Designer Igor Lobanov Is Creating the Yachts of Our Future

Moscow-born designer Igor Lobanov first burst on the superyacht scene as the owner’s representative for the groundbreaking motor yacht A , which was designed by Philippe Starck, with naval architecture by Martin Francis, and built and delivered by Blohm + Voss in 2008. From concept to completion, the process took four years.

Lobanov went on to establish Lobanov Design in 2007, a dynamic studio with roots in everything from transportation design to architecture. His multi-award-winning Jubilee , which  launched in 2017 from the Oceanco shipyard, remains the largest superyacht to come out of the Netherlands, a country known for its large-yacht craftsmanship.

What was the owner’s original brief for Jubilee ?

I never met the owner, and he never made a comment on the exterior. The client liked our first new-build yacht, the [281-foot] Oceanco Y078, but thought it was too small. I supplied more concepts, the client picked one, and that is Jubilee . The proportions of all the decks remain unchanged since those original renderings.

Was that your simplest design job ever?

I don’t think so, because when I first designed the concept in 2010, no one believed in it. They couldn’t make sense of the layered decks. The only person who understood it was the client. I love the idea that from afar it looks like a much bigger yacht, but the nearer you get you realize its actual size. That’s what we wanted to achieve—the feeling and scale of a [525-foot] yacht in a modest one [361 feet].

You describe Lobanov Design as a studio for the future—what do you mean?

It means that what we designed 10 years ago will still look futuristic in a decade. And I’m not joking. Look at concepts like Star or Tuhura . I designed Tuhura in 2012, but I’m sure that in a couple of years people will look at it as something that is realistic, something that can be built.

What projects are you currently working on?

We’re collaborating with CRN shipyard on a [246-foot] project , Begallta . Engineering has already started, but it doesn’t look like anything we’ve done before, and that was really important to us. We’re also working with other shipyards on smaller boats, and with a couple of private clients on medium-sized yachts .

Igor Lobanov

Established in 2007, Lobanov Design is a studio for the future. With roots in everything from transport design and fine art to interiors and architecture, this young studio's diverse background gives it a fresh and dynamic approach to yacht design.

Having grown up in landlocked Moscow, founder Igor Lobanov's career began in pursuit of his passion for the automotive and aviation worlds. Degrees in maths, car design and a masters in transport design led him to a role within the exterior design department of an iconic automobile manufacturer, before a chance meeting with a superyacht owner in 2003 changed his trajectory entirely. The owner brought Lobanov on as his representative for a groundbreaking new 119m project in build at Blohm + Voss; a project that was to become the mighty motoryacht A.

This three year career diversion ignited a new nautical passion for Lobanov but also reaffirmed his love of design. Knowing that he had his own story to tell, he enlisted the help of his wife, artist Yulia, and founded Lobanov Design. Specialising in exterior design, the new studio hit the ground running at its first Monaco Yacht Show in 2007, exhibiting two visionary motoryacht concepts with two renowned shipyards.

Over the past decade, Lobanov Design has built itself around a world-class team of skilled professionals across offices in Moscow and Barcelona. Each team member brings with them a unique perspective on design, unexpected ideas and matchless expertise from a variety of fields: car design, interior design, motorbike design, architecture, aviation engineering and 3D modelling. This varied, comprehensive experience has helped Lobanov Design innovate, evolve and create, earning the studio respect and acclaim for its bold approach to luxury yacht design. Its first launch was the spectacular and extremely private 85.6m Y708 in 2013 with Oceanco and, most recently, the 110m Jubilee in 2017, the largest yacht to have been built in the Netherlands to date. Both yachts are multiple award-winning and pinnacles of design, human engineering and craftsmanship.

Driven by a desire to see more beauty in the world, Lobanov's designs are sculptural and modern, each one an ode to proportion and integrity. Through hand sketching, 3D modelling, visualisation, GA development and detail development, the studio helps clients translate their dreams into the ultimate custom superyachts. Each project is as unique as its owner, embodying its own design language and style but always consistent in quality and ingenuity.

‘My favorite moment in this new life as yacht design was the first moment I stepped onto welded metal structure of a yacht. The moment that yacht turned into reality, became more than the sketch we had known for the previous year or two. That moment is, without any doubt, magical. I felt high, excited, thrilled. No money could buy that feeling and no words could describe it’, says Lobanov.

Realizing he had a story to tell, Lobanov enlisted the help of his wife, artist Yulia, and founded Lobanov Design. Futuristic design inspiration and fairly radical concepts were met with mixed emotions by owners and industry professionals. ‘Designers kept telling us our work was too artsy. But that’s what we wanted to do. I agree with them; our approach is artistic.

