10 Fun Facts About Horses

Humans have been riding horses and using them for work for millennia. These majestic creatures are associated with qualities of intelligence, independence and a free spirit. Get to know these animals better with these 10 fun facts about horses.

Horses Are Found All Over the World

Scientists believe that horses originated in North America, then spread to Asia and Europe. Due to domestication, horses can be found living on all continents except Antarctica. Horses in North America became extinct over 10,000 years ago, but were then reintroduced by Europeans. The only truly wild horses in existence today reside in Mongolia.

Horses Make Dozens of Sounds to Communicate

Most people correlate neighing and whinnying with horses. While horses do make these sounds, they also make dozens of other sounds and facial gestures to communicate their feelings. Horses snort to communicate danger, and stallions roar when making mating calls.

Horses Use Their Ears to “See”

While horses can’t see through their ears, their ears do often give you an idea of which direction they’re looking. A horse’s ear will point in the direction that the eye on the same side is looking. In some instances, the ear points in a different direction, and this means that the horse is looking in two different directions at once.

Horses Can Sleep Standing Up

It’s a common misconception that horses never lie down unless something is wrong. While horses do have the ability to sleep standing up, they lie down and even roll around at times. A herd of horses will never lie down all at once, though. One horse always remains standing to look out for potential danger.

Horses Live Up to 25 Years

Domesticated horses have a lifespan of about 25 years. Some live shorter and others longer. The oldest living horse on record was 62 years old when it died. Ponies — often mistaken for baby horses — live twice as long, for an average lifespan of 50 years.

Horses Are Incredibly Smart

Horses are highly intelligent animals. They can learn a variety of tasks and commands. They’re even capable of solving cognitive challenges that involve categorization and other tasks. Horses are commonly used as service and therapy animals, helping with a wide range of mental health issues and disabilities.

Horses Can Stand Right After Birth

Unlike human babies, which don’t take their first steps until around one year of age, horses stand up shortly after birth. Within three to five hours, baby horses can run around.

Horses Can See Almost 360 Degrees

Horses have eyes on the sides of their heads, which makes it easy for them to see nearly all the way around them. However, the position of their eyes makes it hard for them to see directly in front of them, and they also have a blind spot behind them. That’s why it’s dangerous to stand behind a horse. Since they can’t see you, they’re likely to become startled and kick you.

Horses Can Be Both Big and Small

There are more than 400 breeds of horses that come in a wide range of sizes. The largest horses weight more than a ton, whereas the smallest ones weigh as little as 120 pounds. Ponies are the smallest breeds of horses. Any adult horse that measures less than 56 inches tall is classified as a pony.

Horses Are not Naturally Territorial

Horses in the wild do not exhibit territorial behavior, whereas domesticated horses tend to be a bit more protective of their favorite stalls or pastures. In the wild, stallions fight with each other over female horses, but rarely engage in aggressive behavior to defend their territories.

Some of the best anime of all time deal with ghosts and spirits, naturally leading many fans to wonder what the best supernatural anime are.

With spirits playing such a prominent role in Japanese culture, it's no wonder that many fans want to know what the best anime about ghosts are. The supernatural occupies a popular spot in pop culture for good reason. Audiences love to explore the world of the occult, whether to get some good, old-fashioned scares or out of genuine interest. Whatever the reason, ghosts and spirits are never far away from the entertainment industry.

Some of the most iconic anime in history deal with the supernatural. Stories like Death Note and Jujutsu Kaisen take audiences into the dangerous world of the supernatural in a way that's both fun and easily accessible. Sometimes the ghosts are friendly allies in the protagonist's battle; other times, they are the cruelest of villains, but that's what makes them fascinating. The best anime about ghosts show how truly diverse stories about the restless dead can be.

Ghost Stories

Absolutely iconic in the early days of anime fandom, Ghost Stories remains popular today. The plot concerns a group of schoolchildren who, with the help of a demon trapped inside a cat, encounter numerous ghosts throughout their town and use a book to exorcise them. Ghost Stories works as a familiar child adventure and a subtle commentary on urbanization and the disregard for traditions. What made the series so iconic though was its irreverent dub, which absolutely skewered and mocked the series. The anime became successful in Western territories after this official parody dub was released, with fans and critics praising its dark humor and animation. Today, many consider Ghost Stories a cult classic and one of the best examples of ghosts in anime.

Yu Yu Hakusho

Though Yu Yu Hakusho might appear to casual viewers as another typical shonen battle series, its supernatural themes make it a perfect anime for any fan who wants a little action with their ghosts. The story follows a young man named Yusuke who tragically loses his life to save a child. Fortunately for Yusuke, this last act of heroism bought him some favor with the spirit world, eventually leading him to returning to life. While Yusuke's time as a spirit detective is short-lived, Yu Yu Hakusho still deals with all kinds of supernatural threats, making it a perfect introductory ghost anime.

Light is one of the most complicated and fascinating protagonists in anime, balancing his newfound responsibility with his connection to the worlds of humans and the supernatural.

Pokémon

While Pokémon might not feature ghosts or spirits every episode, it offers more than a few episodes based around the supernatural. More so than most other anime, Pokémon offers a family-friendly way for younger fans of anime to engage with ghosts and even some light horror without having to worry about seeing anything too horrific or gruesome. Particularly strong ghost episodes include episode 20 The Ghost of Maiden's Peak, episode 23 Tower of Terror, and Black & White episode 26 Scare at Litwick Mansion , though even that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls lives up to its creepy title. As a Soul Reaper, Ichigo is tasked with taking out dangerous spirits known as hollows who pose a danger to humans. Though hollows are mostly the biggest threat in the series' shorter first arc, elite hollows known as Arrancar become the focus of a later one. ANIME WHERE GIRLS CAN SEE GHOST!

