe is considered a mixed-foam mattress. The bed features a cover infused with cooling fibers and padded with an inch of memory foam, giving the surface ample cushioning. The mattress also contains a comfort layer of gel-infused memory foam, a transitional layer of responsive “Ghost Bounce” poly foam, and a support core of high-density poly foam. Altogether, the mattress measures 13 inches thick, which is considered a higher-than-aver

GhostBed Luxe customer reviews

Sturdy and Easy to Assemble 5/5

We recently arrived in Canada and needed a bed. GhostBed was easy to order on line, it arrived ahead of scheduled delivery date and was easy to assemble. The base is strong and sturdy.

Great Bundle 5/5

Love the 3D matrix. Took mine about a week to fully settle but once it did it has easily been the most comfortable bed I’ve owned. Cooling is a little less than I expected, but I do have the protector and a fitted sheet on which might explain it. The frame is a more difficult than a regular cheap frame to assemble, but once it’s done is strong and lightweight, and looks clean with the cover. Designed for easy movement as well. Sheets are sheets, but they feel soft, thick and good quality. The pillows feel like a solid light memory foam that’s easy to flip or adjust as needed. Pillows do have an odd scent that’s not unpleasant, but I wasn’t expecting it. At first I thought it was a new factory smell, but it’s still around and read it’s a flower smell meant to aid in rest or sleep or something. Overall I’m very happy with the purchase, and the full bundle I got is the way to go, as individually I would’ve spent close to a grand more

I Love My New Mattress! 5/5

I love my new mattress, very comfortable. I’m getting better sleep than I have had in years.

Tired Nurse Loves her Ghost Bed 5/5

Finally made my move after researching similar mattresses for months. I couldn’t be happier with my mattress and sheets. I’m an ER nurse in a Covid hot spot and regularly work 13+ hour shifts on my feet. Good sleep has been absolutely vital to my mental and physical health and this bed has been my literal haven during the nightmare that is 2020. Shipping was fast, assembly was easy, and the mattress is extremely comfortable. It has really done wonders for my lower back aches and pains. The comfort bundle I purchased came at a fantastic price point compared to the other brands I looked at and is made in the USA. Doesn’t get much better than that.

The GhostBed Luxe Off-Gassing

All mattresses release odors when new, but beds with memory foam layers tend to be the worst offenders. The GhostBed is no exception. Expect strong off-gassing smells for a bit after you remove the mattress from its shipping box. These odors may take up to a week to fully dissipate. Even then, the foam may continue to emit a faint yet noticeable chemical smell.

The GhostBed Luxe’s construction plays a role in its odor retention. Without any layers that promote airflow, the mattress cannot flush out bothersome smells quite as well as a hybrid, innerspring, or latex bed. If you are sensitive to smells, try placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a few days before sleeping on it.

Firmness and Feel:

My thoughts.

The GhostBed Luxe conforms closely to your body and evenly distributes your weight, supports your spines and helps elevate pressure. We love how the memory foam is has cooling gel to resist heat absorption. The 2- inch “Ghost Bounce” poly foam helped prevent me from sinking too deeply into the mattress and helped me feel supported. The third layer, the 7.5- inch support core helps keep your body on an even plane. I think this mattress isolates motion very well, and as a result you and your partner should experience few sleep disruptions. Being this mattress is memory foam, I think it also absorbs movement better than latex or poly foam.

Temperature:

The GhostBed Luxe is equipped with certain components that allow the mattress to sleep much cooler than many of its all-foam competitors. The “Ghost Ice” cover is woven with breathable viscose fibers, while the PCM layer regulates the surface temperature to keep the mattress comfortable – even if your body temperature is up.

Heat retention is a common issue for all-foam beds. Memory foam and polyfoam absorb and trap warmth more than latex and other mattress materials, which can make you feel excessively hot. The GhostBed Luxe is a notable exception to this rule, and a great option if you’ve had bad luck with other foam mattresses.

However, we should point out that people who weigh more than 230 pounds may feel a bit warmer than lighter individuals. This is due to the GhostBed Luxe’s medium feel. As they sink into the mattress, these sleepers may feel less surface airflow and become a bit too warm.

GhostBed Adjustable Base Performance:

GhostBed offers an Adjustable base to fit the Luxe Mattress that helps soothe chronic neck and back pain. The base adjusts to your bed to your preferences with the touch of a button. Features dual-acting massage settings and easily raises head and/or feet to alleviate acid reflux, heartburn and GERD.

GhostBed Luxe with our Discount Link & Coupon Code:

Ghostbed luxe warranty and more.

The GhostBed Luxe comes with a 101-night sleep trial. The trial includes a mandatory break-in period; GhostBed will not honor returns until you’ve tested out the mattress for at least 30 nights. If the mattress is returned between the 31st and 101st night, you’ll receive a full product refund and GhostBed will send couriers to pick up the bed from your residence. Exchanges for other GhostBed models are also available during the sleep trial.

Please note that all mattress sales to customers in Alaska and Hawaii are final once they are processed, so a sleep trial will not be available to these individuals. Additionally, customers who purchase their mattress on Amazon.com or with a Groupon voucher will not qualify for the sleep trial.

The GhostBed Luxe is backed by a 25-year warranty. This warranty is partially prorated. During the first 10 years, GhostBed will cover all repair and replacement costs if your mattress develops a defect – though you’ll need to pay to-and-from transportation fees. Beginning in the 11th year, you’ll pay 50 percent of the original mattress price to have your Luxe model replaced. This percentage will annually increase by 5 percent in years 12-15; 4 percent in years 16-20; and 1 percent in years 20-25.

Sagging or body impressions in the mattress surface are considered defects if they measure 1 inch or deeper. The warranty also covers physical flaws in the mattress that cause materials to split or crack. Other issues, such as physical damage or standard wear and tear, are not covered under this warranty.

GhostBed Company Info

GhostBed CEO Marc Werners desire to create the perfect mattress stemmed from his own personal experience. After three neck surgeries, he knew what it was like to live and sleep in constant pain.

So when he was unable to find a comfortable pillow and mattress to support his neck and back, he decided to invent his own. That’s when he founded Nature’s Sleep.

Werner knew that mattress shopping can be a real nightmare. With so many mattresses to choose from and less-than-helpful salespeople who stand over you during those quick 10-second “sleep tests” in the showroom, it can be confusing and frustrating. You feel pressured to make the right decision but you have absolutely no idea which mattress you should choose. He knew a more efficient, and more beneficial, means of mattress shopping would be to skip the showroom altogether and go direct to consumer with one mattress at one great price, with the convenience of purchasing right from your home.

We recommend this bed for couples, the GhostBed prevents motion transfer across the mattress and features strong edges which allow couples to use the full surface of the bed. Side-sleeper will love this bed with it’s medium feel whereas the GhostBed Luxe provides ample cushioning to prevent pressure build-ip in hips and shoulders when sleeping on your side. Lastly, this we recommend the GhostBed Luxe for people who also sleep hot. Phase-changing materials and fiber padding enhance breathability and draw heat away from the sleeper, placing this mattress among one of the coolest foam mattresses.