Owners, too, were very frank with us, expressed criticism easily. I like that; I like when people get passionate. Sometimes it is good to hear bad things about your work, because that way at least you know people aren’t indifferent to your work. They have noticed it. It’s much worse to get no critique at all. That probably means what you have created is mundane’, says Lobanov. Orienting on exterior design, the studio hit the ground running at its first Monaco Yacht Show in 2007, presenting two visionary motoryacht concepts for two renowned shipyards.

Over the past decade, Lobanov Design has gathered at its core a world-class team of skilled professionals, working in offices in Moscow and Barcelona.

Each team member brings in their unique perspective on design, unexpected ideas and matchless expertise from a variety of fields: car design, interior design, motorbike design, architecture, aviation engineering and 3D modeling. This diverse and inclusive base has helped Lobanov Design innovate, evolve and create, earning the studio respect and acclaim for its bold approach to luxury yacht design.

Their first launch for Oceanco was the spectacular 85,6 m Y708 in 2013 best known for her intimate private spaces. That yacht ushered the way for the 110 m Jubilee launched in 2017, and the latest project is the 115-meter Tuhura. Lobanov recently delighted with Begallta, 75 m yacht with a charismatic, futuristic spirit, developed with the CRN Technical Office. The silhouette of the luxury yacht attracts the eye with its modern design, the perfectly executed tapered bow, which slices through the water like a knife.

The most recognizible design element of Begallta is the line that slants along the hull and superstructure like a ribbon, seamlessly uniting her decks and giving the exterior an unprecedented sense of fluidity. The futuristic design culminates a stern, where the sliced corners of the aft underline the yacht’s highly distinctive style.

‘At the moment we have got one 75-meter custom under construction and several new projects already built in their respective yards. In addition to that, we are working on several projects in various stages of development’, says Igor Lobanov. The studio uses everything at their disposal – sketching by hand, 3D modeling, visualization, GA development and detail development – to help clients translate their dreams into ultimate custom superyachts.

Each project is as unique as the client, has its own design language and style, but with consistent quality and ingenuity overall. ‘ Every project is inspired by something new. Sometimes it’s the client who gives us inspiration and ideas, sometimes it’s a dream I had years ago, which was the case with project Tuhura. We mostly find inspiration in architecture and car design, but not exclusively,’ says Lobanov, who recently visited Croatia for the second time. In 2017 the designer visited Split, and now he traveled to Dubrovnik. Lobanov says he has plans to visit Zagreb on his third visit to the country, and to do some island hopping – on a yacht, of course.

Lobanov Design has displayed their ground breaking SHY Oceanco exterior yacht design publicly for the first time. SHY is an inventive 110 metre yacht design which is nearly finished being built at Oceanco and is to be launched later this year. It is a significant design because it is clean and modern and novel, and yes the superyacht is very large in size. But it is the organically inspired superstructure which jumps out the most. Simply put it represents an innovative and charismatic departure from the mainstream shape and style of the motor yacht superstructure.

There is a pioneering form on display here. It replaces straight lines with flowing ribbons, bringing a translucent, ethereal and otherworldly quality more akin to a futuristic space craft than an earthbound superyacht. The twisting and flowing of the ribbon forms that adorn the yacht are an inspiration. But they weren’t intended just to provide striking looks because they have a practical function too in that they enable a far greater degree of privacy for the yacht owner and guests, hence the name ‘SHY’. Igor Lobanov relied on his knowledge of science to give inspiration but he also found inspiration in natural forms to find a rhythm and poise in the structures. Once again we see design brilliance when science and nature work together, when pragmatism enables splendour, form and function.

When referring to the yacht’s superstructure in particular Lobanov comments: “That’s how we see the way to express a feeling of privacy from outside which doesn’t compromise panoramic views from inside / lightweight and translucent / Yacht SHY will keep your secrets.”

The New 110-metre superyacht concept by the Italian design studio Lobanov Design is perspicacious in nature and sure to catalyse many more yacht designs referencing a similar theme. Radical in appearance and novel in approach Lobanov Design is not new to breaking the mould with previous unconventional designs such as Phoenicia and Star – see below. Oceanco Yacht project SHY follows the 85-metre Oceanco superyacht St. and Princess Olga into production. SHY is also known as Oceanco yacht hull Y714 and it is presently at the final stages of completion. Once launched the yacht is sure to shoot Lobanov Design to even further heights being by far the largest yacht ever built in The Netherlands, both in length and size.

An innovative light displacement fast cruising yacht designed by Carl Schumacher, the Lightwave 48 is an attractive centre cockpit coachroof yacht. Her light displacement means that she needs only a modest rig to deliver superb performance, especially offwind. The Lightwave 48  Scarlet Oyster  is perhaps the most successful Oyster racer ever built.