14. kishin douji zenki series.

Kishin Douji Zenki Series 7 11zon

Let us start with a classic that not many people of this generation are quite familiar with. Kishin Doujin Zenki follows a newbie miko, a Japanese shrine maiden, named Chiaki Enno and her struggles in her daily life. Being the descendant of a famous exorcist, our main character is your typical student who didn’t know much about her abilities or lineage, yet. Along with her ability to control a powerful protector demon named Zenki.

As a miko , of course, we know things can get in a crossfire with the yokais (ghosts) so what else could go wrong when our protagonist has awakened a sealed demon? It’s a classic that is quite darker than those in the same genre, but it is enjoyable and light-hearted.

13.Ginban Kaleidoscope

Ginban Kaleidoscope 4 11zon

Forget about one million dollars; our female lead here is literally called “ten billion dollar beauty”! Starting off with a bang, Tazusa Sakurano, is a well-known young figure skater who strives to be the Japanese representative at the Olympics . There is this small problem; she has lost the ability to smile.

So what did God do? He literally sent a ghost to her with the name of Peter Pumps, a former airplane pilot, to help her out. How does that even work?

Considering that this is released in late 2005, the animation may not be on par with other animes in the same genre, but yes, there is a ghost and she cannot just see him- she is possessed by him .

This anime did set a nice balance between sports and romance. We see Peter Pumps’ actual connection to our female protagonist with a twist of comedic banter and heartwarming encouragement.

12. Fuse: Memoirs of a Huntress

Fuse Memoirs of a Huntress 1 11zon

Say it with me now, “Foo-say”. This animated film elegantly puts together feudal fantasy during Japan’s Edo period like never before. Our female lead, Hamaji, is not a damsel in distress in this one . She is out to hunt down Shino, a fuse that is a half-human and half-dog entity that devours human souls. What if she falls in love with the one she is supposed to kill?

Again, it’s “foo-say” and not fyus. We have to nail this pronunciation down.

But going down, perhaps one of the film’s advantages to many was the way the mood shifted from one scene to another, and though its focus wasn’t entirely romance, the film made it as natural as it can be. It’s easy to watch, and the animation style is light and vibrant.

11. Gegege no Kitaro

Gegege no Kitaro 2 11zon

A whopping 50 years, folks. No, you’re not mistaken, the original anime series was released way back in 1967 ! Talk about half a century later.

This remake was released to honor the 50th anniversary of the Gegege no Kitaro, which is well loved because of its moral messages and details in showing how the yokai live through their lives during the modern age.

One of the main protagonists is named Mana Inuyama. At first, she did not really have the ability to see yokai, but eventually, after her encounter with them, she developed a sense of supernatural awareness of the unknown around her. This made her all the more a perfect vessel for malice, but later on, after being saved, she helps Kitaro along with his friends in missions to strive for a world where yokai and humans live in harmony.

Known for the quote, “ Yōkai and humans can be friends after all!” (Episode 47)- One cannot really argue that Mana is a girl who rose from challenges and definitely was able to hold her ground well.

10. Noragami

Norigami 13 11zon

Entering the Top 10, “There is no such thing as a free wish.” This is the walking premise of this anime, as it follows the extraordinary life of a “stray god” named Yato. But it does not just revolve around him. Oh, no.

In the series, we encounter Hiyori Iki, a girl who tried to save Yato. She became half-ayakashi after this, prompting Yato to take responsibility by granting her wish to become fully human one day.  Now, she helps him attain his goal of being a God of Fortune.

This anime is a juicy mix of comedy and the supernatural and with how the story and characters are so very well developed, one can easily relate to their struggles.

9. Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss 6 11zon

What if you suddenly become God?

No, I’m not kidding.

Nanami Momozono certainly had her fair share of unfortunate events in her life, from losing her mother to losing her house from her father’s gambling addiction. After stumbling into a nearly abandoned shrine, she becomes a God overnight. Talk about divine intervention right there and then.

With her familiars, a snake shikigami (servant spirits) named Mizuki and a fox yokai named Tomoe, we follow her adventures through the world of not only yokai but also the gods. You’ll find yourself laughing and grow fond of how Tomoe and Nanami’s relationship would blossom throughout the series as their pasts are slowly uncovered.

Perhaps, even God has her unexpected moments.

8. Ghost Hounds

Ghost Hounds 3 11zon

Prepare yourselves, we’re in this for a dive.

Viewed for its enjoyable and mysterious plot , this anime is for those who fancy the psychological side of the genre.

The famously known author of the Ghost in the Shell Series comes back with a 22-episode anime exploring three male leads’ traumatic life experiences and their abilities to transfer their souls through a parallel world .  A girl named Miyako Komagusu ‘s ability to see ghosts come into play as they help each other sustain the balance between the parallel world and their own.

7. InuYasha

Inuyasha 5 11zon

Who could forget our favorite dog demon, Inuyasha and his gang?

We venture to modern Japan, where Kagome Higurashi stumbles upon an old well and is brought back to the feudal era . At first, it was all good until she was targeted by monsters because a certain Shikon no Tama (Sacred jewel) was in her possession, and along with them is a half-demon, half-human, she accidentally released from his slumber named Inuyasha .

This sought-after Shikon no Tama was once under the protection of a miko named Kikyo who met a tragic end, and now our protagonist inherits this job. Never mind, it shattered and now spread out throughout the whole land, and since she’s the only one who can see it, it’s now her task to assemble them back together . As fate would have it, InuYasha is dragged into this whole mess along with a child fox demon, Shippo,  demon slayer Sango and her pet Kirara, and a perverted monk with a cursed hand, Miroku.

