Chasing Ghosts Review
by Neil Z. Yeung
Recentering themselves over two decades after 2001's excellent but misunderstood self-titled LP, '90s alt-metal survivors Stabbing Westward revive their peak industrial-goth sound to maximum effect on the long-awaited Chasing Ghosts. Following that most recent full-length, this returns the band to the quintessential sound of their heyday: corrosive mechanizations set to driving beats and urgent delivery of scathing, self-flagellating lyrics. For this iteration of Stabbing Westward, Orgy alumni Carlton Bost (guitars) and Bobby Amaro (drums) join founding members vocalist/guitarist Christopher Hall and programmer Walter Flakus . With early producer John Fryer in tow, this is the album that fans were likely expecting as a follow-up to 1998's Darkest Days . Exploding to life with the cacophonous "I Am Nothing," everything from the downcast lyrics, desperate delivery, and crunching sonics ticks off all the boxes on the checklist (without falling into nostalgic retread territory), transporting listeners back to a time when Gravity Kills was still a thing and Nine Inch Nails were writing a follow-up to The Downward Spiral . "Dead and Gone" and "Wasteland" have the same potent effect. As the former bashes and bleeds its way over a pogo-drum assault and clanking breakdown, the latter track is a no-frills storm of discordant guitars and muscular drumming fit for a post-apocalyptic hellscape. "Cold" is anything but, a throbbing merger of early NIN and Depeche Mode that, at times, sounds eerily familiar to a song Bost and Amaro should be familiar with: Orgy's take on "Blue Monday." "Damaged Goods" lays a thick pulse over borderline-sensual deep breathing (think Pretty Hate Machine ), before a distraught Hall screams, "Don't try to save me" atop a chaotic riff breakdown. Of these classic industrial anthems, "Control Z" is an absolute standout earworm that might have been a radio smash in another era. With shimmering new wave gloss and a buzzing underbelly, it manages to find the Venn diagram sweet spot between anyone who has ever felt regret in a relationship and those familiar with keyboard shortcuts. Amongst the rage and aggression, Chasing Ghosts also features a handful of restrained and thoughtful midtempo cuts aimed at the heartstrings and tear ducts. While "Crawl" and "Ghost" put Hall 's heart on his sleeve -- a pair of anguished slow burns for the self-titled fans -- the seven-minute epics "Push" and "The End" imagine a reality where the Cure were the ones who recorded Wither Blister Burn & Peel . Of this quartet of mosh-pit breaks, "Push" is a centerpiece statement, swirling through the ether of a beautiful synth expanse that finds Hall at his most heartbroken and earnest. Altogether, Chasing Ghosts is Stabbing Westward's most focused and potent statement to date, an unexpected feat that arrived decades later than expected. It's what fans have been waiting for for over 20 years.

About Stabbing Westward
Blending the scathing electronics of underground industrial/rock with thee motive melodies of goth and a decidedly radio-friendly sensibility, Stabbing Westward rose to great heights in the mid-‘90s alternative boom. Formed in 1986 by Walter Flakus and Christopher Hall, the band went from underground cult sensation to the heights of critical and commercial success thanks to such songs as “Shame,” “Save Yourself,” “So Far Away”and “What Do I Have to Do?”. To this day, these songs remain anthems of heartache, dejection, rage, betrayal and depression. With two Gold albums and numerous hit singles, Stabbing Westward fell from grace with the 2001 self-titled album amid personal and professional turmoil, disbanding the following year and leaving a void in modern music that was somewhat filled by Hall’s later work in The Dreaming. However, it was their lease of that band’s Rise Again in 2015 that the seeds were sown for a reunion. That album saw Flakus once again making music with Hall, with Stabbing Westward guitarist Mark Eliopulos joining The Dreaming onstage in Chicago for a set of past hits. In 2019, Hall and Flakus came together again to release the Dead And Gone EP, the first new Stabbing Westward material in 18 years. Written and produced by Flakus and Hall over the course of three years, and recorded in multiple states and time zones, these new songs capture the very essence of the Stabbing Westward sound. Adding longtime band mate Carlton Bost (Orgy, Deadsy, The Dreaming) and new drummer Bobby Amaro (Orgy) to the official lineup, the band has also once again recruited the talent of producer John Fryer—instrumental on early albums “Ungod” and “Wither Blister Burn +Peel”—for a new album, Chasing Ghosts to be released in early 2022 through a new partnership with COP International.