Balancing this with her academics in the Modern Era and her responsibility in the feudal era–how do you think this will all balance out? What if she was more connected to InuYasha in more than one way?

It’s a long and arduous journey but a much-beloved classic nonetheless.

6. Kyoukai no Rinne

Kyoukai no Rinne 9 11zon

What if your classmate one day just came to school and you’re the only one who can see him? Creepy, right? That’s what Sakura Mamiya felt when she was face-to -face with Rinne Rokudou.

From the author of Inuyasha, we now follow the life of Sakura Mamiya and her extraordinary adventure to the unknown world. Is it wrong to fall in love with a ghost and feel sad when he’s asked to leave her? What do you mean, she has to manage her student life while exploring other spirits?

Like any of its genres, comedy takes a principal stage but jokes aside, it’s a slice of life because of how Rinne, even as a ghost, is in constant worry about money of all things!

Mokke 11 11zon

Two sisters and Ghosts . This anime explores the daily struggles of two sisters with their spiritual abilities enough for their parents to move to the countryside. Shizuru sees the spirits, and Mizuki is possessed by them . Both sisters do their best to maintain the normal life they wanted, but much to their dismay, it just isn’t meant to be.

Overall, the anime’s mood is quiet, calm, and unusual. You’ll explore their fears and hobbies. Their wants and their needs. And of course, the fact that they just want to deal with their abilities and how to co-exist with the unknown.

4. Toilet Bound Hanako-kun

Toilet Bound Hanako kun 15 11zon

Coming directly from one of the famous tales in Japan, Toilet bound Hanako-kun is relatively different to its counterpart, where it says a girl would haunt a bathroom stall.

Hanako-kun in this anime turns out to be a guy!

Taking this into consideration, our protagonist, Nene Yashiro finds herself wishing for a boyfriend. To fulfill this, she helps Hanako-kun in solving mysteries of the unknown . She finds this endearing, however, as she adores the occult, but what gives this comedy anime its bittersweet taste is the possibility of Nene wanting to be with Hanako-kun.

What would be Hanako-kun’s resolve by then? No one knows.

3. Kyokou Suiri (In/Spectre)

Kyokou Suiri In Spectre 8 11zon

Using evidence and logic, Kotoko Iwanaga became a mediator between the spirit and human , even going as far as becoming the “ God of Wisdom” at the cost of none other than her right eye.

The anime explores the intellect and wits of the main protagonist and her companion, Kurou Sakuragawa, not to mention that Kotoko shows romantic interest in him being her husband one day. It clearly deviates away from the usual shy female protagonist to new territorial waters in this genre. Talk about an unforeseen fate that began in front of a local hospital. Who would have thought huh?

2. Meiruko-chan

Meiruko chan

A golden rule of the thumb passed down from one generation to another is to “ Never let them know you can see them” . This anime goes about the literal struggle of a girl who does her best to be indifferent toward the hideous and skin-crawling yokais she sees lurking around her.

Miko is just your typical high school student who, just like us, struggles with her social life, academics, and… yokais, big and small, hideous and just downright horrific.  It isn’t necessarily scary, but the anime blends it quite harmoniously with its comedic tones and  immersive environment.

They’re still there though… they’re still looking at Miko. Could they be wanting something from Miko?

1.  Spirited Away

Spirited Away. 14 11zon

And thus we are here at the top one .

From storytelling, excellent animation, and character design, perhaps, it’s no exaggeration that this anime has taken the number one spot on this list.

Chihiro Ogino is a mortal girl who finds herself in the great world of the unknown . Things are different. Food is different. The ‘people’ are not people, and worst of all, her parents were turned into pigs. Did I mention a creature called “No-face” becomes obsessed with her? If it wasn’t for the mysterious boy named Haku who helped her here and there, she wouldn’t be anywhere near survival in this weird world.

She finds herself working in an inn, all the while figuring out a way to get back home. “Don’t look back!” that’s what Haku said, and soon enough, after every hurdle, she finally exits and returns to her own world. Reunited with her parents, she now has newly found confidence that not only is she ready for a change in her life but also to find the friend who helped her escape the spirit world… after all, she managed to survive an entirely different WORLD .

Now that wasn’t so scary, was it? At the end of this article, we find ourselves still wondering if the spirit world is truly what they write and what people envision it to be. Are Yokais real? How about Ayakashi? And the Yurei?

No one really knows, but one comforting thing is, you’re here with us… and you finished the list all well and about! That’s it for this one. Thank you for reading and hopefully, this helped you all out. Stay safe!

25 Best Anime On Ghosts, Paranormal & The Supernatural (Series & Movies)

Spirited Away Ghibli ghost town screenshot

I think we can all agree: anime serves as a great escape from reality.

Sometimes it’s enough to simply see our world from someone else’s eyes, a different place, different people… but sometimes we want to remove ourselves even further from reality.

Ghosts and spooky paranormal stuff should do the trick! And for this ranking I’ll share the best anime that deal with all things supernatural, be it demons, espers, ghosts, or anything in between.

25. A Letter to Momo

A Letter to Momo Anime Screenshot

This movie is bound to be something you’ll really enjoy if you like spirits & supernatural beings.

It’s all about youkai and how much they can befriend(or irritate) our city girl protagonist, Momo.

That’s all you really need to know as far as the plot is concerned. Where this show really shines is the atmosphere it so brilliantly builds in such a short amount of time.

The animation is top-notch and the youkai have been made into actual three-dimensional characters, so it hits both that “suspension of disbelief” and “relatability” right on the head.

24. Fusé: Memoirs of a Huntress

Fusé: Memoirs of a Huntress Anime Screenshot

In order to hunt, you have to see your prey as non-human. Or at least as something below you.

But what happens when you realize that the hunted is just as alive & human as you are?

This is not an ad for veganism, but rather the central premise of Fusé.

In its universe, the Fusé are supernatural creatures. Something between a dog and a man, and are being relentlessly hunted.

Our protagonist, being a huntress herself, meets one by accident and makes it her goal to get him out of harm’s way.

It’s a very touching story and can even teach you a thing or two about how you should treat others.

23. Natsuyuki Rendezvous

Natsuyuki Rendezvous Anime Screenshot

This show has such an odd premise that it’s really hard not to love it.

Our protagonist, Ryousuke Hazuki, goes to a flower shop and falls in love with the owner.

He then tries to slide into those DMs by getting a part-time job there. But oh oh, what’s this?

He can see the spirit of the owner’s deceased husband. And that’s it.

Only he can see him, and as you might imagine this old husband doesn’t want anyone smooth talking his wife.

So they just form this very odd and yet lovable trio that never ceases to put a smile on my face.

22. Another

Another Anime Screenshot

Personally, Another is the first show that pops into my head when I think about ghost stories.

It nails that creepy atmosphere, the dark and stagnant air and the questions that hang around our necks like a noose.

There’s one central mystery in the show and I didn’t find the answer to be super obvious, so kudos for that.

The stakes are very high, however, as with every passing moment tragedy seems to strike. And finding the answer is the only way to stop it.

I’m being rather vague because believe me, you want to go into this show completely spoiler-free.

21. Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist) Anime Screenshot

At times, this show really lulls you into a feeling of security. It offers nice, bright colors, a cheerful cast, the whole nine yards.

But then you remember that Satan is the antagonist.

This is where the smiles drop, the tension rises, and your eyes are glued to the screen.

The pairing of Rin and Yukio make the story both a lot more wholesome, but also a lot more dynamic, with Rin having his latent powers.

It definitely has that shounen vibe , and isn’t as “spooky” as some other entries.

But it makes for a good time nevertheless.

20. Bakemonogatari

Bakemonogatari Anime Screenshot

With the Monogatari series you get all of the supernatural stories you want.

A bee? A curse.

A monkey? A demon.

A vampire? What are you doing, run away from the vampire.

There are so many stories interwoven within the series and its characters, that there always seems to be this sense of intrigue. As there are always questions left unanswered.

The show does a good job at keeping each plot point consistent with the ones already established, sometimes even making them run simultaneously just to screw with you.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the supernatural, urban legends, folklore and the like.

19. Death Note

Death Note Anime Screenshot

I honestly didn’t plan to put Death Note on here. I viewed it as a purely psychological thriller , but then I remembered that two meter tall apple loving gods of death are just a bit supernatural.

So here we are.

Hailed by many as one of the greatest anime to have ever aired, Death Note at its core represents two great minds clashing while an ominous dark presence watches over and gives them powers to slay the other.

The first dozen episodes are especially hyped, as we watch a normal high schooler divulge into a pseudo-god, all while eating his chips.

18. Death Parade

Death Parade Anime Screenshot

What happens after death?

A question that has plagued humanity since it could make rational thought.

Will we be judged by Haruhi and sent to Heaven or Hell? Is it just darkness?

Well, I don’t think anyone envisioned ourselves playing pool or throwing darts to decide their fate.

Death Parade is like a Limbo where the deceased are taken to be judged.

They play different games, usually brutal stuff, that are supposed to show their true colors and determine whether they’ll be reincarnated or sent to the shadow realm.

And never has an existential crisis come with this good of a soundtrack.

17. Devilman: Crybaby

Devilman: Crybaby Anime Screenshot

Get out your devil horns, sacrificial goat, and a bottle of the blood of the innocent, because it’s devil time.

As in the title, and this not so subtle introduction. Might have suggested Devilman: Crybaby is predominantly focused on different demons, their fights, their goals, and their killer nightclub parties.

It’s chaotic as all hell with nudity, blood, flashing colors, dope rapping, angry mobs, more music, motorcycles, and limbs flying everywhere.

And it is definitely the type of show you’d binge in a single day , hold no regrets, and them bother someone else to watch it.

Dororo Anime Screenshot

Hold the Dororo is a story about revenge. Very brutal and very justified revenge.

Hyakkimaru was probably dealt the worst hand at birth out of any character ever, with demons claiming all of his senses, his limbs, his skin, everything.

We see him as a literal shell of a man armed, literally, in pursuit of the very demons that robbed him of a normal life.

The fighting choreography in this show is brilliant. Especially during the latter episodes.

And Hyakkimaru’s wild, almost savage anger will send shivers down your spine when he finally faces those who have wronged him.

15. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Anime Screenshot

Make no mistake, I’m specifically talking about the first season of Jojo’s, so the first two manga arcs. This is the most “supernatural” if that makes sense.

Before there were Stands and it basically became a superhero show, JoJo’s was a lot more… bizarre.

The atmosphere was a lot darker, and the legend known as Dio is set upon the world.

There are vampires now, and Pillar men , and like a super powerful method of breathing.

I never said it made more sense than the later installments.

But it does get you that supernatural fix as god knows, this show is anything but ordinary.

14. Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer Anime Screenshot

Speaking of super powerful ways of breathing, we have Demon Slayer.

Can you guess what the show is about? As far as animation and fight choreography goes, this show absolutely blew me away.

Yet the ragtag group of Tanjirou, Zenitsu and Inosuke bring a lot of comedy to the objectively dark and gloomy storyline.

Each with a special breathing technique and fighting style, they make the show very dynamic. Rarely does the story wonder off or get boring.

And Nezuko is just adorable. Terrifying at times, but mostly adorable. God I love this show.

13. Mob Psycho 100

Mob Psycho 100 Anime Screenshot

Now to take a break from all the demons, we move on to espers.