Stabbing Westward Return With ‘Chasing Ghosts’, the Band’s First New LP in 20 Years!
It’s been 20 years since Chicago-based industrial rock band Stabbing Westward released their self-titled LP that led to their eventual breakup and forming of The Dreaming (if you enjoy Stabbing Westward, there are some fantastic songs in their discography).
In 2015, frontman Christopher Hall reformed the band, which began touring to celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary, which eventually led to the release of a (very hard to get) new song on the Cold Waves VI compilation back in 2017.
Then, out of nowhere, the band returned with their first proper release in two decades, the three-song EP Dead & Gone , the first official new music since 2001.
Now, as promised, Stabbing Westward are officially back with their first full-length LP in 20 years, Chasing Ghosts , which is set to drop on March 18, 2022 , via COP International Records. The album features 10 tracks that have the industrial rock band’s characteristic sound with a modern sheen that picks up right where they left off.
Oh, and did I mention that the band got back together with their original producer ( John Fryer ; Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, 4AD, Cocteau Twins) and masterer ( Tom Baker ) so it really brings back that chemistry that made them big ’90s mainstays?! Fuck yeah.
In celebration of the news, Stabbing Westward gives a taste of the upcoming material by sharing the album’s first single, “I Am Nothing” , alongside the following lyric video. A number of limited-edition physical copies of the single are available for sale on Bandcamp .
The album, featuring artwork by David Seidman (an artist who has also worked with Coheed and Cambria and is known for his ethereal and surrealistic imagery) will be available in digital, CD and vinyl formats, with full details and exclusive, limited-edition merch to be announced soon.

Italian Horror Classic ‘Demons’ Resurrected With a Live Performance from Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin [Event Report]
“Tonight we have special news for you: we closed all the exits. You can’t escape,” Claudio Simonetti deadpanned in his Italian accent to the enthusiastic crowd at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 3. Clad in something like a ringmaster jacket over a Deadpool T-shirt, a smile beamed across the maestro’s face.
The audience erupted into laughter chased by cheers, as they knew they were about to experience something special: the 1985 cult classic Demons on the big screen with a live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin , a modern tribute to the prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin fronted by the founding keyboardist.
Produced by Italian master of horror Dario Argento — for whom Goblin had previously composed several scores — Demons is directed by Lamberto Bava from a script written by Bava, Argento, Dardano Sacchetti ( The Beyond ), and Franco Ferrini ( Phenomena ). The plot finds attendees at a mysterious horror film screening trapped in a theater with ravenous, slime-spewing demons.

An 88-minute distillation of 1980s flamboyance, Demons is a perfect entry point into Italian horror for western audiences. It’s relentlessly paced with gnarly special effects, a colorful ensemble, and an outrageous finale that includes a motorcycle, a samurai sword, and a helicopter crash. Of course, Simonetti’s score is also a contributing factor to its efficacy.
Hearing Simonetti and his bandmates — guitarist Daniele Amador , bassist Cecilia Nappo , and drummer Federico Maragoni — accompany the film live added to the high-octane experience. While the live Suspiria score they toured last year was tweaked with a more modern sound, Demons remained largely faithful to Simonetti’s original score, albeit with a fuller sound from transposing the electronics to real instruments.
Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin also played along to some of the heavy metal songs featured on the soundtrack. They extracted Biff Byford’s vocals to accompany them on their rendition of Saxon’s “Everybody Up,” and they replaced Accept’s “Fast as a Shark” with a cover of Iron Maiden’s “Flash of the Blade” featuring Bruce Dickinson’s vocals; a curious substitution, but it sounded good and the song appears in Argento’s Phenomena , so it fit the theme.

The live score alone was worth the price of admission, but the group followed it up with a 75-minute set of classic Goblin and Simonetti material along with some surprises. They opened with a few deep cuts — themes from Cut and Run and The Card Player as well as Goblin non-soundtrack song “E suono rock” — before launching into three tracks from Dawn of the Dead in tribute to George A. Romero.
In the middle of the set, Simonetti introduced special arrangements of songs from two of his favorite horror movies: Halloween and The Exorcist . The band put their spin on John Carpenter’s iconic theme, which seamlessly flowed into Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” while clips from the respective films play on the screen behind them.
They went on to play two cuts from Suspiria (“Suspiria” and “Markos”) and title themes from Opera (with a guitar solo by Amador), Tenebrae , and Phenomena (with a piano intro by Simonetti) before bringing the evening to a close with the Deep Red theme “Profondo Rosso.”
Simonetti informed me that, unlike Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead , and Deep Red , there are no plans to re-record the Demons score. That means the only way to get the full-band experience is by attending the tour , so don’t miss Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin turning cities into tombs across the country.