It’s easy to see why people came into this show expecting One Punch Man.

But the show stands on its own with absolutely no issues.

In fact, since it’s less focused on being funny, the heartwarming moments hit a lot harder. And the sad moments, we don’t talk about them.

It’s no secret that Mob is the strongest esper. But the world is so much larger than just his power. You’ll end up fully immersed and just as hyped for the side characters as you are for the protagonists.

12. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul Anime Screenshot

I find Tokyo Ghoul to be in a similar boat like Jojo’s, with the first season really delivering on the topic of what it was like to be a ghoul, how they lived, organized themselves, the different factions, you know cool supernatural stuff.

It does become more of a superhero flick by the end.

But it is overall pretty enjoyable.

Our protagonist Kaneki has one of the most memorable, edgelord-y transformations ever to hit the media. As well as an iconic soundtrack to boot.

I don’t care much for it after the first season, but you can absolutely have a blast watching this show and learning why people drink so much coffee.

11. Durarara!!

Durarara!! Anime Screenshot

Durarara!! Is a mixture of three things: gang culture , the supernatural, and chat rooms.

Lots and lots of chat rooms.

It takes place in Ikebukuro where everything seems fine and dandy on the surface. But the shadows hide plenty of unusual stuff.

We have a dullahan in the form of a motorcyclist, Hulk’s younger brother in a bartender uniform , somehow an even creepier Stain, and sword possession.

There’s a lot here.

Most of the time, the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. But there are definitely some “oh god why” moments throughout.

10. Mononoke

Mononoke Anime Screenshot

Mononoke takes a very different approach to spirits, as rather than blasting them away with energy beams, the protagonist actually does a ritual.

But in order to do the ritual, he has to know the Form, the Truth, and the Reason for that spirit being there. Getting a bit occult now, huh?

You can already see how this opens up the gate to a ton of backstories and narratives.

And if that abundance of stories isn’t enough to satisfy you, just take a gander at the anime’s artsy style.

It’s definitely not something you’ve seen before.

9. Hell Girl

Hell Girl Anime Screenshot

To understand Hell Girl, all you have to do is mix together Death Parade, Alucard, and 4chan.

The central premise is as follows: there exists a website that you can only access at midnight, through which you communicate with miss Hell girl.

You can then pick out the person that’s making your life miserable and regardless of who they are, she will make sure they do not see the light of day.

The only catch being that you’re now condemned to Hell.

But hey, you knew what you were getting into.

Definitely not as laid back as some of the other shows on this list, but a delight for true fans of the occult and supernatural.

8. Ghost Stories

Ghost Stories Anime Screenshot

Ghost Stories is an absolute classic when it comes to the paranormal.

The mere fact that it’s 20+ years old and still holds up today is proof of that.

The story is simple, think Scooby-Doo but an anime.

Just instead of de-masking George the milkman, they banish ghosts. And instead of a lovable talking dog, we get a possessed, somewhat mean-spirited yet hilarious cat .

The cat is honestly half of the enjoyment for me.

But heed my warning: watch the dubbed version.

The subbed actually takes itself seriously and can become a bore, while the dub is a bit insane, kind of offensive, and just beautiful .

7. Ghost Hound

Ghost Hound Anime Screenshot

There are two main feelings I got from watching Ghost Hound: curiosity and depression.

Okay it wasn’t that bad. But you will see what I mean.

The story is a real mystery: spirits start crossing into our world and it’s on our protagonist trio to figure out why.

The answer is neither obvious nor out of left field, so the conclusion is satisfying as hell.

I will give you a hint, though. It has a lot to do with the mental state of the boys; their previous traumas, fears, thoughts, everything has to be laid bare to crack the code.

So if you’re a wimp like me staring into the eyes of a good psychological anime, strap in.

6. Witch Hunter Robin

Witch Hunter Robin Anime Screenshot

If you’re into the Salem Witch Trials, this show is bound to intrigue you.

Yes, it’s a show all about witches.

But instead of putting a witch in the protagonist’s seat and have her deliver baked goods, we actually see the world from the eyes of Robin, a witch hunter.

It’s also not just another villain of the week show, as Robin doesn’t kill the witches.

No, she tries to understand them through them her own organization.

The story is really riveting and culminates in the most glorious fashion. Definitely give it a try.

5. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Anime Screenshot

Saiki is a bit of an oddball on this list, as it’s purely a comedy .

But hey, the protagonist is an esper. And throughout the show we also get to know a medium and a fortune teller, so thematically it fits into the “supernatural” category quite well.

I’m a huge fan of this show because it takes every anime trope and just makes it so much weirder, and so much funnier.

Never have I seen a character as dumb as Nendou. Or a princess as egotistical as Kokomi.

But they make it all work somehow.

The show is episodic with a very loose overarching plot, and I promise you every episode is a blast.

4. Colorful: The Motion Picture

Colorful: The Motion Picture Anime Screenshot

This movie gets very real. There is no other way to put it.

Without spoiling too much, I will say that the central premise is that of reincarnation. Feeling the pain of others, finding happiness in a grain of sand, and the toxicity one’s surroundings.

I don’t really have any jokes for this one.

The story is mystical in that its portrayal the afterlife, and the task that’s set before us.

But it is also extremely realistic to the point of human suffering, and also compassion.

So if you’re having a rough time, or just want some anime for retrospection, give this one a watch.

3. Natsume’s Book of Friends

Natsume's Book of Friends Anime Screenshot

Natsume’s Book of Friends is the type of show that actually makes you wish you could see spirits.

The central end goal of the series is for Natsumi to basically say farewell to all of the spirits his grandfather signed a contract with.

A man was given power, and his goal is to give it all back, as he doesn’t want the spirits to be indentured to him.

Talk about a stand-up guy.

It’s exactly Natsume’s kind heart that makes the spirits also seem human, and every episode gives you a sense of resolution with tranquility.

Add to this the best traveling companion: a puffy, stuck up cat named Madara, and you’re in for a good time.

2. Spirited Away

Spirited Away Anime Screenshot

Studio Ghibli always manages to wheeze into my lists!

Because how can I leave out a classic like Spirited Away?

In true Miyazaki fashion, the story doesn’t take on this grand narrative of the battle between humans and the spirits.

But rather plops our protagonist into a world unknown, and she explores what it can offer through the eyes of the child.

Plenty of Japanese youkai are represented here, and the world is so meticulously woven that you can almost see it.

On a side note, No Face definitely wants you to return the slab and creeped me out to no end when I first watched the movie.

I love him now though, so it’s okay.

1. Hotarubi no Mori e

Hotarubi no Mori e Anime Screenshot

Fun fact: the AMV for this movie of “you will be king again” is one of the most popular AMVs ever made.

Another fun fact, that song(just like this movie) requires some tissues handy.

This is a beautiful story of a girl, Hotaru, who comes across a spirit, Gin.

Gin saves Hotaru when she gets lost, and before you know it the two become really close.

The catch is that Hotaru can never touch Gin, because if she does, he will disappear forever.

It’s such a simple plot device. One that requires almost no other characters, but it tugs at the heart strings as the two characters are so beautifully written that there seems to be little dividing the supernatural, us, and love.

About Me 2023 Fall

Top 15 Adorable Anime Ghost Girls

Who says all ghost girls in anime are stringy-haired, pale-faced terrors that chase the living with a vengeance? Some are quite cute, nice, and shy, looking out for their friends or even falling in love. In this list, we'll look at 15 anime ghost girls that you wouldn't mind being haunted by!

You'd have to be soulless to call an exorcist on these anime ghost girls!

Meiko Honma Menma from Anohana anime ghost girl

Ghosts are most often associated with fear and terror, primarily since the tales of yurei (ghosts in Japanese) spread like wildfire in the past. Anime, being one of the major forms of modern media, is also responsible for telling tales of the dreaded, vengeful specters that haunt and prey on the living until they are laid to rest. But what about cute anime ghost girls?

Yes, this list will showcase fifteen cute anime ghost girls that manage to retain their lovable nature despite having met an untimely end, and who are more likely to give you a heart attack from their saccharine smiles than out of fright. Note that ghost in the context of this list can also include astral projections, spiritual entities, and disembodied souls—as long as they have spent a significant amount of time in that state and can pass as a ghost, they fit the requirements. As per usual, there will also be only one representative per anime and the order of the list is the personal opinion of the writer.

Unfortunately, Nanana was later stabbed in the back and killed in her own apartment room—leaving her ghost bound to it. Even after death, Nanana still holds her head high, enjoying pudding, playing games, and helping anyone that comes to her with one of her collection—magical artifacts that she gathered from all over the world that are now scattered over the island.

But what makes Nanana such a cute anime ghost is that, despite her knowledge, skills, and personality, you can tell she still feels lonely. The world around her continues to move while she remains trapped in her room, bound by a tragic death that remains unsolved to this day. Yet she puts on her best face for her roommate, Juugo , who sees through it all and wants to solve the mystery so that she can move on.

Best Yokai Anime: 16 Supernatural Anime With Ghosts & Spirits

Yokai or Youkai (妖怪) is a whole class of Japanese unworldly creatures: spirits, demons, gods, shapeshifters, and other supernatural creatures found in Japanese folklore tradition. Manga and anime with Yokai themes are all about spiritual entities and humans who interact with them.

Some of these otherworldly beings are evil, some are mischievous but harmless, and all of them have a long history in Japanese folktales. Yokai influenced generations of artists and authors who reimagined them for modern audiences, so it’s no surprise that things that go bump in the night found their way into manga, anime, and other pop culture narratives.

So if you’re a Japanese culture aficionado, a fan of the supernatural, and intrigued by the unknown, then my list of 16 best yokai anime recommendations is for you. I’ve included all the info you’ll need to choose what to watch next: MyAnimeList ratings, plot summaries, mini-reviews, and streaming offers.

I’ve also made sure to include different genres that touch upon the Yokai mythology, so you’ll find horror, action, adventure, drama, romance, comedy, and slice-of-life anime. Enjoy and let these tales capture your imagination.

BEST YOKAI ANIME

1. mononoke.

Best yokai anime: Mononoke

Toei Anmation Inc.

MyAnimeList: 8,4 Seasons: 1 | Episodes: 12 Watch on: Netflix , Crunchyroll

What’s it about: A mysterious, unnamed “Medicine Seller” travels across feudal Japan, hunting down the unnatural, Ayakashi spirits called “Mononoke,” which bind themselves to negative human emotions. Before he can draw his “sword of exorcism,” he must first recognize the spirit’s form (Katachi), truth (Makoto), and reason (Kotowari).

What makes it good: Told through five standalone story arcs and rooted in Japanese folklore, Mononoke is your different breed of horror anime you don’t want to miss. The brilliantly written stories are deep, sometimes bizarre, and the psychedelic imagery and ambient sound only reinforce the tense atmosphere and help the stories unfold.

2. Mushi-shi

Best yokai supernatural anime: Mushishi

MyAnimeList: 8,7 Seasons: 1 | Episodes: 26 Watch on: Crunchyroll ,  Hulu ,  Prime Video

What’s it about: Ginko is a healer with the ability to interact with the paranormal entities, the “Mushi”. The Mushi Mater is wandering from town to town, chasing rumors of Mushi-related occurrences to investigate the phenomenon, and ends up helping people whose lives have been unpleasantly affected by Mushi in the process.

What makes it good: Mushishi’s episodes are self-contained, each one a powerful tale inspired by East Asian folklore. This mystery anime combines yokai elements with realism, and its primary concern is humanity’s relationship to nature. It’s very relaxing to watch; the peaceful atmosphere, soothing sounds, and visuals make it one of the best iyashikei anime ever.

3. Noragami

Best ghost anime: Noragami

MyAnimeList: 8 Seasons: 2 | Episodes: 25 Watch on: Funimation , Hulu , Prime Video

She takes the hit for him, leaving her soul detached from her body and the unfortunate ability to see gods and spirits. To fix her predicament, Hiyori teams up with Yato and his spiritual weapon Yukine.

What makes it good: Noragami sure has a lot going for it. Supernatural elements rooted in Japanese Shinto tradition and a dark story give it a creepy vibe; it’s both action-packed and heartfelt, plus it has a nice comedy and romance touch. So, it’s no wonder this yokai anime about a minor deity determined to make it big is an entertaining watch from minute one.

4. Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (Yu Yu Hakusho)

What makes it good: Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the best 90s anime , a 112-episode long battle shonen that still holds up today. Despite its length, the show never drags and it’s a blast to watch – it’ll hook you right from the start. It’s a classic for a reason: it comes with a lot of heart, humor, superpowered action, and incredible characters. Even the English dub is great!

What makes it good: MP100 somehow manages to perfectly balance comedy, drama, slice-of-life, action, and supernatural genres. Its strong and stylish animation, colorful and complex characters, kickass battle sequences, zany humor, and emotional impact make it a fun ride from start to finish. It’s no wonder it became an instant fan favorite.

6. xxxHolic

xxxHolic yokai anime

MyAnimeList: 8 Seasons: 2 | Episodes: 37 Watch on: Funimation , Prime Video

She promises to rid him of the bothersome spirits, but he has to work in her store in exchange.

What makes it good: xxxHolic is a spooky yokai anime, but there’s plenty of humor to keep the lights on. It’s not action-packed or fast-paced; instead, it’s dialogue-heavy and focuses on morality stories. The animation is a little off-kilter, but it works in the show’s favor. So, if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, this witch-related fantasy anime  is for you.

7. Natsume’s Book of Friends (Natsume Yuujinchou)

What makes it good: This is a supernatural slice-of-life anime focused on Natsume’s not-so-ordinary day-to-day life; the show is rich in Japanese lore, because Natsume encounters a different yokai with a different background story every episode. The heartfelt show boasts fantastic animation and a beautiful soundtrack, so make sure to add it to your watchlist!

What makes it good: Hozuki’s Coolheadedness is a dark comedy anime that portrays Hell as an exaggerated version of a Japanese company. The visuals incorporate classic Japanese art, and the story and the jokes contain references that require knowledge of Japanese culture. So, if you’re an experienced anime watcher, give this original and hilarious anime a go!

Since then, the two meet every summer holiday, and feelings develop despite Hotaru growing up and changing, while Gin always remains the same.

What makes it good: This anime film is only 45 minutes long, but it’s packed with emotional moments. Hotarubi no Mori e has a magical, almost dreamlike feel thanks to the rich and vibrant animation that brings the forest inhabited by yokai to life. Still, keep your tissues close because this sad anime fairy tale of pure but impossible love will hit you like a ton of bricks.

10. Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita)

Nanami’s new home, however, turns out to be a shrine! She unknowingly took the job of a land god and found herself in a contract with a new guardian, a handsome fox spirit named Tomoe.

What makes it good: Kamisama Kiss is a cute love story set against the backdrop of the spiritual world of yokai, gods, and shrines. But it’s not all about being lovey-dovey; it’s also a story of finding a place to call home – your place in the world.  Add a bright animation, lighthearted tone, and a little bit of humor to the mix, and you get a perfect shoujo / romance anime watch.

11. InuYasha

Inuyasha best yokai anime

What makes it good: The 167-episode isekai anime from the early 2000s features a magical quest, colorful characters, Japanese myths, creative ghost stories, and many intense yokai battles, but it’s never too scary. It perfectly blends fantasy adventure with romance and some much-needed comic relief, so there’s a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.

12. Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata)

When her schoolmate Akihito tries to save her from what he thinks is a suicide attempt, she stabs him and reveals him to be an immortal “half-youmu.” After learning her tragic story, Akihito decides to help her regain her lost confidence to kill youmu.

What makes it good: This is a beautifully animated supernatural romance story about two high school outcasts, spiced with drama, action, moe cuteness, and offbeat humor. Yokai elements are strong; the mysterious spirit world intertwined with the human world is where the Beyond the Boundary truly shines, so you’re in for a real supernatural anime treat!

13. The Eccentric Family (Uchouten Kazoku)

best yokai anime - The Eccentric Family

MyAnimeList: 7,9 Seasons: 2 | Episodes: 25 Watch on: Crunchyroll , Prime Video

What makes it good: The Eccentric Family  is a whimsical and fun slice of life anime with family bonds at its center despite the dark undertones. It seamlessly blends Japanese mythology with the characters’ everyday life, and the beautiful animation makes the mystical Kyoto live and breathe. So if you’re looking for a SOL yokai anime to watch, this is a perfect choice!

14. Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan (Nurarihyon no Mago)

Many factions aim to stop him as he struggles to find the balance between the yokai and the human world.

What makes it good: The animation is spot-on in this shonen anime, especially the creative yokai designs. There’s a whole lot of yokai lore, sword/katana fights, and political intrigue to keep things interesting. The subtle comedy will make you laugh throughout the show’s two seasons, and anime fans who enjoy a good love story will appreciate the romance part.

15. The Morose Mononokean (Fukigen na Mononokean)

The Morose Mononokean best youkai anime

Crunchyroll

The Monokean owner helps him, but Hanae can’t afford to pay, so he starts working for Abeno, guiding a variety of yokai back to the Underworld.

What makes it good: The Morose Mononokean combines the whimsical energy of Alice In Wonderland with a school setting slice-of-life comedy. The anime has an episodic structure, but at the heart of this underappreciated gem is an uplifting story about humans helping yokai. Not only is it a light-hearted and relaxing watch, but it also paints yokai in a positive light.

16. GeGeGe no Kitaro

GeGeGe no Kitaro paranormal anime

MyAnimeList: 7,2 Seasons: 1 | Episodes: 97 Watch on: Crunchyroll

He has help from Mana, a human girl who summoned him, the remains of his father (a talking eyeball), and other yokai who are willing to help humans, such as catgirl Neko.

What makes it good: GeGeGe no Kitaro (2018) is the sixth installment of the legendary 1960s anime that introduced yokai to the medium. The mostly episodic anime has a solid mythical flavor, but it doesn’t shy away from current social issues. It has it all – a good dose of spooks, plenty of laughs, and intense action to keep you glued to the screen.

5 Must-See Ghost Anime for Fans of the Paranormal

Are you interested in the supernatural or the netherworld? Do you get the sense that something unknown walks among us? If so, then you might find the ghost subgenre of anime entertaining. From traditional hauntings to supernatural stories about friendship, the subgenre has something for everyone. Here are the five best ghost anime for fans of the paranormal.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia

Ghosts come in different shapes and sizes, and the spirit in Dusk Maiden of Amnesia appears in the form of a beautiful school girl. Seikyou Academy is unlike any other school. Instead of focusing on cultural festivals and school trips, the student body tells tales about the occult.

According to a rumor, there’s a ghost on campus. The apparition, known as Yuuko , apparently died in the basement of the old school building. But what the students don’t know is that the rumors are true. It’s a good thing Yuuko is a friendly ghost.

The series follows  Teiichi Niiya , a middle school student discovers Yuuko while roaming around the campus’ old building. Initially frightened by Yuuko, Teichi overcomes his fear and befriends the beautiful girl. But he soon learns that Yuuko possesses no memories of her life or death. Determined to help his new friend, Teiichi founds the Paranormal Investigation Club  to investigate Yuuko’s life and the cause of her death. But Yuuko’s death isn’t the only mystery that needs solving.

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

A longtime favorite of horror and gore anime fans, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls  is actually about a sadistic, vengeful ghost of a little girl. Students like to tell spooky tales, and the scariest of all are the ones based on true stories. A few years ago, Heavenly Host Elementary School was shut down after a string of serial kidnappings and murders rocked the community. Years later, they foolishly build a new school in its place.

Fast forward to the present, where nine high schoolers conduct a ritual to remain friends forever. The ritual seems harmless at first. That is until they are transported to another dimension — the place where those heinous murders took place all those years ago.

One by one the school kids suffer gruesome deaths, like getting their eyes poked out or being gutted like a fish, at the hands of the dead girl and her minions. The ones remaining must find a way to escape before they fall victim to these vengeful ghosts.

Le Portrait de Petite Cossette

Only three-episodes long, Le Portrait de Petite Cossette offers a different take on the supernatural. The short series follows  Eiri Kurahashi , an art student who works at his uncle’s antique shop. One day, while at the shop, he sees the image of a beautiful girl in one of the antique glasses.

Upon touching it, he finds himself transported to the world where this beautiful young woman,  Cossette d’Auvergne , resides. She reveals to Kurahashi that her betrothed, Marcello Orlando , killed her due to his obsession with Cossette’s beauty. To free her spirit, Kurahashi must suffer the consequences for Marcello’s sinful act.

Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is, in every sense of the word, a refined ghost story about love and obsession. In only three episodes, the series immerses viewers in Cossette’s tragic world, which is an artistic portrayal of nightmarish scenes. So, if you’re looking for something visually unique featuring ghosts, then give this short anime series a try.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Not every ghost anime has to be about brutal murders or spooky hauntings. Some series can produce beautiful and heart-wrenching feelings, as is the case with Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day .

Instead of spending the summer holidays with friends or traveling, Jinta Yadomi stays home and plays video games. One day, his childhood friend, Menma , suddenly appears and pesters him to grant a forgotten wish. He ignores her — which annoys Menma even more. But Jinta doesn’t care. After all, Menma died years ago.

Initially attributing his sighting to the extreme heat, Jinta soon realizes that he’s actually seeing his childhood friend. When Menma dies, Jinta and the rest of the gang can’t handle the loss and grow apart. Now they must come together to lay Menma’s spirit to rest. But can they endure the pain and guilt that comes with such a heavy task?

It seems that mystery and the paranormal go hand in hand, as each one drives those affected to discover the truth behind them. The supernatural anime  Ghost Hunt   evokes these same emotions.

When high school student  Mai Taniyama  meets 17-year-old Kazuya Shibuya , a detective from Shibuya Psychic Research investigating paranormal activities at Mai’s school, all hell breaks loose.

Mai accidentally knocks over some of Kazuya’s equipment and is saved by his assistant, Lin . Unfortunately, Lin gets injured in the process and can no longer assist Kazuya. Now without help, the young detective demands Mai become his new assistant. Throughout the series, Mai and Kazuya, along with other supernatural investigators, solve various ghost-related mysteries.

Ghost Hunt has several plots, ranging from lighthearted scenes to creepy hauntings to several jump-scares. But, the nightmare factor comes into play in one particular arc, where the villain copycats the heinous crimes of Vlad the Impaler and Elizabeth Báthory . You might want to leave the lights on for that one.
